School is getting really busy, but I really want to make time to post things for you guys. It gives me a break from doing chemistry homework and writing college essays. I hope this helped someone, and have a great weekend.

Honestly you can't really dispute the reputation toon has for being a football loving drunk city because that's.. very true. but there's soooo much to it that isn't boozing

we have sooooo much history to begin with. I always recommend people go to see the Castle and Cathedral if they're interested in roman history (a lot of links to Hadrian naturally) and Norman history, and especially if you're an architecture nerd like me (Grey Street is also a great place for architecture). Plus we were the second city for a looong time

There's also a lot of museums and science centres people don't seem to think about much. The life centre and the great North museum are both great days out as well as Shipley art gallery (technically gateshead). Also the discovery museum!!! It has the whole British Film Institute archive and tons of maritime history

Mostly though, people don't realise how many wonderful green spaces there are near toon. Tyne Riverside and Derwenthaugh are both stunning !!! Also, I have spent sooooo much time at Jesmond Dene just sitting and watching the waterfall. Also the coastline in the summer is glorious and heading up to whitley bay when the weather is nice is just *chefs kiss*👌👌👌

Not to forget the amazing surrounding areas, you're so close to Durham which is a gorgeous city and of course Alnwick in the other direction (if anyone is ever there, try going through the Poison garden without passing out)

EXPUNGE GOP lawmakers propose repealing NC law they passed to erase criminal records

A bipartisan proposal to fix issues with the implementation of a state law that provided for arrest records to be automatically erased in some cases is no longer moving forward.

Instead, a legislative committee approved on Wednesday legislation that would repeal the law allowing automatic expunctions.

The existing law expunged arrest records after people were found not guilty or had their charges dismissed.

It went into effect under the Second Chance Act, a major criminal justice reform bill that lawmakers unanimously passed in 2020.

The bill that would repeal the law was advanced by the House Judiciary 2 Committee over objections by Democrats and despite pushback from advocates who urged GOP lawmakers to keep automatic expunctions in place, and pass the solutions devised by a working group consisting of various state and local law enforcement leaders.

Lawmakers introduced the bill Wednesday as a substitute to the proposal that would have resumed automatic expunctions by Dec. 1, while implementing some of the changes recommended by the working group.

That proposal passed the Senate unanimously in April 2023. Problems with court records not being retained

Rep. Sarah Stevens, the Republican committee chair who presented the bill, said there were several problems stemming from court records not being retained when cases were being automatically expunged, which made it necessary to repeal the law for the time being.

“It’s not that we’re not willing to visit (this) again, and it’s not that there’s not a remedy to get your dismissal expunged,” Stevens said. “But right now, this system was not working, for the clerks, for the DAs, even for the defendants.”

Lawmakers elected to pause automatic expunctions twice after the rollout revealed unintended consequences, The News & Observer reported.

Those included people remaining in jail because paperwork sheriffs needed to release them after their charges were dismissed had been destroyed;

public defenders being unable to calculate their hours for payment;

and defendants who had been acquitted not being able to prove that their charges had been dismissed to immigration officials, employers, or housing managers.

The working group addressed all of those issues, said Whitley Carpenter, the senior criminal justice counsel and policy manager at Forward Justice.

“With any new system, implementation may initially present some problems,” Carpenter told lawmakers, “but as we have seen in the many other states that have passed similar laws, we have to be willing to work through these problems if we really want to address the second chance gap,” she said.

A ‘scarlet letter’ to contend with

Stevens said that if automatic expunctions are stopped entirely, people whose charges are dismissed by prosecutors can still fill out a form requesting their case be expunged, and that doing so shouldn’t cost them anything.

Democratic Rep. Marcia Morey, who served as a judge in Durham for 18 years, said processing those forms in courts that are already backlogged can take months if not years, and that lawmakers need to follow through on the commitment they made to people who deserve to have their cases expunged.

“We told people, if you are not guilty, or if the DA has dismissed your charges, it will not be a scarlet letter on your chest to prevent you from getting jobs, getting housing,” Morey said.

Morey acknowledged the issues that arose after automatic expunctions went into effect, but said the solution wasn’t to throw the entire system out, but to adopt the fixes that had been put forth, and passed by the Senate.

Several advocates from criminal justice reform groups also urged Republicans to not repeal the law, telling the committee that despite snags in the rollout, automatic expunctions benefited more than 400,000 eligible North Carolinians in the first eight months the program was in place, before it was paused.

“An expunction for someone can be the difference between having access to employment, housing, or other means to support themselves and their families,” said Quisha Mallette, a staff attorney at the NC Justice Center.

“Many people that I serve are shocked to hear that after a decade or more, for some of my clients, even 50 years, they still have to deal with this mark on their record,” she said. “Others are surprised to hear that a dismissal appears on their record at all.”

Bill helping more clear crime records heads to N.C. governor

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly on Tuesday finalized bipartisan legislation that will allow more people to get their criminal records cleared of lower-level criminal convictions and dismissed charges.

The Senate gave unanimous approval to the “Second Chance Act,” which had the backing of groups across the political spectrum.

The measure, which cleared the House last week, builds upon recent expunction laws that allow people who committed crimes due to youthful indiscretions to eliminate obstacles in background checks for employment, housing and other needs.

“There’s a lot of lives that this bill will change,” Sen. Danny Britt, a Robeson County Republican and bill sponsor, said on the Senate floor.

Under the bill now heading to Gov. Roy Cooper’s desk, convictions of nonviolent, low-grade felonies and misdemeanors committed while a person was 16 and 17 years old before last December can now be removed.

Such counts are now considered juvenile court offenses under the state’s “Raise the Age” reform, and thus not on a person’s public record.

The Second Chance Act also automatically removes misdemeanor and felony charges that are dismissed or disposed as “not guilty” starting next month.

And a person or prosecutors can now seek to have multiple nonviolent misdemeanors removed more quickly.

Prosecutors can still access a person’s “erased” records for sentencing recommendations should the person commit more crimes.

Sen. Jeff Jackson, a Mecklenburg County Democrat, praised the measure, saying it will be the most important jobs bill that senators will consider this year.

The left-leaning North Carolina Justice Center and the conservative Americans for Prosperity pushed for the measure.

The measure “represents a refreshing moment where state leaders across the political landscape have come together to acknowledge that individuals should not be punished for the rest of their lives for crimes they have already served their time for,” Conservatives for Criminal Justice Reform said in a news release.

The General Assembly also moved one step away from sending to Cooper another bill that will give judges more discretion in sentencing and penalties against drug-trafficking offenders.

Under the First Step Act — given unanimous support in the Senate — a judge could sentence someone below the mandatory minimum if the person meets specific standards.

For example, the defendant can’t be a repeat offender or have used violence in commission of the crime, and must admit to a drug addiction problem.

Backers of the bill have said it will help people with substance abuse issues avoid needlessly long sentences when treatment is what they need.

The House could vote on the final product as early as Wednesday.

Britt used the First Step Act’s advance to criticize Cooper, accusing him of backing legislation while a state senator in the 1990s to increase drug-related sentences.

Cooper also served as attorney general from 2001 through 2016.

“I hope now-Gov. Cooper signs into law the Republican-led legislation to overturn the disastrous policies he implemented,” Britt said in a news release.

Cooper spokesperson Dory MacMillan said the governor “is committed to protecting public safety and removing inequities in our justice system. The governor strongly supports sentencing reform and encourages it to move ahead in a bipartisan way.”

I can be quite morbid at times, but even I thought this piece of art was a tad grim. Standing outside the entrance to Durham Clayport Library, it's hardly welcoming. But it tells an important part of Durham's history, i.e. its association with St. Cuthbert of Lindisfarne. Called 'The Journey', the sculpture refers to the story of St. Cuthbert's coffin, which was carried around by monks for several years until it found a resting place at Durham Cathedral. Will add rest of the story later.

My phone conked out halfway through the trip so I didn't get to take many photos. Durham was much a smaller city than I expected, so I spent the next day in Newcastle and Whitley Bay. I was going to walk along the coast to Cullercoats and Tynemouth, but I did my ankle in and was hobbling about in pain and had to turn back! I managed to see St. Mary's Lighthouse in the distance on the north side of the bay and hope to return to complete the trip to Tynemouth another time. Also, I was told by a woman from Hartlepool that the beaches there are wonderful, so that may be another expedition for the future.

Popped into Newcastle City Library. I don't always like modern libraries, but this one has lots of natural light. Durham's central library is quite small, but I found a book on British Folk Art which I made some notes from, e.g. about Crimean and Indian war quilts made by British soldiers. Visited the Cathedral (built by the Normans in 1092, I was informed by a friendly verger), early morning before I left, the best time to avoid the tourists and I sat in the quad part outside listening to the bells' call for service. Was lucky with the weather, turned out I'd avoided a lot of rain at home. Lots of sunshine.

They did Durham date as a CD-drama. It was the first time that I saw Japanese people openly complaining that much on the Official Anime comments/qrt. They really did a mistake with this one. Anyway, where do you think they will stop the anime ? Could we be able to reach the Final Problem ?

Yeah, I saw that...God, I hate drama CDs.

I already talked about all of this on Twitter, but I just fundamentally do not understand why the cut “The Adventure of the One Student” for “The Merchant of London.”

“Plot reaso--” Bullshit.

Even purely from a plot standpoint, The Merchant on London really only contributed the fact that Milverton had found out that William was the adopted son, and they crammed all of that reveal into an after-credits scene that was like a minute long if that.

Plus, do they need it? It gives reason for them to confront Milverton, but Milverton also pushes them into Whitley’s death, which absolutely none of the Moriartys wanted. They already had a reason to end him. And Milverton doesn’t do anything with the knowledge that William is an assumed identity. The entire arc is fun and I love it, but all it really does is have Liam Being Liam.

Meanwhile, The Adventure of the One Student was a mental standoff between the protagonist and antagonist of the entire damn series and watching them discuss and exchange values and circle around each other’s plans for the climax. And I truly do not understand how The Dark Night of London reveal works without it. If we even get that at this point, but we sort of have to, don’t we? At least partially?

Suffice to say, I do not have any idea what the anime is planning anymore. I could not tell you where the anime is actually planning on ending or what they plan on covering because every time I’ve tried to guess, I’ve been wrong, and the anime is an incredibly bizarre adaptation to me at this point.

I think we’re going to get the Final Problem because of a lot of the key images released for this cour, but also because I don’t think we’re getting anything else after this cour at all and they will want to wrap it up (I guess they could wrap it up at The Two Criminals, but it would be weird). I don’t think anything they do with The Final Problem will be considered “good.” It’s nine chapters! Even if they threw everything else out at this point, they would be crunching for episodes!

I’ve seen the idea that they’ll do The Final Problem as a movie, and I have to laugh because the second cour clearly does not have the budget for a series they think might have the potential for a movie. I will be stunned.

What I really worry is, with the way the first cour dealt with Sherlock and Liam, and some of the things the second cour has cut and the way the tonally dealt with things like Irene, is...well, that the manga got too damn gay and they’re backtracking.

Because the manga has been pretty queer for a while now, but the first cour ended on December 20th, 2020, and Chapter 53 of the manga came out on December 4th, 2020, which was too late to change the last couple episodes, likely, but not too late to change the second cour. And Chapter 53 was...a whole hell of a lot of unavoidably gay nonsense, and chapter 55 released February 4th, 2021, which was even more, and the anime didn’t pick up again until April 2021.

I cannot confirm this, but I can definitely see the anime staff trying to backtrack once they realized, a little too late, that this was a whole lot canonically gayer than they thought it was and started doing damage control because that’s not what they thought they agreed to. I mean, "The Adventure of the One Student" is hella popular, so I don't think it got cut to put something more popular in.

Again. This is a theory, not anything confirmed, and I could be wildly off. Maybe they just suck at their jobs. Maybe they're playing darts. Maybe the anime staff is bad writers. I’m just worried and annoyed and suspicious.

Connecticut News: New London Drug Dealer, ANTHONY WHITLEY Pleads Guilty

Connecticut – John H. Durham, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut, today announced that ANTHONY WHITLEY, 35, of Hartford and New London, pleaded guilty yesterday before U.S. District Judge Jeffrey A. Meyer in New Haven to count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute heroin, cocaine and 28 grams or more of cocaine base (“crack”).

According to court documents and statements made in court, on March 3, 2017, a court-authorized search of a New London apartment connected to WHITLEY and his nephew, Bashon Whitley, revealed approximately 14.5 grams of heroin, approximately 27 grams of cocaine, approximately 177 grams of crack cocaine, items used to process and package narcotics for street sale, a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun, ammunition and $9,180 in cash. Anthony and Bashon Whitley were arrested on state charges at that time.

Judge Meyer scheduled sentencing for October 23, 2018, at which time Anthony Whitley faces a mandatory minimum term of imprisonment of five years and a maximum term of imprisonment of 40 years. Whitley has been detained since his arrest on March 3, 2017.

On May 30, 2018, Bashon Whitley pleaded guilty to the same charge. He is detained while awaiting sentencing.

This matter is being investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, Connecticut State Police Statewide Narcotics Task Force East and New London Police Department. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Natasha M. Freismuth.
