One time in 10th grade the teacher ordered pizza for the class and for some GOD FORSAKEN REASON thought Hawaiian pizza was a good idea. So we had a whole ass Hawaiian pizza that no one wanted to eat. But not me. I was the one of two people in that class who ate that pizza. Why? Because I don’t give a shit about pineapple on pizza because there are worse pizza crimes to be committed, but everyone was staring at me like I had killed and eating a fucking rabbit in the middle of the class. And I was three slices in before someone asked, “how are you eating that?” And I just told them I don’t fucking care about pineapple on pizza and that if he didn’t like it he could just pick off the pineapple. And it was like, his fucking brain kicked in and was like, “shit, you *can* take off the toppings” so people started eating the pizza without the pineapple. And I just like pineapple so I asked if I could eat their pineapple if they were going to throw it away and I go more horrified looks like my guy, it’s no longer on the pizza. I do not want to waste the food. This class will stink for the next few days if we do not consume the fruit. And this seemed to be a pretty divisive subject.

Corals Monthly Update #3
HOHOHO!! FIRST BLOG POST OF 2023 AND I’M NEARLY 2 WEEKS LATE!!! Super sorry about the long wait! I’ve had tests recently and only got off of school like a few days ago haha! So! Welcome back to my monthly update on what I get up to in my life! Now, before we get into January, I, for the final time, have to tap back into the previous month. Curse past me for thinking the 21st was a good day to start doing these!!! ANYHOW! The rest of December and early January were a BLAST! But lemmie talk about what happened after I made the last update. CHRISTMAS!! I had a great time with my family and I got a bunch of fluffy things cuz that’s apparently the easiest thing to get me now. We also had dinner on Christmas day with my Grandparents like every year. Over-all that day was very fun! I even got drunk playing Minecraft which was funny for everyone in VC. The next few days weren’t anything exciting, however my brother Finn had a bunch of his friends over for his birthday which was chaotic. But the excitement picks back up on the 28th! BECAUSE SKYE AND VI CAME OVER FOR NEW YEARS!! We’ve been planning this since like, June, so it was awesome seeing them again! We did all kinds of stuff from shopping to playing some awesome games! (I am now chronically addicted to Ultra Kill thanks guys)
We even did some baking! Here is our glorious creation I dubbed, “The Jimothy”.
Tumblr media
Overall the rest of December was awesome! I’m glad I got to celebrate New Years with my besties! Overall, I’ll give it a 10/10! Best way to end 2022 >:D Here’s a few more misc photos hehehhehe
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
NOW! FOR JANUARY!! January started off still vibing with the guys. However they would then go home on the 4th which sucks. But before that, both Skye and I spent a lot of money on consoles that are almost as old as ourselves. They bought a fucking PS Vita and I got a motherfucking Wii. We both had fun with em and I even helped Skye homebrew their Vita since I wanted to put PebbleCD on it (I failed but shut uuup) But yea, sadly the guys had to go and it sucked! But I still had a great time. There’s a bit of a gap here right up until the 12th, where finally, the big event happened. CAREY IN THE HOUSE WENT LIVE!! I had finished it a few days prior but figured I’d build up hype by posting it on that Friday. AND IT SURE WORKED! The video blew up faster than any of my videos before it! I am so happy the response has been overwhelmingly positive. I also love how the only main complaint that was common amongst people was that Careys exaggerated accent was annoying which, yea can’t argue against. For anyone wishing for more CITH content, I did a behind the scenes mega thread over on my twitter if you wanna have a deeper look into the production! I’ll even link it here:  https://twitter.com/Carey_Black_/status/1619731723352444928 Now, to move onto why it took me forever to make an update. My mock exams.. BUT BEFORE THAT!! THERE’S ALSO THE FACT THAT MR WULF AND I WERE ABLE TO ARCHIVE THE ORIGINAL EDDSWORLD BANG BOOM SPLAT PROJECT FILE!!
Tumblr media
This all started because Wulf wanted to edit the credits for his arcade BBS build since I was helping him out and since I said SWF modding is hard he just casually asked Psycosis and after seeing his WIP cabinet, gave Wulf the FLA! So a current “BBS arcade version” is in the works by yours truly thanks to both the generosity of Psycosis and the fact that Mr Wulf is a fucking mad man who could stop global warming in a month if he wanted to LOL! Here’s Wulfs finished Cabinet btw!:  https://twitter.com/MrWulfOfficial/status/1622295302685315073 But yea, for real. My mock exams were a pain! For those outside of Ireland or have a different name for em, Mock exams are, well, exams that act like a practice run for your finals. They’re always harder than the actual finals and are usually graded stricter too! Why? Who knows! The Irish education system is a joke. I feel like I did somewhat ok in them anyway? Some were definitely worse than others but overall it was more of an inconvenience. I did get this really cool art piece out of it however.
Tumblr media
Exams would later spill over into February and like I said at the start, I finished and got off school a few days ago. Overall, this month was about a 7/10. It was pretty good, especially in the Eddsworld department, but mocks and other personal tid bits I didn’t mention here dragged it down for me. Since February seems to be mostly me being off school, I hope this month will be better haha! Only time will tell! Thank you for reading! And I hope to see you next month!! (Hopefully on time too haha!)

Time: “Run Away to You” Part 6
Tumblr media
“You’d think a year apart would be enough for me to fall out of love with you. I think I’d still love you even if we spent fifty years apart from each other.”
Pairing: Min Yoongi x Former Actress!Reader
Word Count: 2.0K
Genre: Angst + Fluff (the end is here, and I’m emotional)
Series Masterlist: Run Away to You
Premise: You ran away from your acting career one year ago, disappearing from the spotlight without a trace. No one from your past life knew where to find you. On the anniversary of your disappearance, your carefully constructed reality is shattered.
Part 5 // Epilogue
---
Yoongi’s arm was draped over your waist, his form curled against yours. His even breathing against your neck signaled to you that he was still asleep, so you gently shuffled toward the edge of the bed, trying not to wake him. Yoongi’s arm fell onto the now empty spot beside him, but he didn’t stir.
You threw on Yoongi’s oversized sweatshirt from the day before to save yourself from the draft in the apartment, tiptoeing out of the room as Yoongi slept. You looked back at him before you shut the door to the bedroom. His dark hair was messy, pale skin warming in the early morning sunshine. You heart seemed to swell with affection at the sight.
You looked in several kitchen cabinets in the unfamiliar apartment before finally finding a bag of coffee grounds. You meditatively went through the steps of boiling water on the stove and measuring out the grounds.
You were just pressing the coffee grounds down in the French press when you felt a pair of arms wrap around you from behind, Yoongi’s lips landing on the space between your neck and the collar of his sweatshirt. You sighed at the feeling, leaning back against his chest.
“Good morning,” he hummed against your ear, his voice raspy with sleep.
“Good morning, I’m making coffee,” you said, slightly flustered as Yoongi continued to move his mouth against your neck. He chuckled; you felt the sound vibrate in his chest against you.
“I can see that,” he teased. You spun around, his hands moving to your back to accommodate your new position.
“Here I am, trying to be nice and make you coffee before you wake up, and this is the thanks I get?” you quirked an eyebrow at Yoongi. He scrunched his nose trying not to smile at you teasing him back, but the corners of his lips quickly turned up in a grin.
“You’re right, thank you,” Yoongi kissed your forehead, pulling away from you in search of two mugs to pour the now-finished coffee into.
“What is your schedule like today?” you asked as he handed you the hot mug, his fingers brushing against yours.
“I have rehearsals for an upcoming performance most of the morning, and then I was planning on working in the studio for a while. You could work in there with me, if you’d like. On your book or something.” You nodded absentmindedly in agreement while you sipped your coffee.
“That’s a good idea, actually. I’m feeling rather inspired today,” you said with a coy smile, Yoongi’s face blushing as you looked at him.
“You remember how to get there?” Yoongi asked, placing his mug on the counter next to him.
“Yes, of course.”
“I’ll see you later, then? I better get going so I can get ready before the boys have too many questions,” Yoongi scratched the back of his neck, looking sheepish.
“Right. Do you want this back?” you asked, pulling at the sweatshirt you had stolen from him that morning.
“No, keep it, it looks better on you,” Yoongi said, leaning forward to plant a sweet kiss to your lips before heading out the door. You couldn’t remember the last time you had felt so many butterflies in your stomach.
---
We’ve seen a few more pictures pop up, but they don’t clearly show your face, just you and Yoongi going into your building. Your name has come up a few times, but there still isn’t a definitive theory that it’s you. I’ll keep you updated. – Marianne
You read the text from Marianne, your sigh alerting Yoongi that something was wrong. He glanced over at you from his desk, giving you a curious look.
The two of you had fallen into a comfortable routine over the past week. He would leave your apartment early in the morning before his rehearsals and meetings for the day. You would meet him in his studio later, both of you working side-by-side on your projects. Per the label and Marianne’s instructions, you were still on lockdown, so the second half of your book was coming along nicely with how much time you had to devote to it.
But the clock that had begun ticking in your head since Marianne had given you your two-week deadline to figure out your next move was rapidly running out of time.
You were getting daily updates from Marianne, and, while you had hoped the rumors would die down after this past week of hiding, they seemed to keep stirring. Marianne had warned you yesterday that it might be time to get ahead of it.
“You need to talk to him, Y/N. We can’t make the next move unless you know for certain that he is on the same page as you. I know that you two have been in a bit of a whirlwind of being together again, but it has been a carefully constructed bubble,” Marianne warned.
“He told me he wasn’t going to let me go, Marianne. And I can’t let him go, either,” you said to her over the phone.
“Still, just talk to him, okay? I’ll handle the label, but I need you to do this for you.”
“Okay.”
Yoongi waited for you to explain your odd behavior, fully facing you now.
“Everything alright?” he asked.
“More pictures,” you explained. “This time they’re of both of us going into my building. Looks like it might be time to find a new place to live,” you tried to say the last part jokingly, but it came out strained.
“Let’s go for a walk,” Yoongi said, suddenly standing. He reached his hand out to you to pull you up. He intertwined your fingers together, holding your hand tightly as you made your way into the private courtyard outside of the building.
You walked for a bit in silence, trying to find the right words to say.
“Yoongi, I think we need to talk,” you said, breaking the silence. He stumbled a bit in surprise at your statement, his grip on your hand slackening enough for you to pull it from his grasp. He righted himself, frowning at your hand that was now firmly by your side in a fist. You needed a clear mind to talk to him, and your mind was never truly clear if you were touching him.
“Is this about the new photos?” he asked. You nodded.
“Marianne is starting to think it might be time to make a statement. Maybe activate my social media accounts again, post a video addressing the rumors, something like that. She wants to get ahead of this. The speculation doesn’t seem to be dying down, and it’ll look worse, for both of us, if it seems like we’re hiding my identity from your fans,” you explained to Yoongi, waiting for his reaction.
He stepped forward, searching your eyes.
“Do you want that? To make a statement?” he asked.
“Not particularly,” you admitted quietly.
“You can wait. You don’t have to make a decision right now that you’ll regret later,” Yoongi said, trying to mitigate your stress.
“I’m running out of time, Yoongi. The past week with you has been a dream, but I have to wake up. I can’t keep hiding in your apartment building, pretending like the photos will go away. It’ll be worse the longer I wait. The label has already said that you were with an old friend, but they’re putting pressure on me to come out and say that it’s me. It seems to only be a matter of time before it’s confirmed, anyway. Besides, they think that your fans will believe the story more if they know it’s a former actress you were with rather than someone random.”
“I know what the label thinks,” Yoongi snapped.
“Yoongi…” you started.
“No,” Yoongi stopped you, his tone serious. “I said I wasn’t letting you go, and I meant it. So, if that means protecting you and your secret, then I’ll do it. Whatever it takes.”
Yoongi placed a hand on your cheek, wiping away a stray tear that you didn’t know had fallen. You leaned into his touch, closing your eyes, and taking a deep breath to steady yourself.
“I don’t think I’m ever going to be truly ready, but it’s time, Yoongi.” Yoongi opened his mouth to reiterate that you didn’t have to do this, but you held up a hand to stop him from interrupting you. “I told you I wasn’t going to run away again, and I meant it. I need to do this for us to move forward. I know we have to be discreet and probably say we’re just friends for a little while, but we can’t take the next step or even keep seeing each other unless I go back into the spotlight.”
“You’ll have to move; you’ll have to deal with being followed, with security, with no privacy. I-I don’t want you to hate me because I can’t keep you from that,” Yoongi said, tears brimming his eyes.
“If this past year has taught me anything, it’s that I’m incapable of hating you, Min Yoongi. If anything, I love you more than ever.” Yoongi pressed his forehead against yours at your confession, his fingers digging into your waist.
“You’d think a year apart would be enough for me to fall out of love with you. I think I’d still love you even if we spent fifty years apart from each other,” Yoongi whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “Are you sure this is what you want?”
“You’re what I want. The cameras, the public persona–I will relearn to deal with all of it if it means that I get you back in my life. If you’ll have me, that is.”
Yoongi’s lips met yours, the tears on both of your cheeks mingling together as you sealed your promises to each other. Yoongi pulled back long enough to murmur two words before pulling you back into him.
“I’m yours.”
---
One week later, you sat in front of the phone that was sitting on a makeshift tripod, Marianne blotting your face with powder. You had finally gotten to come back to your apartment, now with an added security system and non-disclosure agreements signed by your neighbors. You would be permanently moving into a more secure location, picked out by Marianne and Yoongi’s team, after today. The best part? It was only ten minutes away from Yoongi’s building.
Your Instagram and Twitter had been reactivated. After seeing you come back online, the rumors that it could be you in the photos with Yoongi became even more persistent. It was now or never.
“Remember what we talked about. Be yourself. Tell them that you needed some time off, to reflect and be creative, things like that. Don’t talk about Yoongi,” Marianne instructed. You rolled your eyes at the last point.
“I may be out of practice, Marianne, but I’m not completely useless. I really don’t think I’ll randomly start talking about my secret boyfriend during my Instagram story video.”
“Hush, you know I’m just doing my job,” Marianne playfully scolded.
“I know, and I love you for it.”
You checked your phone one last time, smiling at the last-minute good luck texts from your parents and the members of BTS. Your phone vibrated in your hands with a text notification.
Is it going up soon? – Yoongi
Yes, I’m about to record it. Depending on how many takes Marianne makes me do until it feels “natural”, it should be uploaded in a bit. – Y/N
Call me when it’s over. Good luck, I love you. – Yoongi
I love you, too. See you on the other side. – Y/N
“Are you ready?” Marianne asked.
“As I’ll ever be,” you breathed out. She gave you an encouraging smile.
“3, 2, 1…action.”

Part 3 of 3   Part 1   Part 2
Kenma X F!Reader
Warnings: Fluff, Implied Sex
Tumblr media
A year after you got married a lot had changed, you showed up more in his streams sometimes gaming alongside him. You also launched a joint channel for lifestyle types vlogs that wouldn’t affect your other content. You had woken up alone which was strange, what was even stranger was that it was late in the evening and you don’t remember falling asleep. Grabbing a throw blanket and pulling it over your shoulders you go looking for Kenma. You find him in the middle of a stream but you don’t worry about interrupting anymore. You simply walk in and climb into his lap while he continues playing.
“What’s up kitten?” He asks and you don’t answer verbally just nuzzling your face into his neck. He turns giving you a kiss on the forehead before his attention is back on the game. Eventually you fall back asleep in his lap to the sound of his mouse and keyboard clicking. The next morning you wake up back in the bed  with Kenma by your side. You figure he brought you in when the stream ended last night. You don’t have the energy to get up but you spent the entire day yesterday in bed. You get lost in thought debating on getting out of the bed for so long that Kenma wakes up seeing you laying there lost in thought.
“What are you doing?” He asks.
“Hmm, sorry lost in thought?’
“Are you okay? You’ve been sleeping a lot lately.”
“I’m fine really.”
He doesn’t say anything else but you know he isn’t convinced.
“Do you want breakfast?” He asks, you know that he notices the smallest things.
“I haven’t had much of an appetite.”
“You should still try to eat something.”
“Pie.”
“We can’t have pie for breakfast.” he says.
“Why not?”
“Because for years you said I can’t have pie for breakfast.”
“If I say I changed my mind can we get pie for breakfast.”
And that is how you end up heading to the nearest grocery store and coming back home with apple pie. You preheat the oven and stick the pie in waiting. You sit on the counter top with Kenma standing between your legs playing a game on his phone. You lean over hooking your chin over his shoulder watching him play. You let out a loud yawn.
“Still tired?” Kenma asks.
“Kind of, I don’t know really. I’m not tired but I just want to sleep.”
“Have you been sleeping?” He asks closing out his game and opening his internet browser.
“No, what are you doing?”
“Looking up your symptoms.”
“So the internet can say I’m dying. No thanks. I’m fine it’s probably just because I finished the project I had been working on.”
“If you say so.”
The pie comes out and cools, you spend the afternoon laying back on Kenma he doesn’t mind it he actually enjoys it but it doesn’t ease his concern.
“I have to go start my stream kitten.” He says while tapping your hip signaling for you to get up.
“Okay I guess I will leave you my lovely cuddly buddy. I need to shower anyway.”
“Are you going to come watch the stream after?”
“Yes.”
When you get to the shower you realize you are out of body wash but you have an extra in the cabinet. You open the cabinet looking around for the bottle when the brand new unopened box of tampons catches your eye. You start doing mental math and something isn’t adding up. You go grab your phone opening your period tracking app. The app shows that you are thirty five days late, you sit down staring at the dates and it was of course right. You panic not quite sure what to do, having a baby wasn’t something you had planned for yet. You had talked about it but had decided to wait for now. You change quickly, peaking your head in and getting Kenma’s attention.
“Hey I need to run to the store, I’ll be right back.”
Kenma immediately senses your unease and is up out of his chair coming towards you leaving his stream unattended. “What’s wrong?”
“It’s nothing really, Kenma your stream.” He doesn’t even turn to check on his game his focus on you.
“Why are you rushing off to the store all of a sudden?”
“It might be nothing but I just need to check. But I’m fine really so just go back to the stream okay.”
“I’m going with you.” He says walking over and abruptly ending his stream with no goodbye or explanation.
“Kenma.”
“It’ll be fine, I'll explain it to them later.” He says putting on his shoes.
“Now why are we going to the store?”
“I might be pregnant.” You say in a low voice. Those simple words stop Kenma in the middle of putting on his shoe, turning to look at you as you put on your shoes.
“Really?” He asks, he doesn’t sound upset, just surprised and you just nod your head.
The trip to the store and back is quiet, not the normal comforting quiet. This quiet was unbearable and suffocating.
“This is awkward.” You say looking at Kenma standing in the doorway.
“What is?”
“I can’t pee with you watching.”
“I can turn around but I’m not leaving.” He is so adamant that it actually makes you laugh and you are able to pee. It is a long five minutes waiting for the results. You sit on the bed with Kenma, he has you wrapped closely in his arms, “Are you worried?” He asks.
“Are you?”
“No.”
“Really?”
“You seem surprised. It is the obvious next step.”
“Well I know that. We’ve talked about kids but only hypothetically. It is not like we planned this.”
He takes your hand in his bringing it up to his lips and kissing the back of your head. “Plan or no plan, we’ll be fine.”
You hear the timer go off and Kenma goes to check it. “What does it say?” You ask.
“We are going to need to come up with a plan?” He says turning it to show you the positive sign.
Who knew a small positive sign could change so much. Everything and nothing changed, Kenma had taken to watching you like a hawk. He took time away from gaming outside of his streams even though you told him it was unnecessary. Your friends were all expectedly excited claiming they were going to be the best uncles. You had yet to address it with your fan bases not sure if you want them to have that much information just yet. Your followers did notice that Kenma had shown up more in your recent videos. The first time you get morning sickness Kenma sits on the floor in the bathroom with you rubbing circles across your back. He eventually learns to bring you ginger ale and saltines. He likes to keep close to him whether it is sitting in his lap while he streams or just on the couch in the room with him. His viewers notice the change, how much more often you show up in his videos even if it is just in the background. You eventually make an announcement when you inform your followers that you would not be attending any conventions or expos in the upcoming year. Kenma attends all of your doctors appointments with you listening intensely to everything the doctor is saying. The weeks pass and start to show he can’t keep his hands off of you in every sense of the word. You would between his legs and play video games laying your head back on his chest. You wouldn’t call him much of a cuddler beforehand, he didn’t mind cuddling but he rarely initiated it. And now he was close to you every chance he would get.
“I love you I really do but let go.” You say to Kenma as you try to climb out of the bed. “
“Just stay in the bed.”
“I have editing to do.”
“You don’t have to edit. You work too much.”
“Oh really and my videos will somehow edit themselves.”
“Hire an editor.”
You scrunch your nose at the thought, “No, I want them done a specific way, my way. And you have a meeting to get to.”
“Don’t wanna.”
“Well you have a business you are in charge of so tough noogies.”
With each passing month you and Kenma adjust to the ever coming changes. Soon enough your due date comes but the baby does not. You have grown impatient, sore and tired from your precious bundle that just refused to make an appearance.
“This is your fault you know.” You say glaring at Kenma.
Kenma had grown use to your small jabs in the final weeks, he knew you didn't mean anything by it and right now he wanted nothing more than for your baby to be born.
“What do you mean by that?” He asks .
“They take after you, stubborn little bugger.” You say rubbing your belly.
“The doctor gave us a few things to try to induce labor.”
This comment earns him another glare. Nearly a week and a half later while you are watching Kenma stream, he had been doing them more often because he had planned to break for a few weeks after the baby was born. You sit shifting constantly unable to find a comfortable spot. You get up feeling the urge to pee yet again and when you stand up you feel a slow seeping liquid.
“Uh, Puddin’?” You say to Kenma.
“Yes.”
“I think my water just broke.”
You had never seen him in such a panic.
“What?!” he exclaims, ripping off his headphones and tossing them onto the desk. Before rushing out of the room. You watched on confused by what just happened, you walked over to his desk putting the headphones on your head.
“Sorry about that everyone but we have to go. Have a good night?” You say before needing the stream and going to look for Kenma. You find him by the front door checking the bags that have been packed there for weeks.
“Okay okay you need shoes.” He says, pulling out your shoes.
By the time you arrive at the hospital Kenma has calmed all the way down returning to his usual reserved self. You may have thought the wait was over but it wasn’t several hours of intense labor later at 2:38 am your baby is born. A little boy that looks just like Kenma. You watch as the nurse hands him the baby, he hesitates slightly before taking him into his arms, You can’t help but smile watching the scene before you. In the early hours of the morning warm light fills the room and Kenma watches you and the baby sleep just in awe.

Have you seen the post going around about the zoom class with one guy and his full streamer setup vs the guy whose just in the middle of the woods? I know you have a prompt list rn but I’m just saying there’s a sternclay fic in there somewhere...
It is! Here you go!
Life is better with order. Or, at the very least, with some attempt at patterns, organization, or consistency.
Which is why Stern has carefully arranged his desk, his chair, and his equipment in the background. Streaming as a hobby and a side hustle means he has some (okay, a lot) of practice making his digital self look just right. He needs to make a good impression on the first day of the semester.
Unlike some people.
“Holy shit man, are you in the woods?” Duck, the guy in a “Monongahela National Forest” shirt, grins as he asks this of another student whose screen consists of a forest clearing, a log, and the name “Barclay.”
“Yeah. Hang on, lemme finish getting the phone balanced.”
“Dude, that’s like, way better than my background” this comes from Jake, in front of a poorly rendered half-pipe.
“Can’t really take credit for it, just where I ended up.” Barclay sits down, and Stern gets his first look at a man so tall he barely fits in the frame, with a short, coppery beard and an honest-to-god man-bun.
Damn west coast schools.
“How is your battery going to last long enough for class?” Stern leans back in his chair, certain Barclay will have “battery trouble” halfway through as an excuse to cut out early.
Barclay smiles, lifting up a small green and black rectangle, “solar battery. Not everyone needs fancy gadgets for school.” He aims a pointed stare at Sterns set-up.
“It’s important to have the right equipment.”
“Whatever you say, man.” He lifts a cup of iced coffee into the frame, sipping it through a straw. It’s the picture of relaxation, as if nothing is wrong in the world. As if this is all totally normal.
Stern wants to reach through the  screen and slap some sense into him. Preferably while he’s shirtless.
He chalks that thought up to not having gotten laid since last December and pulls up his note taking software as Professor Chicane enters the room.
------------------------------------
Private Chat 9/20/20
Duck (he/him): I timed it, we’re already at ten minutes of arguing.
Indrid (he/him): I know Ned enjoys their demonstrating the different modes of rhetoric, but this is a bit extreme.
Duck: To be fair, Joe does seem kinda uptight.
Indrid: Yes, but Barclay should know by now that zeroing in on him during our practice debates only results in this.
Duck: Yeah. Oh shit, are they for real wrapping up you think?
Indrid: We can only hope. Skype me tonight?
Duck: Of course, sugar.
--------------------------------------
What is Joseph’s problem? He’s got a set-up that would make a pro-vlogger jealous, what looks to be a well-lit apartment with some houseplants and the kind of coffee-cups that are weirdly lacking in personality. His clothes are immaculate, his hair slicked back as if he;s in a business meeting rather than an online class in the midst of a chaotic world. So why is he acting like everything is terrible? And why is he always arguing with Barclay, when there are plenty of other people in the class to disagree with?
“Now” Mr. Chicane’s voice booms through the tiny speaker on his phone, “if you all had a chance to read over the instructions, we will begin the first mock debate. Do we have any volunteers?”
He and Joe raise their hands at the same time. Mr. Chicane raises an eyebrow.
“While I appreciate your eagerness, gentlemen, I would like two other volunteers this time.”
That’s fine by him. It’s not like he likes listening to Joseph get all wound up and passionate, making everyone on the call sit up and take notice of him. It’s not as if he enjoys being the center of his focus.
Nope, not at all.
-----------------------------
Private chat 10/11/20
Jake (he/him): Dudes, did you see who got paired up on the final project?
Aubrey (she/her): Chicane must be getting them back for all the times they’ve hijacked discussions.
Duck (he/him): Man, for their sake I hope it works out.
Indrid (he/him): This is going to be a disaster.

“Are you out of your mind!” Stern is talking before Barclay’s video is fully on.
“Nope. And you don’t have to yell, my speaker works just fine.”
“You’re outside, for all I know there’s a ton of ambient noise.”
Barclay, phone obviously in his hand as he walks through the trees, groans.
“And don’t try to derail this; how can you possibly suggest I come out there so we can do the project in person? We’re supposed to be limiting travel and gatherings.”
“Look, Joseph, we both agree that trying to generate our own cryptid hoax is the best way to demonstrate all the techniques Ned wants us too, right?”
“Yes” he hides his answer behind the rim of his coffee mug.
“We’ll do a way better job if we work in the same space. And if it makes you feel any better, I haven’t had any human contact in three weeks; all quarantined up, unlike whatever you’ve been doing in the city.”
He sets the mug down with a thunk, “I haven’t been out in a month. And before that was only for one grocery run and a hospital visit.”
“Uhhh-”
“I cut my hand cooking. So. Yeah.”
Literal crickets chirp, courtesy of Barclay’s end of the line, as the silence stretches on.
“If it helps, it’s real easy to stay isolated here, and I’ve still got utilities and everything.”
“And you’re not subsisting only on MREs or granola or something?”
A deep chuckle, the kind that makes his skin prickle, “Nope. That much I can promise.”
Stern glances around the studio apartment, clean and empty.
“What’s your address?”
------------------------------------
Look, all Stern is going to say is that he’s seen and read plenty of stories that start with a cabin in the woods and none of them end well. Which is why he’s still sitting in his car, parked beside a beat-up Subaru, rather than knocking on the door.
Breathe in, five counts. Out for four. Repeat four times.
Waiting for him on the door is a note.
Joseph,
Key under mat, make yourself at home.
Barclay.
He brings in his bags (a matching set of three, a gift from his aunt last year), placing them in the tiny guest room. It’s not much more than a bed, a dresser, and a tiny table. But there’s a heating unit below the window looking out into the woods, which is pretty pleasant. He’ll be keeping the blinds closed at night, though; he hates the thought of something being able to look in.
Stern’s busy evaluating the laundry closet when the front door opens.
“Hey, glad you found the place okay.”
Barclay stands in the doorway, a basket full of fruit in one hand. He’s remarkably kempt for a man living in the woods and that, combined with the deep voice being even richer in person and the fact Stern has to actually look up to meet his eyes, has him stumbling for words.
“Your directions were very thorough. Thank you. Um. I put my things in there, should I, um-”
“I can give you the grand tour.” The taller man sets the basket on the dining table, notices Sterns puzzled expression “there’s a piece of property about a mile thataway that has orchards they don’t really use. They let me come and pick whenever i want, less for them to clean up.”
Barclay keeps up a steady monologue as he shows him the cabin. The lower level is the living room and dining area, a kitchen which leads onto the back deck, Sterns room, and a bathroom. As the cabin is A-frame, the upstairs is Barclay’s room, all dark wood and pine colored plaid. It’s as Barclay is telling him about the woodpecker that sometimes nests in the eaves that he realizes why he’s talking so much.
He’s nervous.
Neither of their nerves improve when he gets to his last point of order.
“Uh, so, the bathroom downstairs is only a half-bath.”
“So...if I want to shower, which I do, I have to come up here.”
“Yeah.” Barclay scratches the back of his neck, “sorry. I don’t, like, sleep naked or anything so we should be fine.”
“Disappointing.” Stern sighs, only to sail past sarcastic and land face first in sincere.
Barclay blushes, then shrugs, “Trust me, after the first night, you’ll see why.”
Stern does. He’s warm as long as he’s in bed, but the moment he ventures into the bathroom in the middle of the night he’s cocooned in cold.
The morning brings cinnamon and coffee on the draft coming under the door. He plods into the kitchen in search of caffeine, finds Barclay in an pron, the counter covered in trays of dough.
“Morning!”
“Morning. Coffee-”
“Right there, sugar and stuff’s in the cabinet above it, cream and such is in the fridge.”
Blessedly, there’s heavy cream to be found, and soon he’s sipping from an enamel mug emblazoned with a UFO made of veggies.
“Is this all for your job?” Barclay mentioned he was a cook during an icebreaker.
“Yep. Way it works is I bust my ass baking once or twice a day, and Thacker, who works with Mama at the Lodge in town, comes and takes them over there. Normally I’d just be there but, well, y’know.”
“Everything is on fire? Figuratively, I mean.”
“Sometimes literally too, but yeah.”
As he’s turning to grab his clothes and head showerward, Barclay adds, “You a scone man, coffecake man, or a cinnamon roll man?”
“Coffeecake?” It comes out hesitant.
“There’s no right answer, man.” Barclay sounds amused, “what do you want?”
“Cake, definitely.”
“Cool. I’ll save you a slice.”
Once he’s showered and on the wi-fi, his day runs like normal; one lecture, reading, a research paper, his initial half of their project, and working either his copy-editing or transcription job in between, and planning his next stream. Barclay comes and goes, stops now and then to see if he needs anything, leaves a sandwich in front of him around dinner time. Then it’s time to crawl under the covers and dream of a less-stressful world.
The next day, just before one, Barclay taps him on the shoulder.
“Ready for class?”
“Yes…” He gestures to his laptop and notebook.
“C’mon, join me out here, it’s way nicer, and we can share the phone.”
“Barclay, it’s  a nonsensical way to attend class, just stay in here with me! Even this set-up has to be better than the woods.”
“This set up. You mean my house?” All the friendliness leaves hi voice.
“Yes. Look, I agreed to come out because you’re right, if we want to ace this thing that’s worth sixty percent of our grade, this is the place to do it; I don’t have to go along with the whole self-sufficient woodsman aesthetic while I’m here. “
“Yeah, I’d say you’re pretty far from self-sufficient. See you in class.”
Stern stews through the entire session, but where he’d usually find something Barclay says to latch onto, he instead gnaws on himself. Why didn’t he just go with him? Why snap at someone who’s been nothing but nice since he got here?
Whatever the answer, how can he fix it?
---------------------------------------
Barclay tromps back through the twilight, done with his second class of the day. If Joseph is in the main house, he plans to ignore him until tomorrow morning. That all goes out the window with the clank of dishes from the kitchen.
Peering in reveals the other man bent over, pulling a casserole from the oven. He waits to announce his presence until Joseph is out of the danger zone, enjoying the view as he does.
“Smells good.”
Blue eyes flick over to him as Joseph opens drawers, “it’s mostly cheese and chips, so I’m not surprised.”
“Servers are in that one.”
“Thank you. Nacho pie?” He scoops some into a bowl, holding it out.
“Sure. Uh, look, Joseph I-”
Joseph holds up the server, “Wait. Before you apologize I, um, I wanted to say I’m sorry for my comments. And for being so...me-ish.” He sighs, staring at the utensil in his grip, “I’ve always been a little bit tense, tried to be polite and effective and friendly in spite of it. The last six months made that harder to do. I don’t love it when I can’t be organized, when normal systems go out of place. But that’s no excuse for being rude to you, even before you invited me here. You’re just so...you’re always so calm and relaxed, like nothing was wrong and I just honed in on that way more than made sense. I’m sorry.”
“If it makes you feel better, I kinda did the same thing. You’re always so put together, it looked like you had this organized life in the midst of this whole shitstorm. I feel lik everything is slipping away, like my world is just this cabin. I mean, I assumed you were seeing friends in the city, while I haven’t seen Mama in person since April. So” he sets the bowl down, rests his hand on Joseph’s shoulder, “I’m sorry too.”
Joseph laughs, softly, “turns out we both had failures of imagination, huh?”
“Yeah” he runs a hand over Joseph's back, “now come on, this dinner’s not gonna eat itself.”
-----------------------------------
“You sure you don’t wanna wear the bigfoot costume?”
“Positive. Besides, it suits you.” Joseph finishes styling the fur on the head of the costume to look more realistic, “I just hope we get this done before that storm comes in; as mush as the rain would add to the mood of the scene, that’ll be hell to dry and you’ll be miserable. So, go lurk over there while I finish up getting the camera settings where they need to be.”
“Yes sir” Barclay pops the head on, leaves crunching as moves to his appointed tree. He smiles as he watches Joseph fiddle with the camera; things have been so much better between them these last two weeks. They trade off cooking dinner, study side by side, and watch movies or play games in the warmth of the heater. They have a similar sense of humor and taste in books, and are tidy to boot.   Joseph’s even come with him to listen to lectures in the woods, the pair sharing a thermos of coffee under the astonished gaze of their classmates. There’s just one problem.
Barclay’s buried crush is now blooming in every direction. Animated, argumentative Joseph was attractive. Joseph, in all his moods and mannerisms, is devastatingly enchanting. He’s come close to telling him this, but the other man is his guest and also only here for another two and a half weeks, so a confession is setting himself up for heartbreak at worst and awkwardness at best.
He almost blew it last night when they were washing dishes (Joseph scrubs, Barclay dries and puts away).
“Last one.”
“Thanks, blue eyes.”
“What was that?”
“Uh, blue eyes? Like a, uh, a nickname?”
Joseph laughs, “Sounds like something from a Raymond Chandler book. I like it.”
On the plus side, if Joseph thinks it’s just a nickname and not a pet name, maybe Barclay can keep using it.
“Are you ready?’
He sticks up a hairy thumb and calls, “you know it, blue eyes.”
That same laugh as Joseph takes up his position. Maybe it’s the weird film over the costume’s eyes, but Barclay swears he sees a blush.
-------------------------
Stern trawls through the search results. Their video is getting some traction, with two cryptid hunter sites claiming it’s credible footage. He’s making note of how the information spread, which threads lead to belief and which to doubt, when Barclay calls from upstairs.
“Joseph? Little help?”
The other man is in the bathroom, and when Stern knocks he says, “Think the pilot light on the water heater went out again, all I’m getting is cold water. Can you go relight it?”
“Sure.” He gets to the stairs then, stops, “where’s the key to that closet?”
“Huh? Oh, shit, right, hang on” Barclay says at the same time as Stern’s “don’t worry, I can find it.”
Which is why the instant he turns back into the bedroom is the same instant Barclay steps out of the bathroom, blue towel around his waist.
Any blood that doesn’t head south goes instantly to Stern’s cheeks.
“You okay there, blue-eyes?”
“It’s completely unfair how good you look without a shirt.”
He clamps a hand over his mouth.
“Idn’t ean to ay at out oud” The mumbled explanation makes Barclay smirk.
“You like this, should see what’s under the towel.”
The unusually bold statement from Barclay kindles his own confidence.
“Don’t make promises you can’t keep, big guy.”
“Who says I won’t.” Barclay sits down on the edge of the bed, nonchalant and leaning back on his hands, “got plenty of time to make good on them.”
“We literally don’t. I go back in a week and two days.”
Barclay toys with the lint on the towel, “you could stay. Through break, through next semester, for however long you wanted.”
“Do you mean that?”
A shy nod, “I like having you around, Joseph. Even beyond the huge fucking crush I have on you I...everything is a little better when you’re around.”
“I, um, I guess it could work. We know next semester is online too, and so is work, so…” there must be variables missing, something he’s not seeing, some reason this is too good to be true.
“You want some space away from shirtless me to think about it?”
“That’d be great.”
Barclay stands, hesitates, then plants a quick kiss on his forehead, “take all the time you need, blue eyes.”

Private Chat log 1/11/2021
Barclay (he/him): Did you see the look on Duck’s face when we turned up in frame together.
Joseph (he/him): Yes. Pretty sure Aubrey yelled something about him needing to pay up. I wonder what the bet was.
Barclay (he/him): Whatever it was, pretty sure I came out the biggest winner.
Stern snorts, trying not to blush on camera, and leans over to kiss his boyfriend on the cheek.

𝐚𝐧: Thank you for the request ♡ Lowkey based off similar experiences from school lol ~♪ I had so many different ideas, but I wanted to write this one for a while so here we go! P.S, happy belated birthday @starryneve :> ♡
Tumblr media
Normally he’d be able to withstand not opening his phone every few minutes— he’d always make sure to clear all his AP, LP, SP, BP, whatever P before heading to work. Stamina bonuses were never a problem too, either he’d head to the comfort room or log-in during lunch break.
However, events were simultaneously running right now and he’d be damned if he wasn’t gonna rank in the top 1%, no, 0.1%.
Itaru discreetly looked around the office, and as soon as the coast was clear he opened up his desk drawer. His phone was stored inside, his team of expensive waifus auto-battling against the enemies for this event.
They weren’t doing bad at all, but he trusted himself a little more than the AI.
As he went over the best skills to use on the final boss, he heard a knock against the divider separating his desk from his co-workers.
“Code red, Chigasaki-san.” You muttered, volume low enough so only he’d be able to hear you.
Yikes, a red so early in the day? His boss must want something done immediately.
He hastily shut the drawer, sighing in relief that the metal filing cabinet barely made any noise.
“Thank you,” he said gratefully as he watched his boss approach from the corner of his eye, already looking agitated with a word yet to be spoken.
“Chigasaki, I need you to work on a new project,” his boss drawled on with the details; Itaru’s ears somehow being able to pick up on the necessary information despite all the words blurring in his head. Something about a presentation being needed and closing a deal— he’ll just check his email for specifics.
He continued to nod, pretending to absorb everything when in reality he was just looking forward to finishing the battle and getting his rewards.
However, hearing your name halted his movements. As you peaked over from your desk, Itaru could tell even you looked a little caught off-guard at the sudden mention.
“Yes, sir?” you questioned, swiveling your chair to face the two men.
“Since you’ve dealt with GeneSys before, I’m assigning both you and Chigasaki as the heads,” he explained, “there shouldn’t be a problem with this arrangement, right?”
“No, sir,” you replied.
“Not at all. We’ll start on the project as soon as possible,” he sent off his boss with a polite smile as the both of you watched his back disappear.
The silence restored in the room, you let out a quiet laugh to break the tension. “Honestly, thank god I’m partnered with you,” you sighed in relief, before humming thoughtfully “although I might get some envious stares for a couple of days.”
He pursed his lips.
“I’m not sure I know what you mean,” he said, but by the twinkle in your eyes, he could tell you knew he wasn’t being truthful.
Not that he minded. It would be an understatement to say he was pleased you were the one assigned to help him; if he could set a favourite co-worker, it’d probably be you. Not only were you dependable with work, but you didn’t bother him needlessly either. Even so, the two of you weren’t exactly friends, at least not until a month ago.
“Thanks for saving me. If he found out I was using my phone…” he trailed off as you shook your head understandingly.
“It’s fine, Chigasaki-san. After all, you’ve saved me a bunch of times as well,” you reminded him, “so what were you doing this time?”
Oh crap, he probably should get back to the game. He shouldn’t keep his waifus waiting, right?
“Oh, just messaging my troupe mates. They wanted to know what time I’d be home for practice,” he lied, pulling the drawer open and quickly selecting the skills and moves to beat up the final boss.
After collecting his rewards, he saw the little red exclamation point by the bento box icon. Lunchtime stamina bonus time~
“I didn’t realise it was 12 already,” he mentioned off-handedly, missing the way you jolted up for a second before pulling open your file drawer as well.
“Should probably have lunch in a while,” you said, unknowingly opening the same game Itaru was playing. “Want to eat lunch together? I’ll go over my previous experience with GeneSys Tech Corp.”
“Sure. The faster we get this over with, the better.”
‘So I could get back to my games in peace,’ the both of you thought.
Tumblr media
Corporate slaves needed more rights. The project wasn’t so difficult that he’d collapse in exhaustion, but he was definitely frustrated with all the demands that needed fulfilling.
Should he game to destress? Ah, but he once he starts he might not be able to stop-
Itaru’s phone screen lit up, and he would have thought it was a game notification if it wasn’t for the ringtone blaring. As soon as he saw your name, he wondered if you somehow picked up on the fact that he was planning on slacking off taking a break.
“Good evening,” you greeted him, voice calm and not at all angry— right, he can strike off the ‘my co-worker has a 6th sense?’ theory. “Sorry to disturb you, just felt like checking in. How’s work going from your side?”
He looked at the graph currently shown on his desktop, already feeling a headache incoming. “Not too bad, could be better,” Itaru answered vaguely, not wanting to give you a bad impression.
He couldn’t figure out whether you believed him or not, the only tell being the hum you let out.
“Same boat, then. Seriously, for a company whose most relevant success is a video game in the 90s…”
Itaru immediately perked up, pressed at the mention of the game. “Right? Then again, what do you expect from them after that total disappointment of a sequel that-“ he suddenly stopped.
If he said any more he totally could’ve been in trouble just there.
“Oh, how’d you know about the video game? GeneSys rebranded themselves a couple years ago, so I didn’t think you’d know about it,” you questioned him, leaving Itaru to scramble for the best excuse he could think of.
Yeah, he’s not about to take the risk and assume you knew the game because you’ve played it before.
“Did some research on the company’s past endeavours,” he began, sounding as nonchalant as he possibly could, “I suppose I got a bit invested.”
That was one way to put it. He still remembered being upset as a teenager that the long-awaited sequel was a total cash-grab.
“Pfft,” you let out a small laugh, and for a moment Itaru felt frantic— did you somehow figure him out? He wouldn’t put it past the you who caught him using his phone, when no one else had, a month ago.
“This oddly passionate side to the princely Chigasaki Itaru-san is really nice.”
He was eternally grateful to whatever higher being (beings?) there was that this conversation was taking place over the phone. Despite the air conditioning, his face began to warm like his phone would overheat after playing for too long.
Seriously, all you said was that side of him was nice— not that you knew the full extent— so why did he feel like a cliche otome MC? Wasn’t he past the stage of getting flustered over stuff like this?
“Chigasaki-san, are you still there?” you called out, and Itaru calmed himself down to the best of his abilities before answering.
“Yeah, sorry. Connection got cut for a bit. You were saying?”
If a smile had a sound, he was definitely hearing it right now. “Oh nothing~ I was just thinking that your fans would be so jealous if I told them I got to see a hidden side of their prince just now,” you teased.
Probably not. It’s not exactly the definition of charming, not even urban dictionary worthy, but he’ll indulge you.
He didn’t even bother covering up the huff that escaped him. “And who knew my dependable and quiet project partner was so chatty? Keeping a guy up this late and distracting him from work?”
It was your turn to be silent, and before he could apologise you beat him to it.
“I didn’t realise it was so late! Sorry, I wanted to chat away the stress,” you explained, “should probably stop disturbing you, right?”
He looked at the time. He’s not sure what he’s doing exactly, but he doesn’t need to go in-game until the reset at midnight— might as well refill his irl stamina too, right? Well, if he could be the bento box that helped you refill your energy, why not?
… Yeah, that sounded better in his head.
“I mean, we could probably talk about work on call… or,” he paused for dramatic effect, “we could just talk.”
Itaru’s equally as relieved as you when you breathe a sigh of relief. Oh thank god, he didn’t want to actually talk about work. It was only the first day of the project, both of you had time to kill. Probably.
“Why do I have a feeling you’re gonna end up sniffing out my secrets?”
He snickered at your suggestion. “Then I’m not the co-worker you should be worried about then,” before you could question who he possibly meant, he continued, “though since you got to see a quote, hidden side of me, unquote, shouldn’t I know more about you?”
“Hmmm? Like what?” you asked.
“Like what you even do on your phone anyway? You’re on your phone just as much as me,” as he uttered those words you were voiceless for a split second, not unlike the momentary silence committed by Itaru minutes ago.
You tittered, your awkwardness not going unnoticed. “Mostly reading e-books, nothing too special.”
Okay, but the way you made it sound gave off the impression of it being fan fiction or something. Not that he’d judge, just a little surprising for you he guessed.
“Oh? What’s it about?”
His suspicion died down quickly enough as soon as you went off about the plot and characters of the story you were reading. He made a noise every now and then to let you know he was still listening, moving to his bed as he slipped on his headphones.
As you ranted about some complicated love triangle he figured would be popular in TV dramas and reverse harem routes, the more he found it undeniable that he enjoyed seeing this side of you, too.
He felt the tension of the workday slip off his system, your voice washing it away. Who knows? Maybe you’d consider a career in streaming or ASMR or something.
A couple of minutes pass by, and Itaru’s wordless responses died down after a while.
“Chigasaki-san?” you asked gently, not wanting to disrupt him should your suspicions be correct. When he didn’t respond, you smiled to yourself. Well, midnight just struck after all.
“Good night, sweet dreams,” you whispered before ending the call.
Tumblr media
Imagine finding out from a 17-year old brat that his ranking dipped because he fell asleep listening to his co-worker’s voice while waiting for the reset. He was a little upset at having to spend diamonds just to climb back up the leaderboard, but at least he’s in the top 0.1% again. It was nothing a bunch of grinding couldn’t fix.
What he was mortified about, however, was falling asleep in call. He was the one who suggested staying in the call in the first place, yet he dozed off on you. You didn’t send him an angry text or anything, but he was still prepared to press an f in the chat for himself.
Itaru found that you were already sat at your desk by the time he arrived, prodding at the phone inside your drawer. While it was mostly hidden, if he looked close enough he’d probably be able to see what you were doing.
… Not that he was going to, of course. You were mutuals in this we-secretly-use-our-phones-at-work tendency, he wasn’t going to betray you now! Still, he was a little curious. A peek over the shoulder wouldn’t hurt, right?
“Chigasaki-san, good morning! You looked like you rested well~”
Mission failed. We’ll get ‘em next time.
“Aha, my apologies. I suppose I was more tired than usual,” he paused, feeling something off— by the way you narrowed your eyes slightly at something behind him he could tell people were probably eavesdropping.
“Don’t worry! It was getting too late to discuss the upcoming project anyway,” you replied, putting emphasis to deter any rumours. Though you weren’t shouting by any means, the sudden volume definitely got you the response you wanted by the upwards pull of your lips. “We can continue working on it now that you’re here.”
As he sat down, turning his chair to face you, Itaru was unable to mask the small grin he sported on his face. “Very cool of you. So you have this side to you as well?”
“I’ve always wanted to try out a scene like that! Though I always imagined myself more on the MC’s side than the ML’s.”
“Hm? MC? ML?” he asked, feigning ignorance to the terms used. Not that those terms were limited to use in games, but still it was a teensy bit suspicious.
“Oh? Uh, MC for main character and ML for male lead,” you explained to him, not knowing that he already knew what they stood for. “Reviews for novels use those terms a lot, so I guess I picked up on them.”
… damn you right, though.
“Didn’t peg you for an office romance lover,” Itaru said, watching you shrug your shoulders.
“What can I say? I’m a versatile person with many interests~” you grinned, the sudden flash of your teeth a little blinding.
Unexpectedly all it took was one late-night phone call for you to be more comfortable around him; he finds himself feeling much of the same. Still, weren’t you getting a little bolder with your vague responses?
Well, if his dating simulators taught him anything, it was clear that you were begging for a response. For an unathletic man, his heart rate increased steadily like a man on a morning jog— the anticipation similar to what he felt when a game continued to throw him pleasant surprises.
“Really? What else are you interested in, then?” he asked, keeping his voice low so that only the two of you could hear each other. On the outside, the two of you probably (hopefully) looked like you were discussing work; at worst, conspiring a business scheme together— the glint in both of your eyes said otherwise.
“Wouldn’t you like to find out?” you laughed quietly, almost tricking Itaru into believing you wouldn’t say any more. “For starters, I’m interested in you,”
He’s, well, more than a little dumbfounded. Shellshocked might be the appropriate word for it. Seriously, who told you it was okay to be so direct? Illegal, absolutely illegal. Someone arrest you already.
Still, his face is as calm and relaxed as ever; you wouldn’t have noticed anything was wrong if not for the colour beginning to dust his cheeks.
“What specifically about me?” He could be digging himself a deeper hole, but all the same, he could use this to turn things around.
You rolled your eyes at him, as though the answer was obvious. “Everything, pretty much— though especially your, let’s call it the non-princely persona. I’m onto you, Chigasaki-san~”
He resisted the urge to laugh, pushing down the bubbling feelings of excitement that threatened to leave him.
“Not if I expose you first, sweetheart~” he threatened jokingly.
Thus began a game that would end sooner than both of you expected.
Tumblr media
“Chigasaki-san, is it alright if we end our planning session early today?” you asked him, picking up your mug and placing it between your lips. He found himself mirroring you, drinking his coffee as well before responding.
“Sure. You have something you need to do?” He asked curiously, the dip in his smile showing the slightest disappointment on his features.
Work was still stressful as always but your presence, especially over the past week, had made things bearable if not enjoyable at points.
“Yeah. I have to pick up something from a store and I don’t wanna rush before closing time,” you explained, setting the now-empty ceramic down. “Thank you for the drink, Chigasaki-san. It’s easier to work with no one to bother us, you know?”
“Don’t mention it. You treated me yesterday, so it’s my turn now,” he waved off, shutting his laptop to begin packing up his things. “Need me to drive you to… wherever?”
The two of you exited the coffee shop, the cool breeze hitting your faces as the two of you descended the stairs. As you turned to greet him farewell he fought to keep his hand still as he looked at your wind-blown hair, slightly unruly but endearing at the same time.
“If I didn’t know you better I’d say you just wanted to be around me a little longer,” a soft, airy laugh escaping your throat. A smile touched the corners of his mouth and played in the laugh lines beside his eyes.
“Who’s to say you’re wrong, though?” he watched the red creep from your cheeks to your neck, half reveling in his success and half wondering if it went any further. He’s only a little dismayed that you hastily wished him goodbye and ran off to who knows where, but there was always tomorrow.
Tumblr media
By the time you enter the game shop you’ve calmed down, for the most part, hair still a little disheveled but otherwise alright. Did playing around and teasing him finally come to bite you in the ass?
Ugh, that felt like a moment in otome games where the MC decides to tease the ML and the comeback has them all flustered and they run away.
Okay, that’s exactly what happened.
Seriously, you were an adult, what were you doing acting like a teenager? Did the dating simulators infect your brain or something?
You browsed through the new figurines to distract yourself, waiting for the inventory manager to retrieve the game you pre-ordered a while back. Once you and Itaru Chigasaki finished this deal with GeneSys you were going to immediately put in all your free hours into playing the game.
From the corner of your eye, you could see a familiar character, his figurine hidden a couple rows back.
“Damn, haven’t seen you in a while,” you muttered to yourself, grabbing the figurine. Shitty sequels aside, the OG game was totally fun. Maybe it was due for a replay of the game? You could probably dig up the cartridge somewhere in your room.
Distracted by your nostalgia, you wouldn’t have noticed him if it wasn’t for the narrow space causing you two to bump into each other.
“Ah, sorry…” you apologized for blocking the way, about to put back the figurine and move on until you heard your name.
Shit, you knew that voice all too well.
“Chigasaki-san?!” you exclaimed, taking in his widened eyes and knowing your expression wasn’t too far off from his own.
Once the initial wore off, rationality and relief took place. To think you were hiding the extent of your, uh, gaming obsession when in reality he wasn’t too far off, as far as you could tell by the sleek, limited-edition controller he was holding.
Yeah, he might even be worse than you.
“When I implied wanting to spend more time with you, I didn’t think it’d be like this,” he said, a good-natured laugh leaving him. Despite your original embarrassment, you followed suit soon enough.
“I guess we both ended up seeing each other’s secret pastimes at the same time, huh?” you replied, shaking your head at the ridiculousness of it all.
“I was right though,” you began, watching Itaru’s eyebrow quirk upwards.
“Right about what?”
“Liking this hidden side of you,” you smiled in delight as he looked at you uncontrollably fond, finally getting to fix your hair with his free hand.
He’ll ask you out properly some other time, but for now…
“Just the hidden side of me?” he teased, his hand sliding from the top of your head to poke your cheek. “Meanwhile here I am, liking all of you.”
You huffed, rolling your eyes in faux exasperation. “I like all of you, too.”

One Side, Two Lives
Chapter Three
First Previous Next
Hello Brother Dearest!
Warning: mention of eating disorder, swearing, and Remus being Remus
What a wonderful morning. Not. Roman rolled out of bed, literally. He groaned as he got up from the floor and wandered around his room. It was early, maybe around four or something, he honestly couldn’t care too much. Being the ego really sucked sometimes, because if Thomas was feeling horrible and like he wasn’t worth anything, Roman might as well have caught a bad case of the flue. He had woken up with a sore throat and such a stuffy nose that he could barely breath.
“Why, just why must I be the ego?” Roman complained to no one as he messed with his already crazy hair. He sighed, guess I better go get some kind of medicine. He was so out of it that he didn’t even try to conceal his appearance to any others that might be up at that time.
He walked out of his room and lazily walked to the main room. Although the sides did have their own bathrooms and medicines, all of Roman’s was pain pills and and antidotes for different poisons. You’d be surprised what he finds on is adventures, Remus doesn’t exactly know the meaning of “harmless creatures”.
Because of this, their was a bigger medicine cabinet that was open to anyone, Logan made sure that this was put it to place a while ago when Roman came back from a a small adventure and was severely poisoned and out of medicine. To say that he gave some of the others a scare would be a bit of an understatement; though he didn’t really know any of this since he was out cold for the next three days.
When he got to the main room he was a bit surprised to see the anxious side sleeping on the couch curled up with his headphones still on. He was snoring softly and Roman, even sick, couldn’t help but smile at him. He’s like a little cat, so cute. Roman grabbed a blanket that was on one of the other seats and and carefully used it to cover the smaller side.
After that he went over to the cabinet and got the medicine labeled “ego boost”. He hated taking these, they weren’t supposed to lessen depression, they sorta just put Roman in a state of neutral at times like this, supposedly if he takes too many Thomas will think he can do literally anything, and that would be incredibly dangerous. He sighed as he took only half of the small pills, this should lessen his symptoms while still keeping his mental state the same.
After taking it he went back to his room and laid down in his bed. He needed to to get to work but he was just felt so dead right now, he could take a a little break right now right? Your so pathetic, can’t even work though a little cold?
“Shut up you asshole…” and Roman was out like a light.
He woke up a few hours later with a start when something large and stinky jumped on his bed.
“Who goes there?!” He said, a sword materializing in his hand. Not a second after two daggers met his sword.
“Hello brother dearest!” The owner of the daggers shouted. Roman squinted in his lightly dark room and made out the shape of an insane smile and green eyes. He groaned and flopped back onto his bed.
“Hello Remus.”
“What’s wrong Robro? Usually you start yelling at me already for being on your bed” Remus said in a concerned voice. Roman, who had previously had his arm draped over his head, looked up and saw that his brother had mud splattered on his shirt and pants, which was starting to get on his bed. Once again he groaned and without being able to think of a more polite way, he simply kicked his brother of his bed to stop any further damage to his sheets.
“I’m sick Re, its not very fun” he complained to his brother. The green side was about to jump back onto the bed when Roman shot him a glare that could kill. Although he could probably get away from his brother in the state he was in, Remus decided to do the nice thing and snapped away his usual outfit leaving him in some shorts and a green tank top that had the image of a broken heart on it, after that he jumped back onto the bed and laid next to his brother.
“Is this because of the debate from yesterday? Ego a little low bro?” Roman just gave a small nod to tell his brother he was right. He hated being sick, but he had to do something or else he would defiantly feel worse tomorrow, at least emotionally. He sighed as he sat up and walked over to his work desk, if he was a little wobbly he wouldn’t admit it.  He looked over the many projects he needed to finish but his mind could barely register any of them.
“You know as much fun as it would be to see you fall on your face five times trying too work, I think you should sit down.” Remus said forcing his brother to sit back on his bed.
“I’m going to go grab you something to eat and if I find out you tried to work I’m hitting you in the head with my morning star. “ he said before he left his brother in his room.
He quickly rose up into the dark sides part of the mind palace and grabbed a couple of snacks. A bole of popcorn, a few juice boxes, two apples balancing on his head, and finally a stick of deodorant stuffed under his arm.
As he walked back to Roman’s room he was careful to avoid the others. He wasn’t afraid of anyone, he was creativity, one of the strongest sides, but he wanted to make a big appearance soon and he didn’t want to spoil that by one of the light sides seeing him.
Once he did get back to his brother’s room he saw Roman trying to sneak his way over to his desk to work. Not having any of this, Remus stuck out his foot and tripped him, summoning a pillow so that he wouldn’t hit his head to hard.
“I told you not to move, you’re sick and you’re not going to be good for anyone if you don’t take the time to get better.” Roman sighed in defeat and got off of the ground, though he was tempted to just lay there and fall asleep.
“Fine, you win Re, but what the hell am I supposed to do in the meantime? You know I hate doing nothing.” Roman said as he flopped on the bed.
“Well you can start by eating,” Remus said, and just before Roman could interject he continued , “I know you haven’t eaten anything today so don’t even try to lie to me.” Roman faked offense, “I would never! I’m the heroic prince, I would never lie.” He said with a smile. Remus snorted at that.
“Yah, and I’m as strait as a ruler, we can do this all day Ro” he retorted. The siblings where used to small squabbles, it was just how they were, honestly it would be concerning if they didn’t get into some kind of argument already.
After their little argument, they decided to have a movie day. Roman of course voted that they watch a Disney movie with a good bit of action, Remus on the other hand wanted to watch a horror movies with lots of gore. Compromising, they decided to to watch an animated DC movie of Remus’s choice that had enough people getting killed to satisfy him.
They were having a fairly good time all in all,  but unfortunately for Roman it did not go unnoticed that he wasn’t eating much.
“I swear Roman if you don’t start eating more I will stab you in the gut, one time for every meal you missed.” Remus scolded his brother. Roman rolled his eyes saying that stabbing him wouldn’t be any better for his health, Remus said it would remind him to eat regularly.
“Look Remus, I know you worry about me and I worry about you, but I promise you I’m fine. I don’t go a day where a don’t eat something.” Roman said. It was true, after a very heated argument with his brother a few months ago Roman had made sure to eat a little something each day, even if that something was just a handful of grapes.
Remus sighed, “I know brother but with how much you go adventuring the little amount of food you eat might as well be nothing.”
“Hey, you go out adventuring as much as I do and you eat deodorant for breakfast.” And accidentally proving Roman’s point, Remus took another bite of his favorite flavor of deodorant before glaring at his brother.
“Maybe but you know I eat three meals a day even if those meals aren’t the healthiest. Come on Roman, I’m just trying to make sure you don’t accidentally hurt yourself.” Remus said with the softest look he could muster. Roman sighed in defeat, he hated making others feel bad and  being a burden on them. Maybe if he just played along he could convince his brother that he was doing better.
“Okay ok, I promise I’ll do a better job of taking care of myself, what kind of prince would I be if I make others worry for nothing. Can we move on to a different conversation now?” Roman said starting to feel uncomfortable as they continued to talk about his flaws. Remus, sensing his twins discomfort smiled a smile that was a bit to wide and moved onto something else.
“Ok Ro, what have you been working on recently?” Remus said, he knew full well how much Roman like to tell about whatever project he was on. To his immense surprise Roman sighed heavily and flopped onto his back.
“I’ve got a few things that I’m exited to get working on, but currently I’m just feeling a bit overloaded with having to come up with whatever we’re doing in the next Sander Sides video” Roman complained. He only ever complained to his brother since he knew that Remus would figure out what was bugging him wether he told him or not.
Remus considered this and walked over at Roman’s desk that laid on the other side of the bed. There were papers thrown everywhere on it and some of them had a small red x in the corner which he could only guess meant ‘scrap it’ considering his brother’s perfectionist mental state.
I really need to help him work on his self esteem, the self conscious bastard. Remus thought to himself. Well, he couldn’t do much now, but maybe he could buy his brother a bit of time.
“Hey Ro!” He suddenly exclaimed, makingRoman jump a bit. “I’ve got a great news. I was planing for it to be a bit of a surprise but whatever. I’m going to introduce myself to Thomas in the next video!” That got Roman to pay attention.
“Really?! Heck yah! No offense to the others but things will be way more interesting with you around!” Roman was as exited about the idea as Remus. They always had to be careful with their meet ups because of the whole light sides and dark sides thing, but if Remus introduces himself to Thomas it would make a lot more sense if he just popped up in the lights sides area every now and then.
“Of course things will be more interesting, its me where talking about” and just to emphasize his point, Remus plucked off his head and held it under his arms, wearing a smile the whole time. Roman gaged at the display and warned his brother about getting blood on his carpet, even though he himself had done so many a times. Once Remus screwed his head back on, literally, he sat down and explained that he was probably going to give Thomas a light  nightmare and then show up when he asks the others to appear to talk about the dream.
Although Roman was not a fan of scaring Thomas in any way, it sounded like a fairly good plan. It would give reason for Remus to appear and Thomas was already having some trouble sleeping thinking about the missed call back and all.
“Sound like a good plan brother, but Thomas is already having nightmares quite often so your probably going to want to make a move sooner than later before we discus the nightmare problem.” Roman said. Remus nodded a bit, understanding the reasoning.
“Alright, he has to make some kind of video two days from now right? Ill just show up the night before so that he makes it a Sander Sides.”
“It’s going to be hard to pretend like we hate each other.” Roman said, the two have been putting up a charade of hatred for each other their entire lives, but it was a lot harder to act like you hate someone when you’re around them and just want to act like siblings.
“Yah, but it should be fine, it can’t be that hard to act like I want to kill you.” Remus said playfully, but he made a mistake in that moment, he shoved Roman in the ribs.
Roman hissed in pain and put a hand to his side. Remus pulled back, that was a really light hit, but he acted like his ribs are- Remus’s face turned into a scowl as he figured it out.
“Roman…” Roman froze at his brother’s voice. Well, I’m screwed. He slowly turned to his brother with a nervous smile. Even though they were the same height Remus seemed to tower over him and Roman knew he was not getting out of this one. “Hey brother, something the mater?” Roman said, his voice shaking and still keeping up his smile.
“Did you get hurt and not tell me dear brother?” Remus said with one of his creepiest smiles.
The two usually helped one another when they get hurt, so when either of them didn’t tell the other, someone got a very harsh scolding.
“Um, maybe? I just went for a walk in the imagination and got hurt a little bit”  Roman said rubbing the back of his neck.
“How badly?” Remus asked.
“Oh, not very badly, just a few broken ribs.” Roman answered looking anywhere but his brother. Remus, still smiling like a maniac, put his hands to his mouth, closed his eyes, and took a deep breath in.
“HOW IN THE WORLD ARE YOU SUCH A FREAKING IDIOTIC MORON!”  Remus yelled as he shook his brother back and forth.
“I thought I could handle it! I just fought the manticore chimera for a bit and got nocked into a wall. But after that I came right back and wrapped my ribs and got some ice so I’m fine now!” He stated as he tried to defend himself.
“That doesn’t mater you idiot! First of all, you shouldn’t have fought the manticore by yourself you asshole! Secondly you should have come to me when you got hurt! What if it hadn’t been a clean break and a piece had cut up your insides or something!”
“That’s not how humans work!”
“That’s not important right now! You should be resting for a lot longer than one day! Your sick and you have broken ribs! That is a very bad combo!”
“Look, I didn’t mean for things to go as badly as it did, I wanted to blow off some steam and I was off my game a bit.”
           Remus sighed heavily.
“Look Roman that’s not the point. How would you feel if I got seriously hurt and and didn’t tell you?” Roman thought about that for a second, he figured that he would probably scream at his brother for getting hurt for an hour of more.
“I guess I would yell at you until you couldn’t hear anymore.” Roman admitted. He thought that he could pull of the act to not make Re worried, but it looked like he failed at that as much as everything else in his life.
“Look, just, come to me when you have a problem. We both got issues and we need to deal with them. It’s better for us to put them out into the open instead of trying to hide them and us finding out later.”  Roman sighed and agreed with his brother.
“I get it, if I get hurt this badly again I’ll go to you for help” Roman said, crossing his fingers behind his back. “Can we move onto a different subject now, I could really use a break from real life for a while.”
“Not quite yet brother, you have to promise me you won’t be doing too much until your ribs are at least partially healed.”
“That’s going to take at least three weeks before they are completely healed!”
“Just get some medicine from Logan and take some of your ego pills, you’ll be good in a two weeks tops” Remus said.
“Maybe but we have to do a video before then remember, it was your plan.” Roman pointed out with an annoyed scowl on his face. Remus seemed to think that fact over a bit, then you could practically see the lightbulb appear over his head.
“What if I knock you out for most of the video?”
Roman’s brain short circuited for a minute. “What?”
“Just listen. I could pretend to hit you in the head with my morning star and then you could just pretend to be knocked out for the rest of the video! You can get some sleep and rest while it gives me a more dramatic appearance, its perfect!” Roman did not think this was the best solution they could come up with, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to get Remus to change his mind.
“Fine, if you really think this is the best option.” Roman said. He couldn’t help but give a small smile when his brother lifted his arm in the air proclaiming victory as loudly as he could. The rest of the day the two went over the plan and Remus’s song to make sure everything went right. Roman smiled as Remus started singing  “Forbidden Fruit”, I guess having a manic for a brother isn’t so bad.
Finally! I been dying to start writing for Remus. I hope all the people with brothers or sisters could recognized the fear of getting in trouble with them. Well, that all for now humans, have a lovely day, bye!

For @azurefishnets... last year! But what’s a backlog amirite. Now it’s seasonal again!
Kamila shook her head.
“Too bad you don’t get it, Sissel, do you? It would be fun to work on this together.”
Talking to the cat was a tried and true pastime whenever she got a technical break from the absolute concentration her projects required. In that cozy wintry afternoon, brandishing a plastic welder that would be heating up for next minute or so, Kamila looked at her cat, at the pieces of the soon-to-be noise-cancelling earrings spread out on the table, at her apple tea in her favorite mug which had gone cold thirty minutes earlier but everybody knew that it was the thought that counted and that tea was more of a state of mind anyway, and felt at peace with the world.
Sissel could not quite say the same. What didn’t he get? Couldn’t he? He walked onto the table, feigning nonchalance as only a cat (or a ghost) could do, watching her solder three blue plastic rings and fasten them to an earrings base on one side and to a short chain on the other. At the other end of the chain were the blue silicone bits Alma put in her ears at night, the ones Sissel was not allowed to play with. The look of the plastic rings matched that of the silicone plugs – not the same, but they looked good together, as if they were always meant to be part of the same item. Sissel meowed: he got that much. Kamila set down the rings for a moment and sneaked him a scratch on the back, but did not seem to care for a follow-up to her statement.
The earrings were not the only item on the table. A small crawler robot retrofitted from one of Kamila’s early competitions was waiting for the finishing touches – its flashy new red coating was taking entirely too much to dry, as resin coatings are wont to do, and a bottle of ketchup stood next to it. Sissel slipped into the ghost world to paw at the bizarre contraption, still wondering. He understood soldering, he understood knitting, he knew it was bad when acrylics dripped out of their bottles. He understood checkers and had a beginner’s grasp on chess, and knew how to play mean card tricks with a small human help, so all in all, there was no reason to cut him out of the afternoon’s entertainment. He found the knack that made the little robot start and gave it a little ghostly push, out of boredom and contrarianism.
The robot grabbed the ketchup, surveyed the table, found what looked like a dish and was about to squeeze the condiment on Kamila’s tools when she reached for the off button.
“Sissel, no!” she snorted. “Not like that!”
She never could figure out how the cat pulled these pranks, and as a prospective scientist it stung like a personal failure. Still, as a prospective scientist, she had come to the irrefutable conclusion that it was none other than the cat who did it, and it felt like their little secret, and a bit of magic that brought a strange joy to her rigorous world.
“You silly kitten, you know you are my favorite tester in the whole wide world.” She fastened the welder to its holder and gave Sissel her undivided attention. “And I know you are very, very smart.” That netted her some understated purring that may or may not have been intended as a demure agreement. “And that you understand at least half of what I’m saying. The other half is the stuff you don’t want to hear so that doesn’t count.” Busted.
“But these are the presents I am making for my mom and dad, Sissy. We don’t know who your mom and dad are, so we can’t bring them presents!”
Kamila ran a hand through his cold fur, giving her full consideration to the scenario she had only evoked in a burst of mindless musing. “...or should we bring cat treats to the park next week? Maybe they’re still there and I would not want to be rude. I am very grateful to have you, you know.”
Was that all? Sissel headbutted her wrist when he grew tired of pretending to have a heartbeat and breathe, moving away to the other end of the table and staring at her with bright unblinking eyes.
Humans did love to overcomplicate things, really.
Yet that thought, or part of it, remained appealing.
So he set out to work.
It so happened that Jowd shared many traits with the quintessential cat. This was not always a help to Sissel, who had taken to spending most of his time among humans and sometimes felt like he missed out on the finer complexities of both species. It was, however, enough for him to know, deeply and intimately, that the way the detective went on and on about his upcoming work trip overseas was a desperate caterwauling, a call for help. He was so offended by the sheer fact of being expected to hold a speech at some conference that he neglected to share any details about it, or Sissel wasn’t paying attention on the rare occasions when he did, but what was clear was that the sole thought of leaving felt like torture.
Sissel, then, played a waiting game. He would need a stage for his trick: the right moment had to present itself at the police station, among a crowd of Jowd’s colleagues.
It rained; McCaw walked into the atrium and threw the wet plastic wrapping of a snack into the nearby trashcan. Sissel closed the lid when nobody was watching, letting the plastic fall toward the ground; a well-timed loosening of the radiator’s valve blew it away from the trashcan and close to Jowd’s feet. Now – and this was crucial to Sissel’s plans – Jowd had good eyes and lightning-quick reflexes. He would see the perilous transparent slip of plastic and sidestep to avoid it, even gaining a modicum of admiration from the bystanders. It would only garner more sympathy for his plight, then, when an improbable chain of events that began in the dusty spaces above the cupboards made a bowling ball fall on the desk next to where he’d landed, triggering the drawers’ spring-loaded latches at once and throwing all three drawers at Jowd’s calf with considerable strength. The man yowled in pain as he fell over and squinted at the last movement of this drawers disaster: a sheet of wrapping paper and a ribbon somehow flew out of them only to land exactly on his shoulder.
“Doctor’s gonna order some rest for this. You are welcome,” he said through the ghost world. Jowd’s laughter almost tore down the place and so Sissel congratulated himself upon a job well done: his dad had gotten his present.
His other dad would turn out to be a more complicated affair.
Not that anyone else in all his extended families had any claim to the title of “uncomplicated”, ever, but Yomiel remained the uncontested champion in the opposite direction and so Sissel tailed him for a few days, in and out of the ghost world, waiting for inspiration to strike. Yomiel’s new life needed… a dishwasher, a subscription to at least three computer magazines, a book called “Cooking for newbs” (spelling uncertain), a substantial supply of hair gel, a cat-shaped ladle and a cat-printed tie, Sissel learned, none of which were things a ghost cat could provide, unless a ghost cat felt like stooping to ghost crimes.
Rain again. It was a dark and stormy afternoon when Yomiel grabbed an umbrella and got ready to make a run to the convenience store down the corner; Sissel duly followed him inside the umbrella itself. They coasted a pile of junk discarded next to the wall of an abandoned building – broken chairs, a desk, file cabinets, cardboard boxes littered the sidewalk. Nothing special, nothing new. If not for his ghost senses, Sissel would have never given it a second thought. But that presence was there, undoubtedly. So Sissel jumped out of the umbrella and into a fire hydrant, and from there he frantically looked for the control unit of the nearest street lamp.
Sunlight was fading, and the city would soon bask in in its warm artificial lights, but that one street lamp lit up ahead of time to shine a spotlight on the pile of cardboard boxes. Yomiel raised an eyebrow under his shades. The street lamp went out and lit up again. Yomiel shot it a pointed look and approached the boxes underneath.
As he moved one of them aside, a kitten meowed at him, red fur darkened by the relentless rain. It was lost and hungry and had the biggest, roundest paws; Yomiel teared up as he tried to hold it and felt it hold him in turn. He cradled the kitten close to his chest and greeted it with his warmest, most private smile.
The whole street lit up.
“I know it was you, Sissel,” Yomiel whispered to the empty boxes. “You could’ve just told me! Who’s givin’ ya this knack for theatrics?”
“Statistically, you.”
“As if. I’m onto you. But… thank you, my friend.”
“...you are welcome. Just don’t name it after me, will you? Try to break the streak?”
“I’m not making any promises.”

Y/N and Jaebum hate each other. What happens when they''re forced to work together for a school project?
You liked to life with as little negativity as possible. Sure, you had bad days, but you went through those knowing that it was simply a bad day and the next would likely be better. You really didn't have anything to complain about.Your friends were great, supportive people, your family as well. You had just one rainy cloud in your sunshine life. Lim Jaebum.
It's not like you wanted to hate Jaebum, you didn't. In fact, you really wanted to like him, you had tried to like him. He just made that near impossible. He was rude and cold. When you first met him, you wondered how someone you had just met could already hate you so much. You had met last year at your best friend Mark's end of the year party. Mark had moved into an off campus apartment and he and his roommate had decided to through the party this year. You got there early to help Mark set everything up. When you knocked on the door, Jaebum answered, scowl on his face. He merely grunted at your presence and moved aside to let you in. Throughout the night, he either acted upset at your being around or ignored you completely.
So here you were, beginning of your senior year of college, still dealing with Jaebum's shitty attitude. You had long since given up on trying to be civil and treated him as he treated you. You were supposed to meet up with Mark for coffee today, but he texted you this morning saying he felt ill. Being the good friend you were, and not trusting him to take care of himself, you decided to head to his apartment with medicine, soup and juice to take care of your best friend. The fact that Jaebum had classes all day today, made your decision that much easier. Mark had given you a spare key for emergencies, so once you arrived, you just went ahead and let yourself in.
Setting your supplies on the counter, you turned to the cabinet and grabbed a bowl and a glass. You set those on the counter, and turned back around to grab the soup. Reaching for the can, you looked up when you heard a voice. "How did you get in here?" Standing before you, stood a shirtless Jaebum. Without even meaning to, your eyes scanned down his chiseled form. You had never realized just how cut the man was. You hated to admit it, but he looked good. "You gonna stare all day or are you gonna give me an answer?" his voice snapped you out of your thoughts. "Mark gave me a key" you replied, voice laced with annoyance, "and for Pete's sake go put some clothes on." You turned around to continue your tasks, not noticing the smirk on Jaebum's face as he walked away.
When you finished heating the soup, you knocked in Mark's bedroom door, only to be met with some form of groan. Taking that as permission, you opened the door only to see a Mark size lump on the bed. Yanking the blanket off of his head, he let out another whine before turning to face you. "What the hell, Y/N?" Why are you here?" his voice was rough, either from sleep or sickness. You chuckled lightly before replying "Well, I know you and I knew you wouldn't take care of yourself so here I am." He gave you a small smile and you made him sit up so he could eat.
"I'm just saying that he didn't have to act like I broke in or something. Why is he even here, doesn't he have classes all day? And does he always walk around half naked? I mean-" your rant was interrupted by an obviously annoyed Mark. "Y/N, don't take this the wrong way but I'm sick and I really don't want to hear about the crush denial you have for JB." You actually reeled back as if you had been slapped. You? Crush? Jaebum?  Absolutely not. No way. Not if he was the last man on Earth. Turning to Mark, you narrowed your eyes. "I do not have a crush on him." You were met with Mark's stupid smirk, the one he gets when he thinks he's right. "I mean it. I hate him." you continued only to still see that smirk. "Sure, Y/N. Whatever you say".
For the next week, you were at Mark and Jaebum's every day taking care of Mark. By the fourth day, you were pretty sure he was faking so you'd keep taking care of him, but you did it anyway. What are best friends for, right? On day five, Jaebum was home all day and that was an annoyance. The day was filled with snide comments and looks of dislike from the both of you. Mark had tried to get you two to at least be civil to no avail. He had even yelled once, something about both of your actions being a sham, but neither of you paid attention. You both just told him to hush and go lie back down. Finally, your time playing nurse was over and you could focus on yourself and your classes.
As a photography major, you took your classes very seriously. You had always had an eye for pictures. You could look at the most mundane things and immediately find a way to make them look beautiful through a lens. You knew all the right angles to turn any random thing into art. Being in a college where you could learn better ways to use those talents, was something you considered a great honor. You even shared a class with some film majors, which you were excited about. Getting to learn about video editing was going to be really neat. Until you got to said class and saw a familiar face. Lim Jaebum. Was there any escaping this man?
Ignoring the empty seat next to the smirking man, you walked to the other side of the room and found a seat there. Sure, you couldn't see the board very well and this particular area smelled odd, but you were far enough away from the thorn in your side that was Jaebum. Your professor introduced himself and began the class as you took as many notes as you could. As the lecture ended, he announced that the class would be divided into pairs and work through the semester on a project. You would receive your partner in an email. The project itself was up to the two of you. The only requirement was it had to be a 5 minute video about something you were both equally passionate about. You were slightly thrown off at being assigned a project on the first day, but excited.
You had been checking your email religiously for two days. You wanted to know who you were partnered with. The thought of getting to know someone new was nice, but you really wanted to start brainstorming on ideas. There was also a little nervousness. What if you and your partner had no common interests? How were you going to complete your project then? Mark had gotten tired of you staying planted by your computer, so he forced you out to get lunch with him. He even took your phone, which you thoroughly protested. "Staring at your screen isn't going to make the email come any faster, Y/N. Take a break and enjoy lunch with me." Realizing he was right, you let the project drift to the back of your mind and just enjoyed yourself.
A couple of hours later, you were returned to your home. You grabbed your laptop, thinking you'd check one more time before you set off to do something else for a while. Clicking your email tab, you noticed the notification for a new email in your inbox. You quickly clicked it, seeing it was indeed from your professor. Taking a breath and calming your nerves, you opened it. Your mind fluttered through so many thoughts before you read through the message. You still really hoped you and your partner had at least one thing in common, but you were determined to make it work regardless. You eyes scanned through the words to find your partner's name. Shit. Fuck. This was not good. There at the bottom was the name of your partner. Lim Jaebum. This was bad. Very, very bad.
Grabbing your phone, you immediately hit Mark's name and pressed the phone to your ear. After a few rings, Mark's voice comes through the speaker. You don't even let him finish his sentence before you launch into your rant. "Mark, this is bad. I just got my email and my partner is Jaebum. What am I supposed to do? We have nothing in common! We hate each other. We have months to work on this and we aren't going to be able to get anywhere I'm gonna fail." When you stopped to take a breath, Mark took the opportunity to start speaking. "You need to stop being so dramatic, Y/N. I'm positive you guys have something in common, you just have to stop being assholes to each other long enough to figure out what that is." As much as you HATED to admit it, he was right. This was an issue you would have to set aside for your grade. With a huff, you prepared your reply "Tell him to meet me at the campus cafe in 20 minutes." You hung up and sighed again. This was going to be a long semester.
You arrived at the cafe 10 minutes early. You just wanted to get the concept down, get a plan together and get out. You ordered a coffee, sat down and scrolled through your phone until a figure slid into the seat across from you. Expecting it to be Jaebum, you looked up with a scowl already on your face. Instead, you found a man you didn't know facing you. "Sup. I'm BamBam. You looked lonely over here all by yourself." Oh crap. This was the exact opposite of what you wanted. You politely thanked him for the thought, but you were waiting for someone. "Aw come on, baby, don't be like that." he started before a hand roughly on his shoulder. "You heard her, kid. Beat it." Looking up to see who your savior was, you were a bit shocked. Jaebum had never done a nice thing for you before, but there's a first for everything.
After your unwanted guest had left, Jaebum sat in the chair across from you. You were briefly distracted by the way his hair fell in his face in such a beautiful way, you wouldn't even have to mess with the angle that much to make a wonderful picture. You quickly shook your head to rid yourself of such ridiculous thoughts and cleared your throat to get Jaebum's attention. "Look, I know neither of us are happy with this arrangement, but I don't plan on getting a failing grade so we need to try to work around our dislike for each other. As of now, I know nothing about you or your interests, so why don't you tell me a little bit about what you like?" He sat there for a brief moment before sliding you a small piece of paper with a number written on it. He looked at you as his lips parted to speak, "I'll go along with whatever you want. Just call me when you decide" then he stood up and left. Yepp. This was going to be a real shitty semester.
As you walked back to your apartment, you pulled out your phone, dialing Mark's number. He answered with sass, as he always did. "If you called to bitch about JB, save your breath. I'm not listening to it." Of course, that had been what you were going to do, points to Mark on that one. You raced through topics to talk about as quickly as possible before settling on a way to find out Jaebum's interests. "Actually, he didn't give me much information, but I still want to try to make this work, so I called you. What are some of the things he's really passionate about?" You felt silly asking Mark this, but you needed to figure out how to incorporate both of your interests, pride be damned. Mark was silent for a while before you finally asked if he was still there. "Yeah. Thinking. He likes, uh, his cats?" You instantly frowned. Cats? Really? You loved cats but is that the best he could come up with? "Oh! And music! He's really into making music." Music, huh?  That's something you could work with.
You hung up with Mark as you walked through your apartment door. You set your phone down and sat down at your laptop, pulled up a word document and began to type an outline for your project. Your plan as of now was to have a music video of sorts. Jaebum could use one of his songs as the music and the video could have some beautiful shots from your photographer's eye. You would each have something you were passionate about in the video. In your mind, it was perfect. Now, you just had to run it by Jaebum. Despite what he said at the cafe, a big part of you felt like he would shoot it down just because it was your idea. Making up your mind that sooner was better than later, you sent him a text explaining your idea. Almost immediately, your phoned dinged with a new message telling you to meet him back at the cafe in 10 minutes. Sighing at having to go right back out, you grabbed your keys and walked out of the door.
Opening the cafe door, you scanned the room, finding Jaebum already there. That was a bit surprising, but you made your way over and took a seat. Before you had even fully sat, he spoke in a harsh tone, "How do you know about my music?" Really? You had to come back to the cafe just to answer a question he could have asked you in a message?  "I wanted to make something that had both of our passions in it, not just mine. So, I called Mark and the options he gave me were music and cats. I love cats, but I don't really want to make this video about just cats" you replied with an emotionless tone. He sat and thought about your words for a moment. "Ok, but if we do this, we're doing it my way. You get say, it's your grade too, but this is my music and I want it done right." You agreed that as long as your input was taken into consideration and it wasn't all about him, that this could work.
One week later, you were on your way to Mark and Jaebum's place to give input on song options for the video. You didn't really like the thought of being in their apartment without Mark, but you were excited about starting on the project. Knocking on the door, you felt a sudden urge to run, and you weren't sure why. It was just Jaebum. Sure, you didn't like the guy, but you had no reason to be nervous around him. You pushed the nervous feeling away just in time for him to open the door. He stepped aside to let you in, and gestured to the kitchen counter where there was a whole buffet's worth of food. "I asked Mark what you liked and he gave me a big list so I just got it all" he said rubbing the back of his neck as if he were nervous or embarrassed. You just stood there for a moment, a little shocked, before thanking him. Was Jaebum being nice to you?
You grabbed a small plate of food and the two of you ate in silence. It wasn't as awkward as you had thought it would be, it was actually strangely comfortable. When you were finished, Jaebum led you to the spare bedroom. Well, what you thought was the spare bedroom. Once he opened the door, you realized that he had a small studio set up there. He went straight to his laptop as you sat on the couch. He informed you he had two songs he was thinking of for the video. The first was a more upbeat song, the second being a slower, love type song. As you listened to the latter, you felt your heart ache in the most beautiful way. It was about love not being reciprocated, and your mind was already flooded with ideas. When it was finished, you gave him a sincere compliment on how amazing it was and told him that you would really like that to be the video song. He gave you the first genuine smile you had seen from him, and your heart fluttered.
You very quickly dismissed that flutter, no way you were gonna take that seriously. After some discussion, you agreed to meet at a nearby park the next day to do some location scoping. The leaves would be starting to fall soon and you had an idea for a shot and you wanted to find the perfect place for it. Saying a small, polite goodbye, he followed you to the door saying he'd see you the next day, and sending you off with some of the food he'd ordered. Mark called a few hours later, asking if you wanted to grab some coffee, which you readily agreed to. Making your way to your usual cafe, your mind wandered through all the ideas you had for the project.
"So, how'd it go?" were Mark's first words to you as you sat across from him. "You know, not that bad. We decided on a song and we're going to the park tomorrow to scout and see if it fits what I have in mind." you replied with a small smile. Mark's stupid smirk was prominent on his face as he raised one eyebrow. "You and JB? Getting along? It's almost like someone knew this wouldn't be so bad." You threw the paper from your straw at him, telling him to shut up. "I still don't like him, Mark. This is just for the project. It's important." The smirk didn't leave his face, but he didn't push you anymore on it. And you sure as hell didn't tell him about the heart flutter.
You met Jaebum at around noon the next day. It was a weekday, so the park wasn't overly crowded and the temperature was near perfect. You had your camera handy so you could check lighting and he had brought a tripod and video camera, just in case. Walking along the sidewalk, you came across a group of trees, leaves falling from them. You grabbed a quick picture before setting the strap back across your shoulder and walking to the middle of the trees. You just stood there for a few moments, leaves falling all around you and just looked up at the branches, admiring the beauty of nature. By the time you had turned back around, Jaebum had set the camera up, facing you. "Thought it would be a good idea to get the leaves falling" he spoke quietly, rubbing his neck again. You quickly moved out of the shot so he could get it the way he wanted. You pulled your camera out to snap a few more photos, then noticed Jaebum looking over your shoulder at the screen of your camera. "Those are really good" he half whispered before going back to his own camera.
After the day at the park, you both decided the park would be your primary location. The idea of mostly nature shots coupled with the slow song sounded very appealing to you, and Jaebum agreed. Things went surprisingly well for about a week. You had gotten multiple shots of the leaves, and a few of some children playing in the leaves. You had even convinced Jaebum to have a leaf throwing war with you. Today was a completely different story, though. You had gone to the park and gotten a few nature shots, but in the midst of shooting, it began to rain. You were immediately struck with a desire to get some shots of the downpour. Rain had always been beautiful to you. Jaebum did not agree, however. Sure, your cameras could both withstand some water, but he simply did not want to stay. This led to a slightly heated argument.
"Come on, this could make a really great shot if you'd just LISTEN" your voice slightly louder than normal. He had been very cooperative up until now, but this was something you were not willing to back down on. "Excuse me for not wanting to stand in the rain and get sick!" his voice louder than your own. "Fine, then go! I'll get the shots on my phone and you can deal with the crappy quality!" this time you were actually yelling. He threw his hands up, and walked away to gather his equipment. Not wanting to let him ruin your mood, you did a twirl in the rain, enjoying how the drops felt on your face, before turning around to get a better shot of the park at a distance. You found Jaebum still standing there, camera still on the tripod. "I thought you were leaving?" You spoke with an eyebrow quirked up. "I am. Had one more shot I wanted to get." And with that he packed up and left.
After the rainy day at the park, things were back to being strained between you and Jaebum. You were having more and more arguments, often forgetting to turn the camera off during, which led to more arguments about the amount of footage that would have to be sorted through. You wanted to shoot from this angle, Jaebum wanted to shoot from the opposite angle. It was like he went out of his way to disagree with any suggestions you had. You had been working on the project for over a month, half of which you had spent arguing. You had finally had enough. You were going to confront him about this. Picking up your phone, you typed out a message giving him your address and telling him to meet you there.
An hour later, he was at your door, camera in hand, thinking you had something you wanted to shoot. You invited him in, and he set up his camera to get it out of his hands and not just placed on your table. You gestured for him to sit on the couch, and you sat next to him. Steeling yourself, you finally set into what was on your mind. "What is your problem? We've done nothing but fight for weeks. I say something, you immediately disagree. We were getting along great there for a while, and now we're back to where we started. Speaking of, why do you hate me so much? I tried to be nice to you, I tried to be your friend. You weren't having it. What did I ever do to you, Jaebum? You were a jerk to me the first time I met you and I just don't understan-" you were suddenly cut off by his lips on yours. And even more suddenly, you were kissing him back.
He pulled back after a moment, just for you to pull him back in. He eagerly chased your lips once more. His tongue swiped at your bottom lip, and you opened your mouth for him. Before you realized, he was leaning you back on the couch. He pulled back again, slightly out of breath. "Tell me to stop, and I will." You replied by pulling him to you again and a small "don't " against his lips. He moved his mouth to your neck as his hand traveled down your body, stopping to squeeze your breast. You let out a small moan, encouraging him and you felt a smirk against your neck. His hand continued to trail down your body until he reached the bottom of your shirt. Pausing, he lifted his head to give you a questioning look. You gave a simple nod, and his hand slipped under the cloth and traveled back up.
He moved under your bra, as he squeezed again. He took your nipple between his thumb and forefinger, enticing another moan from you as he nibbled at your neck. As your arousal grew, you began to buck your hips, a silent plea for more. With a throaty chuckle, he whispered against your neck. "Patience, baby." With a whine, you picked up the pace of your hips, needing some kind of relief. At an excruciating speed, his hand began to slide down your body. As he reached the button of your jeans, he gave you another questioning look. "Are you sure?" His face was serious, wanting to make sure you were absolutely certain this was what you wanted. Breathless, you muttered out, "Please."
He let out a small growl at your neediness, as he undid the button of your jeans. Sliding his hand further down, he kept his eyes on your face. When he finally reached your dripping heat, he gave you a smirk. "So wet already." As he guided a finger through your folds, you let out a moan slightly longer than before. He kept up his teasing, simply running his finger through your wetness. His dark eyes still glued to your face, he teased your entrance, before slowly pushing inside of you. He kept his movements slow, wanting to tease. All at once, he picked up the pace as he added a finger. The sudden addition caused you to cry out in pleasure, earning another growl from Jaebum. His thumb rose to find your sensitive bud, staring in slow circles before picking up speed. Your release was building up fast and he picked up the pace once again. Just as the knot in your stomach unraveled, he learned down to whisper in your ear, "Just let go.I've got you." He gave you one last nibble before leaning up to see your face. His words were all you needed for the knot to completely break, causing a cry of his name.
Jaebum helped you ride out your high before planting a kiss to your forehead. He buttoned your jeans for you before getting up to get you a glass of water. He sat back down, and you could see the obvious bulge in his jeans. "What about you?" you managed to get out between gulps of water. He just laughed and shook his head. "Another time if that's something you want. I have some things to say first." You heart stopped briefly. Did he already regret this? All kinds of negative thoughts ran through your mind. As if he could sense your thoughts, he shook his head again.
"It's nothing bad, and I definitely don't regret anything that just happened. You asked me why I hated you. I have never hated you. I'm not good with people, I can come off cold and distant for a while before warming up. After a while, we just got into the routine of arguing and being distant with each other and I just didn't know how to go about changing that. I always wanted to, always wanted to be your friend. As for why things took a turn recently, we were becoming friends and I realized something, " he paused a moment as if to think, "I realized I didn't want to be your friend. I wanted more, but you still hated me so I went back to what I knew. I'm sorry for making you think I hated you." He finished his thoughts and looked away from you.
You sat there trying to process all of the information you were just given. Jaebum had feelings for you. That was not something you expected to hear. He hadn't hated you, but you sure hadn't liked him. When did that change? When did you go from not wanting to be in the same room as him, to laying on your couch with his hand down your pants? Thinking back, you tried to find the moment it changed. Was it the smile? Or maybe him ordering everything he knew you liked to eat? That may have been the start, but you realized the big moment. The leaf fight.
It had taken you quite a while to convince him, but when you finally had, he gave you that beautiful smile again. You took off running into a pile of leaves, him closely behind you. You picked up a handle full of leaves and tossed them directly in his face, letting out a loud laugh. His smile never left his face as he picked up and even bigger handful and retaliated. You spent an hour together just throwing leaves. That was the moment. That was when everything changed.
Realizing you had been in thought for a while, you reached over and grabbed Jaebum's hand. "I'm not going to tell you that I didn't dislike you. I did. I thought you were an ass. But, I no longer feel that way. You can still be an ass, but it isn't all the time. Things changed for me, too. Even through all the arguing we've done lately, I didn't want to argue. I didn't want to go back to how we were. I wanted to move past that. So, " you took a deep breath, "Let's see where things go, yeah?"
Two months later, and it was time to turn in your project. Jaebum had done all the editing and he hadn't let you see it yet. The night before you were set to turn it in, he asked you to come by his apartment to see the final product. You knocked on the door and Mark answered. "Y/N! Are you here to see me today or are you here to see your b-" you cut him off with a shove. "Move, I get to see the video today." He laughed as you shoved by him and made your way to Jeabum's studio. You gave a slight knock before letting yourself in.
He was sitting at his laptop with his headphones on, taking them off when he noticed your presence. You sat in the chair beside him, practically bouncing. He let out a chuckle and turned to his computer, and handed you the headphones. Putting them on as he pressed play, you focused on the screen. You were expecting the familiar melody of his song, but were met with your voice instead. "Come on, this could make a really great shot if you'd just LISTEN" on the screen was a clip of you and Jaebum. It was the rainy day in the park where you argued about shooting in the rain. Confusion washed over you, why was he showing you outtakes of your fight? That clip was followed by more clips of the two of you fighting. After a moment, the music started. The screen was filled with clips you had never seen before. You staring at the leaves, you twirling in the rain, the leaf fight, all things you didn't realize had been captured.
The video played through more clips of you and Jaebum between shots. The music stopped and your voice played again, "Why do you hate me so much?" you winced at the words, not wanting to remember them. The screen transitioned to you and Jaebum on your couch as he grabbed your face and kissed you. As your voice faded out, Jaebum's replaced it. "Passion is different for every person. For most, it is taken as something they enjoy. For me, passion started as an argument, only to grow into something amazing. See, love and hate are two sides of the same coin. A very passionate coin, for you cannot have love or hate without passion." With that, the screen faded to black.
You sat there for a few beats looking at the blank screen. Jaebum carefully lifted the headphones from your head and wiped the tears you hadn't realized had begun to fall. "You hate it. Don't worry I made the original plan, we can still submit that." He moved to exit out of the video, and you grabbed his hand to stop him. "I don't hate it. It was just beautiful and I wasn't expecting it. He wiped more tears as they fell. "Do you want to see the other one?" You shook your head and pulled him in for a kiss. "No. This one is perfect." He gave you a deep kiss before barely pulling back. "I love you" he whispered against your lips. Smiling wide, you replied "I love you too, Lim Jaebum."

The Tragic Irony of the U.S. Capitol's Peace Monument
Tumblr media
After the storming of Congress in early January, some rioters were apparently surprised to learn that the mere “traffic circle” where they were being arrested was, in fact, the Peace Monument, and part of U.S. Capitol grounds. Mostly unnoticed on ordinary days, the ghostly, eroded statue at the end of Pennsylvania Avenue became a focal point in the news footage of the violent afternoon and remains an enigmatic emblem of its aftermath.
The Peace Monument, strangely enough, got its rocky start as a war memorial, in honor of lost Union sailors and marines. It was conceived by Adm. David Dixon Porter, a famous commander, who intended it for the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, where he served as superintendent. He personally raised funds and, in 1871, commissioned the sculpture, even sketching out his own vision—and taking fire for it. Porter “knows more about the high seas than he does about high art,” one critic sniped.
An amalgam of classical allusions and Victorian funerary motifs, the sculpture remains something of a puzzle to modern eyes. “It’s a mishmash monument,” says Elise Friedland, a George Washington University scholar, who is researching a book about the capital city’s classical art and architecture.
At the top, which reaches around 44 feet, is the bookish muse of History, consulting a tome inscribed “they died that their country might live.” Another female figure, believed to be Grief, cries on History’s shoulder. Below gloats Victory; at her feet are cherubic versions of Mars and Neptune, toying with sword and trident.

And where is the figure of Peace? Tacked onto the back of the sculpture like an afterthought.
Swept away by passion for his memorial project, Porter waited until his final fundraising efforts had all but capsized to share his plans with Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles. The two men had a contentious relationship—Welles “served his country in its darkest hour with fidelity and zeal, if not with conspicuous ability,” Porter once wrote—and Welles vetoed Porter’s plan. The Naval Memorial, as it was called, would not sail to Annapolis after all, nor be installed at the academy. But Congress scrounged up funds and found a second-best spot, at the foot of Capitol Hill.
Sculpted by the prolific Maine native Franklin Simmons at his studio in Rome, the star-crossed monument was shipped to the District of Columbia in pieces and finished in 1877. The statue of Peace was in fact a last-minute addition, and faces the Capitol in an inexplicably topless state. (“Why is Peace naked?” Friedland wonders.) Peace was perhaps a political compromise, added to mollify former Confederates in Congress who weren’t eager to support a tribute to the Union cause. Porter shot off a note to the Architect of the Capitol: “If this statue don’t make members of Congress feel peaceful I don’t know what will.” A novelty in a city full of war memorials, this makeshift peace shrine was not formally dedicated or even quite finished; the design called for bronze dolphins that still haven’t surfaced.
Made of Carrara marble, a material as vulnerable to the elements as peace itself, the monument has not handled acid rain and pollution well. The human faces have blurred. A marble dove at Peace’s feet flew the coop long ago. Body parts have snapped off and been replaced. Making sense of the elaborate artwork has never been straightforward. “This is the issue with these allegorical monuments,” says University of Pittsburgh art historian Kirk Savage. “They can kind of mean anything.” It’s inevitable, he says, that the monument would “be appropriated for other reasons and uses.” (Besides, he adds, “it seems pretty easy to climb.”) In 1971, Vietnam War protesters scaled the monument and rested with flags at the top, looking like statues themselves. During the insurrection this past January, somebody slung a scarf around Victory’s neck and a guy wearing a cowboy hat and holding a bullhorn loomed over baby Mars, god of war.

Contemporary peace memorials tend toward radical simplicity—an installation outside Oslo City Hall, where the Nobel Peace Prize is handed out, is a smile-shaped arc. But some artists see immense power in antique statuary. Krzysztof Wodiczko, who works with video projections and has beamed the faces of traumatized soldiers onto the Lincoln Memorial in New York City’s Union Square Park, says the Peace Monument’s human forms have a hold on us. “We have a special relationship to those statues. We identify with them. We animate them without knowing who they are. We want them to witness what we want to say. Sometimes we sit on their shoulders and put flags in their hands.”
In the days after the Capitol riot, a new face appeared at the Peace Monument: Brian Sicknick, the Capitol Police officer who died of injuries sustained in the mob attack. Mourners left photographs of him beside cut flowers and American flags. A cardboard sign said, “Rest in Peace.”

Inside the original Capitol, which was opened to Congress in 1800, British soldiers lay waste to the east side of the South Wing, home to the House of Representatives. The building is largely brick and sandstone, but they slather gunpowder paste on wooden supports and structures and ignite bonfires. The heat is so intense the roof falls in.

In the North Wing (on the right of the diagram), soldiers burn the Library of Congress (3,000 volumes), torch the Senate chamber and topple marble columns. The heat nearly crumples exterior walls, some of which will be incorporated into a restored and expanded Capitol in coming decades.

British Rear Adm. George Cockburn—who had wanted to burn far more of the city, before Ross declared private property off-limits—infamously stands atop the chair of the House speaker while whipping up his troops. But the occupation doesn’t last: A powerful rainstorm the next day prompts British troops to withdraw from the capital. Four months later, British and American delegates will sign the Treaty of Ghent, putting an official end to the war.

Husband’s Birthday
so I did a thing with dad!Connor...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Word count: 2.7k -ish
You shifted from Connor’s embrace as your alarm went off at 7:30am. Looking at the man behind you, you sigh in relief as he remained unconscious through the alarm. You couldn’t have him awake at this moment if you wanted the surprise to work.
You pressed a soft kiss to his forehead and pulled the covers over his bare chest before slipping out of bed. After freshening up in the toilet, you grab your phone from the nightstand and quietly left the bedroom.
Thank God Sam and Dylan convinced Connor to go out with them until late last night for his birthday. Connor hesitated to say yes; claiming he wanted to spend the night with you and his girls but you insisted he enjoyed a boys’ night with them.
It was a Saturday morning and while Connor could be an early riser at certain times, you were sure Sam and Dylan tire him out last night and he would be sleeping until late morning unless you or the twins woke him up.
While he was at work yesterday, you managed to get the balloons delivered to your house and snuck them away in the unused guest room, knowing he wouldn’t step into the room. You also took the time to print out several photos from your phone into polaroid films so you could tie them to the strings of the balloons. It was a little extra, you have to admit, but it is his 30th birthday.
You started by grabbing the many balloons from the room and shifted it to the kitchen. You arranged them around the dining table and placed the giant three and zero gold balloons right behind the chair where Connor usually sits for dinner.
Once you were done decorating, you then started on preparing breakfast. You grabbed the pancake mix from the cabinet, a big bowl and a whisk from another cabinet, and eggs, milk and chocolate chips from the fridge. You continued to work on making the pancakes for the next twenty minutes. Once it was ready, you placed the stack on the dining table and moved on to making scrambled eggs and bacon.
While you were cutting some fruits, you could hear a pair of soft footsteps coming down the stairs and the sound grew louder as your two five-year old daughters entered the kitchen.
“Good morning, mommy!” Stella and Stacy exclaim as they ran up to you and hugged your waist.
“Morning, my loves” You chirp as you dropped the knife on the board and turn around as you kneeled down to their heights “Can I have my kisses, please?”
Both girls giggled in respond, nodding their heads as they each pressed a kiss to your cheek.
“Look what we made for daddy!” Stacy said excitingly as she held up the handmade birthday card proudly to show you.
“Do you think he’s going to like it?” Sella asks hopefully.
“Oh baby, that’s gorgeous!” You gushed “I know for a fact that daddy’s going to love it, bubs. You can put it on the table so he can see it as soon as he sits down, okay?”
Both girls nodded, turning to head to the table when the twins paused in their steps. Stacy and Stella gasped in awe at the coloured balloons decorated around the table. “Mommy, they’re so pretty!”
You stood up and grabbed the bowl of fruits from the counter, moving it to the dining table “I think mommy went a little overboard with the decorations” You chuckled.
Stacy shrugged as she walked over to Connor’s side of the dining table to put the card in place “Yeah but we love daddy”
Stella nodded in agreement “So it’s okay to be a little extra!” She finished her twin’s sentence.
You laugh a little, nodding at them “Yes, we love daddy very much, bubs”
“Now can you go get daddy for me, girls?” You asked “And remember what we talked about?”
Both girls nodded as Stella pulled her baby blanket from underneath her arm “Blindfold daddy”
“And bring him down to the kitchen!” Stacy finished.
“My smart girls” You sigh happily “Alright, off you go, babes!”
Everything was set up perfectly, just like how you wanted it. You smiled to yourself; you were so excited to see his reaction.
As the girls went up the stairs to get Connor, you waited until when you could hear their footsteps coming down the stairs again before you placed your phone at the counter at a proper angle so you could record the whole thing.
Connor was woken up that morning by his little girls jumping on the bed.
“Daddy!” Stacy and Stella cheered as they continued to jump “Wake up! Wake up! It’s your birthdayyyy!”
When he opened his eyes and was met by his two precious girls, he broke into a smile. He manages to get a hold of their legs and swiftly pulled them; making them plop down on the bed, giggling.
“Morning, lovebugs. That’s one way to great your daddy on his birthday, huh?” He teases as they crawled towards him “Can I have my kisses, please?”
Both nodded, each pressing a kiss to his cheek. It’s become a routine every single morning for the longest time. Every morning when you and Connor would wake the twins up or when the twins woke you up, that’s the first line spoken; can I have my kisses, please?
Connor frowned when he noticed you weren’t in bed with them, like he hoped you were. Honestly, all he wanted to do was stay in bed with his favourite girls in the world and cuddled the whole day while watching movies on Netflix.
“Have you seen mommy?” He asks his girls.
Both girls nodded with a mischievous grin on their faces but didn’t give an exact location so Connor presses “Can you tell me where she is?”
They then responded by shaking their head. Stella offered him her blue blanket “Put this on, please”
He raises an eyebrow sceptically but nodded “Daddy’s going to go to the toilet first and then you can put it on for me”
After putting a shirt on and coming out from the toilet, the girls put the blanket over Connor’s eyes for him and each girl grabbed his hand.
“Are you going to give me a clue, hon?” Connor asks as they begin to lead him out of the room.
“No questions, please!” Stacy giggles “But we’re heading downstairs, daddy”
Carefully, they made their way down the stairs and lead him towards the kitchen. He already knew where they were going, despite being blindfolded; he’s basically memorized all the parts of their house.
Once they stepped into the kitchen, the girls let go of his hand and ran to your side.
“Can I take this off now, girls?” Connor whined “I know we’re in our kitchen!”
“Not yet!” You exclaim as you made your way over to him. You stood behind him and tiptoed to undo the knot of the blanket. Once the blanket came off, you said “Okay open!”
When Connor opens his eyes, he was blown away by the set up. He blinked a few times in amused as Stella and Stacy ran to him, hugging his thighs tightly “Happy birthday, daddy!”
You moved from behind him and stood in front of him, smiling at the sight of your husband and two girls.
“Thank you, lovebugs” He smiled as he bent down to press a kiss to their head. When the twins moved away, he looks at you with full of love and you swear you haven’t seen him smile that big.
Connor reaches out for your hand and pulls you into his embrace “I can’t believe you did all this” He muttered against your hair.
“You only deserve the best, baby” You say, pressing a kiss to his neck and wrapped your arms around his waist “Happy birthday, my love”
“Can we eat now?” The twins interrupted the moment, already sat in their usual seats at the dining table.
You and Connor laugh, nodding your heads. He went to his chair while you grabbed your phone from the counter and stopped recording the video. Family breakfast went on as usual; Connor telling you of the upcoming projects he was going to work on and the twins telling him all the things they did with you while he was at work.
“Girls, can you go sit with daddy?” You ask the twins after everyone was done with their meals “Mommy wants to take a photo”
The twins nodded and raced to Connor’s side as he lifted them up and placed them on his lap. The twins leaned in and pressed a kiss to their daddy’s cheeks as Connor wraps his arms around them and a huge smile was plastered on his face.
“Aww” You cooed at the various photos you took “I love these”
“Mommy, we have to take one with you!” Stella whines.
“Okay! Okay!” You laugh as you walk over to them. You went to stand behind Connor but he shook his head “No, you’re going to sit on my lap as well, babe”
“Hon, you’ve got both girls on your lap” You reasoned with him “We’re not going to fit in the frame”
“Stace, can you get off daddy for a bit, baby?” Connor asks the younger twin, who nodded and slipped off his lap.
Connor reached out for your hand and pulled you down to sit on his lap swiftly, which made you squeal. You picked up Stacy and settled her on your lap. The twins couldn’t stop giggling as you tried to find the right angle so you could fit everyone in the frame.
“Mommy, daddy, can we watch a movie?” Stacy asked once the photo session was done.
“Yeah, please?” Stella pouts “It’s been so long since we had a movie time!”
Connor felt guilty at his daughter’s words. He knew he was the reason why they haven’t sat down together for a movie in a long time since he’s been so busy with his work.
“Yeah baby, course we can” Connor smiles at his two girls “Go ahead to the living room and pick out a movie, yeah? Daddy needs to help mommy clean up then we’ll join you”
The girls nodded excitingly as they ran out of the kitchen. You begin to pick up the empty plates from the dining table and brought it over to the sink. Connor noticed there were polaroid films tied to the balloon but he hadn’t had the chance to look at them closely earlier.
As he walked around the table, looking at each photo; he starts to feel nostalgic. There were so many memories the both of you shared over many years; from being friends, to lovers, to getting married and having the most beautiful girls he could ever asked for. Being together for more than ten years with you and every day he finds himself falling more in love with you, if it’s even possible.
“You okay?” You ask softly as you appear beside him. He was staring at this particular photo longer than the others and that’s only because it was a picture that Sam took on the day the twins were born. You and Connor each had a girl in your arms and were looking at them with full adoration.
The day that Stacy and Stella Brashier were born, Connor swore he would do anything to make sure his precious girls were happy, safe and protected always.
He looks at you and you notice the tears in his eyes. Your expression changed and you worriedly asked “Baby, what’s wrong?”
“I can’t believe I was blessed enough to meet you” He choked out and smiled softly at you “Baby, I can’t thank you enough for everything you’ve done for me; for staying by my side, for loving me, for giving me the most beautiful little girls I could ever ask for”
Your eyes begin to water too as he pulls you in for a hug. Your arms wrapped around his waist as you press your ears against his chest; hearing the beating of his heart “I chose you from day 1, Connor Brashier and I’ll continue to choose you till death do us part. I love you too, babe”
“This is the best birthday ever” Connor sighed happily against your hair “Literally, I don’t need anything else. This is all I ever want; to be with you and our adorable little girls”
“Actually,” You begin as you push him away so you could get a better view of him. You had a cheeky smile on your face as you admitted “I may have gotten you something”
“Babe” He groaned as he watches you move towards the island and opened one of the drawers “I told you I didn’t want anything. When will you ever listen?”
“Never” You say in a teasing voice “Because you do the same shit, dofus! Obviously, I have to reciprocate the gesture”
You pulled out a velvet box and placed it on the marble top, pushing it towards him “Open it”
He took the box in his hand and opened the box. He gasps at the necklace before him. Attached to the silver chain was a four-leaf clover locket in a shade of green that you knew he would love ever since you laid your eyes on it.
“Babe, it’s so beautiful” He whispers in awe as his fingers ran across the green leaves “This is the best gift I’ve ever gotten”
You smile softly and your hands reached over to lift the little knobs on the side of each side in order to open up three of the four leaves; each leaf revealing a picture of you, Stella and Stacy.
“You always said that you wished that we could be there with you whenever you have to do some filming in different countries because we’re your lucky charm” You started as Connor smiled at the pictures of his favourite girls perfectly fitted in the locket “Whether we’re physically there or not, we’re always going to be with you, baby”
You took a deep breath and shakily reached over the last leaf, where there was an empty picture.
 But not for long.
“And in about nine months, we’re going to fill this leaf in and it’s going to be an addition to your good luck charm”
When the words registered in his mind, he quickly looked up at you and he noticed the fresh tears in your eyes “Baby,” He stuttered out “Are we…,”
He didn’t need to finish his question and you were already nodding with a smile “I found out two weeks ago”
Connor ran over to you and pulled you into his embrace. A mixture of your sobs echoed through the kitchen as you held each other close.
“We’re having a baby again?” He sniffled as he looked at you for reassurance “This is real? There’s going to be another mini us running around the house?”
“It’s real, Con” You confirmed, laughing through tears “We’re having a baby, love”
“Oh my God” He sighed happily “This is the best birthday ever. Oh my God, I’m so in love with you”
“I love you too, baby” You whispered softly “God, you have no idea how hard it was to keep this away from you just so I can surprise you for your birthday”
Connor chuckled and presses a kiss to your head “This surprise was so worth the wait, babe”
A little while later, Connor kneeled down so he was the same level as your stomach. Your lips were trembling as you ran your fingers through his hair, knowing what Connor was going to do. This was a similar position five years ago when you first found out you were pregnant.
“Hey little bean, daddy’s going to love you so much” He whispered to your stomach “I can’t wait to see you in 9 months, bean. We’re going to give you all our love and keep you safe always. Your big sisters are going to love you. And I just know we’re going to spoil you like crazy, just you wait”
Yeah, no other birthday was going to top this one for Connor.

Imani missed Erik.
It has been a busy few weeks for both of them; they were lucky if they got a solid 30 minutes to talk or video chat. She looks down at her phone, at the last communication she sent to him, a 'Good Morning' text at around 9 am before her first of multiple meetings for the day. It was now 9 pm, and she was just noticing his 'Miss you' text from noon. She sighs deeply as she rolls her shoulders back, cracking them slightly. Imani sets her phone down, picks it up, opening the conversation again, and sends an 'Are you up' text.
She shakes her curls free of the top bun; she put up in the morning. She grabs her robe and pads across the floor of her apartment to her wine cabinet, pulling out her favorite merlot. Phone in hand, she settles on her couch with the bottle and a glass. She just turned to a Law & Order rerun when her phone chimes. She looks at it, hopeful that Erik has some time for her. She throws the phone down.
"Stupid work emails. I left an hour ago; there is no need to bother me anymore tonight." She groans aloud. "Fuck this." She looks at her calendar, takes a big gulp of her wine, and shoots off another text. Changing the channel to one of those all music networks, she lets some early 90s R&B sooth her as the wine takes hold of her.
Erik missed Imani.
For all the work he was putting in on this project, he felt like he was out on another overseas mission. His phone was useless for anything other than work, and frankly, he was over it. He was over everything that did not include having his baby girl in his arms, on his lap, in his bed, under him. He stares at the laptop on his legs. He is sitting up in bed, putting together the final touches to his weekly report and the presentation for tomorrow. His phone chimes; he looks over at it and groans — another work email.
He continues tapping away as his phone continues to go off. Okay, that can't just be work. He leans over to his nightstand and grabs the phone off the charger. His frown transforms when he sees Imani’s name on the screen. She must have just got off work and saw his text from earlier. He quickly scrolls through her messages and looks at the very last one, 'When are you free, Daddy? I need you.' He shakes his head. She knows what she is doing. He saves and closes the documents on his laptop screen; then sets it aside.
Imani’s phone rings with a video call from Erik. She sets her glass down and accepts the call. “Hey Daddy!” She sings.
“How’s my pretty girl doing?”
“Better now that I have your attention.” She is moving so much that her robe falls off her shoulder.
“Is that all you want? My attention?” He smirks at her.
She feels herself responding to his voice. The wine has her feeling right, and her man is making Imani that much more aware of how long it has been since she has felt him or that masterful tongue. “Maybe,” she draws out, “I miss you.” She wraps the bottom of the robe around her fingers, “Among other things.”
“Oh? Like what? Tell Daddy.” He leans back on his headboard, moving the phone, displaying his studded chest allowing Imani to see the V leading to the top of his sweatpants. He watches her gulp deeply as she prepares her response to him.
"Well, I was thinking about us getting together for dinner," she licks her lips while ogling his body, "and dessert soon. It has been a while, Daddy." She lets the robe fall open and down her bare shoulders. Erik can just make out her hardening nipples.
"Oh, we can definitely do that. My place or yours." He winks at her, and she flushes.
“Your place. That’s where all the toys are.” Her eyes lower as she finishes her thought. Erik closes his eyes briefly as he exhales slowly.
“So, I take it you have something in mind for your,” he raises his eyebrows, “dessert.” She nods her head while looking at the phone. A chime goes off, and then her face drops. "What's wrong, baby?"
“Work. I’m gonna have to go in early to deal with this mess,” she groans. Exhaling her frustrations, “So, will Saturday work for you? I know you are wrapping up that major project.”
He glances at his laptop next to him, “Yeah, yeah. This week should be it. Saturday will be perfect. You gonna let me have my way with you?”
She smiles up at him, “When have you ever had to ask that Daddy? I am yours.”
“My girl! Now, why don’t you get some sleep and I will see you Saturday night." He blows her a kiss through the screen. She turns her cheek, so it lands there, and he laughs.
"Goodnight Daddy." She blows him a kiss; catching it, Erik places it on his chest. She giggles at him.
"That will have to do until Friday. Goodnight baby girl."
Imani jumps up, grabbing the wine to put away. She hums No Sleep by Janet on her way to the kitchen. Skipping back to her room, she takes off the robe and throws herself onto her bed. Three more days and she will be in his arms again.
Erik plugs his phone back up and grabs his laptop. They need to wrap this shit up before Friday. He has plans and does not want anything to go wrong.
--- Saturday Afternoon ---
Imani held a mini spa day at her place, pampering herself in preparation for what is about to go down tonight. She is sitting down on her bed, applying her favorite whipped shea butter that smells like cocoa to her skin from head to toe. She knows Erik loves it on her. She jumps almost dropping the container when her phone goes off. The volume was higher than she remembered setting it.
She reaches for the phone seeing Erik’s face on the screen. “Hey Daddy! Are you ready for me?” He is quiet on the line, and she looks at her phone to see if they disconnected. As the silence continues, she frowns up, “NO! NO! NO! Don’t do this to me.”
“I’m sorry baby girl. I wanted this, too. God, you have no idea. But the contractors called an emergency meeting. I am still here and knowing them; they will drag this shit out all weekend."
"All weekend?" She can hear him grumbling on the other end of the phone. She looks at her outfit laying on the bed.
“Yeah, we just broke for a late lunch.” He can hear her whimpering on the other end. “I promise to make this up to you baby girl. Please don’t be mad at me.”
Sniffling, she flops down on the bed, “I’m not mad at you. This just sucks.” He chuckles at her pouting.
"Once this is all over. I am all yours. I plan to take a few days off, and then we can get away. What do you say?" She can hear the desperation in his voice. He hates having to upset or deny her anything, but this can't be helped.
“Yeah, ok.” Rolling her eyes to keep the tears from falling down her face, “I gotta go. Bye E.”
“DAMNIT!” He slams his phone on the table after she hung up.
“You good Stevens?” One of his colleagues walked by his door.
Erik stands up, “Yeah, I just need some fresh air,” he brushes past him. “I’ll be back by the time we need to reconvene.”
“Okay, see you at 4.”
He makes his way to the elevator, pressing the button harder than necessary. “How can I make this up to her?”
--- Two Days Later ---
Imani took the day off from work. She was ready to snap off the heads of all her coworkers who decided that she didn’t have a life on the weekends. She wrapped up anything that could have waited until Monday before sending an email announcing her absence. Turning off the notifications on her emails, she put her phone away and fell into a peaceful sleep.
Monday morning came and went, Imani enjoyed sleeping in and a quiet phone. Took a long relaxing shower, prepared a lovely breakfast, enjoying the sun rising to its highest point of the morning from her balcony. Curled up in her chair, she looked out and thought about Erik. She was still disappointed about what happened to their plans on Saturday.
Imani rubbed her arms as the mid-morning breeze sent chills through her body. She definitely missed his touch. She suddenly stops and drops her legs to the ground. Standing up to stretch, a huge grin appears on her face, and she starts rubbing her hands together like Birdman. She collects her dishes and heads back inside to develop her plan.
It is late afternoon by the time she makes it over to his place. Imani lets herself in and immediately connects her phone up to his Bluetooth speakers. Her sensual R&B playlist begins to play throughout the apartment. She walks over to her bags and puts away all the grocery items. After leaving some long stem roses on the counter, she finds two of his tumbler glasses and places them in the freezer along with some fruit.
She picks up her small travel bag and takes it into the bedroom. She pulls out two outfits and lays them on the bed. Picking up one with a delicate lacy pattern, she grabs her scissors and starts to cut it up. Imani leaves the long stripes of lace from the waistline of the outfit intact. She grabs the scraps of the outfit from the bed, and takes them into the kitchen, leaving them on the counter next to the flowers.
Imani goes back into the room and her bag, grabbing her favorite lavender candles, and places them around the room. She goes into his closet for a hanger and puts her outfit outside the closet door. Taking one last look around, she checks her phone for the time. She goes into the bathroom and takes a shower to prepare herself for the night, and the role she is about to play.
---
It's Monday night, and Erik is at this company dinner, celebrating his team for all their hard work on the project. This shit is finally over, and he can't wait to let Imani know.
Erik looks at his phone. She has been short with him for the last two days, and he does not like it all. He has called, and she answers but doesn't stay on long. His texts get one or two-word responses. He hasn’t heard from her at all today, and that has him worried.
He knows that this is something they have to work through since it has never happened before. As a man of his word, he has been able to keep any date they set up, until now. Erik can't even say she is begging for punishment, because she is still in contact with him like he requested. But he knows that she is starving for attention and he plans to give her that in spades.
Dinner wraps up, and Erik practically runs out of the restaurant to his car. He pulls his jacket off and loosens his tie. On the way home, he decides to drop by her place tonight after washing all this work off him. He opens the door to his apartment and hears music playing. He notices a trench coat on the floor, and a frosty glass of Henny on his countertop as he hangs up his keys.
Taking a moment, he looks his place over. The lights are dimly lit, which is why he wasn't alarmed when he walked in, the sensors kick in after sunset. Imani is here. Nodding his head to the beat, he finally recognizes the song, Calling on You by Jon B. He drops his briefcase and jacket by the door, slipping off his shoes and putting them in the closet. Erik picks up the glass and spots the handwritten note underneath it –
Daddy -
I couldn’t wait any longer. And I think we both need this.
When you are ready, follow the red & black road.
~ Your Pretty Girl
He looks down and past the trench coat observing the wisps of black lace and red rose petals on the floor, leading a path to his bedroom. He takes a nice big sip of his drink and makes his way towards his room. Walking through his living room, he spots a pair of black and pink Adidas slides by his coffee table, a pair of dark blue denim jeans on the back of his couch and a black Strange Music t-shirt at the edge of his hallway. He grins as he picks up the bra hanging on the door of his bathroom, and laughs as he finds her lace panties on his bedroom doorknob.
Opening the door to his bedroom, Erik tucks the panties into his pocket and looks up to find Imani leaning up against his mirrored dresser. She looks up at him over her tumbler, barefoot in one of his long-sleeved button-down shirts. Imani smiles at him and puts her glass down as she finally speaks, “Have a seat and relax.”
“Well, isn’t this a pleasant surprise?” Erik looks around the room, noting the lit candles and the chair placed strategically in the center of the floor of his bedroom. He decides to play along and walks over to the chair. When he sits down, Imani walks over and stands in front of him.
He looks her up and down. His shirt stopped at her knees buttoned all the way to the top, and her hair in a high slick-backed ponytail with her curls in a big puff. He looks from her red pedicured toenails to her thick curvy hips and thighs, ending at her red painted lips pursed together watching him. When Erik finally makes eye contact with her, Imani takes a deep breath as his gaze penetrates her.
Imani knows that she must stay in control if this is to happen the way she wants. She matches Erik's gaze, not backing down from the intensity. He lifts his drink to his lips and winks at her. “You know what. I could use a refill.”
“I’m sure you could, but you won’t be getting one.” Erik raises his eyebrows at Imani’s response. “I only need one thing from you,” she walks around him and whispers into his ear, “Say Yes, E.” Floetry’s Say Yes begins flowing through the speakers. She walks out of the room, grabbing her glass along the way. Erik watches the sway of her hips as she pads across his hardwood floor.
Imani stops at the hallway closet and grabs a pair of black gladiator heels, taking a seat on the couch. Inhaling and exhaling, she tries to center herself. Feeling more relaxed and in control, she stands up after finishing with the stilettos. She continues to the kitchen and refills her glass of Hennessy.
Erik sits patiently in the chair; he hasn't moved since she walked out of the room. His index finger is slowly circling the rim of his now empty glass. Tapping his foot, he observes as Imani stalks back into the room, appearing much taller than when she left. He glances down to see her legs wrapped from knee to ankle with crisscrossed leather straps ending in a 5-inch stiletto heel.
Imani stands in front of him, wiggling her toes, and sipping from her refreshed drink. “Have anything to say?” He gives her a questioning glare, and she huffs at him. “I need an answer, Erik.”
"What's the question, Imani?" She shakes her head and walks over to the dresser, grabbing Erik's riding crop. Leaving her half-full glass there, she walks back over to Erik.
"Who?" Erik looks at the stern look on her face and tries not to laugh. Oh, she really wants to do this. She is now standing with her hip cocked to the left and tapping the riding crop on her open palm.
"Should I call you Miss or Madam?" His voice cracks on the last part, and Imani takes the riding crop and puts it under his chin, lifting his face to look her in the eyes.
"Miss will work just fine." She taps his chin on either side with the crop, "Now, try again."
“What is the question, Miss?”
“Good boy.” She smiles wickedly at him, and Erik feels himself harden at the sight of his innocent girl taking charge.
“Would you like to play with me tonight, Erik?”
“Yes, Miss.” Imani nods and takes the empty glass out of his hands. Erik reaches to take off his shirt, but her hand on his wrists stop him. “No, leave everything on. Keep your hands down by your sides.” She walks back over to the dresser, sets his glass and the crop down. Removing the clicker from his shirt pocket, she increases the volume and changes the song again.
The low rumbling sounds of Skin by Rihanna blare through the speakers. She slowly saunters back over to Erik, circling him as she starts singing the song directly into his ear. In front of him, she unbuttons his shirt as she starts a figure 8 roll of her hips while exposing a deep plunging neckline. Continuing down and mouthing the words to the song, she unveils a cranberry lace teddy adorning her glowing chocolate brown skin.
She maintains eye contact with him during the whole reveal, watching his breathe stutter as she continues her slow and sensual movements to the song. Imani drapes the shirt around Erik's shoulders and moves away from him just as quickly. She starts twisting her wrists at her hips as she rolls her body to the front. Pelvis gyrating in front of Erik, she laughs lowly, watching his hands curl into fists to keep from reaching out and touching her.
Imani spins around and bends over, so Erik has a wonderful view of her uncovered ass. She slowly rolls back up and drops down to the ground. Looking back at Erik over her shoulder, she slowly twerks controlling the movement of each cheek in time to the song. Still bent at the knees, she turns around in a circle, so Erik has a view of her lace-covered kitty. She bounces up and down, opening and closing her legs.
She is looking up as Erik squirms trying to remain still in the chair. She stands up and pulls the lace teddy down one shoulder, followed by the other, leaving her heaving chest exposed to his hungry eyes. She continues peeling the teddy off her body as she rocks her body to the chorus of the song. Stepping out of the teddy, Imani strolls over to Erik twirling the teddy on her fingers and passes it across his face. She observes him inhale deeply and stops behind him.
Leaning over, she lets her naked breasts press into his back as she takes both the teddy and shirt away from him. As the ending guitar solo starts to play, Imani drags her body along his, lifting one leg over both of his to straddle his lap. She feels his shoulders tense up and grabs his hands, putting them on her waist as she grinds onto him. Erik holds her tight but loose enough for Imani to continue her dance on his lap. She leans back exposing her neck, chest, and tummy to Erik. She looks up when she hears him groan loudly underneath her, causing her entire body to vibrate in response.
As the song ends, Imani removes Erik’s hands from her ass where they fell during her slow grind. She unbuttons his shirt, removing it from his shoulders and letting it fall to the floor. She slides off of him, looking at the mess she made of his pants with her wet pussy, and the hard pole bulging against them. She grabs his loosened tie, standing him up and leads him to the bed. He sits down at the edge.
Putting her leg up onto his lap, “Take off my shoes.” Erik obediently honors her request, as she tries not to giggle at him following her directions, no questions asked. When he finishes with the left, she hands him her right leg to remove the other heel. As he reaches up to her knee to untie the heel, his fingers linger. "Did I say feel me up?"
Snapping back to attention, Erik looks up at Imani’s smirking stern face and tries badly to hide his grin, “Sorry Miss.” He speeds up his task and puts his hands on top of his thighs when he is done. Desire by Raheem Devaughn begins, as Imani steps back from the bed.
“Very well. Now, get in the center, head towards the headboard.” Erik does as directed, laying down in the center of his bed. Imani looks Erik over, lying still on the bed, hands by his sides, bare naked chest showing all of his scars and his tented work pants. Snickering to herself, she hops onto the bed and climbs over him.
Imani looks down at him, underneath her and smiles. She braces herself with both hands on his pecs and rubs her wet pussy along the scars on his stomach and chest. Forward and back, left and right, and infinity circles. Imani can feel Erik’s body tensing under him as she uses him for her pleasure. She continues moving forward until her pussy is right at his chin, “Open your mouth. Tongue out and no hands.” She lifts her hips, plants her feet and lowers herself onto his mouth, shifting around as his beard tickles her pussy lips.
Imani sets a slow pace as she lifts and lowers herself on Erik's long tongue. Letting her wetness drip into his mouth and down his throat. When she finds her rhythm, she begins bouncing with more force — a few quick up-downs and then a long seat before rising and repeating the cycle over again.
Erik knows that Imani is a creature of habit. Now that she found this pattern, she is going to stay there until she cums. His hands are still beside him, tapping along to the song playing. He can feel her pussy clenching as she drops it on him and gripping his tongue as she moves back up. The next time she sits her ass entirely on his face, he curls his tongue and moves it a bit inside of her. Imani shudders but doesn’t say anything.
He lets her repeat her rotation a few more times uninterrupted until she cums against his tongue. She continues to ride through her orgasm, commenting on him being such a good boy and how happy she is with him. She mistakenly takes a moment to sit on his face again, and he starts licking her slowly, dragging his tongue all along her folds.
"ERIK!" Her knees buckle, and she drops to her knees, grabbing the headboard for support, mouth still on Erik's tongue. He takes full advantage of this new position and starts fucking her with his tongue. Poking in and out of her sopping wet center. Imani catches her breath and drags her pussy along his tongue when it pokes out and drops onto him when he pulls his tongue back. With a firm grasp on the headboard, Imani starts bouncing on his face again, faster and rougher than before. She stuns Erik, who adapts immediately by breathing in deep through his nose when she lifts up.
Imani is slapping her dripping wet pussy hard as hell on his face, and the sounds are bouncing off the walls in the room. They both are moaning and groaning from the intensity. Imani due to the orgasm creeping through her body again, starting from the depths of her stomach and moving out to her toes. Erik loving the sounds of Imani and her fucking his face. She clenches and shudders as her next orgasm rolls over her.
Erik makes his move and grips her hips, holding her down on his tongue as he curls and licks her into a mewling puddle on his face.
“FUCK YOU!” She screams out, as she is hit with back-to-back orgasms from his actions. She tries to ride it out as much as possible, but Erik is not making it easy. She tried to move away, but his hold did not give her any room to move away from his assault on her sensitive folds. "Let me go, boy."
Erik releases his hold on Imani’s hips, and she dramatically rolls over to the side. While catching her breath, she isn’t paying any attention to Erik. Who moves off the bed, and over to the dresser. He takes a long sip of from her glass, watching as Imani closes her eyes and slowly drifts off. He takes that moment to slip the long lace strips off of her wrists and slides her to the edge of the bed on her back. He grabs her hands and ties them using the lace straps; he sets them on top of her stomach. Imani opens her eyes and looks up at Erik, who is smiling.
Imani squirms in her position, head hanging off the edge of the bed and hears Erik unzipping his pants. He leans down to look at Imani’s surprised face, kissing her lips, “You’re welcome, baby girl.”
“No, it’s not –“ Erik dropped his dick down her throat. He pulls it back and runs it along her face, cheeks, and lips then taps it against her mouth.
"Open your mouth and no hands." Imani pouts as he uses her own words against her, and meets Erik’s laughing eyes as he leans forward again, sticking her tongue out as his dick rests on her mouth. "Be a good girl now." He groans as she moves him around with her tongue and wraps her lips around the head of his dick.
Erik steps forward allowing Imani to open up wider and take him in as far as she can. Imani relaxes into the position and runs her tongue along his shaft before moving further up on his dick. Erik watches as Imani lathers his dick with her spit before squatting down and lowering his dick into her mouth.
With her head back and Erik moving further forward, Imani opens and closes her mouth around his dick as much as possible. Erik squats down, Imani inhales squeezing her throat around him. He lifts up, she licks and moves her tongue around his shaft, sucking on the head. Repeat. Erik starts slow, lowering his dick for a few seconds and then raising back up. Soon, he starts moving like he is completing a repetition of squats at the gym.
Imani squirms in place as she takes all Erik is giving to her. He pulls back, “Level Check.” He watches her as she catches her breath.
“One Daddy.” She huffs out.
“Good girl.” He lifts her up and walks her over to the chair, sitting her upright. “Open wide.”
Imani opens her mouth, and Erik shoves his dick in. She chokes up on it a bit, and he pulls back until only the tip is in her mouth. She swirls her tongue around his head and adjusts to taking him sitting up. Holding her mouth open, she takes it as he moves himself in and out. Slowly at first, and then increasingly faster. He does this a few times, and then stops with himself fully seated in her mouth.
“Hold it.” She inhales around him and through her nose, holding the position. He pats her head as he moves back out, letting her catch her breath as strings of her spit on his dick break.
Erik pulls completely out and slaps her face a few times with his dick. Then he starts again, slow strokes in and out of her mouth, gradually moving faster, then stopping fully inside of her. "Hold it." He keeps it in longer this time, watching her gag on his dick and then removing it. "Good girl."
Erik repeats this a few more times. Standing back, he looks down at Imani. Her eyes have teared up, causing her mascara to run. Her red lipstick is smeared across her face and his dick. Drool and spit dropping off her mouth and chin. He throbs harder, looking at the moaning mess that is his pretty girl. He grabs her by the back of the head and plunges deep again.
Holding Imani in place, she takes it all, “My pretty girl, go ahead and accept this thank you all down your throat.” She moans and chokes as Erik cums in her mouth. She swallows as much as she can as fast as she can, and whatever misses runs out of the sides of her mouth dropping onto her naked breasts. Erik finishes, and Imani is still licking all around his shaft, having swallowed everything he gave her.
Erik moves back to regain his balance. “Damn girl, I love you.” She looks up at him, smiling and licking her lips. He goes into his bathroom to grab a towel to wipe him and her off. He leans forward and wipes the makeup and cum residue off her face, before wiping himself down. He kisses her deeply before moving about again.
He picks her up and pulls back the comforter on his bed, tucking her in. He walks out to his kitchen and grabs some water and fruit from the fridge. Bringing them back into the room, he gets into bed beside her.
“You really did have dessert planned, huh?” She turns to face him and laughs.
“You know I burn hot after being with you. Frozen fruit is good for times like this.” He feeds her the fruit and has her drink some water.
"Thank you, Daddy."
"No, thank you, baby girl. Daddy really needed that tonight." She snuggles in next to him.
“Can we do that again soon?”
“What is that?”
"Me taking charge." He looks down at her. "It was entertaining." She giggles at his expression.
“We’ll see.”
“Don’t think I didn’t notice how you reacted to me?”
“Oh yeah,” he starts tickling her.
“Stop it, Daddy.”
“Or what?”
“You’ll make me pee.”
He pushes her away, “You better get outta my bed with that mess.”
“Then stop tickling me and give me cuddles,” she pouts. He pulls her back into his arms.
“I love you, Imani.”
"I love you, too, E."

The Sleeping Blood
Big Finish’s summary: When the Doctor falls ill, Susan is forced to leave the safety of the TARDIS behind. Exploring a disused research centre in search of medical supplies, she becomes embroiled in the deadly plans of a terrorist holding an entire world to ransom – and the soldier sent to stop him. Written by: Martin Day Directed by: Lisa Bowerman Release Date: June 3rd, 2015 Series: The Companion Chronicles: The First Doctor Volume 1, Story 1 Cast: Carole Ann Ford (Susan), Darren Strange (Gomery/Kendrick)
I really enjoyed this story, and felt it was a wonderful tale about pretty early on in the Doctor and Susan’s travels, where the evolution of both the Doctor and Susan’s views on what it means to interact with other cultures is explored beautifully. I also adore that the end Susan decides that the rich keeping medical care for only rich people is an evil that is deserving of response.
There is also a lot of interesting commentary in this story about how technology Susan has mastered and thinks of as nothing more than a simple concept she was playing with as an infant, is in fact regarded as super extra advanced tech to the rest of the universe. In this case, the tech Susan dismisses as a baby toy are medical nanomachines.
I am generally interested in any story that grapples with what it means that Susan is a Gallifrayen. Plus Companion Chronicle style stories, which are told from a the first person perspective and only feature the narrator and one other speaking voice, are a great medium to tell stories that explore Susan’s experience as a young Gallifreyan who ran away from home before she became a Time Lord.
I also felt it was so very on brand that it wasn’t until one of them got sick that either Susan or the Doctor thought to check the TARDIS’ sick bay for medical supplies. When they did check, they found that the TARDIS they stole didn’t have anything in stock since it was, you know, going to be decommissioned.
Simply the plot of this story is that the Doctor got a nasty cut on a planet he and Susan were exploring together. About a week later they discover the wound had gotten infected and the TARDIS didn’t have any medical supplies in stock. Susan decides to search the next place the TARDIS lands for medical supplies, and then steal them. Complications arise, Susan witnesses a political conflict on the planet, and she comes away questioning if perhaps she and her grandfather should start getting involved with the affairs of the planets they are visiting.
This story very much gave me the sense that the TARDIS was already, at such an early stage, helpfully taking the Doctor where he needed to go. After all, their first landing place after Susan resolves to steal medical supplies is an abandoned medical research facility that was built by people advanced enough to use nanomachines for medical purposes (The TARDIS, with her still fully functioning Chameleon Circuit, disguised herself as a metal medical cabinet upon landing there)!
As for getting involved, well... Susan learns from the planet’s records that the bacteria has all evolved into super bacteria, and there are no longer any antibiotics that have even the slightest effect on any sort of bacterial infection on the planet. As she searches for supplies to help her grandfather, Susan discovers she is not alone. There is a unit of soldiers in the medical facility with her. The soldiers explain that a terrorist - the Butcher - is hiding in the research center. This terrorist is a hacker who has discovered a way to control the medical nanomachines, and he is threatening to turn them against the people who have had them injected.
Susan really wants to get back to her grandfather with the medical supplies she collected, but the soldiers will not let her leave, and they make her go with them - at gunpoint - as they hunt ever closer to the hacker. One of the soldiers dies as their group makes their way through the medical facility, murdered by the Butcher’s manipulation of the technology they depend on.
When they encounter the hacker, he shuts down all the electronics the soldiers have. As most of them are inside metal skeleton suits, they are unable to move.
The hacker starts trying to explain himself, and says he is about to broadcast a video to all the media networks and they should see it too. He also insists that Susan should call him by his name - Gomery - rather than call him the Butcher
Before he can transmit the video, one of the soldiers - Kendrick - gets free of his skeleton suit, and shoots Gomery in the head with an old fashioned gun.
Susan is really really really REALLY not ok with watching a man be shot like that in front of her, while he was talking to her at that, and even as the soldiers keep their promise and return her to the TARDIS, all she can think about is the trauma of watching Kendrick kill Gomery. In addition to the trauma of seeing someone die like that, Susan is worried she got too involved in an other planet’s affairs, and that thought terrifies her, because she knows getting involved in any way is very much against all of Gallifrey’s laws.
This story’s many strengths all are most evident in its end, the final few moments are truly exceptional Doctor Who writing, and paint an incredible portrait of the Doctor and Susan in their awkward in between stage, before Shoreditch, before Ian and Barbara, before that first trip to Skaro, before all of it.
I’ve transcribed it below, because I just really and deeply love the end of this story:
SUSAN: I began using the equipment and drugs I had taken from the research center to start Grandfather’s treatment. Over the course of just a few hours, I saw him begin to recover. He began to talk more coherently and his coughing eased. Color returned to his cheeks. Though he did little but sleep, waking occasionally to cast a proprietorial eye over the TARDIS controls and issue a few clipped instructions. Finally he allowed me to change the dressing on his hand, and I saw that the wound was much improved. As I pulled a blanket up under Grandfather’s chin, I felt something nudge against my foot. It was one of the security robots! Somehow it had followed me onto the ship! I reached down, tentatively, not sure if I should try to pick it up or if I should bat it away with my foot. “Now, you’re not going to hurt me again, are you?” Much to my surprise, it started to play a message! I wondered if this was some of what Gomery, the Butcher, had prepared for the people of Roah! I wondered if perhaps I was the only person ever to hear it. GOMERY: I am truly sorry for each and every death I have caused. It gives me little satisfaction, but I am sure each one was a necessary evil. Who am I to decide who lives and dies? The point is, I’m doing all this precisely because other people are playing god. The truth that has been hidden in plain sight is that our medical advances aren’t for everyone. Our research programs, the drugs we are developing that would have been unimaginable only a generation ago, these only exist to benefit the rich and influential. The top strata of society. Who’s at the top? You may ask. If you’re rich enough to hear my message, you’ve probably answered your own question. We tell ourselves the medicine benefits everyone. Assume every citizen has access to these treatments, but there are millions who cannot afford our nanomachinery.  Millions who have never seen a doctor, not because they don’t need to, but because they can’t pay. They’re in our shantytowns and our slums, but they also serve us in our restaurants and maintain our vehicles. They may even be our neighbors. You see, medical nanomachinery is expensive. Governments and charities can barely afford to invest in it. The major backers are pharmaceutical companies, and they’re only interest is profit. But it is my firm belief, a belief I am prepared to die for or to kill for, that these advances should be for the good of all on Roah. Not the few who can afford it! Though my name is Gomery, you’ve heard me called “Butcher,” a silly nickname I’ve adopted to express my disgust at the way things are, now turned against me. But I didn’t always see the world this way. You won’t have been told, but for many years I worked as a government research scientist. I was in charge of a project that would have allowed the authorities to remotely control the world’s biological technology. Though intended for use only in emergencies, such as civil unrest. It should be obvious to all that this is just another means of control. And so I resigned, sabotaging my research so it would appear the scheme could never work. To my delight, the research center was closed. And then, over the next few years, I began to wonder if I could use my old research to make our world’s leaders listen! To force them to share the benefits of official medical technology rather than keep it for themselves. SUSAN: I found myself replaying the message, again and again. I couldn’t forget the look on the woman’s face, when Gomery had, what was the phrase he’d used? “Switched her off,” to make a point. A terrible end to a life. But neither could I forget Kendrick’s cold blooded execution. Which man most deserved to be called butcher? I wondered if there was a version of Ling embedded within the tiny polyhedral robot, and to my delight… LING: Hello, unknown user! I am Linguistic Interface II! You may call me Ling! How may I be of assistance today? SUSAN: While grandfather slept, I asked Ling about the man called “Gomery” and the planet Roah. I’m not sure why I did. Perhaps it stopped me thinking about grandfather’s illness and how close we’d come to disaster. Perhaps I just had too many questions in my head. And not nearly enough answers. I discovered an excerpt from an even longer recording! It was hard to tell if it had been kept by Gomery himself, or if it had been acquired by the internal security services. It was labeled as a conversation between Gomery and his grandmother, and looking at the chronology it seemed to be this encounter that had changed Gomery. That had forced him to reexamine his life and to start again. To begin on the path, if Kendrick was to be believed, that led inexorably to the killing of many innocent people. That led to an unremarkable man becoming the Butcher.   GOMERY: I can steal some tech from work! I can find a way! GRANDMOTHER: And what if you’re found out? No. I won’t have that on my conscious. GOMERY: Then let me pay for treatment. GRANDMOTHER: I’m not like this because I’m poor! I’m like this because it’s time to go! GOMERY: But there must be something else we can try! GRANDMOTHER: All things that have a beginning have an end. That’s what my mother used to say. Perhaps one day, you’ll understand. SUSAN: Suddenly there was another voice in the TARDIS. “What’s the matter my child?” Grandfather, though still slightly feverish, was awake again and regarding me with some concern. I realized that I was crying, and turned my face away from him. I tried to hide the truth from him, but he could tell that something was troubling me. So I told him everything that had happened. And of course Grandfather, being Grandfather, didn’t quite see the problem. “As far as I can tell, you used your intelligence to find the drugs I needed. You have saved my life. What’s so wrong with that? Hmmmm? Hmm?” But I knew that I had intervened quite decisively in the affairs of others. Perhaps, if Gomery’s plan had succeeded, millions of people on the colony world of Roah would now have access to life saving medicines. Grandfather was keen to remind me that I had been forced to help Kendrick at gunpoint, and that Gomery was a terrorist. That the ends so rarely justify the means. But I was still troubled.   “You have to make a stand! That’s what you always used to say at home! What’s changed?” Grandfather tried to explain that it was really very simple. What had changed was that we had started to see other worlds. Other cultures at first hand. And that he had come to understand that we must not interfere. That to interfere would make us little better than this terrorist trying to manipulate events with no real knowledge of how things might turn out. And then Grandfather sighed. “Of course, if we are forced to act...” his words trailed away. “There are never any black and white answers.” I pondered Grandfather’s words for a few moments. “But that doesn’t mean we stop asking the questions, surely!” But Grandfather then claimed he was tired, and that he didn’t really understand what I was driving at, and anyway, it was time he was back in charge of his ship. New worlds, new times, new adventures. All this awaited us. But, I couldn’t help but notice, Grandfather looking increasingly thoughtful as he watched the rise and fall of the rotar, as we continued our journey through space and time.

You Are The Reason Chapter III (Tom Holland x Reader fanfiction)
Summary: "I could be anything in the world, yet I wanted to be yours. But you don’t love me yet…or do you?“ The whole world thought you’re together but something’s stopping you, something’s stopping him.
Summary Chapter:  Volunteering for a good cause had never been this rewarding and humbling yet..
Tumblr media
YOUR POV
I’ve been friends with Gabrielle ever since I could remember. My early childhood pictures were not complete without her in it . She was also with me during the funeral of my grandfather. I remember how her small chubby  hands tightly meshed with mine as they lower down his coffin. Even at such a young age, she was intuitive, benevolent and selfless. Whenever I fell down and scratched my knee, she will rub my back to soothe me until our moms came hand in hand with the first aid kit.  Those were the very reasons I knew why she’s gonna be a brilliant doctor. We remained in contact even after I migrated to London with my parents..
WhenI got my big break for a movie project, we celebrated together all night, just the two of us, drinking red wine straight from the bottle on her rented spacious one-bedroom studio. When I mentioned to her that I’ll be coming in the States from time to time to fulfill a handful of job offers, she was over the moon, and so am I. She drove me on my US auditions, lingered in the waiting room until I was finished for day . That’s where she met Harrison and Tom who I’ve been friends with already.
Living alone in an almost foreign soil, even just for a few months, made me miss my England even more. Hotel rooms weren’t envisaging homeliness. Back then, Gabby’s still living an hour away from me, a moderate distance from where she’s finishing her studies. After 6 months however, she was designated here in the city for her residency. I begged her to stay with me since we’re practically in each other’s presence whenever none of us were occupied. She happily settled on the spare ample space beneath my bedroom and was in charge when I’ll be flying back home to St. James’
When I earned enough money for a semi-permanent place here in LA, we roamed the city by ourselves. The need to prove myself  that I could do one adult thing in my life simmered intently on my bones. I good-heartedly declined offers, no special treatments from anyone on my team which they respected . She, who without doubt, the more “grown up” one between the two of us, would take a step in front of me whenever she felt like agents, realtors and sellers were being greedy and pushy.. I was gullible to such sly advancements, therefore on the third day, Gabby insisted that I should just let her negotiate since she knew how Americans think nowadays and I’m basically an alien.  Therefore, under the blistering Californian sun, Gabby and I wandered and ended up on an empty yet maintained and recently sold loft in this part of the city.
The apartment’s high ceiling drew the illusion of expansiveness. Her mom being an owner of an Interior Design firm in San Diego, arranged the place to complement our boho chic and industrial design preference. The kitchen, with its wooden paneled cabinets and marble countertop  contrasted with the interior’s  black hardwood floors. The 360view of the city windows allowed natural light to seep through the crack in the grey curtains and when the night time comes, we could properly see the vibrant spectacles of the city.  The formerly study area was converted as Gabby’s room and the loft bedroom with black-framed floor to ceiling glass walls remained as my room. The stark white and soundproof walls proved to be more useful especially to the foul noises coming from the living room.
“Die, Die! Die! You bastard!” I stood up, shouted aggressively as I pressed my fingers harder on the console with obvious determination.
“Ohh! Such profanity! You kiss your mum with that mouth?” Tom retorted back below me, his ambidextrous fingers made hurried clicking noises with his as well. He’s leaning his elbows on his denim-covered knees, both of us transfixed on the television and the joysticks in between our resolute hands.
“Oh, piss off!” I responded pointedly, resuming my seat beside him.
It’s not unusual for Tom and Harrison  to be here early in the morning. Our days wasted away like this every single time we’re not working. They’ll  show up a minute after 8 am and sometimes with a sprightly Tessa. On a number of circumstances, when either men are too exhausted and drowsy to drive  we just let them crash in the couch. Tom at least. Below him would be Tessa on the extra dog bed I purchased just for her. Most times, my dog betrayed me and joined them downstairs, not wanting to part with his playmates.
Therefore, on this  humid Sunday morning, two weeks since the awards night, we’re indulging in  a video game he just bought, a game we’ve both been dying to get. I lost track of the time after Tom’s second win. I don’t usually mind losing, but with him, it’s  a whole different story.
Unbeknownst to the unlocking sound of the entrance door, we sat on the edge of our seats occasionally throwing in congenial insults to each other, someone entered the premise. An ineffable thing you learn when you live with someone, you can actually tell when they arrived by the sound of their footsteps or by the sound of their sighs when they breathe. A set of keys jangled into the plate that says “Keys” on the foyer table. Both our dogs, who were resting underneath the coffee table at the center of the room, rushed to the door. Four greeting barks.
Gabby entered with both her hands bearing two brown grocery bags and lightly slammed the door with her foot. I couldn’t see her but that’s what I was imagining her doing.
“Hey guys!” we could hear her shout breathily  from the kitchen. “Hey doggos! You want cookies?”
Tom and I answered with an absentminded “Hey!” Our laser focused attention not wavering off from the game.
“There’s a minor collision five streets away, that’s why we took a little longer than usual.” I heard her opened  the jar of cookies for the dogs then cans and bags of chips hit the marbled countertop of our kitchen.
“Uh-huh.” I said lazily, biting my lip as I try to come up with a strategy to my game.
“Where’s Harrison?” Tom slightly turned his body towards her voice, his eyes remained in front.  Her response drifted off as I saw Tom’s team finally found my troop’s headquarters, guns and bombs on hand.
“Why do you  make it so easy? Might as well give me that 50 right now.” I could hear the complacence in his voice. He slanted his body as he stirred his avatar’s car to the left and get out of it.
“You wish, Holland.”
“.... Speaking of which, you guys better be rea........ oh cmon!” Gabby continued. I heard the soft patters of her socked feet against the unblemished hardwood floors to where Tom and I were currently and comfortably lounging. A bowl of half-finished dry cheerios and four empty cans of juice on the wooden coffee table. The dogs had resumed their last position all the while staring at Gabby, waiting for another set of cookies.
“Really? For four hours now?” she breathed incredulously. Her arms folded impatiently on her chest.  I could feel the deathly glares on the back of our heads, I can’t risk confirming it by looking back. Tom’s avatar was circling back around the curb, right where I want him. I pressed a few buttons as I choose my killing weapon.
“You even haven’t taken a bath yet!!!” Her remark barely passing my ears as I quickly press the buttons of the joystick. She rounded from our backs to get a good look at our impaled positions on the sofa... or for us to take her disapproving annoyance.
“ I already did! Leave me alone!” Tom sounded like a teenager scolded by his mom for not cleaning his room. He was dressed effortlessly in his plain black shirt, jeans and his dark sneakers by the door, the curls on his head untamed.
“I’m not talking to you, idiot.” I could feel the penetrating and accusatory daggers she’s sending my way..
“C’mon guys, the program is in--- she glanced down at her watch—two hours. We have to drive there for an hour. Who knows if it’s gonna be totally jammed right now.” She demanded and stood by the accent chairs on our right side. Gabby doesn’t like being late.
As a favour to Harrison, Tom and I had agreed to join both of them in Gabby’s  hospitals’ feeding program, where she is currently a third year resident. Although her hospital’s a few blocks from here, the program will take place on the outskirts of the city, right where impoverished  US citizens are deprived. They needed extra pairs of volunteering hands as it was said to be a big annual event. Harrison popped the question while we’re all having dinner, because, even through the years of our friendship, he and Gabby were reluctant to take advantage of their status with that being close friends with Tom and I. They never asked us for help with anything hence, Tom and I were absolutely delighted to oblige.
“5 minutes, Gabs.” I promised half- heartedly, getting excited to rub  my brewing win to Tom’s smug face. “Besides I could get ready in like... ten minutes.” I  confidently reasoned back, still not looking her way. She exhaled and strode in front of us, blocking our view from the television mounted on the wall, her diminutive hands on her hips. Tom and I moved our heads synchronously on either side of her to watch the penultimate team battle with which we’re both engaged in.
“Look, thank you so much for doing this thing with me, and I love you both even more for it, but you’ve been playing since this morning.” She’s eyeing me heavily. Gabby did sound reasonable. As always. I hate it sometimes.
Tom’s persistent hands on his console receded, letting Gabby’s words sink in. His  attention affected from Gabby’s reason. With a gruff, “Tell me again, why am I going.” We stretched our necks, trying to find a better angle from Gabby’s impeding and unwavering authoritative stance in front.
“....Because you’re a good human being and you’re eternally grateful for Gabby’s existence and her relationship with your best mate that ended all those gay rumours a few years ago?” I stated in monotonous voice.
“On point.” Without taking our eyes off of the screen and for a second of truce, he raised his right hand to give me a high five, I struck it with my left.
We heard another commotion by the door and the dogs, once again, addressed the newcomer.
“Don’t tell me you idiots are still playing, we have to leave in 15 minutes! And it’s been two hours since we left!” Harrison reprimanded softly  and stopped at the back of the couch.. He then leaned  his elbows on the cushion behind and in between Tom and I. He too, tries to get a decent view of the LCD.
“So..who’s winning?” he excitedly added. If Gabby is the austere mom, Harrison is the fun dad, whereas Tom and I are the juvenile delinquents. I smiled despite myself, inching my way to the right end of the sofa, Tom doing the same thing on his left.
“Harrison!” Gabby all but shrieked at Harrison who chuckled.
“Right, right. Sorry babe.” He cleared his throat and I saw Gabby nod before Harrison walked out of the room.  Or so I thought.
“I’m coming for you Holla---hey! Hey! What are you doing!”
In a flush of movements, Harrison’s tall stature was in front of me, his forearms going under my leggings as he hauled me over his right shoulder like a sack of flour. Earning an adamant and incredulous protest from me.I saw  Tom’s right hand halted on his controller, his hands splayed out for a second of discombobulation as to why his opponent’s avatar suddenly stopped firing in the middle of the game, and then he noticed the hilarity of my position on his bestfriend’s shoulder. Instantly, he grabbed his phone on the carpeted floor of the living room, joystick laid on the table.
“Hey! Put me down jerk!! Harrison! Put me down this instant!” I ejaculated, pouncing on his broad back in futile attempts. He walked over and gave a peck to a smiling and proud Gabby. ‘Thanks babe.”
I groaned. “Tom! Help me!” Harrison gripped my shins together to stop me from squirming.  I cried out from my mortifying situation to Tom who completely abandoned the game I was wining. He positioned himself into a more comfortable way on the sofa, one of his foot under thigh and in both of his hands, his camera phone shook with laughter. My dog stood, confused and followed  Harrison’s shoulder. He placed his two front paws on Harrison’s back, making sure I wasn’t in trouble of any kind then back down on all fours again. Gabby stepped behind him, giving my dog a loving pat on the head.
The phone on Tom’s hand followed our movements as Harrison started to move away to literally drag my ass up to, I presume, Gabby and mine’s shared bathroom across to the kitchen.
“Sorry mate, he’s a.. um... a bit tall!” his hand tried to hold his phone while he continues to howl and shake in laughter. I slumped and pressed down my reddening face on Harrison’s back, defeated.
“This is absurd, you’re dead Harrison! You all are! I’m gonna kick you once I’m down from here. “ I looked up from Harrison’s Latissimus Dorsi  to threaten Tom and Gabby who were now practically skipping very much alike Snow White’s seven dwarves.
“Oh, wow, you really can be feisty. A few more minutes into that game and you’ll be saying the F word. “ I felt Harrison’s amused laugh from behind his nape which I’m currently glaring at.
“Told yah!” Tom interjected, chuckling before putting down his phone and barging in the kitchen.
Harrison dropped me with ease outside the bathroom door. He gave me an apologizing yet humorous smirk. I scowled at him.
“Hey! I’m just doing what she told me to!” He argued, his palms in mock surrender.
“Nah, you’re just a sap when it comes to my bestfriend. “ I replied with a chuckle as He took two steps into the open kitchen to resume helping Gabby who was already unpacking the rest of the items on our countertop, her back to us.
“And proud to be......not very unlike yourself. “He jokingly winked back at me, the last part barely a whisper. His head turned back to where Tom was pand my eyes took a cautious glimpse as he lingered by the opened fridge, humming to himself while he looked for a lunch snack, too concentrated on the task at hand to hear us. Our dogs, on their tails behind him. Harrison’s smile couldn’t get any nastier when he followed my eyes.. He reached out and ruffled my hair like an annoying big brother would.  I swatted his hand away. Gabby turned around at the sound of my groan, oblivious to me and her boyfriend’s silent exchange.
“What are you still standing there for? “ she asked rhetorically. With this, Tom looked at our direction and regarded us with a suspicious look, two greek yogurts on his hands.
“Your robe’s already inside. 10 minutes.” Gabby pointed to the bathroom subsequently unloading the last items inside the brown bag and stacking them into the customized Pantry cabinet under the staircase.
“Urgh. Yes Mum.” With a roll my eyes, I dragged my feet and closed the door behind an amused Harrison and bossy Gabby, and hungry Tom.
I put my hand under the running shower, testing the temperature first before going under. Not long did the rapid stream of lukewarm water drowned out the voices from the other side of the room and I was made aware of my solitude.
The past weeks regressed  to our normal mundane routine. Everyone has work for a few more weeks, til we fly back home to England with the exception of Gabby. Tom, Harrison and I hang out during the day, if we’re all unoccupied, doing chores or anything to keep ourselves amused.  Gabby will join us later in the afternoon or early in the evening, depending on her shift.
My mind drifted back to the brunet on the other side of the wall. He must be halfway through his-my- greek yogurt by now.
I caught the upward motion of my lips as I recall the ease that re-settled over us after the revel weeks ago.
I nervously threaded my fingers through my hair as Gabby and I sauntered to where Tom was animatedly chatting with Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield backstage. His team including Harrison was already there. Gabby gave me a sideway smirk. “What?”
Tobey and Andrew gave Tom one-armed hug as they said their goodbyes. When both gentlemen were out of sight, Gabby pulled Tom’s head under and between her armpits and messed his hair. “How dare you make me cry Holland!” Instinctively, Harrison caught the carved bronze sculpture that Tom is giving him. Gabby’s headlock never loosened . He could easily remove himself from the situation yet chosen not to.
When she let him go, Tom stretched his suit. “Crybaby.” He sneered at Gabby who poked out her tongue on him. Tom stepped into my open arms as I engulfed him in another congratulatory hug again.
“Was I ok?” he whispered against my naked shoulder, the contact made tiny tsunamis on my stomach.
Still within his embrace, “You were more than that.” I breathed to his ear. Then in a nescient and brazen move, I pressed a long kiss to the chiseled cheek I could reach.
I switched off the shower’s knob and coiled my hair in the towel I used for drying myself. I put my robe on and wiped the fog that clouded the mirror. I stared at my mouth as I recite the following words:
Tom and I are good friends. Just that. I don’t need to overthink it.  Stop overthinking it, alright?!” My reflection nodded and smiled.
Albeit, in the deepest and unexplored corner of my mind, a prisoner impatiently and furiously banged on the metal bars holding her captive.
The jazz music loomed over the ubiquitous speakers of the entire flat. The boys were in the kitchen, leaning on the countertop, heels crossed with each other. Their reflex turned to the opening creaks of the bathroom door; Harrison’s spoon and Tom’s doughnut halfway to their mouths. Tom immediately turned his back the other way while Harrison, nonchalantly looked down and continued to eat his food. Head bobbing in tune with the music. Tom elbowed him and he protested a “Bruv?” yogurt still on his tongue.
The dogs chased me as I ran up to my room, thinking I was in a gaming mood. I dressed myself in a button down long sleeves and tucked it in my best fitted jeans. I grabbed the small backpack on the floor before barging down the stairs. I’m anew and ready to go.
“I kept my word, 10 minutes!” Two men looked up from their phones for a minute and muttered a small and deadpanned “Yey!” I jogged down the stairs with two dogs right behind me. Gabby was nowhere in sight. I plopped down on the three-seater-couch beside Tom who was reading something on his phone. His dog nudged her head on his knees and took a seat beside his feet. She lie down on her back as his human started rubbing his socked feet on her warm belly. Though his face remained in a determined concentration, he clasped his free hand on my ankle when I pulled it up over his thighs naturally.
My flatmate must have cleaned the table while I was in the bath. Everything was in orderly fashion again like some page from an Interior Design magazine. The decorative vignettes that I removed on the table while I was playing with Tom was reinstated. Which made me look for the video game console strewn  under the 64 inches television.
“Oi! Where did our game go?” I exhorted at the two men beside me.
“Gabby confiscated them and locked it in her room. Apparently, she can’t trust me and Tom with it.” Harrison supplied, dropping his phone on the coffee table. “Which reminds me... I need a favour from you. Both of you.”  He uttered in an undertone.
With this, Me and Tom edged our bodies closer to where Harrison was sitting but Tom still holding on to both my feet.
“I don’t wanna kick you out of your own house mate, but um.. Can me and Gabby have this place for tonight? She doesn’t know but I planned something for her.” He confessed in a timid voice that I can’t help but smile.
“What? What did you plan to do?” Tom queried, excitement in his tone.
“Git! Don’t ask that! Don’t tell us!” I lightly smacked Tom’s head and frowned at him.
“Why do you always assume that I’m gonna do something promiscuous?” Glaring at Tom’s sheepish grin.
“Well, aren’t you gonna? “ we both raised our eyebrows at him.
“No! Well, yeah maybe....I got her a necklace, that’s all. And I planned to cook for her tonight. “ Harrison explained bashfully.
“What’s wrong with our place?” Tom chided, sounding butt-hurt
“Well, do we have a perfectly functioning oven?” Harrison accused
“Um.. no..” Tom grumbled.
“Do we have, I don’t know romantic high ceilings?” Harrison gestured dramatically over the modern drop lights above our 4-seater dining table.
“Well, no.”
“Is our flat clean?”
“Absolutely not.” Tom jested, Harrison’s facts dawning on him.
“Harrison, I got you. Let me grab an overnight bag.” I winked at him, stood up and shuffled his blonde hair.
“Thank you!!! You can sleep in my room.”  He smiled up at me.
I was rounding the dining table when I heard Tom complained,
“Uh no way man, We don’t know what kinds of shit are in your room. She’ll sleep in mine and I’ll sleep in yours.” Tom disclosed, laying his entire body on the spot I just vacated.  Harrison threw a nearby pillow on his face.
I packed lightly, just a two sets of clothes for later when I shower and for tomorrow. Gabby reemerged for her room, wearing a plain white deep v-neck shirt, jeans and ankle boots.
“What are you doing with an overnight bag?” She asked, noticing the duffle bag on my shoulder. Before I could lie,
“We’ll continue our game at me and Harrison’s place tonight.” Tom shuffled from the hall, wiping his hands with the dish towel and I could see the dogs bent over two food bowls in the kitchen.
“Why can’t you do it here?”
“Because, you’re gonna be here. We can’t concentrate if you’re just gonna peek out and shout from  your room every now and then. And you have work tomorrow.” Tom shrugged.
“Good point.” Gabby frowned in agreement.
“Oh and I’m gonna bring my baby too. The vet said that I should keep an eye on him." That part was wholly true. I stretched an elbow on Tom’s shoulders and stared back at Gabby, acting natural as possible. Which is funny, considering Tom and I were such professional liars.
“Ok fine.  Guys, Listen up. This is the plan.” She clapped her hands, the action reminded me of a soccer coach about to give his students a pep talk before a big game.
“It’s 12:14, we have be at the tents by 2pm. We’re gonna load those boxes on the car, Harrison would drive. We’re gonna drop the dogs to your apartment, 10 blocks away, maybe it'll take just 10 minutes tops and off we go. Capisce?” she said in one breath.
“Maam, yes, maam!”

Want to be on my tag list for this story?
You woke up that Friday morning much earlier than you were used to. Glancing back now, it feels almost like your body was warning you that something was coming, something unnatural for your city and for you all together. You should have paid more attention then, should have seen the signs before it all happened.
It was strange stirring in your bed at the time, only to hear the chirping birds outside your window as they greet the first burst of sunlight on the horizon instead of the quietness of the afternoon you usually hear. It was still fairly dim in your bedroom, and Tom — usually the early riser — wasn’t even up. You glanced over at the clock on your nightstand, noting the time of 6:03 a.m. that sits on its screen in red type. And while you want to go back to sleep, you know that you’re already up, and there’s no going back now.
So, you slid out of your bed, being careful not to wake up your boyfriend whose light snores were currently echoing around the room. He looked adorable, almost angelic, in between your white sheets. His hair is mussed and his face is void of any tension. It’s the last time you’ll see him this calm for a while.
You avoided that spot in your hardwood floor that usually creaks when someone approaches it, and slipped out of your bedroom. You decided to take a quick shower and once you saw a big red star marked on your calendar for the next day, you figured that a nice breakfast would help your boyfriend a lot.
You whipped together some French toast, eggs, and breakfast potatoes, all of which you knew Tom favored in the mornings. When you finally wrapped up, your bedroom door swung open again and Tom stepped out. He had a confused expression across his face, which quickly disappeared once he laid eyes on you.
“Morning darling,” he greeted, coming up to give you a quick peck on the lips. You smile and hand him a plate full of food. “You didn’t have to do this, you know.”
“I know,” you replied, “but I was up anyway and I figured you needed it. Is it the short film you helped out with coming up?”
He shook his head. “Nah, just a wedding video, but these are some fairly important clients that could lead to something bigger in the future. I told you that Harrison is filling in for me today?”
You nod your head. “He knows what time we start?”
“I gave him the full brief of how things work and he knows to call if he has any problems.”
You let out a long sigh. “It’s gonna be weird without you. First pod you’re not there for.” He frowned and gave your hand a comforting squeeze.
“I know, love, but it’ll be great.”
***
Some people were interested in Greek mythology, others in science. Growing up, you were always worried when you didn’t quite find your niche thing to be obsessed about. While all the other kids talked about their love of horses or in Pokémon, you always tucked yourself in the back corner and buried yourself in a Nancy Drew book.
Soon, Nancy Drew and Scooby Doo turned into an obsession with Psych, Criminal Minds and Law & Order: SVU. You remembered when you were younger, how you laid across your floor to listen to Nancy Grace figure out more about the Casey Anthony trial. You’d obsessively scroll through Washington Post, CNN, and other news outlets’ justice or crime section. It wasn’t until you were older that you realized true crime was your hobby, your niche.
So, you went to school and got a degree in journalism. And about halfway through your university career, you’d gone to a college party, gotten drunk, and started talking about the details of the Texas Killing Fields. Other people slowly floated away, becoming uninterested in the conversation and not understanding why you wanted to talk about something so horrific. Across the room, there was a girl who looked at you with pure excitement stretched across her face. She practically leaped over to you and said, “Tell me everything.”
About a year later, you and her became best friends. Her name was Zendaya Coleman, different than yours, but you were pretty sure she was a carbon copy of you otherwise. You’d watch Psych together, and then rewatch it over and over again once the series ended. Other times, you’d stay up late and watch documentaries about unsolved cases and general ones centered on the justice department.
One day, you had a broadcast journalism cast final you needed help with in terms of filming. You’d been recommended Tom in passing conversation for help, and soon, you met him for coffee and told him all the ideas you had. (At the time, you hadn’t noticed the sudden glimmer in his eye when he looked at you. It wouldn’t be for a few more months that you would.) When he came over to your house later that week, you finished the project together, with Zendaya co-anchoring, and celebrated its completion over wine.
When both you and Z went into your usual drunk talk about unsolved cases, Tom looked at the two of you with interest and then spit out, “Holy shit, have you guys ever thought of making this a podcast?”
And now, nearly three years later, a drunk idea led to success you never could dream about. It took you a while to actually kick off the podcast — two years after that fateful night. Now, a year into the whole gig, your podcast was consistently in the top 50 on the iTunes charts, and you had a whole fan base that always engaged with you on all social media.
You hosted it with Zendaya once a week. Episodes usually ranged for about an hour and a half, filled with your dialogue surrounding situations with serial killers or cults. Tom worked as the quiet producer, who always sat silently in the corner to make sure your microphones were consistently operating at the level they should be.
It was a nice way to live. You had a flexible schedule, and though you had plans for an upcoming tour, you could all stay in your respective homes within your quiet town.
When the knock came at your door that day, you took a quick peek through the peephole in your door, smiling when you saw your best friend on the other side. You swung the door open, immediately greeting her with a hug.
“Hey Z,” you greeted. You opened the door wider, noticing she had a bag in hand.
“I went to Cheesecake Factory earlier, and you know I hella brought cheesecake back,” she said. She plopped the bag on your table. You opened the bag, a smile coming to your face when you saw the slice of Oreo cheesecake she bought for you. You thanked her, shuffling around your drawers and cabinets for plates and cutlery. When you returned with the proper dishware, you noticed the off expression on your friend’s face. She was looking around thoughtfully, like something wasn’t quite sitting right with her.
“What’s up?” you asked, passing the plate over. She pulled out her own slice of cheesecake from the bag.
“I think this is the first time I’ve come to your home and Tom hasn’t been here,” she joked. “Even when we’re not recording, he’s almost always here.” You laughed at the observation.
“He actually chose to go to his home today. He’s got a big deadline coming up this weekend, and said I was ‘too distracting.’” You pulled out the air quotes at the end, and Zendaya rolled her eyes playfully.
“Boy needs to learn to keep his dick in his pants,” she teased, taking a bite out of her cheesecake. “But if Tom isn’t here, who’s gonna be the sound guy?” You bit your lip.
“Okay, so hear me out,” you said, raising up your hands already defensive. Zendaya deadpanned.
“Please tell me Tom didn’t hire Colton Lancaster,” she begged. You narrowed your eyes.
“What? No, ew.” She let out a sigh of relief. “Why would you even—“
“He’s the only other audio guy I know in town! His news podcast is a little bit boring content wise, but he’s got some nice audio going.” You giggled and shook your head.
“Nah, apparently, Harrison has audio experience.” Zendaya raised her eyebrows.
“Quiet one? Stutters when he does talk?” You laughed.
“He was only nervous because he thinks you’re cute! But yeah, him. Tom told me when they did theater together back in high school he was always the sound guy before he made his debut on the stage.”
“Oooh okay Harrison, I see you. When is he coming?” You checked your watch.
“He said he’s going to run a little bit late, but he should be here in about three more minutes.”
As if you summoned him yourself, the doorbell rang. You glanced at the door, then back at your friend, “Or maybe right now.”
You strode over to the door again, swinging it open and greeting the man of the hour. Harrison looked a little bit lost as he stepped into the foyer of your home. He had a backpack slung on his back and his hands were digging in his pockets.
“Hey Harrison,” Zendaya called out. “You like cheesecake?” Harrison blushed slightly.
“Uh, hey Zendaya. And uh, yeah, I do…” He looked back over at you, seeking some reassurance. You gave him a nod.
In truth, you still didn’t know Harrison that well, despite dating his roommate for a little over two years at this point and seeing him more than a handful of times. Yet, you still considered him a good friend, and Tom told you Harrison thought the same of you. Maybe you weren’t knowledgeable on the intimate details of his life, but you understood him and his quietness. And most of all, you respected each other.
“Zendaya bought some from Cheesecake Factory,” you explained, as you stepped into your main dining area.
“You can have the other half of my slice,” Zendaya offered. “I’m stuffed.”
“Oh, thanks,” Harrison replied. “I should probably start on getting you lot set up though.”
Zendaya waved it off and said, “No rush.” He shot you a look, silently asking for your permission.
“Yeah, c’mon Harrison, hang out with us for a bit. We’re just chatting.”
With that, he smiled, plopped in the chair next to Zendaya, and started eating the cheesecake she offered him.
“So, what’s the tea in your life, Harrison?” you asked.
He raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
“Anything exciting going on? New shows you’re involved in?” He shook his head.
“Just summer classes, lots of studying. I work at Soul Cycle, which is laid back.” He shrugged, then seemed to mull over something. “Though, we did have a couple arguing today in the shop. Don’t know about what, but it’s the most exciting thing to happen in there in a week.”
“That’s the trinket shop on the east side of town right?” Zendaya asked. Harrison nodded his head.
“Very small, but pays well.” Zendaya looked at you pointedly.
“We need to go there.”
You let out a short laugh. “Why?”
“They have crystals! With all the shit that we talk, we probably need to cleanse our energies,” Zendaya insisted. “Besides, we can see Haz.”
He blushed at the nickname and you tried to hold back a smile.
“It’s not a bad idea,” he murmured. Zendaya gave you an “I-told-you-so” look. “Really, I never used to believe in any of that. Always thought it was rubbish, but then Madame Auboin changed my life around.” He shrugged. “You never quite know what’ll happen to you. Best to take some preventative measures to make sure you’re keeping all of that out.”
And so finally, you agreed to go with Z and Harrison after enough convincing. Besides, everyone in town loved the owner, Diane Auboin.
After more conversation and eating, you finally went into your spare room that acted as your recording studio. Harrison sat at the computer, prepping everything up in the room, while you went over your unsolved crime again silently in your head and scrolled through the main talking points on your phone.
He gave you both the cue to start and you gave the introduction. “Welcome to ‘Anatomy of a Murder,’ where we dissect all the creepy shit serial killers pull so you don’t have to. Because let’s face it, it’s hard balancing work life with fighting off creeps.”
You were about halfway through the show when your phone started ringing loudly. Zendaya stopped mid-sentence and asked, “Did you forget to put your phone on Do Not Disturb?”
You shook your head. “Um, no, it’s Tom actually. He knows we’re recording, so he wouldn’t call unless something’s up.
Harrison pressed the stop recording button on the computer and you picked up the phone.
“Hey babe, you okay?” you asked, stepping out of the room.
“Oh, Y/N, thank God. You’re at home, right? Harrison and Zendaya are still with you?” he asked. There was traces of panic in his voice and you grew more concerned.
“Yeah… why? What’s going on?”
“Stay put, I’m on my way to your house right now. Don’t move, okay darling?”
“I won’t,” you promised, hanging up. You stepped back into the recording studio. “Tom just did the weirdest—”
But you stopped speaking when you saw their facial expressions. They were both staring in horror out of something on Zendaya’s phone. They both looked up at you and you saw Harrison visibly gulp.
“What’s up?” you inquired. Zendaya looked up at Harrison, then back at you, clearly at a complete loss at words.
Finally, she spoke, “They found a body out by Kinakee Lake. Well, two actually.”
She passed you the phone and you saw a photograph of police vans over by the lake on the outskirts of the city limits. The headline read, “Two found dead at Kinakee Lake,” and naturally, had Colton Lancaster’s byline.
You heard the door ring and swallowed, passing the phone back over. “That has to be Tom,” you said.
You usually check the peephole before you open the door, but in your pure panic and eagerness to see your boyfriend, you neglected to do so. So, you swung the door open again that day, shocked when you saw a man and a woman standing at your front door with police badges adorning their suits.
“Are you Y/N Y/L/N?” the female officer asked.
“Yes, that would be me,” you answered.
“You’re wanted at the police station for questioning over two bodies recently discovered at Kinakee Lake.”

Lipstick Stains and Photos of You
Description: Bill wants to capture the intimate moments between you two with his favorite polaroid camera.
Author’s Note: I know this probably sucks but I will be writing better stuff during Christmas break because college is kicking my ass right now.
Warnings: daddy kink, dom!bill, swearing, smut
It was around 4:30 pm when Bill had gotten home from one of his film classes. He found you cooking in the kitchen while you were swaying and lip syncing along to “Faded Heart” by BØRNS. Bill laughed at the sight of you,
“Hey Y/N, how was your day?”
You pecked his soft lips before returning back to stir the pot on the stove,
“It was good. My professor let us out early so I had time to clean up the apartment some and cook us this fucking delicious meal were about to have. How about you?”
He took his black messenger back off his shoulder and took out his video camera.
“My day was fine, I got assigned a project in film class today though. Were supposed to make a short film about anything we want, yet I have no fucking clue what I plan to do,” he said taking a sip of the warm vegetable soup you had in the pot.
“You could make it about me!” you said jokingly.
Bill laughed as his eyes wandered down and he stopped when he realized that you were wearing one of shirts. However, what intrigued him about this was the fact you weren’t wearing bottoms underneath the shirt, but instead just a pair of black polka dot panties. Every time you would reach up to one of the cabinets, or over the stove, the shirt would hike up a little displaying your cute panties. An idea then sparked in his head.
                                                     ***
Dinner was finished and you were rinsing your dish out in the sink when two lanky arms wrapped around your waist. You fell back into Bill’s touch as he began to pepper your neck in kisses. Then, just like that, his grip tightened on your hips,
“Now listen here baby doll, Daddy wants you to go upstairs and put on your favorite lingerie and get all pretty for me. I’ll be up in 15 minutes and I better see you on that bed when I come in. Got it?”
“Yes Daddy,” you breathed.
He let you go and you made your way upstairs to your closet. You decided on the royal blue baby doll nightie you had. It was sheer and cascaded against your body so beautifully when you moved and….it was one of Bill’s favorites on you. You touched up your hair a little before rushing over to the bed. It was a few minutes later that he finally walked in. He moaned at the sight of you as he made his way over. He wrapped his arms around you kissing down your neck and collarbones,
“You look so fucking pretty baby, and smell so fucking sweet, I could just eat you up.” “Why don’t you Daddy?” you said innocently batting your eyelashes at him.
He chuckled and walked away from you stepping outside the bedroom again. You were confused when he walked in hiding something behind his back, “Baby, I’ve got a surprise for you tonight. If you don’t like it then we won’t do it, but I think you’ll really enjoy this.” He pulled out his old polaroid camera.
“Your little joke about being in my short film gave me an idea. If you’re up to it, I wanna take some intimate photos of you tonight.”
Your face grew warm as you began to feel both flustered and very turned on, “
“Yes Daddy, let’s do it.”
He smirked as he began to fiddle with his camera,
“Now, I want you to lay against the pillows and spread your legs for me Angel. I want to see your pretty little pussy for this first shot.”
You did as he said and spread your legs giving a sultry look to the camera,
*SNAP*
“Perfect baby,” he said as he prepared the camera for another picture. “Now, start playing with your clit until I tell you to stick two fingers in your pussy. Don’t you fucking dare think about cumming without permission either.” `
You began to rub your clit feeling the slickness of your folds from already being turned on earlier. Bill had an obvious hard on pressed up against his dark skinny jeans as he rubbed his hand against it.
“Oh D-Daddy can you finger fuck me instead? Nothing compares to how you do it,” you asked twisting your eyes shut as you started rubbing faster against your clit.
 *SNAP*
“Yes, only because my kitten is doing such a good job,” he said.
He walked over and stuck two of his fingers in your mouth and let you suck on them which only ensued another picture.
*SNAP*
He stuck his middle finger in first and soon after his ring finger. He began doing the c’mere motions causing you to writhe and gasp. He was so entranced by you he almost forgot he was supposed to be taking pictures of you. He quickly grabbed his camera with his free hand and snapped another picture of you moaning in pleasure.
*SNAP*
“N-No more photos Daddy please. Just need your cock in me,” you said.
Bill quickly set the camera on the table and removed his fingers from you as you let out a whimper from the loss. He quickly stripped off his sweater, jeans, and underwear and crawled back towards you on the bed.
“You’re so fucking beautiful Y/N” he said, ravaging your body in kisses. Your own red lipstick was marked up all over his neck and face and you made a mental note to take a picture of that later.
He slid into you with ease and began thrusting into you. His mouth pressing into yours for a hardening kiss as you moaned into each other’s mouths.
“Is this what you wanted baby? Is daddy making you feel good?” he asked. You let out the most pornographic moan which only made him quicken his pace.
Your legs were shaking and you were going to reach your climax soon and he knew it.
“Are you about to cum baby? Go ahead and cum all over daddy’s cock like a good girl” he said snaking his hand down to rub furiously against your clit.
“F-Fuck Bill!” you screamed as the waves of your orgasm tore through your body which shortly led to his orgasm. He collapsed next to you on the bed after pulling out. The whole room was silent besides the sound of your heavy breathing. He pulled you into his chest and kissed your head. Remembering the mental note you made, you reached over and grabbed the camera snapping the picture of him covered in your lipstick marks.
“I cannot wait to get these printed,” you said giving his lips a peck with a sly smile.
