What knives do professional chefs prefer 2021?
A chef’s knife is probably the only kitchen tool you must use every single time you prepare food . Even a stove can be optional — you can do without it to make a salad , say , or tartare , but a good chef’s knife is indispensable . Humans’ reliance on knives goes way , way back — some scientists say that what really made us human was the moment when, about two and a half million years ago , some pre-human ancestors used a crude stone blade to cut up a carcass . The ability to cut up meat , share it , store it , and carry it , allowed us to consume more calories and to relate to each other differently . Our brains got bigger , our jaws got smaller , our tools got more sophisticated and our cooperation improved — the whole progression of human history sparked by the knife . And all of it leading to you , standing in Williams Sonoma , debating between a Wüsthof and a Global .
Tumblr media
I have to say that you don’t have to find the best knife and there isn’t the best knife . You just need to find one that fit you most . To find such one , you should consider many variables, like the size of your hands, the style of your cooking, and what feels natural and comfortable to you .
Above all else , high-quality chef’s knives offer versatility . Unless you spend considerable time peeling pears or deboning fish , you don’t need a special paring knife , boning knife , slicing knife , carving knife , serrated knife or other specialty knives . A chef’s knife should be able to accomplish 95% of your needs . And let’s not even get started on the counter space consumed by a knife set in a giant knife block .
Since you’re going to be using it a lot, a chef’s knife should be a pleasure to use — properly weighted, but not heavy enough to make using it tiring. You might even want an ergonomic handle. A good knife has a durable blade — it gets a lot of use — and that blade should be consistently sharp. There’s nothing worse than a dull knife when cutting, chopping and slicing, so edge retention should be a priority. Chef’s knives also come in a variety of materials. You could get a stainless carbon steel knife or a ceramic knife .

10 Smart Stocks to Buy With $5,000
If you’re looking to build a portfolio of stocks to buy with just $5,000, the advent of fractional share ownership has made it a whole lot easier. Google the words “fractional share portfolios,” and you get 527,000 results with everything from reviews on seven of the best fractional share investing brokerages to links to some of the leading players in this burgeoning area of the markets. Many think of Robinhood when they think fractional, but the truth is almost every major online broker in this country’s got some offering or service.InvestorPlace – Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips Heck, I can remember years ago, when FolioFN was the only game in town. Launched in 2000, it was acquired by Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) in May 2020. FolioFN’s self-directed accounts are scheduled to be transferred to Interactive Brokers (NASDAQ:IBKR) early in 2021. In the meantime, for those who don’t want to do the work of constructing a $5,000 portfolio of stocks to buy, here are 10 recommendations to help get you started. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL) Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) SVB Financial (NASDAQ:SIVB) Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A, NYSE:BRK.B) Dollar General (NYSE:DG) Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) Williams-Sonoma (NYSE:WSM) Thor Industries (NYSE:THO) 9 Stocks That Investors Think Are the Next Amazon Their share prices will add up to $5,000 or less. To make things interesting, all 10 stocks must have share prices exceeding $100. Stocks to Buy: Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL) $1,740 Source: BigTunaOnline / Shutterstock.com It’s funny, I had intended to include Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) in my list of 10 stocks to buy, but given I was limiting my names to those companies with shares prices greater than $100, the e-commerce giant’s $3,166 share price would have made it awfully hard to fit nine more under $5,000. So I went with Alphabet, a company I didn’t write about at all in 2020, but helps me achieve my task. InvestorPlace’s Mark Hake recently suggested that rising ad sales make it an attractive investment in 2021. My colleague compares Google to the valuations of Apple, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT), and Amazon. He reckons that Google should have a similar valuation to the three companies at $1.43 trillion or 6.7 times sales. As I write this, Google’s market capitalization is $1.18 trillion, 17% below Hake’s simple calculation, which puts its share price at $2,112 per share. I like the upside. Tesla (TSLA) $845 Source: franz12 / Shutterstock.com The second-highest share price in our $5,000 portfolio, we can thank Elon Musk for doing a five-for-one stock split in August 2020. Without it, TSLA would take up 86% of our investment capital. I’m an unabashed Tesla fan, so I’m not going to give you reasons why the valuation is over-the-top, although there’s no question it puts all the other large car companies to shame with its $810 billion market cap. InvestorPlace contributor Matt McCall recently gave investors some wise advice regarding the electric vehicle (EV) maker. McCall believes that rather than griping about the price you have to pay for its shares, embrace the fact that even the mighty Tesla has corrections, so buy like crazy on the rare occasion that it happens. To illustrate his point, McCall references its pullback in September 2020, shortly after its stock split. On Aug. 31, it was trading just under $500. In a week, it fell 34% after Tesla was left off the annual additions list for the S&P 500. 7 Cheap Stocks to Buy as Democrats Gain Control Ultimately, Tesla was added to the index on Dec. 31. As money managers added TSLA to their portfolios, it moved even higher. Nvidia (NVDA) $528 Source: Hairem / Shutterstock.com If you’re one of the lucky investors who joined the Nvidia bandwagon five years ago when it was trading around $26, you’re sitting on an annualized total return of more than 79% through Jan. 13. It’s crazy to think that things can get any better for NVDA shareholders over the next five years. Still, they actually could, given the growth in gaming, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence. As my InvestorPlace colleague, Faizan Farooque, recently stated, you most certainly won’t be buying Nvidia if you’re a value investor — it trades at 45 times its forward earnings, far higher than many of its peers — but when it can grow sales at 50% a quarter and continue to beat analyst expectations, it most certainly deserves a premium valuation. In June 2019, I argued that Nvidia’s free cash flow made it a great stock to buy on dips. At the time, it had lost about half of its value over nine months — October 2018 to June 2019 — and was trading around $145. Some 18 months later, it’s up almost four-fold and generating more than $4.2 billion in 12-month free cash flow. Buy some now and wait for the next big dip. It’s bound to happen sooner or later, no matter the near-term prospects. SVB Financial (SIVB) $465 Source: Pavel Kapysh / Shutterstock.com I’m not going to say too much about SVB Financial because it’s one of those bank stocks to buy that you have to get to know for yourself to understand why it’s so special. You wouldn’t think this was the case by the analyst coverage of its stock. At the moment, 21 analysts cover SIVB, with eight rating it a buy and 12 a hold with an average price target of $424.49. Sure, it’s come a long way over the past year compared to its peers — it has a one-year total return of 74.2% — but that’s because investors recognize that the bank’s laser-like focus on providing lending, asset management, and banking services to innovators and entrepreneurs will always be in demand. Recently, it announced that it would pay $900 million to buy Boston Private Financial Holdings (NASDAQ:BPFH) for a combination of cash and stock. The Boston-based private bank specializes in wealth management and other banking services. Together, SVB Financial’s wealth management business will have almost $18 billion in assets under management. The 7 Best Marijuana Stocks on the Markets Right Now Continue to ignore SIVB at your peril. Roku (ROKU) $418 Source: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com The streaming platform has gotten off to a hot start in 2021, up 26% year-to-date and more than 205% over the past 52 weeks. Roku and HBO Max parent, Warner Media, buried their longstanding disagreement recently by announcing that the streaming service would be available on Roku as of Dec. 17, 2020. By getting a spot on Roku, HBO Max is now on all the major over-the-top platforms. “We believe that all entertainment will be streamed and we are thrilled to partner with HBO Max to bring their incredible library of iconic entertainment brands and blockbuster slate of direct-to-streaming theatrical releases to the Roku households with more than 100 million people that have made Roku the No. 1 TV streaming platform in America,” Scott Rosenberg, SVP of Roku’s platform business, said in a statement. The key part of the above statement is that Roku believes that all entertainment will eventually be streamed. I couldn’t agree more. That’s why I recommended ROKU stock in December 2017 and still recommend it among stocks to buy in 2021. Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A, BRK.B) $235 Source: Jonathan Weiss / Shutterstock.com I recently read an article about the reasons why Warren Buffett failed in 2020. This kind of analysis of the Oracle of Omaha has been going on for years, possibly as long as Buffett’s been investing in stocks to buy. Yes, Berkshire Hathaway severely underperformed the S&P 500 in 2020 — up 2.5% versus 16.5% for the index — but I’ve always believed that the biggest boost to BRK stock will come when the holding company has to be methodically wound down due to the passing of Buffett and Charlie Munger. Consider that its equity portfolio, which is massive at $271 billion, represents just one-third of Berkshire’s assets at the end of September 2020. I can assure you that the true value of the $418 billion or so in privately-owned assets on its balance sheet is worth far more than this. When the time comes to wind it down, the board will do what’s necessary to ensure fair value is obtained for every business. It’s possible the process could take a decade or more. The 7 Best Startups You Can Buy on StartEngine Right Now When people say that Warren Buffett has lost his touch, they forget that the final tally has not been given. Not by a longshot. Dollar General (DG) $213 Source: Jonathan Weiss / Shutterstock.com It’s not a secret that Dollar General caters to customers that don’t have a tremendous amount of disposable income. It probably also doesn’t come as a surprise that its employees aren’t flush with cash, so the fact that it will pay those of its 157,000 employees who get a vaccine four hours of pay is noble. And smart business. “‘We do not want our employees to have to choose between receiving a vaccine or coming to work,’ Dollar General (DG) said in a press release, noting that its hourly workers face hurdles to getting vaccinated, such as travel time, gas mileage or childcare needs.” If there’s a retailer that has done well during Covid-19, Dollar General would have to be at the top of the list. In early December, Dollar General reported Q3 2020 results that included 12.2% same-store sales growth and a 62.7% increase in earnings per share. As a result, it’s passed on a total of $173 million in 2020 for employee appreciation bonuses. As it continues to open more stores while simultaneously growing its gross margins, the fact that it remembered that its employees are the ones who deliver this good fortune to shareholders is a big reason why DG stock will continue to move higher in 2021. Apple (AAPL) $130 Source: Hadrian / Shutterstock.com Most of the talk around AAPL stock right now revolves around its long-simmering Project Titan and its efforts around delivering its own autonomous electric vehicle. The Verge recently reported that Apple held discussions in 2020 with Canoo (NASDAQ:GOEV), the EV startup using a platform based on a skateboard to provide a much better cabin design for its future vehicles. Canoo apparently just wanted some investment capital. Apple, on the other hand, was thinking more about acquiring the business and integrating it into its existing work in this area. The two didn’t come to an agreement. Canoo went public and Apple’s now working with Hyundai (OTCMKTS:HYMTF) on getting a self-driving EV to market by 2024. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives recently suggested that Apple could be worth $3 trillion by sometime in 2022 due to strong iPhone 12 sales. He projects it could sell as many as 250 million in 2021. “If Apple continues to execute at this pace, a $3 trillion market cap could be on the horizon over the 12 to 18 months,” Ives is reported to have said. 7 Dividend Stocks That Are Growing Their Payouts As I write this, it’s at $2.2 trillion. Williams-Sonoma (WSM) $125 Source: designs by Jack / Shutterstock.com Several news outlets reported that the retailer’s CEO, Laura Alber, sold some Williams-Sonoma stock just before Christmas. Don’t be alarmed; it was only 15,000 shares or 3.5% of her total holdings. And it was part of her Rule 10b5-1 trading plan started in September 2019. As I always like to say, even wealthy CEOs have bills to pay. Over the past year, Williams-Sonoma stock has delivered a total return of 61.4% for its shareholders, including Alber. That’s double the returns of the specialty retail sector as a whole and three times the entire U.S. markets’ performance. In June 2016, I called WSM one of the best retail stocks to buy due to its excellent omnichannel experience. Going on five years later, nothing’s changed about that assertion. During Covid-19, business at the retailer has been full-speed ahead. Here’s what I said about it in December: “It’s got a business that’s ideally balanced between online and brick-and-mortar sales. In the second quarter, it generated 76% of its sales online; in Q3, due to the novel coronavirus constraints, its online sales accounted for 70% of its total revenue — while growing by almost 50% over last year– and that’s during a pandemic,” I said on Dec. 9. “More importantly, its Q3 profits were through the roof — up 151% to $2.56 a share thanks to significantly higher margins — and that was only through Nov. 1. It doesn’t include Black Friday and Cyber Monday.” The world’s going digital, and that’s good news for Williams-Sonoma. Thor Industries (THO) $105 Source: Angel DiBilio / Shutterstock.com There is no question that 2020 was good for recreational vehicle manufacturers such as Thor Industries, as people young and old sought the great outdoors, away from the maddening, Covid-19 crowd. The problem for investors who’ve followed the RV industry for any length of time is that the good times never seem to last. In the case of the novel coronavirus, once vaccines make humans comfortable with packing together in large crowds, the great outdoors won’t be nearly as enticing as Paris or Australia. That being said, the latest push into RVs may be coming from a sub-set of consumers who might actually take to the open road. “All dealers are reporting a high mix of first-time buyers as evident by lack of trade-in units,” said Wells Fargo analyst Tim Conder in a July 15, 2020 note. “Dealers are saying as high as 80% of customers are first-time buyers … vs. the typical 25% mix. The pandemic is driving the purchase decision for new-entrants.” If even half of those first-time buyers stick around long enough to upgrade to a bigger or better model, Thor Industries might not have to worry about the eventual downturn. To me, THO is one of the perfect stocks to buy for the long haul, buying more whenever it corrects by more than 5-10%. On the date of publication, Will Ashworth did not have (either directly or indirectly) any positions in the securities mentioned in this article. Will Ashworth has written about investments full-time since 2008. Publications where he’s appeared include InvestorPlace, The Motley Fool Canada, Investopedia, Kiplinger, and several others in both the U.S. and Canada. He particularly enjoys creating model portfolios that stand the test of time. He lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Monday Merriment
Infusing grandeur into otherwise drab Mondays with five things/ideas/events for the week.
Tumblr media
I.  If I could choose how to spend the perfect day, it would be entirely in the kitchen. I planned to do so yesterday, but lost track of time on a hike and found myself frantically abbreviating my elaborate dinner menu. While most homemade desserts include several ingredients and take precision to execute, soufflés surprisingly fall outside both categories. With all the ingredients already on-hand, I whipped up a spiced chocolate version with crème anglaise in under twenty-minutes. (Do it in fifteen by substituting melted vanilla bean ice cream for the anglaise). Here’s the recipe for two individual soufflés.
Ingredients: tbsp soft butter, tbsp diced cold butter, tbsp white sugar, 6-oz chopped semisweet chocolate (or half a bag of semisweet chocolate chips), half tsp cinnamon, half tsp cayenne, half tsp cream of tartar, two eggs.
Instructions: preheat oven to 400 degrees. Melt chocolate in microwave whisking every thirty seconds to prevent clumping (about two minutes) or on the stove, then stir in cold butter/cinnamon/cayenne. Separate eggs, combining the yolks with the chocolate mixture and placing the whites in a bowl. Add cream of tartar to the whites and use an electric mixer or Kitchen-aid to whisk until stiff peaks form. Gently fold egg whites into the chocolate mixture until you can no longer see white. Butter two small ramekins (you can find these everywhere from most grocery stores to Williams-Sonoma) and divide white sugar between them so that the sugar covers the butter, then discard any extra sugar by tapping the ramekins upside down over your sink. Evenly distribute the chocolate mixture between the two ramekins and bake for 10-12-minutes until the tops rise about an inch over the rim of the ramekins. Serve immediately alone or with crème anglaise poured in the center.
Tumblr media
II.  Over the weekend, a friend I hadn’t seen in nearly two years came to visit. Though his trip was only 24-hours, we decided to make the most of it by exploring scenic Highway 1 south of Monterey. With no clear plan in mind, we meandered down the coast, blasting 80′s music, stopping for drinks at Roy’s fire pits, pausing for pictures at Bixby Bridge and Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, and engaging in deep conversation. Our journey ended at legendary Hearst Castle, which neither of us had ever been to, before turning around to head home. I arrived back in San Francisco with a renewed sense of dedication to making time for spontaneous trips outside the city going forward. Whether you’re a local with a penchant for sticking to routine (like me) or planning your next California vacation, I can’t recommend the breathtaking 80-mile stretch between Big Sur and San Simeon highly enough.
Tumblr media
III.  After following Emily Weiss (who can forget her portrayal of Teen Vogue’s resident mean girl on The Hills?!) for a decade, I finally gave in to temptation and ordered several products from her direct-to-consumer beauty company Glossier. The millennial pink branding and cult following make the items must-haves for women under the age of 40. After perusing reviews, I decided to order cleanser, toner, makeup remover, moisturizer, and vitamin c serum. Much to my horror, I awoke with a rash on my face after using all of the products the evening they arrived. I initiated a return, and was shocked when they issued a full refund after advising that I keep everything for free and take the time to try each product separately to identify the culprit. The impressive customer service more than made up for the rash, and will keep me coming back as a newly minted Glossier devotee. So far, I’m a fan of the exfoliating toner and affordable C serum, and plan to order Boy Brow soon.
Tumblr media
IV.  What if there was an easy way to craft a stunning floral arrangement without employing flimsy tape grids or messy foam? Well, I’m delighted to tell you that there is! Handmade ceramics boutique Rico Terre recently launched holed vases that make creating bouquets significantly easier. An added bonus, you will require less flowers because they won’t be crammed together. Play with height variation and thin branches to take your arrangement to the next level.
Tumblr media
V.  A fan of both exotic leather and monogrammed anything - I’m constantly on the lookout for phone cases that marry the two. My first try, Gigi New York, had an attractive price-point, but felt a little unsophisticated. My second attempt, celebrity-endorsed brand Vianel, was completely underwhelming. The company’s logo was displayed prominently on the case, and my monogram wore off within a few weeks. Third time was the charm, because I’m in love with the cases I ordered from The Case Factory (black alligator and gray ostrich, both with gold lettering). The Stockholm-based company creates gorgeous pieces that arrive quickly and last around a year before showing signs of wear and tear. If you’re in the market for yourself or a gift, I enthusiastically suggest checking out TCF.
Have a wonderful week! xx tt

Why “Product” Is Experiencing A Renaissance
The key competence around building shareholder value in retail used to be location. People didn’t have the opportunity to go much farther than the corner store. Then it was distribution. The railroads gave consumers the opportunity to enjoy different products produced at scale, which lowered prices and gave them brands they could depend upon.
We then moved to an era of product, especially in the automobile and appliance industries, largely fostered by the innovation that was a peace dividend from World War II. We got better cars, washing machines, television sets, even better apparel. The leather bomber jacket was invented in World War II, as was Silly Putty, the radar, the microwave, the transistor, and the computer. That led to the financial age, in which a group of companies, using cheap capital to roll up other companies into conglomerates, built the ITTs of the world. This in turn was followed by the great brand age of the eighties and nineties, when the key to building shareholder value was to take an average product—shoe, beer, soap—and build aspirational, intangible associations around it.
We are again back to an era of product, as new technologies and platforms—be it Facebook or Amazon user reviews—let consumers conduct diligence across a broad array of products in a fraction of the time it used to take to shop. The ability to conduct diligence has never been easier, which reduces the need to default to brand or reputation. Now, the best product has a better chance of breaking through the clutter—whereas before, the best product without any marketing was like a tree falling in the forest. Moreover, the injection of digital “brains” into otherwise static, inanimate products has ushered in a new wave of innovation in which custom, personalizable apps can be quickly downloaded and upgraded without the need to replace the original “box.”
A mattress is a mattress until you get an iPad and some basic technology. Then you can program in an “ultimate sleep number,” and so can your partner. Or you can order the best mattress online, avoiding those damp warehouses called mattress stores, and have it delivered in a box and (cooler yet) watch it unfurl when dumped out of the box.
I have to take my car to the dealership to get a tune-up. My neighbor has his tune-up transmitted wirelessly into his Tesla’s operating system. The engine receives an upgrade and instructions to remove the speed regulator, and the car’s top speed increases from 140 to 150, remotely. Do you remember who made your landline phone, before chips and wireless set them free?
Nearly every product in the world, even products and services that appear to have been commoditized, have forged new dimensions and consumer value, enabled by cheap sensors, chip sets, the internet, networks, displays, search, social, and so on. Today, almost every link of the supply, manufacturing, and distribution chains has a new means of differentiation. All of a sudden, products driven by technology and defensible IP are the bomb.
However, don’t be trapped into thinking that product differentiation is about the widget you’re selling. Differentiation can occur where consumers discover the product, how they buy it, the product itself, how it’s delivered, and so on. A worthwhile exercise is to map out the value chain of your product or service from the origin of the materials through its manufacture, retail, usage, and disposal . . . and identify where technology can add value, or remove pain, from the process/experience. You’ll find that this value can affect every step—and if you happen to spot a step where it hasn’t, start a new company there. Amazon is adding technology and billions to the fulfillment segment of the consumer experience that will likely create the most valuable firm in the world. Before Amazon, ordering from Williams-Sonoma meant you would pay $34.95 to get the product in a week. Now it’s free in two days or less. The most mundane part of the supply chain ended up being the most valuable in the history of business.
The Power Of Removal
When brainstorming for new ideas, entrepreneurs have a tendency to focus on what can be added—how to enhance the experience— instead of what can be taken away, thus making it less painful. But I’d argue that the majority of stakeholder value created over the last decade has been a function of removal. We, as a species, have mostly figured out what makes us happy: time with loved ones, physical and mental stimulation, substances that heighten or deaden those feelings, Netflix, and sassy church signs.
You may be tempted to think that competitive advantage in the internet age comes down to simply “more for less.” After all, that’s an obvious edge enjoyed by Amazon. But what about Apple? It’s almost always the premium-priced brand—and though its products are typically better than the competition, they usually aren’t that much better for the prices Apple charges. I would argue Amazon could charge as much for its products as do its brick-and-mortar competitors . . . and would still dominate the marketplace. Why? Because it’s still infinitely easier to hit a couple keys on your computer to buy a book or a piece of furniture than it is to drive down to the local mall, find a parking place, walk a half mile, be overwhelmed by tons of irrelevant merchandise, and then lug your purchases back to your car for the drive home. Amazon has removed all that friction and brings your purchases to your door for less than the cost of gas for your own car.
So, while it may seem that the value explosion brought by the technology revolution comes from the addition of new features and capabilities, its greater contribution comes from removing obstacles and time killers from our daily lives.
Friction is everywhere. For example, there is a ton of friction in transportation. That’s why Uber saw an opportunity, via GPS, texting, and online payment, and removed the pain and anxiety of ordering a car, wondering “where the hell is the car,” and fumbling around in the back of the car at the end of the journey trying to dig out money and pay. How many of us recently have bombed out of a taxi without paying because we’ve become so used to frictionless Uber? Bottom line: paying is friction, and it is disappearing. Just as hotel checkout disappeared a decade ago, check-in will be a thing of the past in another ten years. Some of the better hotels in Europe no longer require you to sign a bill after a meal. They know who you are and will charge you. Less is more.
Each of the four dominant brands of our time has a superior product. It sounds old school, but Google really does have a superior search engine. The Apple iPhone is a better smartphone. The cleanliness of Facebook’s feed— coupled with the “network effect” (the fact that everybody’s on it) and a constant stream of new features—makes it a better product. Amazon redefined the shopping experience and expectations: from 1-click ordering to getting your product within two days (or in hours, soon by drone or a truck UPS used to own).
These are tangible innovations and points of product differentiation. All have been achieved through access to cheap capital set against deft technological innovation. “Product” is experiencing a renaissance. If you don’t have a product that is truly differentiated, you have to resort to an increasingly dull, yet expensive, tool called advertising.

A little about me: Currently 19 years old, full-time college student studying Accounting. What I doI run a knife sharpening service in my town out of my parents' garage. I pick up kitchen knives for residential homes, sharpen them, and return them in under 2 hours. I'm not even trying to really scale up right now. I also run a (fairly successful) online ACT tutoring service and have been mowing a lot of lawns as well. Why knife sharpeningRealized only two stores in my town sharpen knives. One is a camping store and the reviews I hear about them are horrible. The other is William-Sonoma and they mail them out and it takes up to 10 days to get them back. I get them back in under 2 hours.ReviewsHonestly, I'm crazy proud of the reviews I've received. You can read some here: https://imgur.com/a/6LMt5FzI've realized people dont really care about how sharp they are. I always show up exactly on time, text and communicate constantly during the process, and try to make friendly conversation when I interact with the customers. I also really push the story of a college student and Eagle scout raising money for textbooks (lol read beer) through some entrepreneurial efforts.RevenueI only sharpen when I'm home from college. Spring break 2019 I made $900 profit in 7 days. Tbh I keep pretty bad records but I've calculated I make $30-$60/ hour depending on the customer and how bad their knives are. On the days that I'm sharpening from 10-5 I usually make +$250-$400.PricingI charge $1/inch. Most orders run $30-$100. I feel guilty sometimes for t charging much when its really easy, but no one has ever complained and most say its very reasonable.Expenses.Honestly, almost negligible. My sharping system costs $120 on Amazon. If sharpening full time, I buy new set of belts every few weeks for $15. A set of belts can easily bring $300-$400 in revenue. I only sharpen in a 3 mile radius from my home so gas is very cheap.AdvertisingI've gotten 95% of my business through referrals on Nextdoot. I ask each customer to write a review, which creates a snowball effect. For those unaware, Nextdoor is a social media app designed for neighborhoods. You only see posts from a ~4 mile radius. Whenever I posted about my service I would get taken down, due to their strict self-promotion policy. However, I then found if customers essentially did the advertising for me, I saved money and got far more leads.I've used Facebook ads a couple time and lost money in the end. What's nextI plan to going door to door once school ends. I did a door-to-door pest control sales job last summer and knocked 16,000 doors, so I have some decent experience selling. I've tried hiring a friend to sharpen while I was gone at school but he was lazy and I had customers complain so he got the cut.AMA!

How to Use Instagram to Generate Leads for Your Small Ecommerce Brand
Have you ever considered Instagram as anything more than a brand building platform? Here is how you can use it to generate leads and drive more sales.
Instagram is not just for posting beautiful sunset and creative lunch photos. It’s a great lead generation platform with over 1 billion active users every single month. 90% of them follow a business on Instagram.
Facebook conducted a survey of Instagram users. They found that people use this visual platform to research products and services, discover what’s trending, and make buying decisions.
Once people see product information on Instagram, 87% of them take action. They either follow a brand, visit a retail shop, or make a purchase online.
Instagram guides shoppers through the buying journey. You can use this platform to connect with potential buyers and compel them to take action. It’s a great platform to generate leads for your small ecommerce business and drive more sales.
Instagram Lead Generation Tactics for Your Ecommerce Business
Before you get into lead generation, there are a few things that you need to take care of including:
Confirm that Instagram is the right platform for your brand promotions. It is important to ensure your target audience actively uses this platform.
Describe your ideal buyers. Creating accurate buyer personas can help you ensure that your marketing efforts will attract the right audience.
Define SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, time-based) lead generation goals.
How many leads do you want to generate in a month or quarter? Do you plan to reach, attract, and engage prospects? Which key performance indicators (KPIs) will you track and measure?
Once you have all this information laid out, you can start using the Instagram lead generation tactics mentioned below.
1. Optimize Your Instagram Profile
Optimize your brand’s Instagram profile for conversions. Everything from your bio to post captions and images should get people to follow your brand, engage with your content, or act on your calls-to-action (CTAs).
You can use Instagram Insights to analyze what type of content drives higher engagement and more follows for your brand.
When people like your content, they may take the time to check out your Instagram profile. And the first thing they see is your bio.
You should use your Instagram bio as a 30-second pitch to tell users who you are, what you do, and what value they’ll get by following you. Use this space to add a CTA that drives visitors to your website or landing page.
Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your voice and personality. You can include emojis, humor elements, or slang to give users a glimpse of who you really are. Check out these examples to get ideas for your Instagram bio.
Here’s another one for you. Johnny Cupcakes provides social proof by showcasing recognition by the Boston Globe and uses emojis to add fun to his bio.
You can also include a trackable URL in your bio to direct viewers to a dedicated landing page. Additionally, you can add action buttons like Text, Call, Directions, and Email buttons to allow people to take action directly from your profile.
2. Use Instagram Stories to Generate Leads
More than 500 million accounts use Instagram Stories daily. In fact, Instagram Stories are leading Snapchat in terms of daily active users.
This shows that Instagram Stories have the potential to help you reach your target audience with the right messaging.
But how should you leverage the power of Instagram Stories?
The answer lies in telling your brand’s story. It can help viewers connect with your brand easily. They’ll likely remember your brand better, start trusting your products or services, and may become loyal customers too.
If told the right way, branded stories can attract and engage people more than traditional ads. They can help consumers develop an emotional connection with your brand.
Here is how you can effectively use Instagram Stories:
Promote your latest blog posts, products, or services using catchy headlines and compelling CTAs. This can help you redirect viewers to your blog, product pages, or specific landing pages.
Share informative content that your followers want to see using live videos or snippets of your video content. You can ask your followers to swipe up to view the whole video.
At the end of the video, you can place strategic calls-to-action such as “Sign Up for Online Course” for lead generation.
Use Instagram Stories to share behind-the-scenes content. This may include pictures and videos about what makes your company unique or how your employees go about their daily tasks.
Sharing personal stories can help you build trust and eventually get people to purchase from you.
Use Instagram Stories to drive user engagement by enabling them to ask questions about your products. By answering their questions, you can help them decide which products they should purchase.
Have an influencer take over your Instagram Stories and post content related to your brand or niche. This is an easy way to get instant access to their followers.
Host a competition or giveaway on Instagram Stories. Ask your followers to tag their friends and share your content so that you can increase your reach and encourage other people to join the competition.
3. Use User-Generated Content
Content from friends and family members influences the buying decisions of 60% of consumers as they consider it authentic. This is the content that your brand can tap into.
When a customer shares their positive experiences, you should leverage their authentic reviews for your lead generation campaigns.
You should encourage your customers to use a branded hashtag and share their real-life stories of using your products on Instagram. A branded hashtag can help you increase your visibility and track user-generated content.
You can use tools to discover popular hashtags that are relevant to your niche and then create one that’s unique to your brand.
Williams Sonoma, a brand that sells kitchenware and home furnishings, encourages people to share how they’re cooking with their products. In their Instagram bio, they give a link to UGC images and videos.
When you click on those images, they allow you to shop or get recipes. Users can also opt-in to receive exclusive offers and recipes through emails. They use this opportunity to build an email list and, ultimately, nurture leads to drive sales.
4. Run Instagram Lead Ads
You can run lead ads on Instagram to collect valuable consumer information such as their full names, email addresses, genders, and phone numbers. All you need is an Instagram Business profile and a Facebook Page.
It is easy to follow the ad creation process on Facebook with step-by-step instructions. You will have to start by choosing a marketing objective in Facebook’s Ads Manager.
You should choose “lead generation” as your objective and then:
Name the campaign.
Define your audience.
Select “automatic placements” to show your ads to more people.
Set a campaign budget and schedule your ads. How much would you like to spend? When would you like your ads to appear?
Pick a format for your ad.
Choose the image or video you want to use, and set up the text and links for your ad.
Create a lead generation form to use in your ad.
5. Track the Performance of Your Instagram Lead Generation Tactics
Use Instagram Insights and/or other third-party tools to track the effectiveness of your lead generation efforts. You need to ensure that every penny you invest is worth it and is helping you generate qualified leads for your business.
You can calculate the return on investment (ROI) of your Instagram campaigns by measuring:
Number of visits to your landing pages
Conversion rates of your landing pages
Customers’ lifetime value
Customer acquisition cost
How to Use Instagram to Generate Leads – Conclusion
If you haven’t started using Instagram for lead generation, now is the time. Use the tactics we’ve discussed in this post to drive prospects to your Instagram profile and landing pages.
You can start by defining your lead generation goals and associating them with metrics to measure. You can then create an effective marketing strategy, and optimize it by testing your strategies until they help you get a good ROI.
This may look like a lot of work, but the results you’ll get are worth it.
How are you leveraging the power of Instagram for lead generation? Please share your top-performing strategies with us in the comments below.

Ferrari Racing Days 2019
Not since 2004 have we had such a religious experience at the track. That August, at the Monterey Historics featuring the cars of Ferrari, we saw scores of amazing and historic Ferraris and also some, at that time, modern F1 hardware. Back then, we were completely plugged into all things F1. Neither of us had yet to go to a race and we’d wake up at 4:30 am to watch the races live on SPEEDVISION. In 2004, F1 seemed very far away from us both literally and figuratively. The U.S. had its own race, but neither of us had the time or money to get to Indianapolis to witness it, so the thought of seeing the circus anywhere was a non-starter. We were both fans of Ferrari and Williams and sucked up every second of every race, watched every grainy video available on the internet, and bought every punitively priced F1 trade rag in sight to get all of news and conjecture we could find. (We appreciate that some of our younger followers might not be able to appreciate the struggle).
But we digress…
Anyway, all of a sudden, we were up close and personal with real F1 cars, Ferraris no less, and we were only 3 hours from home. What Ferrari factory driver Andrea Bertolini did for us that weekend in an F2002B and an ex-Schumacher F2003GA will remain forever etched in our brains by the banshee-like scream that emanated from some magnificent Ferrari V10s . (The hoots heard in this grainy video (below) were saturated with human tears #tifositears)
So now we fast forward to May of 2019 as the stuff of the Ferrari Racing Days occupied Weathertech Raceway Laguna Seca for one glorious weekend. Ironically, our video technology has improved, yet it was the now 15 year old V10 in the Ferraris that made the day for every single person at the track. Sadly, F1 has become so advanced in the modern era it is often times unwatchable and lacking the audible and visual spectacle of the normally aspirated era.
This wasn’t the garden variety Ferrari Challenge weekend we’ve experienced several times in the past, both at Laguna Seca and Sonoma Raceway. This was the full beans, double barreled, tour de force “Ferrari Racing Days,” featuring the Ferrari Challenge cars, Clienti Program and XX Program(me) cars. As the 2004 Historics event and aforementioned F1 exhibition was a function of the Clienti program, we had some idea of what to expect. We thought we’d see “some” FXXs, maybe a handful of the La Ferrari based FXXK Evos, and maybe a few more cars from Ferrari’s fabled past. No matter the proportion of any of these things, it was going to be good.
What we got was a little bit more. Granted we didn’t see many pre 1990 (what happened to the carburetors?) cars anywhere at the event, we couldn’t begin to tell you now what was missing from the cars that Ferrari did bring for some of their most valued customers to drive around our most favorite racetrack. There was a single stunning Enzo based FXX and a gaggle of Curvy and winged 599XXs, but there were over 20 La Ferrari based FXXK Evos crowding the pit garages and unbelievably, that wasn’t even the best part. The best part were the 3 cars at the south end of the garage complex.
There rested two glorious F2004Ms, one ex Michael Schumacher (5 RACE WINNER) and the other ex Barrichello, and a gorgeous V12 powered 333 SP prototype. We’re not entirely sure what the cars in that garage complex were worth in money and history, but damn, it was breathtaking….literally. There was a moment before the the three cars went out to warm up on Saturday morning. One of the Clienti mechanics was warming up the 333 SP. That sound alone summoned us to record the moment on video. A few moments later, a group team of Clienti techs started one of the 04 F1 cars and the sounds began to ebb and wane, periodically drowning each other out. The concrete pillar I used to steady myself to shoot the video began to roil with every free rev and blip of the waking V12 and V10. A few moments later the second of the two cars was shut off and I looked over at the mechanic in charge of the 333 and said simply, '“Thank you.” Looking around at the other onlookers in the garage, we all nodded at each other with an unspoken understanding that we’d just witnessed something special to us…something that we probably won’t ever experience again.
How does one acquire a piece of the Scuderia? Ferrari has offered its F1 Clienti program since 2003 where the uber wealthy could pay for the ultimate uber toy, a former Ferrari F1 racecar. Prices are not advertised, but information indicates that median prices approach $4-5 million are grow from there based on provenance of the specific car. This is a lot of money for sure, but consider that this program provides for not the only costs as running a Formula 1 car, but also a full crew of factory mechanics with old laptops, spares, all the associated kit and institutional memory of Ferrari, depending on the vintage of car. The program manages all logistics associated with moving the cars around to various events. Most owners store their car at Maranello where Ferrari technicians maintain and service the cars and do the appropriate safety checks before the owner takes to a race weekend. As formula technology has advanced utilized hybrid technology Ferrari has suspended the sale of their modern F1 cars due to the risk associated with the electric technology.
The demonstration of the Ferrari F1 cars was an amazing reminder of the power and sound of Ferrari’s previous dominance of F1. That alone made the weekend. At one point we said to each other, “I’ve seen what I needed to see.”
But we weren’t done.
What made this event monumental is that it was the first time the rocket-ship-like Ferrari FXXK Evo cars have appeared in California. Year after year we’ve seen Ferrari bring out its XX program at other foreign and domestic tracks and events, just to be disappointed that California, home of great race tracks and and a solid car culture, has been left out of the celebration of this fantastic beast. What makes these XX cars so special? You can’t drive them on the road as they are not street legal. You can’t walk into a Ferrari dealership and buy one. Ferrari chooses/invites you to purchase one of these pinnacles of unregulated technological development. The latest maddening creation of the XX program is the Ferrari FXX K Evo, with over a 1000 horsepower, and only 40 examples ever made. It was sold out before it was even built, and buyers were chosen not just for their ability to foot the near $3 million dollar price tag, but also based on their history of Ferrari ownership and passion for the brand. The FXX K is the third XX model from Ferrari in the past decade. The Enzo morphed into the FXX in 2005 and the 599 GTB Fiorano spawned the 599XX in 2009.
For a long time the rumor was you could buy an XX Ferrari but that it had to be stored at the factory, and that as owner one had to request permission from Ferrari to bring it out on track. In 2016, Road & Track Magazine published an article on just that subject and even got a response from Ferrari:
The majority of the cars are stored in Maranello in the Corse Clienti department, but customers are free to have them at home. It is mandatory, however, to have a full review of the car by the Ferrari crew team before the car hits the track in any event or private testing session. Anytime the car is taken to the track, for an official Ferrari event or personal test session, there is always a mechanic and technician. He'll do the full check up when the car arrives at that said track.
The bread and butter….
The Ferrari Challenge is the longest-running single-marque racing series, and it's featured in three different regions around the world - North America, Europe and Asia Pacific. The events also include a paddock of road going Ferraris (for participants and Ferrari Club members etc.) for an additional motivation to put and keep the event on our calendar. (Sometimes the parking lot and/or car corals at Laguna Seca are worth a three hour dive)
The series was established in 1993 and races on tracks in FiA approved events around the world. Participants are Ferrari dealers or authorized race shops with three classes racing through a racing weekend.
There are also three categories for each race: Trofeo Pirelli, Trofeo Pirelli Am and Coppa Shell, which includes further classes like the Gentlemen Cup, for drivers over 55, and the Ladies Cup for women (available in Europe and Asia). This seemingly all inclusive format provides all who can foot the bill for participation, with an opportunity to race among those with their relative skill level, and also with some of the best sportscar talent on the planet. Competitors from each series are brought together at the annual World Finals (Finali Mondiali) event.
The foundation of the series these days is Ferrari's 488 Challenge, the first turbo powered car to be raced in the Challenge. The 488 Challenge is based on the 488 GTB road car, with 670HP, just over the road car’s 660HP. That alone doesn't seem like much (relatively speaking), but the Challenge has other tricks. Optimized engine mapping and shorter gear ratios provide power off the line while body work inspired by the the 2016 FiA World Endurance Championship-winning 488 GTE provides better downforce and stability. It’s eight seconds faster around the Fiorano test circuit than the 488GTB road car.
The Ferrari Racing Days at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca briefly pulled back the curtain on the mystery and aura of the XX and Corsa Clienti programs and lived up to its jaw dropping display of technological mastery exhibited by the folks at Maranello. We witnessed about half of the Ferrari FXXK’s ever manufactured, lot’s of other things with “X” in their name, more 488s and 456s than you could shake a stick at and a car corral with enough supercars in it to make you think Ferraris were as common as Honda Civics. The sensory overload was so much that we forgot bout the Ferrari Challenge itself. Its easy to forget when seeing these track designed thoroughbreds that Ferrari is one of the smallest automakers in the world.
Finally, we want to give a shout out to the management, media relations department and all the staff at Laguna Seca for hosting this event and for putting up with us for a weekend.
As always, we encourage you to scroll down to see our gallery, as our pictures usually much better than our prose.
Enjoy.

Essential Tools for Your Home Renovation Project
Whether you’re big on DIY projects or want to be able to make timely reparations or maintenance work when needed, having the proper set of tools is essential. While you can get away with borrowing or renting some tools you may only need once in a blue moon, there are some tools you just can’t live without and you could end up between a rock and a hard place if you ever need them at a critical time. Here are some of the tools anybody who wants to perform home renovations should have on hand at all times.
  A Good Hammer
Whatever you do, you won’t be able to get much accomplished without a good hammer. And the emphasis on the word “good” here. Not all hammers will get the job done and underestimating the effect a good hammer can have is a big mistake. However, that doesn’t mean you should invest in a precision hammer or a big hammer for carpentry work, just a plain ol’ trusty all-purpose hammer that will get the job done.
One of the first things you will be looking at is the claw. Some people prefer a curved claw, but a rip claw will also work for most jobs. Whatever you do, however, try to stay away from wooden handles as they’re much less durable and won’t handle shock as well. Try to go with something like a fiberglass handle instead. Go with a smooth face since they won’t mar surfaces. And a wider head is usually better.
Try to go for a drop forged hammer as well. You’ll usually be able to see if the hammer was drop forged on the hammerhead. While drop forged hammers are a bit more expensive, they will last longer and will be stronger, so that would be a wise investment in the long run.
A Demolition Bar
Demolitions bars, also commonly referred to as wrecking bars, are metal bars with a flat end and a V split meant to rip out nails and do some praying and demolition work. The opposite end will usually have a chisel shape that will be used for prying things apart and as a lever. You can also drive this end in using a hammer on the bend of the wrecking bar.
Ladder
You can have any tools at your disposition, but you won’t be able to get much done unless you have a good ladder on hand. Whatever the renovation project is, chances are you’ll need a ladder.
Aluminum ladders are usually the go-to choice since they’re lightweight, fairly resistant to corrosion, are both water and flame resistant and tend to be more affordable than other options. And whether you’re looking for an extension ladder or a steep stool, you’ll find what you’re looking for in aluminum.
A Good Miter Saw
A good miter saw will allow you to perform a wide variety of jobs. If you want to cut 2 X 4s or window trim, then a power miter saw is the best option. It will allow you to make angled cuts or 90-degree crosscuts whenever you need to.
However, while miter saws can be very versatile, you’ll be limited unless you invest in a good miter saw stand as well. If you’re looking to cut long pieces of wood, then a good miter stand will allow you to keep workpieces steady as you cut. If you don’t know which miter saw stand would be the best for you, it would be wise to look at a few best miter saw stand reviews first before you make a decision.
A Cordless Drill
A high-quality cordless drill is another essential tool you won’t be able to live without if you’re going to do some serious renovations. While you don’t have to necessarily go cordless, you’ll be limited if you go for a corded tool. Cordless drills are also much safer if you’re going to do something like roofing work for instance.
When buying a cordless tool, you dont have to go crazy with the power. While 18-volt models are more powerful, a 12-volt model will usually be able to handle most jobs. You should also be looking for something with a good run time. You should be looking for something with a light Li-ion battery which will give you maximum power until it’s completely drained. You should also look for something that can charge fast. Most Li-ion batteries can be charged in as little as 15 minutes with smart chargers, so make sure you make it a priority. Other things you should be looking for are comfortable handling, adjustable speeds, convenient options, and a good warranty.
Drill Bits
High-quality drill bits are also something you can’t do without if you’re going to do some serious renovation work. Drill bits come in a variety of shapes and sizes and can cut different hole types through different materials. You should be looking for reliable and durable drill bits that can handle heavy duty work. This isn’t somewhere you should skimp on quality since cheap drill bits could give up on you in the middle of a job. So, make sure that you invest the amount necessary on high-quality drill bits that can handle any type of work.
Pliers
Pliers might not seem essential at first, but they can be indispensable when performing certain jobs and you can be very limited if you don’t have a good pair of pliers on hand. Pliers are essential if you’re trying to hold objects firmly when trying to bend or compress them. They also allow you to amplify your hand power and focus it on a small object with precision. There are tons of pliers on the market in a wide variety of sizes, all with their own purpose. Make sure that you have a nice pair of groove pliers with you whenever you’re performing any type of renovation work since you’ll never know when you’ll need them.
While these are only some of the tools you might need to perform renovation work, you’ll have trouble getting anything serious done without them. Make sure that you have all these tools on hand if you’re intending on doing regular work around the house.
