Answering for Ask Game

So there's no denying this fic completely got away from me. It started as just a joke among friends that LWJ and JC could fall in love without saying a word to each other and we went through the idea of how they both built a routine around the other being in the same place in the library at a regular time until one day JC isn't there for some reason and LWJ completely freaks out that he'll never come back and he's lost him forever, so the next time he sees JC he just pounces and begs him to marry him.

That was what I intended to write, nice and short, but it quickly turned into a behemoth as I found so much fun and satisfaction in writing a rom-com where they get together early and have to work through those challenges. So here we are.

I've loved exploring JC and LWJ's mutual neuroses and taking them out of the high pressure environment of canon into a slightly less pressure environment of Modern College allows them to show through softer sides to them.

Obviously I started this fic literal years ago but I have been inspired since by other fics, like Bootless Cries which has ZC being so cute with each other, calling each other hedgehog and baby bird, which meant I've been trying to land on pet names for my version now that I actually like. I feel LWJ would go classic, like Xīngān "My heart and liver" and I'm leaning towards Dàxiōng "Big Bear" for JC to use for LWJ.

Where I am right now is mostly time line issues and pinning down where things go and in what order. It occurred to me today that what I might need to do is split the fic into two or three parts - like I did with For What, it's all one fic on Ao3 but broken into 3 arcs, because I think I've hit arc fatigue and I need to end one arc, where the relationship begins and has issues from people finding out about them, to a new arc where they're trying to find their feet as a long term couple, and then perhaps an arc to get them to the final scene in my head that I've had since the beginning. I've been trying to make all that 1 single arc and it isn't working, so I think it's time to try a new angle. I don't want to have a bunch of meandering chapters where I don't know where I'm going, as cute as stuff in them could be.

interesting question !!! momoko has herself a few friends, however none of them are a part of ZC or the arcade SEKAI.

it’s a bit complicated to pinpoint why exactly did she not consider inviting them, but the most likely reason is that she views the SEKAI + her band as her own private form of escapism. she simply does not consider those friends as someone she wants to see in that space.

Fun fact for the viewers at home: Zenith Code started out as a Harry Potter au fanfic. I took it down when Rowling lost my respect and revealed her TERF-y ways to the public. Now I’m revamping it into its own story. I never would’ve gotten the inspiration or courage to do so if I hadn’t observed fanfic writers publish their work. My characters were nothing like the HP ones, save some shared life events. I just… didn’t know how I could write original work and find people who’d enjoy it, so fanfic-writing was where I landed.

As a fun exercise, guess which of Harry Potter’s schoolmates received the mantle of which greek deity in my YA sci-fi book.

i will never complain about a book seeming like a fanfic with the serial numbers filed off because that means the author had the invaluable ability to tell when their au had diverged enough that these were just straight-up different characters now
