My STS question this week is pretty straightforward: what’s your character’s biggest insecurity?
(To get less straightforward: why? How does it affect them? Do they recover/get better about it, or does it stick with them forever?)
Oh hell yes, let's talk about insecurities with Baltan and Eureka because they have the exact same insecurity: being able to protect and care for their loved ones.
Baltan is...physically not impressive, in his opinion. He's short, he's kind of scrawny, and everyone around him is so much more physically capable. He knows that his mind is his greatest asset, but there are limits to what intelligence can do when it comes to protecting people from violent threats. He tries, really hard, to be in control of situations and figure out the "right" thing to do, but sometimes there is nothing and he feels helpless or even, at worst, like he's a liability.
Eureka, on the other hand, IS physically impressive. He's easily the most powerful member of the cast when it comes to strength and hand-to-hand combat. He grew up with the expectation that he is the protector, his purpose is to be a meat shield, and if anyone gets hurt on his watch it is directly his fault for not doing a good enough job. His general opinion is "It's fine if I get hurt, as long as no one else does."
So these two run anxious circles around each other because they both want to protect the other and think they're failing if the other returns that sentiment. At least they're on the same page when it comes to Azzie and Lleuwellyn, and putting their sons' safety ahead of theirs ;w;
I love them, your honor.

Grieving for the life that one could have led.
ALiCE is built on regret, and WHiTE RABBiT even more so--that there were so many chances for things to not have turned out this way, for people to have made better choices, the glimmer of a better and brighter future being so close yet unreachable. Grieving not for who you lost, but the version of you that never got the chance to be.
In Like Falling Stars, Nicolas realizes who he could have been (a friend, a brother) and spent one hundred years wasting time in bitterness...to say nothing of Anais and Grey, because that would be spoilers.
Eureka in Stellar Eclipse is constantly second-guessing if he's living the right way. Certainly his life doesn't look the way his younger self would have envisioned, or wanted. But does that mean he's living a bad life? Has he ruined his chances to be a father, a husband, a brother, or is there still time, even if it isn't what he'd thought it would be? He stands out the most, but Baltan, Lleuwellyn, Azzie, and several other characters have similar concerns.
And Shifting Roots...goodness, there's so much grief, both for lives lost and lives never lived. The questions of "did I do the right thing? is this who I'm supposed to be?" hangs so heavily in the air around Spottedshadow, Dawnfrost, and Goldenpelt that they might as well be on the cast list.
Grief is ever present. It's also a staple of storytelling. What grief is common or most frequently seen in your story?

WIP Rec: Stellar Eclipse
So, it’s Writeblr Positivity Week!  When the event was announced, I immediately knew what I wanted to do: WIP recommendations!  (Seven in total; one for each day.)  These...kind of ended up taking the form of pseudo-reviews (if reviews only ever said good things), so hopefully that’s okay?
Anyway, the first rec is book one of the Stellar Eclipse series (Cloudless Rain) by @roselinproductions!
Stellar Eclipse
Brief Description: Baltan and Eureka, retired murder investigators, team up to try and solve one last case after finding a half-dead child bearing the mark of a serial killer they once put behind bars.
Things to Love:
FOUND FAMILY!!
The mystery element is so good??  Honestly one of my favorite parts of the first book.
The main villain, Selkess, is complex and incredibly interesting to read about.
WORLDBUILDING.
It’s a series! While only the first book is out now, that means there’ll be plenty more in the future.
My Thoughts: Honestly, the Stellar Eclipse series was one of the first WIPs I followed on here. An urban fantasy murder mystery with found family elements??  Yes!  All the yes!  I loved watching the group come together through the first book, and the mystery of what, exactly, Selkess was up to and why meant that it was very hard to put the book down.  The ending also surprised me quite a bit, actually, so I’m really looking forward to book two to see what happens to the group.

Fact Swap: In Stellar Eclipse, the East has dragon gods. Every single member of their pantheon is a dragon!
ooooh I love it! i’m a huge fan of dragons! which dragon god is your favorite so far?
there are dragons in Groundhog Day! technically, there are bird dragons! in fact, a lot of my wips have these strange creatures in them, marking them all as “technically in the same universe sort of”! Locke has a patoo bird dragon and Bolte feeds a stray condor dragon!

Fridays are good days for writeblr~ My fun fact: My current WIP (the second book in the Stellar Eclipse series) is m u r d e r i n g me because I keep having to make one of my favorite characters sad ;n; why can't I stop lol
I’m sorry Dark Lightning is murdering you BUT I’m SOOO excited for it (idk if that eases the pain or anything). I know the feeling, though. Making characters you love sad is very painful but also necessary. It’s also bad because you technically have the power to stop and make things better at any point (ya know… as the author). But really, you don’t have any power because you have absolutely no control over your OCs – control is just an illusion.

Stellar Eclipse: Dark Lightning
In Stellar Eclipse: Dark Lightning, the new installment of the Stellar Eclipse series, the epic adventure that blends space opera and superheroes, renowned supervillain Dark Lightning is out for revenge. Will she get revenge on superhero Light Cloud, or will their sudden attraction turn into a stellar eclipse… of the heart?
Send me your WIP’s working title and I’ll write you a silly fake short blurb based on whatever nonsense pops into my head when i read it

I wrote 2,000 words of WTS Cloudless Rain today, including a fresh take on THIS iconic scene:
In Baltan's experience, the most direct path was often the most reliable when it came to the truth. The murderers they had taken down always had elaborate schemes and longwinded monologues to justify themselves, but their actions always came down to a few simple questions with simpler answers. While other investigators had gotten caught up in the why and how, Baltan and Eureka had found much of their success in going straight to the what, when, and where. Even the mysterious newspaper, unsettling as it might be, was more than likely a ruse to draw them off course. A distraction to ensure the killer had time to set up their next move while they floundered and fretted. Eureka said the kid didn't have a name, so he didn't. Simple as. Which meant… "You are not naming him," Baltan said flatly. "He needs a name," Eureka responded, every bit as matter-of-fact. "I don't disagree, but I thoroughly object to you naming him." Baltan crossed his arms over his chest. "What did you call the last cat you found? Wasn't it Yellowy, or something? What kind of name is that?" "It wasn't Yellowy! It was Goldy." "And the others?"
Eureka counted them on his fingers. "Spotty, Peachy, Masky, Stripey, and…Gray-y." "My point stands," Baltan said. Still, it wasn't as if he had any ideas. He would have to come up with something fast. Bringing the boy into their home was already more involved than he wanted either of them to be; naming him was certain to cement whatever attachment Eureka had already formed. "Why don't we just call him Zhan for now? That's what we would do with any other nameless victim." "That's hardly better than leaving him without a name at all. And he isn't a corpse." Baltan opened a fresh bottle of soda and sat down next to Eureka on the couch. "Well, let's hear your suggestion, then. But I reserve the right to say no on his behalf." "Seasires," Eureka offered. "Which means?" Baltan pressed, an eyebrow raised. He was fairly certain he knew; he may not be fluent in Azure, but he knew enough to not get his ass kicked. Eureka glanced at the carpet. "There's nothing wrong with simple, descriptive names, you know. That's how my tribe names people. My name, for example, means horse. A good, strong, dependable animal for a good, strong, dependable person. And healthy! Nothing wrong with that." "Eureka." "It means…blue." "Wow. Four whole syllables for blue. Though I guess you get some credit for not trying Bluey." Baltan rolled his eyes and took a long drink. How had he come to respect and admire this man so much, when he thought naming everything after what color it happened to be was a good idea? "Your lack of taste in names matches your lack of taste in fashion. Try again."

WTW Ghost Gala Day 1 - Pumpkin Carving
Pumpkin Carving: You have to kill off a character. Who do you choose?
Some of my books/WIPs already include character deaths in them, so I will answer this question hypothetically as "who would I, as a reader, expect to die, or who would make an interesting death?"
ALiCE: Christopher is living out a slasher film, one with shaky ties to reality as it is. It makes perfect sense for him to be the not-so final girl and end up dead at the end of it all, if he isn't already.
Like Falling Stars: This is a cozy fantasy, so technically no one should be expected to die here, but if the genre were shifted slightly to a darker fantasy then one of the faeries would probably be expected to kick the bucket and Nicolas be blamed for it. The truth of whether he is guilty or not would be a significant plot point for Ann to pursue.
Stellar Eclipse: There are so many characters that have nearly died in this series! Readers may be relieved to know that Baltan was once slated to be dead in a distant epilogue but has since been spared because I simply didn't have the heart to kill him off and make the planned ending any more bittersweet than it already is. If I was going to kill someone off for real, it would probably be Keida or another member of the Kwoltan Gera extended family.
The Alliance Saga: There are a few characters whose fates I know readers are anguishing over while they wait for the release date. Some deaths are already known. I will say that the one I am most eager to kill off...one of the main cast...WILL survive the first novel, Shifting Roots. No guarantee beyond that.
Familiar Ties: Would be interesting to see what would happen if either Ripley or Freyr were killed, given that the other (and their parents) would unleash an absolute bloodbath in vengeance for their beloved.

Alright, I'll bombard you with information about my WIP! I've been working on Stellar Eclipse forever, and I'm super excited that the first book will be available soon. It's an urban fantasy/crime thriller mixed with family drama elements, all set in a built-from-the-ground-up world. The plot focuses on two retired murder investigators trying to keep a traumatized child (and other potential victims) safe from a child-murdering cult now that their leader (who they caught) is out of prison.
Oh shit, this sounds super dark and intricate. I feel like the character dynamics under those circumstances would be incredible to read, and wonderfully complex. Feel free to tell me more!!
(Also damn, nice title!)
tell me about your wips / ocs!

WIP Wednesday is awesome! My WIP, Cloudless Rain, is a fantasy/mystery novel about two former murder investigators trying to stop a cult leader from murdering a whole bunch of kids, while harboring his main targets. It also has elements of family drama, which I really enjoy. It's the first book in the Stellar Eclipse series, which I have six novels and a "guidebook" planned for.

People with supernatural abilities in Stellar Eclipse's universe don't need items to use their abilities, but they are a lot stronger/clearer if they're near certain sacred sites. For the East, being in/near a temple, especially when it's for the specific deity they're trying to channel, helps a ton. Azures have a couple sacred spots scattered around that work all the time, and anywhere the stars are plainly visible at night can work (but only at nighttime).
Oh! Magical places? (Jots idea for future Magic Monday question.)
I like the idea of magic being tied to certain locations. It makes sense, too - if magic comes from a deity, wouldn’t it be logical that magic is clearer near a site close to that deity? Neat!
Magic Monday: Tell me about magic items in your WIP!(Full Post)

Character Voice Tag
Rules: Write the given line in a way that expresses your character's personality.
Thank you @willtheweaver for the line, "You’re seriously going to wear that?" I was trying to decide between the Like Falling Stars cast or the Stellar Eclipse cast, ultimately went for a blend of who I think would have the best answers lol.
Lleuwellyn (Stellar Eclipse): Oh, that's an...interesting choice. Very...brave? Bold. A bold choice. Ann (Like Falling Stars): *giggling* Baltan (Stellar Eclipse): No. Go change. Nicolas (Like Falling Stars): *not making direct eye contact* Please change into something more appropriate. Eureka (Stellar Eclipse): You look amazing! Where did you get that? I'll have to check it out some time.
I tag the following people (+ open tag) to write the line "Get off the table!" in character: @byjillianmaria @incandescent-creativity
@theboarsbride @abalonetea @albatris @adorhauer @esbarrison-writing
