love the use of colors in your art it looks so eatable do you have any tips for how to get such vibrant, smooth colors like yours?

It depends on what program you use, but for me I use a combination of SAI and Photoshop. On SAI, they have these sliders here to help toggle your saturation and value intensity

If your program has something like this, this is gonna be your best friend when toggling your saturation. If the S slider is all the way to the right, it's probably too bright. If the V slider is near black, it's probably too dark. Another big help getting used to what colors pair well together is researching color palettes and themes. In my early days of getting used to color pairing, I'd hit up Pinterest and look up palettes like 'fall palettes' or 'sunset palettes' and compile a fuck ton together to use when doing practice art. (Though I am aware now Pinterest steals resources from other artists so do some research and see if there are any free color palettes available for use under correct terms <3)

Get creative! Trees and water don't always have to be green and blue! Make them bitches purple or pink. Play around with it and see what works! Prime example;

Those trees are PURPLE FJKNGFJGNFKJ and that bark back there technically is some variant of pink if you color pick it. And the trees are like, gold LOL But it looks good when you back out of it

Another fun tip is doing color palette challenges. Pick a palette and only use the color swatches available. For example;

This was maybe five or six different colors from 1 palette. Part of the challenge is picking colors from your swatches that would closely make it look like whatever the original base color is, so that when you zoom back and look at the finished product, it still looks like them. But now there's *flavor* lol

Never use green or black as a shading color. Trust me just. don't. Purple and orange are good colors to start with, just set that bitch to multiple and lighten the opacity, it'll give it a warm hue (that doesn't mean you cant ever use green or black, but when starting out just try to avoid it JNGFKGFNJKG)

Another palette challenge example obviously is this one;

Obviously Yang is not orange LMAO nor is Blake purple. BUT you can tell they're still them with the correct tone settings, just stylized now. This was all maybe 4 colors at most. I used Yang's skin tone as Blake's eyes and vice versa!

Just takes practice <3 Lots of trial and error and repetitive motion, eventually you'll get a knack for it!

I just got done reading the most recent issue in the Evil Zur-En-Arrh Alternate Personality Batman made a murder robot because Bruce won't go far enough Arc, which was interrupted in the middle by Incomprehensible Joker Origins: Origins of the Joker Arc, and before Evil Zur-En-Arrh Batman was Gotham War: Batman says All Crime is Wrong (don't worry about the fact that he's a vigilante), and before Gotham War was Shadow War: Kill Ra's al Ghul, and before Shadow War was Fear State: Future State 2 but with Scarecrow this time, and before Fear State was Joker War: This one had Punchline or something, and before Joker War was City of Bane: uh oh Alfred is dead, and somewhere in there was The Wedding: Or Not Actually because Batman Can't Be Happy, and if we go back even farther there was the War of Jokes and Riddles: The Joker and Riddler have Beef for Some Reason and before that, you get my point.

Last week I read Detective Comics 612-621 and guess what. Every issue had a new plot. There were no wars. Batman saved people. The only issues that had an ongoing story arc were the issues where Tim Drake's mother died. And you know why that worked? Because it didn't come right after some other Life-Changing Event.

At some point Comic Book Writers all decided that they had to leave a Mark. Alfred is dead. Batman gets married. Batman has a homoerotic frenemy from his past who's the Coolest Guy Ever that sooo much page time is going to be devoted to instead of like, Robin or someone. There are Three Jokers and at least one of them, it's unclear, was trained by one of the guys who trained Batman. Everything always has to one-up itself. I'm so fucking tired of it.

I genuinely think that every Batman writer should be forced to write like twenty issues featuring the Condiment King or some equivalently stupid villain before they're allowed to touch the Joker. Either they'll give up or they'll be forced to take themselves less seriously.

design notes: i looked up some punk album covers for inspiration and went for a poppy color palette to reflect the energy of the song. i love working with colors but it can be hard to control sometimes with readability because of all the competing elements haha, colors took the most time to decide. i think it looks really good as the little song icon!

for the punk elements, i did this magazine paper cut out effect for the title by changing letters to different fonts and moving them around, then drawing over to mess up the edges. i also put ripped paper where he's kicking a hole through the poster, referencing his burst

i wanted to break up the solid area at the bottom of his shoe, so i put the electro symbol for scara to step on whenever he walks. rebellion ‼️‼️‼️🦅🦅🦅🦅

Tumblr Hack Week, January 2024 Edition

Once again it was Hack Week (more than just a day!) at Tumblr! This is getting repetitive in the best way. A couple of times per year we slow down our normal work and spend a week working on scratching a personal itch or features we want as user and see how far we can get with our hacks. One thing from the last Hack Week in September made it all the way to a new experiment out to some testers: Tumblr Patio!

Here are some of the projects that got built for our most recent Hack Week in January. Some of these things you may also end up seeing on the site…

Spoiler text, spoiler blocks, and centered text!

This one is so obvious and amazing, it’s wild we don’t already have it. For Hack Week, Katie added the ability to select text in a paragraph to be hidden behind a wall of black that can be revealed with a tap. This can be super useful to hide spoilers. And even better: whole spoiler blocks. And while we’re here, the ability to center text!

A plethora of new default blog avatars

We haven’t updated our default avatars in several years. (Some of you may remember this one from 10+ years ago.) They’re feeling a bit stale to us, so why not update them? And while we’re at it… make a ton more variations! Paul from the Tumblr Design team came up with a suite of new default avatars, using our latest Tumblr color palette. Here’s a look at some of them, but there are actually many dozens more using different colors:

Notifications and emails about engagement on your posts

This one is for the folks on Tumblr who love numbers and their Activity page. Daniel, @jesseatblr​, and the Feeds & Machine Learning team worked on some new notifications and emails we could send out to people about how their posts have been doing lately on the platform, such as how many views they’ve gotten, and by how many people. We already have this available (and more) when you Blaze a post, but why not open it up to more people? It’s really useful to the folks who use Tumblr to help build an audience for their work!

A new way of navigating the web: the Command Palette

Some apps we use a lot have a “command palette” accessible via a keyboard shortcut for quick keyboard-driven access to different parts of the platform. For example, Slack and Discord have Command + K to access their quick switchers to hop around conversations. What if Tumblr had one? Kelly and Paul built one! Press Command/Control + K on Tumblr and you can use your keyboard to jump to your blog, Activity, your recent conversations, search, dozens of places!

The designs and color palettes are based on my own interpretations of the aspects and their classes. The rage aspect changed the most since I believe their powers are based upon all emotions and not JUST rage. So their color palette is meant to represent overwhelming emotions with two opposing colors that are very bright.

Oh also, these are 100% free to use and change for whatever you want for any reason at all! I don't care!

Lesson 1: "White Man Painted Black"?

Okay, I recognize that this is a strong foot to step off on! But! If you learn nothing else from this series, if you decide for whatever reason to forsake me: this is the ONE perspective I'd like you to take away!

You may have heard this quote before, when Black fans deride a character design as 'a white man with the brown bucket tool'. On its face, it means exactly what was said. But specifically, what it means is that we recognize that whomever designed the character drew the way they normally draw for a 'default' character in their mind- default usually meaning White/Eurocentric features- and they added a shade of brown within the line art to make that character now 'Black'.

Now if you're feeling defensive, wait just a moment! This discomfort is not inherently a bad thing!

I'm going to use both a 'real world' example first, to show you what your Black fans and peers are seeing, and perhaps you will also understand our discomfort!

(if anyone was curious, my folder for this lesson is titled 'brad' lmao and you'll see why)

(I'll have y'all know that I actually worked very hard to make Blackface Brad look mildly presentable lmao I'm sorry, I'm wheezing, I can hardly breathe looking at him 🤣)

You see how, despite knowing where this was going, and using one of the darkest shades of brown in my Skin Tones arsenal, you still know that that's Brad Pitt? That nothing about his hair texture, his lips, his nose, or really anything other than the palette change... changed? And you can still see that?

It's incredibly hurtful to be told that that's supposed to be you. You know it's not, you know why it's not, but rather than hearing how it makes you feel unseen and what they could do to be better (since they wanted to draw a Black character!), the artist lashes out at you.

And as an artist, you might have worked VERY HARD to do this! That might be a real handsome guy you drew!! But... is he really Black? Did you walk into it with the intention, that you were drawing a Black Character, or did you draw a character that just happened to be Black? It seems like a silly thing, but it matters!

Okay. I just finished laughing over Brad. Now let's get into some more perspective changes:

Now, imagine you drew a character. You want to make her Black, so you change the hair and skin colors. All right! You have your Black character... right?

Changed ONE feature about her? (You should obviously change more than one feature, but let's just go with the simplified example.)

What if, instead of just changing her palette, we changed her:

Hair?

There isn't nearly enough time in the world, let alone in this little scribble and blurb, for me to describe the IMPORTANCE of Black hair in Black character design. There are so many ways to do curls, afros, braids, twists, locs, SO MANY HAIRSTYLES!! Get used to searching in the 3C-4C hair textures!!!! I plan on doing an entire lesson or two on hair alone, but suffice it to say, Hair Texture is thee BIGGEST giveaway that you 'painted a white person Black'- from cartoon styles to realistic! It reveals itself in your writing as well- just based on how your character takes care of their hair, how your describe the texture, how other people might perceive it... it lets me know just how much research was done. Because we can have straight hair! But again, that's a conversation for a whole 'nother lesson so- come back later 👀?

Lips?

I love our lips, I really do. There's a long history of shaming Black women in particular for the way our lips look. So when I see them done in all their glory, it makes me very happy. Two-toned lips vary in shade and intensity, so make sure you're using references if you want to be 'realistic', but it doesn't have to be that hard. Even a little subtle shift like this in the design/story description lets me know that a creator was thinking about me.

Nose?

One thing I've noticed ever since I starting drawing is that... people in a lot of mangas/manhwas barely have noses! I admit, out of all the features on the face, the nose isn't the most important. I think they should be, especially when you want to emphasize that your characters look different! People have different types of noses! I especially want to gear this towards those with a goal of drawing realistic portraits and the like- there, the nose is ANOTHER dead giveaway. There are Black people with aquiline and straight noses- we aren't a monolith- but is that why you drew it? Consider why you went for that nose specifically. That's part of the intent, in all this!

Now, you might be looking at me and going "Ice... this is just character design". To which my answer is: Yes! It is! It feels so basic, and yet if you ask your Black friends/peers how often they've come across this feeling of not being properly drawn/written, from fanart to professionally produced works, it's unfortunately common despite how simple of a concept it is.

I hope that you can walk away from my first lil lesson with new eyes. Remember, it's the thought that counts, but the action that delivers!

IM OBSESSED WITH ALASTOR X VOX!SISTER READER! (also hi its pixie again lmao)

ok so i was thinking that since vox!sister reader is a “pampered princess” because vox has the power and money to give her anything, alastor does the same! so after a day of hanging out with alastor and shopping and stuff, vox!sister reader goes back to the vees tower wearing red (alastors color, while her clothes r mostly blue to match with vox) vox immediately gets reminded of alastor seeing her clothes and he gets rlly angry and jealous and stuff, and ofc since alastor is a cocky little shit, he makes a broadcast for vox to hear to tell him how much of a good time he and his sister had to piss him off even more! :3

I enjoy writing Vox!sister with Alastor. It brings me joy knowing Vox is just gnawing at his wires knowing Alastor and his baby sister are a couple in very sense of the word hehehe~

You loved when Alastor took you shopping. Through you could and did have anything you wanted thanks to your brother, it was nice that your lover still chose to spoil you just as much. Today you were out buying a whole new wardrobe and decided that you were in need of a new color scheme. You always wore blue. It was your signature as Vox’s sister and a color you declared only you could wear. But as of late, you strayed from the comforting color to a more fiery palette. 

“I’m home!” You shouted even though you knew your brother already knew you were home. You had your assistant bring all your bags in and you heard the familiar zap of Vox entering the common area. “Finally! I thought I was gonna have to-what the fuck are you wearing?” Vox growled. You smiled and spun around “isn’t it the cutest!? Never thought of myself as a red girl but this color is gorgeous!”

Vox screen glitched. You were wearing red and black. Your usual blue completely gone and replaced by the radio demon’s colors.

”You spent money to look like that fossil? Sis we just finished your closet like last week”

You pouted and shrugged “A few different pieces dont hurt, besides I think its cute to match with my boyfriend”

That’s right how could he forget that Alastor was dating his baby sister.

You skipped to your room with your bags and began to reorganize your closet. Again.

Vox growled as he rubbed his screen.

His antennas buzzed at the change of frequency and his mood became even more sour as Alastor voice filtered through.

”Salutations wayward sinners! I just had a wonderful time with my girlfriend. You lot might know her as the Voxtech pampered princess. Yes yes i know what you’re all thinking…” 

Vox eye twitched.

”me and the little lady had quite a time shopping today. That darling is a looker I tell you, she can make anything look good. My those hips and legs really know how to make a man sweat” Alastor laughed.

”Anyway you might notice the Vees tower slowly changing. I think red is a lovely color and so do my darling.Maybe be on the lookout for a new design change folks. After all blue is such a dull color hehehe”

Vox was fuming.

”I am so going to kill him”
