His name there says Frankie (Catfish)....with his main profile picture being him holding you guessed it...a catfish. He doesn't have many other photos on there, with the exception of a few older military photos that are so blurry you can hardly tell which one he's meant to be.

The rest of his page is pretty empty aside from the music section, where you actually get the first real glimpse at what this man is about. While his music selection is very respectable, it does not overshadow the glaring issues with his profile.

In short, Frankie's profile makes you think "Am I dating the man? The fish? Or a catfish?" Swiping left fs.

Marcus Moreno

This one isn't his fault! His profile is perfect. No really. All the women at The Heroics made sure to help him with it! His photos are cute and show off all his best assets. The bio is a little cheesy in an endearing "yeah he's definitely a dad" way. The problem then? It's Marcus fucking Moreno!!! Leader of the Heroics!!!!!! On Tinder???? There's no way anyone is going to believe it's really him. I believe there's a verification option on Tinder now, but really...even then Idk. Unless he fully comes out on an interview or something to super casually mention he's on Tinder, it just ain't working. No one likes a catfish! (Sorry Frankie!)

Jack Daniels

Mr. "Tinder What?" himself!!!! Let's say he manages to figure out how to set up a profile and all that. It's gonna be inTERESTING to say the least. His photos are actually pretty solid. An intriguing mix of photos of him on the ranch and photos of him in the Statesmen HQ looking very well put together. Opening line is definitely "Save a Horse! Ride a Cowboy! 🤠♥️" Very on brand for him. Followed by something very pro-american about the flag or serving his country and honestly... that's where I'm gone 😅. We get to see a bit of Jack's political mind in Kingsman and let's just say i don't wanna know the rest of it.

I'm grateful this is Tinder and not Bumble. Because if Jack used the audio prompt and I heard that smooth Kentucky accent...forget EVERYTHING I just said. I would be taking a chance on him. Sorry 😔 I can't fix him, but I will have fun trying!!

For namesake, we're gonna set this pre-outbreak. There's no time for swiping in the apocalypse. Profile isn't bad just very empty. He's not really trying and it's kinda obvious. His bio reads something along the lines of "Single dad of a spoiled teen" with mostly photos of himself and Sarah on his profile. A few photos of him and Tommy out camping or on a work site.

And as handsome as he is, the profile feels like something his kid forced him to make as a way of getting him off her back. I wanna sympathize and help her out, but I don't know I have the heart to attempt to win over this very clearly emotionally unavailable DILF. So for that reason, I'm swiping left.

Pero Tovar

If for some ungodly reason Pero was given Internet access and had a dating profile... it'd be a disaster. His bio reads something along the lines of "I don't open this app. If you wish to see me meet me at this pub" with approximate days and times he's there.

The first picture on his profile is a way too far away blurry shot of him training. If I was feeling brave enough to continue scrolling through his photos...the rest would certainly be borderline explicit highly suggestive photos of his torso and groin. And whilst I might think about it for approximately .25 seconds any remaining sense of dignity would kick in before I actually did anything about it. It'll sting momentarily, but I will be swiping left.

Ezra

Another man on this list who should absolutely NOT be given internet access. His photos are beautiful but uninformative...the only shots of him are blurred and artistically obscure. He pads the rest of his profile with photos of books he's reading and grainy shoots of the forest.

The bio...if there's a word limit best believe that Ezra has hit it. He used every given character at his disposal and managed to say very little with all of it. Something about a wandering spirit longing for companionship and a couple sexual innuendos for good measure.

While visually and verbally not the worst profile on this list, his pretension is so utterly palpable through the screen I actually don't think I'd be able to make it through the end of his bio without cringing...also his music selection is all just banjo instrumental???

and then bam teammates era! we started this era by pol dropping the most insane quote:

I'm thinking about it and I wonder if the reason Buddie is so compelling (aside from the parallels) is the fact that they're one of the few couples on the show that has storylines getting together within the show.

Madney is a popular one (what the hell they all are🤷🏾‍♀️), but that developed over the seasons giving fans an (adorable) anchor to rest on.

So did Buddie.

For Bathena, it was a speed run but it made so much sense. They were both older and had established lives before meeting each other and when they decided they were it for each other they were it. (I'm gonna make myself cry 😭)

And HenRen, oh my beautiful henren, their relationship was told backwards and forwards if that makes sense.

They were already established as a complete family who worked together. The storyline who shall not be named was wild and I don't even wanna say it asked commitment to each other after “challenges “ (made of ones volition but i digress) is one that they're dedicated to.

But as I was saying about the Buddie of it all, it logistically and thematically it makes sense.

Two friends whose bond grows over time eventually start to see each other in a new light as they go through life and death together.

But truly once you remove gender and focus only on the emotional beats they share, they mirror any and all romantic paintings from this show and various others. (I'm looking at the rookie fans who i now my head in mourning with you through this tough time rn *I've not seen a minute of the show*)

It's not a crime to see it as romantic when evidently it's written as one.

I've seen many fan edits paralleling their emotional hits (hell the cell block gunshot episode and bathena's final arc about the missing girl is a recycled mini plot/scene *very effective*)

But honestly if you look at it as a love story it will become apparent.

And as the show goes on the more they begin to parallel and blur into something of a blatant pairing.

Now less objective more emotional personal, as a panromantic (taking love is love to a next level amirite?) I literally don't see the problem with a lot of same sex ships and this is a really great example.

If it walks like a duck, talks like a duck it's a fuckin duck to me. (Excuse my French teehee🤗 just had to get the point across)

Just wanna say, I love your tags sm on my post!!! I find it so fun to pull comparisons with both zinnia and volo because they have like. A similar character skeleton. Or whatever that means. They're so different yet their relation to their respective deity definitely feels, as u said, 2 sides of the same coin.

And 100% agree with the last comment- I only started thinking about their similarities when I realized how much of the fandom dislikes zinnia and how much of the fandom likes volo qq

Ahh thank you so much!! I'm so sorry I'm responding to this so late, I am just awful about actually sitting down at a computer lately unless it's for work . . . and my work network doesn't allow me to access tumblr because I'm employed by haters 😔 but I'm glad you appreciated the tags! I remember I was actually a bit hesitant about leaving them because I didn't know if they would be Too Much or not, so I'm glad that wasn't the case, haha.

And yeah, Zinnia and Volo definitely foil each other in many ways. What's really interesting about it as well is that, unlike Volo, Zinnia was actually rebuffed by her deity to her face, when it came to a destiny she was literally raised for, which we know since her flashbacks in her Evolutions episode show that she was training to catch Rayquaza as part of her Lorekeeper destiny since she was a young child:

She could arguably be a little older in that second flashback, but not by much. So Zinnia was raised to be the Lorekeeper since her childhood. Her life's purpose was not only know and be able to pass on the history of her people, but also to be able to mega evolve Rayquaza and, together with it, destroy the meteor that would threaten the planet. She knew that doing this would likely result in her death (indicated at multiple points in her dialogue), but she was so devoted to doing it that she went through it anyway. And she managed part of it; she did manage to summon Rayquaza.

And then . . . Rayquaza rejected her. To her face. In favor of some random (by comparison) kid.

By all accounts, Zinnia had every right to be furious. Her deity has rejected her in favor of some rando when Zinnia devoted her entire life (and was willing to sacrifice her life) to it. But is she furious? Does she take it out on May? No. We know that she's lowkey suicidal (some of her dialogue suggests she's almost hoping she'll die in the effort to stop the meteor so that she can be reunited with the original Aster in the afterlife), but she still takes it in stride because the most important thing is that the meteor is stopped. So she helps the rando as much as she can, and then leaves to figure out what she can do with this life she didn't expect to have.

Then, on the opposite end, there's Volo. Volo, as far as we know, was never raised with any special destiny in mind. To be fair, we really don't know anything about Volo's backstory except that it's heavily implied he's a descendant of the Celestica people. But that's it. We're never told that he had a destiny to fulfill alongside Arceus. Instead, Volo himself decided that he was going to summon and meet Arceus, and Volo himself decided he was going to summon and meet Arceus wholly for his own reasons, and Volo himself never actually came face to face with Arceus, and took that as a rejection, and then tried to murder the random kid Arceus chose over it, as if it's that random kid's fault.

It really is the complete opposite in every way. Zinnia had every reason to believe that Rayquaza would agree to work with her, yet when it refused, she took it in stride and did what she could to help. Volo had no reason to believe that Arceus would want to work with him, and when it refused, he absolutely lost his shit and tried to murder a child. There's a reason why Zinnia got closure by forming a sync pair with Rayquaza in Pokemon Masters and why I'm pretty damn sure Volo is not going to get the same treatment with Arceus, lmao.

And don't get me wrong, I love both characters. Personally, I hope Volo never gets better. Don't get me wrong, if his motivation is supposed to be that he wants to make a world where his people and culture were never lost and where Hisui was never colonized, then I do think that's a sympathetic motivation, and certainly I came away from PLA thinking that Kamado was more despicable than Volo, mostly because the game treated Kamado like a sympathetic, misunderstood man despite his blatant bigotry toward the DP clans. But Volo is at his best when he is absolutely off his shits and I want him to stay that way. Like the fact that he actually tried to murder the player is iconic. Love that energy for him. Keep it coming.

But that doesn't change the fact that, yeah, he is off his shits. And any sympathetic motivations we can give him are headcanon because Game Freak didn't feel the need to elaborate. And more importantly (and to the point of your second paragraph), yeah, it really gets me that people are constantly vilifying Zinnia (including downright calling her a villain) for trying to save two worlds and ultimately bowing out gracefully when her destiny was stolen from her, yet fawn all over Volo or Lusamine. I'm sure the fact that Zinnia is a darker skinned woman (as opposed to the the blonde hair and pale skin of the others) has nothing to do with it. [/heavy sarcasm]

Age: I was talking to a couple of friends about this! @peonycats believes turkey to be born around the years 900-1000 CE. meanwhile, uzbekistan would be born around the late 1200s, meaning that turkey's older than uzb by 300 years... 😔 rip my sexy milf uzb hcs...

History: they go wayy back. the Timurid Empire actually had a battle with the Ottoman Empire, largely out of the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I's concern that the Timurids were expanding too far west. while the Ottomans were heading to the east, Timur's forces cut from behind and sieged Ankara, which started the Battle of Ankara(1402). the Timurid Empire won, also holding the title to being the only ones to capture an Ottoman Sultan in person in all of the Ottoman Empire's history. Not only that, but the Timurid Empire kinda caused a civil war in the Ottoman Empire due to the Sultan dying in captivity, causing all his sons to fight about who the legitimate heir was.

9. Are there cultural or lore specific aspects to their identity? If applicable, does their species affect it?

JIAHAO

Yes! So I’ve been toying around with Peking/Beijing Opera and I think it was possibly Jia’s gender awakening. Specifically dan characters. Dan are female roles + have a couple specific subsets but historically were played by men! Jia, when she was younger, had the chance to watch a performance of White Snake Legend and was absolutely enamored with the idea of playing Bai Suzhen (the White Snake). Her singing was gorgeous, her dancing was beautiful, and her movements were so elegant that for the first time Jia desperately wished he could just be her. 

For a period afterwards, Jia was insistent on joining a troupe (with hopes of playing exclusively dan characters) but he honest to goodness hated all the acrobatic she’d have to learn. And it’s one of the first things a performer needs to learn before any singing or dancing. Then puberty kicked in and her voice got too deep for the roles she wanted to play so… 

Though Jia still likes watching Peking Opera and singing along even though her voice isn’t as high and floaty as the performers are. (<- I do think she’ll become a massive patron of the art form when he gets older.)  

10. Does your oc celebrate Pride? How?

All of them do to various extents! Jia + Fiona go all out, then Rams, and Rin does the least of all. 

Jia + Fiona are going to parades, already have an itinerary that has them at at least one event a day, and special outfits for the month. Expect seeing them out and about everywhere. 

Rams helped organize events really! So you might not see cos a lot of places + be assured co is doing something co loves and celebrating in co’s own special way! 

Rin attends the parades + expect a lot of merch. If there’s any month she spends the most money? It’s pride month 🌈

(shoutout to @saibug1022 for accidentally reminding me I can, in fact, play around with canon characters too xD) Okay, I’ve been rotating Atlas in my head so, here we go!

Atlas is both genderspace + spacegender. I’ve been using cosmo/galaxy pronouns for cosmos for a while now (<- by that I mean the like, three? tops times I’ve talked about galaxy). Spacegender, according to the LGBTQIA+ Wiki entry, is a gender feeling that is void-like and never ending while still feeling full + empty at the same time! Genderspace is a xenogender influenced/related to space <- very very easy to mix the two up, i know 😔. Though, it’s technically two genders, Atlas doesn’t see it like that? They’re way too tied up together in a way that feels like one concrete gender. 

In basic terms: galaxy’s gender is the vastness of space itself with all the cosmos and stars and planetary bodies –all of it. That’s comos.

It’s a little maverine (meaning: outside masculinity, femininity, neutrality, man, woman, and anything in between while still being heavily gendered). I genuinely think it’s hilarious that Rams is agender and Atlas has a loud, atypical gender (<- this is also the reason I’ve been trying out new names for cosmos which is going, uh, not well). Wanna know the numero uno problem that comes with it??

Atlas has done this to me. I cannot know peace anymore. Do you want to know how much I’ve searched around for something that really fits Atlas? Because it’s been so long. It’s no secret that I do a fair amount of clothing stuff for my ocs. And I’ve really wanted to do one for Atlas. 

But I can’t

Cuz nothing WORKS. After searching weeks, i have landed on the shiny material (if you know the name please tell me) prominently featured in retrofuturism and that’s it. <- I’ve started going through older, kinda dead styles and deciding on frankensteining Atlas’ style from the corpse of other styles. (I am enjoying myself, let me be clear). 

I don’t. I don’t know how I got here but the only way out is through and I will find Atlas cool and nice clothes. I wILL.

Back then we were thinking about people to ship JC with, and WQ existed. Since then, Untamed gave our little crackship food. And since then I also started OTPing Chengxian and the core transfer has been a object of easy fixation. It would be inaccurate to say that I started shipping Chengqing because I started shipping Chengxian. But I certainly ship Chengqing through a certain amount of WWX feelings - not only Chengxian, in fact.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

sometimes a mad scientist performs a secret, impossible experiment on someone who doesn't know what's going on and they get together afterwards, and suddenly there's this huge, grotesque thing between them.

I think they should kink on it, but I also think JC would deal very badly indeed with WQ's involvement in the gc transfer. (in my mind she doesn't tell him until she has no choice/it comes out.) I can't overstate how much I adore the kink (in a wide sense) potential between them.

they get one another, about duty and family and keeping the people you care for close and safe and not trusting easily.

also - this is notably less my thing - but I think they'd be good at taking of one another when they're not tearing each other apart for the heavy topics (they agree on duty, but that doesn't mean it would never come up in a bad argument, and the core transfer reframes everything there - suddenly wq has very little room to argue about her dutifulness! you were rearming a direct enemy of your sect babe! you were 100% betraying your sect!)(unless: and I think this is juicy: unless WQ explains that she expected JC to die after the core transfer. no JC with a core, no betrayal.)

and yes also chengqingxian, or at least wq and wwx being besties.

also very into the age-gap between them. she's older! she's already respected and established and a wordly grown-up! it's not relevant to post-canon chengqing except as a contrast to how things were back then, which is still very interesting, but in a canon divergence where the Wen siblings go to Lotus Pier, or sth like that, I really like the idea/image of WQ's crush on JC. it's funny and it's cute and look I think JC should get a win. The win in this case is WQ horny-clamping her jaw and respecting him. his brains. while looking disrespectfully.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

...this is very dependent of "what-ifs" but: I don't think JC would be totally okay with WQ and WWX's relationship.

He's deeply insecure when it comes to people loving him, and WWX betrayed his trust and convinced WQ to go along with it. (in Untamed it's made worse by the fact that JC and WQ already knew one another.) For me, WWX and WQ get one another to a level that other characters don't, I'm only 10% kidding when I call them soulmates, and imo JC would not be able to deal with that very well unless it's solved in Chengqingxian. (which I think he'd shoulder better because they're both here; if WWX is with LWJ it's... it's not exactly YZY while JFM is thinking of WCZ and CSS, but something like that. to me. I do think he'd be jealous.)

less unpopular than it seemed at one time, but bears repeating that it's fine for WQ to neither peg nor dom JC. I mean I'm failing to write that but I think WQ needs and wants to be pampered from time to time. Otoh I also think she's a lot more likely than WWX to tell JC what she needs, since her self-image isn't all twisted up in being better-than-jc at all times.

I clearly didn't try hard enough to keep WWX out of this answer.😔

I forgot how good the writing and animation are in the first season, like they truly thrived under aniplex😔 the brief white blood period in I think season 3 shows us just how good we had it

I love seeing Hawk and Meliodas's relationship, and his star Boar earring😭 plus having the Boar hat as the main location is just so comforting !!

Also I JUST realized his name is hawk because of a ham hok😭😭 this is like when I realized toe mater's name was tomato at the ripe age of 18

I miss the holy knights being powerful. Like I get that the Sins are always more powerful than them, had a long way to go in terms of power ups, and meliodas straight up had most of his power sealed but like DAMN. They were so cool in season 1 !! Gil was such a badass😭 I guess I just wish that the holy knights powered up along with the Sins

Seeing the very first episode got me thinking about the original pilot Manga (chapter 0) and how cool it might have been !! Like I love the story we got, but I do think those versions of Mel and Elizabeth maybe would have been better than the ones we got😳 like I just really like Meli's original design, I feel like he looks a bit older, and chapter 0 Elizabeth is simply superior ngl. She's funny, brave, and assertive - a lot more like Liz and goddess Elizabeth, except funnier

The first half of season 1 has one of my fave intro and outros like damn I forgot how fucking cool they were. Some of my fave songs to !! (my all time fave is def howling from season 3 part 2 (i think lol) tho)

Okay SO in episode 5, when Ban is about to get his scar from the dragon handle sword, he tells Meliodas "you and me have been hanging together for a lot of years now." This scene takes place 12 years before present (bp). Does this mean Ban and Meliodas were friends before the formation of the Sins? Or was Ban the first after him and Merlin? Ban has been immortal 20 years BP, leaving 8 years in between present and the flashback. 8 years before this scene, Meliodas was still in Danafal/Danfor and would be for another 4 years. What does any of this mean? Idk, just thot it was intriguing lol.

Also how did I not notice this is the first time we see demon!Meliodas !! Baby's first sighting as an unnatural creature with otherworldly rage🥰🥰

Also the fact we never see the scar Gil gave him again lol. Plus him presumably needing to do demon mode so hellfire can heal him is actually rlly cool

Just thought about how Elizabeth laying her hand on his chest to check the scar was the first time in years his love touches him with gentleness or concern🥲🥲

I think we were all kinda expecting more bojere shenanigans now that they're finally together again, and the silence has been a bit disappointing. 😔 But it's of course totally understandable that they want to just spend time together and not report their every move in social media (particularly knowing how especially Bojan feels about the whole thing). I'm happy just knowing that they're out there having fun. And they did not actually post *that* much during the previous visits either if I really think about it. Maybe now that the tour actually starts we get more content... Fingers crossed! We've been starved for so long and they get to hang out so rarely that we need something to get us through to the next meeting, whenever that is lol.

You know anon, that's what I think too - now that the tour starts it's sort of "work hours" for them so maybe there will be something? (it's totally fine if we don't, the whole point is about music anyway and not content).

Personal anti-wishlist aka do NOT want predictions for Picard Season 3 finale

Screentime is limited. Raffi is either not seen or only in background shots. It’s explained she is trying to sabotage the Titan’s engines or something if she is mentioned at all. Seven and Raffi are barely (if at all) on screen together and their relationship is never mentioned.

Seven is shown carting Shaw to sickbay. She uses her Borg nanites (hello Voyager callback) to help bring him back to life. This doesn’t make him a Borg it is just temporary. Shaw is not grateful and chews her out for it. Says she isn’t StarFleet. Seven agrees and resigns.

There is no Saffi spin-off, no Fenris Rangers. Raffi is never seen again. Seven is either never seen again or…

Shaw gets his own show spin-off. Possibly Seven guest stars one episode so he can save her life, and show he is magnanimous while still pressing the point that he was right and she was never StarFleet.

As part of being magnanimous Shaw pays Seven a compliment. Only it’s something backhanded like “you made really good coffee” and the writers think fans will be happy at the nod to Janeway, and completely overlook the fact that in the 25th century a brilliant woman is reduced to being ‘good at making drinks’.

The only assimilated we see get killed/do bad things are aliens, POC or both.

At the end Geordi is seen hugging his two crying girls and Sydney apologises to him and goes home with him. As part of the end montage she is shown handing him tools to fix the battle damage on the Enterprise-D because fuck that she had dreams of her own to be a pilot I guess.

To gain an advantage in battle Picard uses the “Picard manoeuvre”. Bonus points if it doesn’t make sense as to how it would help.

Even though Vulcan, Klingons etc. have a lot of their own ships nobody can/will help them against the assimilated fleet. Only the Enterprise is fighting the good fight. Sort of like an oblique reference to the hopefulness regarding the Federation shown in Prodigy. That was where StarFleet ships were all taken over by an external force and made to attack each other…. wait a minute *deep sigh* but anyway nobody helps because fuck that stupid kid show right? 😔

Somebody very gravely says “we are on our own”. Despite being decades older, and the odds being 50-1, the Enterprise is so special it manages to hold it’s own in battle long enough for Jack and Picard to save the day.

Even though he is assimilated and it should be impossible Jack is ‘special’ and Picard manages to reach him through his special Dad bond (fuck Beverley as the mother who raised him I guess), and Jack manages to sever the connection/put them to sleep/stop all the StarFleet assimilated.

In a parallel to Nemesis the Borg Queen self-destructs. Picard tells Data to get Jack off the ship and he has to stay behind. They both could have escaped given Picard spent a minute monologuing about friendship and family but he has to sacrifice himself like Data did in reverse.

As the unassimilated were murdered the changelings were all killed. Why/how they teamed up with the Borg, what happened to the people they impersonated etc. is never explained. They are dead, the situation is tied up with a bow. And this “they are all dead” is only an off-hand mention in a single sentence.

Despite name-dropping her Janeway neither appears nor is mentioned unless she comes in for a cameo at the end to lead the memorial/give Jack his medal/commission etc.

Hundreds were killed but the big memorial service only focuses on Picard and how he is the most legendary of all StarFleet heroes.

Jack is given command/made Captain of the new Enterprise even though it’s the flagship, he never went to the academy and has no experience. This is possibly done at said memorial service.

Inexplicably Worf is security, Beverley CMO, Deanna counsellor and Riker as first officer. This is seen with “Captain on the bridge” when Jack walks in. They all look very proud.

Kestra is never mentioned. Who is looking after her, where she is etc. is never explained.

The last line reveals Jack has taken the name Picard so he is “Captain Picard” like his dad and he says the legendary ‘Engage’.

I really hope I don’t reblog this next Friday and cross a lot off. I just really hate how damn plausible I think this list is 😭 this is a do NOT want list universe. Don’t get confused now. This is like worst case scenario for where they could go (in my opinion). So let’s really hope not. Unless of course I have had a failure of imagination and it is even worse somehow 😬

Chapter 15 - A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers

Theme of the day: Trust

I have to break more bubbles: The mountains don’t actually bare down on you when you’re in Denver. You can’t even see them from ground level in downtown 😂 You gotta be in a city that’s like right up against the mountain range like Boulder to see them wherever you are or like... in a mountain town to get that feeling of “a tidal wave about to crash in the city” lmao.

Down to the chapter, if we’re talking about trust then I have to bring up the conversation Percy has with Luke. At this point, Percy or really anyone has no reason to distrust Luke, like he’s been at camp for a while, one of the older campers, a counselor, someone who everyone looks up to. Especially among the trio, there’s Percy who really admires him (Luke basically took him under his wing!), Grover who’s probably in the same boat, and then Annabeth who has a crush on him and known him the longest. But as Percy learns at the end of the book, Luke is not what he seems. He’s the whole reason for this quest and also leaked the details about it in camp to create discord among the campers. He even says the person who leaked the info is likely the one who summoned the hellhound lmao. And then he insinuates that Annabeth might be that person!! Percy already is burdened with knowing someone will betray him, he doesn’t need to be doubting the very people he needs to put the most trust in on his quest! Asshole. He’s a good actor tho. It just makes me sad how Percy trusts Luke, so much that he feels relieved to see him, is so comfortable with him that he feels he can vent to him about his quest. All the while Luke is the last person he should confide in like that.

Interestingly the second person Percy shouldn’t be trusting shows up in this chapter. Although in this case they don’t exactly trust Ares by choice. He’s just a god that shows up and offers them help in exchange for doing him a favor. And it’s not just the trio that are putting their faith in Ares, but also Zeus himself, who sent his best out to look for the very thing Ares helped steal lmao. Also interesting how both Ares and Luke suggest that Hades is the evil mastermind in the same chapter. And he revealed his cards indirectly too with saying the culprit is framing someone to start a war lol. Ares also wasn’t lying by saying that he’s to thank for the quest in a way 😂 Another parallel between Ares and Luke is that they both provide Percy with gifts and just last chapter the Nereid cryptically told him to not trust the gifts.

I find it nice how... easily the trio rely on each other. They all have stakes in this quest, but they still choose to work together. Like even with Annabeth and her self proclaimed rivalry, she’s very much a part of the team. Even when she initially didn’t want to go into the Tunnel of Love with Percy, she still (begrudgingly) follows him down. And vice versa, when Annabeth states that she should be the one to call when to jump from the boat, Percy still yielded (and he even admits that she made the right call). 13. "You're safe, I promise."

Synthia excitedly bounced on her heels as she watched out the window, waiting for Gia and Kendall to arrive. Finally 10, her mom had agreed to let her go trick or treating alone with her friends, her flip phone charged and in her bag just in case.

“Synthie,” her mom called, walking in the room, taking in her precious daughter in her white angel costume, “oh, don’t you look precious. Are you absolutely sure you want to go without me? I trust Gia and Kendall very much, but if you want me to still take you guys, I can. You don’t have to grow up so fast.”

“Mom,” Synthia groaned, “we’ll be fine! You promised we could go this year!”

Ms. Kiss sighed, tucking a strand white blond hair behind her daughter’s ear. “I know, honey, I just don’t want you to feel like you have to if you’re not ready.”

“I’m ready. We’ll stay together, I have my phone and Kendall has one too.”

“Okay, baby, you know how to get ahold of me if you need to, it looks like your little friends are here,” she replied, gesturing at them walking up the driveway.

Synthia shrieked with excitement, hugging her mom before bidding her a goodbye and running out the door. Ms. Kiss shook her head affectionately and watched them walk down the driveway until they were out of sight.

Walking with their arms linked, Synthia babbled on and on about how excited she was that they finally got to go trick or treating without her mom, even though Gia and Kendall’s parents had been letting them go alone for two years now. Synthia was somewhat of a late bloomer and being an only child to a single mother didn’t help.

They made it through most of the night without any incident, until it was half an hour before Synthia was due home and a house on the end of the block had set up a huge haunted maze in the front yard, letting trick or treaters go through to get their candy.

“You guys! We have to go though, it’ll be so much fun,” Synthia begged, yanking them toward the maze.

Kendall and Gia shared a look, even at such a young age, they were protective of Synthia and hated more than anything to see her upset. Gia had been through haunted houses like that before and Kendall was always watching horror movies with her older sister, but Synthia was a different story. Most of the time it seemed as if the wind blowing scared the poor girl.

“Synth, are you sure we should? It might be pretty scary,” Kendall tried to reason, uncertainty in her voice.

Gia nodded in agreement. “Yeah, it looks really scary.”

“Oh come on guys! Don’t chicken out!”

Neither wanted to hurt her feelings and admit they were reluctant to go in because of her, so they agreed, linking their arms together and going in with her.

They walked through the cracked archway, walking into a darkened cooridor, the sound of creaking and chains rattling following them. Each step made nerves gnaw in Kendall and Gia’s stomachs, constantly looking over at Synthia to check on her. She still seemed to have a smile on her face, even with lights flashing and a brief jump scare.

Relieved they were almost at the end, that quickly changed. Someone dressed in an all too realistic costume, jumped out from behind a wall and screamed in their faces. Glowing eyes and a terrifying scream had even Gia and Kendall jumping back. Though, Synthia was another story, her skin pale frozen in place, hands shaking as she tried to stifle her tears.

“Synthia,” Kendall cooed, trying to get her to snap out of it, tugging on her arm but she stayed still, shaking like a leaf.

“Gi, what do we do?” Kendall whispered, “she’s like stunned or something!”

They could hear screams ahead of them, signalling there were more scares ahead. “Grab her arm,” Gia instructed, taking her other.

“Listen up, fuckers, if anyone else jumps out at us, I swear to god,” Gia screamed down the corridor as they motioned for Kendall to walk her along.

Synthia was now crying, fingers tightening on Gia and Kendall’s wrists as they took baby steps to get her out and Gia continued to threaten anyone that came near them.

Finally, they made it out and Synthia crumbled against them.

“I-I’m s-scared,” Synthia managed to get out between sobs, “I-I want m-my mom.”

“Kendall is gonna call her, can you take deep breaths with me,” Gia coached her gently, their usual loud voice somehow soft.

Gia had no idea what they were doing but they remembered their teacher telling them about breathing exercises to use when they were angry and they only hoped they’d work for someone who was scared.

Synthia took breaths alongside Gia until it worked, calming her down enough to just be sniffling weakly against Gia while Kendall rubbed her back.

“You’re safe, we promise,” Kendall assured her, not letting go of her until her mother’s minivan was pulling up in front of the house they were at. Even then, they both walked her over the van and held her hand once they were all buckled in.

“I’m sorry,” Synthia mumbled as they pulled up her driveway, “I ruined Halloween because I’m such a baby.”

Her mother opened her mouth to speak, but she stopped herself as she heard little whispers coming from behind her.

“You’re not a baby, that was really scary. I was scared too,” Gia said.

“Yeah, me too, and you didn’t even scream, you’re so brave, Synth,” Kendall added.

Synthia giggled. “Really? You think I’m brave?”

In unison, they both agreed, sincerity behind every word.

Synthia’s mom smiled to herself, thanking the universe that her sweet daughter had some of the best friends in the world. Though, as she watched in the rearview, Kendall and Gia laying kisses on each of Synthia’s cheeks, she wondered if someday they’d be more than just the best friends in the world.
