Week 4 Summary
With the end of the Christmas break, we are back continuing our project. We started off the week with a trip to the Norwich Museum. We were tasked to go discover and record points of interest that we might encounter. In terms of objective, we were to study our subjects through the repetition of drawings, from numerous angles. Composition could be used to heighten the relationship between the figures on a page, so deliberate placement should be considered. I found myself in the wildlife section, studying various birds and mammals. I analysed their form and shape, asking myself what shape language do they present, what core shapes does their form convey. I feel this was a good task; I collected some good observational drawings and through the placement of my figures, created the sense of character between my subjects. This task helped to develop my sketchbook. I am interested in studying rabbits further, they caught my attraction. I believe they could fulfil interesting and diverse characters in due course.
This week we also developed our After Effects morphs. Having found the software quite difficult to come to grips with, I watched many tutorials over the break to attempt to enhance my understanding and fluidity in After Effects and I can now implement morph and create paths. I watched a few movies over the break to see if there was a film that I was more attracted to and one that I discovered was Bird Box. Considering the film stems from the horror genre, the concept was quite unique: to survive, you couldn’t look, you had to keep your eyes closed (unless you were blind). I thought this was an interesting concept, that I could potentially translate in my Morphing project.
Overall I am pleased with the finished product I have. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to implement everything into my morph, however considering the journey I have overcome, I feel I have a good piece.

10/02/2019
This week I’ve almost finished my Character performance video. I had a problem that some of the movements looked robotic in the animation, so Kris showed me why it looked like that and told me how to improve the performance. Hopefully, I’ll have enough time to make it next week.
I’ve also done all three bestiary performances stepped so the only thing that I need to do is smooth them out. Adam has helped me to do the texture on it. I think it looks very nice, almost the way I wanted it to look like, I just need to play around with the colour but I feel like that I don't have enough time for that.
On Friday I had a personal tutorial with L.White. I chose to do a script about the convicted prisoner but it will be from the mother point of view. The teacher showed me some examples of work that I could reference in my essay and how I could improve my idea for the script. I wrote the script and the essay on the weekend before submissions I’ll just have to read them through again and check if they have any writing errors. Maybe I'll even add something to them. In actuality I even wanted to expand on my script but If I did that it would have had way more than 1000 words so I shortened it to the main ideas.

Year 2 Weekly Summaries - Week 15
Tumblr media
Day 1 - Retopology,uv and substance painter
In today’s session I was able to finalise the uvs created over the weekend around the arms of the character. I ensured that each of the edge flows looped around the subject and this would allow a good bake in future stages. By doing this the edge flows supported the topology of the character for example around the collar I had to create a lip to show the change in shapes from the collar bone. After the retopology was finalised I moved onto uvs. This was relatively straight forward as I selected a camera based view and simply selected the loops around the waist, shoulders, forearms and wrists. As well as selecting the ankle. This gave the base to move forward onto unfolding the uvs. For this I had to cut along the edge of the loop previously cut and move the subject in the uv editor and then press unfold. I the. Pack each of the unfolded uvs into the corner and exported to substance painter.
Substance painter was a relatively new process for me as I had never used the software before. I found the software quite intuitive and really easy to use. By simply dragging the material onto the elected uv I was able to give my character texture therefore lifting his overall look. This also helped to distinguish what each part of the character was made of for example the material of the clothes compared to the braces and belt. I chose a white denim for the shirt and a darker denim for the trousers sticking too the 2d concept of the character. For the texture of the belt and braces I chose a leather and coloured the belt brown and the braces black. The most interesting part of the design comes within the head as I chose to use a Caron fibre material. This will create a distinct look as the lights are placed on the character for the walk cycle and turnaround.
Day 1 - Group feedback session with Lyndsey
In todays group feedback session I was able to identify how to make my screen play cyclical. For this I pitched the idea of having the character play with a gun at his desk at the start of the screenplay and then have the new accountant pull the same gun out at the end. Lyndsey didn’t think this idea would fit the characters persona at the start and so suggested another route. I chose to forward two ideas the first one was that the character would be handed the gun by his boss and he doesn’t want to use it and so locks it in the desk. The second was too have the character playing with cards at the start. This would therefore establish the characters motive for going to the card game later that evening. I think I will try to incorporate both of the ideas into the screenplay as it will greatly benefit the story telling. However, I feel like I am getting severely close to the word count and so need to condense the screenplay entirely.
Day 2- Rigging the character
In todays open session I was able to begin rigging the character for my project. I used the knowledge learned from previous sessions to help establish a base in which to start the rig.  However I quickly realised because of time constraints towards the end of this project I need to move quicker in order to get to animating the characters walk cycle, turnaround and third actions. For this I chose to auto rig the character. This does have its draw backs as a severe amount of weight painting is needed to full establish the characters movement when a controller is used. In addition,  I had to rig a completely new hand for the character as the auto rig did not achieve this. I then parented this up to the rig itself. Tomorrow , I will continue to weight paint and start blocking out the walk cycle for the character .
Day 3 - Character performance workshop with Sarah Perry
In todays character performance session. We recorded reference video for the performance to establish key beats and posing for the characters. I found that this was instrumental in developing my idea. I had previously recorded a scenario of a news reporter and a member of the public. The member of the public would mimic the reporter and exaggerate the movements of the reporter before the reporter notices him. By having a bigger performance area it was better to establish framing for the characters as I wanted a character in the foreground and a character in the background to the left. The character in the foreground would take up the most of the frame to show that he is the focal point.I am looking forward to develop the performance of the character and begin the animation process.
Day 3 - open media lab session
Today I was able to finalise the rigging process. I finished the weight painting of the character. This was a painstaking process due to me not understanding the fundamentals of the mechanic at first. I had to paint weight back on ti each of the joints after testing the rig by moving limbs to areas I could use in the walk cycle. This process also helped how to establish any flaws in the topology as more edge loops were needed around specific joints like the knee and elbow. This is because pinching appeared around the back of the knee and the topology was going inside of itself. Furthermore, around the shoulder the weight under the strap had to be adjusted as it was being pulled by the chest. This caused it to cave in . I am looking forward to completing the walk cycle of my character as I feel I have rigged well.
Day 4 - The reflective essay
In the essay discuss how you would animate the script
Demonstrate a range of research
Explore relevant books, films, images, digital resources and critical texts
In your essay:identify the potential challenges of filming your script and how you would overcome them. Discuss how and why you revised and redrafted your creative work.
On your blog show your creative development from start to finish, e.g writing exercises, character profiling, beat sheet, outline etc.
In your essay reflect on the potential challenges of filming your script.
Demonstrate an understanding of screenplay style simple, clear, visual.
Follow the basic rules of screenplay format
Tone and style: your reflective essay
You should write in an appropriate academic tone- citations and bibliographies required
However this is a reflective essay, can use first person and write about your own experiences as relevant to your creative process.
The reflective essay: 1000 words
Don’t explain Jekyll and Hyde
Don’t explain the task
Explain how your screenplay was inspired by the set text - themes ,transformation, names and characters, genre and particular lines incidents , images from the book.
Discuss your writing process- reflect on your journey from the first idea to the finished script- introduce evidence of wider research.-
Influences :
Peaky blinders
America in the 1920s
The godfather
Al Capone and the mafia
The valentines day massacre
Tarantino
Sam Mendes
The wolf of wall street - Jordan Belfort
The construction in New York in the 1920s

3. Discuss how you would film your screenplay. Eg:
Animation type - cg
Aesthetic style - Pixar/Dream-works inspired
Choice of materials
Colour pallet - dark, dimly lit , black and white
Soundtrack - typical to the time (1920s swing and jazz music, rat pac)
Lighting - dimly lit
Intended audience- adults and teenagers
Would the script be easy or difficult to film ?
What challenges could you face?
How could your over come them?
The five stages of Tragedy
Christopher booker the seven basic plots (2004)  defines the 5 stages of tragedy- sources at end of presentation. Tragedy tends to begin with a temptation
Anticipation stage
Dream stage
Frustration stage
Nightmare stage
Destruction stage

Quick week summary - 22-28/08/2022
Hi there! It’s been crazily fast week. I’ve been working out, working a lot and eating a lot of unhealthy stuff - which I hope I will manage to change this upcoming week. But at least I’m healthy, alive and stick to my deadlines.
Workout summary:
Tumblr media
I don’t really know about my calories intake this week I haven’t been tracking it like I usually do. But I bet some days were well and some days I didn’t really eat enough. This is something to work on this week.

Week 3 Summary 15.10.17
This week we put together everything we have learned about motion so far to create a walk cycle. At first it was difficult to draw using extremes as we had to work out the spacing between the frames. We learned how to use key frame animation, first plotting extremes (the contact points), before adding the inbetweens to create a progressively smoother animation. We were working on odd numbers as we would animate in Dragon Frame on twos. After an induction on dragon frame I now understand the software better and am getting used to working faster and more efficiently. I had some problems with keeping proportions the same, and fixed this issue with some tests and iterations, measuring and marking out arcs for the arms to swing by. The arms, being a secondary action, were added on after the initial plotting of the legs. We added secondary actions similarly to when animating the ball bounce, for me this included adding hair (with several attempts) and a bag, both of which were tested multiple times before it appeared believable. For this I used frame my frame animation, as it was easier to keep the mass of the hair and bag the same and helped the hair to appear natural.  This week with character research we looked further into archetypes and how characters may have more than one. I also researched further into my own choice of animated character for the essay, and the idea of ‘Queer-coding’ in animation. The character I have chose at this point is Alex the Lion, and have decided he mostly has the qualities of a hero, yet in some ways is a shapeshifter due to his switches in instincts. The way he is presented would be an interesting topic to discuss, how anthropomorphic he is and in what ways he shows this. I began to plan out my essay by watching the film and looking through the book, “The Animator’s Survival Guide’ by Richard Williams. I picked out certain quotes that makes him a shapeshifter and made notes discussing this. In life drawing this week we were encouraged to look more into form and tone, and how tone can create a sense of life without the line drawing. Our last task was a 12 minute study of the model using just white chalk on mid tone paper, this forced us to look at how the side lighting alone creates form. Overall I am pleased with how what I have learned so far has come together to improve the dynamics of my animations. I have also gained confidence in researching to improve my own work.

Weekly Summary 30/9
Dynamics
I feel like this week has been, slowly but surely, very productive. We began using coins for stop motion animation and by the end of the week were producing our firsts 2D drawn animations which I can assure you leaves a nicer taste in your mouth when you see it taking shape, at least it does to me.
It was really interesting starting to focus on things like how does the weight affect the movement of an object and beginning to know real animation “technical terms” as extremes, inbetweens, passing position/breakdown or arc of action, terms I'm sure I´ll be using daily from now on.
Character Research
This week we were introduced to our first research project that will teach us how technological, historical, creative, and cultural paradigms influence character development.
As I mention in my post dedicated to this week’s lecture, I had never thought about the fact that there’s no story without any characters and that characters are always defined by its stories as well as stories consist of nothing other than the action of its characters. Realising this woke me up and got me interested until the end.
Although having to write an essay may not sound like much fun, after the first session of this project I can anticipate how interesting these sessions, working on and writing the essay are going to be.

Weekly Summary - Four
This week our group for the visual essay were each given a slide to complete for a small presentation. I chose simplicity and found some really interesting information. We had a good lecture and experimentation with colours in art which I found fascinating and would love to explore a little more in my own work. I am enjoying doing the research for my essay proposal and have found a wealth of information on the subject, possibly too much, as it is a really far reaching and complicated subject. For my proposal I really need to slim it down and work out exactly what it is I need to explore and come up with a concise question so I can make my research more streamlined and useful.

Week 16 Summary: 29th April - 3rd May 2019
For the Fantastical Creature project, this week I drew out my character in photoshop for the cast line up sheet in a crouching pose.  I made my first version of it and worked with my group to put the character together but then I realised that the torso was leaning slightly to the right and I didn't like how it looked so I went back and changed the position of the torso and submitted it again with my group.  I also began adding the fur this week to my 3D modelled creature in Maya.  At first I wasn’t sure how it worked as I have never done it before so I played around with the brushes and tools to try and create the kind of fur that I wanted.  However, after a while, I wasn’t happy with how it was looking so I asked Adam for some help and he suggested to use modifiers before using brushes  This helped massively and I got my model to a point that I was happy with.  Next week I plan to show Jon and get some feedback on it before making the final turnaround and composited images.
For my lip sync project, I continued my progress on the final line work of the animation and got to the end of the clip.  Once I had it all done, I showed Katherine the video with the improved mouth brush and line work and she said to finish it off I just needed to add a couple of blinks.  After adding some blinks, I then coloured it in to make it look nicer and more complete.
Over the holidays, I researched successful and unsuccessful showreels and wrote about what makes them good or bad.  Some of the bad things included title cards and clips lasting too long and distracting music and titles.  This helped me understand how to make a successful showreel and what not to do when making mine next week.

Weekly Summary 31/3/19
Visual Essay
This week, I made an animatic for my section. In order to do this, I was trying to find information about the sort of the dog that was used as a reference for Haku and how he interpreted whatever was being fed to him, but found no information on it. I had to use the information I could deduce from the scene itself, from this I concluded that the dog referenced was probably quite large and he was probably fed medicine or at least something that required force feeding. So what I ended up doing with my animatic was to make it seem like trying to force feed the dog was a very repetitive process, which it probably wasn’t since a vet was doing.
In any case, to simplify the assets used in the animation, I decided to have a hand chase the pill, and once it finally catches it and holds it as a prize a rectangle emerges behind the hand, as it’s position changes. This was a simple was to convey the door to the vet’s office and then it morphing into a dog. I do feel like I may need make adjustments to how the hand reveals the door as this later on makes an uncomfortable proximity between the hand and the dog’s head.
When creating the animatic, I did try to keep the shapes consistent, but my lack of confidence at this stage does make me rush these things. other than that,  I managed to plan potential motion in the animation by watching a number of video references for the motion I intend to convey.
Personal Branding
This week, I was particularly interested in the sort of meanings that come with variations in typography. I do find this topic a bit daunting because I struggle to find where I should start from as I haven’t learned anything about typography before. Although, whatever basics I learn will give me a better idea on how to present my website.
I also completed my personal icon for the ABOUT page. I am a bit concerned that it differs in colour scheme from pretty much anything else I’ll have on my website. Once I put my website together, I may have to change colours for some of my work.
Research Report
I had my tutorial with Lindsey this week, which gave me a bit more direction on where to go with my research and potential people to email. Up till then, I haven’t been doing a lot of research because I just didn’t know where to start from and what it is I wanted to achieve. I was researching anything I could find about freelance work, hoping it would give me some more directions. To further my research, I want to define really what classes as experimental animation, to see how much it applies in the corporate and the film industries.

Weekly Summary
25/02/19 - 01/03/19
This week we had our ani wip conference! It was a really fun experience as always, listening to animators talk about their experiences was really cool and super helpful. For us third years, who are about to leave, it really helped to listen to the advice they had to give about our future and life after graduation. It was insightful to hear of some experiences and how long it took some of the artists to find work after graduation. It helped calm my nerves about finding work after uni, and where I should take myself after graduation. I got some good showreel advice too from Blue Zoo, it was really interesting to hear a studios side on viewing showreels, what they look out for, what they don’t really care for etc.
I especially liked the talk by Astrid from Mock Duck Studios, she gave really good tips on being an independent filmmaker in Stop Motion, and some advice on how to go about stop motion and set design with a budget. Since I would really like to go into stop motion, it was comforting to hear about her experiences and factors for us to think about in the long run when creating a stop motion when you’re no longer in university.
This week I also started/finished off the city background for the Error collab. It didn’t take too long to sort out, but now its trying to figure out how to animate it when doing the parallax. So far I’ve animated the city all on one layer, so all the buildings move together, but I’m not too sure on how that looks altogether. I feel like the foreground should move a little bit faster than the background, to get the right sense of movement as the drone wouldn’t be moving. I’ve made the clouds move on a different layer too, and you can get a better sense of movement there, as they’re slower than the building movement. With that test, I’m also doing another where i’ll move the layers separately and compare the two to see which is best. I also need to start colouring - this is the last and final background now, so after this i think i’m going to move onto either texturing or some character animation.
I did some zoom tests for Jamie this week. He hasn’t gotten back to me about his set yet, so I’ve just started to carry on doing the 3D camera movements.  They’re going okay, it’s my first time doing zooms but not my first time with the camera as I used it for my fables. It’s a little weird getting used to the movement, but with practice I’m sure I’ll figure it out.
I looked at some websites again this week for some references, and it’s really helping for ideas of my own. It’s also introducing me to some really cool animators/illustrators! Some are local and some aren’t, but it’s been fun looking at others animations and ideas!

Final reflection
Reflective Journal – Final
My work this term has really been effected by a number of things I was dealing with outside the course. Although I was not able to finish anywhere near as much of the work as I wanted, I really enjoyed these projects. I will try and finish the puppet particularly in the Easter holidays as I was learning a lot from the trial and error construction and think he could have been a really interesting character.
Narrative Strategies - I really enjoyed the challenge of writing the screenplay and loved the research and trying to adapt a story into the screenplay style although I found it quite difficult. I am not entirely happy with my finished screenplay and think I could have made the dialogue a lot more effective, I had difficulty condensing what was actually quite a long story down into just a few short clips. If I were to turn this into an animation in the future, I have a good idea of how I would want it to look although I would do a lot more research on screenplay writing! I was really disappointed that I wasn’t able to complete my critical analysis and only handed in a draft. I did a lot of research on this project and learnt a lot throughout so hope that comes across in my blog as it does not in my analysis.
Lip Sync - The lip sync project is another part I would love to continue working on as I am desperate to get my computer skills up to scratch so I will be able to less difficulty in projects in the future. Lip syncing is also an important part of animating so I am eager to gain the skill.
Bestiary Project - The Bestiary Project was one I was incredibly excited about and really liked my idea for. Due to a number of outside issues my ability to manage the three units suffered massively and I was unable to complete this project in any way. It is something I would like to complete in my own time as I am desperate to get the hang of puppet making and stop motion and I would love to see the design in real life! I still learnt a lot from the project and think I have gained a little more perspective on how long each individual aspect will realistically take.

Week 3 Summary
Onto the third week now, and this week was one I enjoyed. We were introduced to our animated sketchbook project. I have also spent some time find a new film to base my morphing project around after finding some other potential avenues to explore.
In our animated sketchbook session this week, we were shown some examples of how we might address the brief. The answer to the brief is open, there is no right or wrong essentially, just explore and record. We were also shown some examples of how to study and to observe, and the impact it has on our work. What stood out to me this week, was the drawings from imagination, against observation. You might be sure that what you are drawing is a representation of a particular, yet when you actually look at the subject, most of the time, there is much more to appreciate and consider. It is with these fine details, where compositions find flaws, and the details are minute and easily forgotten without observation. I feel the importance of drawing from observation has been stressed onto me, after seeing the difference. Even using observation drawings as a starting point before using my imagination gives a greater authenticity to my compositions. I look forward to what I will produce along this project.
I feel I have reached a conclusion this week, regarding what I might create for my morphing project on After Effects. After watching a few films along the week, I have decided to base my animation around a recently feature film called BirdBox. The film embeds itself into the horror genre, supernatural and demonic would be connotations of it’s sub-genre. The driving rule that survival is dependant on is to not take off your blindfold and don’t open your eyes... otherwise you will be doomed. An evil entity presents itself to its victim, tempting them with what they miss or desire, and alluring them to commit suicide without calling upon any degree of rational thinking, like moths to a light bulb. I quite like the concept that if you don’t look you won’t be effected, but it is that unknowing and curious nature we all have, that niggles away in your subconscious, it’s something I hope I can incorporate into my animation.
In our research lecture this week, we explored fairy tales. We begun by covering the learning objectives of this unit and how we should address the essay. The relationship between animation and fairy tales sit closely hand in hand. Fairy tales and success are intrinsic to each other and have withstood the test of time, and animators knew that fairy tales would be the perfect story to work with. By definition alone, fairy tales and animation are similar to each other, exciting ‘wonder’ involving ‘marvellous elements and occurrences’, which resonates throughout animation.
Overall I feel this has been a good week. I have started my After Effects animation, however, it is going to take some time before I feel I have come to grips with the software. For some reason, as I try to morph my shapes, whatever I had previously composed simply corrupts and I have no reason why. I have been watch YouTube tutorials to try educate myself but my outcome seems to be different to those of the tutorials. I think it will be best to try to find my own way of doing it. It was extremely frustrating not being able to translate an idea into reality. Hopefully this time next week, I might have made progress.

03/02/2019
This week I tried to take pictures with a camera, but it did not turn out very well. They became very grainy and not very bright, I could not find a selection for long exposure to be longer than 30sec, so I decided to go to  DSLR inductions in university.  I have taken pictures before, but I did not know for sure what did what.  In the lesson, the teacher showed how to use the camera and helped out if we had a specific project. He suggested two ways of making my pictures, with long exposure or high f stops. During the night I had the same problem so I tried to do them in the morning. In the picture is seeable a bed and a window, but if the window is the right contrast the bed is not seeable or vice versa, so I made a picture separately for the bed and the window and photoshopped them together.
For the upcoming personal tutorial for story adaptation, I did story beats. I am not sure if I am doing it right so I will not start writing it this week. I’d rather be sure and write it on a weekend than have more time. I think I’ll be able to manage it.
Most of the week I've been working on my character performance video. I’ve started smoothing out my movements and at the same time to do my lip sync. I had some troubles with pronunciation, mostly because English is not my first language. Characters looked like a fish needing for air.  Also, I did most of my animation not using the graph editor but just framing it out. Miley suggested to try out doing it with graph editors. Next animation that I will be doing I’ll try out to do with them.
I also finally finished doing my rig. Used the slides that Jon has made on VLE. They helped me a whole lot because I had already somewhat forgotten how to do them over Christmas. I did a few tests with my character and chose what picture in the background would suit the most. All though before making the pictures I had already in mind what I wanted them to look like so it wasn’t hard to choose. The first test I did was without the background and I added it later, and with other two, that I had to make for bestiary project, did the other way around - I put the background first and adjusted the animation to it.

Year 2 Weekly Summaries - Week 13
Tumblr media
Day 1 - Character Feedback Session with John : Jekyll and Hyde
In todays feedback session ,  John gave me constructive feedback on the two characters I had been working on over the Christmas break. Over the Christmas break I developed two turnarounds and took first hand reference of New York City. The two turnarounds comprised of both the Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde characters and heavily drew influence from 1920s New York. The first character is a Wall Street accountant who enjoys playing poker as a hobby. For this character I tried to convey the sense of arrogance that I noticed when I was in New York from watching people walk by around me . John liked that I wanted to draw in a sort of Disney style as he thought the shape language I could convey would greatly benefit the character design as a whole. He also suggested that I should look into the type of fabrics used for the different classes within society and show how that would greatly effect the character design process as a whole. He also suggested that I focus more on the character itself first and later focus on the elements of the setting I had drawn as well. He also liked the silhouette and design of the next character ‘ Ace of Spades.’ Ace of Spades has a similar build to the accountant character as he is in duality with him. The major design difference is that the characters head is an Ace of spades that floats above the torso. Ace of spades is the character I have chosen to model as I feel like creating the Hyde personality will give me more options for the walk cycle and transformation sequence in Maya.
Furthermore, I began to model the character in z brush and started by using the mannequin Z sphere . I added two more Z spheres around the head two give more mass to the head and also establish the shape of the ace of spades early on in the process.  I then added the clay build up tool to establish key landmarks on the torso and began to create the form design on photoshop. Tomorrow I will further develop the model and begin to add further layers of detail onto the design as a whole.
Day 1- Group tutorial with Lindsey
In todays group tutorial I was able to explain my idea for the screenplay as well as show the character designs to Lyndsey. The feedback I received was that it was a good concept and focused heavily of the them of an angle and a devil within Stephensons novel. Lyndsey also suggested that I look at the five stages of a classic tragedy to fully help realise the structure of the narrative. She also gave an indication in into how I would write the dialogue within the scene and showed how I can use a montage within the script to show the progression of the character within the mob. I found this feedback very helpful and I will look to better structure my screenplay and develop the characters family before the incident with the mob itself.
Day 2- Open media lab modelling session
In todays open session made major improvement to the model of the my character. I decided to start again from scratch as I have found that this is the best way for me to improve. Using the skills I learned yesterday from the previous model I was able to quickly establish the land marks and key areas onto the body. I also found that I sculpted the head of my character much better than previous iterations as I was fully able to achieve the rounded curves around the base of the head. On the contrary I need to ask for support on how to fully detach the head away from the neck to give a true reflection of the character I had created in photoshop. This will also support the form of the torso as I am currently building up mass along the shoulder and towards the traps. But if I make the mass to large it will greatly effect the build of the character in relation to the head itself. By moving the head upwards I can complete the base of the ace of spades and begin to create the collar of the shirt for the character. Furthermore, I need to work on creating the hands for the character as they are too small and thin due to smoothness of the arm. I need to add more mass to the palm of the hand in order to establish positions for the fingers and thumb relative to it.
Day 3 - Introduction to Retopology 8th January 2020
In todays session with Adam I was introduced to retopology. For this we exported a head from Z-Brush to Maya. For this Adam advised not to scale as it transferred into Maya as this would mess up the high res sculpt created in Z brush. I started using the quad draw tool around the main landmarks of the eyes and mouth. By creating a loop around these this made it easier to connect up rather than starting from one point. I tried to not create triangle or have any gaps. As well as not having a 5 point intersection from quads as that would cause major issues when baking within Maya. I am looking forward to retopologising my own character after I have finished modelling.
Day 4 - Narrative strategies screenwriting
Preparation for screenplay- many screenwriters begin with a beat sheet often bullet pointed. The stories key events and incidents- anything that moves the story forward is a beat.
Preparation: the outline:
Written to help you visualise your story
A bit like a short story. Write in full sentences and paragraphs. No need for fancy language
Always third person, present tense
Flesh out each beat by adding detail and description
Try to think like a camera - don’t waste time on what can’t be shown or heard
Doesn’t (usually) include dialogue
Can include slug line/ scene headings
Screenplay- 1000 words
Reflective essay - 1000 words
Running time of a screenplay is estimated as 1 minute per formatted page
As a rough guide assume 150 to 220 words per page.
There is no set word count per page: it will vary depending on
Dialogue
Scene action
Use of white space
Formatting
Screenplay written in Courier 12 point font
Celtx and written duet is free screenwriting software
Show what works on screen as animation
5 basic conventions
1.Give each new scene a heading or slug line - written in caps.
INT/EXT interior and exterior
Location
Time of day
New scene begins with change in time or locations
2.Slug line is always followed by scene action/description(even if just a single sentence)
Scene action- the non dialogue bit of the script
All the actions and descriptions
Introduces and briefly describes characters and locations
Cover any other relevant scene’ business’
Keep description simple, clear, visual.always write in present tense
Limited to what we can see and hear on screen
Characters name in caps first time only
Descriptions are brief
Lead the eye- show us visuals in logical order
Splitting the action is if you want to show a series of separate actions simply place each action on a new line
Montage is exactly the same layout
Spec script is written for a reader. It rarely includes camera angles or scene transitions
However all scripts traditionally begin with fade in and end with fade out an the end
3. Dialogue layout
Headed by the speakers name
Appears in a central column down the page
Single spaced
Less is more -film is primarily a visual medium
Can be broken by lines of actions
4. Parenthetical's
To show who a character is talking to
Or if tone contradicts meaning
Mainly used these days for little bits of action that occur during dialogue
5.sound
V.O - voice over
O.S - offscreen not in shot
You can put important sound effects in caps
