A bill to lower the cost of a lifesaving medication is headed to the Governor’s desk.
The proposal, which passed the General Assembly, would cap the cost of a twin pack of EpiPens at $60.
Families who need them say it would make a huge difference.
“You shouldn’t have to go, ‘Am I going to pay a bill or am I going to make sure that my child has this medication,’” Tiffany Mathis, the CEO and executive director of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Illinois, said.
One night, Mathis’ daughter was eating butter pecan ice cream, when her face and lips started to swell. At the hospital, doctors discovered she had a tree nut allergy.
Her daughter has needed to carry an EpiPen for nearly a decade. But the lifesaving medication can come at a high cost.
“I was a single mom, I was on Medicaid, she was on All Kids insurance, and around that time, some years later, the EpiPen skyrocketed, and they went from no copay, low copay to $100 an EpiPen,” Mathis said.
Mathis said her family doesn’t need just one pack — they use multiple.
“She needs to have at least four or five to split between all the households, daycare, extracurricular activities that she was participating in,” Mathis said.
EpiPens also have an expiration date, which means they need to be replaced.
“We’re not talking about Tylenol, or ibuprofen, you’re talking about an EpiPen that you can’t just not have,” Mathis said.
For many people with allergies, they could experience a life threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis. They could have hives, redness on their skin, swelling of their lips and tongue, wheezing, and even trouble breathing.
But using the EpiPen in someone’s leg can help save a person’s life.
“Having an allergic reaction is scary, because everyday you live with a threat that your child might have something happen to them, and they might die over their allergy and it’s a very severe allergy at that,” Mathis said.
Lawmakers say they want to make the medication more affordable for families.
“This shouldn’t be an area where companies are making profits off of,” State Sen. Mike Halpin (D-Rock Island), one of the bill’s Senate sponsors, said. “This is life or death for little kids, as well as adults.”
A couple of years ago, the state passed legislation requiring insurance companies to cover the cost of EpiPens for people 18 or under.
“But it didn’t say affordable coverage for EpiPens and that’s where the General Assembly’s now having to go back and try to either define that or stipulate that with a specific dollar amount,” Garth Reynolds, the executive director of the Illinois Pharmacists Association, said.
A two-pack of name brand EpiPens can cost more than $600 and up to $300 for the generic version.

sean grayson, the man who murdered sonya massey in her own home after she called for help, was job hopping between law enforcement agencies
"State records obtained by WCIA show Grayson worked at six different law enforcement agencies since August of 2020. He worked less than one year at the Auburn Police Department, one year at the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, and then just over a year with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office."
im waiting for news of misconduct. we know its a problem where cops resign from their jobs to avoid charges/reports being officially filed

DUPAGE COUNTY, Ill. – On a recent call, the DuPage County NAACP president said he was absolutely stunned when one of his civil rights colleagues called migrants rapists and savages.
A county president for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is demanding the resignation of his state conference president on Tuesday.
Patrick Watson of the DuPage County says Teresa Haley of the Springfield branch should step down after stunning anti-migrant comments.
Watson says he recorded a Zoom call featuring Illinois NACCP branch presidents back in October.
“Black people have been on the streets forever and ever and nobody cares because they say that we’re drug addicts, we got mental health issues. But these immigrants have come over here, they’ve been raping people, they’ve been breaking into homes, they are like savages, as well.”
“Thinking of the rich history of the NAACP as an organization – it’s the oldest civil rights organization in the country and to have an Illinois state president engage in that type of rhetoric and that type of speech, I can’t imagine — I could have never imagined I would have heard that from a civil rights leader,” Watson said.
On Tuesday, Governor Pritzker condemned Haley’s comments.
“Reprehensible remarks. I would hope that she would apologize for the remarks. I also think that people should recognize that immigrants in this country are all around us,” Gov. Pritzker said.
Watson claims this is not the only time Haley has made offensive remarks. Although he does not have a recording, Watson says on another call Haley mocked the idea of people choosing the pronoun that fits them. “Someone on that call, she said, they wanted her to call them ‘they, them, it, what the hell is that?” Watson said.
Watson says he’s contacted the NAACP’s National Board and they’re looking into the matter.
WGN-TV reached out Teresa Haley for comment and we’ve not heard back. Nexstar’s WCIA-TV, reports Haley is traveling overseas.
Meanwhile, to make a point, Watson says he’s resigning form the DuPage County NAACP.
“We’ve had immigrants who’ve been shot at, we’ve had immigrants who’ve been killed. We have had people who have been beaten up because of their immigration status, and enough is enough, it’s time to stand up and say no to hate.”
Watson said he’s leaving because he can no longer be part of an organization with Haley as the state leader.

Get Woke, Go . . . Racist? Maybe we just have to finally recognize that the holier-than-thou DEI thing is mostly a scam to garner advantage for one group of people at the expense of another—and sometimes the mask slips.

People struggling with mental health issues could soon see another treatment option in Illinois.
A new bill would legalize “magic mushrooms,” for adult supervised use. Under the proposal, people would only be able to use the psychedelic drugs at a licensed service center. The FDA has considered the mushrooms a “breakthrough therapy” to help people with PTSD and depression who are resistant to other treatments.
Advocates, like Jean Lacy say if this becomes law it could be a big help. Lacy is the founder and Executive Director of the Illinois Psychedelic Society.
“People are really, at large they’re pretty desperate for new tools to help us with our mental health,” Lacy said. “I think collectively we’re all under a lot of stress, and that you know, I think there are serious consequences to continue to withhold these medicines form the people who need them.”
The bill’s sponsor says they’ve been working with law enforcement organizations on this proposal. She says the Illinois Sheriff’s Association is hesitant about the bill. If it becomes law, Illinois would be the third state to legalize magic mushrooms.
The proposal would not let people sell or have the drug the recreational use.
