my thoughts on aang, morality and the role of the avatar in atla and korra
i don't think aang is a bad character by any means i really quite love how he's written he has very believable flaws and a lot of complexity/depth to him, i think i'm just personally biased to like 'spiritual' and 'holy' type characters. i am actually so glad that the series and also korra explored the flipside of spirituality with tenzin's character and how spirituality is used sometimes to bypass trauma and as a crutch for one's own personal shortcomings. also how kya II and bumi get to see aang as a more complex and flawed character through the lens of him being a less than perfect father.
the show touched on this a lot with aang's internal struggles with forgiveness vs. justice, and how much it tore him up. as if anything the avatar or any other character faces in the show is morally easy and black and white. and i also think that the caveat is the morality of the show is not easily translatable to real life situations especially real world politics, in which people get killed all the time. we also don't have bending in the real world and we do not have the option to non-violently navigate the world or to not have violence or abuse thrust upon us when we seek justice as aang did with ozai during sozin's comet. one thing aang had to learn the hard way as we do in this world is that you can't just avoid and run away from your problems all the time.
also another thing i think of a lot is how real world history and the world history of the four nations in canon cannot be viewed through a 'great man of history' lens... i.e. you cannot believe that great leaders or the avatar are the sole makers of history without the context of what was going on in society, politics and the economy at the time. idk i kind of think of the avatar as like the nuclear bomb of the world, the spirits' way of having 'mutually assured destruction' against humans who throw the world out of balance. but is just one and not the most important way of achieving balance and stability.
and speaking of balance and stability i just watched beginnings 1 & 2 in lok season 2 and loved the backstory of the first avatar wan, it really shows you how the avatar in general was just like a historically contingent figure who happened to be needed in the context of total world war and domination by vaatu. wan himself didn't want to be above others, and i don't think any avatar wants or claims to be (unless a dark avatar such as unalaq or one who is severely undertrained and unbalanced), however the people tend to see them as such. idk anyway this post is over just wanted to type up some disjointed thoughts i had ab lok and atla

thinking about how korra is the last avatar of wan's era and the first avatar of her era
and thinking about how the southern air temple sanctuary avatar statue spiral always would've been completed with korra in the center of it, the 183rd avatar
and thinking about how the temple signals as though it was always destined to be this way, that korra was always meant to be the inflection point of eras, and how she heralded the world down this path forged all by herself through her sheer power and spirit, bridging the worlds and forever changing its landscape. she did that! she both opened the old portals and created a new portal in the first 21 years of her life, in opposite of her predecessor 10,000 years ago, and she brought back the air nation despite her tumultuous heart, and she sacrificed so much of herself to ensure their survival. she is so full of love and compassion and care and she has given so much of herself to the world. and she is the starting point for the the new avatars after her and there is so much that she alone can give them

Avatar Love talk 3: Game vs Action
Follow up from (and also defending Kyo in this vid)
Yangchen: I plead the fifth on what Kuruk said. No idea why you two think you got your horny ass desires from me. Kyoshi: I'm not the one who sensually listened to the sound of Kavik writing with a pencil, but go off? Yangchen: Again, pleading the fifth! Anyway I still think Kyoshi has the least amount of game. Kyoshi: Really? We're still on this? Can't we talk about something else? Wan: Like your mommy issues? Kyoshi, pushing his face away and knocking him down: Ok, defending my "game" it is. Yangchen: Kyoshi, really, just accept it. You can't flirt for shit. Kyoshi: Again, I don't need to. Yangchen: You keep saying that! How do you expect to get anyone if you can't or don't flirt? Kyoshi: I walk into the room and look at them. Maybe smile, if I'm feeling feisty. Yangchen: That's not going to work- Wan: It worked for you, Yangchen. Yangchen: *deflated* Kyoshi: Oh so it's "flirting" and "super game" if Yangchen does it, but if Kyoshi does it then I'm just lucky? Wow. Hmmm. So fair. Yangchen: Kyoshi, you had two years with Rangi and Yun and I had five minutes with Kavik. We are not the same. Kyoshi: Listen, Yangchen, I think we've got it all wrong. It isn't about game or flirting. It's about action. I know how to get my girl going- Wan: Yangchen knows how to get Kavik going too! Yangchen: SHut UP, Wan! .......Yeah I know how to get Kavik going too, blow steam in his ear, fling him off a bison, what's your point????? Korra: Wait, fling him off a-? Kyoshi: Oh no no, Yangchen. That's not what I mean. You see, I'm probably going to go down in history as "World's best daughter-in-law." Whenever I sincerely talk about how I'm going to take care of Rangi or Hei-Ran, and Rangi melts into a literal puddle at my feet. Korra: So, like, you're amazing moral character is how you flirt? Kyoshi: No, it's not flirting. It's doing. Actions. Like I said before, they like me for who I am. And maybe because I have a good smile too. Kuruk: Being good looking does help. Yangchen: Ugh, where are you going with this? Kyoshi: I'm getting to it. What I want to say is, 'What's so great about having game, when the real measure should be the results?' Yangchen: *rolls eyes* 'Results.' Please, Kyoshi. We all know I had Kavik wrapped around my finger. Kyoshi: So you got with him? Yangchen: I-well uh- Kyoshi: Tell me, Yangchen. Which one of us actually GOT their boo in the end? Hm? Yangchen: .......... Kyoshi: Only actions and outcomes matter, Yangchen. What's so great about your "game" if you can't even "win"? Wan: I haven't seen a burn this severe since that volcano took out Roku. O-O Voice on the phone: 911, what's you're emergency? Korra, on the phone: I just witnessed a murder! I mean both parties are already dead-can the dead die twice?????

New eras brought about by Avatars of Fire & Water
I just like this idea that since Korra started a new avatar cycle, she doesn’t want to be one to take all the credit for the avatar’s history with Raava and Harmonic Convergence and she doesn’t want Wan to be forgotten and completely lost to history so her statue is shared with a revamped version of Wan’s and both are embraced by Raava.

Friend: "Humans." Me, thinking about it. Friend: "... of the main characters." Me: "Oh. Suki." Friend: "Why did it take fifteen minutes to get the answer." Avatar Headcanon:
The mystic swamp's Banyan Tree is deeply and spiritually connected to the Avatar.
Tumblr media
It was under the shade of this tree (back when it was significantly smaller) that the first Avatar was born (don't talk to me about Wan, I am rejecting his existence)
This created a bond between the tree and the Avatar. The first Avatar later returned to the tree in their old age and passed away there while meditating. Their bones are still buried deep under the roots.
But the bond continued and grew in all of the Avatar's subsequent lifetimes. Each Avatar in turn was drawn to the tree (which had later grown into an entire swamp) and visited it at least once.

I went back to the original cover I had made years ago and used my iPad for a new and improved version, and I honestly am much more proud of this one. Also an updated version of the title.
And I started a separate ig for this fan fiction project: @thejourneyofwanofficial for more future updates! It is a written story, but will feature some illustrations.
So if you’ve been interested in the idea of a project/show/movie/comic/book/etc about Wan’s life after Harmonic Convergence, feel free to like, follow, reblog, and share!

After rewatching tlok i'm still holding on to my theory that Omashu either was a lion turtle city in the past or still is a lion turtle city and the turtle is just dormant (or dead, which is more morbid but still possible)
If you compare the design of Omashu to the design of multiple lion turtle cities, they both appear to be very stacked cities, with buildings across all different heights. They're both circular cities as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The origin tale of Omashu dates from around the conception of earthbending, which we now know to be about 10.000 years prior to Korra's time (aka Wan's time). Oma, the woman from the story, is said to be the first earthbender. Lion turtles granted people the ability to bend, which both Oma and Shu used to make the secret tunnel leading to and away from the city. The difference is, Oma and Shu learned the technique from badgermoles, which is why they were considered so powerful. (Just like Wan, who learned from the dragon during his time away from the city).
There's a very real possibility that there was a war within the turtle city (we saw all the class problems in Wan's city, and humans are gonna human) and in order to escape the war, Oma and Shu asked the turtle for earthbending so they could escape and be together safely.
Tumblr media
On the avatar wiki, it also explains that after the era of the spirits, during the era of the Avatar, the lion turtles got hunted into near extinction. Some turtles chose to hide, like the turtle Aang came across in the show who chose to pose as an island. Earth lion turtles are able to bury themselves into the ground. Omashu could very well be an earth turtle that's buried underground to hide from society, and because so much time has passed history turned into myth.
I know it's a loose theory but i just can't get over the fact that the history of earthbending near Omashu and then the history of lion turtles seems to contradict but also align so well. It makes sense that the two lovers were granted the ability of earthbending from their own turtle and then learned how to use it from the badgermoles.
