New Mature Content Warning Overlay (And How to Get Rid of It)

More fun community label "features"! Unlike the new mandatory label for #NSFW, this one is a bigger deal to me because it affects my entire blog and it can't be avoided by just using a different tag.

Apparently on custom blog layouts, if you happen to post or reblog even a SINGLE post that's been flagged with the mature content community label, a full-page warning overlay will appear blurring out your entire blog that must be manually clicked through every single time the page is refreshed. At first I thought this was just a bug due to my older layout but I've come to realize it's not. It's a feature (as confirmed by this recent changes post) that affects all custom themes. The formatting will vary based on your own theme but here's what it looks like on my blog:

I don't know about you but I find this is stupid and annoying. If it could be dismissed once and never seen again that might be one thing, but that's not the case. The vast majority of my blog is not "mature" enough to warrant such an aggressive and invasive warning. I also think pop-ups are obnoxious in general and I'll be damned if tumblr's going to force me to have one on MY blog.

After some desperate googling for a known workaround and being unable to find even a single mention of it, I decided to take on the challenge myself. I'm not a theme coder, so apologies if there's a better way to do this, but luckily it only took me like 10 minutes to figure out a simple fix, which I'm now sharing with anyone else who may want it:

Just copypaste that somewhere in your CSS and goodbye pop-up!

If you're not sure how to access your theme code, check out this help article. You can also add the code via the Advanced Options menu, which is actually even better (if you can get it to work, it depends on how your theme was coded), because it will then automatically be reapplied to a lot of themes without having to remember to manually add it every time if you change your theme in the future.

Obviously this will only remove it from your own blog for anyone who may visit it. If you never want to see this warning again on other people's blogs you can also add this custom filter to your ad block:

tumblr.com##.community-label-cover__wrapper

Unfortunately I do not have an easy tutorial on hand for this one as the method will depend on your specific ad block app or extension.

Some additional notes:

After adding the theme code and saving the changes, give it a minute to update as it sometimes takes a little while for the page to refresh.

The warning overlay only seems to appear if a "mature" post is on the FIRST page of your blog, which is still annoying and makes the whole thing even more pointless and stupid because what if someone visits any other page of your blog, and oh no, happens to see "mature" content they weren't warned about?!

The warning also appears on direct links to "mature" posts.

This hack has NOTHING to do with entire blogs that have been flagged as NSFW. It only works for non-flagged blogs with custom themes that happen to have individual "mature" posts.

Something I noticed in the ATLA ship tags compared to ship tags in other fandoms is that when I followed the Zutara tag I expected to see a bunch of cute fanart and amazing fanfics being on my dash like with other ships, but instead I get a few of those and a bunch of shipping war discourse. Like the ATLA shippers are fighting for their lives to justify why they like a ship while I grew up shipping characters who have never even met.

While Erza isn't too fond of reading, she is always the first in line to buy Lucy's new books. After finishing them, she runs to tell Lucy her theories and gush about her favorites.

Lucy is considering writing a series of romance novels just for Erza cause she knows it's her favorite genre

They have sleepovers! I'm not talking sharing a hotel on missions. I'm talking full pj party, talking about boys (and girls), doing each others makeup. The whole nine yards. Wendy joins in too from time to time

Erza really enjoys doing stereotypical girly things with Lucy. Growing up, she really did have people she could try on fancy dresses with and just be soft and delicate. And as she got older, her rep in Fairy Tail only further pulled her away from that side of her.

Lucy understands being put into a box based on others perspectives of you, so she always tells Erza how beautiful she is and compliments things other than just her strength, because Erza is so much more than that.

Erza does the same for Lucy but in the opposite way. You will not survive calling Lucy weak in her presence. Lucy is way more than just a pretty face

If one of them is mad at someone (specifically Natsu or Gray) so is the other. No questions asked. Lucy walks in saying she's gonna kill Natsu, Erza already has her sword out.

They fully view the other as a sister. Lucy in particular, sees Erza as an older sister and has a lot of respect for her as such.

“The softest looking man your old man has ever seen in his life came into one of the stores I was inspecting,” Bowser said, bursting into his office and taking a seat.

“Wow, dad, nice to see you too,” Wendy deadpanned, not even looking up from where Ludwig was painting her nails. “We’re fine, thanks. How was your day?”

“He came in with some kind of weird ghost thing and bought a dog leash,” Bowser powered though. “And I’m just at the counter talking with the manager and ask ‘What’s that for?”

Ludwig rolled his eyes, not that Bowser could see, and dipped his brush into more nail polish. “Maybe it was for his dog.” Wendy snickered with him behind her finished hand.

“Can it you two.” Bowser groused, before continuing his story. “Anyways, the guy goes ‘Oh, it’s for bad boys who don’t behave’, and let me tell you, kids,” he said, putting a clawed hand on his heart and pretending to swoon in a totally kingly and masculine way. “Oh my god.”

The room went silent for a few seconds until-

“HE WAS FLIRTING WITH YOU!!” Morton yelled, pointing at their oblivious dad from his position near the bookshelf.

Bowser blinked. “He was what.”

Roy sat up from the couch and looked over the rim of his shades, which had fallen a bit from shock. “Holy shit,” he said. “If even Morton could see it, the guy must’ve been flirting with you!”

“HE WAS WHAT?!?”

“Daddy, chill,” Wendy said, blowing on her nails. Ludwig had started painting Roy’s instead. “It’s not like you didn’t get his phone number, right?”

“...”

The four koopalings stared at him in disbelief. “You did get his number, right dad?” Roy prompted.

Bowser mumbled a few excuses.

Roy threw his hands in the air. “Seriously?”

“Unbelievable,” Wendy chimed.

“Hey! My nail polish!” Ludwig yelped, diving backwards to catch the bottle. “And honestly, Father. You can kidnap a princess but you couldn’t ask what I assume was a commoner for his number?”

The king growled at them in warning. It wasn’t his fault the other man had left and he still had like, 3 other stores to inspect.

Morton padded over and patted Bowser’s arm solemnly. “It okay, dad. Morton go find mystery man for you.”

Bowser groaned, slapping a hand over his face and dragging it down before patting Morton’s head in return. “Thanks, Morton but it’s fine. Now everyone get outta my office, it’s starting to smell like nail polish fumes.”

“But-,” Ludwig started to protest.

“OUT!!”

And with that, the koopalings were hastily ushered out.

Bowser would then meet Luigi a week later when he was substituting as Peach’s bodyguard due to Mario catching a cold. He’d stop the kidnapping just to ask him for his number and a date, confusing everyone present as he’d drive his clown car back through the forcefully made skylight.
