‘The Fall Guy’ Shortchanges Story for Stunts in a Story About Stunts
‘The Fall Guy’ Shortchanges Story for Stunts in a Story About Stunts; 3/10
By: Will Hume In the sprawling landscape of contemporary cinema, where blockbusters vie for attention and hearts, The Fall Guy arrives with the swagger of a daredevil aiming for stardom. Two years ago, Tom Cruise set the sky ablaze with Top Gun: Maverick, a cinematic declaration that proclaimed, “This movie is worth it because you’re worth it.” But now, in the shadow of that towering success,…

Happy (Santa) Sci-Fi Saturday! Tell me all the genre and holiday works you've been enjoying this week! I watched The Marvels twice more this week, bringing my total viewings up to 6 (and counting!). I also started the Christmas season with Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas and Christmas Vacation.

"I'm just a boy in a neon suit, standing in front of a girl, reminding her that Notting Hill is her favorite movie."
GANG. I went to see The Fall Guy and it was SO. FREAKIN’. GOOD. Like, sooooo good.
I have to admit, I’ve been a bit disillusioned with movies for the past few years. The industry has changed and like, really, do we need so many fucking movies about APES? Apes? For real? I do not understand why they’re making like 90% of the shit they’re making and I used to love to go and see absolutely everything and I haven’t felt that way in a while.
Y’all,in the summer of 2008, there was Ironman, Dark Knight, and Pineapple Express. That was the height for me. That was the last time I felt really tuned into what was going on at the movies.
The Fall Guy reminds me a lot of that summer. It would have fit perfectly. I would have seen it at least three times, we would have wandered into showings a few minutes late because there was nothing else going on that day and we wanted to get out of the heat and just have a good time. It feels nostalgic, and I love that.
Wherein, Ryan Gosling plays Colt, a stunt guy for a popular movie star, in love with Emily Blunt’s camera operator turned director Jody, who's trying to make her first movie, after Colt suffered a terrible injury on the job and basically disappeared.
I’m gonna be Stefan for a second - this movie has EVERYTHING! Car chases, adorable couple moments, a dog that bites people in the junk, karaoke, a dopeeee neon suit, explosions, a dead body, movie quotes, friendship, and, obviously, a shit ton of incredible stunts.
ALSO! Hannah Waddingham. Shout out to that gorgeous amazon woman for being charming as hell and also a ridiculous villain. Girl, you are on fire and I want to see you in literally everything.
But my favorite part? Jody explaining the plot of the movie she’s making while forcing Colt to perform a stunt that sets him on fire, over and over, in front of the entire crew. Obviously, the movie plot has parallels to their brief affair, and she’s calling him out on abandoning her so very publicly, hiding her hurt behind the details of her movie couple, Aliena and Space Cowboy (which, LOL). And he takes it on the chin, and he tries to answer her as honestly as possible in between takes, burning and thrown against a wall. It’s funny and a little bit cathartic and a little bit sad.
Once she finally decides he’s down with the stunt, he climbs into a truck to leave and the radio starts blaring Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well”. He starts singing along and remembering their time together and ya boy starts to cry but is then interrupted by Jody asking “are you crying to Taylor Swift?” and the whole thing was absolute perfection. They had me in the palm of their hands, after that.
And that’s like, pretty close to the start. The rest of it is madcap and fun and Ryan Gosling really is a fucking powerhouse. He’s Noah from The Notebook, he’s Ken, he’s a fucking mouseketeer and he’s always so, so, so, so good. The man is a national treasure. I will follow wherever he goes because it’s always wonderfully entertaining.
It’s really just two hours of the perfect movie going experience. And the confusing thing is, it seems like the studio didn’t realize what they had? I remember the first time I saw a preview for it, it was supposed to come out in March which is when you dump out tepid movies no one’s really dying for. But then they moved the release to May which made more sense, summer movie season, but man they are not touting this movie the way they should.
It’s universally appealing! The chemistry between Colt and Jody! The full on absolutely crazy action sequences! The banter!
It’s an incredible summer movie. And it put me in a great mood. I need more of that in my life, and I bet y’all do too. Maybe I’ll go again, and pretend I’m a youngin’ just looking for something to do for the afternoon, ignoring my terrible adult obligations. That’s what movies are for, and I’m glad The Fall Guy helped me remember that.
Ryan Gosling, you wonder.

Eurovision Semifinal 2 viewing notes:
Haha, the pre-show screen is displaying “GOOD TO GO!” I am both amused and annoyed that the new guy’s catchphrase might be growing on me.
Denmark, Reiley, “Breaking My Heart” – For a song where so much of it is in his upper register, his voice is not particularly strong there.
Oh look it’s Daði Freyr in the green room.
Armenia, Brunette, “Future Lover” – Very cool staging, really good use of lights and projections. Sounded good as well.
Romania, Theodor Andrei, “D.G.T (Off and On)” – Theodor Andrei looks like quite the theater kid. Glad they went in a different direction than the national final performance though I am not sure if it presents the song to its best advantage.
Estonia, Alika, “Bridges” – Very good singing. Another uncomplicated staging that relies heavily on the performer and she is carrying it well.
Belgium, Gustaph, “Because of You” – I like that the backing singers are prominently featured onstage and in the performance. Very solid though I can’t remember the song when it’s done.
Scooch! I have much warmer feelings toward them than I do for Dustin the Turkey.
Cyprus, Andrew Lambrou, “Broken Heart” – I see we’re steadily moving along on the spectrum of masculine presentation in this semifinal. Seems like vocals are much stronger overall tonight so far, though I do hear a noticeable backing singer in parts.
Iceland, Diljá, “Power” – Hmm, started well, but she started at 99% and kept turning things up. It’s a very physical performance which feels just a little bit out of control.
Greece, Victor Vernicos, “What They Say” – Greece feels rather similar to Iceland in terms of performance, except with a little more anxiety.  The outfit makes him look his age.
Poland, Blanka, “Solo” – It was better than expected, I guess.
Slovenia, Joker Out, “Carpe Diem” – I had a lingering headache before this show and the wobbly side-to-side camera work here is not helping. Singing was good, but it was hard to watch.
Georgia, Iru, “Echo” – Her costuming and styling looks good. It was very dramatic (as expected) but the song has a odd lack of momentum. The chorus gets old quickly.
San Marino, Piqued Jacks, “Like An Animal” – The performance seems to be leaning a bit into the sleaziness which is probably not a bad approach, especially since the lead singer sings well and manages to pull off "sleazy” without straying into “creepy.”
Austria, Teya & Salena, “Who the Hell is Edgar?” – I like the color scheme.  They sound very good singing together and I usually like it when the LED displays are used to create the effect of having lots of backing dancers.
Albania, Albina & Familja Kelmendi, “Duje” – As songs performed by vocal groups at Eurovision go, this is pretty decent, is refreshingly straightforward in its concept, and seems extremely Albanian.
Lithuania, Monika Linkyté, “Stay” – The chorus has a nice swing, and I just like the sound of a group of women singing (see also: Portugal 2022). Improves upon the official video performance.
Australia, Voyager, “Promise” – The songs may or may not be better tonight, but the average vocal performance in this semi with only a few exceptions seems to be far and away better than in the first semifinal (and Australia is one of the better ones).  Not sure about the car but it does seem to fit with the cheesy neon ‘80s vibe.
Interval act: I think this may be the first time in years of watching Eurovision when I would have liked a commentator to provide background details.  It was enjoyable but I would like to put some names to the historical faces.
Hannah Waddingham seems to be having a great time as a host.
That was a fun performance, yet I can’t help but be reminded that fearful and narrow-minded people in many US states would like to make that illegal.
I can hardly believe they even thought about doing the finalist announcements on stage, and am very glad they reconsidered. I do not want to see the cameras wringing pathos from images of disappointed non-qualifiers, and I absolutely do want to see the joy of a contestant being engulfed in hugs and flags by their delegation.

Aaaaand another Eurovision done, and what a glorious show. The interval? Brilliant concept and execution. Daði Freyr? A delight. Mel Giedroyc? I love her. Sam Ryder? Continues to be absolutely UNREAL. Hannah Waddingham? A delight and I love her.
(Has someone gifed Mel "literally milking it" while Hannah tried to put on a respectable show? Apparently not. Just gonna leave this here then:
Tumblr media
Mel, you treasure.)
... Oh, the contestants? Also great, though – for me – nothing as memorable as Subwoolfer or Sam Ryder or Kalush Orchestra. Strong field overall and my main favourites (Finland, Sweden, Norway) all made top 5, woo! Aaaand both my home nations ended up at the bottom of the table next to each other - I'm not surprised about Germany, but slightly gutted for Mae Muller, who had a great song! But I think the live performance fell a bit flat. :(
In conclusion: I will need more Graham Norton + Mel Giedroyc + Hannah Waddingham co-presenting in my life.

i realised that on my last reblog i forgot some things! also i was forced to omit a few things bc i ran out of tag space oops ("nobody cares, lamorna" - shut up i need to document this correctly)
so let's explain:
saw belinda lang in present laughter (also saw serena evans in that!! and david from cold feet robert bathurst, but he's less important to me); the reluctant debutante (also saw jane asher in it!!); and single spies
old times: met kristin scott thomas, saw lia williams + rufus sewell
the audience: met helen mirren + haydn gwynne (this was also the day when i chased jenny agutter accidentally, and i saw anne reid + stephen tompkinson going through the stage door)
passion play: met sam bond, zoe wanamaker, and lyndsey marshal (she wasn't in the play, she was just there with zoe), saw owen teale
the weir: saw dervla kirwan, met ardal o'hanlon + brian cox
private lives: met anna chancellor
the importance of being earnest: met cherie lunghi + nigel havers
relatively speaking (i went to an ayckbourn play for felicity. this is true love and dedication) met felicity kendal
the national theatre masterclasses: went to penelope wilton + david hare's one, saw them (saw penelope out front beforehand!!), met penelope afterwards
also went to amelia bullmore's masterclass, along w lots of my lovely mutuals 💖; we all met her and talked to her at length
kiss me, kate: saw hannah waddingham
guys and dolls: saw sophie thompson, and phyllida law (her + emma's mother) was in the audience
a damsel in distress: saw summer strallen
mrs. pat: saw penelope keith
oklahoma!: saw josie lawrence (also saw her + paul merton at the comedy store one time)
me and my girl: saw caroline quentin, also matt lucas
fleetwood mac: i've seen them live twice, once with chris mcvie
once there was an event that a choir my mum + i used to be in were invited to sing at, and a lot of the other performers / organisers were famous people: julie graham was one of the organisers, so i saw her, alison moyet was performing (i'd already been to one of her concerts, but not met her yet), so i met her then (she hugged me!!!!) and emma kennedy was there bc she and alf are best friends so i stood near her awkwardly; and caitlin moran was also a speaker so i saw her (backstage and onstage) too; and my mum spoke to her
my mum once won tickets to see a bbc show being filmed, and it happened to be upstart crow (you don't choose what you see, you just get allocated something by the bbc people), so we were on set with david mitchell, liza tarbuck, gemma whelan
i've told the story of being caught in the fire w the new tricks actors + sarah beeny SO many times, but i will tell it again if anyone else wants to hear it
comedians/-ennes i've seen live: ed byrne (twice), alan davies, omid djalili, rich hall (i wasn't that keen on seeing omid or rich but my mum made us all go with her and they were better than i'd expected them to be), zoe lyons, tim vine
and finally: i live in the same town as dave benson phillips (of get your own back, british blue's clues, various other children's television), and he used to be (might still be, for all i know) the next door neighbour of a family friend, so i met him at a party at their house once as a child
