Okay challenge mode. You are a therapist and Eridan Ampora from Homestuck has just walked right out of his intro page into your office. How do you fix him?

put him and karkat in a room with a pile of stuff and tell them they can't leave until they've jumped into it and talked about their feelings

#realtalk therapy doesnt work unless the person getting the therapy puts in the effort to make it work #eridan starts the comic in complete and utter denial that he's in need of help #so there's really nothing i nor any stranger could do about that #HOWEVER he does talk to karkat often about his feelings (and vice versa) and #the reason they didnt hang out during the game seems to be #1) they were on separate teams and didnt realize the teams were the same team until later on #2) by then it was too late and eridan had aggro'd all his angels #3) gamzee was deliberately keeping eridan away from karkat and vice versa (likely bc gamzee had a palecrush on kk)#4) karkat was too busy falling victim to his own insecurities abt being a leader to pay attention to his actual friendships #4a) eg. it shouldve been the time player doing the frog hunt with kanaya & not the blood player #like im not saying moirallegiance with karkat would have fixed all of eridans problems but i am saying #what eridan really needed was a friend who took his problems seriously and could see past his bullshitting #and karkat already WAS that friend - they just never hung out #so by the time the meteor rolls around eridan has spent WEEKS feeling abandoned anxious and alone on his death planet #and karkat has gotten used to not thinking about eridan too much #so karkat - who is basically eridans only actual friend at that point - isnt able to get through to him & eridan snaps #like the thing about sburb/homestuck is that it really stresses the importance of friendship and working together #letting each other help with each others' problems #thats why the smallest viable game is still two people by necessity #so when we see things like gamzee snapping or eridan snapping or vriska snapping #as much as these are the 'fault' of the person snapping they also need to be viewed as comprehensive team failures #the people who should have spent the game together didnt and the people who shouldnt have spent the game together did #vriska was allowed to bully tf outta tavros and nobody intervened #eridan was left all alone and nobody tried to help him #and everybody was mean to gamzee and nobody tried to connect with him #and you know whose job it is to make sure the right people are hanging out together? the blood player #and unfortunately our blood player was so insecure that he was doing jobs that werent his to do #im not saying pale erikar would fix homestuck but i am saying pale erikar is a symptom of things being fixed in homestuck

Going into Black Sails knowing nothing but a) it's about fucked up pirates and b) some of these men are gay has been an incredible experience because I've never gone into a show knowing people were queer and so Rapidly devolved into "nonono none of these men should kiss, that will cause immense harm to everyone around them." I'm halfway through s1 and the fact Flint will eventually be with anyone, regardless of gender, is haunting me.

In the interest of not spoiling anything I will say nothing except that I am cackling over this. You're so correct. This is the mood of the entire show. Every time someone kisses on Black Sails I hold my hands over my eyes not in secondhand embarrassment but in dread. They should've listened to Billy and foregone the fuck tent, just like... as a whole. 😔

#I am hoping that halfway through season 1 means you get the fuck tent joke but that's in episode 4 so I can only presume so haha #god maybe I'll watch black sails next week while I'm working from home #black sails

Books of 2024: June Wrap-Up.

Okay, y'all have Convinced Me--I'm going to start doing little wrap up posts! Behold: a shelf of what I read in June (not pictured: the bookmark at page 466 of ORDINARY MONSTERS, because despite having read two (2) books worth of book so far, I'm still not quite done with that one).

June was kind of a slow reading month for me (I did a LOT of writing, looking back--nice). I wanted to take OTHER TERRORS and THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE a bite at a time so the horrors and figures of rhetoric (respectively) didn't all run together. Both of those, much like A SHINING, turned out to be pleasantly leisurely wanders, whereas MONSTERS is kind of a plod.

I already did bigger write-ups for TERRORS and SHINING, linked in the bullets below.

OTHER TERRORS - ★★★★ Great bite-sized horror anthology with a really inclusive mix, as promised! I enjoyed most of these (always nice in an anthology!)

A SHINING - ★★★★ Weird fucked up heavy little book in translation, lit-fic flavored, but very approachable, I thought. Tiny enough to swallow in a sitting, but also kind of exhausting to do it that way? I'll definitely reread this one in the future.

THE ELEMENTS OF ELOQUENCE - ★★★ Fun romp through rhetoric! The examples were fun, and I appreciated the humor, but I also find myself still uncertain what a bunch of the figures actually ARE, definitions-wise, despite having read a book full of so many of them (I did just buy his recommended A HANDLIST OF RHETORICAL TERMS to help with that, at least, which is. almost entirely. definitions by volume). Neat thing to have on my references shelf, but it wasn't as excellent as I was hoping it'd be.

ORDINARY MONSTERS - 466/658 pages read; will report back later (but it's not looking good, folks).

#alright snark and ship wars aside i get where you’re coming from tho #if you're genuinely interested in my thought process here i would love to elaborate #which is exactly what I’ll do!#first of all! the post you linked is about headcanons #which my brain kinda wants to put into a whole different category than ships — fandom ships in particular! — but i can leave that aside #because there IS an argument to be made that relationships are an extension of characterization and personality traits #if you wanna go that route i would wanna explain that Bloom's and/or Valtor's interest in the other is in fact based on canon #(even though I don’t really think ships need to be established in the source material. make shit up that’s what fandom is for #1) the Andros episode speaks for itself. Valtor specifically tells the Trix to back off because HE wants to be the one to fight bloom #2) the episode before that he asks questions about her (and only her; even though he has more powerful enemies to worry about)#demonstrating curiosity about and interest in her #3) that same episode (or the one before; can’t remember) is their infamous first meeting #where time LITERALLY slows down as the pass each other on the stairs #they get IMPACT FRAMES #the whole color palette changes!!!#idk about u but I eat that shit up. love the drama of it all no one does it like them #I’m gonna skip all the instances where Valtor is spying on Bloom through his little scrying spell because oh god who has the time #let’s go straight to Bloom #if I had a week I would not be able to collect all the moments where she growls his name in pure fury and single-minded determination #she gets a little bit obsessed with him over the course of the season and I personally think that’s very sexy of her #Bloom is known for her tunnel vision when it comes to her past and origins and Valtor's existence fits PERFECTLY into that #it ties in neatly with her overarching story of the past 2 seasons #literally PERFECT foils #which always makes for the juiciest stories #4) she singles him out for a duel in the museum episode #5) she can literally feel his presence #6) the mere mention of his name sends her into her weird faux enchantix #of course there’s no romance in canon but there’s TENSION AND CHEMISTRY which is all u really need for a ship #all their animosity and bad blood is what makes it so INTERESTING to wonder how they COULD work. it’s the spice that makes for good fanfic!

i am going to die at bitterloop's hands and it's literally not even good

#i have been working on it for a month. it is currently just under 14k. i have been thinking 'the end is in sight' for over a week now.#ive gone through 3 iterations of the last scene and this iteration has now stretched to 14 pages and is fully 1/3 of the fic.#i barely fucking remember where i started. there are 40 recurring themes and im trying to juggle them all to satisfying completion #in the same climax except my plan for the climax has changed 4 times and i think my emotional throughline snapped somewhere.#i have rewritten this entire fic front to back once already before it even had an ending.#for 3 days in a row now ive got up in the morning and thought 'i can finish it today' and failed.#I HATE THIS FIC SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!! Most of my comics are drawn on standard letter paper (8.5"x11"), and to date I have filled 23 pages! I usually manage to fit roughly 6-8 comics per page.

#ask #I have several more pages filled in a sketchbook for practice/studies and my 'better drawn' work #Each square panel is 1.5 inches (1/4 of a sticky note) and I use pretty small nub ink pens.#I actually hadn't counted how many I had filled (in my head it was roughly 1 new page a week) so this was a cool prompt to do so!#it's also wild to go back and look at my old comics! Really hits home how far I've come!#I felt so confident in my 3 panel format. Only to give it up by like... comic 11.#I meant to take a picture of the first early pages and compare it with the new comics but oh man taking photos was never my strong suit.#I hate shadows. finished homestuck!! and adding it to my ever growing list of ‘media near-universally labelled as cringe that actually kinda slaps’

#like i won’t lie parts of it? terrible. i can’t even begin to piece together half of the lord english plot #but i think a lot more of it was actually really really good. especially act 4 and act 5 they were my favourite hands down #act 6 not so much. like separately? i loved the alpha kids and the dancestors and the concept of the cherubs was really interesting #but somewhere the execution fell short. it’s gonna annoy me cause i can’t figure out why #i think it might be the retcon. which i didn’t hate as an idea!! but it occurred closer to the end than i thought it would #i feel like if they’d explored the impact of the retcon more it might have flowed better?? idk #idk. act six as a whole i’m split on. i either loved what it did or was massively confused and exasperated by what it did #it’s like half of the comic and i got through it in about a week when it took me like a month to do acts 1-5 #and it doesn’t feel like that much happened it’s weird #but yknow. it is the act that sold me on vriska!! like i liked her before but i really liked her ghosting it up in this act #the bit where ghost vriska and ghost terezi found each other nearly had me in tears #vrisrezi as a whole. what a concept. easily one of the best dynamics in the entire thing #i really hope terezi finds vriska post-canon. however i’m not sure if i want to read the epilogues and homestuck 2 or not yet #ooh ooh also!! john fulfilling his quest slapped!! that’s probably one of my favourite bits in homestuck ngl #and omg. did not see davekat coming i won’t lie but i was v happy about it #k ill stop now bc i will end up listing half the characters and my favourite bits about them. and as fun as that would be #i really need to sleep haha #homestuck

That one poll reminded me of how one time in high school one Ms. Pease saw me quietly listening to my ipod in the hallway waiting for my next class and she just ripped it out of my hands. And I was staring in pure dumb shock for like 30 seconds and she was like "are you coming or not." She then proceeded to explain, once we walked the whole fucking school to her shitty little office she shared with 15 other people, that ipods aren't allowed in hallways. Which was news to me on account of everyone had them or cd players. She was known for being horrible for no reason but damn. I wish it was her who got arrested for cocaine

#it was a Spanish teacher. and not even the one I had whom everyone immediately suspected #let this be your sign that if you hate high school kids don't be a teacher #that was my one and only interaction with her miserable ass and I literally hope she died horribly years and years ago #a history teacher who caught me smoking once was sympathetic about my stolen ipod and helped me get it back and she was a literal angel #more of her and less of Pease in the world #people used to joke about the language department's food based names. Like Mr. Crabb and Ms Pease and Mr. Kofi #Mr. Kofi was a native French speaker from Cote D'ivoire. he was my French teacher and he was awesome. And they pronounced his name wrong #I was lucky I got him. We also had a teacher who taught French and Latin and spoke both with the strongest British accent ever #not to disrespect her or anything. She let us watch Gladiator in class. And I told her after like 3 weeks of class I finished the book #and she said ok here's the next one. if you get through that you can move up a whole year and go from Latin 1 to Latin 3/4 #after winter break. and I did do just that and I got the best grades in Latin 3/4 too #at Latin day I was a junior so I didn't get picked for the kartamen team (sp?)#and they lost first round #meanwhile I took multiple choice exams all day. My favorite. and I got 1st 2nd or 3rd place for every single one #so I literally won 10 awards all my myself at Latin Day. Just by taking multiple choice tests. they must have felt so stupid #I received those awards onstage at school the same day I got like 3 or 4 medals for the National Latin exam and the state exam #and the mythology exam #so I went home with like 15 awards that day so fuck you everyone who didn't want a junior on the kartamen team. My body must really think its being funny, with my period being late and suddenly a nosebleed happening outta nowhere...

#who i am kiddin- theyre ALWAYS late #help. the nosebleed actually kinda scares me cos. last time i nosebled it was 4 years ago. id nosebleed multiple times a week and for 10min+#for comparison my first aid training adviced us to call 15 (911) if a nosebleed last longer than 10min haha #except i wasnt gonna call Emergency services every FUCKING time cos itd be way too often #after 3 months of this bs #i had to get the inside of my nostril CAUTERIZED #ye like with fire #it lasted 1 sec thankfully but it hurt like a bitcj.! not crying and screaming pain. but right under unbearable level #so i am. very much NOT into going through all this AGAIN #specially since its the OTHER nostril bleeding. the not cauterized one 😀#rambling into the void #fun #humor #perso #to delete #blood. blood everywhere.

#ive been having some real big art thoughts and feels about my art process - some good... some confusing #im more mentally organized today than i was last week...but its still really confusing and idk where im going from here :0 #all i know is that 1) im going through a very very slow process of my art evolving + my process changing - since earlier this year #2) i have not let myself slow down and appreciate the art of creating like i used to - due to many factors: mainly fear of losing relevancy #3) and i feel that im taking my art too seriously for something that is suppose to be enjoyable & satisfying #4) also im influenced very easily but outside sources (which isnt technically good nor bad)#and thats it. thats all i have to report :3 lol #anyways. its a REAL CONFUSING art time for me rn but just sketching privately and not finishing my wips seem to be doing something good atm #sometimes i fear ill end up stuck in this frustrating period & that this is it from now on..but thats silly & this isnt my first rodeo :0
