I am a human author telling human stories to other humans. Supporting human artists to illustrate these human stories is the only logical and ethical choice.
@thistlearts is my cover artist. He did incredible paintings for Mr Warren's Profession, Oak King Holly King, Tales from Blackthorn Briar, and Fiorenzo.
@lauravian_arts designed adorable stickers for Oak King Holly King. (Available now in my etsy - and perhaps soon, a Kickstarter?)
Collaborating with human artists is a joy and a dream.
AI is unethical, illegal, and dangerous theft from real human beings. No excuses.
(And thank you to @noahhawthorneauthor for inspiring this post!)

Kaidan Revoiced: Community Expansion Content Frequently Asked Questions
Tumblr media
Looking for more information about the Kaidan Workshop as a whole? Check here first!
What will be included in the Kaidan Revoiced: Community Expansion mod?
To list every small addition and fix would make this FAQ unbearably long, but here are the key highlights:
Remastered and rebuilt from the ground up! Every single line of code, every asset, and every script has been overhauled – our new follower framework eliminates long-standing bugs and quality of life issues that plagued the original mod
All new voice acting of Kaidan by the talented Paul Warren
Many new QOL features for Kaidan such as:
Wardrobe management
Pronoun selection
Combat damage adjustment
Immersive settings system through dialogue
Audio restoration and engineering on supporting characters from Kaidan 1 sources
Reviewed and updated quest commentary conditions - you may hear lines from the original script that you’ve never had the chance to hear before!
Customize your playthrough by choosing a nickname that Kaidan can use for you - or ask to not be called by a nickname (ie. "Dragonborn")
Players can now obtain the custom home Autumnwatch without marrying Kaidan if they so choose, or via the original romance route
New high poly and HD assets while preserving LivTempleton’s original mod aesthetic
Do I need the original LivTempleton Kaidan 2 mod?
No, Kaidan Revoiced: Community Expansion mod is standalone, and has no other mod requirements. It is not compatible with the original Kaidan 2 mod.
Can I use KR:CE with [insert Kaidan replacer]/[insert Kaidan patch]?
KR:CE will not be compatible out of the box with ANY existing Kaidan replacers, patches, or extensions. KR:CE uses a new framework that current visual replacers and compatibility patches simply will not work with; however, converting existing replacers and creating new compatibility patches for other mods (such as Legacy of The Dragonborn) is a relatively easy process we are more than happy to assist in.
Besides that, we have incorporated many different Kaidan fixes that have made several of his old patches and mods obsolete. Below is a non-exhaustive list of the fixes and mods included in KR:CE.
Extensive dialogue tweaks & subtitle fixes
Stat & combat balancing
Follower distance adjustments
HD Armor Retexture
Shackles Fix
Select parts of Kaidan’s Armory and Kaidan’s Arsenal
Dwarven Mail CC conflict patch
Immersive Start (pending current Community Poll)
Kaidan Refreshed
Additionally, Axarien’s Animations, as well as Kaidan Silvered, have been updated and will publish concurrently with KR:CE.
Patches and modules that will need to be converted &/or patched for compatibility include, but aren’t limited to:
All existing visual replacers
All existing Autumnwatch replacers
Legacy of the Dragonborn followers patch
Hjertesten
Blackthorn
MCO animation folders
Custom DAR/OAR animations
Can I use KR:CE with a follower manager mod, such as NFF or AFF?
No, KR:CE’s custom follower framework will break if you import Kaidan into any such mod. As we have rebuilt it from the ground up, any requested features that the community wishes to have implemented can be investigated and integrated relatively seamlessly; these can always be suggested via any of our socials for consideration.
Will Kaidan still have his interactions with Lucien?
Unfortunately, we are unable to coordinate the revoicing effort of the Lucien-Kaidan interactions for our initial 1.0 launch – it is something that we are very interested in pursuing once schedules permit.
Will Kaidan still curse/drink in KR:CE?
The short answer: Yes. Our design policy with regards to any changes we make to Kaidan is one that aims to be lore friendly, as well as keeping his characterization as close as possible to his original depiction.
The long answer, as per our Writing Team:
-- Please note the response below contains NSFW language --
"Kaidan's cursing and drinking is something our community has definitely weighed in on, spurring an entire section of exposition in our style guide to address it. Our main concern is that some of his language is anachronistic, and we want to address that.
In the base Skyrim script, mild language such as damn, piss, and bastard are used throughout the world, while other words like bitch, whore, sex, and ass are used less frequently. It was clearly LivTempleton's intent to have Kaidan be someone who is unafraid to let a foul word slip here and there, but not so much that he's swearing like a sailor. Hell and fuck are both used by Kaidan, and despite not being strictly “lore friendly,” both swears are canonically used within The Elder Scrolls world. Similarly with regards to drinking, Kaidan’s base script contains several lines that clearly show he enjoys having a drink here and there, but not so much that he’s a drunken mess.
We are considering replacements for the anachronistic swears with something more lore friendly in future Workshop Original content, but we don't have any specific plans to expand the amount of swearing or drinking lines he has by any significant amount at this time. Ultimately, sometimes less is more."
Can I use KR:CE with Extended Edition?
No, KR:CE will not be compatible out of the box with ANY existing Kaidan replacers, patches, or extensions. Further, as Extended Edition has the original Kaidan 2 as a mod requirement, it is unfortunately incompatible with our expansion.
Will KR:CE be ported to Xbox/Playstation/Switch?
For Xbox - Yes, we have plans to do so (and have been building KR:CE with console compatibility in mind), but in the event that we are unable to do so in house, we would be more than happy to coordinate with a knowledgeable member of the community to port KR:CE.
For Playstation & Switch - Unfortunately due to the limitations of modding on this particular console, we cannot release KR:CE on either of these platforms.
Can I use KR:CE with Skyrim VR?
Yes, KR:CE should be compatible out of the box.
Will KR:CE be backported to Skyrim: Legendary Edition?
We currently have no plans to backport KR:CE to LE. However, we would be more than happy to coordinate with a knowledgeable member of the community to port KR:CE.
Is the Workshop planning on creating interactions with [insert your favorite custom voiced follower]?
Interactions with other custom voiced followers has always been a goal of ours! Right now we are focused primarily on releasing the 1.0 version of KR:CE, and creating an entirely new script with another content creator will add too much production time to our current workflow. However, once we begin transitioning towards Workshop Original Script production post-launch, we will be revisiting this topic in full force.
Can I make a compatibility patch for [insert your favorite mod]?
In general, yes! Link us to the content you wish to make a patch for, so we can ensure it does not violate our Terms of Use Policy (see below). Besides that, all we ask is that you please credit us as The Kaidan Workshop, as well as crediting LivTempleton for providing her assets to the community.
Dragonborn Voice Over/AI Voice Generation Policy
The Kaidan Workshop, as well as our VA Paul Warren, have a strict policy against the utilization of AI Voice Generation. We do NOT consent to the use of Kaidan’s new lines by Mr. Warren in any mod &/or media content that uses AI Voice Generation as a permanent fixture of its content, nor do we consent to the utilization of any of our content in helping to train AI Voice Generators. Mods that use AI voices as placeholders while official lines are being recorded will be evaluated on a case by case basis. In the case of the popular Dragonborn Voice Over mod, only a voice from a human voice actor who has consented to their voice and its likeness being used for AI Voice Generation will be considered for a compatibility patch. Otherwise, the above no-tolerance policy stands.
NSFW Patch Policy
The Workshop, as well as our VA Paul Warren has a strict policy against the utilization of KR:CE in NSFW content. The only exception to this rule are nude body replacers for mods such as HIMBO or SOS.

Can't Go To Hell - Ragnor Fell & Ty Blackthorn (Gen)
Ragnor Fell, Ty Blackthorn, Catarina Loss (mentions of Livvy and Kit)
Wordcount: 1,926
Ragnor and Ty's relationship at the Scholomance is unorthodox but they have more in common than first meets the eye. (Contains spoilers for the most recent Secrets of Blackthorn Hall post)
Dark skies above him, brilliant with stars. Rough, uneven stone beneath his feet. The cold, mountain air biting at his cheeks. The faint warmth from his tin camping mug, filled with sweet tea and cupped in his hands.
Ragnor exhaled. And stilled, feeling the overwhelming panic subside, its icy grip slowly loosening. He quietly went through the breathing exercises that Cat had taught him, when he was freshly-released from his captivity.
At this stage, several years on, he could get through the days without issue but at night, particularly in his warren-like room at the Scholomance... Well. He was grateful for the expansive roof and the access to it granted by his tutor status.
Behind him, he heard a scraping sound, a boot on a flagstone.
He turned to see a dark shape jump down from the wide, flat ledge that overlooked a dizzying drop to the mountainside and the path up to the Scholomance.
Wayward student or assailant, either way it interrupted his evening. An irritated sigh slipped from his lips, and he conjured up a small ball of pure energy.
The figure froze, and turned to face him. Ragnor caught a glimpse of a pale face, framed by black hair, and grey eyes that shuttered down, even as he stood up taller, the instincts drilled into him by the Scholomance’s tutors second nature now.
“Sha- Mr Fell, I was just leaving.” Tiberius Blackthorn’s voice was scratchy, as if he were coming down with a cold.
“Tiberius,” Ragnor sighed. He dimmed his energy ball. “This area is off-limits to students.”
“Yes, I know,” came the response. He didn’t offer an apology but instead, an explanation. “But this is the best place to stargaze.”
“Beside a hundred foot sheer drop?” Ragnor asked drily.
Tiberius shrugged. “I wasn’t going to fall.”
“Good, because after learning what your family is capable of, I don’t want to have to explain to them your untimely death.”
A tightening mouth and clenched fists, and a small dart of a glance to the left.
“Is she here?” Ragnor phrased it delicately.
“Livvy? Yeah.” The boy’s voice was soft.
Ragnor took a moment to look up. To watch the coldly impersonal beauty of the stars but also to seek out a particular constellation. “Gemini - the Twins are especially bright at this time of year in the Northern Hemisphere,” he said, pointing.
He watched as Tiberius nodded, following, a small smile splitting his face. “We could rarely stargaze in L.A. because of the air pollution.”
Ragnor nodded, suppressing an internal sigh. “I will leave you to it, then,” he said. “But do it from the roof, not the ledge.”
God, Magnus would laugh at the way he had become a mother hen in his old age, Ragnor thought, as he headed inside. But he felt oddly protective of this young Blackthorn. Or guilty, his internal voice chimed in before he could shoo it away.
The next day, after his history classes ended, he dropped two hefty volumes on Tiberius’s desk. The other students gave him a wide berth as they gathered up their own books and left for their next class.
“The Waypaths of the Sky and- A Journeyman’s Guide to the Constellations,” Tiberius read. His eyes were wide as he looked up at Ragnor.
“In case you were interested in further guidance around stargazing. It’s a useful skill to have as a Centurion,” Ragnor said, gruffly. “Or- as a general hobby.”
Tiberius was quiet for a moment, fingers tracing along the spines.
Ragnor turned to leave.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
**
He thought that would be it. That the boy would perhaps look at the books out of politeness. Or skim them and return them one day before class started. The curriculum at the Scholomance was relentless in its expectations of its graduates - and there was rarely time to get extra reading in.
But in hindsight, he should’ve known better - or guessed, at least. He had observed Tiberius - alongside his friend, Christopher, for the better part of two months, as they stubbornly pursued their ill-fated necromancy attempt, despite all his carefully placed hurdles. He had watched as the boy arrived at the Scholomance, eyes downcast but shoulders set firm as he set himself to the task of learning a tough curriculum that hardened and moulded its young charges.
So when he showed up to Ragnor’s office a week later, he handed the books back, and then after asking politely, sat down in his sole, beaten up armchair, and asked question after question around the returned volumes.
Ragnor didn’t mind.
At the end of their session, Tiberius rose, and hesitated. “I haven’t seen you on the roof since that first night you caught me and Livvy,” he noted.
Ragnor studied him, wondering how to phrase his response. “I haven’t needed it.”
Many people would likely have caught the hesitation and refrained from asking further.
“Why did you need it?”
Ragnor felt old suddenly. “Good evening, Mr Blackthorn,” he said, dismissing him and showing him the door.
Tiberius left, a small crease between his eyebrows. But he also left with two new books on divining and the use of hearthcraft.
He came back often, challenging Ragnor with questions and theories around the lore he was expected to learn, alongside specialised weapons training, and intelligence gathering.
There was a hunger to his gaze, a sharp intelligence - a yearning - particularly during the most esoteric and challenging classes, where most of his contemporaries yawned and dozed as Ragnor taught theories on dimensional magic.
Most Shadowhunters treated their schooling as simply another tool in their arsenal in fighting demons. A means to achieve their angelic calling.
Not Tiberius Blackthorn. He probed. And questioned. And theorised. And experimented.
(Not always successfully - the Sensor incident put Ragnor in a bad mood for days, and he refused entrance to his office for a few days, just to achieve some peace and quiet)
It energised Ragnor, to have such a pupil in his class. It also terrified him.
He mentioned this, matter-of-factly to Catarina, one evening as they sat in front of a roaring fire, a patchwork blanket tossed over their knees and a plate of shortbread biscuits they were slowly working through. Outside Catarina’s cottage, a January snow storm raged.
“Hmmm. Who is he reminding you of?” Cat asked him.
Ragnor hesitated. How did Catarina always get to the heart of the issue?
“-- Morgenstern,” he admitted. “I haven’t had such a promising student since Valentine Morgenstern.”
She pursed her lips. She didn’t immediately dismiss his comparison.
“Well,” she said gently. “I’m not sure I see that same darkness. But. You have a chance to do it differently this time.”
“Keep a closer eye?” Ragnor grumbled. “I suppose so– although I turned my back for one moment and he and Herondale were off achieving the black magic that I specifically told them not to do. I’ll have to sleep sometime.”
Catarina stared into the fire, a troubled look on her face. She knew as well as Ragnor did, the tangled web of politics and prophecies that surrounded the Lost Herondale. And the potential role other Shadowhunters - such as the Blackthorn family - could play in the coming years around him.
“Provide the guidance and guide rails for him to achieve great things,” she said finally. “Encourage Tiberius’s interests… but push back against any darker siren call of power, and let him understand the reasons why some things are prohibited. Make sure he knows the history, the consequences. No one makes the right decisions unless given the chance to understand them.”
Ragnor reached over to squeeze her shoulder. “That is good advice, thank you.”
So when Tiberius came to him, asking for help in deciphering the curse on his family’s home, Ragnor spent some time in the Spiral Labyrinth pulling out old maps, and brushing up on his ley line knowledge.
When Tiberius asked whether he could learn to open Portals, Ragnor indulged his curiosity - while clearly stating that the boy wasn’t to perform any of it without his supervision. Tiberius easily acquiesced to the request, and they spent several relaxing evenings going through the basics, before finally putting it into practice by sending him through to Blackthorn Hall’s kitchen to visit family.
--
“Do you believe in redemption?” Ragnor looked up with a start to meet Tiberius’s gaze, as he sat slumped in the armchair. There was a miserable, distant look in his grey eyes, and he was worrying several threads in his white cuffs. He was ten minutes back from his visit to Blackthorn Hall. Something had gone badly wrong while he was there, that much was clear, and Ragnor had steered him quietly to his normal perch in the office.
Ragnor watched the boy, and while he usually didn’t notice the ghostly presence of Livia Blackthorn, if he looked out of the corner of his eye, he could see the faint outline of a young girl dressed in white, hovering over the chair. He and Tiberius had had a standing gentleman’s agreement to not mention the necromancy- and the results that trapped his sister on a spectral plane but… Ragnor was wondering if that had been the wrong approach.
Cat’s words echoed in his head.
He chose his next words carefully. “Decisions made in our past don’t have to define us, Tiberius. I- I think if a person decides to make amends, as much as it is possible to, and works to better themselves, never again committing the same grave error- there is a way to move past it.”
Tiberius still looked pensive, and his hand rose to clasp onto the chain he always wore around his neck. Which held a locket, and a heron sigil. He grasped them both tightly.
Oh.
Ragnor suddenly understood who had been on the other side of the Portal. And the platitudes he might’ve continued with, died in his throat. Unwillingly, his own atrocities committed in Shinyun and Sammael’s name rose up, and he pushed down bile.
“Redemption is a tricky business,” he said finally. “We can work on ourselves but we cannot force others to forgive us.”
“I know that,” Tiberius said roughly. He brushed a hand over his eyes. “I know that.”
Ragnor felt sympathy but he didn’t add anything further, until he was certain that what he was about to say wouldn’t further hurt the grieving, lost youth in front of him.
“But - one of the hard earned lessons I’ve learned in my long years on this earth, is the amazing ability for forgiveness from- ” He cleared his throat. “- especially from those who care for us. Even if it’s not immediate.”
Tiberius looked lost. “So I’ll need to wait years?” he asked.
“Perhaps. Or it may come tomorrow. Or- it may never come,” Ragnor replied. He didn’t want to offer false hope. “But the point is, Tiberius- you are not defined by your mistakes. But by what you learn from them and what you do next. That’s all you can do. The rest is up to him.”
There was silence and Ragnor wondered if he had gone too far.
Then, a short, shuddering sigh, and Tiberius stood. “I understand, I think,” he said. “Thank you.”
He started walking to the door.
“We’ll continue tomorrow with further study on Portal runes,” Ragnor reminded him. “Don’t be late.”
Tiberius nodded. Once he had exited, Ragnor let out a large sigh and lifted his eyes to the clock above the door. Barely noon. Too old for this nonsense (but even he knew he was lying to himself).
--
Notes: I've been fascinated at the relationship hinted at during Secrets of Blackthorn Hall for Ty and Ragnor. Alongside wondering why Ragnor has been so willing to help (he's no Magnus, with his weakness for Shadowhunters, right?) So this is my attempt at figuring out why they work so well together.

What couples do you think we’ll see pair off tonight? Any exes you wanna see give it another shot? New couples you think would be interesting?
“I’ve already got my eyes on Laszlo and Louisa--could something as simple and sweet as a dance turn into so much more? Then, of course, there’s the tension building between Ares and Calliope--will our graceful duchess of the Spring Court finally force Ares to acknowledge how he’s wronged her over the years? And what of Henryk and Tatiana--will this tearful exchange in the gardens teeter close to infidelity on the princess’ part?
Jacen and Victoria seem to be engaging in a tense and emotional exchange; I’d love to see them wolf out at the end of the night and run away into the woods together. And then, of course, I’m just dying to see Rowan and Cassian reunite, but that’s just between you and me.”

I just need to wrap up Isaiah’s mini-arc (one more post), and then I’m going to move on to a bit of development for Eileen, who is a very interesting little dragon. I won’t spoil anything here, but let’s just say Mergo is involved.
After that, we’ll be sliding on into some interactions between Emil and Penumbra, with a side of Devola and Penumbra’s erstwhile captor, the Shadowling. This’ll delve into some of my Shade headcanons as well.
Then we’re going to explore Oya and Ogun. I teased at their involvement with Fire’s BotE lore, and I’m going to expand upon that through Oya’s (previous) relationship with Calcifer. (Branwen is not going to be pleased when company arrives unannounced and uninvited.)
THEN it’ll finally be time for Aurelius and Halcyon’s wedding, and I may get around to the Big Confrontation between Dreamweaver and Aeternus, who some of you may remember as Aurelius’ disapproving father. That’s going to be fun to write, I do so love when Dreamweaver loses their temper.
After that, I’m hoping I’ll have enough of my Clan Blackthorn dragons assembled to start the exodus arc. I still need to grab all my SOMA fandragons too, but I’m not going to get into their lore until @nostlenne returns from the war, so Blackthorn comes first.
Aurelius and Halcyon’s wedding takes place during Brightshine Jubilee 2020, so that and everything before it will cover at least half of last year’s backlog. I anticipate that Clan Blackthorn’s predicament will easily cover the latter half of 2020. Then we’ll be (mostly) caught up.
Clan Imperator and the Warren are still chilling in the background, and the former might make a couple more appearances throughout the 2020 backlog. The Warren is out of commission for the time being; Eyja is doing some serious scheming, and I don’t want to interrupt her. Pros: we’ll get more Caesar lore. Cons: I’m going to hurt my boy.
Anyway, that’s what anyone who still reads my lore can expect in the foreseeable future. I still love FR, my dragons, and my lore, but writer’s block is one hell of a drug, so I’m infinitely grateful for y’all’s patience. :’)

Road to Hell (Wait for Me, I’m Coming) Part Two - Kit / Ty Hadestown AU
(Part One)
Ty rubbed his face tiredly, as he stared at another chicken-scratch parchment in the Unseelie Court’s library. He looked up and saw that Dru was fast asleep, gently snoring into her crossed arms, while Anush was dazedly flipping through pages of a huge leatherbound book. Mark had left a while ago, muttering something about getting some food for them but he hadn’t returned yet.
Ty looked down at his research, the collected notes he had written over the last day and a half and suddenly it seemed pitiful, compared to the task ahead. Ty could feel the panic rising, his chest tight and he concentrated on the feel of the rough paper underneath his fingertips. He had to get Kit out of Hell and he was taking notes, like he was back in the Scholomance and this was an assignment, instead of… instead of the most important fucking thing in the world.
He hadn’t told Kit how he felt yet. They had only just re-entered each other’s lives over the past two months and were still doing a wary dance as they relearned each other’s steps after three years apart.
There had been a hesitant scene in the L.A. Institute’s atrium when Kit had strolled in, almost as if he had never left, all sunshine gold hair, eyes the colour of a clear autumn sky, and a husky voice with just the slightest hint of an English accent.
There had been the angry, sparse time when Helen had sent them on a patrol together and they had strode along in miserable silence until Kit had finally stopped him and asked where Livvy was- and Ty had snapped back at him, the wound still raw, that he was trying to make amends for everything he’d done but he’d had to do it alone and he wasn’t ready to talk about it. The fragile moment when Kit’s face had crumpled briefly and he told Ty he was sorry he had left and that Ty had had to do it alone. And the appearance of the Raum demons a minute later, interrupting them- but then the glimpse of how it could be, as Kit had stopped him after the attack and insisted on drawing the iratze on Ty’s forearm, his face a study of concentration as they sat in the car before driving back to the Institute.
There had been fleeting, glorious moments in the training room when they had sparred, the pretence of combat a freeing sensation for Ty, as he felt able to finally touch Kit and the look Kit had given him, his breath an uneven whisper on Ty’s collarbone after he pinned him to the floor, almost helping Ty make his decision. But it hadn’t been enough - and the agonising choice of whether to knock - and still being a coward and walking away, almost too quickly, from Kit’s door.
And then that moment in the clearing. When Kit had done the stupid, honourable Herondale thing and sacrificed himself for the rest of them. Ty didn’t think he’d do the same if the situation was reversed - but then again, he was a Blackthorn.
From far away, he could hear a tearing, ripping sound and he came back to himself, noting the confetti of yellow parchment floating down to the ground around him, as he paced back and forth, paper strewn around him and his hands moving almost mechanically as he shredded his carefully taken notes.
Anush looked over at him, finally noticing Ty’s pacing and his eyes widened. And just then, Mark re-appeared in the doorway, carrying a large tray. He let out a curse as he saw Ty, almost knocking over the tray in his hurry to put it down. He crossed the room quickly to stand in front of Ty, gentle as he placed his hands over his brother’s as he clasped them a firm grip. This time, Ty let him in and he drew in a few deep, shuddering breaths as he let the small remains of paper drop.
“It’s all right,” he told Mark. “I have them all memorised.”
Mark nodded. “It’s wise to not leave the notes to Hade unguarded,” he said. He paused. “Although perhaps a bit unkind to the brownie cleaners - but no matter, I’ll arrange to speak to them.”
There was a stretch of silence. “I’m leaving tomorrow morning,” Ty said. “I can’t wait too long- we don’t know if time moves differently in Hades compared to the rest of Faerie and I can’t risk it.”
Mark’s eyes searched Ty’s face - not seeking eye contact but a different kind of reassurance. He seemed to find it, and he dropped Ty’s hands. “Then we’ll prepare to go together - you’re not going alone,” he said. A chorus joined in - a rousing if slightly terrified response from Anush, and a sleepy affirmation from Dru, who appeared to have just woken up.
Ty felt a brief moment of terror that he was bringing more people into what his research told him was likely a suicide mission… but the ice cold shiver of memories and Livvy’s pleading, drained face swam into view and he swallowed his protests. He didn’t think he could go through it alone again.
The ivory keys of the grand piano were always immaculately polished and Kit wondered whose job it was to clean them. His job was to play the music and he thanked - well, it wasn’t God and it wasn’t the Angel Raziel - but he thanked his lucky stars that he had picked up some basic songs from Jace the previous summer when he had visited the New York Institute, and that Jem had considered learning to read music by sight an essential part of a well-rounded education, alongside Kit’s Shadowhunter training and mundane school.
In contrast to the bright electric fluorescence that lit the warren of overly warm machinery-filled rooms that Kit had started to refer to as Hadestown, Persephone’s conservatory was different, with its faded white, latticed walls and high glass ceilings letting in the smallest fraction of outside light.
It reminded him of where he had lived with Jem, Tessa and Mina - in… C- In Cir- Kit’s mind stuttered. He didn’t know how long he had been here - the days were starting to blur together and he was worried he was starting to forget more than just the little things.
He stared down at the piano keys as the large ornamental clock on the wall struck eleven. Like clockwork precision, Persephone waltzed in, her movements sultry but sulky as always. She threw some new music books at Kit and he caught them awkwardly, balancing them on his lap.
“These ones - I don’t care which one you play first today,” she said, sitting down on the long fainting couch across from him, her black hair spilling over the white satin fabric as she rested her head. Kit tried not to stare at her deep decolletage, which was prominently framed by the tight red dress she was wearing. She noticed as he turned away and her gaze was hungry as she looked at him.
Kit looked down as he chose a music book and blindly opened it to a first page he saw. He started playing, a crooning jazz number singing out underneath his fingers. He didn’t know if it was because he was in Faerie or the spell he could feel he was under but he was a much better musician here than in the mundane world. The tight, lost look on Persephone’s face began to relax as the melody echoed in the conservatory.
As he finished the first song and began another, his movements almost automatic, Kit allowed himself to think again, of escape - of returning to the land of the living - to his family, to the Shadowhunter institutions he was slowly becoming accustomed to again, to… Ty. To what might be between them, although he had almost strangled that hope, locked it away tight and deep inside his heart. What they had resurrected - if that word could be used - given previous circumstances was almost a miracle, Kit thought, hard fought for and one that he hadn’t been about to throw away on foolish too-soon declarations of love. Even so, when he had seen that faerie arrow aimed straight at Ty’s heart, he hadn’t hesitated. He might not be ever able to tell Ty how he felt but at least he had been able to show it in his actions, he mused.
And he wasn’t about to give up on leaving this hellhole, although each unrelenting day in this dull, dark and depressing place of dust and hollow-eyed workers pulled at that hope. But he clung to his memories - to the now-dimly lit memories of the outside world. Of his love for a black-haired, grey-eyed boy with his sharp intellect and fierce love of his family, who saw the world in a different light than most, and was - had been willing - and maybe, might be willing again to share it with Kit.
The last note rang out as he finished the song and he drew his hands back, muscles aching. He had been playing for nearly an hour. In the sudden silence, Persephone let out a ragged sigh.
“Who is the love that you play for, boy?” she said, her voice ancient and rough. She rose from the couch and crossed the floor, her dress swishing across the smooth marble. “I have heard many love songs in my years… but yours is one that I haven’t heard in an eon. Tell me their name.” Her green eyes glistened with unshed tears.
But Kit remained silent. He knew instinctively if he said Ty’s name, he would lose it. He shook his head, his lips pressed together.
Persephone narrowed her eyes, and she reached out, as if to stroke his brow. Kit evaded her and stood up. He had been coming to play for her for several times now, and he had started to learn her ways. He needed a distraction. “I saw that crack in the wall- is that new, Persephone?” Kit lowered his voice as he gestured across the room. “I know you’re a captive as much as I am. Let me help you- we can escape together and then I will tell you.”
Persephone’s laugh was as dry as a winter’s wind as she sized him up. “Oh, that’s adorable, my sweet-” she said. “But I made my choice long ago and it’s--” her eyes suddenly moved past him. “It’s the love I deserve,” her voice suddenly was filled with honey and springtime.
Kit knew that Hades had arrived, and he tried to quell the fear rising in him as he turned around.
The man - fae - god or whatever he was - was standing in the doorway, casually watching them.
“Leave him,” he said in his deep voice. “I desire your company.”
Persephone swept past Kit without another word and draped herself across Hades. “Of course my darling- I am here. What shall we do?”
Hades took a moment to whisper into her ear and Persephone looked uncomfortable but let out a deep, throaty chuckle. “Of course.”
Hades smiled, with a devilish twist and he pulled her away, starting down the hall.
But then he stopped and looked back at Kit. “Your shift here has ended - get back on the assembly line.”
Kit looked down at his rough worker’s uniform, smeared with rust and dust and he forced himself to nod evenly - he knew from past experience that it was unwise to argue with Hades.
Hades’ firelit eyes swept over him. “And once that is over - come see me in my office.”
And at that, Kit knew that he was in trouble. Hades had summoned him twice since his arrival to his office, after the initial contract signing. Each time afterwards Kit had found himself weak and gasping on the floor outside, his mind blank and unsure of what had passed behind the walls of the office. Nothing good, he thought grimly - and that was likely the cause of his increasingly fuzzy memory recall.
He needed to escape and soon. He nodded again and Hades left with Persephone. Kit started to make his way to the factory floor. On his way out of the conservatory, he bumped into a small, bird-framed girl with a luminous beauty and whose too-large eyes must have been lively once but were now faded and glazed over with the thousand yard stare that all Hades’ workers had. That he might soon have. “What’s your name?” Kit asked the girl, trying not to sound desperate.
She looked up at him. “I- Eu- I…” she looked puzzled and sad. “I don’t know.” she said.
Kit felt a stab of despair.
