Yay, I have more free time so I can continue to work on our new game "Autumn, Coffee and Magic" with my dear friends, Weird Birds team ❤️ Finally, I have designs for witch aunties, drawing in such a simple style feels very refreshing, hehe.

Witch sneak peek!

Ah, that’s a good cup of coffee… Oh? You had to fight quite hard to get everything, didn’t you? Well, that’s the life of a witch… Have I ever told you about my quest to find the midnight marshmallow?.. No, not the hot chocolate kind. The plant. Yes, there is a plant. Do you want the story or not?

Hey, so, due to reasons, Weil is getting less work for the next month (and honestly, thank gods), so lets try and do something fun.
We in Weird birds had that idea for a game about a man lost in the Fae realm, somewhat inspired by the Odyssey. And, well, Weil listened to Epic the musical a bit too much this month, so.
The goal is to make the barest demo of the base game loop in a month. Not much of graphics, but get the tech pinned. The intention is to have a 3d tiled backgrounds with a 2d prerendered character done with sprite sheets, and make turn-based combat RPG-style. Plus, dialogue system and some sort of controls for theplot progression, rudimentary for now.
Better plug a good inventiry system from start, that can be easily extended. Got stuck there in the first project.
Wish weil good luck! Goal 1 is to rig a dummy.

Dev Diaries
October 1, 2023
My goodness, it's the first devlog post-Crushed release!! How did that happen???
And where the heck has 2023 gone?!?! 🙃
Okay, pausing--for like four seconds--on the sillies, I've got some updates for y'all, so have a seat and get comfy.
Crushed updated build is out!!!
Now with the rest of the partial voice acting!!!
It was a super fun experience with the VA and I giggled a lot to hear the words I wrote spoken into existence. I think the next project I work on with voice work will also be partial. However, I can't imagine doing a whole game with full voice work. I can feel the mental break down from that possibility making its descent....
The postmortem was longer than I anticipated it to be, so it shall be posted separately (and with a read more for your scrolling needs) sometime! I go into (more) details on my inspiration and the process from hesitant idea, to jam entry, to a full-blown game, and all the heartbreak and burnout and catharsis in between!
You can also search 'gamedev rambles' or 'crushed vn' where I've already blabbed about Development Tingz LOL.
2. The HBG Twitter account has been nuked.
Yeah. Apologies if this is how you're finding out about it. I honestly have no idea where my audience is located as y'all are a quiet (but supportive) bunch. But for me as a player, it hurts because many of my peers are only on or are most active on Twitter.
However, me and the bird app have been at odds for a while so I guess it was just a matter of time... 🥲
3. Game Jam Gemini Mode
Alright, time to get serious-serious. (HA!)
While I was Fighting The Good Fight concerning getting Crushed up before the summer ended, I started dropping hints about the next project I wanted to work on with Yuri Jam (and Once Upon A Time jam) coming up.
Well. After giving it some thought, forcing myself to pause long enough to breathe, catching up on personal reading and other things, and again, giving it more thought: nope.
I could ignore this decision which I hate and push on anyway, but the consequences are not ones I want to deal with, nor will I be physically able to handle. (Yes, this is a direct reference to my health lol).
My plan about this time was to start reaching out to people and create a team--given that I banged out a script at lighting speed just so I knew what roles I needed and was prepared. I'm still not sure where that burst of frenzied energy came from, but it's gone now.
And then in between making Crushed live and getting the first voiced update done, I started to feel really weird. Like "Hello, Anxiety My Old Friend" weird. And I kept berating myself for dragging my feet, especially as Yuri Jam (and OUAT) are so 'chill' and 'easy-going' and why was I still freaking out? What was wrong with me???
Anyway, once the last voiced update went live, it hit me how utterly exhausted I was. Still am(?) So it's insane to think I was somehow going to have enough energy to lead a whole ass team to create one more project before the year ends. Even if said project was under 5k words.
Even as I write this saying I'm done, a part of me keeping scheming up ways to make it work.
But I wouldn't be doing it for the right reasons anyway (i.e. feeling like I should participate in more jams because every other developer is and I'm a bad indie dev if I don't, and feeling this desperation to prove I can tell other kinds of stories. ahahahaha)
A L S O I am broke 😂 And money talks louder than anything else!! This was the year--and continues to be the year-- of medical expenses and emergencies so like...gotta recover from that too.
The Knight Dance (my short Yuri idea) shall return, but next year at the earliest. And who knows? It might benefit from me not working on it now. Or that's what I'm telling myself so my brain will chill.
4. Tackling Ko-fi
I keep saying I'm going to start putting content on ko-fi, or posts, or something, and I keep proving to be a liar. That ends soon!
I've been playing around with the idea of adding both content for subs and one-time donators as well as free content, these things all exclusive to ko-fi. So there's an incentive to you guys to visit and an incentive for me to keep up with it.
There's a lot to the world of HSD/Crushed that just didn't make it into the games, and probably won't for a while, and then there are drabbles and longer stories that would be fun to write and share for anyone who's curious.
Okay!!!
In conclusion!!!
Go play Crushed!! Go support some game Kickstarters!! Go support a Pateron/Ko-fi of your fave creator!! Go replay some games!!
And watch this space for the Crushed postmortem and my yearly games & demos wrap up!!
And maaaaaaaybe catch me on the sideblog where I embody the cringe gamer girl I truly am???

For Anyone Who Is Using/Want to Use Bluesky (or Just Want to View My Post)
Heddo Everyone! I have finally posted to this blog after being away for oh so long. Did ya miss me? *crickets* … Yeah I missed you guys too… =^=
But anyways, I wanted to have a post for my hashtags, tips and tricks and how to grow on Bluesky and shit. I don’t know, I thought it would be good at the time so I was like, why not. Yes this will be edited as needed over time cause BlueSky is always changing and I usually TRY to keep up to date but I have some information from sites and videos that I watched that could help.
I’m also might post my other notes that I have with other social media here. If you like that, let me know here:
But, anyways. ON TO THE SHOW.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
HASHTAGS
LINKS
H A S H T A G S:
Here are a list of hashtags from highly used to least. I won’t put all of them cause there is a shit ton of tags. So if you want to see them all, here. Just be careful cause it tends to freeze up Safari if you open the link. I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max (weird flex) and it still can’t properly open and see all the hashtags. So what I did, I tapped the ( . . . ) on the website as fast as I can when I see it and download the text file of the Hashtags list.
Why is the website loading slow? It’s cause this website generates ALL the HASHTAGS each and every 30 minutes in the past 30 days. So it’s really chugging. But if you want to view on your computer, tablet, or on Firefox or Chrome (I haven’t tried the Chrome app but I’m sure it will work too) it will be a lot easier than viewing on Safari.
Link: GitHub
P.S: When you download the link you might want to download Documents to view it. Or any other Document services that opens .JSON files. I find Documents work perfectly for me. So I don’t know about others . . .
This is from the top of the list to where they have at least 100 Posts on the subject.
TOP HASHTAGS (DESCENDING)

L I N K S:
For those who are VTubers or use or make Vtubing Avatars. I have a link to the popular hashtags to be used on BlueSky.
It’s basically a little document made by the wonderful Aiyoku Nakasu.
Vtuber Hashtags: Google Doc
———————————————————————————
I found another link that I COMPLETELY forget what is does… My Bad. I usuallly put bookmarks on my home screen to use them for later but I completely forgot what this one does cause it doesn’t have a FAQ or anything. But I believe this link helps you block certain words or certain users from your feed. I think I may be right about it, I’ll test it out eventually. But it’s safe, I promise. For those who are suspicious here the picture to the link.
( I’m not giving out links to give you guys harmful viruses I know some people like to do that but trust me, I hate it too. A similar event happen to me and mom when I accidentally put her card on a site that wasn’t the true website and I SWEAR BY IT that it looks just like the actual website. But sadly, it wasn’t. And yes, we got our money back but I learned to look closer to see if the link is fake or not. And not to put our card information just ANYWHERE. That’s one the reason why I wanted to get a Cash Card, so I’m able to lock my card if anything suspicious happens. I got the card but that’s my story. So don’t worry okay? )
Oh! Right Here is the Link: Blockenhiemer
———————————————————————————
Okay! I have this link for people who want to make a thread to make it easier on themselves. It also puts the number on posts linked to the thread. (Ex: 1/2 , 1/5 and so on. Depends on how many posts you have linked together.) I thought it was neat to have. I like to make threads since I like to ramble and post things I like. Or I might post a chapter for my crappy fanfiction on there and link it to Tumblr or somewhere to read the full thing. I don’t know. I had inspiration from Elle Cross on BlueSky/YouTube to post Fanfictions there so it’s easier for me. XD I want to post more on there anyways.
Link: BlueThreads
———————————————————————————
I have this banner making website. It helps you make a banner for BlueSky (and possible Twitter if you want to). Just upload your photo and it helps you center the way you want to photo to view, how much to zoom in, if you want to repeat the image and also padding color in case you want to cover the sides that the Image doesn’t fill in. It’s very useful for customizing your profile.
Link: Bannerize
———————————————————————————
Okay. This is a simple one. It’s just a link to see if the BlueSky website is down or up. Simple right?
Link: BlueSky Status
———————————————————————————
Now, if you want to find a feed or something your are interested to see more of. I have just the link for it! It’s called BlueSky Feeds. From Furries, Artwork, tot he dark side where you have Gore and Dark Humor! It has everything and always growing each and everyday! Maybe not as fast but it’s there. XD So if you want to follow a feed or look more into a certain topic and see more of it later.
Link: BlueSky Feed
———————————————————————————
Here is another Thread Maker. There is a little instruction on what it is and how to use it. Just have to click the ( i ) button.
Link: Blue Thread
———————————————————————————
And another Feed Finder for those who want more of a variety of Feeds that are one BlueSky and stuff. I should really organize these links so they are in each category. But that’s a mission for future me. (I’m an masochist to myself sometimes =^=)
Link: Good Feeds
———————————————————————————
Now, if you want to get the best out of BlueSky. This is the best website I can find for it. It’s called Deck.Blue, and you just have to play around with it. You can make your own Feeds (I believe, I didn’t touch it much just looked at it) and even, get this, BOOKMARK. Yes! You can bookmark! Isn’t that amazing?! *more crickets* =^= Well at least I’m happy about it since the Original BlueSky doesn’t have Bookmarks or anything or that sort. Which will I will talk about in the next link!
Link: Deck.Blue
———————————————————————————
Okay, for the final and last link to help your BlueSky journey. If you want to make your own feeds cause there isn’t any or you just want a feed for yourself and yourself only (it will still be public sadly). You might want a feed for only Anime Merch, or a certain TV Show you enjoy! Just make a feed for that and you can also separate certain tags or words that you don’t want to see from that feed. Isn’t it great? I’m going to use it to make bookmarks for certain things so I can get to it later or quote it with my own shit. ^^
Links: Sky Feed
Also here is a link for those who need more help with making the feed to your likings. It’s from Elle Cross, the person I mentioned before. They have other videos so you can click on their profile to get more information about BlueSky if you want.
Video Link: SkyFeed Tutorial

Monday Chat #5 – Video Games: A Constant Cycle of Rehashed Ideas?
So today’s topic originates from this Reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/6slno9/cartoon_network_stole_my_game/?utm_content=title&utm_medium=user&utm_source=reddit
Basically what happened is that the creator of the flash game A Dance of Fire and Ice found that their was a Cartoon Network flash game strangely similar in concept released on their website…
Now, to be fair, A Dance of Fire and Ice is one of the top rated (and most played) Kongregate rhythm games whereas Cartoon Network tends to throw out their flash games every month or so to make way for content more relevant to the current programming; so overall, this specific instance isn’t that big of a deal. But what about the concept in general? After all, this has happened plenty of times – Bejeweled and Candy Crush, Crush the Castle and Angry Birds, and Pandemic and Plague Inc (just to name a few). So is there something inherently and morally wrong with the concept of “Great artists steal”, or is there some justification in it after all?
Now in order to really get a case on what a true “rip off” is, we need to focus on two things: style and substance. Let’s take an example with the CN debacle. A Dance of Fire and Ice and the CN game both have the same core gameplay element – rhythm based timing game based on two constantly rotating sprites that one has to time correctly to keep on the path. However, in style, both games differ – Dance has more of a concrete, minimalist style that models after the two elements which the game is named after, whereas the CN game… just has a bunch of shitty Gumball sprites. Secondly, there’s the substance – there’s the fact that its clear the CN game doesn’t run on Dance’s stolen code, cause the game runs like shit. That means that there’s only on real similarity between the two – the gameplay. But is gameplay copyright-able?
As you’ve probably been able to tell, of course not. There’s plenty of turn based RPGs, or first person shooters, or 3D collectathon platformers. Once one person makes a subgenre, its free for people to refine and edit themselves – as long as they make their own source code. After all, we don’t see people paying royalties to the creator of Wolfenstein, do we?
Another thing though, and perhaps a bit bigger of a deal, is with the size of the business. Bigger businesses can market better than individuals, and thus the mainstream appeal of two very similar games can go to a later game rather than an earlier one. Rovio probably had a much bigger budget to advertise Angry Birds than Armor Games had for Crush the Castle, and Armor Games had a bigger budget than all the other small developers doing similar games way before that! There’s also the choice of distribution. Crush the Castle was originally flash exclusive, which only has the audience of the every diminishing minority of those who play flash games. Rovio, however, took a chance with the ever expanding mobile app market and it ended up paying off big time. So, although people might not like it, business sense does play some part in it.
Now, all these games discussed so far have been fairly different in style and substance, but there is a possibility of blatant rip offs succeeding over the originals. Such is the case often within the mobile market. For a specific example, back in 2014 the app Bad Apples, a blatant stolen version of Cards Against Humanity, reached the top of the app store, causing it to overshadow Cards by over tenfold. Fortunately, due to some clever marketing by Cards Against Humanity – and the poor development upkeep by the Bad Apples creators – Cards was able to regain its spot in popular culture as the original adult party game. Still, one might consider poor moderation of the App Store like this proven case to lead to many other undiscovered rip offs that succeed the original in popularity by many times.
Now, to go back to the main question – is the original always the best? After all, is it really that much of a shame that the content rich and well maintained Plague Inc is more popular than the fairly barebones Pandemic series? Honestly, I think that as long as there are not blatant rip offs of a game, it’s fine to have a sub genre generate and to enjoy better, later games that come out of it. It’s always good to remember the roots, but it’s not mandatory to love them. So while the developer behind A Dance of Fire and Ice isn’t exactly justified in his worry, I think he’s in pretty safe hands.
- -
Just a quick heads up – there will be no new Monday Chat next week. I’m moving into university, and then on that weekend am going to a related camping trip, sparing me no time to write. But hopefully after that I’ll be able to make room for continuing to make new posts in my schedule.
Currently reading: I finished Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka in a single night, and damn was it darker than I expected – a great read, and worth spending a couple of hours on. Still, I’ve decided I’m going to chill on the digital library for now, seeing that my physical book collection is pretty sparse and I can probably run through them fairly fast. I’ll probably make this my main backlog goal going into university.
Currently watching: As I mentioned before, I saw Dunkirk in theaters. While I really enjoyed the movie, I still don’t understand Christopher Nolan’s insistence on adding some level of non-linearity to his stories, even if they don’t make any sense. In this movie its particularly blatant – each story takes place a certain amount of time from each other, a la one week, one day, and one hour. But the stories all end up lining up in the end… so what’s the point? It seems like Nolan just added this in since people know him as “the weird mindfuck story guy” and kind of as an afterthought. I feel like the movie would’ve been a bit more cleaner and more coherent without this in place. Still, despite this – I mean, it’s a Nolan movie, right? – it’s still damn good. 8/10.
Currently playing: Mostly Skyrim and Mount and Blade Warband mods… though I DID start running a new NCAA Footbal 09 dynasty game (you know, what all the cool kids are doing right now) with the plan of making a long game that would use the import feature for Madden 09’s franchise mode (pretty basic stuff, everyone knows this), but then I remembered I was going into college and probably didn’t have time to do all this. Whoops.
Currently listening: Been picking up on a few new tracks. INOJ’s Time After Time cover has some pretty bumpin’ aesthetic. My Dead Girlfriend’s Danke is a solid banger. Other than that, I’ve been listening to some miscellaneous KPM tracks.
Well, that’s all for now. Remember to follow Codex of Aegis on Twitter and Facebook for more updates.

M.o.M. | Friday Dairy #1
I felt the need to change my physical pace before starting to work on anything related to gamedev. After spending an intense spring break deep cleaning I went through a whole bunch of emotions.
I was physically haunted by weird dreams and nightmares, random photos reminding me of the past and the dead, and lots of dust. I got rid of pounds and pounds of crap taking up space in my life and it felt so good. Most of those pounds actually belonged or were given to me by people no longer in my life and probably will never be in my life again. I was dragging other people’s weights they had let go of a long time ago.
As soon as that deep cleaning process was done the electrical sockets in my room stopped working. In an eerie way it almost felt like this strange rebirth. During the day I would work through arranging the stuff I had left, making sure almost everything had a place and nothing was on the floor.
At night since my room was clean I noticed little things like spiders crawling and the birds that sing outside of my window after 3:00am. I wonder what kind they are. They sing a very pretty song.
I chose to focus on keeping the things that relate to my present version of myself. So a good half off all the books in my library are gamedev related after the deep cleaning. I’ve skimmed some, but haven’t really dived into any. They were buried under all that stuff.
But now I’ve started to go through them. Right now I know I am very weak in gameplay mechanics. I would say my strongest skill in gamedev at the moment is research and writing followed by art (which is not that strong but it gets the job done).
Last friday I spent some time with other indiedevs who were just busy working on their own little projects. I didn’t know where to start so I used the time to do a brainstorming session on the next game I am going to make. I had to decide if I wanted to go back into my past gamedev idea journals/dream journals or start something new. Since I had just finished spring cleaning and I was exploring some really obscure French theories on metaphysics, creativity, and multi generational elements in games and storytelling... I ended up brainstorming a game loosely about that.
The working title is Mouse or Monster (M.o.M.). For now its about looking at shadows and trying to figure out if you are dealing with a mouse or a monster.
Since I know I am so weak in gameplay mechanics I am going to play around with developing mechanics for a few weeks. I have some good ideas so the next step would be to do rapid prototyping. I already started using twine to prototype story feel. I hope to wrap that up by this weekend. After that I will do some simple paper prototyping. Then transfer whatever I come up with to the best of my abilities into gamemaker or unity in a few weeks from now. Probably gamemaker. I feel like if there is something actually there... and I still want to stick with this project by then, I would try to get someone else on board if it jumps to unity. Else I will let it go and move on to something else.
The purpose of this project is to make a selfish game. I know that sounds crazy. Like most indiedevs when you lift the lid on them only make games they want to play. But I have this really hard thing where I’ve been stuck in pleasing other people that I really don’t think about the shit that makes me happy and that I actually like. I mean its easy to please me on a simple level but to really wow me takes some work.
So can I wow myself? Not by making something ridiculously fancy but just something that I actually love. I’m so good at working for others so this alone is going to be a challenge equally hard if not more on the emotional side as well as the development side.

Once upon a Stormy Night
As a parting gift for this messy year, Weil finally tested the last bugfix Kirian made, and reuploaded the result of Weird Birds summer struggles.
It is our submission for Yaoi Game Jam, a short visual novel, where I did the backgrounds and coding, @haelvogel did some marvellous art, @masterofrecords wrote the text (and oh god, I love the writing in this thing), and our friend Kirian wrote the dialogue system (which is magic).
It is a supernatural romance (or not! There is a possibility to just stay friends, though we did not have enough time to explore all the complexities of human - and inhuman - relationship) story with two main interest characters and a supporting cast of weird Cat and Raven. A lot of misunderstandings, a lot of humour, handsome characters (I will praise my friends, yes).
It can be played in browser, on Android, on Win and on Linux. (Looks like you can save the game in browser if you are logged in on Itch.io, btw). And it's also completely free.
Also, here is the post about making 3d for this game!

Brotherhood of Tinfoil - Fallout 4 Nuka World Season 5 EP45
Full Synopsis: We continue our discord on Youtube, and the good results of making so many videos. We decide to help the Brotherhood out again. We get jumped by an Assaultron. All alone. Weird. As we fight off some raiders, we accidently shoot a Brotherhood Wirlybird. They derp, and fly away, on the ground, through trees. The trio takes out some ghouls on the railroad tracks. We decide to go and help the Brotherhood again, and it’s a chaotic fight with Super Mutants, 5-6 nuclear explosions. Apparently the Brotherhood, didn’t mind us shooting at its bird...? We give a Super Mutant a new bung hole. We head into West Roxbury Station and more he ll breaks loose. Eventually we make it into Fallon's Department Store.
