in an alternate universe where science funding is stable and abundant regardless of monetary gain we have already gotten to the complex root of which lichens enjoy signs but only the letters or only the sign and what about the letters or sign they prefer and this haunts me

Any advice on applying glaze?

I just got a bunch of my stuff back from bisque firing and I'm really nervous about the glazing. I have that kind of liquid glaze you can get in jars, I'll probably mostly do transparent glazes but also the colorful ones. I'm really scared of messing up my pieces.

I have a few pointers!

keep in mind, though lots of things can go wrong in the glaze firing, the bisque firing is where things explode! I personally find the glaze kiln slightly less terrifying (but there’s more anticipation)

since your glaze is going to be painted on and not dipped, be sure to follow the directions on the jar. it should tell you how many coats to apply (usually 3, but I think up to six if you’re layering different glazes). wait for them to dry before applying the next coat

it usually only happens on dipped pieces in my experience but sometimes when you dip a piece there’s little pinholes in the wet glaze. don’t touch it until it’s fully dry, but once it is, you can just gently rub your fingertips over the pinholes and they should smooth out

if any of your glazes are super thick, you can add a little water, and if they dry up completely, you can do the same thing to reconstitute them. just violently shake the jar between waiting for the underglaze to absorb the water lol

leave the bottom of your pieces unglazed, as well as an 1/8” up from the foot so it won’t drip or stick to the kiln shelf. I was taught not to apply glaze really thick on the lowest third of your piece, to help prevent drips

and this is the time to learn a good and also difficult pottery lesson:

don’t get attached

things are going to go wrong and some pieces will be disappointing or unusable. (conversely, some pieces you felt ‘meh’ about might end up being your favourites!)

but you can’t get too attached or it’s gonna hurt to open the kiln. it’s always exciting/scary to fire pottery, but if you put your heart in the kiln with your pieces… 🥲 just don’t do it. people tend to figure it out after a couple firings and most potters I’ve met agree that an unfired piece isn’t something to put your hopes in

i saw a post floating around about purity culture and didn't necessarily agree with some of the wording of it, but it got me thinking especially with the way things have been lately. if an author can write an antagonist or create a whole culture of how things are acceptable, why can't roleplayers? genuinely, it makes me wonder how double standard things can be here. a fave author writes something and an eye isn't bat. a roleplayer explores that world and people want to grab pitchforks and bully people into leaving. realistically, most roleplayers will discuss and ask if you're okay with writing canon aspects or would have read your guidelines to ensure they're not touching uncomfortable territory. it's actually kinda exhausting that other roleplayers will try and tell you that you can't write xyz or that you have to write certain things with care and i'm over here just ... but the author that you so adore the world of their creation that you choose to engage and be a part said creation didn't handle anything with care. but anywho, just a reminder that you can just block what you don't wanna see without vagueing and harassing others. i promise you out of sight, out of mind works miracles.

honestly I really love imagining Charles Bingley and Fanny Price finding their way to becoming friends cause I think they would have a lot of (largely unspoken, but present) support to offer each other re: dealing with coercive and controlling family members

i know i said i was happy about how mel's story went, but the more i think about it the less i'm sure about that. this is very much connected to how the themes of classism and wealth disappeared in s2, but mel in the beginning was the epitome of piltover. she wanted to advance piltover to prove herself to her mother. to "put piltover—" and by extension herself, "—on the map."

she wanted wealth just to have it. and i'm not blaming her for anything that happened, especially with hextech! she, just like jayce and viktor, could not have known what it would lead to. i mean yeah heimerdinger said so but who the hell listens to heimerdinger? but anyway i think mel changed throughout s1, much in thanks to jayce. by the end she's become more cognisant of the mistreatment of zaunites. she's the first to vote for their peace. she was a good person all along but now she knows how to act on it. it's also seen more in s2 act 1. when she covers her painting with gold, it's symbolic—she won't act according to what her mother might think. she won't let her desire for approval dictate her anymore.

so somehow i wish those themes were. continued, somehow? like again they were dropped not just with mel but the whole show and it makes her story a off to me. there's no meaningful commentary on war or classism or how her ideology stands opposite to her mother's. like some people have said, it feels like she doesn't have much agency, even if she is really cool. and that to me is a shame because agency felt like her thing. "to shape your own destiny" as she says to jayce in s1. i know her collaborating with the black rose (but not fully joining them) and learning magic is supposed to represent becoming independent from her mother, taking her own path, but some other aspects of her character were thrown away... the more i think about it the more i'm thinking they kind of #girlboss-ed her a little bit. maybe to sell another champion. i can't help but feel like even though i enjoyed seeing her on screen, the payoff didn't feel proportionally satisfying compared to her setup in s1.
