Hello,
Recently, I've been having issues with my work-issued computer overheating while trying to respond to my e-mails. What is the best fix for this? Also... are singed wires covered in the company's electronics insurance plan?
Thank you for your time,
@bonpyrestarter
Hello, Mr. Bonpyre. I apologize, but I believe your computer overheating is due to... external factors. I wish you luck on your endeavor to cool your computer down.
And yes, singed wires are covered under the electronics insurance plan. Please bring the damaged equipment to my office at your earliest convenience, and I will submit a request for a replacement. Thank you.

Friendly reminder that Wix.com is an Israeli-based company (& some website builders to look into instead)
I know the BDS movement is not targeting Wix.com specifically (see here for the companies they're currently boycotting) but since Wix originated in Israel as early as 2006, it would be best to drop them as soon as you can.
And while you're at it, you should leave DeviantArt too, since that company is owned by Wix. I deleted my DA account about a year ago not just because of their generative AI debacle but also because of their affiliation with their parent company. And just last month, DA has since shown their SUPPORT for Israel in the middle of Israel actively genociding the Palestinian people 😬
Anyway, I used to use Wix and I stopped using it around the same time that I left DA, but I never closed my Wix account until now. What WAS nice about Wix was how easy it was to build a site with nothing but a drag-and-drop system without any need to code.
So if you're using Wix for your portfolio, your school projects, or for anything else, then where can you go?
Here are some recommendations that you can look into for website builders that you can start for FREE and are NOT tied to a big, corporate entity (below the cut) 👇👇
Carrd.co
Tumblr media
This is what I used to build my link hub and my portfolio, so I have the most experience with this platform.
It's highly customizable with a drag-and-drop arrangement system, but it's not as open-ended as Wix. Still though, it's easy to grasp & set up without requiring any coding knowledge. The most "coding" you may ever have to deal with is markdown formatting (carrd provides an on-screen cheatsheet whenever you're editing text!) and section breaks (which is used to define headers, footers, individual pages, sections of a page, etc.) which are EXTREMELY useful.
There's limits to using this site builder for free (max of 2 websites & a max of 100 elements per site), but even then you can get a lot of mileage out of carrd.
mmm.page
Tumblr media
This is a VERY funny & charming website builder. The drag-and-drop system is just as open-ended as Wix, but it encourages you to get messy. Hell, you can make it just as messy as the early internet days, except the way you can arrange elements & images allows for more room for creativity.
Straw.page
Tumblr media
This is an extremely simple website builder that you can start from scratch, except it's made to be accessible from your phone. As such, the controls are limited and intentionally simple, but I can see this being a decent website builder to start with if all you have is your phone. The other options above are also accessible from your phone, but this one is by far one of the the simplest website builders available.
Hotglue.me
Tumblr media
This is also a very simple & rudimentary website builder that allows you to make a webpage from scratch, except it's not as easy to use on a mobile phone.
At a glance, its features are not as robust or easy to pick up like the previous options, but you can still create objects with a simple double click and drag them around, add text, and insert images or embeds.
Mind you, this launched in the 2010s and has likely stayed that way ever since, which means that it may not have support for mobile phone displays, so whether or not you wanna try your hand at building something on there is completely up to you!
Sadgrl's Layout Editor
Tumblr media
sadgrl.online is where I gathered most of these no-code site builders! I highly recommend looking through the webmaster links for more website-building info.
This simple site builder is for use on Neocities, which is a website hosting service that you can start using for free. This is the closest thing to building a site that resembles the early internet days, but the sites you can make are also responsive to mobile devices! This can be a good place to start if this kind of thing is your jam and you have little to no coding experience.
Although I will say, even if it sounds daunting at first, learning how to code in HTML and CSS is one of the most liberating experiences that anyone can have, even if you don't come from a website scripting background. It's like cooking a meal for yourself. So if you want to take that route, then I encourage to you at least try it!
Most of these website builders I reviewed were largely done at a glance, so I'm certainly missing out on how deep they can go.
Oh, and of course as always, Free Palestine 🇵🇸

LA County GET FUCKED
I got a jury summons earlier this year, but was in the middle of contract negotiations, so I post-poned to this week. I thought I knew where I'd put my jury summons for the portal registration. Get up this morning to call in and see if I actually have to report, can't find it.
No problem, the website lists this phone number you can call.
Tumblr media
Note: it SPECIFICALLY says you can call if you've lost your JID or Pin #.
So I call. It's an automated line.
No problem, surely one of the options is "if you lost your juror ID."
No such luck. But the first option is "to call about reporting." So I select that. First thing it asks for: YOUR JUROR ID.
No problem. I'll try another option.
I'll try ALL THE FUCKING OPTIONS. THERE IS NO OPTION THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE YOUR ID #. THERE IS NO OPTION TO SPEAK TO A PERSON.
IF THE DAMN THING DOESN'T UNDERSTAND YOU, IT HANGS UP.
I'm cussing and swearing at the damn robot. I have to either leave for work or for summons, I don't know which. Maybe I left the summons at work - I think I maybe did the initial schedule change at work. I look up another number to try and get in the car.
I call the actual courthouse and reach a person, I'm honestly tearing up a bit with frustration as I tell her the issue and that I know it's not her problem, but can she please help. She gives me another number to try.
I call it. It's out of service.
I cry some more on my way into work. In the parking lot, I find another number for the general court of the county. I call a sweet angel of a human being, who apparently also recently got summons, but she's moving out of state, so she's just not going to go. What are they going to do? "track [her] down in South Carolina?" Anyway, she gives me another number to call, but tells me they're only available 11 am - 2pm, 3pm-5pm. USELESS as I need to call this morning. She tells me just to call when I can and explain the situation.
I get to work, done with crying, moving into pure rage at this point.
I search my whole desk. Can't find the summons. Decide to give the internet search one more go. Find a Reddit thread about this VERY ISSUE! It has a special work around for the first phone number: wait until you get to the list of options, then hit * 0.
I try this: it MAGICALLY UNLOCKS A QUEUE TO SPEAK TO A REAL PERSON!!! I'm now 53rd in line!!!
And before you think, oh this must be a symptom of all those recent government cuts:
THE REDDIT THREAD IS FROM 7 YEARS AGO!!!!!
Tumblr media
FUCKING HELL. This is a KNOWN ISSUE!!!!
Wish I'd known there's already a known work around they could have fucking listed on the website so I could have added that to my complaint to the webmaster.
Tumblr media
Guess I know what to tell them if/when they reply.
Reblog to save someone else in LA County from hell: Call (213) 972-0970 - wait for the list of options, then press * followed by 0 to get to the real person call line.

A disgruntled Tumblrina (gender-neutral) made a website and why you should too.
Or "reject social media, return to personal websites".
PART 1: THE PART WHERE I CONVINCE YOU TO MOVE TO PERSONAL WEBSITES
So, the Web 2.0 social media infested landscape seems to be crumbling before our very eyes. Reddit's leadership is increasingly greedy, Twitter is sinking under the weight of Elon's massive, yet increasingly fragile ego, Tumblr is slowly turning into another lifeless corpo-fest, complete with the layout, Instagram continues to be vapid and soulless and Facebook seems to be going the way of MySpace.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(feel free to check the alt text on these, btw)
In these troubling times, where everything looks the same and you're expected to be milked for every dollar you're worth, what is a disgruntled Internet surfer such as yourself to do? Move to an untested alternative that's bound to get overrun by fascists thanks to poor moderation? Stay the course on the sinking ships you're used to?
Well, what if I told you that we've solved this problem way back in the 90's and early 2000's and were merely duped by the Big Zuck into forgetting our legacy? What if there was a cure for the sanitized, dull social media hellscape?
Tumblr media
It takes a bit of work, when compared to just using a social media site, but even if your particular use case makes switching difficult (ex. an artist looking to promote their work), it's still a good secondary option to consider.
The core appeal is the ability to customize and individualize, make a corner of cyberspace unabashedly yours,
It can also be an exciting avenue of creative expression, giving whatever you want to say a unique coat of paint,
Most website hosting services are a bit more lax about what you can do on them, due to changes in the profit structure (rather than depending on advertisers and investors, they either have a premium option to give supporters perks, have another product, or, in the case of paid services, you renting that space IS the product),
If you want your website to be more accomodating and accessible, you don't have to file tons of feedback - do it yourself,
If you'd like to connect with other webmasters and promote each other's websites, we have webrings - sets of circular links that connect websites with something in common, be it a topic, aesthetic or friend group,
You're less likely to have your stuff purged by an ill-advised change in policy (especially if you have a backup of your files somewhere),
The more people do it, the less power those massive social media corpos have over the internet,
It can be a load of fun!
If I have you convinced, keep reading into part 2. If you just wanna see what I did, skip to part 3. If neither, feel free to continue scrolling. I won't hold it against you. You'll be missing out, that's all.
PART 2: SO, YOU WANNA MAKE A WEBSITE!
Good choice, here's some resources!
sadgrl's absolute beginner's guide to Neocities - what it says on the tin!
W3Schools - a more in-depth tutorial site, a learning resource so excellent it substituted for what I was supposed to learn in technical highschool (because our teacher just told us to go on W3Schools instead of teaching us shit)
A list of free layouts for your website - whether to use as a base to learn from or to simply take for yourself,
Neocities - the posterchild for free website hosting for personal websites. Doesn't allow video or audio, but you can get around that by linking those files from elsewhere. Beginner-friendly to a fault - once you have an account just drag and drop your files in,
Gitlab (& Gitlab Pages) - a more advanced option, but it has a few advantages of its own. Gitlab is a website hoster second and a version control service first - which is programmer speak for "keeps track of changes in your code and stores a backup of it online". it helps a lot when working on multiple devices or co-writing with a friend. And secondly, you can use Gitlab Actions to automate putting your website up (even on Neocities, like I do!)
My askbox - I am not joking, if you have any questions about any of this, I'd love nothing more than to help you out!
But with most of my indie web propaganda out of the way, it's time.
PART 3: Welcome to Timewatcher OS.
Tumblr media
Of course, because I couldn't be normal when it comes to making a website, I had to turn it into a fake operating system. Each subpage is an "app", opened in a separate embed window. It has unlockable wallpapers (no pay2win, prommy). There's bideo games on it! I even made a music player for it so I can share my incongruent music tastes!
Like I said in my Tumblr bio, if I ever go radio silent for more than a month, it means I've gotten fed up with this hellsite and moved to my own homepage permamently. And I highly advise you make an option like this for yourself too! Lastly, if any of y'all would like to start a webring, do let me know in the askbox - I'm down to manage it if I'm not alone in there.
Anyways, I hope I convinced you to make a website, or at least check out some of the cool sites you've been missing out on! Hope to see you on the Old Web!

ok so on top of me being a diet film major at school i'm also on the executive staff of my school's college radio station and that combined with omgcp means it's headcanon time!
you're listening to 91.7 WSMU-FM. don't turn that dial!
lardo started doing radio to keep up the promise to do something technical to her parents after becoming an art major. she chose radio tech ops and programming because it was a chill and easy gig that didn't take too much time out of her day. she ended up being pretty decent at her job and later became known for her cable management skills.
jack first met lardo when he was dating camilla and eventually got involved with the station as a graveyard shift dj to hang out with camilla more as friends (#studentathletethings). lardo often took on the late-night shifts for tech ops, which is just making sure the station doesn't go down in the middle of the night, and noticed that Jack wouldn't use the automated software and do everything manually from spinning tracks to doing his talk breaks live. eventually they became friends over "the old days of radio" and jack referred lardo to becoming the smh team manager.
holster acted as a consultant to the promotions and PR team for one of his finals and observed a morning shift as part of the project. the "bro, we should start a podcast" part of his brain was promptly activated and convinced ransom to do a morning show with him. they mostly talk about college sports and get very heated over college hockey and how much cornell has fallen as a hockey team.
shitty grew up listening to wsmu and used radio as another way to be rebellious against his family. he appreciates the community service and outreach the station does and is ranked the best voice on the station. he hosts a show about local music in samwell and the greater boston area.
bitty joined the promo team after smh found out about his blog and convinced him to join radio after they all realized they did radio together. eventually he became the webmaster of the station's website because he was the only one other than shitty that knew how to use wordpress. his ego grew after he forced hosts to write blog posts during their shifts for the station website and be active on twitter.
chowder used to dj local events in high school and was a pretty decent dj and producer back in the day. when he found out the rest of the team was pretty much doing radio he convinced a radio show about live dj sets boiler room-style.
(side note: farmer finds out about chowder's secret life as a dj through a girl on the volleyball team who's friends with a wsmu sportscaster who knows holster.)
dex found himself working in tech ops after a freak accident involving the station's backup recording software went down. he ended up staying because it's the only non-hockey or non-school thing he had.
nursey was approached to be on the station's student spotlight show for his poetry and found out that the whole team was working on the station. he then romanticized the image of analog radio in his mind and what being a late-night DJ was like. he immediately switched to a mid-day jazz shift the next semester.
i swear i have more but i still have fics i need to write before posting more LMAO

Tumblr Growth - Its tough trying to face the world from inside Tumblr.
I used a service called Make | Automation Software | Connect Apps & Design Workflows | Make to push my Youtube videos (All of them that I could on a free plan) to Tumblr - ive been also forming connections and commenting and being part of the community. I had issues where it would post the link to the video, well the ID and I had to manually push the you tube url video = [VideoID] but it didnt embed so I have been editing them one by one to properly embed them and tag them. Its paying off slowly, also pushing thebritbeardo.tumblr.com to the world, frustrated that tumblr is blocking bing bot and @tumblrsupport in a reddit thread said speak to Bing, Bing does not control robots.txt for my site so I kindly asked and will continue to ask tumblr support to remove the block to bingbot, I have sent screenshots from bing webmaster tools. Also, Google is not properly indexing britbeardo.tumblr.com because its not the canonical URL and no matter the tags I put in the html it seems that there is a tumblr controlled canonical url that is set to tumblr.com/accountname. All the canonical testers tell me this.
It seems they are really focusing on users using internal tumblr network and not reaching out to potentially new tumblr users. Its a shame as if you configure Tumblr correctly, follow the right people its actually a much better social environment that Facebook or X, Threads, Masterdon etc. I use them all pretty much and found Tumblr to be a breath of fresh air except for these few frustrations.
@TumblrSupport please allow users more control of blocked search engines in the robots.txt, even if its a check box for allow Yandex, Allow BingBot etc. And give us control of the canonical URL, if I put a Tag in my HTML to override please honor my request to use account.tumblr.com I considered buying a domain but in still concerned that using a domain will cause me to still blocked by bingbot and not have control of the canonical settings.

OASIS FAN SITE SHUTDOWN BY COURT Derek Gorman’s Oasis fan site shut down by Sony, Creation
Tumblr media
For Immediate Release: August 18, 1997
(London) - In the first legal action against an Oasis fan site owner, Sony and Creation Records filed an injunction to shut down Derek Gorman’s Oasis fan site. The injunction was filed after it was discovered that several sound clips from unreleased tracks from the upcoming Be Here Now album were on the site.
Gorman had distributed clips from several songs on his web site after downloading them from the Sony Music Brazil website, however was not selling them. Sony Music Entertainment (UK) contacted Gorman’s Internet service provider and had his webpage terminated August 12. Sony and Creation Records filed a “writ of summons” to prevent further distribution of the unreleased materials.
“I think this action is unfortunate,” said Jack Martin, head of the Oasis Webmasters for Internet Freedom. “While one of the original concerns of Oasis’ management was that songs would be released on the Internet before the official release date, the files in question were already available through one of Sony’s sites.”
Martin reaffirmed the OWIF’s support of Oasis’ right to determine when songs will be released. “There is a difference between publishing part of songs that have already been released or a photo from the official site, and publishing clips from songs that have yet to be released.” The fact that the songs were already available through an official source blurs the line between what is released or unreleased, he continued. “Whether or not this action would have been taken if the album was already on the market remains to be seen,” he said.
While acknowledging Oasis’ right to release new material, the OWIF still maintains the right of fan site owners to use many other copyrighted materials, providing the use falls under the “fair use” doctrine (“fair dealing” in the UK.)
Martin added that he thought that this action would not affect the majority of Oasis sites, saying it was an “isolated incident” and noted that the official release date for BHN is just days away, making any further early release incidents unlikely.
Another writ was filed at approximately the same time against Steven Crockett. Crockett had allegedly been selling copies of all or part of BHN.
###
UPDATE: Derek's site is now back online after he signed an agreement with Sony's attorneys.

I get that your favorite pet site being DDOS'd is stressful, but some of you need to take off your tinfoil hats about the DDOS thing. DDOSing is an incredibly common internet occurrence. One time a rabbit care forum I was on was overwhelmed for over a week solid, for some reason, and then it just went away. All that happens is you can't access the site if the protection service is lousy or the webmaster decides to shut service off to wait out the weirdos. It's dirt cheap to run a service-denial attack. People do it for fun. There is absolutely NO proof that those people who claimed credit for the AO3 attack were the ones actually behind it. There is NO proof they are the ones flooding FR. DDOSing is a crime and any sane person isn't going to admit to it in public. There is even less evidence supporting the theory that it's a state sponsored extortion attack targeting niche pet sites comprised mostly of minors with no personal income. I cannot emphasize enough that these sorts of attacks are extremely commonplace on the internet, and just because nearly all major social networking/streaming is owned by the same mega-corporation who can afford absurd levels of ddos mitigation doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
If you don't' believe me please feel free to research it yourself before getting panicked over FR getting DDOS'd. Technically the userbase has accidentally DDOS'd it offline several times in the past during big releases lol. It's just a petty thing that weirdos on the internet do to try and disrupt service, it can get expensive depending on how dedicated said weirdo is, but it's not going to bug out the servers to the point they'll be unusable and user data will be wiped (unless they're already barely functional, but that's another issue). It literally just prevents people from accessing the site by overloading traffic. Like trying to fit too many people through a doorway. Seems like the attacks are over already anyway. Frankly with how popular FR is I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner lol. If you see the numbers spiking again just take a breath and relax, it's just a waiting game! Inconvenient, but nothing that will kill the site.
