TRUTH: i saw you mention recently that witchview was originally a lot longer so i'm just curious what you cut out and/or what was the hardest thing to cut? - @witchywithwhiskey
Oh, Molly, this is a question that got my brain purring happily!
Tumblr media
So... this story was around 1800 words when I did the initial first pass, but the challenge was a 1300 word max, so I cut it nearly by a third.
Your wild Aspen can get verbose, right? 🙃
So initially I went through and looked for the over-writing, tried to say things in five words when I'd initially taken ten, etc. Details that were nice but not necessary. The easy fat to cut.
That got me far, but I still had a ways to go.
So what went?
Tumblr media
This absolute queen.
I adore the complexity of this character. I was fascinated by her in WandaVision and I can. not. wait. to see House of Harkness.
So when I came up with this witchy reader who was in Westview but had specifically stayed out of the Wanda and Agatha affairs, but then needing to work with the other witch in the wake of what Wanda left behind? in the first draft there was more in the narrative about that, and more conversations between Agatha and the reader, but I realized that this piece was about Steve and the Reader and not Agatha and the reader yet.
Yet.
This exists in a doc.
And after that, I still had a bit to trim, so every detail, every word, every turn of phrase was me honing hard down to the most essential pieces, so it felt like precious story. It felt so satisfying when I got it down to the 1300. It's not perfect, but it feels like pure unadulterated story.
And the bits I had to tuck away somewhere? They're not alone. There... are things... Maybe things this October?

💍- your most underrated story
Tumblr media
This one is tough, because when I look at stats, there are a couple that I sort of thought would get more love, but I think either they were too dark, lesser sought after characters, or they're stories that weren't that memorable for me even, just ones I did feel like I wanted to write at the time... But one of the stories that I adore the most that I think is underrated in the context of my library is Witchview! It's short - 1300 words for a Friday the 13th challenge - and so maybe that's why people didn't really pay it much attention? But I packed a lot of story into those 1300 words because when I was done with the first draft, it was around 1800 words, so I was meticulous in cutting the fat, precise word choice... and it's got a witchy!reader, which was fascinating to construct a story around!
Thank you for this ask, my dear Em!

❔Choose a random WIP and talk about it.
ok
so
honestly?
I wrote this little one-shot Witchview for @boxofbonesfic's Friday the 13th challenge last month (everyone should go pillage plunder and reblog from that collection because there is so much good stuff) and I really did write what I felt at the time was The Story. It was a 1300-word one-shot.
But then I keep thinking about it...
I'm thinking about the elaborate scenarios witchy!reader spun in her web of lies.
I'm thinking about how Steve takes everything in.
I'm thinking about whether or not he decides to help witchy!reader.
I'm thinking about whether or not he can trust her on any level.
Basically I think I want to write more.

Dealer's choice?
OKAY THEN!
Witchview
I wrote this for @boxofbonesfic's Friday the 13th challenge in January of this year, and... I can be verbose, especially when I'm determined to figure out a plot and a backstory, but I'm incredibly pleased with what I trimmed down to and put into the exactly 1300 words that the challenge pieces were limited to. There are a lot of details and extras that I shaved off, and yet I still felt like I achieved a richness and a plethora of intriguing layers.
Tumblr media
I loved taking the approach of a morally questionable witchy!reader, I loved tying her to happening to have been hanging around Westview and trying to stay under the radar, I loved making her inadvertently trapped, I loved making her have to work with Agatha... Because why was she there in the first place? Why did she try to stay out of the way of Wanda and Agatha? Why is she desperate to get out of Westview now when she was content there before? And she straight up targeted Steve for this complicated summoning ritual, so why him? The stakes are too high to just idly entangle and entrust her fate to Captain America without a complexity of reasoning and determining that he was the best option for what she was trying to achieve.
Also, we only see snippets of visitations 12 and 13 for her building that connection and relationship with Steve, so what else happened?
And of course there's how I ended it...
Like
I definitely wrote a cohesive one-shot that stands on its own, but straight up lying if I didn't admit that I got feedback after posting it that slipped the edge of that plot's box open again, and threads have been trickling out since then.

OMG! Witchview was fantastic!
Thank you, nonnie! The concept hit me and just clicked, and so when I got a chance to sit down and write, it just seemed to pour out and I LOVED that writing experience. They don’t always flow like that, but this one was special.
I really loved it, and I’m content that it’s one and complete in the one-shot that it is…
…and yet, I’ve been drawn back to more thoughts (and thots) about it over the last week. I think some more story may evolve there. No promises, but I am feeling a pull.

Witchview
Fandom: MCU
Characters/Pairings: Steve Rogers x witch!reader, Agatha Harkness
Word Count: trimmed right down to 1,300 exactly to fit the challenge (see below)
Summary: You wanted out before, but now you were compromised as the bait in your own trap and were becoming desperate for freedom. As he had said famously, the price of freedom was high. Desperation was dangerous. Desperation was fed by hope. Desperation erased the limits of reasonability. You had crossed lines, and you wouldn’t stop now.
Content Warnings: sexual situations (p in v), magic, sorcery, trickery…
Additional Notes: Written for the Friday the 13th challenge hosted by @boxofbonesfic. This one lives in the shadows rather than straight up dark… Another one or two hundred words I may have gotten it darker, but here we are.
A/N 2: Steve returned the stones and came back, because...that's what he did. Literally why would he have done anything else?
Tumblr media
Foreheads pressed together, he thrust into you again and again, the yearning engulfing both of you. He held himself over you, leaning on his forearms as if to cage you in, not knowing he was the one moving further into your elaborate trap.
“How can you feel so perfect beneath me?” he asked, reverent as a prayer.
Your heart burned, but you didn’t know what to say – you didn’t want to lie, but you were also unable to form coherent thoughts as you barreled towards your release – and you could not spare any focus elsewhere or risk breaking the spell. So instead, you tilted your head up and sought his lips again for a kiss.
He shifted his hips, hitting your sweet spot, and with a few more strokes, you shuddered and gasped, your orgasm rolling over you. With the clenching of your walls, he reached the peak of his own pleasure right after, and he came with a groan, spilling inside you.
He rolled off and to his side, pulling you into his chest, and you let yourself become wrapped up in him as your breaths mingled together and you came down from your highs.
He smiled then kissed you softly.
When he pulled back again to look at you, you concentrated everything on being in this moment. Nothing could be amiss as his blue eyes discerned almost everything.
“I’m so glad I found you,” he said.
It was you who found him, but he still needed to believe for this scene.
“I love you, Steve Rogers.”
“I love you, too.”
You brought your hand up to thread your fingers through his hair and then cup his cheek tenderly. “Sleep. I’ll see you in the morning.”
He hummed and dropped off, drifting out of consciousness. You spent a few more moments whispering into his ear, planting more sentiments of devotion you needed him to absorb.
You lurched awake, pulling yourself from the dreamscape. It was taxing to project, and your lungs gulped in fresh air.
With your return, the thirteen candles around you had extinguished immediately. You sat up and pressed the heels of your hands to your eyes, furiously wiping away traitorous tears that had appeared, glad for the dimness in the chamber so your companion could not see.
This would soon come to an end. You needed it to be over. You never wanted to be this invested. He was supposed to be a mark, you drawing him in, not the other way around.
And you needed him to come to you.
To Westview.
The town had been your temporary home before the other two witches appeared and shattered it.
The chaos magic that drew Agatha to Westview was something you’d also felt immediately and wanted to flee, but the boundaries set up by Wanda – one of the first elements of the enchantment – meant you were trapped in the anomaly before you could realize you needed to escape.
Unlike the rest of the citizens, you knew.
You didn’t know everything, but your own magic kept you immune from the hypnotic spell. You knew enough to play along, bide your time, figure out what you needed to when you needed to. Agnes-then-Agatha inserted herself, and you observed, gleaned what you could, kept your head down. You let them play things out.
Once Wanda was gone, you wished to be, too.
As Agatha was trapped, you were, too.
The other citizens had been freed from the anomaly and their lives had returned to normal, but Wanda had bound magic folk to this town, inadvertently caging you in as well, unaware of the unrevealed witch in hiding.
As much as you avoided awakening Agatha from her Nosy Neighbor punishment, you came to terms quickly that you would need another witch to unravel the magical cage and escape.
It had been a feat to get her out, but together you had been able to break the restrictions of the runes and use your magic freely again. The runes had been cast hastily and while Wanda was engaged in battle with Agatha, her focus split.
However, she’d been able to create the magical cage to bind witches to the town without any distraction, and it seemed short of the Sorcerer Supreme or the Scarlett Witch herself, you may never be able to break the enchantment and get out.
You and Agatha had determined you would need someone who – despite and in many ways because of his goodness – would make the world burn for those who mattered most to them.
He may have passed on his shield to someone else, but Steve Rogers would never be able to ignore his heart, and the aim was that he would become an unstoppable force on his quest to set you free. The chances of convincing the powers you needed on the outside to come to your aid were nonexistent otherwise.
With care you had crafted the thirteen candles to commune with the soul of another.
Used individually or only in small groups, they were relatively safe. Burning all at once, thirteen communion candles were incredibly powerful and increasingly dangerous the longer they burned, and you were burning them together and nearly to the end of their wicks to achieve an illusion strong enough to enchant the super soldier. Thirteen candles could simulate reality. But they also could attract demons, ghouls, and spirits, requiring you and Agatha to continue working together – her standing watch while you went under.
You knew she was studying you now.
“Remember, he’s a means to an end.”
You turned your head to meet her gaze, unflinching. “It takes a lot to invest in making the illusion real with someone like him.”
She arched her brows. “I’m not judging you if you’re falling for him.”
You sighed. “He’s intoxicating.”
“Don’t get distracted and mess up. I know you don’t care about trapping me here, but if I’m stuck, so are you, which means no reality with Prince Charming.”
“I know.”
“The candles only burn for thirteen hours, and-“
“I know, Agatha!”
You closed your eyes for a moment and took a deep breath.
“I know.”
Agatha sighed, then stepped closer and briefly touched your shoulder. “I know you do.”
This trust between you was only temporary, but it was something for now, and the small gesture helped to rebuild your focus.
You laid back down. “I’m ready.”
“You’re sure?”
“We’re limited on time with him, too.”
One night. You’d projected yourself into his dreams twelve times in one night, creating scenes, memories, a relationship that needed to be undeniable because now you weren’t going to visit him in a dream. For your thirteenth and final visit, you were going to project to him in his waking state, and either succeed or fail.
“Light the candles.”
You closed your eyes and began your own incantation while she repeated hers to ignite the flames and fortify the protection spells.
You stood at the counter, watching the soft morning light begin to illuminate the branches outside the window, waiting for him.
Soon enough, you heard his footsteps coming down the hallway, and then he entered the kitchen behind you. You turned toward him and smiled – it wasn’t forced or fake because that’s just what he elicited from you now. He returned it, but maybe not for much longer.
“Good morning, sweetheart,” he greeted, reaching for you, but his face faltered as his fingers failed to find purchase.
“Sweetheart?”
“It’s not real,” you started. He would believe you either way – you knew that from everything you had studied about him beforehand, and all your manipulations tonight only confirmed that – but what you didn’t know was if that belief would feel betrayed or be driven to devotion.
“What?”
“This isn’t real,” you reiterated, “but it can be.”

Aspen's Dark Forest Fest
Tumblr media
Well, dear ghosts, ghouls, and goblins, we hit the 1200 follower milestone this past week, and so I decided to pull a little something together to celebrate - and as it's spooky season, I leaned into that.
Each day for the rest of the month I'm going to drop some tricks or treats! Some days I will highlight a story I wrote that features creatures or magic and share the thoughts still haunting me about that story and open my askbox to questions about that story OR I will post something new that I'm working on - a frightful tale that has been brewing in my brain for many months now.
October 22: haunting thoughts on Silent Screams in Wildest Dreams
October 23: haunting thoughts on Sacrificial
October 24: haunting thoughts on hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have
October 25: new frightful tale Warm Shadows: When You Fall On Me Like Night
October 2627: haunting thoughts on Sedition: Unrest
October 27: haunting thoughts on Can't Be Forgotten
November 7: new frightful tale Warm Shadows: Let All Light Go
November 28: haunting thoughts on Do You Remember?
October 30: haunting thoughts on Witchview

💕 Self-love time! Talk about which ones of YOUR creations (edits, artworks, fanfics) you enjoy the most, for whatever reason. Send to other creators to do the same if you wish. 💕
NAVY, MY DEAR, THANK YOU for the ask! I received it this morning, but after the day I had, I definitely need a little self-love, so I'm so grateful this was waiting for me...
First is my Cedar Trees Collection that features a Royal!Rogers x Royal!Reader arranged marriage. I wrote the first story for it in December over just a day or two, and I remember just feeling very connected to the story - where I was setting it, the transitions of tone I wanted to show, and what I felt like was a less-frequently seen display of the royal-arranged-marriage trope? I very much fell for this Steve and these two. One of the reasons this became even more dear to my heart was that I about fainted when @writing-for-marvel popped out of nowhere sprinkling the fic with hearts as well, and my chest was fit to burst. I wrote the second story when she requested it for my 300 follower request fest, and I was excited to build out more story for these two but a bit nervous that I wouldn't be able to take it where I wanted to and have it be a piece that could proudly be paired with the original, but then I feel like it did come out how I hoped. There are a few more pieces I want to write for them, but I'm putting absolutely no pressure or deadlines on writing them because I adore them too much.
Second is Witchview which is a 1300-word Steve x witchy!Reader story I wrote for @boxofbonesfic's Friday the 13th Challenge last January. I feel like I was challenged by and conquered packing a complicated story with the essential elements while also building the background, including some setting elements, and really moving through from beginning to end giving pieces but also baking some intrigue/mystery into just 1300 words.
Third is Sacrificial, the Minotaur!Bucky x Reader dark terato fic that I stayed up all night to write a few weeks ago. That was... Mmmph. I just. That Saturday I needed monster smut and shouted/pouted at @rookthorne about it and 10 hours later had spit out 3.5k I was wickedly proud of.
I'm honestly writing a lot of things that my mind really is in love with right now/lately and that is so satisfying. I'm really grateful for that because I've loved writing since I was a teen and I haven't written for years, so to be living in my writing era again... it's so fulfilling and I am eager to share things coming up and still dying any time anyone leaves even half a comment reblog about liking one of my stories, too.

I’ve got quite a few muses mulling around, but none of them are particularly DEMANDING right now. But I’m traveling this weekend and have a few free days off of work next week, so I want to get going and prod one or two of these muses…

This year has been so significant to me!
I got a huge promotion that I'd been working toward for so long, and it's stretched me in new ways. It's still tough, but I love what I'm doing - or at least trying to do. Some unexpected personnel issues have put some of my projects on hold, but that's also been part of the growth journey.
I met so many wonderful people this year through our affectionate hellsite - some of whom have become dear, treasured friends, and truly enriched my life. I'm NOT going to name names - you know who you are, and many of you hate public attention, so I'm not going to put you on display. There's also no way I could convey to everyone who has touched my life in some way that you have - people who have sent me asks, messages, even left the smallest comment on a reblog, and some of you silent but serial rebloggers I SEE YOU, TOO! There were days when a message or comment truly turned around how I was feeling.
So if I can be sentimental over that for a moment, please never hold back the kindness of saying something nice to someone. We all need more love and kindness, every single one of us.
And, lastly, I've written more than I've ever written before - even in my former fandom days! I wrote 89k words over 48 stories, chapters, and drabbles (doesn't include all the asks). In 2022, I set out to write more again after not having written anything for years, so to be doing so much of what I love and being able to say I reclaimed my hobby as a writer again feels amazing. To have support around my writing is truly humbling and also so damn fun.
And so to close out 2023, I want to be a little bit proud and share my favorite things that I wrote this year: ↠ CEDAR TREES royal AU King Steve x Queen Reader collection ↠ DEVOUR mob AU soft!dark Bucky x female Chef Reader series ↠ Sacrificial Minotaur!Bucky x female scientist!Reader (modern AU) ↠ Witchview Steve x Witch Reader ↠ Meet Cute modern au Trader Joe's!Bucky x female Reader ↠ Warm Shadows, pt. 1 and pt. 2. Alpha!Bucky x f!Reader, Dark Alpha!Steve x f!Reader
Thank you, all of you.

ask game list
THANK YOU FOR THE ASKS, EM! I may or may not have gotten carried away with the answers...
💜- top 3 favorite lines: THIS WAS HARD AND EASY. Sometimes I'll know if a particular
“In future you kneel for only me, no one else.” from Consort Namor x Reader, smut, post Wakanda Forever ....this line iykyk AND I KNEW WHAT I WAS DOING WHEN I WROTE THAT
“Maybe I was tired of better. Maybe I decided I wanted easy. Besides, some of this is so much better.” from The Ashes In My Wake dark!Daredevil x Reader, non-con smut
“You can’t stop me from getting what I want, and this world has already taken so much from you, so why not get something you want?” from hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have dark!Wanda, Bucky x Reader, non-con/dub-con smut
....and sometimes I don't write smut, but honestly I guess I mostly always write plot with smut or smut adjacent
OH WELL
💻- three works of yours that are must reads
Witchview [1.3k] Reader insert (witch!reader), Steve stays in the present after Endgame, post-WandaVision, smut, magic, manipulation, dark-ish This I had the concept just spring up and fall out of my head REALLY quickly, and it was so fun to explore. It was for a 1300-word challenge, so wrestling down the word count while trying to maintain all the plot I needed to get across was difficult but satisfying. Aaaaand I may or may not be actively working on fleshing it out into an entire saga with the before and after.
Fire Burning from a Cedar Tree [3.4k] Reader insert, king!Steve, Royal AU, smut, fluff Writing this one was very immersive for me as I tried to convey a very particular narrative that I wanted to convey specific emotional moments with. And it was another one that moved along very quickly once I'd conceived the idea.
The Brooklyn Boys [12-part drabble/one-shot series] Reader insert, Steve, Bucky, fluff You know when Infinity War came out and then those of us who were in the fandom at that time had to wait A WHOLE YEAR to find out WHAT IN THE FREAKING HELL WAS GOING TO HAPPEN but now no one ever has to fully suffer that ever again? This series was kind of like that. It was the first stuff I wrote and posted to create this blog and start being part of fandom again, and I knew exactly what was going to happen in all 12 parts, and there's a Particular Plot Point reveal that once it happened, the comments I got were OMG I WASN'T EXPECTING THAT BUT OF COURSE. But now that it's all published, there's no real avoiding it without sacrificing the practice of properly tagging everything appropriately (which I wholeheartedly support).
⭐️- how do you get your inspiration?
Songs, prompt lists, challenges, watching or reading something that spawns me to start playing around with an idea for something else... I have a very analytical mind but with lots of creative energy, so almost anything can inspire me. It's definitely more to do with whether or not I have the mental capacity to dedicate to creative projects or not. My undergrad was English with emphasis in Creative Writing (my uni you had to pick Creative Writing, Non-Fiction, or Poetry for a focus) and once I was done with my last year in particular, I'd had to put so much concentration into writing projects that I was done for like eight months, just needed a rest. A year later I moved from a part-time job into a full time position that also necessitated a move to a new town, so between trying to learn a new job, I was also trying to build a new life, get settled into a new apartment, and by the time I started having free mental energy again, it was around the time I also needed to start considering a graduate degree, so that then took up ALL my extra time for two years, and I had reading/writing burnout again after that.
My early fandom days I did a lot of missing scenes/alternate scenes/background characters/rare pairings stuff, "what if" fics, sequel fics, and in HP dove heavy into Marauder Era stuff. Now it's pretty driven in there being so much open to play with in the MCU fandom from the gamut of "missing scenes"/moments between films to fix it to fill the time between now and the next film to just pure AU exploration because I'm enthralled by some of the characters that it's just... idk. Some writers will probably always be more popular and gain followings more easily than me because they can hone in and do one things (whether it's a character or a genre or a fandom) really well and maybe by not splitting their focus so much can tame the muse a little more easily to be able to write more consistently for their readers...
But I adore exploring so many different ideas, and for me the ebb and flow of different muses and plot bunnies I think helps me to stay motivated long term, because some thought while I'm driving or in the grocery store or folding laundry will pull me back to the writing in general, and I'm less likely to get stuck trying to figure out one thing.
