I'm sincerely very happy for anyone who is enjoying the show but every time I see takes that the show has improved the book characterizations or that the book characters are underdeveloped in comparison to the show...
#our experiences are very different lmao#pjo show crit#sure the show isn't completely out yet#but id argue that the characters (namely the trio) seem way more developed and well-rounded in the book by this point in time (episode 4)#and look im not saying every change the show has made is bad#but by and far there has yet to be a change to characterization that feels like an IMPROVEMENT from the source material lmao#the closest contender I'd say is show Percy does seem a tad angrier than book Percy#but again I wouldn't call that an improvement... its just different and I think that /change/ works because it feels like the same essence#but even that has had some issues because I feel like the show has inadvertently cut down some of Percy's canon book empathy here and there#I think the show has nailed Annabeth's pride and intelligence and her warped worship of her mother#... but they've also made her hyper competent to the point that she's not making half of the mistakes she did in the book#which ISNT good because book annabeth is smart but she isn't infallible#its a big point that she has the theoretical intelligence but none of the real world experience/application#she gets tricked by medusa and goes to visit the Arch just cause she loves architecture and that's okay!! she's twelve and a nerd!#I also dont like that they've cut/toned down her little crush on Luke#actually they've not even showcased the familial bond between annabeth and Luke either in the show so like lmao#and then grover#by now grover's fear of failure and repeating this past mistakes and wanting a license has already been acknowledged in the books at least#in the show?? not so much#and his canon book suspicions and wariness of medusa... were given to annabeth#like medusa in the book was Grover's moment to shine cause his instincts were right!#and in the book fight he even very intentionally attacked medusa#but his highlights there were cut completely in the show#and finally sally#...idk who that is in the show but that's NOT my sally jackson#percy jackson#mine

Tumblr just completely ate an hour's worth of posts that I was finishing up front my drafts!!! What the fuck!!!
...Anyone know a way to potentially retrieve them? I finished them in drafts and hit "add to queue" and then FOOLISHLY ASSUMED they were added and so deleted the un-modified/unfinished versions in my drafts. Foolishly!

why are you, as an adult in 2024, still hung up on reylo. why are you still mocking the shippers. why do you believe yourself to be superior only because you dislike a stupid ship from a fucking space fairytale. girl (gnc) get a grip
#it's ridiculous. this ship is... stupidly cliché. like if you know fandoms at all#you could easily guess why people would be into it. hello?? have you tried to watch tfa without your hate-on-kyle-ron goggles?#did you watch their scenes together? you don't have to like something to recognize the hints#hell. at the time i didn't really like jonerys but i realized they were going to be a thing when i read agot in 2011#like folks. it's been nearly TEN LONG YEARS. let it go. LET IT FUCKING GOOOO#and for the lucy/cooper shippers out there who think reylos are (again) delusional when they compare the two ships:#no. *you* are being delusional only because you think reylo is unsexy and uncool (which is your right to think btw. obv)#if you can't see why someone would like both of these pairings for similar reasons... idk what to say honestly#people compared it to hannigram... honestly. again i see why they would appeal to anyone who's into both ships#i really do. but... unpopular opinion (since i'm more of a clannibal fan than i could ever be of reylo):#they are more similar to reylo than will/hannibal. there i said it#i'm not talking about the writing (admittedly the quality of it was questionable). i'm talking about tropes#never mind that imo the ghoul is more akin to vader than kylo but whatever#hannibal is an unapologetic kind of villain. he's not gonna have a redemption arc and that's okay#cooper is an antivillain who used to be a good man and became a disfigured cruel bastard. a parody of himself#lucy is him. him before the bombs dropped before he discovered the person he trusted the most wanted to commit genocide#nice. moral. polite. infused with the Good Old American Values™. he's basically her dark side#all of this is very hannigram/clannibal. i'm not denying it at all#but what'll likely happen is that lucy's actions will have a positive influence on the ghoul and remind him of what it means to be a man#and that's way more reylo-like. sorry.#beauty&thebeast/villain with some hidden good in him+morally righteous heroine/enemies to lovers etc.#i mean. hello??..... having said that. i'm not so much of a reylo shipper anymore and tbh never was. i really liked it at the time#but i was never fond of the st era. my fav characters are vader and leia and revan from the old eu. just saying#*and* it's also not impossible lucy gets darker with the ghoul as her traveling companion. in fact i wouldn't dislike it at all#if done well i mean#but i would still like for people to be intellectually honest and less puerile. god knows i have my notps#but i really don't give a fuck about the shippers. good for them i guess? i have better taste lmao but that's heavily subjective#val rambles in the tags#val speaks#txt

can I ask what ur summer research was about?!!! :0 (u absolutely don't have to answer if ur not comfortable, I'm just a giant nerd and loves to hear about research dhdnfjdmdjfng)
Of course!!! I’d be glad to talk about it!!
Tumblr media
In short, my research over the summer was putting mice in mazes and looking at how well they remember mazes, how quickly they learn the maze, and how learning one maze can help them learn other mazes faster. More detailed under the read more!
Previous maze studies with mice have shown that mice can actually learn very quickly when they’re learning behaviors that are in line with their own evolutionary advantages rather than arbitrary associations. It’s the difference between telling a mouse “go around these tunnels and try to find water to survive” vs telling it “do these very specific and completely useless 5 things and then you’ll get water”. Maze navigation for mice is already a natural complex behavior: mice are burrowing rodents and already have the predisposition for running around tunnels. We set up a maze and cameras and infrared lights around it to record it doing its thing, so that we can look at its natural behaviors with no human interference.
The unique thing about this project is less the behavior and rapid learning of the mouse and more the maze that we use for the study, called the Manhattan Maze. I think my mentor created it but I’m not too certain? But the basic concept of it, as shown in the figure above, is that there are two boxes of parallel tunnels and one layer of acrylic in the middle. Through holes in the acrylic, the mouse can climb between the two layers and make a “turn”. Essentially, this maze is the most reconfigurable setup for studying mouse behavior in mazes possible, because the middle layer of acrylic, which we call a mask, can be changed 2^(n^2) ways (n being the number of channels in a layer) to make completely different mazes. For the figure above, a 4x4 Manhattan maze, we have 2^16 possible different configurations, but we were actually running it on an 11x11 maze, so there were 2^121 different possible configurations! This way, we can look at the mouse in tons of different mazes without actually having to make a new maze altogether and transfer the mouse every time.
And they learn extremely fast! The mazes we used were pretty much linear paths with small dead ends that weren’t far off from the main path, and required 9 turning decisions to get from starting point to end point. There were 3 of these different masks, and after training for one day on one of them, the next day, almost all mice that completed the training managed to learn completely new 9-decision masks in 3 hours or less!

tell me about drawtectives. what is this little show.
oooooh my god oh my god. they are my guys. so.
drawtectives itself is a youtube series created by julia lepetit on Drawfee. it's an rpg mystery show– s1 is a murder mystery, s2 is just a mystery– that doubles as an art challenges show. she draws all of the backgrounds and npcs and most of the assets (the 'cutscenes', you could call them) and then the team gets together, knowing absolutely nothing besides what julia's asked them to prepare, and does some funky improv to create a very funky storyline.
there are 3 players and one dm; the pcs are rosé, york, and grendan/grenda/grandma/gma, and the Big NPCs are Jancy True (s1/s2) and Eugene Finch (s2) and they're, in their own words, a found family, so. beloved. their backup plan if all their jobs fail is to move out east and open a bookstore. jancy and eugene have fully accepted their titles as mom/ancestral ghost and son despite meeting each other likely once before the drawtectives dragged them together. overall though if i had to summarize, it's a bunch of friends getting together, making a bunch of puns, appreciating julia's art, and laughing together. the vibes are 10/10 so loving. in writing the transcripts i've written (Karina laughs) (Nathan laughs) (All laugh) So Many Times it's just fun.
so there's three pcs. first one we meet is gyorik 'york' rogdul, who's a half-orc come to the city to learn about his mother's culture. he is the character we have by far the most lore for– if I compiled all the lore I had about the Northern Tribes and Wild Trains, I think the document would be multiple pages. he's also illiterate, which was an interesting decision for the english major of the group to make (in other words, York Will Not Be Illiterate For Season Three bc Y'all Cannot Read) and morally gray if you think about it too hard (he killed his own brother) but yknow he's hot so it's okay. they're all hot any crimes committed are okay. he's also aroace (confirmed by the player, which is!! vibes!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TELLING ME @axolotllee!)
rosé is the Human Rogue and the youngest of the party; her main trait in s1 was Millennial and she Dealt with that. she, in contrast with York, has so little lore we are scraping the barrel. she was a thief, then left everything about that life behind and changed her name to rosé when she went to work for jancy. she lied on her resumé. she knows how to sew; she's sewn Pockets of Holding on most of her clothing. she bonded with a stray cat that lived outside her last apartment. she's three credits short of graduating college. she's, in addition to being a drawtective, jancy's intern, and cried when jancy got her a cupcake. she won't tell her best friends when her birthday is or where she goes to school or what her last name is. that's all we know about her and i love her and she could probably kill someone as she has multiple knives on her person and does not use them. she's bright and funny and can be pretty dark but really does find the humor in it which is. wonderful.
so grendan highforge starts out as The Snobby Rich Boy which. already love the trope something Always Happens To Them if they're a pc. then through s1 they make an offhand comment about a character (faucon, whose name is pronounced 'falco') and how if her name was pronounced that way it'd be grenda. faucon asks how they feel about it. they are caught very off-guard by that and then ask to be called it for the next hour or so. then the next witness calls him gma, and then grandma, and then. yeah she realizes she's genderfluid. and he uses any pronouns and has a full beard and also wears a romper and loves dogs and the player is the Most Experienced TTRPG-er so through maybe using resources a bittt grandma is the most observant character of all of them. he's also a dog walker and a lightweight and does canonically have druidic magic though that was Not Touched On Much and showed up to their first day on the job slightly stoned (they did stop doing that though.) she carries around a box to make the height difference (york is 7'. grendan is 4'. rosé is 6'. you can see the formatting issue) slightly less difficult. she doesn't know how rhinos reproduce but has had a fascination with them since a police chief said one might've committed a crime. i think they could kill someone by talking too much but they don't actually have the strength or dex to do Jack Shit.
and jancy true is the head pi (a great many of the characters are puns and i love it so much) and is there to make sure things get done and clues don't get missed. she has a cochlear implant and uses a cane and solved s1 just by Reading The Paper and hearsay. she solved about half of s2 before Someone Stopped Her. she says hello children to the drawtectives and it is such a fond thing. eugene is. a guy who i love. julia started the show thinking he would be some mysterious character to join them and then made the wonderful improv decision– avoiding having to do npc-npc conversation– of saying 'yeah eugene is spinning a camera on its stand' and rosé just says so gleefully. 'guys. i think he's stupid.' and he became their son. his character is a lot of The Plot of s2 so i don't want to get into it too much but. jancy and eugene my beloved.
they're just. such a family. to quote nathan (grenda's Player) from the s2 talkback: "That's one of my favorite things about this show, is we came in with these vague ideas for characters, and just playing them with each other, they became friends and became better people as a result of knowing each other and solving mysteries. ... Like, we all kind of independently made our characters people that either were distant from their families or, you know, just had tenuous connections to other stuff, and so these are, like, the realest connections they have in their lives."
and then karina (rosé) about 10 seconds later: "Yeah, we love a found family where they bond over just being the worst."
god. them. they're chaotic and loud and feel very real to me. they have excitement and are pretty bad at social cues but they love each other and want to die together because they would hate too much to be separated. i could articulate this better but it's one in the morning and they mean a great deal to me.

Hey so Avatar Kyoshi can just physically manifest & take the wheel at any time? That feels kind of over powered??
Tumblr media
We’re just not gonna talk about how Kyoshi possessed Aang? 👀
Also feels like the avatar detection statues in Zuko’s ship got retconned already. Iroh asking how Zuko knows he’s on the right path to find the Avatar but neither of them acknowledge the avatar tracking statues that this adaptation spawned in. 😩 It was a little frustrating to watch. Either leave them in & acknowledge them or just leave them out.

As a Kandreil enjoyer and known Kandrew lover, I think it’s weird and embarrassing as hell when Kandreil/Kevin stans who’s least favorite pairing in it is Andreil try to frame them prioritizing each other more and more as the series goes on as somehow insidious or toxic. Like, you can dislike the direction For Sure and wish it was written differently, but be honest that it’s because of Kevin being your favorite (perfectly valid, I also react disproportionately when my favorite character is hurt by something narratively vs when it’s other chars even if I like/love them) and has nothing to do with *problematic messages about romance* (BAH!) or whatever you are trying to frame it as being the concern instead.

So I recently had a not-so-nice anon in my inbox asking why I write for desi readers when ‘barely anybody who is actually desi’ reads my works. I chose not to respond to their original ask because it has a few racist stereotypes, not to mention blatant insults.
First off, I’m sure that’s not true. I refuse to believe that on this enormous site with well over a million people there is not one desi who watched ATSV and fell in love with its characters, and wanted to see more of themselves in readers. I refuse to believe that because I know for a fact it’s not true; I’m moots with a few desi writers and let me tell you even if they don’t necessarily write fics targeted towards explicitly Indian readers, their works are still fantastic and yes, they read my desi fics. (vee silvia shoutout to u guys ily ❤️) And I’m sure that there are others, too. Maybe they don’t read my writing but I’m sure they’ve searched for a fic that has a protagonist that they can relate to, at least once.
That first part may not have made any sense but anyway — secondly, it is not my duty to have to write for everyone else. I can very well choose to write about my own culture and my own experiences if I want to. I write desi readers because in a way, ATSV helped me love my culture and my background. And now, I want to introduce other people to my experiences, and to my culture, because I think it’s beautiful. I personally LOVE reading fics with Latina (or any ethnicity at all) readers that highlight parts of their culture. I love reading about cultures that I previously wouldn’t know much about.
Anyway, to summarise this: fuck you anon I’m just gonna write more desi-centred fics 😊

Hiiii do you have any more writings or musings about None? I was in your writing tag the other night and they came up a couple times but I'm not sure if I should be picturing a miqo'te or some sort of service animal/familiar lol
Hello! That's so fair, my Odette writings do not offer a lot of description for them! They do have their own tag [HERE] although not much is in it, currently. Some of the screenshots I'm including here and the writings which you've already seen! I'm very sorry for how rambling this is but None is where a lot of alts and relationships spawn from! None is neither a miqo'te nor a service animal (though I think they'd give a huff at the title)! None is the saddest creature in the whole world, a widower, Odette's favorite lil guy, Gerry's estranged step-parent, and a Lalafell:
Tumblr media
A Lalafell ranger who makes their living guiding people through the Shroud. These days they are 'mostly' retired. They're well past their middle age and when they were younger they made a deal with sylphs. To be fleet-footed and quick and the best hunter. It came with some side effects:
Tumblr media
They wear a hat to cover the ears. It's a bit silly to have two sets and, frankly, None doesn't wanna talk about it. They are stoic, pragmatic, and a bit of a hermit when they can afford it. None is a widower, their late wife was an duskwight woman named Aloutte, who was a widow herself with a young child; Geraldine. None and Gerry were never close and in the wake of Aloutte's passing that distant only grew. None and Odette met at the Menphina temple she was raised at. The Sisters there offer grief counseling and when Aloutte first fell sick she made them go to make the transition easier. A child at the time, Odette was obsessed from the moment they met. A pale shadow trailing after them. Where None failed with Gerry, they bonded with Odette. After Aloutte's passing None returned to the temple to live long term, some grievers need more support than others, they and Odette spent a lot of time together. They very much fill a uncle/aunt role for Odette; a trusted advisor who isn't the adults who raised her. When Odette took her vows and started to travel it was None who traveled with her, taught her basic outdoors skills, bought her Beauty and taught her how to care for chocobos. When Odette has to leave her flock of karakul to travel it is None she calls to care for them. Also, while Aloutte's loss and the grief that follows is very important to None as a character I feel it is important to note they were the saddest creature in the whole world before they knew the warmth of Aloutte's embrace! Sometimes you're just born with a heavy heart, you know? Because of how important they are to Odette. Odile... fucking hates their guts. Oooh, she hates their guts so much!!! The feeling is mutual and Odile and None have come to blows a few times. Something they both keep from Odette; None because they don't want to make her worry, Odile because she'll use the information to drive a wedge at some point. None also features in Odette's WoL AU, they're an honorary scion and spend most of their time with the other off-screen members. They spend time with Krile and Tatatru discussing lalafell things and I like to imagine that F'lhaminn and None have a lot to talk about. This is... pretty long so I will stop here! But I hope this satisfies some curiosity about None and thank you SO MUCH for asking about them!
Tumblr media
#Answered#None#whooo boy this doesn't even touch on how#Iron's alt Lia is a former lover of Aloutte's and how Lia and None remain close to this day#and that Gerry is Lia's ward and one of her students#and that Gerry and Prudence have a toxic yuri onagain/off again relationship#and that Gerry is real envious of Odette because of Odette's relationship with both Lia and None (very different relationships mind)#and that Prudence and None get along just fine which also causes problems with Gerry and Prudence (Why isn't prudence on HER side)#(There are no sides)#(just two people lost in grief)#(but also gerry was the child (adult with Aloutte died and nearly an adult when None and Aloutte met and married but still)#but none was never going to be a parent and was never going to marry#but aloutte was a force of nature and you don't resist nature for long !!!#anyway hello I had a period of time where I was having people lie to me all the time (like about having cancer) and so I made#a bunch of alts to have my own complicated family dynamics so I didn't have to keep rewriting things when I learned people were awful#and then Iron and I went “Hey. We should entangled our characters stories so much.” and it's been very fun ever since LMAO#anyway woof sorry to keep rambling in the tags#but man now I'm starting to ship None/F'lhaminn.........#Also None was sort of a Prudence Rough Draft#isn't that insane???#that's why they have such similar coloring LMAO#but now they're very different aside from being :| and good at their jobs#okay i'm done now#sorry you stumbled into asking about one of my favorite alts that I never play :weeps:

i'm giving guadalajara too much shit but los pueblos negros (the black villages) are genuinely really freaking cool
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also! my first experience with them was through an andrea compton video, cause she is from one of these villages!!! for those who don't know her, andrea compton is one of the most belovedests spanish youtubers, one of the ogs as well and i love her very much. anyways, she lived here until high school, where she went to live with her father in my hometown lol, in suburban madrid. so. pretty big change. i unfortunately cannot find her video, she might have just deleted it at this point - i watched it at least 10 years ago - but i found what her village is if you want to look it up, it's called roblelacasa, and as of 2016 it has 22 inhabitants. i remember she told in the video that she had to go to another village to go to school, and that in said school there were 6 kids in total, of course with different ages all together in the classroom.
#guadalajara#spain#also. and i feel obligated to say this every time i talk about andrea compton or inés hernand but it's the only good thing i can say#about my hometown#but not only did she live near me. the high school she went to is the one that's next to my house. like the park in front of the hs was#the park i went to when i was a kid#which most likely means i met andrea compton and inés hernand when they were teens and i was a kid#cause all the kids from that high school also go to that park#and for those who don't knw#inés hernand is like. one of the most important people in this country i would say??? at least among young people#she studied law but she's mostly a tv presenter nowadays and she is like. extremely political extremely leftist extremely funny#i love her#well they've talked thousands of times how andrea and her met on the first day of high school and became best friends and how tehy've been#inseparable since#to think that happened next to where i live while i was living there just blows my mind lmao#and we've met andrea compton cause she's my sister's favourite youtuber like she's been following her since she was like 10#in fact my sister was the one who showed me the video about her village#anyways we've met her twice in anime cons and also we've also met her a couple times more in concerts and stuff cause she's fan of stuff#we also love sjdsj#and every time we talk about my hometown and we know ehere her dad lives (very close to us) and she's confirmed the high school was that on#and yeah. she's very dear to my heart and i'm extremely happy everytime she gets recognition cause it's only what she deserves <3

Of The Abyss
Pairing: Maul x Shireen Oqir (f!OC)
Word Count: 2.9k
Warnings: Depictions Of Violence
Summary: Something unknown has been calling Maul through the Force. The young apprentice is eager to find the source and put an end to the distraction of the voice.
<< Previous || Chapter 1 || Next >>
Read on Ao3!
Tumblr media
Chapter 1 - The Veil
The Outer Rim has always been a vast place of uncertainty. A region the galaxy’s biggest scum call home. Countless criminals — smugglers, slavers and pirates. The latter of which Maul spotted in the system when he arrived. Thanks to the cloaking device of the Scimitar, they hadn’t noticed him. The presence of pirates came as a surprise as there is nothing of interest in this system. Not for them, at least.
At first, the voice had only ever appeared within his dreams. Calling? It is always inaudible, undiscernible. Dreams of the forgotten voices of the Sith? It didn’t matter then, dreams can be deceiving. Until he heard it again one night, in a fully awake state.
The Sith apprentice had just paid his master a visit on Coruscant, growing more impatient for revenge with every new meeting. We shall not reveal ourselves to the Jedi yet. To gain power, one must garner strength first. So, his master tasked Maul to find that strength by indulging in his bloodlust. However, he was not satiated, the hunger still lingering deep within.
It was then on Coruscant when he heard it. Still unable to make out what it was saying, yet, in a way, the young assassin felt drawn to it. As if it was calling for him. Pleading him to find it.
And it led him all the way to this planet.
With heavy footsteps, Maul wades through the soft, deep snow on a deserted planet somewhere in the Outer Rim. Snow was falling when he entered the atmosphere. Once he landed, it had already turned into a storm. The raging snowstorm has gotten even worse after he stepped outside of his ship. It might have been able to protect him from the snow, but it appears the voice itself is weakened by the heavy weather, as he couldn’t hear it in the Scimitar.
For that brief moment his mind was filled with silence, and, for the first time, he contemplated the decisions that led him to this point. Was the Force playing tricks on him? Fooling his mind for undefined reasons? Perhaps it was his master’s doing, testing his apprentice for his determination.
As soon as Maul set foot outside the Scimitar, the voice was back, all but a whisper. It had never been very prominent before — faint yet powerful enough to reach him all the way up on Coruscant.
He doesn’t know how long he’s been searching for the source. What feels like hours must’ve been only a few minutes in the cold. He considered sending out his Sith probe droids but what would they be looking for? Maul himself doesn’t even know what is waiting for him to be found.
He comes to a halt as soon as the call is getting louder, minimal but it seems to notice that he’s getting closer. One turn to the right and after a few more steps Maul finds himself standing in front of a subsidence.
From his position he spots something halfway buried in the snow, awfully close to a hole in the ground. It reveals the blue stone underneath the snow. By closer inspection of the object, it appears to be a ship. Out of the parts that are still visible, it seems to be a Kom’rk-class fighter with a certain symbol drawn onto it. Unusually far from the Mandalore sector.
From what he can tell, the planet has no noteworthy qualities — the living conditions are non-existent, and the climate makes it useless for mining. It’s highly unlikely the Mandalorians came to this place on purpose. Their ship must’ve crashed. And yet it wasn’t a distress signal that called him here — it was the Force. Maybe the ship had been stolen. A Jedi who fought the gun-slinging warriors and took their ship?
At the mere thought of the Jedi, his muscles tense up. His body temperature rising so high it could have melted the snow under his boots. The pure hatred the Sith apprentice feels for them only fuels him to continue his way to the ship. If it actually is a Jedi, they would be a fool to call a Sith for help, even if unintentional. It will be their last mistake.
Before reaching the Starfighter, Maul steps on something solid, making it crack on impact. He stops in his tracks and lifts his foot slightly, taking a step back. He uses the same foot to brush the snow aside. Buried underneath is a pile of bones. At the end of it — the skull of a Nikto.
Was this the pilot of the ship? It is highly unlikely that the planet inhabits any lifeforms, especially the Kajain’sa’Nikto, who are native to desert climates. So, the cold must’ve been the death of this one. But why leave the ship in the first place? Granted, it seems to be non-functional, but what were they hoping to find out here? Additionally, a single one of them would never be able to take a Gauntlet Starfighter from a Mandalorian.
Perhaps the pirates in this system are looking for missing members.
The whistling of the snowstorm isn’t as loud as it was before, as this location is shielded by the surrounding stone, but still howling through the silence of this planet.
Something stirs within Maul when he notices that it’s not as silent as it should be. He senses a presence, though not from inside the ship.
He slowly turns around, scanning the area for any sign of life. Due to the snowfall, it’s hard to make out anything other than the contrasting blue walls of stone, forcing him to squint his eyes. What he spots are several other piles scattered across the ground. Without doubt more bones — the rest of the crew, but the opposite of what he’s looking for.
The feeling of the presence is getting clearer. It’s closing in on him. As Maul turns to look at what’s approaching him, he swiftly moves out of the way. His opponent misses the attack and lands several meters away from him. Its feet slide over the ground, pushing it even farther. After it regains its footing, it roars at him — hoarse and strained, baring its sharp teeth. Then it leaps into movement, sprinting at him in a zigzag pattern.
Maul gets a hold of his spear. He swings it at the incoming creature, which brakes sharply and avoids the attack by taking a step back. He swings again, from right to left and it dodges by quickly ducking its head. It then aims to bite at his legs. He jumps out of the way, making the animal close its mouth around air. It hisses at him.
The creature continues to rapidly bite at him, alternately targeting his legs, arms and head. Maul jumps, crouches and swerves to avoid the attacks. Every step that gets him closer to the ship, his opponent moves between him and said object, pushing him back again. The creature has the agility to do more damage but refuses to leave its general position.
When Maul finds the chance to strike the animal, it does nothing. His spear scratches at the scales but no cut appears. Then his opponent hastily spins around. He evades the attack of the spiked tail by doing a backward somersault. He lands a few meters away from his attacker.
Instead of lunging at him again, the creature stays at a distance but remains cautious, nonetheless. It starts circling Maul, slowing down once it’s in front of the ship.
In this position, he gets a better look at the creature. It seems to be a kind of quadrupedal reptilian he cannot name. The scales are a mix of warm shades of yellow and orange. There is something resting around its neck, most likely frills that it hasn’t presented yet. Due to — at least from what he can examine — them protecting the softer and vulnerable belly. Another desert inhabitant stranded on this ice planet. And perhaps a more plausible explanation for the demise of the Nikto and their fellow crew members.
Despite its size advantage, it fully relies on agility instead of brute force, opting only for quick attacks so far. Though, this one doesn’t even reach half the size of a Rathtar and Maul has slain several of those before. If he can injure the legs, he should be able to slow it down, giving him the opportunity to reach the more vulnerable parts of its body.
As soon as it stops prowling, the animal straightens its posture, trying to seem even bigger than it already is. In this short-lived moment of abeyance, Maul is able to sense something within his opponent — despite never forming a connection with animals before — though it isn’t furious anger as one would expect from a feral creature, but instead uneasiness.
Maul keeps his feet steady on the cold ground. His gloves creak from the tight grip around the spear. He then takes the opportunity to strike first. As expected, it tries to dodge the attack, so he spins the spear around and whacks it into the creature’s head, making it stumble back a few steps, slowly moving away from the ship.
Now its belly and legs are exposed, so the Sith apprentice stabs his spear into the chest plates of the animal. They are unexpectantly resistant, the wound doesn’t go very deep. In fact, it seems like it barely made an impact. One small screech and it whips its tail at his legs. He easily jumps over it. While still partly in the air, the creature pushes its whole weight against Maul. He stumbles slightly but regains his footing fairly quickly. It results in the spear getting shoved in a little deeper.
To help it get further, he places his hand right before the blade starts and puts pressure on it. The reptile bites into the handle of the weapon and frantically pushes and pulls until it escapes the wound.
Neither of them lets go of the weapon, so it turns into a constant back and forth between them. Maul uses enough strength to fully pull the creature away from the ship.
Visibly angered by his resistance, it quickly rises to stand on its hind legs and uses all its brute force to push the Zabrak to the ground.
It leans its whole weight on both his arms, pressing Maul deep into the snow. Then, it gets full hold of the spear and throws it into the direction of the hole. The weapon is gone.
While Maul can’t move his arms to reach for his lightsaber, his legs are free to move. Before the creature turns its full attention back to him, he kicks up into the wound. It winces at the impact, removing some of the weight. He kicks it again, this time into its lower jaw.
Eventually, it releases him fully, stumbling away as the hits to its head seem to have disoriented it.
Maul jumps back onto his feet in one swift movement. Before the reptile can fully recover, he whips out his hand and sends it flying into the rocky wall behind it. Snow falls from the top of the cliff and buries the creature underneath.
Whether it actually had an effect, the creature doesn’t let it show — shaking the snow off as it re-emerges from it.
Maul awaits the next move, his hand moving to his lightsaber. But it doesn’t come. The animal still in its place, as if frozen by the snowstorm. It snarls at him, and then, for the first time, spreads its neck frills — most likely a threat — and screeches, the sound shrill and vibrating. Then it vanishes. Washing away like a holo that was turned off.
It’s not actually gone, he can still feel its presence. The intensity of its rage and determination to win the fight. And it’s drawing closer.
Seeing as there are no other lifeforms present to witness Maul’s next move, he pulls out his lightsaber, ignites one side, and strikes upwards.
The creature cries out in pain, taking a step back as it reappears right in front of its opponent. Its right front leg now graced with a cauterized cut. It tries to stand on it, but the wound doesn’t allow for any pressure. So, it limps away from him, taking small steps on only three legs. Though, even now that it’s injured, it doesn’t leave the area.
This gives Maul the perfect opportunity to strike the creature down. It keeps its distance but stays close enough for him to look into its yellow eyes. He notices its view is resting on the red light of his saber. Then they move upwards, creating direct eye contact for the first time. Sharp breaths shoot out of its nostrils, visible in the cold.
The ignited blade still burns in front of the Sith assassin’s body, just like his desire to put an end to this conflict. But now that they’re standing here, the only noise being the wind howling through the air, he can’t push himself to do it. And it confuses him. One look into the reptile’s eyes and it feels like he’s greeting an old friend. Out of everyone he met, Maul feels this way about an animal that had just tried to kill him. Or maybe, he doesn’t exactly understand the concept of a friend. Regardless, it looks as if it feels the same. There’s no more anger, no more rage.
Its eyes move to look at the ship, then back at him. It growls lowly before leaving the area completely.
The noises whistle through his mind again — or perhaps it is the wind carrying the snow around? The voice has been quiet during the previous encounter. He turns off his lightsaber and puts it away before stepping closer to the ship. Even now, while being this close to the source, it only gets gradually less audible as the storm is getting worse. As if the cold is trying to drown it out, choke it until it fades.
The Gauntlet lays slightly askew next to the rocky wall. The majority of the right wing is buried in the snow, while the rest of the ship is covered in a thin layer of fresh-fallen snow. He walks around it, to the ship’s bow and finds a way underneath it, to the airlock door. He spots it, partly open. Most likely opened by force. Now he wonders whether it was to get outside or inside.
The opening is big enough for Maul to slip through.
Once inside, it feels as though he just entered a whole different world. Shielded from the reigning storm, the durasteel drowns out any noise from outside. Though it’s not very successful at keeping the cold out. His breath being just as visible as it was in the cool air.
The interior of the Gauntlet is covered in ice. The cockpit is completely shut off, sealed behind a thick layer of frozen water. Every footstep echoes within the crystallized walls. It’s so quiet he can hear water droplets land on the durasteel. There are a few puddles scattered across the floor, alongside small pieces of ice.
This strange feeling that flows through his whole body returns. He doesn’t quite know what to make of it, nor does he fully understand it. It’s very weak but still present, although it seems like it’s being held back. Imprisoned. Shrouded by the Force. And desperately trying to breach through. The silent atmosphere in the ship makes it feel stronger than it is. And still, it leads him to go further.
As Maul passes even more ice, he stops. His eyes scan the wall, and he notices a shadow. Something is inside.
In his periphery, he spots several lines scraped into it. Always grouped in a number of four within close proximity. And there are a lot of them scattered across the block of ice. It must have been desperate to reach what is frozen.
He places his gloved hand on the ice, the coldness immediately piercing through the leather. The ice wall consists of several different layers. The ship is in a continuous loop of melting and freezing again due to the extreme climate of the planet. Though it was never enough to free what is trapped. Maul wipes over the half-melted and fogged-up ice to reveal what it conceals.
The silhouette is a lot sharper. Its contour delicately shaping it. A shape that’s familiar to him.
Someone is inside.
Most obviously the source of what called him here. It’s not louder, but clearer. It isn’t saying his name, it might not even be speaking. It is more of a humming. A sound he would describe as melodic, yet strange. His muscles go slack as his whole body goes into a state of serenity. As if whoever is in there wanted him to be here and that’s why they called for him.
This unusual feeling entices him to place his hand back on the ice — fingers spread while only their tips touch the frozen wall. Through the Force Maul senses the person’s exact position and then makes the ice break around them.
A crack — and it splits in various directions. He removes his hand and takes a step back. He silently watches it break apart until the person inside is unveiled — a young woman.
Asleep. Or unconscious. As soon as she’s fully freed, she drops to the floor with a loud thud.

Played fuckin D1 rugby players today (we are D3 for the record) and for the entire 30 minutes I was on the field they did not score. Neither did we, mind, but while I was with the pack those fucks did not score and that's what matters.
