Marisha truly shines with the Jackie Renoux archetype; there's a lot of it in both Beau and Patia, and even a little in Keyleth and Bunnie, and it's just like girl you gotta play a woman who's unbelievably competent but either arrogant or sort of annoying (positive) about it because every single incarnation of this slaps so hard.

So I'm actually watching vox machina for the first time in full (after researching the major story beats and reveals for my mighty nein watch knowledge and watching tlovm) and I already do not agree that any of vox machina would. immediately turn down laudna's resurrection even if they knew about delilah.
because cassandra looked them in the eye and said she was a briarwood and percy—soul still caught in a battle with the entity he sold it to for this very purpose, to end the briarwoods and take his revenge—was the one to stop grog from killing her. because vax took him aside one day and told him, if he lost control, if he put vex or any of the others in danger, he would kill him. and percy gave him his blessing.
because vex took percy's face in her hands as he was losing control, and calmly told him to take off his mask. because keyleth stood by percy's side and kept him straight, worried and argued and stressed and maintained the throughline of good that she knew exists in him. because percy trusted pike enough to ask her, genuinely, what he looked like. and because she saw his deal and cast no judgement and healed him.
even throwing aside the fact that they will see the familiar devastation in bells hells of losing a friend, throwing aside that particular brand of empathy...I think even more than that they understand the power of simply staying by someone's side in their darkness. they know first hand what keeping someone in the light takes, and I think they'll take one look at bells hells and know that they have what it takes to keep laudna safe.

Percy de Rolo and Keyleth of the Air Ashari my beloveds, my dearest companions, my comfort pair, nobody does it like them. They are the basis of what all friendships should be, they are the fucking blueprint, they show how meaningful profound affection in different forms other than romantic is, they are best friends, they are siblings, they are the platonic ideal of platonic ideals, they are soulmates, they have matching earrings, they are both massive nerds, they gift handmade jewellery to each other, they are the exact opposites, they are so similar, they are sunshine and shadow, they are nature and science, they are all the elements of the universe working together, they are creators, they are leaders afraid of their destinies, they care incredibly deeply about everybody around them, they are fuckups, they try to learn and grow, they argue, they fight, they hug and make up and never hold it against one another, they joke and drink and are always there for each other, they have died and been revived and brought each other back from the brink, they have met the gods themselves and still know that the connection between each other is worth more than divinity itself will ever be, they have fought monsters and titans and their greatest fears together and have come out the other side broken and battered but stronger for it, they are brother and sister, they are siblings-in-law, they are the epitome of chosen family on all possible levels, they will live through their lifetimes and legacies, they are love itself.

C1 Ep28 Vexleth moments:
When Keyleth does Sleet Storm to kill the birds, Vex encourages her and says she's badass when her eyes turn like storms. (Vex has a habit of saying Keyleth is a badass and shes right)

Good evening vex community, I have something for you. I'm thinking about convex au to the song "is it cold out?". Both Scar and Cub lost one of their eyes to make a deal with the Vex, but they have a third eye. But because Scar has played so much with the power of the Vex now, Vexes have started to take something else away from him, because now even the souls of the hermits he kills don't feed Vexes so well. (Yes, when Scar killed someone with a bow, he ate some part of this Hermit so the Vex powers are maintain) Scar uses powers more and more, exceeds the limit, which damages his body. That's why Vexes took something away. Cub will be the first to learn about it.
/I made a little description of this moment, maybe then I’ll turn it into a real fanfic/
Cub flies to Scar as soon as he feels the pain and dizziness in his head. He feels cold from all of Scarland. The harsh frost and blue light shine more and more from their pair of earrings. Cub's is looking for Scar, calling him again and again and yet he’s partner is silent until Scar heard Cub land behind him.
“Scar, are you okay? You didn't answer me when I called,” Cub walks closer, and Scar adjusts his dark glasses, despite the fact that it's already late evening and the stars are up in the sky. His face burns from the cold, from being afraid to touch it.
"Yes, of course I'm fine! I was just lost in my thoughts,” Scar's legs glow with a blue haze as he uses magic to stand. Cub hasn't seen his wheelchair in a very long time, goosebumps run up his spine, because he knows better than anyone that it’s forbidden to use this magic all the time.
"Scar, I feel something has changed in you, you know you can tell me everything, my friend"
"Yeah, Cub, thank you for that," Scar clenches his fists, and breathes through all of his chest, but the air just sizzles with its coldness and the bitterness of magic in lungs. "Then can I ask you something?"
"Sure, anything," Cub smiled a little as he tries to warm himself up and hopes that this smile will warm Scar too.
Scar reached for the black glasses with a trembling hand. Cub takes a step back and feels a pain in my back, as if needles are sewing patterns right on the vertebra. The white eyes "look" and do not see, and the second scar on the face burns blue.
"Cub, don’t you feel cold?"

The Twins in the Feywild
or, the adaptation is good, actually:
The thing about the Feywild arc in the Legend of Vox Machina is that it's not just a simple condensing of 20-ish hours into perhaps one hour; it's also at a notably different point in the story, and is changed to reflect that.
[as a sidebar: I am not tagging spoilers for Critical Role Campaign 1, as the episodes in question are 5+ years old. This post does have a large number of them, and in general, if you are new to CR and found this via the TLOVM tag, welcome! My blog will have spoilers for the campaign.]
In Campaign 1, after the Sunken Tomb and the encounter with Kamaljiori (who survives in the campaign, incidentally), all of Vox Machina heads towards Westruun. Grog has his (also different from TLOVM, also condensed in a thoughtful way that may be discussed in a separate post) struggles with Craven Edge, and they all encounter the Herd of Storms, deal with them, and kill Umbrasyl. The episode after they have killed the first of the four dragons responsible for the Conclave attacks, Umbrasyl the Hope Devourer, is aptly named Hope; they then go to Vasselheim where Vax formalizes his relationship to the Raven Queen, and then deal with Hotis back in Whitestone. The Deathwalker's Ward's flight power is also activated. Then they go to the Feywild, together (though Pike stays behind again due to Ashley's schedule.) In general, Vax has made peace with his decision, and the party is, for the most part, much more optimistic than they are here.
Here, all four dragons are still at large, Keyleth's spell was interrupted, Vax is still on edge, and the last thing they saw was Pike, impaled on Grog's sword. They are doing far worse.
So, understandably, Vax is in a sour mood the entire trip. This significantly changes his role, as he's less able to offer support for Vex. Keyleth is also more insecure.
The episode in Syngorn in the main campaign, which was also, notably, Critical Role's first ever live show with the tech hiccups and nerves that implies, is actually pretty funny. We do get the twins' encounter with Syldor - more on that later - but a large portion of the episode is dedicated towards stealing hats and trying to find a threshold crest for Garmelie (with Keyleth and Percy eventually outsmarting him on a technicality, in true Fey fashion); and the party accidentally implying and then fully leaning into implication that they are polyamorous and need a room so that they can have an orgy. I've seen indications that Syngorn was much grimmer than that; while the twins were understandably frustrated with it, it was far from a dark episode.
With the caveat that I have not read Kith and Kin, Syldor Vessar is one of the characters in Critical Role canon whom I feel the fandom has the most warped perception. He is a dick, to be clear; but on a scale of living character parents, he is treated with a vitriol the far worse Howaardt Darrington and Thoreau Lionett oddly dodge, and it says something that Tary and Beau never to our knowledge attempt to interact with their fathers again, whereas Vex maintains a distant and at times contentious but minimally cordial relationship with hers. (It's not unique for parents in this show to be given the madonna/whore treatment, as others have noted, and parents who fall most towards the middle of that false dichotomy tend to bear the brunt of it - see the Calloways and the Gentleman - but Syldor's treatment is, to be honest, inexplicable and weird.)
In "Heredity and Hats," Syldor is not warm or pleasant, but he does, in fact, apologize at length for his behavior and accepts that the twins have reason to hate him when he offers his assistance. (1x60, 47:58) He also accepts Percy's correction of Vex's title in full, and indeed, seems pleased by it (1x60, 55:22). He is not a good person, but he is, by the time the twins see him in the Feywild, a penitent one. And, in this episode, Vax is the one who is largely unconcerned with Syldor, with the implication he's already given up on him and doesn't particularly care, whereas Vex is much angrier.
However, that's all very difficult to convey in TLOVM in under ten minutes, when Vex's upcoming showdown with Saundor hinges on her insecurity surrounding how she was perceived in the past and her ongoing struggles with powerlessness. So in that, Syldor is far more dismissive, and Vax, who is still, as mentioned, in a very angry place himself, is, well, angry. It is a different tack! It also is a very smart choice given that in a campaign that lasts hundreds of hours, the rule is show don't tell; and in an animated series that must compress this into a tiny fraction of that time, that rule is lifted. This is not a time for the subtle background of Vex's C1 arc. There is no time for the subtle background of Vex's C1 arc. What matters is that the adaptation is consistent within itself; achieves the general, for lack of a better term, vibes and major plot beats of the original campaign; and can reach an audience unfamiliar with the source material. We can't make Syldor fascinatingly complex and Vax blasé here, so we don't, so that we can understand why Saundor is able to cut so close to the core of Vex before she's able to pull away.
It's different! And, yes, as someone who does like something very long-form and subtle and show-not-tell, I do prefer the original! I also think that within the limitations of an animated show with 6-hour seasons, with the assumption that the Feywild arc starts here (that is, with Vax still where he is emotionally, Umbrasyl alive, and Grog, Scanlan, and Pike absent), trying to otherwise keep things the same would feel artificial and unsatisfying, and fail to serve Vex's story. It is changed to heighten it in a medium that needs heightening because there's no time for breadth, and you can dislike it, but criticizing it for not being identical to the original is a particularly egregious missing of the point.
(It's also worth keeping in mind: have you rewatched this arc recently? Are you even comparing it to the story as it was, or are you comparing it to the story you remember, because, like it or not, Vex's story was always very much about her relationships to Syldor, Vax, and Percy, and her need to be liked; her flaw was that she simultaneously desperately needed people and hated herself for it.)

I'm still absolutely tickled by Taliesin Jaffe as Ashton Greymoor getting pissed off with and yelling at Taliesin Jaffe's former character Percy de Rolo.
Because it's so perfectly in character for both of them-- Percy IS a fucking asshole rich lord acting condescending by his own whim, and that is perfectly designed to piss off Ashton. Meanwhile Ashton literally has no idea the harm that could be done by bringing Delilah back and acting from shortsighted desperation and Percy is speaking from hard earned wisdom. But also I think the whole thing very much reflects Taliesin's feelings about Percy.
Also I love that both characters look at Vex and go "ah okay so you're the sensible one"

Thinking about how the twins grew up with nature as their playground, only to be dragged away to a city that was more of a prison than a home.
Thinking about, after nearly being broken by Syngorn, the twins flee for Byroden and find it gone.
Thinking about how Vex retreated into nature, finding comfort in a bear, while Vax became determined to make cities his as he robs them blind.
Thinking about how, over years of recovery, Vax fell for a druid who controls the elements while Vex falls for an inventor from a city.
Thinking about how Vex marries into royalty, has children and becomes a leader of a major city while Vax dies before his love can fully bloom into itself and he becomes a guardian of life and death who is heavily associated with snowdrops and ravens.

anyway my favourite thing about dead men fanfiction is the wildly different characters we all write. like. not even the ones who have been dead for years and have so little actual characterisation but even the ones who were alive in canon were probably very different one hundred, two hundred, three hundred years ago. also theyre under characterised in fiction. also we are all just having fun
#guy who barely posts about skulduggery pleasant: so ive be rereading some of my old favourite dead men fanfiction#as well as my own dead men fanfiction#and damn if we arent all writing a bunch of different fucking guys. to be fair i have gone rogue bcos like. cant be fucked w canon#dont wanna write about war#heyo what if it was pre war and everyone was still. convinced their wouldnt be one#also i love the idea of skulduggery being. just super fucking irresponsible devil may care live laugh love sorta guy pre-war#spoilt. rich parents who dont care much about him. loads of magic tutors.#i mean think about the class implications of the dead men#skulduggery. an elemental. a difficult discipline that clearly requires a level of training and scholarli-ness#his NAME is skulduggery#you come across that name if your educated. if you read a lot#this is a man who has been afforded every privilege#and like. i think a lot of sorcerers are implied to be very upper class#or like. kinda rich and fancy about it#but obviously that wouldnt be the case for everyone bcos magic isnt just genetic right like some ppl just show up with it#and like even then#dexter vex#anton shudder#like as far as im aware these are just names ppl have#and slightly uncommonly used words#disciplines which are more emotional/physical#as opposed to 'learned'#i just think its interesting#i was gonna have my dead men all meet n be friends pre war#but tbh i think them meeting and not being friends is better#i think theres a sort of tragedy in them being as close as they were because of the war#and not having that post war or pre war#its actually really fucking sad but like. evidently they didnt hang out in the interim when most of em were still alive#or at least that much#im wondering if like. they needed a couple hundred years of like. detox bcos seeing each other just pulled them back into that mindset
