New To This - Chapter 8

A/N: So glad to be back and writing again. Thanks to every single wonderful one of you who checked on me and sent me well wishes! You all know who you are and I appreciate you all so much!

MASTERLIST

Three sets of workout gear for the week, one for each day of the tryout. Two extra t-shirts. One good pair of jeans. Three outfits for nights out, most likely with her fellow recruits. Deodorant. Makeup bag. Skincare products. Certain that she had everything, she zipped her carry-on luggage closed. She checked her watch. 6.30am. Her Uber would be arriving any moment from now to drive her to the airport.

“Babe?”

The sound of Andre’s voice turned Delilah’s head towards the bedroom door, where he stood holding something in his hands.

“You forgot somethin',” he whispered, a hint of mirth struggling with the sadness in his voice as he held out what looked like a denim jacket. And not just any denim jacket. It was her favorite one, with the back embroidered with the words “Dee & Dre Forever”. She’d had that jacket since she was a teenager and had worn it through many milestones in her life so far; her high school graduation, her first job, Andre’s proposal. Despite her annoyance with him, she allowed herself to smile as she went to take it from him. “Thanks,” she murmured.

For a moment, the couple stood there, regarding each other silently. Then, he extended his hand to her, which she took, letting him pull her in for a big hug. Her heart began to thaw as his arms tightened around her waist, his face nuzzling her neck before lifting to press his lips to hers. Her blood still simmered because he was making her take this trip alone, but he seemed to be trying. Plus, she couldn’t resist responding to his sweet kisses, and she found herself missing him already.

The buzz of her phone broke their embrace, as well as the honk of a car horn blaring through the quiet of the morning. “I gotta go. My Uber’s here,” she whispered, her eyes suddenly misty at the thought of leaving him alone for an entire week, the longest they’d ever been apart.

With his arm around her shoulders, Andre escorted her through the front door and helped her stow her luggage in the trunk. He kissed her one more time. “I love you, baby. Good luck out there,” he said.

“Thanks.”

Four days later

The final day of tryouts arrived with a bittersweet feeling as Delilah joined the assembly of her fellow recruits around the ring. It was almost eight in the morning and they should have gotten started by now, but she appreciated the little break in transmission. 

She thought Tank was a tough trainer, but he was a teddy bear compared to the coaches of the world-renowned Performance Center. Their drills were brutal and the promo classes were intense. She was sore and strained, but she could honestly say she had never felt stronger. She was hanging with D1 athletes and former pros, ranking among the top ten women in all the combines. Her promo skills needed some more work but she was in the perfect place to improve. She was getting encouragement from people who were experts at spotting talent, and she was eating up all their advice with a spoon.

The head coach, Matt Bloom, clapped his hands and called for everyone to settle down before making his announcement. “So guys, for our last day, we got a special guest coach who will be overseeing your progress today.” He paused to absorb the curious chatter among the recruits. “Without wasting any time, please join me in welcoming one half of the greatest tag team in WWE history, Main Event Jey Uso!”

Goosebumps sprouted on Delilah’s arms before Coach Bloom even finished saying his name. Sure enough, there he was, strutting through the door to the recruits’ rapturous applause. They had talked just yesterday and not once did he mention that he was coming. The star power oozed from him even from across the room. He was dressed for a workout, showing off that fabulous body of his, and Delilah couldn’t help but stare. She wasn’t the only one, as she could hear a number of the girls fawning over him, stirring an emotion inside her that had no business being stirred. 

The recruits stood on the apron surrounding the ring, watching him demonstrate the perfect Samoan drop. He looked good. Really good. Throughout, she kept her distance, not wanting to rouse any suspicions. He stayed out of reach too, but that didn’t stop the electricity from crackling when he was near her, or the jealousy that simmered inside her when females flirted with him, a few of them laying their desperation on thick with their flirty gestures and hushed, lewd comments about getting him in their beds. To Josh’s credit, he seemed unfazed by it all and Delilah wanted to believe his aloofness had something to do with her. No matter what those bitches tried, none of them had any chance with her m–…him.

At the end of the tryout, the prospects got to mingle with Josh and all the other trainers for one last time. Delilah remained at arm’s length as she watched him work the room, keeping her cool when he finally made his way over to her.

“Fancy meeting you here,” she smiled, elbowing him in the ribs and making him chuckle.

“Wanted to surprise you. You ain’t miss me too much, did you?” he joked, his eyes drifting down her body for a split second before meeting hers again. A blush crept up Delilah’s neck. 

“Consider me surprised. But I’m glad you came,” she said sincerely.

“Me too. You killed it out there, girl. All your hard work is payin’ off.”

“I know. It’s been a dream and then some,” Delilah sighed happily, looking around in awe at the place that had been her classroom for the last three days. “I still can’t believe I’m here, this is so surreal,” she gushed.

Josh laughed at her dreamy expression. “Aw, you so cute. Tell you what, how about dinner with me tonight,” he offered.

Delilah’s brows furrowed in confusion. “Huh?”

“I ain’t stutter,” he smiled. “You’ve had a long week. You should celebrate in style. Come kick it with ya boy.”

Wow. Was he seriously asking her out? Was that what this was? “There’s a party tonight for all the recruits and we’re all gonna be there. Won’t it look weird if I’m not there?” she asked, acutely aware that it sounded like an excuse.

“You can stay at your party for a bit and then come to me,” Josh replied smoothly. “The hotel I’m staying at got a great steakhouse. You’ll love it. I’ll get you a ride for eight-thirty. Sound good?” 

The confident tone of his voice left no room for any protest. Not that she was going to. The lure of free fancy food and his company was too great. “Okay. Eight-thirty it is,” she answered.

The atmosphere inside the hookah lounge was great. Everyone was in a mellow and good mood. Laughter and drinks were plentiful as the recruits let loose and enjoyed the night. Delilah was on cloud nine. This was the kind of camaraderie she had imagined when she first embarked on this wild dream of hers, to bond with elite competitors and become friends over a shared dream they all hoped would come true. 

But she looked forward to seeing Josh too, and she was counting down the seconds to eight-thirty. Her heart leapt when his text came in informing her that a car was outside waiting for her. Sneaking away was quite easy and as she slipped inside the Chevy Suburban to head to his hotel, a million thoughts ran through her head as to what else was in store tonight. 

Josh was waiting in the lobby for her, his eyes lighting up when they landed on her. Delilah forced herself to close her mouth as quickly as it dropped. Words couldn't quite describe how delicious he looked.

Dressed in all black, his tattoos glistening on his skin and the jeweled gold Cuban link glittering under the collar of his short-sleeved dress shirt. He wore a devastating smile while clutching a bouquet of red roses in his hands. That visual alone made her glad that she'd chosen to wear a bodysuit instead of a dress.

“You look beautiful, baby girl. These are for you,” he murmured before leaning down and pressing a soft kiss to her cheek.

Delilah blushed, holding the bouquet to her bosom as she inhaled their scent. She let him take her smaller hand in his and led her into the fancy restaurant. The maitre’d was waiting for them already, ushering the pair to a private corner table. The little lanterns above were soothing and illuminated the elegant space. After Josh helped Delilah into her seat and took his place next to her, the waiter handed them their menus and left to give them some privacy. 

“This place is really nice. I get why you wanted us to come here,” Delilah smiled at Josh. 

“Only the best for you, baby girl. Order whatever you want,” he told her simply.

The food was delicious - steak for him, lobster for her - and conversation was fun. There was always such an easy, natural flow between them, and as the night wore on they seemed to grow closer, their laughter softer and their gazes more intent and intimate. They sat side by side, with their shoulders pressed close together. She was soon leaning into him, feeling nice and warm from a mix of Daiquiri and white wine and his bigger muscular body warming hers. It wasn’t the wisest move on her part, but she felt so cozy just being in his presence and she was genuinely enjoying his attention.

It had been a while since she did something like this with Andre.

“I’m lookin’ for a new place in P-cola,” Josh informed her as he took a sip of his champagne. “You said your man’s a landscaper, right?” 

With her dessert fork, Delilah cut up a piece of her red velvet ganache cake slice. “Yeah.”

Josh felt his body flush with desire as he watched her slide the cake into her mouth, licking the fork with long leisurely swipes of her tongue as she relished every delicious crumb. Clearing his throat, he soldiered on. “A’ight, cool. I might hit him up to do some stuff for me.”

Delilah scoffed and took another bite. “Yeah, let’s not do that.”

“Why? What’s the problem? You don’t want him to find out about us or somethin’?” he joked. Or at least he hoped it sounded like one.

She rolled her eyes. “Um, what ‘us’? I’m engaged and you’re married. Remember?”

“Separated,” Josh corrected.

“Right. Not divorced. Big difference.”

“So if I was divorced, would things be different?” Josh inquired.

“With who?”

It was his turn to roll his eyes. “With you and me, duh.”

There he went again. ‘Us’. ‘You and me’. Why did she feel like she was being put on the spot? More importantly, why did she feel guilty for not giving him the answers he wanted? Putting her fork down, her shrug was shy and half-hearted. “I dunno,” she mumbled.

Josh kissed his teeth with a wry smile. “Damn. Way to break a man’s heart, baby girl.”

Delilah shook her head and sipped her drink. “You been sayin’ some wild shit lately.”

“Maybe. But in my defense, I can’t help myself around you sometimes,” he said in a voice so husky that she had to turn her head to face him. His arm had circled her shoulders, bringing her just a little closer to him. The weight of his stare was crushing, and she tried to focus on something else, struggling to steer away from the path she’d thought she could manage venturing down.

“Gee, this is some good cake,” she breathed and picked up the plate of cake a little too aggressively, cursing to herself when some frosting smeared her index finger.

“Let me get that.” Josh reached out to capture her wrist, bringing her finger to his mouth and sucking off the frosting slowly, teasing her, testing her willpower. She sat still, wide eyes locking with his own hypnotic and mesmerizing irises, the color of hot coffee on a cold winter's day. He was such a beautiful man, so sexy that she felt paralyzed, her heart thrumming with a familiar warmth that rushed down south to make her slick between her thighs. The restaurant seemed to shrink around them in the minutes that they stared at each other, that simmering tension finally boiling over to the point of no return.

Josh released her hand to caress her cheek, his tongue snaking out to moisten his lips as he stared her down with a bone-melting intensity.

"You are so beautiful," he murmured, dipping his head and brushing his lips over her own.

It was as if an unstoppable force collided with an immovable object when their mouths met. The first taste of each other only served to heighten the suffocating lust between them. Her fingers raked through his short hair, a low moan escaping her throat when their tongues tangled, her heart thumping rapidly from his sweet taste. This kiss awakened her body in ways only one other man in her lifetime had, burning her from the inside out, burning away all memories of him and leaving her famished for someone else. 

Without breaking the kiss, Josh wrapped his arms around Delilah’s waist and pulled her on top of him. Instantly, she felt his dick, hard and persistent, through his pants and it rubbed against the thin material of her romper, right on her clit. “I’m sorry, I'm sorry I can’t,” she muttered, refusing to meet his eyes. “I have to go.” Without another word, she snatched her purse and rushed away from their table and out the door. Josh watched her flee, bewildered by her reaction.

((Some season 7 theories and predictions))

((Now I'm raging like an erupting volcano because procreate deleted my fanart I'm throwing some theories about what was the season and what we should expect last episode. Again, I tagged things if you want to be spoiler free.))

((One theories about the 3 characters behind Rick for the poster promo is each of them represent a lesson Rick needed to learn to face whatever happens last episode.))

(( First let's talk about the 3 main characters behind Rick))

((From what I gathered, each of them were a lesson Rick had to learn to order to allow himself to progress. It seems from right to left the order of lessons fit but usually for American/European standard you would read left to right for older to future, so I wonder if this reverse order has a meaning? Like some from the past and some from the future?))

((The lessons I think Rick had to learn are:

Poopybutthole: Rick needs to care better about people he already cherishs (I think?)

Prime: revenge is not and shouldn't be a fullfilling ending for your life. Or at least revenge doesn't resolve everything.

Bigfoot: because some being aren't as intelligent as you want them to be or as you vision intelligence doesn't mean they aren't intelligent and you shouldn't underestimate them or treat them poorly.

((Note Prime is the biggest one, so I think the most important lesson Rick needs to learn is this one.))

((Not how the 3 are shaped like a triptych? Often used to represent a story on 3 parts which can be used as represent the narrative: the beginning, the present and the end. In christianity when they represent jesus he ends up sacrifying himself for the well being of others.))

((Also thought, from what I remember christian triptychs often represent the most important in the middle while the ones on the sides are details.))

((I also like they look like ghosts. It makes me think of the christmas tale where Scrooge being an horrible person is visited by 3 ghosts showing the past, the present and the future. Still theories, but I like the fact in the poster they don't look present or even real!))

The Bear, Season 3 PREDICTIONS

OKAY! So with The Bear premiering slightly earlier now, I wanted to go ahead and get my predictions (and maybe some delusional wishes) out on here because I just saw the still where Syd and Carmy are drinking tea after Carmy gets out of the fridge and I definitely had Syd being there when he got out of the walk-in. I never did get my fanfic out before the new season (although who knows. There’s still time!) so I hope I’ll still be in the headspace to finish it after I see the new episodes!

My Predictions:

Let’s start with Sydcarmy first. Oh, hell. This season is going to be one that drags us through all of the emotions. It’s already giving angst galore from all of the promos. A lot of us are worried about this ship, but I have to believe that while Storer may have not initially been on the sydcarmy train, we have a believer in Calo and loves love. We’ll be okay but it’s not going to always be pretty. We’re about to go through it, 100%, but I think the arduous emotional jouney will be worth it in the end (the end perhaps not being this season…). 

As mentioned, I predicted to myself that Syd would be waiting for Carmy when he finally is freed the walk-in refrigerator before I saw the image. To add to this, I believe this will be a very tense moment. Syd is incredibly disappointed with Carmy, but we’re going to get a hellava moment between the two in the very first episode. This moment is going to show just how deep Syd’s love (and I actually do mean in the friendship sense here) runs for Carmy. Despite Carmy already fucking up by not get the fridge fixed, we will get to see Syd give Carmy more grace than he deserves. But she is going to be skeptical as hell of him. He is going to seemingly change overnight and ignore all healthy ways of coping and go straight into this maniacal version of himself. 

They are about to put us through a Sydcarmy fight for the ages after Carmy does his whole partnership shit. But when I tell you this is going to remind us of the most dramatic romances we read on our Kindles, I mean it. Imagine this trope as one of those whole ass agreement list things that one or both of the romance leads (in a friends to lovers, especially) have. The agreement is done when the friends have an insane, amazing friendship and there’s more there, obviously, but they’re afraid to admit it. Sometimes they truly don’t even know that they like each other! In the case of Carmy, he is so avoidant of all of his feelings, he doesn’t even allow himself to think he likes her in this way. And even if he does recognize it, he certainly doesn’t know how to properly channel that into a romantic relationship with Sydney but he is 100% cognizant of the fact that he doesn’t want to lose her. That he CANNOT lose her. This agreement is done under the guide of a professional work agreement, but what he is proposing sounds more initamiate this just a work agreement. I honestly think it’s going to be jarring because on one hand Carmy believes this will lead to a star, but on the other hand what he’s trying to do starts to look and sound more like a non-platonic relationship.  

There is going to be a DREAM sequence that will make sydcarmy shippers happy. I just have this feeling or maybe this is me in delululand. Look. There were one too many damn dream sequence jokes for me to not take it seriously. I’m always a big believer that dream sequences should go big or go home; in fact, I’m trying to go through all of the dream sequences I’ve watched before in my head right now. I can’t think of one that did not involve kissing OR the wake-up-right-before-they-kiss moment at least. Think back to last month’s Polin (Bridgerton). I hope we get the kiss but I’ll even take the latter. BUT I’m going to go big and say that this may not even be a all heated and sexy dream. Um. What if it’s a Sydcarmy wedding!!!  

Syd and Carmy will sit next to each other at the funeral. There will be some comforting hand holding that is going to put us in a chokehold. I think Syd cries and Carmy comforts her. 

Ya know how Carmy helped Claire move whatever the hell furniture last season? Yeah, we’re gonna see a parallel of the moving thing when he helps Syd. We’re gonna get a Sydcarmy moment inside Sydney’s apartment and they’re going to talk about the future. This will be a great scene and will be use in all the future edits for sureee. Fantasyland me wants Carmy to say some shit like, “Syd, I don’t even know why you didn’t just move in with me?” “Carmy, use your head. You have one bedroom ? ? ?” “I would’ve taken the couch, nbd.”

Carmy sees Syd’s tattoos. I hope!! Perhaps this is in the dream sequence? Or maybe they have an actual conversation. Carmy tells Syd what one of his tattoos means. She does the same. But, forreal, this is a headcanon for me. 

To end the season, Syd and Carmy forreal do something that makes it hard to deny they are 100% in the platonic love category. They kiss and there is a conversation that rivals the under the table scene. Richie is the one who helps them get to this point. 

Sydney makes the decision to step away from Carmy a bit. Does she go to Ever? God, I hope not. But I think her health problems are going to be crazier (PLEASE STORER do not make her sick!!! I beg you!) and she can’t deal with Carmy’s shit any longer. I honestly think we’re going to see the season span months and the angst will be rough. Hopefully it’s one of those, “Three Months Later” things so we don’t actually have to see it. LOL Just get me to the end. 

Carmy is about to piss everyone off. I think we’re going to see Tina, Natalie, Richie, Sweeps, even Pete get into it with him. 

There will be a good number of flashbacks this season:

*Mikey in his last few months, weeks, and/or days leading up to his death 

*But also we’ll see some fun, sweet memories involving Mikey. Moments with Richie, Nat, and Carmy.

*Carmy as a chef before The Beef/The Bear. I’m so looking forward to these! 

*We are finally going to see Syd’s mom in flashbacks! 

Emanuael and Carmy meet. Syd’s dad will not like Carmy. He’s not gonna be impressed at all. They are going to talk and Carmy is going to do everything in his power to convince Emanuel he will be better for Syd and that she’s everything to him. Emanuel is going to give him some advice to win over Sydney. 

Richie is going to start dating and at least semi-successful. I think his redemption arc is still happening and specifically related to his relationships. Not gonna lie, I do actually like the idea of Jess and Richie and so I’m going to keep that in the mix and say Richie is the one who sets up Syd with the Ever guy. Richie will attend Tiff and Frank’s wedding. 

Syd and Marcus grow so much closer. Syd is going to serve as a supporting, loving friend to Marcus. They’re going to bond over the dead mom club. It’s going to be wonderful to see their friendship.

Donna is there for Nat. Perhaps she goes into labor and Donna is there to ease her nerves. It’s a wild moment for sure but a pretty poignant one. 

Luca. Dude. I don’t even know. I LOVE his character. I want him to, like, I’d love for him and Marcus to hook up. That would be the absolute best. Hell, I’d really love for Luca to be Sydney and starting flirting with her and with get to see jealous!Carmy! (PLEASE!) but I’ll settle for some flashback scenes. I guessss. Perhaps Luca comes help out at The Bear? I’d love that.

I’ve seen a lot of people say that The Bear will struggle greatly and close. I cannot deal with this LOL. I don’t want this to happen so I’m not going to predict it, but I think there will be some struggling. 

Tina’s story is gonna be emotional. Her journey into the kitchen is going to be one that happens because she desperately needs a job. We’re going to see her with Luis’ father. We are going to see her with Mikey. We’re going to see that she has always been bright and so capable. 

Claire. Man. I don’t like that she is even in this season, but I appreciate a great story and don’t think we can fully wrap this whole thing up if the walk-in fridge breakup was it. Fak is starting to get on my last nerves with his matchmaking shit lol but I think we will see Claire in at least a slightly different and enhanced light. Chris Storer is intentional in everything he does and I don’t believe for one second this doctor can be so surface level. Carmy may have this guilt eating him up and his trauma keeping him from  wanting anything good, but ultimately Carmy doesn’t actually want her. She’s meant to represent this nice person and serve merely as (physical) relief. But I don’t even know. I don’t think she and Carmy are endgame at all. I want Claire to tell Fak to stop his nonsense. I want her to understand her worth and not go back to Carmy after he said all of this shit about her (and not just because I love Sydcarmy but because I’m for the girlies knowing their worth!). 

What I would really love to happen is Claire cursing Carmy tf out. I’d love for Claire and Syd to have a one-on-one conversation and Sydney says something that exposes how she feels about Carmy to Claire. Awkwardness ensues. 

Okay. Damn. I started typing and I couldn’t stop. It was as if I was ten years old again and typing my predictions for the upcoming Harry Potter book. Dang. Take me back to those days! Those prediction threads were unreal. Tell me your predictions!

I know you've gotten a bunch of asks like this. But, you've made me pay attention to and try to analyse colours in the stuff I watch. And I feel like it makes me enjoy media less and more at the same time. But I think it's good. Like, it makes it impossible to really watch something passively. Even if I'm kinda bored by the plot I'll be like "ooh, he's wearing a red shirt, what could that mean". I think we should all engage in media in a kinda analysis way. I think it makes us think more and also makes it more fun. So, yeah, thanks, I guess. :)

Anon, I don't get asks like this. I usually get tags like, "PETTY RUINED MY LIFE! I HATE THEM!" but it's very much the same energy, and I appreciate it.

I completely understand what you mean about being entertained by the tiny details even if the plot is lacking (Cutie Pie, I love you, but you know that plot could've been wrapped up in six episodes), but I hope that you grow to enjoy shows MORE rather than simulateously liking them less and more due to not being able to watch them passively.

I believe it allows me to like shows more because I can see if my theories based on the colors and background noise are legit.

Which is why I'm going to be adamant that The Eighth Sense is going to end happily.

I saw today on Instagram somebody questioning why the shower scene was filtered red.

But in my mind, it seemed like an easy color choice to show desire mostly when Jae Won is naturally dark

And since Ji Hyun is the lighter one of them

It's only March and it scares me that people are already freaking out about FK's partnership 🫠 I was thinking that the lack of promotions right now aren't a bad thing? Actually the opposite? They had the fanmeet in Brazil, they'll have another one in Rome, both of those sold out their tickets. They have one in Manila as well, they've been flying a lot. Isn't it good that they're at least having a bit of time to rest? Perhaps next year's promos will depend on how well the new series will do. But seeing all this comments makes me anxious 😰 I think FK are so loved and they have a good fanbase, they seem to still be very happy together and interested in doing more things as a duo? Or do you think not really?? Have I been delusional in thinking that them resting is good 😭😭😭😭 especially now that we know First is taking on a new degree, like you said.. 😕😕

I’m certainly not worried about it. I don’t like that they make them do those events anyway. The sponsorships I don’t mind so much because that’s money in FK’s pockets, but the fan meets every weekend has always seemed a bit much to me.

My surprise comes more from the fact that GMMTV decided not to milk them like a cash cow after Only Friends, but I’m grateful for it. And aside from the month where they were both literally on vacation, I feel like they’ve actually been pretty active—at least for them.

I think the problem stems from people having different ideas of how much access they should be allowed to have with their faves. This is especially evident over on Twitter, which is why I don’t spend too much time there. I remember during FK’s month-long break, a lot of the fans were literally throwing a hissy fit. There was a whole campaign where they were tagging GMMTV and accusing them of negligence for not booking FK at events and like…they were resting???!

I know Twitter skews younger and a lot of them probably don’t understand what having a job entails and I also understand that eastern fandoms have always allowed fans more access to actors than I’m used to as an American, but things like that still rub me the wrong way. These boys don’t get weekends or holidays off. Even when they’re not working, if they’re out in public, they always have to be in work-mode. Let them go off the grid when they want to.

Anyway, all that to say that I agree with you. My comment about them maybe taking on more individual roles next year had nothing to do with me questioning whether they wanted to keep working together or whether they would have the opportunities to do so. I just personally wouldn’t mind seeing them in other things, too. They are still two of the biggest actors at GMMTV and seem to be booked for events as often or even more often than bigger names like OffGun. They’re just quiet on social media because they’re introverts. I’ve seen nothing to suggest they want to stop working together. In fact, all evidence seems to suggest that they would be really sad to have to work with anyone else 😂

So, a new anime series (an adaptation of a manga series) was just announced called, "Sakamoto Days." Let's take a look at its promo art:

Basically, we see someone who was a mafia/hitman/yakuza type of guy - who used to be very hot and fit, etc. that then settled down and got out of shape. Okay, cool. It's nice to see the MC being older and without the more stereotypical "hot bod" found in anime. A dude with a dad bod, nice. Cute, I love it. It's an action-comedy, but I can already tell from this promo, the premise, and the trailer I saw that the male character is a character first and foremost, with the character's weight gain being a part of the larger concept of having settled down and what not.

I wish female characters could get this treatment. There are some fat and overweight female characters in anime that are written well, but those usually tend to be secondary or minor characters:

All of these characters exist as characters first, with their own interests and personalities, and their weight is a secondary aspect to their characterization as a whole. So, we have a number of secondary and minor female characters that can exist like this, but when I think about female main characters who are fat, overweight, etc. within the anime sphere...all I got is this:

A series that is a comedy like Sakamoto Days, but it also happens to be an ecchi series and that changes everything. From this promo alone, we can tell that the focus is being placed on the female eating and on her weight gain first and foremost. The ecchi tag also indicates, to me anyway, that a fetishistic lens is the one that is primarily going to be used for the series.

I know issues like these ones with male characters being allowed to exist as characters who are fat, rather than as fat characters who are then not taken as seriously or who are fetishized (female characters) is a problem in all media around the world...and I know that Japanese media like anime (especially) even acknowledging characters of different weights and shapes is still very new in and of itself...but it is also just tiring. In many other medias around the world there has been some shifts and some improvements in these areas, so it's just kinda sigh worthy to see that anime is still only just reaching this stage/level of representation.

It's an interesting experience for me, a reminder of how my taste and wants in media have changed so much from when I was a pre-teen and teen who actively sought out anime back then, because it was so different and unique and filled a gap in what I was looking for media-wise, that American media at that time wasn't filling. But, now it almost feels like the roles have reversed and the stagnation and inability to fill the gaps with difference and uniqueness is anime for me, while American and other Western forms of media seem to be more unique, different, and progressive/forward moving/changing.

There are always exceptions to the above though, and I absolutely LOVE when a good anime comes out that reminds me of why I used to love the medium so much when I was younger. That's always so refreshing and nice, but becoming increasingly harder and harder to find.

Hello, I hope im not bothering you, but I can't help and ask. I know you said you had thoughts and to wait the end of the season, but not gonna lie, I feel suckered punched. I tried not to have hope, but still after all the promos ( I know most of them weren't official, but still...) and I wanted to know your opinion/feeling about it all. Im also using this ask to tell you that your posts and tags make me smile a lot, so I also wanted to thank you for that it gave me company in this fandom even thought I dont dare and reach out except now...

Okay, darling, first of all, thank you, I'm happy I can be a positive presence in the fandom for you. Second, I'm gonna be as diplomatic as I can here. One, I think some reactions the fandom has don't need to reach the people they are about, and it is shitty to put an actor in that type of position, even more when not something he said. Second, I think Ryan proved why he was in pr jail, because, well, they are in damage control mode, because considering the way queerbaiting is leading people to believe there will be a romantic relationship when that was never the plan, and like it or not, the things Ryan said paired with the new things that have been said, could be read as queerbaiting. Please notice I said could. We are dealing with an ongoing story, so anything is a possibility. Buddie is in the middle. I think contextually they make sense together, but I also think that they wrote themselves into a corner. I made a whole post about that you can read all my thoughts here, but the short version is that the stakes are too high. They can't not know the potential love story they have on their hands, BUT the potential they have of being one of the best slowburns in television makes it that much harder to actually write that payoff if there wasn't a plan in place and they accidentally did that by playing off of Oliver and Ryan's chemistry. They did establish Buck and Eddie as family, and yes, their bond is stronger than one would expect of two best friends, but while I think it would be unsatisfying, leaning into the family angle without making it romantic will always be a possibility. One of the logistical problems with getting Buck and Eddie together is that, unlike bathena and madney, they work together, so you either need to get one of them out of the 118 or you need to acknowledge their relationship every episode they are both in, and that is complicated in a show with 7 main characters. There's also the issue that the foundation they have laid out for buddie doesn't really allow for them to use the usual tricks to keep slowburns interesting because most shows tend to have issues with slowburns once the tension is resolved, and the build-up with buddie is high. Whether the build-up was intentional or not, you can recontextualize the show to make it seem like this has been building, it's what allowed me to write 4k words on how Eddie has been in love with Buck since 2x04 just by playing with the perspective around them. And you can very easily do the same with Buck. That kind of expectation is not good since it's not the buddie show. The show is not only about Buck and Eddie, but to put buddie in situations as an established couple could make the show about them because, since they are always together, there will be an expectation around showing them being a couple all of the time that they might not know how to work with because there isn't really another television couple that would fit in their category. Even if we compare them to shows like castle, the mentalist, bones, the couple are the main characters, so it's okay if the couple is taking away from the rest of the show, and honestly, all 3 of those shows kinda tanked their own build-up for a while there. And Buck and Eddie literally have a legal document binding them together, for all intents and purposes they have a child together, and they are best friends, so there's this expectation around them if they ever get to be a couple that they will be a good couple. You can't have them fumbling around much in the way other slowburns do because they are solid. So there's also the issue of keeping them interesting because television writers don't like letting couples have peace.

Sure there are issues you can place on buddie to "spice things up" if they think they got boring resolving the tension, like playing with the sexuality angle, or the abandonment issues Buck, Eddie, and even Chris have, but they are not things you can really drag out. They work in the immediate aftermath of them getting together, but then they would have to get creative and they probably don't know how to get there. But why am I talking about the logistics of the couple in the big picture? Well, I think Ryan has been playing Eddie as at least a little bit in love with Buck the whole time he's been playing Eddie, my main argument for that is that he has the same reactions for Buck that he had for Shannon (post on that here), so Ryan could very much just gotten comfortable and said his interpretation of Eddie's feelings for Buck without it being something he was explicitly told. Both Ryan and Oliver said Buck and Eddie are getting closer this season, so "trying to give the people what they want" could very much just be what Ryan himself is trying to do with the text he's being given. It could be that the marketing team didn't think the fans would react to what he said like that and that's why he was allowed to say it. They could be backtracking because Buck and Eddie are getting together and what Ryan said would be a spoiler. Or they could be baiting us to raise the ratings. Every angle here is possible. We only watched one episode of the season so far. We don't know where the story is going yet. It could be going anywhere. It could be going somewhere. Maybe by the end of the season, we will have something explicitly canon on buddie. Maybe they fucked up and the people calling queerbaiting will be somewhat justified because, honestly, I'm getting teen wolf cons flashbacks here. I do think it's fucked up that people are expecting Oliver to deal with something Ryan said. I do think emotions are running high because of many things that happened in the past 2 weeks. I don't think it is fair to scream queerbaiting yet. But I do unfortunately think we might get there if they keep raising the stakes between Buck and Eddie on the show with no payoff while letting Ryan say things like the things he's been saying. For me, the important thing to remember is that the story is in the middle, we don't know where the show is gonna take Buck and Eddie individually and together, so I think everyone needs to take a breath and stop acting like the show already ended and wait to see where it's gonna go.

the njpw/aew partnership has always felt incredibly unbalanced. FTR didn’t defend or talk about the IWGP tag belts and skipped out on WTL, Kenny (as much as I love the dude) has done 0 with the US belt, AEW did nothing to promote Willow being part of the Strong Tournament. Desperado set a match with Mox and that didn’t get mentioned. They didn’t even talk about Dominion until after it happened. New Japan social media and commentary make a big effort to keep continuity and talk about things going on in their partner promotions.

Even with Takeshita. DDT has tweeted about the heel turn, their wrestlers have mentioned it, I cannot remember the last time DDT was even mentioned on the show

I get that All Together Again and the Road Tour means 90% of their roster is booked up and it would be a struggle to appear live. But a build to a show doesn’t need to be done 2 weeks before. This is something we should have had going since tickets went on sale. Or at the very least, ask them to film backstage promos to send in, not just play the promotional videos and press conferences that New Japan did themselves.

FTR and Kenny were the first people I thought of when Aussie Open had to relinquish the IWGP and Strong tag titles even though Mark would only be out 6 weeks. And Kevin Kelly explained at a later date that if the Dominion match hadn't been set they could have just kept the titles which, okay, fine. But that doesn't change that FTR and Kenny just sat/are just sitting on their respective titles. Also, I was Big Mad when Kenny defended the US title against Jeff Cobb on Dynamite and not a few weeks later at Capital Collision. Like, that's an NJPW belt, my guy. Kenny by God Omega coulda shoulda woulda brought soooooo many more eyes to Capital Collision/NJPW. (And I thought he would have known better, too? That was his home for years?)

But you hit the nail on the head—it's an unbalanced relationship and I frankly don't know what NJPW is getting out of it? Forbidden Door 2 is probably gonna be another routing of their talent like the first FD was.

And like you said, there's absolutely ways to work around people not being able to come to America in order to build a feud/to a PPV. But like I said to that anon, David Finlay been around and available. AEW had the time to meaningfully address the long, long history between him and BOTH Jay and Juice. Juice literally turned on Finlay to join Bullet Club and now Finlay is the leader and you're just gonna ignore that?! And Jay's been exiled from NJPW but he's still out here acting like he's in Bullet Club?! As if (in storyline) Finlay would just allow that happen?! PLEASE. Make it make sense.

Editing to add: there's still a chance to meaningfully introduce the White/Finlay feud AT Forbidden Door. As I said, Jay's been kayfabe exiled from NJPW (and working with NJPW talent, I believe?), so he really SHOULD NOT be anywhere near Toronto on June 25th if they're gonna uphold that. But he could show up because it's also an AEW event. And then Finlay could show up and be like, "Wtf do you think you're doing?" And boom, there you go. I HOPE that happens, genuinely. If not... I will fly to Florida just to smack Tony Khan.

Hello Guardian fandom, we’re thrilled to announce the Red Pocket Prompts Fest in celebration of Lunar New Year 2023!

Like red pockets (also called red envelopes or red packets) given out during the new year, weddings, and other special occasions, this fest is a way for us share the wealth in the currency of fandom — fanworks and community!

The event runs from the first day of the Gregorian calendar, through Lunar New Year to the end of the first lunar month (ie. Jan 1, 2023 to Feb 19, 2023).

While the Prompt Fest is centred on the Guardian novel by Priest and the drama adaptation, fanworks in all fandoms generally considered "Guardian-related" are welcome, including RPF, Weilan derivative fandoms (ie. based on other works by Bai Yu or Zhu Yilong) as well as any AUs and crossovers!

How do I participate?

You can participate by either submitting or claiming a prompt, or both. You may submit and/or claim as many prompts as you like (though we do ask that you only claim a maximum of three secret prompts) — after all, it's all about sharing the wealth!

There are no restrictions on any of these parameters, as long as the fanwork responds appropriately to the prompt and is properly tagged. Drabbles, sketches and doodles are also very much welcome! The only rule is that fanworks that promote hate or violence against a real world group or individual will not be allowed.

Okay, I'm ready to jump in. But what are these "secret prompts"?

In addition to prompts from all members of fandom which are always visible, the mods have also put together 24 secret/hidden prompts to give you the full red pocket experience — you won't know what's in these "envelopes" until you "open" them! Secret prompts which have been claimed will be revealed every Sunday, starting January 1st — so remember to check back on the prompt you claimed which will have been edited by then.

The 24 secret prompts have been labelled based on the 24 solar terms of the Chinese calendar (as the term implies, each term is based on the movement of the sun), and you can think of these as the "envelopes". Inside each is three prompts vaguely based on the solar term. You may create your work based on any one (or more) of the prompts and you can interpret them as liberally as you like. In order to allow for the greatest flexibility, all prompts avoids nsfw content, specific pairings or characters, and common triggers. We encourage you to be as creative as you want, and most importantly, have fun!

Is there a limit on how many people can claim a single prompt?

Nope! You can even claim a secret prompt after it has been revealed, though of course you won't be getting the surprise of "opening" the envelope.

Are there any rules for what kind of prompts I can submit?

You can submit any prompts you want — for any Guardian-related fandom(s), crossovers and fusions with other non-Guardian fandoms (though these would still be required to relate to a Guardian-related fandom in some way), rating (including M & E), medium, content, etc. It can be as general or as specific as you like, ranging from a single word or theme, to a specific scenario you would like to see.

Like for fills, the only rule is that your prompt should not promote hate or violence towards any real world group or individual.

Is there a deadline for submitting prompts or works?

Sign-ups for submitting prompts will be open from Jan 1, 2023 to Feb 19, 2023. While we encourage you to submit your works during this time as well as part of the Lunar New Year celebrations, the collection will remain open after the event so you may continue to post your works.

His fans are so funny to me cause we watched them for a year and a half saying ‘he gets invited but he doesn’t go bc these things are not important to him, he would rather go to the theater. he’s an ACTOR, he’s not in it for the fame unlike the others. he’s too booked to be attending events.’ Then the wimbledon pics dropped and boom, radio silence. And now that he’s everywhere to the point of being overexposed, his fans are too happy to be fed to realize their hypocrisy. Bc the truth is that he does like fame, he does like the clout of being associated with famous people, he does want to campaign hard to win nominations. He isn’t above any of it like the rest. The only reason why he didn’t do it before is bc he didn’t think he could benefit from it. People like pretending that he was mistreated like Simone but we have heard from different people how he was the most respected on set. He was allowed to go do a play instead of promo and film multiple projects during S3 shoot not bc there was not enough for him to do but bc he had enough clout that he could go do other things that would benefit him more. Isn’t it very telling that during S2 promo, he chose to do only solo promo that would benefit him and his play when he was working with someone who wasn’t very popular and now that he’s working with famous people, he has no problem tagging along with them everywhere. This is someone who often visits his fan pages and takes pics from them so he does like the attention. I’ve always believed that the 4 times he’s mentioned Simone on insta was to make his fans happy and not for her and now that he has bigger projects, he doesn’t have to ever mention her at all again. I don’t think he mistreated Simone on set but he was absolutely in a position to help her out more on set and during promo the way Leonardo DiCaprio is using his position to hype Lily Gladstone or even how Matt is hyping him up now. But he preferred to only focus on himself and build his profile instead of working as a team. It will always rub me the wrong way how he always brought up cc when someone mentioned Simone. His fans will say he’s just supportive but he could have also mentioned nc and others then if he was just trying to be nice. The truth is that he never saw her as his leading lady, he never thought of them as a team, he was the lead and they were both his love interest. That nomination post will always bother me. The way he tagged both Simone and cc as the ducks, how he posted a bts pic of kissing cc but only a still with Simone. I’m very happy Simone doesn’t associate with him. She deserves better coworkers who will treat as an equal and will want to hype her up.

That quote from Ewan about speaking Valyrian in the council meeting is really interesting. I felt so bad for Aegon during that part, I was glad that the council members couldn’t tell how bad his Valyrian was. 

I found the episode kind of disappointing. I like conversations between characters, but I didn’t care very much about the conversations that were happening in this episode. 

My favorite scene was probably the one between Cole and Alicent when he was talking about what the battle was like and why he voted for Aemond as regent. Followed by poor Aegon calling out for Mummy. I think the show is very much going in a direction with Alicent and her children, her relationships with them and their relationships with each other, is that they can’t connect. They want to love each other but it’s just not functioning. Aegon speaking right after she leaves, the way they just missed each other. Not just lack of communication between all of them, but the lack of ability to communicate with each other. And all the times they choose not to, like Aemond not telling anyone that killing Lucerys was an accident.

I like the way that highlights the Aemond/Helaena scene. Alicent suspects what Aemond did. Cole and Aegon know what Aemond did. Helaena also knows. But she’s the only one who speaks to him about it. 

There was a fair amount of Helaegon in this episode. I thought Helaena watching them carry Aegon through the halls to his room was fairly shippy, relative to what we normally get for these two. Her words to Aemond definitely also had recrimination vibes, though at the same time you can see she hasn’t “turned” on him the same way Alicent has, so to speak, whether she approves or not.

Book spoilers and show spoilers; I still haven’t read the book but I know that in the book, Helaena and Aegon already had another son, Maelor. (Right? Maelor?) Maelor’s existence totally changes Aemond’s position as regent (from a position of believing Aegon will never recover). I believe Condal or whoever has said that Maelor will exist. There are theories about how that might happen, if Helaena’s not already pregnant. But if she is already pregnant, Aemond is not going to be happy about her giving birth to a son. That’s going to be awkward and I’m not looking forward to it.

Did… did we just get canon Daemon/Alyssa? Sort of? After all the time spent wondering if the mystery woman in the vision was Rhaenyra, Aemma or even Helaena? And arguing over whether Daemon loves Rhaenyra or Viserys more? And discussing both Aegon’s and Aemond’s Oedipal issues?

… not that I’m complaining. I’m always down for a bit of momson, lol.

It was pretty funny, after all the talking we do on here about Aegon/Alicent and Aemond/Alicent,, and then there’s a scene of a mother and son having dream sex and it’s Daemon, lmao. And yeah, all the speculation about who that woman was. I thought for sure it would be Aemma. This was so much better. 

In a way, it doesn’t do much for me, because he doesn’t remember her and it was meant to be metaphorical, and probably also partly included for humor and shock value. It may have even been fed to him. Is Alys purposefully torturing him with these visions? But it was nice to look at and I enjoyed it a lot, especially Daemon’s reaction. I’ve also enjoyed watching the reviewers squirm. They’ve so used to the other incest, but this got them. 

I’m still digesting the Daemon/Rhaenyra stuff. I love Rhaenyra’s reactions, every time Daemon is mentioned, and every time she has to speak about him. You can see all of the love/uncertainty/fear that’s there. I thought her message about wanting to continue their conversation was perfect. On Daemon’s side, I feel like I’ve just got to wait and see how it plays out. Daemon is not doing what Rhaenyra wants and is not doing the right thing, but I think his vision of the future is still him and Rhaenyra together.

pleasepleaseplease don't control my characters. 'godmodding' has been the bane of my existence since middle school. I do what I can to make sure our interactions (especially violent ones) are even while still being in character. I have noticed, though, that some of my characters are awfully inclined to back down if conversation swings towards violence. I'm not afraid to rp fights, but I ask that we plot how it will end beforehand, so I can know what direction to head for.

I like to start character interactions with first meetings. It gives us the chance to get to know each other while our characters do.

Crossovers: Mostly good with them! Other characters in far cry is great. Depending on the fandom I might be willing to build an AU to interact. idk, hasn't come up yet! I will say, though, that my anime phase ended before high school. I've got nothing against it, I just don't like it myself anymore. I probably won't interact with anime characters, oc or canon.

I match length (and often, more) but I don't expect others to. Life is busy, you can't always write out a long reply. As long as your response as some kind of action or sentence to be responded to, don't worry about it!

Questions, quick asks, one-liners and such are always open! I prefer longer interactions, but these can be really fun too!

hello there! first of all i wanna thank you for your translations of the side stories! we get so little about b komachi and I found it really fascinating to see that some of the lyrics from idol seem to have been lifted from 45510 especifically. ( could be mistaken, haha)

but in any case, there's a particular outfit of Ai's that you tag as beautiful dreamer, at first I had only seen this outfit in cosplay websites and I was skeptical of it even being anything more than an effort to sell more costumes. I was wondering if you knew what official art it is from? I'd love to see the original picture, cuz as hard as I try I don't seem to be able to find it!

ANON THIS WAS SUCH A LOVELY ASK TO WAKE UP TO, THANK U SO MUCH 🥺 Honestly it has been years since I actively took part in a Big Fandom enough to contribute meta so knowing that people are enjoying reading my thoughts about this silly little series is kind of mindblowing to me lol. Ai's neurodivergence and the way it factors into the way she navigates the world is suuuuuuuch a key foundational part of understanding her (at least imo) so it makes me glad to see people are vibing with me talking about it so explicitly.

You are correct, tho! IDOL's lyrics are directly based on 45510 and parts of Ai's dialogue scattered around the first volume of the manga - it's always kind of a surprise when I go back through it and I'm like oh my god right, yosasobi just came for the THROAT with some of these lines!!! I've been working on my own TL of 45510 just to keep myself occupied and I've been having a lot of fun trying to make my translations of those lines actually scan to the appropriate lines of IDOL hehehe.

To answer your question tho! That particular Ai design is an official alt outfit/AU design for the Lies and Ai (展 嘘とアイ) exhibition and collab cafe that was held in Japan!

As you can see, everyone got a cute, mahou shoujo inspired look as a tie in.

You can read a little more information about it in this news article but it was basically a little art installation based around Oshi no Ko where certain iconic scenes and outfits from the anime's first episode were recreated for folks to see and a collab cafe with character-themed foods was also hosted. If you'd like to get an idea of what the exhibition looks like, happyuchannel (who does a lot of videos on OnK events in Japan!) has a video about their visit where they show off the parts they were allowed to photograph and some of the merch they got.

The reason I tag this as 'Beautiful Dreamer' is because I run a magical girl AU roleplay called Beautiful Dreamer over on Dreamwidth and Ai is one of the characters I play there! By total coincidence, this art dropped like the day after I decided to play her there and had to work out a mahou look for her and then I guess the universe rewarded me for good decision making LOL

("Claire is this a transparent ploy to get people to come over to Dreamwidth and play in your mahou game?" Of Course It Is)

Unfortunately there aren't any full/high quality images of the art anywhere that I know if since it exists just for the collab cafe but I imagine that when an art book specific to the anime inevitably drops, we'll get full spreads of a lot of the collab cafe/promo art.
