1. hello!! any fics wher we get more backstory, lore or details about wei changze? in canon we as the audience knows almost nothing about wwx's parents, just as wwx himself, and when i see it being explored on fics it's usually just focusing on cangse sanren and her connection to baoshan sanren and xiao xingchen.

i wanted to see fics that talk about wei changz3 as more than a servant and a footnote, only coming up to remind wwx that he is the son of a servant (if he really is one, since wcz was a powerful cultivator? jfm's right hand man??), which very on brand with the mdzs cultivation society, but also as his own person

+ not necessary but if it features wwx being his father's spitting image, or even fics that just mention that he looks just like his dad

I read one about wwx transmigrating into an a/b/o world were he was married to lwj and I loved it.

B) Wwx and Lwj get reincarnated, both of them do (as in neither of them cultivate towards immortality.) Then they meet again, whether they recognize each other or fall in love again and remember later. Although I'd prefer that the reincarnation isn't just some modern au of canon- it doesn't even need to have the rest of the cast. Even being born with different names is okay.

C) The last one: wwx and lwj are the juniors' high school teachers who haven't met previous to the job, and the juniors set them up/discover their relationship.

Zhao Yuanzhou and Wen Xiao are.. not that into each other?

Oh, they love each other. Very much. But not that way. There are quite a few moments that are supposed to look like a kiss, but clearly aren’t. There are two moments where they, in theory, might have actually kissed. At least, I remember two. But they ended up not to. And I think that’s because neither of them actually wanted it.

The first time is in episode 23, right after WX fluted the malicious energy back into submission. ZYZ is slowly coming to his senses and it looks like he is going to kiss WX. And perhaps she is going to let him:

But.. was he really? Sure, he stops, because of his contract breaking chest cramps (caused by him not working together as a colleague as it states, but as a good friend, which is not the same as a colleague and technically also breaks the contract – Another one of my hills, actually). Although from what he says, he believes that she isn’t real. Implying.. that he wouldn’t even kiss her in his dreams or fantasies? Also, WX’s expressions do not make her look like she’s eager to let him go ahead and do it. She doesn’t turn or pull away, but she doesn’t make a kissy face, either. To me, it looks more like “Don’t, don’t, please don’t”. Could be me, though.

The other time is in the Wilderness in episode 28. ZYZ and WX are talking about things like origins, choices and destiny. WX mentions being afraid (of several things), ZYZ says she doesn’t have to, because he’s there. She says something along the lines of if they are going to live, they might as well live together. And then ZYZ does a ‘might kiss her’ routine again. This time, WX clearly turns away and asks what (the beep) he’s doing.

ZYZ says he wanted to ‘seal’ the decision to live together. In that case, WX is fine with it and they have a cozy forehead press event. (which turns out to be a way to.. peek into WX’s thoughts or something? Or perhaps they just talk. Either way, this is what gives ZYZ the idea that WX may be poisoned and he has questions for Momma Tree about that.. but that’s later and unrelated. Kinda.)

So.. yeah. To me this, and other things, show that they’re just very good friends, perhaps a sibling-like relationship, but romantically.. they just aren’t really a match. Somewhere around episode 14 (I think) and a bit before that, it’s suggested that for the split up token to work, Baize Goddess and the matching demon need to be in love. So I guess that’s why they try to keep up appearances, but in truth, WX is more into PSJ and ZYZ may or may not be more interested in ZYC. Although he does keep up appearances, even to the point of threatening to hinting at wanting to ask WX’s (step/adoptive) dad to marry her. If he chooses a role, he is going to act it out. Or something like that.

Fangs of Fortune Recs!

By popular demand! This list is very preliminary, since new stuff is being written all the time! But for now, here are a few of my favorites:

Throw the Windows Wide by achray (@achray1)

You know when an author writes a fic that captures exactly the vibe of a pairing that made you fall in love with that pairing in the first place? It’s so hard to do, because you have to start by perfectly capturing both characters as individuals, but this author makes it look effortless. Here, Zhuo Yichen sees Zhao Yuanzhou kissing Li Lun—a sight that definitely wasn’t meant for him—and has a conversation with him about it afterward. The author’s command of the characters’ speech patterns and body language is flawless, and this fic gave me SO many feelings about these two. Bonus 1: it’s followed by a VERY HOT sequel. Bonus 2: I would rate this as pretty accessible to folks who haven’t seen the series yet. Bonus 3: check out the same author’s Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Demon Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask), which is SO cute and features a lot of embarrassed Zhuo Yichen (my favorite!).

One of the great gifts this show gives fic writers is the multiplicity of opportunities for fuck-or-die setups (or, to be more specific to the genre, “only dual cultivation can save you” setups), and there are several great examples, but this one is my fave. Set during the arc when Zhuo Yichen is carrying around massive amounts of demonic qi but no demonic core to ground it… well, I can’t do better than the author’s summary: “Stop me, then.” Li Lun isn’t looking at Zhuo Yichen at all when he says it, all his attention turned to hurting Zhao Yuanzhou instead. “Save your precious Xiao-Zhuo daren. Fuck a core into him yourself.” Absolutely nobody is having a good time in this fic, each for their own different reasons, and the angst is so, so delicious.

Honorable mention goes to full of tangled karma by angryteapot, which uses dual cultivation to solve the Episode 34 dilemma with a delightful mpreg threesome scheme – come for the porn, stay for Wen Xiao righteously and literally kicking Zhao Yuanzhou when he’s down because he trampled all over her agency.

Silly Concern, Serious Question by dykemania (@yeliuxi)

After the mpreg joke during the Ying Long arc, Zhuo Yichen asks Wen Xiao if she actually thought he might be pregnant. Their conversation is so tender and so vulnerable – the author has such a great handle on their relationship and on the two characters as individuals: Wen Xiao matter-of-fact and protective, Zhuo Yichen bravely persevering through his embarrassment. I’ve re-read this like three times already because reading it feels like a warm hug.

I also recommend Onmyo-Jin’s (@onmyo-jin) awesome collection of bite-size fics, of which my favorites are Out of habit (Zhao Yuanzhou doing a great impression of the cat who sits on your laptop while you’re trying to work) and In danger of you (the classic “we’re being chased so we have to make out to conceal our identities”).

Finally, I love fruits of your labor by ghostrunner (@witchmachine), which is another great fic that’s super accessible to folks who haven’t taken the plunge to watch the show yet. It’s a missing scene from Episode 31 (the gathering-branches-from-the-sacred-tree bit), but most of all it’s Zhuo Yichen and Zhao Yuanzhou finally stepping over the line between friends and lovers, taking joy in the discovery of one another’s desires.

(And I’d be remiss if I missed this opportunity to plug my own post-canon fic, The Wedding of the Great Demon, which is also very accessible for a reader who hasn’t seen the drama yet!)

Don’t mention it! I blorb too much about things I really like it embarrasses me at times. I’m just glad you like my takes!! Anyway:

😭😭😭😭 this drama exists to hurt us,, I think more than dying for people he cares about (because nearly everyone who died did that), Ying Lei's characterisation and death provides a unique but tragic pov within the main cast

Ying Lei my poor Ying Lei. We don’t really talk too much about him don’t we. So let’s just talk all about him. CHARACTER ANALYSIS TIME YAY

Ying Lei is unadulterated sunshine and has a good heart. Morally, he is on the same page as the rest of the team. Yet, it absolutely breaks my heart that his fate is to be an outsider within the thematic concern of choice in FoF and resultingly, in the narrative.

His place in the overarching thematic concerns of FoF is unclear when we first meet him - he is simply a wandering half mountain god half demon with a bright disposition. But as with many characters in FoF, their appearances aren't just for naught. Ying Lei's representative theme - the freedom of choice and the ability to choose one's identity - finally shows itself in one of the most beautifully written (am biased) episodes of the series, Episode 17, which is all about choice.

In this episode, Ying Lei vents his displeasure of the Wilderness towards grandpa Ying Zhao

"I hate this place. I hate the Wilderness. It's so bleak and desolate. (…) If I have to stay here forever, I'd rather die. (…) I like the mortal world. I like everything that is vibrant and lively."

To which grandpa Ying Zhao gives him his blessing to head to the Mortal Realm,

"…as your grandfather, I respect your decision. You can be a Mountain God or an ordinary person."

His next sentence cements the plight of many demons (and humans) we encounter in the story,

"For many demons in the Wilderness, their lifelong dream is just three simple words… Have a choice."

These three words all the more juxtaposes Ying Lei's freedom to choose his identity, against every other character who faces this fate of not having a choice.

The Lie Demon, unable to say her true feelings until her moment of death, and Fei, who shares similar sentiments as Ying Lei about the mortal world,

"I'm a beast of calamity, I don't deserve to live in the mortal world. But I really like the bright lights, the liveliness and happiness, and the prosperity here." (Ep 13)

And Zhao Yuanzhou, where even in the same Episode 17, echoes Ying Lei's words,

"If this world gave me life to be manipulated by malicious energy, then I'd rather die."

Same words, but a different way out. Or there isn't one at all.

Ying Lei is the only one whose fate hasn't been carved out in stone for him. Even after Ying Zhao's death, he is still able to leave Kunlun Mountain and rejoin the team because he has the support of other Mountain Gods watching over the temple. He is by no means a pampered and spoiled person but he swims in a wealth of freedom. His bubbly, charming and affectionate personality is a physical manifestation of his unburdened self, unbeholden to any ending, except for the one that he wants.

And yet, he chooses a life with the group of people who never have had the option to choose what and who they want to be. Wen Xiao, the Baize Goddess; Zhao Yuanzhao, the vessel of malicious energy; Bai Jiu, determined to bring his mother back; Pei Sijing, the forced breadwinner of her family's martial heritage. To show his determination to be with this group, he never again dons the mature get-up (full sleeved robes and long hair) - his representation of maturing and accepting his responsibility as a Mountain God - after returning back to the Mortal Realm. Rather, he dons the get-up he first roamed the Mortal Realm with (or similar), metaphorically putting aside all that celestial burden in exchange for the friends that he desires. Just who in the group can as easily shed their very roots and history? His precious freedom to choose ironically makes him the outsider in a group whose only wishes are to be able to choose.

He gets along with the team, but no matter how many times he ties the knot of fate around them, these people were never his fate to begin with. Fate found the rest of them and demanded they be bound. Ying Lei wrestles that rope of fate, trying to get in, albeit with rejection. The narrative demonstrates this:

The team was initially formed without him, and he joined later them of his own accord - his own choice - while the others literally were forced to sign a death contract to be together. In the later episodes, his affection for Bai Jiu is often overshadowed by Bai Jiu's respect for Zhuo Yichen. He also continually tries to get both Bai Jiu and Zhuo Yichen's approval - head pats, anyone? Zhao Yuanzhou doesn't trust him to look after the dragon scale. In their conversation with Bing Yi, their team count is five, instead of six. His closest companions within the team are each other's confidants.

Even at his very end, the narrative still denies him a fate with them. He dies for Bai Jiu who is the only person he loves wholly, and fades away before Bai Jiu wakes from his coma. Neither gets to say goodbye. Bai Jiu who genuinely mourns his death, dies for Yichen. In a story where the cyclical nature of fate runs deep, there is no thread of fate that leads back to him. There is no resolution or reciprocation for Ying Lei's soul and sacrifice. Every thread is cut and never retied, no matter how he tries. Siheng has Sijing left to remember him. Yichen keeps Baijiu close to his heart. Wen Xiao and Yichen wait for Zhao Yuanzhou to return. But no one truly reminisces Ying Lei. The only people to do that are dead.

Ying Lei's tragedy lies in his freedom to choose. In a world where most fate is predetermined and choice is a scarcity, his death is all the more painful as every act is a conscious choice toward an unknown end. He carries a burden after all - the burden of writing his own story. And he braved each step with that brilliant smile of his.

TGCF Draft vs. Final: Garment Redder than Maple, Skin As White As Snow

Back at it again with a new arc! Starting from Chapt. 12, we start at Xie Lian back in the heavens and end on the heavenly officials' stumped dialogue about why Hua Cheng would come help Xie Lian. In the 7seas edition, this is all content from Vol. 1, Chapt. 5: Red-Clad Ghost, the Burning of the Martial and Civil Temples, ending on the very first page of Chapt. 6, which shares the same title as this section in the revisions.

Major changes:

Rather than the section starting with a conversation with Ling Wen, it starts with how the fear of another Human Face Disease breakout was a "false alarm," wasting the time and efforts of the Middle Court which dispatched half of its gods to investigate, and Xie Lian immediately joins the communications array upon returning to the heavens.

Minor changes:

Xie Lian says that his reascension has been more tiring than when he was collecting trash.

Feng Xin no longer mentions sealing Xuan Ji. He just says that General Pei needs to come deal with her.

Qi Rong is still not named. He is only "The Green Ghost."

The questions that were previously posed by Xie Lian—what about the corpse forest and was the green ghost present—are now discussed without him asking. Mu Qing brings up the presence of the forest, and Ling Wen (rather than Feng Xin) responds that the Green Ghost wasn't present. Xie Lian speaks up to ask if Xuan Ji was the Green Ghost's underling.

When Xie Lian speaks in the communications array, it does not get quiet or awkward.

Xiao Pei doesn't chime in to defend General Pei. All explanation-heavy responses come from Ling Wen.

When Xie Lian asks about the child spirit, Mu Qing doesn't chime in and play dumb. Ling Wen, once again, responds and say they found no traces of it.

Xie Lian says out loud that he only knows of the "four great tales" rather than just thinking it, and when he asks what the "four great calamities" are, Mu Qing no longer chimes in with a snide comment. This means that Xie Lian's response about how difficult it is to be a mortal is gone.

Ling Wen's explanation of who the Green Ghost is now stops after she says that he's the only "calamity" not in isolation and is also not a calamity. Xie Lian then asks if he just emerged to be annoying rather than this being a part of Ling Wen's explanation.

Ling Wen now explicitly states that Jun Wu is the one who destroyed White No-Face.

There is an added sentence during the explanation of Hua Cheng burning down the temples and shrines of the 33 heavenly officials that Jun Wu "doesn't like conflict" and prefers to focus on maintaining the balance between the three realms, which is why he did not help them.

Time travel/fix-it where Wei Wuxian goes back in time, manages to save Lotus Pier only to go missing after the Sunshot Campaign.

He comes back later as the leader of his own (tiny) sect full of kids/people he thought deserved better. The Wens are there, of course (alive. God how he had wept to see Wen Ning alive) but there are also others. Mo Xuanyu, A-Qing, Song Lan, Xiao Xingchen, and so many others. After seeing so much pain and loss in his first (and second) life he is determined to make sure everyone lives for once.

And he means everyone.

He goes to the Nie sect and finds a way to prevent their cultivation from killing them. If he visits an old friend and whispers a few choice words behind a painted fan to get a ball rolling that is their business and their business alone.

He goes to the Jin sect and watches his sister (because she is still his sister even if he left the Jiang Sect. Neither of them will hear otherwise) marry what might just be the one good man in Koi Tower. He watches his new brother-in-law’s family with narrowed eyes and casually mentions the brewing feud between his cousin and the leader of a minor sect where just enough ears catch it.

He goes to the Jiang Sect and watches his former juniors laugh as they shoot kites and follow in Jiang Cheng’s footsteps as they used to do for him. The ache it causes is lessened by the relief of knowing they’re alive. Breathing and laughing and tossing each other in the lake instead of rotting in the training field. He manages a small smile for the sect leader and a bow for the madam before he leaves, glad neither of them can see the tears in his eyes with his head bowed as he thanks them for their years of care.

He doesn’t have to go to the Lan Sect because Lan Zhan comes to him with wide eyes taking in the home he had made for his people and doesn’t run when he sees Wei Wuxian with A-Qing hanging off of one arm trying to kick Mo Xuanyu for whatever childish argument they got into that day no matter how far Wei Wuxian tries to hold them apart. He also doesn’t run when A-Yuan slips away from Wen Ning and attached himself to his leg, declaring the Second Jade as his “pretty-gege” within seconds of seeing him for the first time (Wei Wuxian pouts when he is declared “mean-gege” for planting his little radish yet again). Wen Qing shouts at him from their home that is getting increasingly more packed as Wei Wuxian keeps bringing home strays. His martial uncle laughs, soft and sweet, as he finally pulls the screaming child off of his arm and tries to mediate… whatever the littles are fighting over now.

Through it all Lan Zhan watches him like he is something infinitely precious. Even with his hair hanging loose from A-Qing’s pulling at his ribbon, with dirt and dust and who knew what else after helping build yet another addition onto their house (something that has become far easier with practice. The uncles hardly laugh at him anymore and he hasn’t splintered another beam forgetting that he actually has his full strength in this life in weeks) clinging to his half untied robes, Lan Zhan watches him.

Wei Wuxian knows how to read him after two lives together. Knows how to spot the infinitesimal softening to his eyes and the flush of his ears. And he smiles back at his Lan Zhan and thinks for a second of their shared dream of a home in the countryside for just the two of them.

“Come to the house with me, Lan Zhan,” He says, and has to bite back a laugh at how their roles have flipped. “I promise the auntie’s are cooking something mild enough for even your tastes.”

Lan Zhan watches him for long breathless minutes before he nods and takes Wei Wuxian’s waiting hands.

He has the grace to look like he’s not regretting it when, later, A-Qing and Mo Xuanyu are screaming across the table at each other. If anything he looks fond surrounded by the chaos as he watches Wei Wuxian snatch a tossed dumpling out of the air without looking as he wipes A-Yuan’s face with his other hand.

Fangs of Fortune (ep. 27)

Literally nothing about this show is straight XD Finally, Ying Long mentioned my most favorite word of all time in regards to M/M relationship - zhiji, which, I guess, is closest to the English 'soulmate' or 'confidante' but could mean a whole Universe of things depending on context and the level of closeness between people. Well, we've had the ultimate type of foreshadowing - the very straightforward glimpse into the future where Zhuo Yichen does kill Zhao Yuanzhou, so now it's kind of a given point in time - the suffering is already there, we're just slowly moving towards the inevitable. The show does know how to inflict pain on its viewers D:

How pretty are they as Ying Long and Bing Yi :3 But also, Bing Yi couldn't let Ying Long go and saved a part of his soul for thousands of years D: heartbreak everywhere

But, other than that, this particular episode was so cute, and did we just have a MPREG joke?
