finally solved a problem thats been bugging me for actual months holy shit
#context. i downloaded a new drum vst to use in fl studio cause the one i normally use doesnt work on this laptop for some reason???#that ones besides the point. whenever i tried to export with aforementioned new drum vst it straight up crashed fl studio#apparently this is a known issue for MULTIPLE daws on recent OSes#and the solution is to run it bridged or whatever the equivalent is

I miss making remasters using mostly soundfonts. Some of the remasters I'm most proud of were made using exclusively soundfonts.
#i spent like forty minutes applying soundfonts to my arrangement for 'barren valley'#for fun#some of these I plan to use in the final version. but most if them not#and it sounds...good#definitely not as pretty#but more...present#sometimes the vsts I use can come of as underwhelming#ESPECIALLY the strings#don't have the same punch#same for drums#so even though they're better. they're not always the BEST#noctgem music

Mustache Girl takes on a hybrid Asgore and Asriel role. Already feeling trapped and conflicted, her emotions are finally pushed over the edge when an incredibly large group of people -- though it feels more like the entire world with how suffocating the crowd is -- barge into her throne room and hurl insults her way, telling her to "get lost!" among other things …and (almost) all in the name of Bow Kid, mirroring what happened years ago to a disturbing degree. Finally overwhelmed by all her painful thoughts and emotions bubbling back to the surface, she snaps and violently shatters a Time Piece in a fit of rage. And thus history is made to repeat itself once more. But this time, something's different.

But ye, this is actually happening! Aside from using similar instruments (and a somewhat loose idea for the very beginning of my track,) this is very deliberately unfaithful to the typical H&D structure. Knew right away that I wanted to use Mustache Girl EX as the base for this track, and that sticking too rigidly to the structure of any other H&D would do a disservice to the feel I wanted to go for: that same kick-you-in-the-dick level of power from Mu EX, but with a LOT more of a melancholy vibe underlying all that fury. Plus, bit of a fun fact: adjustments have been made since obviously, but the first "complete" mixing draft of this track was finished on New Year's Eve 2023! (This kind of constant revising is why the His Theme track is still not done on my part btw lmaooooo.)
Also… I'll fully admit something here. For the first time on a track I've done, the drumbeat's backbone is comprised of loops I got when I bought Mixcraft 10 (especially with some of the things they were offering during the first week of its launch,) and the only supplemental VST I used was Abbey Road 80's Drummer for the left panned hi-hats. I know that EDM-type stuff similar to the actual Mu EX track is completely out of my wheelhouse, and I didn't want to royally screw up the drum pattern with this different metal-ish take on it, seeing as those are something I have a TON of trouble with. All things considered, drumline came out ok!
And ye on the whole, I'm incredibly happy with this track, and it's easily the most ambitious arrangement I've done to date (and the most difficult too in some aspects.) Hope you all enjoy! :)

Do you have any recommendations for music making software?
Reaper is good, and while I'll never say to buy FL Studio, if you happened to come into possession of it, the sheer quantity of included vsts is great for getting started
if numbers work better for you than pictures of pianos or you want to play two hundred drums at once, check out Renoise

First new track of the new year! This is just a quick exercise testing out some new presets I got for my FMDrive VST (and modifying some Roland TR-626 drums). Also trying out a new mixing/mastering method. This isn't meant to be 100% accurate to real SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive hardware. But rather something inspired by it. Pretty pleased with how well this came out!

Hannah Jocelyn: Chris Martin is one of the great pop melody writers to ever do it, and “Viva La Vida” and “Warning Sign” aside, one of the most insipid lyricists. So maybe it makes sense the man doesn’t try, but this sounds both obscenely expensive and unfinished. There’s underwriting your pre-choruses, then there’s “I know, lalalalalalalalalala.” The nadir is “La La lo de lo”, which are not syllables that have been or should be said consecutively. The joy of Coldplay is their attention to detail that gives the vague sentiments actual weight. What saves this from being a wash (and why it earns a positive score) is how this sounds like a real band; “Humankind”, which this resembles, sounded entirely made with VSTs, and Jonny Buckland’s guitars (the bands’ secret weapon) are integrated into the song rather than trotted out at the last second. With Brian Eno on board for the proper album, I’m looking forward to the more complex "Arabesque"/"Coloratura" companion piece.

Nortey Dowuona: Will Champion made the right choice. And he made the right choices here. The drums that slowly emerge chrysalis like at the end are sharp, powerful and strong, striking hard at the snares so well the lalas from Chris Martin feel just as otherworldly as they're meant to be, with the kick/snare pattern that has loped throughout the song small thin and inexpressive, allowing the keyboard band led by Martin (and including Max Martin, producer of Ready For It, Daniel Green and Rik Simpson, producers of Daddy, and Oscar Holter, producer of Scared To Live) to layer each track of keyboard upon each other until they ebb and allow the band to emerge, trusting Martin's frail tuneful and winsome voice to lalala his way into your heart.

Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: "I was born to kill" is the funniest thing that Chris Martin has even sung. Everything else is unremarkable — half the lyrics appear to be various "La"s; the melody is a weakly-sketched remembrance of earlier Coldplay songs; Max Martin has done better. It feels unfair to all of us to review this as a song. At this point, Coldplay has eclipsed all critical and worldly concerns. This music is for forces beyond us, for massive festival clap-alongs and the background of inspirational short-form video content. Who cares how the hook goes?

Alfred Soto: The impregnable normality of the track's lightly electronic glaze and arena rock aspirations doesn't produce the requisite affection: he may feel like he's falling in love, but Chris Martin sure doesn't sound like it. My guy could have taken his clothes off and danced to the Rite of Spring.

You're good, this is the best way to respond~ They aren't up anywhere yet, I'm in the very early stages of figuring out a new spot to host stuff (not closing the blog itself, just Tumblr has become a bit of a hassle to use anymore for archival purposes and I want something that feels more "permanent" and easier to navigate...). Anyway.
In the 2006 FRUITS CLiPPER/CLM feature: Native Instruments Battery 2, Native Instruments FM7, Arturia ARP 2600V (damn the thing this was replicating was gorgeous), Arturia Minimoog V, DISCODSP Discovery 2, Novation V-Station, Spectrasonics Trilogy.
[They ignored the lad for the entirety of 2007, which is insane, but.]
MORE! MORE! MORE! feature from '08: I wound up having to skim some of this and didn't find much... He says he was still using "the usual Native Instruments and Arturia," something made by Waves (S&R just notates it as "plugins by Waves" as they were listing what was shown in studio photos), and he mentions "only using the hi-hat from XLN Audio Addictive Drums." (As a side note when asked about what pitch correction software he used, he said he changed it depending on what he felt like, between Melodyne, Auto-Tune, Yamaha Pitch-Fix and "free software.")
[His 2009 feature was for FLASH BEST so nothing new, though there is a paragraph of him talking about Hatsune Miku. This is what ya'll are missing out on by not voting for it in the poll lol...]
PLAYER feature from '10: Wow the white text on a black background for this is killing my eyes!! Steinberg HALion Symphonic Orchestra & still says Native and Arturia are his ride-or-dies, Spectrasonics Trilogy and Trilian and that's it.
