one small detail that stood out to me about this latest episode that i haven’t seen anyone else talking about yet is that when the commentators are calling colin “inspiring” and the “man of the match,” they are celebrating him not for actually scoring the goals himself, but for providing the crucial assists to make both of them happen. and i really love that because for me it’s the absolute perfect wrap to his character arc across all three seasons!
like, we know that colin’s job on this team has never been to score goals. in fact i’m pretty sure we’ve never heard about a single goal that he has scored. colin is and always has been a team player, not a star—and we’ve seen that crop up over and over. notably, we’ve seen the fact that he’s not entirely at peace with that crop up over and over: see the way he was affected by nate’s entire holidy-inn-painting monologue, being benched to make room for zava, etc.—like, this is the thing he’s sensitive about! this is where all of his insecurities come from!
but at the SAME TIME it’s also tied very intimately with all his struggles re: hiding his sexuality— “colin’s a chameleon,” etc. it’s fascinating because there’s SO much tension there between colin 1. feeling bad about the fact that he never stands out on the pitch the way some of his teammates do, because of who he is on the team, and 2. feeling like he CAN’T stand out, ever, because of Who He Is As A Person. etc. it’s like. he’s filling this role in the background. he’s afraid he’s not doing it well enough. he’s afraid that what and who he is isn’t good enough and isn’t worthy of recognition. he wishes he were someone different. trying to be someone different in the locker room is clearly making him so unhappy and stressed out. it is All Connected and my thoughts have been doing laps around it at an ever-increasing rate since i watched episode 2.07 ‘headspace’ if not before!
and all of this is why it’s so incredible to me that in the end, colin’s big moment comes from making assists and not goals! because on the one hand i understand the fandom desire for the colin post-coming out glowup that we all knew was coming—to see him, like, ~prove everybody wrong about him~ and inspire people by suddenly becoming a standout player and scoring goals left and right, even though that never used to be his role on the team before. and don’t get me wrong, i was 100% on board that train, and would have loved it for him if that was how it went down in the end, also. i think he should get to score here and there! as a treat! especially now that richmond are playing total football and there’s been so much emphasis placed on how it’s not just jamie/dani/occasionally sam who are making all the goals anymore!
but i don’t know! especially after the events of the last few episodes, there’s something very special to me about getting to see a colin who, rather than becoming someone entirely new in the moments right after coming out, just feels free to become, and be at peace with, the best version of the same self he’s always been. he’s still a team player first and foremost, but now that he’s not as weighed down by the need to chameleon/hide/pretend to be someone he’s not, he’s so much better at it. and everyone sees this! he gets to be celebrated for his contributions within the role he’s always played! he (and everybody else!) finally recognizes the value that he adds to the team just by being himself—fully himself! it resolves all the tension and insecurity that we’ve seen him struggling with this whole time, on every level. and so this moment was genuinely the perfect ending for his journey in my opinion—i’m so so happy that we were tall enough to join him on the ride here, and so excited to see what he does going forward these last few episodes now that some of that pressure is off him <3

nimona thoughts! still my top movie of the year so far!!
been thinking about how to frame my thoughts on this gem, and I ultimately arrived at a bit of a pretentious jumping-off point. but honestly, my favorite stories are always the ones that end up demoting the whats, the hows, and sometimes even the whos in service of the whys. it's the hardest question and context to tackle in any story, and it's worth interrogating the most in order to find any true meaning, any connection at all to what's told.
nimona shows exactly why walling yourself away from the "others" isn't good enough. it shows why you have to do the work and see them.
not just that it is dogmatically "the right thing to do". not just depicting what certain systemic injustices are, how they are deployed, and who they are targeted at. but the why. that simplest, purest shape of questioning an injustice dating back to your gentlest time as a child, when you were vulnerable, naive, and truly curious in the best possible faith. the question you would always ask was why.
you are picking up a sword to threaten the unknown. you've been told the whos and whats. you parse it thus. but you don't know the why. you are watching this happen on TV, contextualized, simplified, dramatized. you are connecting the dots. understanding the why.
nimona painstakingly drills down on that why. arduously, achingly digging past the institutions of fear fed by cycles of indoctrination and right down to the core of it. packaged in a simple-to-parse fantasy world built with deft, elegant metaphors and archetypes that immediately fall into place and make sense to a person of any age.
it is animation as a medium and fantasy as a genre both working in concert. a fun and colorful romp that ends on a gentle embrace of reassurance that tells children - both literal and the ones buried deep inside adults - that their first question to the world was always the correct one. because it was the kindest.

not about poetry but i don't trust people who go online spewing vague declarations of "in order to write you need to understand Form And Structure!!!!" because there's prose fuckheads who do the same thing where they just vaguely say you need to understand Structure before you write a novel, but by structure they usually just mean the three act structure and the hero's journey and they've never studied or considered how structure can function beyond that, especially in non-western/non-english writing theories. the minute someone is like ohhhh but the Structure.....in a vague manner like that i'm like okay so you don't actually know structure because if you had deeply studied structure in writing theory as you claim to have done, you would know how complex and fluid and varied and malleable it is and it's not just one thing you Learn How To Do like putting a table together. and it's not something you will one day know perfectly because you will, ideally, encounter new ideas to structure a story as you expand your reading and your own writing. anyway i'm done for now i'm logging off to read more filthy animals by brandon taylor, potluck was such a good short story collection opener. i'm excited to see how he links these stories into a structured collection. i'm excited to read family meal by bryan washington when i'm done because he did a lot of fun things with really short + really long chapters in memorial and i learnt a lot about structure and pacing from there.

I was talking to Curtis about how certain aspects of Doctor Who would be treated if they were episodes of Torchwood and/or had that rating leniency of Torchwood (imo the limitations of Doctor Who make for better TV than Torchwood in general, but not always) and when I brought up Amy's Choice, Curtis said I should do an episode rewrite and.
Hm. Hmmm. That could be really interesting. Amy and Rory and the Doctor's dynamic would be so... different in a Torchwood rated show, given the things they do with them in Doctor Who, and if they actually used the Dream Lord as an interesting villain (and they'd actually be able to play into the Doctor's worst traits in an adult show! For better and for worse!)...
However I'd have to actually rewatch Amy's Choice, and also decide how much I want to stay faithful to the episode, how much I want to stay faithful to "what would/could Torchwood have done here, and how much I actually want the result to be. Good.
Because "what Torchwood would do" and "what would be interesting" are not necessarily the same things.
(Accidentally wrote a Novel in the tags also. Whoops.)

5 episodes into Deadloch and this show is so much more fun when it isn't trying to pretend like it's not copaganda like genuinely a really fun mystery and executed super well and then the lib-ish politics of the show keep popping in like "hey fuck the gender binary" and "hey queer people don't murder, we get murdered" and "hey our lead is a lesbian cop" and it's like shut the fuck up already my god. like you're bringing up all these issues you're clearly not gonna fucking reckon with because you can't by the nature of the show unless this ends with cops getting abolished in australia so like what are you doing here, you know? like in the first few minutes of episode 1, the lead lesbian cop finds ACAB spray painted on her neighbor's garbage cans and we just haven't gone anywhere with that, it's not like used to critique the system or anything, and her response is just to get it cleaned up. so like. it's just kinda infuriating.

I hope izzy continues to be a selfish fucked up masochistic mean freak in s2 of ofmd btw. like obviously I enjoy a good domesticated izzy as much as the next guy but I truly do not want them to go immediately into a soft uwu baby arc I desperately need more content of him being messy and violent and jagged thank you <3
I may draw and engage with a lot of silly and fluffy content about him but I can’t forget the fact that the scene that really made me interested in him was the toe scene. like that was the hook for me!! I genuinely want to see more crazy shit like that from him!!! like I do enjoy him when he’s complicated and bad actually hope this helps :)

INSANE that this is the first porky movie since the groovy goolies one. which i assume is porky focused because he’s in the title. Sure bugs replaced him as The mascot but still yknow???? Yknow??????
Anyways im SO excited for this movie i PRAY it comes out
I KNOWWWWWWWWWW HE DESERVES IT!! GOD all of what i’m about to say is nothing you lovely people haven’t heard before because i have terminal I Love To Repeat Myself disease, but it is legitimately soooooooooo so so heartbreaking how slept on and under discussed of a character he is. have said it a million times but despite Daffy barely squeaking by as my #1 favorite i talk about Porky SO MUCH because the gospel of the pig needs to get out there! i truly think he’s one of the funniest and most sincere and most versatile characters the studio has to offer and very enigmatic and it’s really really sad that he barely gets any recognition outside of “the guy who stutters” or “the that’s all folks guy” or “the boring pig” (NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
the Duck Dodgers TV series was originally intended to be a movie if i recall but they scrapped that and turned it into an actual series (and for the better i’d say), likewise deleted footage of Back in Action showed him having slightly more significance (but not by much.) i sincerely hope that with this upcoming movie—and LTC as a whole—that it inspires people to look into both his cartoons and the Porky and Daffy dynamic more as a whole because i think it too is a dynamic that is incredibly slept on
part of why i’m so crazy about Porky and/or Porky/Daffy cartoons is the NOVELTY of it all—again, have said this all before but growing up in an era dominated by the Jones and Freleng interpretations of the characters i never knew that LT shorts used to be in black and white or that Porky used to be so popular or that Porky and Daffy were THE duo that represented the studio for a good number of years. and i’m definitely a person who flocks to novelty more than something that’s more polished, so discovering this whole branch of cartoons that have Porky and Daffy killing each other or being besties or whatever else have you just felt like an entire treasure trove! because all i had known were typical pair ups like Bugs and Daffy or Bugs and Elmer or Bugs and Yosemite Sam and all that. and it helps that the Porky and Daffy shorts are so unique through their versatility too, there’s an overlying theme with them all but they are both characters who aren’t nearly as bound to formula as the others and there’s more room for experimentation which is something that really interests me more personally as well.
BUT BACK TO PORKY. YES. he is done so dirty and not given the time of day and it’s just absolutely absurd!!! i truly think he’s one of the funniest characters the studio has to offer and he has way more personality outside of just stuttering or looking cute or reacting to characters funnier than him (to paraphrase Tiny Toons), and i really hope that this movie allows people to see him in a new light and get more curious about him. likewise with the Porky and Daffy dynamic, with it being a feature i’m hoping that it’ll be able to explore and hit some nuances that maybe the regular series doesn’t hit all the time (as i do think there is a more strong sense of formula to a bit of an inhibition in the LTC Porky and Daffys rather than what their classic counterparts offered) or don’t have the time/opportunity TO hit
and even if none of this Worldwide Porky Enlightenment that i’m fantasizing about happens i’ll still be happy. LTC’s Porky and Daffy dynamic isn’t perfect by any means and has a lot of vices it can get itself into, but regardless i am so fortunate and excited for this movie and seriously hope it sees the light of day; to appease crazed pig and duck fanatics such as myself, but to also showcase everyone’s hard work and talent. there’s a lot of incredible talent on this film and i truly hope they get the credit and satisfaction and fulfillment that they deserve to the fullest extent
