Our sample size consisted of a total of 2651 responses. We did not set any sort of age restriction to take the survey, and no other qualification than self identifying yourself as part of the Undertale fandom.

The age group most represented is composed of people between 18 to 24 years old (also known as emerging adults), corresponding to 44% of all participants. They are followed by teenagers aged 13 to 17 years old (31%) and young adults aged 25 to 30 years old (15%)

In terms of gender, most people identified as female with a total of 43%, followed by nonbinary with 30% and male with 14%.  A significant amount of people responded with “Other,” explaining their identity (or questioning) more in depth.

Considering the great amount of LGBT+ representation present in Undertale, we decided to ask people whether they identify themselves as part of this community. The majority, 73%, has declared to be a part of it. It is relevant to add that 5% chose not to say, and 11% were questioning. It is possible that media containing well developed representation draws more people to it; many people said that the reason they liked certain characters was being able to feel represented as a minority.

The internet has made the game known all over the world, which motivated us to look into the way its fans are distributed around the globe. It is important to consider that since this survey is in English, people were more likely to respond to it if they understood the language, whether it is their native language or not (like Vessel #1, who’s writing this paragraph). It would be interesting if other communities did a similar exercise in the future by translating the survey. 

Having said that, we present the results. To get these numbers some of the answers were distributed into their corresponding existing group, and at least three new categories were created.

North America: 1788 votes 

Europe: 420 

Asia: 141 votes

South America: 94 votes

Australia: 83 votes

The most represented area is North America, which is no surprise considering it’s composed by a majority of native English speakers. It should also be noted that considering Toby Fox is from the US, it makes sense that people with a similar cultural background would more likely hear about Undertale and join the fandom. Europe follows with 420 votes, which could be due to their usage of the English language either as a native language or a frequently taught second one. Asia has a similar situation, however, if we take global population estimates (e.g: 141 per 4.561 billion in the case of Asia compared to Europe with 420 fans in an area with a population of around 746 million people), we can see that the density of Asian fans is drastically lower. After that we have both South America and Australia with a similar amount of votes. In those cases, knowledge of the English language may also factor into the density. Common social media used around the world could also be a factor but we do not have enough data to draw any conclusions.

92 people preferred not to specify and 50 people answered the survey with “Other”, giving their explanation. A few of these responses were put in bigger categories (Canada is in North America, for example). Besides them, the most notable group were Pacific Islanders, making up 11 people, 3 more than Africa. Due to their sizes, further investigation is needed to know if this is a replicable result or just the product of the places the survey was able to reach this time.

We asked about the exposure to the source material. After all, to be a fan of something, you should know about it. The biggest proportion of fans experienced Undertale for the first time in 2015 and 2016, with those two years amounting for more than half of our sample. As for people who have only started playing during this year, they represent 3% of all participants.

Many people are familiar with Deltarune as well. Most of them played the first chapter of the game as it was released in 2018, and other people followed in the next few years. Among the people that didn’t play, 253 manifested interest in playing in the future, while 77 stated they knew of the game’s existence but did not plan on playing it.

33% of responders found Undertale by watching someone play it online.  The next largest categories were those who were introduced by friends or saw fancontent first, comprising 22% and 20%, respectively.  These statistics are indicative of the love that fans have for Undertale: they want to share the game with others, whether by creating and sharing fancontent, or just by talking about the game positively enough to inspire others to give it a chance.  In the “other” category, many fans mentioned specific fanworks or AUs as their reasoning for giving Undertale a chance.  Other common answers in the “other” category were through the soundtrack, through memes, through connections to Homestuck, and through curiosity about the infamous fandom.  One humorous response that stuck out said, “I was searching for the word ‘sand’ and had wrote ‘sans’ by wrong.”

I got over 300 responses, which was A LOT to sort through for the short responses, but I’ve gathered all the “data” and here it is! Our patreon is more than a year old and we decided to tell you a little more about what it is, why it can be needed, what you can see and get there, and Everything.

What's it?

Patreon is a site where you can get access to a closed blog for a small donation. In some ways. The one who pays this donation is called a patron. Different types of donations are called tiers.

As of now, we have 50 patrons, 83 articles, and the following geography of visits

History

The thorny path began when we still had a little number or patrons, we made a personal gift to everyone, every month. There were sketches based on photos in our style, and Christmas' chibi, and characters in the style of great artists, and something else.

But from a certain point on, it became too time-consuming, so we moved from personal gifts to one monthly art. We offered several topics and all the characters to choose from. So every month there was a certain randomness.

But even this did not completely satisfy us. Therefore, we came up with a way to make sure that our patrons directly affect the game and thanks to their help, new content appears in the game. And we did not waste time on something that will not be included in the release as a result.

What is there?

So, we have come to the current form and schedule of posts, which we try to adhere to:

~5th <wtf>date of the month </wtf>— we post a monthly art and launch a survey for the next one

~15th date of the month — post-surprise, and also here the voting for the monthly art ends and we announce the results

~25th date of the month — post about BTS

Monthly art

Having compiled a list of arts for the game, we have divided them into 2 large groups: those that must be in the game. And those that we would like to see in the game. So we give our patrons a choice from the second list.

As mentioned above: voting starts at the beginning of the month, ends in the middle, and the art itself appears at the beginning of the next month at the same time as the next vote.

Here is an example of such a survey, in which, by the way, 1st option won. It has already been drawn and the patrons have already seen it :P

100. Kool - BENEE

One of the many gems from ‘Hey u x’. Unlucky to hear her biggest hit so early on.

99. Itch - Hockey Dad

I thought ‘Brain Candy’ was a little bit of a disappointment, but Itch was one of the strongest tracks they duo have released.

98. Your Man - Joji

Surprised to hear this track in the countdown. Pretty solid tune though

97. Audacity (feat. Headie One) - Stormzy

He’s still one of the best from the UK rap scene and this track shows why.

96. Germaphobe - Hockey Dad

One of the weaker tracks, I thought, off Brain Candy, but not surprised a lot of Hockey Dad fans liked this one. Definitely plays into their audience’s taste.

95. Loose Ends (feat. G Flip) - Illy

I do not like Aussie Hip Pop. This track is not an exception.

94. Rain (feat. Tay Keith) - Aitch and AJ Tracey

The piano in this is very ‘Humble’ - Kendrick Lamar. Still a banger though.

I cannot wait for the new Jungle Giants album. They’ve gotten better and better with each release.

I fell deeply in love with this song the second I heard it. It just has this quiet yet strong emotion behind it. The production on it is something else as well.

A really solid debut single by the Unearthed High winners. Can’t wait to hear more from them. 

86. Laugh Now Cry Now (feat. Lil Durk) - Drake

I still don’t get the hype for Drake. The falsetto “baby” in the chorus also never ceases to make me laugh.

85. Too Tough Terry - Dune Rats

Dunies slow descent from mature stoner pop to edgy tracks for teens has been hard to watch. This song just seems like a parody of the band. 

84. Chicken Tenders - Dominic Fike

Has to be the sexiest song about the best thing in the frozen food section at the supermarket. Pity the album didn’t live up to the hype.

83. Down For You - Cosmo’s Midnight and Ruel

I was really keen for this once I heard about the collaboration between the two. Unfortunately it felt a little too much like a Ruel song and it doesn’t really feel like Cosmo’s Midnight had much of a touch on it.

82. The Clap - The Chats

It’s a bit generic for The Chats but I just like hearing them get more popular. Just hilarious dudes. 

81. Weightless - Spacey Jane

One of the stronger and more unique tracks on Sunlight. The synth touches really suit the band.

80. Freaks - FISHER

Cannot wait for FISHER to just slowly fade away. His tracks all sound the same and are so basic. 

79. my future - Billie Eilish

One of the best tracks Eilish has released. Love how this just turns halfway through from a really soft ballad to a bit of an electro pop song.

78. Lady Marmalade - G Flip

It’s a nice cover. The video of G Flip performing it though is really fun.

77. House Arrest - Sofi Tukker and Gorgon City

This song bangs pretty hard. I like a lot of Sofi Tukker have really been putting out some solid stuff.

76. Baby It’s You - London Grammar

This is a great track, that synth in the chorus is heavenly.

I do like this song but it reminds me of a track from the 80s or 90s and I can’t put my finger on what that track is.

When I first heard this I thought Ladyhawke was back in the mainstream. Little disappointed it wasn’t, but this slaps.

Possibly the best chorus of the year. Owusu has stepped up massively in the Australian Hip Hop scene. 

72. Way Down - Ocean Alley

Ocean Alley have plateaued. ‘Lonely Diamond’ just felt like the band had become comfortable. 

71. Obey - Bring Me The Horizon and YUNGBLUD

I just can’t take BMTH seriously anymore. They’re music has become so comically edgy.

70. Low - Chet Faker

Hey look, Nick Murphy has become Chet Faker again. Don’t know why he changes between the two when one is just slightly more soulful than the other, but he does release nice tunes.

69. Second - Hope D

I do like this female, Aussie version of Jamie T. It’s a really nice track. Also the number 69 is claimed by Hope D. haha.

68. Lie to Me - Vera Blue

I don’t know what it is exactly, but there’s something about Vera which just puts her on a different level than her counterparts. She’s just that consistently good.

67. Boss Bitch - Doja Cat

This track doesn’t get old for me. It’s so much fun, and Doja Cat owns it. Love it.

66. Fantasising - Skegss

This track really does have a very “Three Leaf Clover” vibe. I have enjoyed Skegss in the past but their new stuff hasn’t captured my attention really. Seems a bit run of the mill. 

65. C’MON (feat. Travis Barker) - Amy Shark

I actually don’t mind this song, but why does it feature Travis Barker. It’s a piano ballad featuring a punk drummer, and he really doesn’t do that much. I’m confused, was he jealous of Mark Hoppus?

64. Soak Me In Bleach - The Amity Affliction

The song title reflects my thoughts when I hear that The Amity Affliction have released a new one. There are so many better Aussie metal bands out there.

63. Day & Age - Ball Park Music

BPM have a knack for writing amazing ballads. I wasn’t huge on their latest album, but tracks like this continue me having them in my good books. 

62. Run - Joji

One of the best tracks Joji has released. A really mature song for the artist and a step in the right direction for him. 

61. Pretty Grim - Ruby Fields

Ruby is good, but I feel she’s starting to release the same song over and over. Need something fresh.

60. Go (feat. Juice WRLD) - The Kid LAROI

Probably the strongest track by The Kid LAROI, but Juice WRLD outshines him just due to his vocal tone. He just sounds better.

59. Gimme Love - Joji

And that’s three for Joji. I really like how this song has two distinct sections and both are solid without overshadowing the other. 

58. Fly Away - Tones and I

I still don’t get why Tones and I puts on that fake accent in her songs. It just detracts from what could be a nice pop song.

57. Sobercoaster - Beddy Rays

Really didn’t expect this to get so high. I’m happy though because it’s a really fun song.

56. On The Line - San Cisco

Tracks like this keep me invested in San Cisco. They can really release some brilliant stuff.

55. I Think You’re Great - Alex The Astronaut

The fine line between overly chessy and adorably optimistic is what Alex walks on with every track. I think this falls on the former side sadly. 

54. Blue - Eiffel 65 (Flume Remix)

The fact that Flume puts so much of his identity into this remix is why Flume has been one of the most successful Aussie acts this past decade. 

53. In Your Eyes - The Weeknd

If The Weeknd release ‘Blinding Lights’ a month later I’d believe that he would take out this countdown. He didn’t though and instead we are left with this solid track in the bottom 50.

52. The Glow - DMA’s

Why? Why did DMA’s have to get so poppy and generic. I loved their first two album, but I struggled to get through the third.

51. Your Love (Déjà Vu) - Glass Animals

Out of the three big hits the band had in 2020, this is the most underrated. There is so much going on here, yet it never feels muddled. Wavey Davey on fire here.

50. Nothing To Love About Love - Peking Duk and The Wombats

Although this is a nice song, there’s been so many 80s electro pop throwbacks recently that have been done better that this collab just fades into the background.

49. Wishing Well - Juice WRLD

This song is so beautiful and heart-breaking. Really shows why Juice WRLD became such a beloved artist so quickly.

48. Ain’t It Different (feat. AJ Tracey and Stormzy) - Headie One

This is a really cool collab. They use the Red Hot Chili Peppers sample so well and really flow so well with it that it feels almost effortless.

47. Animals - Architects

I like a lot about this track, but the chorus really hits another level. Feels cathartic to scream along to.

46. Pretty Lady - Tash Sultana

Was hoping Tash would move into a more psychedelic direction with their newer stuff, but this is still a fine track.

A pretty by the books Ruel song, but he really does this style so well.

44. You & I - G Flip

Probably G Flips strongest release this year. The chorus has a lot of flavour.

43. together - Ziggy Alberts

Generic acoustic track by generic Byron Bay artist. He really took the cake this year for dumbest comparison, when he compared wearing a face mask to the holocaust. Thought he’d suffer a bit for it, but apparently his fanbase grew stronger.

42. WHATS POPPIN - Jack Harlow

Jack Harlow is just so much fun. He’s killing it, and WHATS POPPIN is proof of that. Keep the bangers coming Harlow.

41. I Still Dream About You - The Smith Street Band

I felt I was growing out of The Smith Street Band, their newer music just not resonating to me. Then they drop this and make me a big fan again.

40. Come & Go (with Marshmello) - Juice WRLD

Just that chorus. It is so enjoyable. He really was going places.

A back to back, and from one of the more exciting songs on the album we get to one of the more sombre tracks. Everything from the guitar, the vocals, those synth notes. . . this track is just a perfect send off for the artist. R.I.P. Juice.

38. Parasite Eve - Bring Me The Horizon

This song is so unironically cringe and edgy that it somehow becomes ironically fun. It does the full circle.

37. SO DONE - The Kid LAROI

I do like The Kid LAROI, but his vocals on this, combined with the lyrics, just make him sound like a child chucking a temper tantrum. It does make me laugh though.

36. forget me too (feat. Halsey) - Machine Gun Kelly

If this song was released in the early 00s (where it belongs), it would’ve faded into oblivion. At least Halsey sounds pretty solid on her verse though.

35. Running Red Lights (feat. Rivers Cuomo & Pink Siifu) - The Avalanches*

My personal number one for the year. This song has that melancholic, nostalgic feel to it that just hits home every time. Also one of Cuomo’s strongest vocal performances.

34. Everybody Rise - Amy Shark

This song is fine. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to it, but it’s fun to sing-a-long to. 

33. Breathe Deeper - Tame Impala

One of the best tracks from The Slow Rush. I love that piano motif throughout, and the bass is so funky. That weird bridge section towards the end is also pretty slick.

32. Criminals - DMA’s

The real criminals are the ones who told DMA’s this was a good idea. I just can’t get around their new stuff. I miss ‘Hill’s End’ and ‘For Now’.

31. Reasons - San Cisco

Tracks like this keep me from becoming a full time fan of San Cisco. They can really release some average stuff.

30. Bagi-la-m Bargan (feat. Fred Leone) - Birdz

Powerful. Birdz really took it to another level here.

29. Dribble - Sycco

Although I find there’s a lot of similar stuff out there, I think Sycco does sound like an original voice in the Australian music scene. She’s killing it.

28. Straightfaced - Spacey Jane

Although there was a lot of good stuff on Spacey Jane’s debut album, I found it to be quite repetitive. This track was one of the ones that I found to fade into the background instead of standing out. 

27. Under the Thunder - Skegss

I really want to like Skegss, they’ve released some great tunes in the past. But this just doesn’t do it for me. It’s just boring. 

26. No Plans To Make Plans - Lime Cordiale

Everything that makes new The Rubens tracks so average is presented here on a Lime Cordiale track. Obnoxiously quirky.

25. Reality Check Please - Lime Cordiale

Hey back to back Lime Cordiale tracks. And another one of their weaker ones. ‘Addicted to the Sunshine’ did this chorus better.

24. Blue World - Mac Miller

Didn’t expect this to make it so high but so well deserved. This song slaps hard but still continues the tragic story that is presented on his posthumous album ‘Circles’.

23. Good News - Mac Miller*

Back to back Mac! To be honest, I am close to tears every time this track plays. If only the lyrics “there's a whole lot more for me waiting/I know maybe I'm too late, I could make it there some other time/Then I'll finally discover/That it ain't that bad” were told to Mac before his passing, because he did have so much more to offer. R.I.P. Mac.

22. Complicated - Eves Karydas

This song is so good. I’ve heard it that many times but it still hasn’t lost its shine. So damn good.

21. Energy - KLP and Stace Cadet

I was really hoping this would crack top 20. Probably the best Dance track of the year. Such a jam.

20. Addicted To The Sunshine - Lime Cordiale

Despite thinking that ‘14 Steps To A Better Living’ didn’t have many new tracks that were that good on it, this one is nice. It’s just a pleasantly nice song.

19. You Should Be Sad - Halsey

I really don’t like Pop Country music but I also find it hilarious that the genre cracked the top 20. ‘09 Taylor Swift would be proud.

18. Tangerine - Glass Animals

With Tik Tok exploding in 2020 I don’t get how this didn’t get adopted by someone on it. It’s so primed to get hyped on it. 

17. Is It True - Tame Impala

I think Kevin Parker’s vocals on this are underwhelming, but that might just be because the instrumental slaps that hard. The rhythm section is so tight.

16. Screw Loose - Lime Cordiale

This sound is what Lime Cordiale do best. We need more dub influence and less elevator pop influence.

15. Skin - Spacey Jane

No matter what you think about Spacey Jane, they sure do make some emotional tracks. One of the most powerful songs on Sunlight.

14. Tombstone - Ocean Alley

The verses are average and pretty bland but the chorus is amazing. Just don’t think the album resonated with me too much, and Tombstone is another mixed track off it.

13. Rockstar - Mallrat

Possibly Mallrat’s best song yet. Her laid back, relaxed style mixed with the low-fi production really meshes well.

12. Get on the Beers (feat. Dan Andrews) - Mashd N Kutcher 

I’m not going to pretend this is my style, but the way this has resonated with Australians during lockdown last year makes the track way smarter than it deserves to be. It’s both ironically and unironically good.

11. On Our Own - Lime Cordiale

I’m happy the three best new tracks of Lime Cordiale’s debut were the highest placing in this countdown. This really is a nice song.

10. Therefore I Am - Billie Eilish

Not my favourite songs from Billie but she continues to be consistently good. The production on this is immense as well.

9. I’m Good? - Hilltop Hoods

I wish old school Hilltop could hear this so could prevent themselves every going this direction. Aussie Hip Pop is not a good genre. This is one of their worst tracks yet.

8. Sending Me Ur Loving - The Jungle Giants*

This song has so much flavour too it. It’s so funky and fun and the production is so tight. Also the guitar work is underrated here, not doing much but adding that icing on the cake.

7. Hyperfine - G Flip

Every time I hear this track (and I’ve heard it a lot) I completely forget about it a couple minutes later. G Flip is good, but this is forgettable.

6. WAP (feat. Megan Thee Stallion) - Cardi B

I understand if this isn’t your style, but I love it. I don’t think there’s ever been a song with so many quotable moments. Every line makes a statement that will get in your head. My personal favourite? “ I let him taste it, now he diabetic”.

5. Lost In Yesterday - Tame Impala

There’s a lot of songs on ‘The Slow Rush’ I like, but Lost In Yesterday I’ve always found kinda boring. It feels a little uninspired. Surprised that this was the album’s big hit.

4. Cherub - Ball Park Music*

BPM have released some great music over the decade but I think this is their best yet. It’s beautiful, emotional and has a fantastic, cathartic breakdown at the end. I love a good build up. 

3. The Difference (feat. Toro y Moi) - Flume*

Everything about this track is why Flume has been so great for so long. This track is great for any situation. If I’m partying, I play it. If I’m relaxing, I play it. If I’m getting pumped up, I play it. If I’m sad, I play it. Flexibility matters.

2. Booster Seat - Spacey Jane

OHHH-OH-OHHHHHHHH AND IT FEELS LIKE THAT AGAIN! One of the best sing-a-long tracks of the year, yet massively emotional. Like damn this song is rough.

1. Heat Waves - Glass Animals*

If I had one word to express how I feel about this winning I would say “deserved”. Not many tracks were as perfect for 2020 as this one. Glass Animals love writing absolute bangers with emotional cores and this one is one of their strongest tracks. Glass Animals just continue to outdo themselves.

I know, I know, my next one isn’t quite wrapped up yet, buttttt this idea came to me when my cousin and I were taking a walk down a ridiculous part of Memory Lane and I got excited. I’m guessing this has been done before at some point -- that’s not stopping me from presenting to you: 

I love fluff. And I wanna see more of it! 

Below the cut you will find some prompts that, in the context of Twilight, are absolutely cringe-worthy. My challenge to you is to take that prompt and make it something we can love. 

Disclaimer: I’m not Twilight-shaming ANYONE. I literally sat and watched all of Eclipse and now want to watch both Breaking Dawns. It’s more about sentiment, and the occasional girly giggle for me, but ... yeah. No judgement here, friends.

New Look Sabres: GM 66 - EDM - Numbers

Perhaps this game represents the Sabres season; at least from a standings point of view this game last night was what being a Sabres fan has felt like this season. Favorable numbers toward the start followed by an ugly decline that turns the math against you. The simplest stat in hockey is goals. In this game last night Buffalo had more of those up until the dying minutes of the second period. It ended 4-3 Edmonton. I went into this game giving some good thought to the Phil Housley criticism. I thought: You know what, this guy is in his first NHL coaching job and in spite of it being his job, you could say he still is wrapping his head around what he’s got. I was feeling very generous having those thoughts and if the game didn’t kill the good will I was trying to foster for Housley then his postgame comments did. He said his team played 55 minutes of great hockey. The other 5 were bad minutes. That would be a nice piece of analysis with a team that consistently plays well and beats the teams they should. This team does not, and that comment is stupid. The numbers that do not represent time are against those comments. Jack Eichel scored two goals in a loss. Linus Ullmark was hung out to dry as his defense let up the greater number of high danger shots. The Oilers outplayed the Sabres in every statistical category except the powerplay and shots on goal. You had me fooled, Phil! I was sitting happy halfway through this game looking at the next four to five games being winnable! Boy, am I fool! The numbers are clear. After having an 83% chance of making the playoffs at the start of December, the Sabres are now nine points out at the start of March having gone 34 games without back to back wins! The 2014-2015 Tank team that was designed to lose and drove me to watch the Rangers most of that season, that team only got as bad as 31 games in that category. This ain’t it, Phil. I don’t know who I want to replace him in any intelligent way but when he’s back behind the bench for the home opener in October I am will not be a happy camper about it. This game was the microcosm of this season and oh so appropriately that microcosm ends in a loss.

The game starts off with an unlucky shorthanded goal against when Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl teamed up for the latter’s 41st goal of the season. Edmonton maybe wasting Connor McDavid and will likely miss the playoffs this season but there are guys tearing it up there in spite of it all. I hate that Buffalo and Edmonton are still comparable in this way because on the very same powerplay Jack Eichel revives the home crowd with a tight net-front goal to draw the score even again at 1. If there is one big positive for the Sabres in this game it was a full display of Jack Eichel’s leadership. The rest of this first period is a vision of what we thought the Sabres would be in 2019 in 2015. Jack Eichel helping Montour get a great chance. Okposo getting a great chance. Sheary knocking at the door. Jeff Skinner was chopping at that net like a lumberjack because he wants to get Rocket Rickard trophy votes. Casey Mittelstadt broke through Mikko Koskinen with a point-blank blast at 13:19 into the first period. The primary assist on that was Scott Wilson who, only now gets his first NHL point of the season having missed the majority of it with a gruesome ankle injury sustained way back in Training Camp. The fun only continued when Jack Eichel made it 3-1 unassisted in a no-look smacker that earned his team a standing applause as they went to the locker room for the first intermission! The likes of Jeff Skinner, Rasmus Ristolainen and Evan Rodrigues all shined bright with beautiful chances in the second period too. While the pushback came in the second that lead remained into the second half of the middle frame and I began to foolishly let myself hope looking at the schedule. Oh what a fool I am.

Less than four minutes left in the second period the whole Sabres defense was caught puck watching when Zack Kassian got a McDavid assist on a one-timer snipe that made Ullmark look confused. It’s now 3-2 Oilers and the floodgates are opened. A puck squirted out of a battle on the wall to Darnell Nurse who wired it home for the equalizer. Credit where credit is due, Jeff Skinner starts taking shots from Ovi spots to try and get the lead back, but the Oiler kept pushing. Give me an intermission, PLEASE! The horn to end the period did not come soon enough and with a mere five seconds left in the second period Adam Larsson takes a shot on net from way out that trickles in past Ullmark. Evidently Kyle Brodziak tipped it in, and I have not seen Ullmark angrier than after that goal. Some folks I heard wanted a challenge for a kicking motion by Brodziak but gee, I just don’t have the energy to litigate shit like that when the Sabres are this bad. Boos came down and Carter Hutton replaced Ullmark in net for the third. A one goal deficit never looked so demoralizing for a team and the Sabres never looked like they were going to come back. Sure, like many times this season its been encouraging to just see the Sabres have legitimate rushes in on net; hell, Brandon Montour is worth the price just for his ability to pass the puck to the offense if nothing else. In spite of Jeff Skinner not getting the puck across the line behind the Edmonton netminder and Jason Pominville blocking his own tap in (?) the threat of a Sabres equalizer just never seemed real. It ended 4-3 Oil.

I legitimately had a moment last night where I sat down to write this reaction and for the first time this season doing that I just couldn’t. My wife and I were having a good night and I just said no for my own mental health. With 16 games left in this season the Sabres need to go 14-2 to legitimately have a chance to make the playoffs. Pardon my French: What the Fuck? I had to talk myself out of buying a Skinner jersey that probably wouldn’t fit me at this time in December we were all so into this team. They were gold at that point, the best team we’d seen since before the Harbor Center was built! Now I would rather watch MLS Review videos and blog about a soccer team that isn’t even playing this calendar year than watch this team take on clubs they should be beating by multiple goals! WHAT THE FUCK! So, let’s turn away from the frustrating team stats for the far less frustrating individual stats.  Jeff Skinner sits at 36 goals 9 back of goal leader Alex Ovechkin. He probably doesn’t have the most goals by the end of this season but if he can get north of 40 and push near 50 in these last several games its going to do a lot for how we feel going into next season when he’s inevitable signs. He should get some MVP votes. Jack Eichel sits at 25 goals. He needs to reach 30. I say that because this season has been such an encouraging step forward for him that hitting the 30-goal mark needs to happen as a bookmark if nothing else. Casey Mittelstadt just hit 10 goals and sits at 21 points with his 11 assists. He’s probably not quite the Calder Trophy contender we thought he could be but that’s ok because he’ll be a great C2 real soon. His fellow rookie Rasmus Dahlin on the other hand should get the majority of the Calder Trophy votes in my bias opinion. Dahlin has more points than all but one rookie forward has. The lone guy ahead of him in that category, Elias Petterson, has cooled off a fair bit from the first part of the season in which he was destroying worlds with his goals. What Dahlin has done puts him in an elite company among rookie D-Men in this league already and that’s more special than anything Petterson has done. Rasmus Dahlin for Calder!

I hate pushing hard for individual awards because it feels so dirty against not making the playoffs. Then again, I still feel cheated that Artemi Panarin came in out of nowhere and stole it from Jack Eichel in 2016. Those however are the things I’ll cheer for to avoid the crushing gloom of what a missed opportunity season this has become. That and I eagerly await exit interviews to see how Jason Botterill and Phil Housley envision next season. There is an outside chance that changes Botts’ opinion of Housley prompting a coaching change, but the more likely and interesting outcome is the two of them hammering out a plan of Playoffs or bust. Their comments have grown a little bit conflicting in these late phases of the season in spite of that vote of confidence a couple weeks back. All this and the Amerks will go on a run. How many times have I mentioned that? Not enough, one more time: the Rochester Americans are going to probably win the division and make a deep playoff run. The end of this Sabres season, for how disappointing the lack of a playoff berth will be, will be very interesting in terms of Front Office Palace intrigue. There will be a new Will for the playoffs in 2020 at that point and how this organization fixes to get there will be fun to watch. For now, we eagerly anticipate Jeff boy. Come on, Skin man, sign on the line!

P.S. Columbus is my favorite non-Sabres Eastern Conference team to watch going into these last 15 games. They pushed all the chips in on a run this post-season and its not even for sure they make the playoffs right now.

What Dems would run for President if Biden did not and who would have a good shot?

Lets take a look at the list.

Candidate, Age in 2024

Kamala Harris, 58 -  One would think that being Vice President would make one more Presidential.  It’s very questionable if that has occurred. She seems to be the Democratic version of Dan Quayle. On the campaign trail in 2020 she consistently failed to excite the voting public.  Her one moment of success was raking Joe Biden over the coals about his policies in the early 1980′s that applied specifically to her as a young child. That moment of success shot her up to poll at 18% and gave her a ton of big Donor money.  By time the Primaries rolled around Harris had disinterested her voters and was polling at 3%. In real terms she is a black candidate black people don’t really like.  She frankly seems self centered and puts out a “very full of herself” vibe.  She COULD learn and improve, but for now the highest I can rate her is “Unlikely”.

Bernie Sanders, 83 - Look, I know Bernie fans love the man, but age is a HUGE part of why Democrats (56-58%) and Independents (66%) hope Joe Biden won’t run again when he is 81.  Bernie is older than Biden or Donald Trump (78 in 2024).   There is a pretty good chance Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (46 in 2024) will be the candidate barring him facing kidnapping charges over his publicity stunt of misleading illegal immigrants into flying to another state under the promise of work.  Is 83 year old Bernie going to keep pace with DeSantis’ fresh batch of regular Trump-level nonsense?  Will he be able to keep up with that dog and pony show?  Will he be able to handle the strain of campaigning?  The answer to all of those questions seems to be “Unlikely”.  That will leave the “Obama track”,  the large number of socially liberal independents capable of challenging the voting numbers of the Democratic core, up for grabs.

Michael Bloomberg, 80 - Bloomberg’s career as a Democratic Presidential Candidate appears to have been strangled to death on the stage in Nevada by Elizabeth Warren.  He has winning attributes, but Democrats will not get behind a guy who has innumerable non-disclosure contracts out there with women he offended.  Plus the Democratic party is TIRED of Clinton era leaders. His moment as a DNC candidate has passed....Now that said, if he chose to change parties and run as a republican, I think he could earn the presidency.  But as a Dem?  No.

Elizabeth Warren, 73 - The Nevada Debate Strangler. When she isn’t ending political dreams, she is following her own horrible political instincts. Her moment was the 2016 election but she instead chose to be a Hillary Clinton fan girl as the fierce drumbeat of Now POUNDED on her door for over a year. Does she have another run in her?  Probably.  Could she be a valid contender....Tougher to say.  The mood in both parties is for new younger blood. That is especially so for the Dems. Warren would need to start building alliances with younger Dems rather than hanging out with the Hillary crowd as they descend into nursing homes and dementia.  That’s really blunt and not very PC, but maybe Warren might read this and realize that she is wasting Presidential level talent.  Her best approach would likely to be guaranteeing a codification of Roe v. Wade into federal law if elected.  She among most of the female candidates seems able to take an ownership position over that, the most important issue to democratic voters.  Unlikely today, but with a ton of potential to correct.

Jay Inslee, 71 - Jay Inslee does intermittently give off a very presidential vibe, but given the mood of today’s dem he is probably too much of an “old white guy” candidate to secure the nomination.  Unlikely.

Beto O’Rourke- 50 - Now that is an interesting name.  O’Rourke has lost a high profile race for a Senate slot to Ted Cruz and just lost the Governor’s race in a less contested manner.  There is a perception that his star has faded and is going out, but is that really what we have seen?  I live in Texas and to my perception O’Rourke lost BOTH races because he inexplicably took a hard line position against guns....Like a New York position on guns.  He is very capable of charming a group of voters. And these losses and his disappointing presidential run where he appeared to lack insight are potentially great opportunities for personal growth.  The man is white Obama.  He has an Obama like positivity and is a very strong orator.  But like Obama, Beto is very very light on substance beyond being rabidly anti-gun.  If Beto O’Rourke had for example some of Andrew Yang’s policy positions, that would be a hard candidate to ignore.  The youth vote always gravitates to new positions that the core doesn’t trust.  He is a candidate who can capture the youth vote.  I am going to say this because I want this blog to continuously be very blunt....A wiser Beto in a narrower field could be like a straight Mayor Pete. O’Rourke’s challenge would be winning the nomination, not the election.  His campaigns have always excelled at registering new Democratic voters at a very high rate.  That is a good horse to ride should he get that far.  Possibly.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttieg, 40 - “Mayor Pete” is a very talented speaker with a lot of admirable political skills.  He is a brilliant performer, but there are moments when the window cracks open and you see a cutthroat bastard.  He OBVIOUSLY way overperformed in 2020, but that was entirely because of the alabaster white states that lead into the nomination processes.  Once the color of the states turned tan, Pete was done.  He has issues in his past that will prevent Black Democratic voters from embracing him and he seems to have little talent for courting Hispanic voters to offset that.  But he is a sharp guy who used his run in 2020 to buy his way out of his political dead end job as a mayor in a red state.  He could easily learn Spanish and apply his Leonard Zelig-like skillset to suddenly become beloved by that community as well.  He cleverly realized his campaign was running exclusively off his hypnotic rhetoric and no platforms of substance, so he plagiarized Andrew Yang’s platforms in an effort to stave off his fall.  He is very much the kind of “for sale to the highest bidder” Democratic candidate the DNC loves.  He is clearly being groomed by rich donors and party insiders for another race.  While he could again be somewhat relevant in the campaign, I think the view of him by black voters (who frankly are generally out on gay candidates anyway) is likely to prevent him from ever earning the nomination. Additionally I expect a very similar candidate to run in Colorado Governor Jared Polis.  Unlikely.

Governor Jared Polis, 49 - Polis is the only openly gay Governor in US history.  He is a successful businessman and he seems to have presidential asperations.  While probably not as polished as Mayor Pete, I think there is a lot more earnestness there. I think the positives run out about there. I don’t think he has done enough as Governor of Colorado to climb out of the faceless contender field. Unlikely. 

Andrew Yang, 47 - Another Successful Businessman. He is young and vibrant.  Yang frankly grossly underperformed in the 2020 election and in retrospect probably let it get to him and got out of the race a state too soon.  Since then he ran for Mayor of New York City before realizing it was a lot of work. He was ill-suited for that position and seemed to realize it halfway through the campaign. He has walked out on the DNC and formed some weird pseudo party.  He has a disarming smile that screams ‘buddy you play basketball with”.  Yang is capable of alternating between presidential and totally approachable.  He seems honestly kind and his platforms are unique and thoughtful.  Yang had something like 105 well thought out items on his site from platforms like his very expertly conceived  and fully funded Freedom Dividend that would replace unemployment and awarded every citizen $1000 a month funded by taxes on companies like Amazon to allow every citizen to pursue greater happiness with less stress in their lives --- to getting rid of the penny, a surprisingly sound proposition that would save the country money.  But Yang came across as a game show host at times with his overcommittment to the Freedom Dividend.  Really at this point he has created a ton of debris in the way of him earning the Democratic nomination, but his strength with Independents and with much of the Bernie Crowd would make him a likely winner if he did win the nomination. He should be a possibly, but with all the baggage he is carrying, “Unlikely”.

Julian Castro,48 - He wants to be President yesterday, but lacks the intelligence to see the obvious pathway to that goal(An odd criticism for one with his collegiate background.) ....Or he is too lazy to pursue it... Or too arrogant... Or all of the above.  Has an inability to connect with the public at a presidential candidate level. I hate to pick at this, but he has a disturbing “joker-like” smile. Picks stupid issues to fight with other candidates over in debates ala Mayor Pete.  With only Nevada having a significant Hispanic population among the 2024 pre-Super Tuesday contests and Castro’s inability to charm anyone outside of his native ethnic group, Castro is another hard “No”.  He should really park his ego at the Door and run for Texas Governor.  He would win and that would open the door for a more mature Castro to win the presidency down the road.

Marianne Williamson, 70 - Williamson is weird as hell, but not hopeless.  Her campaign issues are fixable with training.  She talks around points far, Far too much, but she did reach a surprising number of people.  Honestly, I felt she was spewing unstructured babble, but after debates I talked to a lot of people who thought she was weird, but that she did make some sound points.  I am going to put her down as “Unlikely.”

Corey Booker, 53 - Sort of a hybrid of Mayor Pete and Julian Castro.  He is polished, but there is no sense of empathy that a candidate like Beto O’Rourke has in spades.  He isn’t nearly as artful of a speech maker as the brilliant Mayor Pete.  He is another young politician who picks fights on the wrong issues in debates.  He’s kind of full of shit.  He’s the kind of Politician who cries in a speech because it tests well.  One gets the feeling that if Booker ever does become president it will be because some white Democratic nominee will make Booker his vice President to solve their own “black problem” and Booker can ride those coattails into the white house.  The trouble is that scenario is much less likely with the new primary schedule.  He is a very capable politician...I just don’t see the right instincts to win on the campaign trail without a sizable head start. “No”.

Reverend Raphael Warnock, 55 - As the recipient of over 100 text messages begging for cash, I am not a fan. Warnock seems like a strange relic to me.  The black preacher who on the surface is fighting a race war but inside is chasing money and power...at least that is my impression.  I personally feel like he offers nothing to non-black voters.  After a phone worth of messages all I know is that he started with nothing and now he is a well dressed priest with political power --- “send me money”.  His advocates admire his ability to raise money and think that makes him a contender, but they fail to compute in that the man has been in two runoff elections with the fate of the Senate in the balance. There is no precedence for America electing a religious leader...especially on the democratic side. He will be seen as a risky choice by non-black voters when he inevitably runs for president.   He would probably do better than most “failed” black candidates because as a preacher he will pick up additional black female votes that other black male candidates might not.  This makes him the worst kind of Democratic Candidate...the one likely pursue and capture the nomination only to lose the election. But the primaries are stacked in his favor... “Unlikely”

Kristen Gillibrand, 55 - I think her moment has passed, probably for good.  She has played the power card too much, delaying votes to get what she wants.  Some candidates can get away with that a little, but I think she will find that she is not one of them. It’s tough enough being a female politician from New York...just ask Hillary.  The presumption among Dems in the rest of the country is that you will be difficult and prickly.   You have to have an Amy Kloubachar-type personality to overcome that.  Gillibrand has played into that stereotype. She did not show any traits in 2020 that make me think she can charm black votes in Michigan, Georgia, and South Carolina and win the nomination. “No”.

Deval Patrick, 66 - I think if he doesn’t have “it” yet, he isn’t going to get it. I think he is actually bordering on too old!  He is a slightly more personable version of Cory Booker.  I had been quite interested to see him work as I was told he was Obama-esque.  I did not see any of that.  I think everything I said about Booker’s path to the presidency is true about Patrick.  “No”

Tom Steyer, 63 -  Steyer is a Yale and Stanford educated businessman is worth $1.6B who has spent his millions of dollars of his money in fighting Donald Trump at every abuse of the government.  He has credibility among democrats in that.  In 2020, that alone had him creeping up to the 15% threshold where the DNC decides you matter.  Steyer had moments of weirdness dressed in insecurity in his answers followed by moments of George Washington level righteous ass kicking focus with a Presidential demeanor in 2020.  He presents with sincerity. Does he want to run again?  If he is capable of allowing a campaign manager to aggressively coach the weirdness out of him, he could be a strong candidate.  He seems to do well with all races.  But what are his positions? Pro environment; anti- Trump....that’s just a start if he wants to be an electable candidate. He could absolutely capture the Obama path (black voters = black voters + independents) if his platforms became more interesting and distinct.  “Possibly”
