So I have a question and you kinda seem like the person to ask...

I know you do a lot of research for the costumes of your asoiaf art and I was wondering if you had any ressources for weapons ?

For context, I'm trying to draw Book!Needle but I don't know what would be the real world equivalent to said sword ? I looked it up and a few people are saying it's close to a rapier or a smallsword (which is what is on the wiki too) and it fits the description but in the illustrated version of a game of thrones it just looks like A smaller sword made for a child which seems less accurate (but also swords for children were actually a thing in Europe so that didn't help)

Maybe for the sake of simplicity, when I draw Needle, I go for a stereotypical little sword. With a cross guard, without the typical “rings” of a rapier.

However, I share the opinion that the main historical inspiration for the Braavosi blades are in fact the rapiers. We know that waterdancers use their swords mostly for duels or for personal defense. This are swords for civilian use, therefore they should be designed to be hold by a person whose fingers are not protected by the gauntlet of an armor. This is why it make sense for them to have a more protected grip like that of a rapier, or something similar like a side-sword.

(I'm not an expert, just an amateur, so correct me if I say inaccuracies)

arya plays on the girls rubgy team. she started the team herself because she wasn't allowed to play on the middle school football team. meant to parallel ned getting her into waterdancing when traditional westerosi swordfighting wasn't allowed

sansa is a soprano in the school chorus. cersei is her chorus teacher that used to be the school's big soloist when she was a student but now transfer student margaery tyrell is the lead vocalist who came with a letter of rec from principal bobby b

jon is in the school JROTC. signed up because his uncle did it and later joined the military. forced to stay in it after getting caught by the school security guards trying to visit his brother Robb who's the same age but a grade older and already in college. catelyn either got robb to skip a grade or jon held back bc she's that crazy pta mom

robb is a college freshman but still lives at home with cat and ned to save money (the starks are rich but feel like robb needs to be a man and pay his own way or soemthing). met his girlfriend jeyne in their intro the business class and had a brief pregnancy scare leading to an engagement 8 weeks into the semester (#ringbyspring baby)

bran used to think he was gonna grow up and be a pro football player (football is the modern knighthood in my AU apparently) but jamie the football coach/health teacher pushed him off the bleachers and broke his legs (rip)

rickon just got diagnosed with ADHD and claims shaggydog is his emotional support animal so he's the super popular kid in elementary school with a giant wolf dog at recess. all the staff hate him except his teaching aid osha

theon lives in the stark basement and tries to deal shitty weed at the kids' high school after he dropped out of college one semester in (he was a peace war and defense major, and yes before you ask that was a real major at my college)

i'm a firm believer that if there wasn't a war of the five kings and the starks never went south, later in life arya would had to wed a northern lord, unlike sansa, arya always has loved the north and never really cared about the south, so from the way i see it, sansa would insist to be married to a southern house and i believe that catelyn would want that for her since in agot we have her thinking about how "sansa would shine in the south" and i believe for arya, ned would look more for a northern house, because he knows better than most that arya has the wolfblood that both, his brother and sister used to have and yeah i know dorne is the furthest south from the north you can get, but at the same time i like the idea of edricxarya in this au, that's where i would like for arya and ned dayne to meet at a tourney, where arya was forced to assist, and i can see a lyanna-arya parallel happening like in the books when lyanna rescued howland and arya rescued mycah, only this time with a dornish squire, i think edric would be absolutely enchanted by the brave tiny girl that rescued him and at the other side arya would like that edric doesn't seem to dislike that her, being a lady of a great house, takes waterdancing lessons and knows how to use her thin little sword and that's how their friendship starts and of course arya is a realist at heart, she would know that sooner than later she would have to get married to form a political alliance and there's not escaping from it and i think she would prefer to marry an old friend than a complete stranger, and that's how i see the stark-dayne alliance being formed, by arya's own decision

outRAGEOUS that we didn't get more syrio and arya adventures. grrm gives us like,,, two chapters of this delightful student-teacher relationship and then he DIES for her and that's it. it's so clear that he's fond and proud of her - arya is, after all, every mentor's dream student. i would love an alternate universe where arya flees to braavos with syrio at the end of got and gets the full waterdancer training she deserves.

what their short training DOES achieve is giving arya a strong foundation for survival later on in the books. it helps her hone her instincts and keep a clear head in dire circumstances: "fear cuts deeper than swords". she never becomes a full waterdancer but that's because arya stark is many things at once, her incredible adaptability meaning she's the sum of her experiences. syrio recognised that physical and mental potential before anyone and i'm sure he would have shaped it with immense care. arya stark learnt from her suffering but she deserved kinder teachers.
