What could Hamas have done if they didn't want Israel destroyed?

Summary: If not for their greed and embezzling, Hamas could have, single-handedly, provided every. Single. Gazan with bomb shelters, healthy food, clean water, and electricity (via batteries) for over two years. Details and sources below the cut.

Shelter

First, let's figure out the cost of a bomb shelter. Fortunately, we can get this information relatively easily, thanks to the Cold War. Admittedly, this is a nuclear bunker, but hey; if Israel takes the nuclear option, Gaza will be fine. I mean, not really, but you know, better to go overkill than underkill.

According to the Department of Defense (1962) a Belowground Corrugated Steel Culvert Shelter cost $150 in 1962. The BLS (2025) says that's worth $1589 or so as of January 2025. Technically the shelter fits three adults (or two adults and two children), but only for a few weeks, so I'm going to pretend like it has room for only one person and a lot of food and water.

OK. What's the installation cost? They say two days excavation and four days building, plus what I'm going to say is one day of transport.

The US Department of State (2023) says the average daily wage in Gaza was $15. We'll be nice and pay our workers $30, giving us a cost of $210 for the installation. So that's a total of almost exactly $1800 per person.

As an upper estimate on Gaza's population, I'll use the UNRWA, which claims 2.4 million residents (UNRWA, August 2023). Multiplying it out, we find that the cost to provide shelter to everyone in Gaza is $4.32 billion dollars.

Food

The World Food Program USA claims the average cost of a meal they provide is 50 cents (WFP USA, 2024). At three meals a day, this means the cost per day to feed 2.4 million people is $3.6 million, which works out to $2.635 billion to feed everyone in Gaza for two years.

This means our total cost for two years is $6.667 billion dollars.

Excellent!

Water

FEMA recommends having a gallon of water per person per day (FEMA; archived link used because FEMA is 'being updated to comply with President Trump's executive orders'. I have done similarly for all non-interactive government websites).

OK. What about water sources for Gaza? It is a desert, after all; you can't just expect water to magically appear.

The most likely water source would be desalinated water. One UNICEF project was $12 million in 2013, or $16.63 million in 2025 (BLS). It produced 6000 cubic meters per day. As one cubic meter is 1000 liters, that's 6 million liters a day of water. According to the WHO, 20 liters per person per day is the minimum recommended amount; this works out to 48 million liters per person per day. Meeting that demand would require only 8 plants. To store up a reasonable amount and include maintenance, I'll quadruple that number, for a total of $532.16 million in construction and maintenance costs. (No, I have no idea what it costs to maintain a desalinization plant in Gaza.)

Assuming we can save 48 million liters/day, it would take only, well, two years to save up two years' worth of water. So, our total for shelter, food and water is $7.19916 billion for two years' worth.

Electricity

Currently, Gaza imports natural gas. But hey, we're dreaming, and Gaza seems perfectly suited for solar power.

One source (who, if I'm recalling correctly, is now HR for Hamas) told NBC Gaza needed 500-600 megawatts a day (Abdelkader). I'm going to say 720 a day, or 30 megawatts an hour.

For my estimate of home electricity generation, I used a building I'm pretty sure was the Chabad of Ashkelon.

I tried to make the outline small, because this is a lower estimate. Regardless, I got a figure of 18.8 kilowatts/day. Since there are 1000 kilowatts in a megawatt, that's 720,000/18.8=38,297 buildings. Let's say 40,000 are needed to meet demand and 80,000 to double it.

According to the UN, if you do the math, 116,000 buildings are still standing in Gaza, so we should be good there.

Now, I am not an expert at batteries and electricity, but I'd assume there's some way to convert the energy of solar generators to the kinds of batteries you can put in storage and forget about.

So what would the installation cost of that be? NPR says $30,000 per house (Simon), which works out to $2.4 billion; surprisingly cheap! I'll add another half that to account for batteries, so $3.6 billion for electricity. Set it up in 2021 and everyone has two years' worth saved up.

So we have a total of a little over $10.7 billion for at least two years' worth of food, water, shelter, and electricity for everyone in Gaza. I'm going to round up and say $11 billion.

$11 billion is not a small amount.

But, unfortunately, neither is the amount Hamas has stolen:

$700 million stolen from aid according to Fatah, a Palestinian organization (Winer)

$100 million/year military budget (Issacharoff) in 2016. This works out to $900 billion since then.

I could add other ones of varying reliability, but I don't need to.

But the really big one? Their leaders. According to the Times of India, they were worth $11 billion.

That adds up to $12.6 billion dollars, more than enough to cover it.

And much of this would be, effectively, one-time costs! Of the $11 billion we estimated it would take, shelter's $4.32 billion is basically one-time only and the $2.4 billion solar cost is, too.

In other news...

Remember this tiny business charade, back in January 2024?

At the time of its sudden appearance on the fandom's radars, it was discussed to death. Two things mainly intrigued: the company's unusual name and the fact it was registered in England, not Scotland. For further details, kindly see this post, especially if you are new and have no idea this ever happened: https://sgiandubh.tumblr.com/post/740086132385218560/so-sam-is-no-longer-scottish-he-now-appears-as - posted on January 21st 2024, which is to say an eternity ago.

At the time, my own speculation was that he might have blocked a slot for further business projects, since changing the company's name is usually very easy. Same goes for the address, provided it would also be in England, only.

In the light of not so recent, but totally ignored events, it would seem things were a bit different, though:

Quietly dissolved by Companies House UK on 17 December 2024, after its address was automatically changed to the UK's Companies House default, somewhere in Wales.

What happened?

In a nutshell, the accounting office provided at registration as the new company's address more than probably disputed it, for false or fraudulent use. I immediately remind you and all the other 'experts' out there (ahem...), that Companies House never checks the provided address at the moment of the company's registration. Given the activity rhythm, that would be materially impossible, not to mention the operative/maintenance costs. Thus, UK legislation simply provides for sanctions, hoping it would be enough to discourage or warn cheap thrills amateurs about the consequences of any fraudulent use.

Companies House then changed the registered address to their own default one, on 1 August 2024, allowing 28 days for the company to make the necessary corrections.

This did not happen and so, the UK Companies House went all the way and gave a first notice for compulsory strike-off, on 24 September 2024...

... followed by the final strike off notice, on 17 December 2024, since the company clearly failed to do so:

This happened for a very clear reason, that nobody - including myself - was able to identify or substantiate at the time the news of its apparition hit our screens. Reason being this was likely a hoax, by bored fans who went all the way to registering a company, just for shits and giggles.

How was this even possible?

Easy: under the current UK legal provisions, literally anyone with a keyboard can register a company on behalf of literally anyone else. Provided they know some simple, basic facts about the person involved:

For example:

Town of birth: Balmaclellan, Scotland

Mother's maiden name: Leat

Father's first name: David

All these informations are readily available to a keen (obsessed?) reader of S's Waypoints memoir. Which does mention his maternal uncle, a widely appreciated wicker sculptor (and author of the Fire Cross episode bonfire in the series, by the way):

Circling back to the unpronounceable company, it goes to show how far some unknown idiots are ready to go, in their quest for an ultimately delusional relevance, for I also remind you where we are: on the fringes of a dwindling fandom, akin to a supernova, which is to say a dying star. Yes, as far as spending £50 (which is, by the way, a ridiculous amount) to register a fake company on S's behalf. I also happen to doubt S knows about all this, but if he doesn't - well: he should, because this can also be construed as whoever dunnit's intention to harm his and his businesses reputation.

I have an idea, but I choose to remain silent, because it is simply a hunch I am perfectly unable to substantiate.

we did not have to resort to Fried Green Tomatoes At The Whistle Stop Cafe bc while i was pants shopping at the local Out Of The Closet gay thrift store, i picked up a couple more gay and/or lesbian romance and/or erotica books. i meant to read one by author Kim Baldwin this week and switched to one of her other books bc this premise is WILD. one of the most fun debut novels ive ever read. a really effective thriller!

When the hunter becomes the hunted...do you trust your instincts or your heart? A killer for hire, Katarzyna Demetrious has grown weary of her violent and solitary life. Contemplating retirement, she has gone into hiding in her remote bunker home as a blizzard rages outside. Can she outwit the assassins on her trail? And could the woman she rescues...and is unexpectedly attracted to...be the deadliest of them all?

this is a 315p softcover published in 2005 by our friends at Bold Strokes Books, and the author thanks previous tuesdaypost author Radclyffe for her help on this, her first novel. she has an incredibly charming website with a visitor counter at the bottom.

one major caveat i have with this book is that the amnesiac lead goes by Jake for most of the book due to a silly joke. i wish they didn't. i wish romance authors were better at picking names. i am going to email the author when i am not resisting a migraine thanking her so much for such a fun debut novel and also hey hi how did you name this character?

i think my problem with so many of the books i have read for this project is that there isn't enough going on. i think i need an additional genre other than pure contemporary romance to be confident that it can fill a whole book with interesting words. SO many things happen in Hunter's Pursuit. we cover a lot of ground. this would be a very respectable b-movie action/thriller/intrigue. i wish i was in charge of gay movie rights.

so many romances are so so bad at getting you to care about the characters and why they would want to be together. not so here! they’re very smart very competent people but this book is very interested in: what are the extreme circumstances that make someone fuck up and forgo their usual precautions? there’s some real home alone shit!!!

my quibbles with this mostly not structural or wondering if the author knows what words mean, but more minor things i wish the book did even though it more than delivered on its premise. eg Kat is a surprisingly caring and gentle and protective person for being a trained assassin, and i would have loved to see that played up a little bit more or seen that veer off into possessiveness a little bit more. the beginning of the book had me SO excited, bc Kat has to undress Jake and patch up her extensive wounds and gets super turned on and thinks uh-oh! and then Jake finds out she had to be undressed while unconscious and gets super turned on about being so completely vulnerable and thinks uh-oh! GOOD SHIT!!! WISH THERE WAS MORE OF THAT!!!! THE REST OF IT WAS SURPRISINGLY VANILLA!!!

they don't fuck until the last three pages of the book (they are both Very Injured, makes sense, they do a lot of kissing and pining instead) they’re both extremely weird about fairly tame early relationship steps which at least makes sense here bc they’re assassins. they’re not normal. i would have liked for Kat to be a more unapologetic baddie or more morally gray, bc when we find out about her freelance jobs they are more about serving justice than getting paid. nothing particularly outstanding about the sex scene but it did not make me want to curl up into a ball and roll away.

this was just Fun. it has a really fun structural thing surrounding the twist i wish i could talk about without spoiling the whole thing. it is not a perfect slam dunk and i would have loved to see a darker draft, but it is very good at getting me to care about both halves of the couple and at maintaining tension. does what it says on the tin which is more than i can say for most of the other books in this project

Hombre (1967, dir. Ritt) a response to Stagecoach (1939, dir. Ford) that i liked much more than Stagecoach. i was trying to find something to watch on letterboxd, decided on this one, figured out it was on poob, and when i fired up poob it was the first recommended movie lmao. how could poob have possibly deduced that from my viewing pattern of only watching one western on their niche platform every quarter

John Russell (Paul Newman) finds that the world is not so welcoming when he returns to his Arizona home town to collect his inheritance. A white man raised by American Indians, Russell is subjected to numerous instances of racism when people discover his background. When the stagecoach Russell is riding in is held up by a gang run by one of the scheming passengers, Cicero Grimes (Richard Boone), it falls to Russell to defend the passengers -- the very people who have dismissed and insulted him.

this is based on an Elmore Leonard novel and was, tbqh, a fucking downer of a movie, more so than most revisionist westerns. this movie has a lot of things to say about race, humanity, and justice and doesn't get in its own way about it. i liked the flip from "white man saving white woman from indians" to "white man raised as indian saving a white woman from white men". i am woefully behind in watching all known american westerns and this makes me really excited to watch more of director ritt's work, bc this was so beautifully shot. even the night scenes looked good!

do NOT worry they ditch that fuckass wig early on. VERY sharp, noir-ish dialogue. infinitely quotable. i think Newman is my favorite of the taciturn leading men trend in westerns that Eastwood popularized, partly bc i think Newman deepens a character in a lot of subtle ways in scenes without a lot of dialogue, instead of just Performing Cowboy Actions. i also really loved the leading lady, Diane Cilento, who more than holds her own in scenes with Newman.

i have added it to the "westerns i would let other people watch" list with some caveats: attempted sexual assault, pretty good discussion of race that may not always perfectly match 2025 sensibilities, and i don't think this should be someone's first or fifth western. unfortunately i think you gotta wade through a bunch of racist dreck first in order to understand why this was such a marked contrast to other westerns of the time. oh i didn't know that's what the preview would be. hi sabata.

baby blanket progress: sorry i was in the middle of a row. just about done with the tenth repeat, on track to finish this by the child's second birthday. i have extended it a bit to twelve repeats instead of ten, i may be playing a bit of yarn chicken but she's unfortunately a little bit bigger than a newborn these days and needs an appropriately blanket cape.

also: pants. a faster way to feel bad about your body than pants shopping has not yet been devised. however i hunted and gathered three pairs of office-appropriate pants, did a lot of thread trimming and de-pilling and opening up pockets and reinforcing lower hems and buttonholes and buttons etc. Nice (TM) pants in plus sizes do not really exist in the local thrift ecosystem so i am holding my nose. all of these are really awful poly/ramie/rayon blends, but thrifting enough work-appropriate dresses would send a more conservative message than i want to at whatever fucking job i end up at, and i refuse to shave my legs every day, so awful plasticky pants it is. i wish popular plus-size retailer torrid knew how to clip a fucking thread. i also wish aforementioned torrid knew how to find a normal print instead of the loudest most fucked up prints available. the green plaid is basically thick leggings/ponte pants but they're loud enough that it probably won't be too noticeable.

i went to five different rich bitch consignment shops and thrifts downtown before giving up and going to the local Out Of The Closet thrift, where i almost immediately found two pairs of pants and a dress. i put back two more pairs bc tailoring them myself would have been extremely annoying. they are pricier than most thrifts in the area (these pants were $10 each) but it's still cheaper than department store or torrid clearance prices and now i don't have to think about pants for a little bit.

this brings me up to four real pairs of pants plus one pair of jeans, so even if i shit myself every day for a week i should be all right.

Today on another installment of: People Who Don’t Know About Wikipedia Kvetching About Wikipedia

1) This is not true. Plain and simple, there is a lot of information about post-war Vietnam and other SE Asian countries (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand). Let’s clear that up straight away.

1a) the after effects of the Vietnam War are not the same thing as the Vietnam War. That’s why most of the Vietnam War article is about, get this, the actual Vietnam War.

1b) The black servicemen section is two (2) paragraphs long; I find it interesting that this is what’s listed as a sticking point.

1c) To stay on that topic as a pertinent example, the black servicemen section also includes a link to the main article at which further information can be found as does pretty much every single other section. The information is presented in a concise form and then there are more specific articles are pertinent subtopics. This is how encyclopedias work, particularly online ones.

2) Brass tacks answer: Wikipedia has guidelines on article size because when an article becomes enormous and clogged with details it becomes more likely to become a burden than an asset. This includes a greater likelihood of crashing browsers, not actually be read since readers’ attention spans are (on average) pretty short, and maintenance becomes a nightmare. There are also technical issues include size limits by the MediaWiki software that we/the editors (the most wretched biased people you’ll ever meet) use.

3) a note on the wretched deplorables of “English Wikipedia” — you realize you don’t have to be white/Western/from the U.S. to edit English Wikipedia right? It’s the 5th most visited website in the world as of January 2025. That being said, I’m very interested if what op thinks about non-English Wikipedias. Like what, they’re all perfect utopias where no one promotes a specific viewpoint or government propaganda and everyone is both a noble savage AND the exact same type of communist you are?

After server launch on April 28, all abilities will support customization for ability items when the quest [Sea of Stars Revelation: The Secret of Ability Outfits] is completed. Once a full Ability Outfit is collected and its ability unlocked, go to [Wardrobe: Ability Setup] to freely mix and match the ability's visual appearance.

■ [Glow Up] System Upgrade

To enhance the Glow Up feature, the development team has updated the Glow Up System.

● New Color Rewards: There'll be new color variants for glowed up 5-star outfits/separate pieces and 4-star outfits/separate pieces. While glowing up won't unlock new colors for 3-star outfits/separate pieces, it unlocks new Palettes for them. More unique dyeable colors can be accessed for 3-star outfits/separate pieces in the dyeing feature by consuming dyeing materials.

● New color variants for select glowed up 5-star/4-star outfits and Palettes for glowed up 3-star outfits are available during Version 1.5. More outfits and pieces will gain Glow Up rewards in future versions.

● The [Froggy Fashion] Outfit

The outfit has been upgraded to the new [Croaker Chorus: Whimsicality] ability, allowing Nikki to summon four Croakers for a performance.

The upgraded ability and rerun Resonance event [Croaker's Whisper] will be available during the 4-star Resonance period of Version 1.5.

Previous Resonance progress will carry over into the rerun, allowing those who have collected the full outfit to unlock the ability straight away.

● The [Crystal Poems] Outfit

The possibility of a 3rd Obey Me app

Will there ever be a 3rd Obey Me app?

IMO, Solmare could give it a try, but it will become near-impossible to reach the peak like it used to have.

So far, I have seen no cases where an game-based IP becomes successful again after a reboot/rehash of their apps; those apps did not survive for more than 2-3 years.

Examples include:

-the infamous case of Love Live SIF 2 (where the game didn't survive for a year in JP server and 3 months in global server),

-Senjuushi: Rhodoknight (1st game lived for about 1½ years, 2nd game lived for about 2⅓ years)

-From ARGONAVIS (the games are part of their multimedia project. Their 1st game, AAside, only lived for a little more than a year. Their 2nd game, Kimisute, lived for around 9 months. As the game - which is the core of character contents - no longer operates, it was decided that the company will place all other multimedia projects into indefinite hiatus by the end of 2025. There are other factors that lead to the franchise's downfall but that is for another story)

-Otome Yuusha (lived for around 10 months before going into closed maintenance mode for 7 months to renew the game, lived for another 8 months before it got the axe, and shifted their future content to short stories in one of the websites operated under their publisher, Level 5. The short stories were being serialised for about 1 year and 8 months)

There are quite a few more examples not mentioned here, but the gist of it is that -

a new app is unable to garner the same level of success the franchise used to have. Even if Solmare releases a 3rd app, it could only likely attract existing players more than welcoming new ones, which does not help in their revenue for their gaming department.

Another thing to take note of is that, both existing OM apps need their servers to be kept up even without updates. Both apps were outsourced to be developed by another gaming developer company, and maintaining these servers need money. With the sharp decrease in revenue in the upcoming months, who knows how long the servers can be kept up...

For reference, older Solmare otome games like Wizardess Heart, Blood in Roses, Ninja Shadow were developed in-house by Solmare, and their servers are still active and running even after 4+ years from the cease of updates for these games. (I still play Ninja Shadow from time to time and is looking out for revivals of past events I didn't get to participate.)

For another reference, Solmare's gal game 'Moe! Ninja Girls RPG' are likely developed by the same outsourced gaming developer team and it was released back in April 2020. Updates were ceased in April 2021, and the servers were shut down a year later in April 2022.

I believe if there are enough people who keep the game and fandom active, the Obey Me servers won't be shutting down anytime soon, so don't worry too much about it :)

TL;DR having a 3rd app may be unlikely due to possible low revenue and many failed examples of other IPs out there, but the existing OM servers are likely to be up for a long time.

NEW YORK (AP) — Segway is recalling about 220,000 of its scooters sold across the U.S. due to a fall hazard that has resulted in user injuries ranging from bruises to broken bones.

According to a notice published by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the folding mechanism in Segway’s Ninebot Max G30P and Max G30LP KickScooters can fail during use — causing the handlebars or stem of the scooters to fold.

That can result in serious injuries, the Commission warns. Thursday’s recall notice notes that Segway has received 68 reports of folding mechanism failures — with 20 injuries that include abrasions, bruises, lacerations and broken bones.

Consumers in possession of these now-recalled scooters are urged to stop using them immediately and contact Segway to request a free maintenance kit. This kit includes tools and step-by-step instructions to inspect and adjust the scooters' locking mechanism as needed, Segway says.

“Over time, depending on riding conditions, the folding mechanism may require periodic checks and tightening,” California-based Segway writes on its website. “No returns or replacements are involved.”

According to the CPSC, the Segway scooters involved in this recall were manufactured in China and Malaysia and sold at retailers across the U.S. — like Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Target and Sam’s Club, as well as online at Segway.com and Amazon.com, between January 2020 and February 2025. Sale prices ranged from $600 to $1,000.

Hello! I am looking for someone to rent my apartment this fall as I am trying to move for a job opportunity. This would be a relet, not a sublease, so it would be your own lease.

The complex is fantastic, with a friendly property manager, responsive maintenance, routine pest control services, and a great location right off of Aquarena Dr. (Stadium View Apartments) I have not had any outstanding issues with this unit or complex, and it has been an overall positive living experience!

FYI: Cloudflare (a major hosting business) is having issues during their scheduled maintenance, which is impacting a lot of things. I discovered it after trying to figure out why Discord wasn't loading some images, and why I couldn't upload images. I also can't log into my credit union's website, just got an error screen. A bit of searching, and I found a reddit where someone pointed out that Cloudflare's problems were the cause. Also gave this handy link, with updating info from Cloudflare.

The Trump administration on Friday appeared to take down data and information from a variety of government websites, with a focus on information related to gender diversity, sexual health and climate change. In some cases entire websites disappeared. Others remained online, but had critical information missing. The changes to government websites, as well as the blockages in the flow of grant money the administration announced earlier this week, appeared part of a whole-of-government effort to erase mention of topics deemed incompatible with President Donald Trump’s executive orders seeking to marginalize transgender people and pushing back against material purportedly associated with “DEIA,” or diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility, initiatives. Among the many affected websites Friday: The U.S. Census Bureau’s homepage, which appeared to be experiencing intermittent outages. Compared to archived versions, the National Institutes of Health Office on Research and Women’s Health appeared significantly pared down, as was the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Preventions’ Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, which returned an error when accessed Friday evening. NPR noted the program is “the nation’s largest monitoring program on health-related behaviors among high schoolers.”

The Bureau of Prisons website now displays only male and female populations. It used to include data on the number of trans people in custody, according to an archived version. Numerous webpages for the CDC’s HIV prevention division, especially those about efforts to address health disparities among Black, Latino and transgender communities, were not online. By Friday, the main webpage for HIV, HIV data, details about “Ending the HIV Epidemic,” and information on PrEP, the preventive drug used to reduce the risk, were also not available. Other CDC sites about LGBTQ youth, including pages focused on risks of suicide among LGBTQ children, school safety, and health disparities were all still inaccessible as of Friday night. Similarly, Target HIV, a website that provides technical assistance and training resources to agencies and medical facilities that receive federal funding from the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program — which is run by HHS to provide treatment to low-income people living with HIV — was “under maintenance.” The deletions are part of a wider ideological purge undertaken by the Trump administration and fulfill some of the policy promises outlined in Project 2025. Over the last week Trump signed several executive orders barring federally funded hospitals and clinics from providing gender health care to trans people younger than 19; requiring the promotion of “patriotic education” while limiting any teaching of any material that includes “gender ideology,” broadly defined; and redefining “sex” to exclude transgender people from legal recognition. Already, Trump’s directives have halted coverage of gender-affirming for youth on federal insurance plans.

[...] Outside contractors working with one agency were told to terminate any government contracts that “promote or inculcate gender ideology” and included a list of words including “gender, transgender, inclusivity, nonbinary” and “they/them” pronouns, according to a separate email obtained by HuffPost. [...] The crackdown also extended to government-funded research: Science reported Thursday that the National Science Foundation had frozen previously-promised funding to an unknown number of its thousands of grant recipients, searching for research work deemed in violation of Trump’s new rules against “woke gender ideology,” diversity efforts and similar edicts.

Numerous websites have gone dark and/or removed key information on health and equity due to the Project 2025-inspired censoring of gender diversity, sexual health, and climate change-related content by the Trump Regime.
