Would be curious to hear more of your thoughts on the James-Matthew-Cordelia "love triangle" situation sometime. Personally I've always viewed most if not all of CC's love triangles and "love triangles" as narrative dialogues and I'm sure this is happening in some way, shape, or form with the not-exactly-an-actual-love-triangle-really situation in TLH but I've never exactly been able to figure out what it's a conversation about.

Okay so I think I've talked about this a little bit before but I haven't really gone into detail about why the TLH "love triangle" doesn't fall under the actual love triangle category.

In a MFM love triangle a woman character is in the center between two men. Both men offer her something different to the central girl, and they each care for her, have their merits, and offer something different to her. She must explore both relationships and make a decision.

This is true enough of the Heronfairstairs "love triangle." Both James and Matthew are wonderful people and have a lot to offer.

However, a love triangle necessitates that the character be torn between her feelings for the two characters. Cordelia has loved James since she was 13/14 years old. This is information that we glean at the beginning of Chain of Gold. From her first appearance until her last, Cordelia's romantic affections belong wholly to James.

This is fact #1: Cordelia made her choice long before the series began. It was always made clear to the readers that Herondaisy was the endgame. The entire romantic plotline in TLH works up to their remaining married, and in love, until the stars burn out.

Now, we have fact #2: Matthew knows this. From the beginning, Matthew knows that he is not actually going to live out an idyllic HEA with Cordelia. He knows that she loves James; he says as much in Chain of Iron, when he drops in through Cordelia's window. This admission not only demonstrates that Matthew is aware of his position in their dynamic but also that he has the ability to observe the feelings of those around him and draw correct conclusions on his own.

Fact #3: Matthew is insanely self-destructive, and in Anna's words he 'seems to prefer a helpless love.' Self-destructive tendencies are a core part of Matthew's character, and they do not begin and end with alcoholism. Even before picking up drinking, Matthew was calling himself 'a waste of space in a waistcoat' in Cast Long Shadows. His using romance as a method of self-destructing should come as no surprise, but this was also set up really well even before TLH started. The entire point of Matthew's crush on Lucie was to exemplify that he preferred a hopeless love.

And what's more hopeless - and more painful - than loving your best friend's wife? Nothing.

I will say that I do not think that this is the only reason Matthew loves Cordelia. I think that, as Thomas says, it is not so much romantic love as it is a sense of absolution - Cordelia is the outsider that does not know Matthew, so he shared his secret with her, which caused him to bond/imprint on her. But also... we'd be remiss not to note that Cordelia is wonderful. She's brave, big-hearted, and an extremely warm person; she's funny and bright and bold. She is a good friend to Matthew. I just felt the need to say that to be fair to Cordelia too.

Now, we move onto fact #4. James and Cordelia had their own main romantic plotline as well. And it's good. Here are some things about James and Cordelia that are all unequivocally true:

They have loved each other since they were children.

James was able to break a Prince of Hell's enchantment because of just how much he loved Cordelia.

Cordelia and James were a real actual married couple from the second Cordelia set foot into 48 Curzon Street. Like, I am sorry, but that was never a fake marriage even when they were clowning.

James and Cordelia have exuded massive soulmate energy from moment one. Neither of them have ever wanted anyone else.

Which brings us to Matthew. Matthew, who prefers a hopeless love. Matthew, who knows at least subconsciously that nothing would be more hopeless or painful than falling in love with his parabatai's extremely obvious soulmate.

This is why I believe Cassie chose to make these plotlines intersect. It is a testament to the strength of James and Cordelia's bond, but it is also a very good way to showcase just how bad Matthew's self destructive tendencies are since it's obvious how much he loves James.

We do not have the makings of a love triangle. We have the makings of two intersecting plotlines:

A Big Soulmate Energy love story that all Hell's power can't extinguish, and

The story of a boy with horrible mental health that massively self-destructs in the worst possible way.

And it hits.

Because fact #5 is that Cordelia and Matthew's 'escape' to Paris is just that - rampant, unrealistic escapism.

Did anyone reading TLH ever think that Matthew stood a chance? Did Matthew ever think that Matthew stood a chance? The answer to the former question should be NO assuming the audience has media literacy. The answer to the latter is no as well - at least not until Paris.

Matthew goes to Paris extremely impulsively. He plans on going alone. I like this because it sets him up as someone who loves travel. It makes his choice to go on a Voyage post-ChoT very satisfying, and it's good character-building/foreshadowing. But it also shows that he was not in a good mental place and needed to escape from London, escape from JamesandCordelia because there are no spaces between their names in his eyes or anyone else's anymore.

Cordelia goes to Paris because she is forced to wedge spaces between their names. James and Cordelia must be seperate again. She's also grieving her dad who died like 2 weeks ago maximum.

Both Cordelia and Matthew use Paris - and each other - as a means of running away from their problems. They pretend to be different people with no issues and have a good time. But it isn't real.

JamesandCordelia is real, and James's appearance in Paris and Cordelia's departure because of his drinking ultimately is Matthew's rock bottom as he realizes that JamesandCordelia are meant to be.

This is not a love triangle. These are two plotlines that hit each other in all the right places and force all three characters to grow and confront their needs to escape and avoid their feelings.

I think that this is why it's genius. It's complex, but it's also devastatingly simple: Herondaisy's love was so strong that Matthew used it as a vehicle for hurting himself over and over.

And this is why Matthew's leaving London at the end of ChoT is so satisfying as well. In London, he is likely to get sucked back into old habits; watching JamesandCordelia build what promises to be a beautiful life would be to engage in self-harm again. Leaving is Matthew actively choosing to take care of himself, to find a path where he can love himself and find another love that is not hopeless.

In the end, the Heronfairstairs "love triangle" is the manifestation and exemplification of Matthew Fairchild's mental health journey. It's not really part of JamesandCordelia's journey at all.

And I think that's what a lot of people fail to see about it, and that's why people get frustrated. They fundamentally have misinterpreted the purpose as "romantic drama" when it's not a romantic story at all. Essentially people are looking at a ripe orange and going "well that's the shittiest-looking apple I've ever seen," which as self-proclaimed #1 Matthew Fairchild Stan gets frustrating as hell.

And yes 2021 like u said prolly changed the trajectory of their lives forever not just copse but like monza, brazil, Jeddah. Whats so fascinating about Max and Lewis is that for such enormously talented drivers they simply cannot let each other race normal. They leave each other more space and will still fumble because they want to pass so bad. As u put it, its distrust, but its also just racing. F1 drivers are so insane. Anyway I think Max still feels some type of way about all that. A job will have u 19 years old getting bullied by a 33 year old that refuses to say ur name. Max pissed everybody off those days. He just wanted to do the lil debrief and the old heads truly did not give a fuck they were so mean to him. Lewis went thru a divorce too so this was all wrong person wrong place wrong time wrong car wrong team wrong wrong wrong. All wrong.

They were doomed from the start like they were set on a collision course since Max was born that was as inevitable as he is. And the noise around them has always been too loud. LEGEND OF FEI [2020] Gotta start with the obvious, because I'll recommend this drama forever even to everyone who has started and can't get into it, I'll always be like, please try again lol It's feminist, fun, feel-good but with very nicely done heavy moments every few episodes, important messages about life and about becoming who you want to be, it has my, at this point, favorite cdrama ship ever, yunfei my beloved!! relationship goals! friendships, funny dynamics, siblings, AMAZING characters and...so much more, I won't continue because I'll never stop lmao

UNEXPECTED [2018] Such an underrated Drama! I don't know why it's so underrated, especially because it's made by the same writer as a very popular drama (The Romance of Tiger and Rose) and the stories are very similar, which I know can be boring but they also have differences that make each drama unique, there's just the same premise of a writer traveling into their own story.

I'VE FALLEN FOR YOU [2020] The perfect rom-com historical drama, with a very fun plot and with plot twists you don't expect, such good characters and two amazing ships! Comfort drama for sure!

THE LOVE BY HYPNOTIC [2019] If you love palace romance, arranged marriage turned true love, a few crazy (but very entertaining) villains and a love story for the ages! Even though it has some very heavy moments, it's one of my comfort dramas as well, because it also includes some VERY FUNNY moments, like I just love dramas that can somehow balance comedy, romance and serious moments so well!

THE QUEEN OF ATTACK [2021] There's so many short dramas nowadays and 80% of them have the same plot of someone traveling into a story lol and yes, this is one of them BUT it's such a good drama like it's insane, I'll wish forever it was a normal length one, but it's still so good, the episodes are 9-10 mins each but there are two seasons, and the episodes have been combined, so eventually it's like having a normal drama with 12 normal length episodes (6 for s1 and 6 for s2). It's so worth it and the two actors are so talented and have such good chemistry, plus the story is unique too, yes this premise has been done many times but I think they still made it so unique and different from others.

THE STARRY LOVE [2023] A recent drama and quite popular, but I'll still recommend it always. Other than the last episode that was a bit disappointing and rushed (still a happy-ish ending though), it's my favorite Xianxia and it was just so good, the story, the cinematography, THE OST, the actors, the ships, the friendships, the sisters, ALL THE WOMEN, youqin literally making all other MLs take notes from him on how to be the best ml out there, so many reasons to watch this drama, just ignore the last part and pretend we saw what they forgot to show us lol

LOVE LIKE THE GALAXY [2022] Where do I even begin??? (This is the first Zhao Lusi drama i recommend in this list, but I just wanna mention, I recommend almost all of them.) Anyway, LLTG is by far my favorite political drama, and non wuxia/xianxia historical cdrama. It's so different and unique, there's literally nothing like it. It's a slow paced drama, with very long scenes (you might only have 3-4 scenes in one episode for example) and it's the reason why It got me a while to get to it, but now I'M SO IN LOVE WITH IT!!! There is not an episode I don't enjoy, it's pure art. Cheng Shao Shang is one of my favorite girls ever and her and Ling Buyi???? I'D DIE FOR THEIR LOVE. Their chemistry is so so so good, now Zhao Lusi can have chemistry with a tree, it's true but still, one of the best cdrama ships out there. Even though I never truly watched classic cdramas like Nirvana on Fire and those "older" ones, I think LLTG somehow is the closest to those except it also loves its characters and focuses on romance more than any older political cdrama did but it works so so well.

LIGHTER AND PRINCESS [2022] Favorite modern drama! I gotta be honest I'm not verrrryyyy into modern cdramas, I like a few, even love some, but generally it's hard to find a modern cdrama I'll go crazy over...but L&P changed that. Or well, it's still hard, maybe even harder now, to find something that tops it, but L&P is just so so good. Again, a quite popular drama, maybe it doesn't need the recommendation, but I have to mention it anyway 'cause it's my baby and I just cannot make a favorite cdramas list without it! Some reasons to watch: One of the best love stories out there, with such good angst and just everything you need on a ship, two main characters so unique that you'll definitely relate to (at least in some aspects), one of the best OSTS ever, perfect cinematography, directing and writing and one of my favorite endings on any show ever!

My best friend was the one to get me into Haikyuu and the first character I actually loved was Nishinoya, but when this himbo ball of light came on screen my heart was like “him, that’s our boy”

Riding that jjk train still it’s actually really funny because I actually hated Gojo when I first watched season 1, I found him to be arrogant and annoying, and then I read the manga and I realized that the reason I hate him was not really because he’s arrogant and annoying (which he is) but it’s because I saw myself in him (tragic I know) and then especially after I read Hidden Inventory arc my entire perspective changed and I realized he’s actually a character I treasure very much and I love him

5) Zoro and Sanji (another package deal sorry)

Now hear me out right I am like 0.000001% of the way through one piece (I’m on like episode 140) but the way these characters have stolen my heart is insane, and do I happen to also simp for both of them?? Yes, but the point is that their actual characters are so amazing to me and I know there’s still more of Sanjis backstory that I haven’t really seen and it’s most likely going to break me but I just have such a love for them and their dynamic so I’m gonna say they’re top five for me; the way that Zoro is so dedicated and loyal is something I find to be an incredible aspect of him (not to mention his talents as a swordsman), and Sanji cares so deeply for people and is such a caretaker and the fact that he is able to fight using only his legs is also incredible to me

Little Women - 7/10

Let’s address the elephant in the room. Why the FUCK is this show pretending that it is in any way inspired by the Louisa May Alcott book? lmfao. Yes there are sisters, the youngest of whom is an artist. And there is a wealthy great aunt. But like, the actual plot or themes? LMAO NO. My only explanation is that the showrunner, like me, was devastated as a child that Laurie and Jo did not end up together so they created this Little Women AU fanfic of a show so that their version of Laurie and Jo could get together.

It’s really funny imagining someone hearing about this show and tuning in and expecting a warm family drama and then getting... this. Secret societies. Financial crimes. Murder. Not exactly the kind of thing the March sisters got up to!

As I mentioned earlier the shows version of Jo, Oh In-kyeong, does end up with the show’s version of Laurie, Ha Jong-ho. But that relationship is just kinda... there? I was actually a lot more invested in the relationship between Oh In-joo, the shows version of Meg, and Choi Do-il - a character that really has no book counterpart. Their relationship was more interesting to me because it was way more complicated as Do-il’s allegiance was often unclear.

But who cares about the romantic relationships because the heart of the show is really the relationships between the sisters, which is I guess true to the spirit of Little Women. The two eldest sisters are fiercely protective of the baby of the family, Oh In-hye (the Amy character) and In-hye feels smothered by their affection and guilty because of the sacrifices they make for her. So there’s that dynamic and then there’s also the conflict between the older two sisters that stem from the fact that In-kyeong has a really firm sense of justice and right vs wrong whereas In-joo can see more shades of grey in the world. In-kyeong spent a chunk of her childhood and adolescence living with their wealthy great aunt while In-joo remained with their impoverished parents. Experiencing that level of poverty without reprieve has really shaped how In-joo views the world because she has seen the ways in which her life could have been so much better if her family just had a little bit more money.

The antagonists of the show are an insanely wealthy couple who are the parents of In-hye’s best friend. Their relentless pursuit of money and power and the lengths they go to attain it are the driving force behind their actions (plus like... an added bonus of the wife being legitimately unhinged) and it’s really fun watching the sisters go up against them. These girls who came from nothing, trying to take down such powerful people makes for a compelling show.

Overall, a solid drama, if you can forget that it’s supposed to be inspired by the classic book. At times it can be hard to really follow all the conspiracies and crimes, but the show does an admirable job of tying it all together in a satisfying way in the final two episodes.

ok so i finally watched zendaya's freaky tennis threesome flick and honestly i have a lot to say. first of all;

patrick: i think patrick is the best character. to me he was the only one who was consistently honest and real throughout the entire film. i also found that despite art and tashi accusing him of being childish I found him to be exceptionally advanced. In fact i think it's why both art and tashi gravitated towards him. for art, i think he sees someone he aspires to be as both a man and an athlete. for tashi i think it's something somewhere in between balance, competition and control. athletically tashi knows that patrick is just as good if not better than she is, but she's so competitive she can't accept that and that's why she tries to convince him to let her coach him and that's where the control comes into play. but even in their toxic dynamic, you can tell that tashi really prefers patrick's persona because he's the only one bold enough to challenge her and that's where things begin to balance out. for both tashi and art, it's evident that patrick is an essential part of life if either expects to grow. it's funny that they both hated him for that.

art: i think art was the most pathetic of the three. before tashi even walked on the scene, he wanted patrick to let him win. and to me that's embarrassing- not just in the vain of sportsmanship but in character too. unlike tashi and patrick, i also don't think art ever wanted to be involved with tennis long term. it was obvious early on when he showed little interest in networking. it wasn't until patrick convinced him to meet tashi that he started to step up his game. and i thought that was really pathetic too. i think everyone knew that he was playing for tashi, and that's why he and tashi inevitably had such a strain on their relationship. he wasn't playing for himself or because he wanted to be the best. he was playing just to get the girl. he was playing just to impress the girl. and what's more he didn't just play but he psychologically manipulated. i honestly think if he hadn't gotten in the middle of tashi and patrick's relationship they would've stayed together. i also think there would've been a slimmer chance of tashi experiencing a sports injury which is why she didn't want patrick to disclose anything about their relationship. an athlete is only as good as their mentality and she knew that. they all knew that. and i think art is a dick for exploiting that.

tashi: toxic as hell! but also not surprising at all for a major athlete. overall, i do have mixed feelings about tashi...she loses points for me, because of how she handled the art situation. i think if she still had feelings for patrick she shouldn't have married him, but i lowkey think that all her scheming came down to killing two birds with one stone. being with art is her psycho-schematic way of controlling patrick. and punishing art by forcing him to play and using their relationship as a wager is just her way of getting back on art because as soon as their relationship took off, she must've been able to tell that art wasn't like she and patrick. he wasn't an athlete. art was only good because she made him good. art was only good because he wanted to impress her. and so much of their relationship must've been about art feeling like he won over patrick. people are sensitive to stuff like that. in all honesty, i probably would've done the same. i'm mental like that lol. but it wasn't cool. i also think her appetite for control is insane. like very psycho manipulative. she's the type that always has to be on top. and it's so obvious that when she and patrick had their first intimate scene together i snorted louder than the ass cheeks of a fry cook. everything she does is for power. and so for that reason i find her to be the least trust worthy. i was also super confused about her bid for art in the final act. i think she betrayed art and herself by meeting patrick. i wasn't sure how to feel about it. because even though she showed up pretending like she again still had control over the entire situation, you could tell that she still wanted to be with patrick. and that just made me sad all over again.

the threesome: idk. i didn't really get a gay vibe from patrick and art. definitely queer but not full on gay. i didn't even get a bisexual vibe! i kind of think if that was the take that i was supposed to get, there should've been more mm gazing, but tashi was always in the middle of that. so who knows. i will say though, between the two, i think art was more queer or sexually fluid. and i think a lot of that has to do with his deep connection and fascination with patrick. to me, i feel like art's the kind of guy to go out of his way to perform his masculinity, whereas patrick is just naturally male. to the point that even if he did have a relationship with art, he would always assume the top position. art gives major bottom vibes ngl.

overall: 7/10. i have nightmares now and i wake up in the middle of the night screaming I AM NOT ART DONALDSON.

hello laurie!! <3 insane commute nonnie here (again) omg i read oby yesterday omw to class (ended up staying at my friend's again bc his roommate was still out. sadly he's back) and i should not have done that bc OMG?? BABE I WAS LITERALLY THINKING ABT THEM THE WHOLE TIME UT GOT SO BAD I SAW MY PROFESSOR (he doesn't even look like james. he's just fit in a 'Hear me out guys...' way)N BLUSHED I WAS ACTUALLY GIGGLING AT RANDOM TIMES THINKING ABT THEM also like. sirius n regulus in this😭😭 regulus cursing sirius out for being a good brother is so real to me as someone with 12 year older brother bc he spent my entire childhood terrorizing me n now he's the sweetest person Ever. not even in an evil way he's just genuinely nice to me so if i ever complain abt him everyone goes ??? YOUR brother??? its so annoying (i love him). just reg veing grumpy<3 he's my fav little purse man and ok oh god never thought i'd say this. i have NEVER gotten the whole daddy thing but now im just🧍‍♂️bc i need to call james potter daddy while he fucks me what who said that also like. extreme apologies for how extremely inappropriate this might've gotten i was up all night studying for a quiz we have today (cannot catch a break w these ppl istg) n i swear my brain refuses to function and i have no idea!!! sirius and reg in oby are !! so important to me !! i feel like they have the best relationship in all of my fics, bc they're on good terms on nothing happens too but they argue . a lot . and they're gonna have some issues down the line. and they're also very close in the boxer au but there's still gonna be a lot of angst regarding their relationship. in oby, tho, they're just brothers <3 they love each other so much <3 and i'm so glad i'm portraying their dynamic accurately bc a lot of their convos are based on stuff me and my sisters have talked/fought about lmao
