this might be my heavy obsession with Godrick, but wow going through the land I'm really picking up a lot of the stories around Limgrave and the Weeping Peninsula, from freely roaming fields of trolls, Godrick forces guarding a trap chest that leads to Lydenell, and even Demi-Humans being contained in a lower area under watch via a ballistic. I absolutely love Godrick's region and how warm and adventurous it makes me feel as I explore and observe the surroundings

Persons of Interest: The Nameless Revenger
Name: Unknown Title/Alias: Unknown Champion Race: Unknown Gender: Male Occupation: Unknown Laborer (former), Champion Affiliation: Maned Wolf Clan?, Misbegotten Notes:
Fought until only he was left standing
Reforged the swords of his clan into a single massive blade
Symbol of a maned wolf on hilt
Attacked Castle Morne on his own
Defeated by Lord Godfrey
Sword monument raised in his honor
Grave (cenotaph?) located behind the castle.
Revered by Misbegotten
Grace pointed towards his sword
Edgar was concerned about it falling into the wrong hands
A tarnished of no renown is not the wrong hands.
Wielded a handheld ballista, which was also preserved.
Laborer who led a rebellion, but later became a champion
Was he a laborer before his rebellion or after his defeat?
Either way, it seems he survived, and even rose in ranks. Godfrey must've been impressed.
Godrick's axe bore a very similar crest, with the beast of Stormveil instead of the "maned wolf."
A composite symbol perhaps?
Conclusion: I've thought long and hard about how my hands wouldn't be the wrong ones for such a revered blade. The only answer I've been able to reach is that it's not the sword itself that's important, but what it means. As a complete outsider, I cannot grasp the significance of this sword, and the only thing truly notable about it is the hilt. The maned wolf might be the key.

Oughh I love it when Games incorporate preexisting characters and pick up plot threads whilst also leaving enough room for Mystery, hinting at the larger setting without showing all of it.
Like Elden Ring. And the Hit MMO FFXIV. And. Warframe, kind-of.
Heolstor was in the base Elden Ring
Okay ok ok so, his lore is basically that he was one of the countless victims of a "hero" (a term very often adjacent to Erdtree/GO people in Elden Ring setting), bent on resentment and revenge, and it took the form of the 'rain', right?
But!!! Do you remember that!!! In base Elden Ring, there was a character who was one of the countless victims of Godfrey, bent on resentment and revenge, and ASSOCIATED with the sole location where clouds never dissolve and where the rains never cease?
Castle Morne is one of the places usurped by the Erdtree/GO (Edgar is a servant of Godrick). Heolstor is also apparently an enemy of Erdtree/GO people in particular; Revenant's family 100% hails from Leyendell, Wylder's clan are like model Tarnished descending from Godfrey's warriors, initially his shape is restricted with a golden dagger binding his arm and bandages with golden runes, the last thing to stand against the Nightfall is an apparition of the Erdtree, the whole thing about the Night is that it nuked the actual Erdtree and what stemmed from it...
Lmao Hornsent is welcomed to hold Heolstor's beer I suppose. Get the FUCK out, GEQ and Stormlord, we are having a fuckin AU version of the Revenger xD 😎

Observations at the Liurnia West Coast Fire Monk Camp
Spent some time running around looking at stuff in Liurnia on my level 30 co-op profile, in between being summoned.

Something that becomes apparent with Elden Ring is that coop play is optimal for certain types of observation. Notably, when you reload back in your own world all of the enemies will ragdoll drop at their spawn points. Case in point - from the location where this fire monk is standing, the Carian Research Hall is positioned directly in front of the Divine Tower with Rykard's Rune.

So my first priority was to carefully compose a shot where the central larger Fire Prelate Helm is facing directly forwards, which happens to align the soul item with the "Fire Spur Me" emote on its left eye.

"Helm engraved with a sacred countenance and housing a cauldron. Attire of the Fire Prelates, commanders of the Fire Monks. It is said the cauldron perched atop the head was originally furnished with embers, and would surge into flames when the wearer's faith reached its zenith." - Fire Prelate Helm
Also of note here is that the purple soul item with the Fire Monk's Prayer Book is emerging from the left brazier. I would infer that this head represents the origin of the Fire Monks - building on the idea of faith reaching a zenith.
"Prayerbook of the Fire Monks, who came from the Mountaintops of the Giants far to the north. Can be given to a learned cleric to gain access to the following incantations: - O, Flame! - Surge, O Flame!"
"Incantation of the Fire Monks. Momentarily sparks roaring flame from the caster's hand. Charging enhances potency. The Giants' Flame still smolders upon the distant northern mountaintop, and the Fire Monks are its guardians." - O, Flame!
"Superior incantation of the Fire Monks. Creates a stream of fire to burn the area before the caster. This incantation can be cast while in motion. Hold to maintain the effect. The Giants' Flame is the flame of ruin, capable of burning the Erdtree. And so, following the War against the Giants, its ruinous blaze was sealed, and guardians were appointed to watch over it." - Surge, O Flame!
There are 4 benches encircling the braziers. I decided to guide observations by capturing the scene when sitting at them and looking forwards.
Bench #1: The "Fire Spur Me" thought appears in front of the Prelate Helm as if it is a concept being studied. To the right two braziers are aligned, in front of a wooden post, in front of a vertical rock spur, and off to the side is a 14-spoked wheel (same number of spokes as the Wheel of Logarius in Bloodborne). To the left there is the corpse that holds the Fire Monk's Prayerbook, positioned over the top of the bench and looking in the direction of the thorny stake. This I assume to be a preview of the end - as such items on corpses typically represent the abandonment of an idea.

Bench #2: From this bench the entire corpse holding the Fire Monk's Prayer Book appears to be burning in a pyre generated by the Fire Prelate helm. On the other hand, it seems more apparent from this angle that the fire helm on the righthand side is following in the trail of the wheel being pulled by the cart.

Bench #3: From this vantage point the Fire Prelate Helm is positioned with the fire on top of the cart wheel in the distance as if it is being consumed by the flame. This location would also seem to be giving a hint of who occupies the bench that is left from this vantage - the Fire Prelate Helm with the Scorched Butterflies hovering over it and looking off in the direction of the lake.

Bench #4: The most apparent observation from this angle is that the large central head is burning the Carian Study Hall, which is partially aligned with Rykard's Divine Tower, which is aligned with the Colosseum at Leyndell. On the other hand, "Fire Spur Me" is in vertical alignment with the Divine Tower where Ranni's burned flesh can be found. The Erdtree also looks particularly translucent from this vantage point.

Bonus: Assuming that "Fire Spur Me" and the "Fire Monk Prayerbook" originate from the same brazier, this also aligns with the far distant Erdtree in the Altus Plateau that is lacking foliage. And I was so focussed on getting that screenshot that I didn't realize until later review that I missed the 2nd and more obvious alignment. There is this great alignment where the Fire Prelate Helm with the Scorched Butterflies above it has the optical illusion of looking like one of the more typical fire basins suspended by a tripod of wooden beams. It is also in direct alignment with the thorn stake, which is in alignment with the Divine Tower where Ranni's burnt flesh can be found.

And that was that for this session. Maybe I'll go back again sometime and also record the direction that each head is facing. There's another good spot for sitting on benches and looking at stuff further to the south at the Cuckoo Soldier campsite.

I fear i am becoming addicted to Elden Ring. 29 hours and Ive played for 3ish days. :u How far i have come from moving 12 feet in Bloodborne, dying 45 times and earning a stress headache and a pained jaw (from clenching. in frustration)
#ramblecroft#ive always been enchanted by the world and character designs of ER#but feared the souls game mechanics#however this is really fun and if i encounter something too frusterating i can just#galivant off in a different direction and explore for awhile#anyway i fear i took my friend's advice of 'do everything in limgrave/weeping peninsula' too seriously and became overleveled#tldr i beat goddricks ass in and the tree sentinel was way fucking harder like holy fuck

Something I don't think enough people talk about in Elden Ring lore is the usurpation of Marika by Radagon.
It's subtle, but the signs are all there. The most obvious are in their statues and portraits.

Marika is bowing her head and in shadow. Radagon is looking towards the Erdtree with his head held high. The choice to have his hand sticking out towards the viewer is a really odd one. He wants to emphasize that pose. The power difference between these two pictures is staggering.
Then there are the statues at the churches:

Marika is again bowing her head and her arms are up in the same crucifixion pose she's in at the end of the game, while Radagon is in a cruciform pose. Superimpose the two, and he's the cross she's hung on. Plus, behind him is the lattice that seals off the Erdtree. Her feet aren't on the ground, while his feet are and are surrounded by roots (a common symbol in statues throughout the Lands Between). And if these two statues were made by the same sculptor at the same time, then all the statues across the lands between were replaced at around the same time, replacing any possible depictions of Godfrey as well as older depictions of Marika.
And we know what those older depictions looked like! Look at the Stake of Marika (when it isn't broken, that is):

This is more likely an older depiction. Her arms are wide for an embrace, not suspended above her. She's looking down in benevolence, not defeat.
We see the same pose in the intro, her statue looking down on the dead Tarnished being sent home. Since this takes place outside the Lands Between, this must be the depiction that the Tarnished carried with them:

And then there's the Church of Pilgrimage in the Weeping Peninsula. This is where the Tarnished left from and were supposed to one day return. There's a statue of Radagon there, but Melina doesn't mention him. She just mentions Godfrey.
Then, after thy death, I will give back what I once claimed. Return to the Lands Between, wage war, and brandish the Elden Ring. Grow strong in the face of death. Warriors of my lord. Lord Godfrey.
Think about this. Really think about it. Why would she want them to come back? Why would she want them to wage war against her?
She refers to Radagon as "leal hound of the Golden Order" while dressing him down. To me, this implies that she is currently at odds with the Golden Order. And if you think about it, none of the Golden Order spells refer to her. Some of the Erdtree incantations do. But there's very little even mentioning her once Radagon is her husband.
It just seems really obvious to me that Radagon was the one calling the shots in the last days before the Shattering.

Yesterday I managed to reach 30 on my new character, so so far so good. I can't remember if levelling up slows down as you go because the rune requirements get larger, or speeds up because rune drops also increase and you get more consistent about winning boss fights
So my elden ring character is like level 160, and the recommended levels for the dlc is 120-150. If I want to respec this character I'll have to play NG+ until I can respec, but at that point I'd be fairly overleveled.
I guess maybe I should just start a new character, and save all the respecs for when the dlc comes out and I have more possible builds to try out.
Hopefully I can hit 120+ in like a week

Heolstor might be a Carian in-law, or just a Carian + Ranni tried to prevent his raise too?
So, he has a Moonlight Sword! It is a staple in Fromsoft's games, but in Elden Ring setting, it is a customary gift by a Carian queen to her chosen one
+ not a ring finger, but it reminded me of a ring of purple gemstone that Rennala is depicted wearing (also not a ring finger, funny enough):
So, I wonder whether he also was engaged with a Carian at some point? He is apparently an AU version of The Revenger from Weeping Peninsula whose whole nation got wiped off by Godfrey ( x ), and sorcerers from Liurnia, Carians included, were also enemies of the Erdtree before Rennala's marriage!
I am actually questioning whether it might have been an existing character? 🤔
I was not sure what to make out of the fact that in Japanese original script, Ranni says that now "the night is infinitely far away" besides the fact that 'age of stars' is somehow a different type of the 'night' than whatever it was that she presumably prevented!
But now, seeing that Nightreign's whole poster is an Elden Ring that was altered into a blue version with crescent motives, that Heolstor has Elden Ring inside like Radagon once did, and that he has a sword gifted by a Carian princess to her consort (and maybe their customary ring), I feel like I know just the person that can offer some insight on this situation!
The thing is? The Carian princess in question here is not Ranni, but Renna herself! It is especially apparent by how Lazuli Conspectus sorcerers in Raya Lucaria were already a thing before Ranni was even born, and they wield this crest!

@val-of-the-north explained why the Snowy Crone is Renna in a way more detail in this ( x ) post, but all in all, Renna was long time ago dead and became the four-armed blue cursed ghost herself:
Ranni's motivation is to push the Elden Ring out of anyone's reach as it is the tool to hack laws of nature and people's fates according to your own vision, and allow a presumably more "objective" force (the stars) guide people instead!
But if Renna knew Heolstor, and already was dead from old age (?) by the time Ranni found her, she might have also added something like "Oh by the way there is another guy who will seek to nuke the Golden Order but not for a noble reason that you do, he will seek revenge upon all living after what happened to him, I don't know when or if he will raise but you might want to prevent him from taking the Elden Ring as well :/". So now, along with other things, the Night is also "infinitely far away", because Heolstor did as much as he did through taking the Elden Ring!
Now, I am not sure whether Renna herself was his bride! Could be that, could be someone else but she would still know about him through being family in law. Maybe Godfrey nuking his country even was the actual reason Liurnia became hostile to the Erdtree? The thing is, trolls, close allies of Carians, were traitors of the Fire Giants that sided with the Erdtree during that war instead! A Troll named Theodorix was even glorified as a hero by them. Raya Lucaria soldiers also seem to honor the Golden Order's ways, as they specifically loathe Albinaurics for their "impure blood" and went against Carians because Rennala "was no god, after all" (so, didn't like how divorce effected her). Original Raya Lucaria sorcerers also respect the golden amber along with the stars, as the source of ancient life, as said by Sellen, just that they aim higher for the cold stars!
I was confused, but with the new information, it started to feel like it were Carians specifically who went against the Golden Order! It just meant roping everyone in Liurnia with them too, since they are literally the rulers of the region! And maybe Heolstor's people being killed off and Castle Morne / Weeping Peninsula usurped became the trigger. Something more like 'well when we decided to not do anything about the usurpators we didn't expect they'd eventually usurp us :/'.
At the same time, there is also the whole fact that "night and flame" is exactly what Heolstor inflicts on the Lands Between x)
He must have been in a very close association. Alternatively, maybe he himself a Carian princess that went a very separate way to establish a different territory and country, but the Erdtree could not let someone thrive without their authorisation. -_-"
+ fun fact that might be a coincidence but maybe not: Weeping Peninsula and Liurnia are the two regions where whole settlements tormented by Frenzied Flame exist! A residence of Carians, and a residence of a Carian's consort......
UPDATE: @sahashbelvanie left a comment and:
youtube
Yes, seems like the Moonlight Sword restricts him, it isn't necessarily his.
sjhfshdsh Well, folks, perhaps like 70% of the post is cancelled, it is JUST about how Ranni intending to stop him along other things was foreshadowed XD
