My favorite aspect of The Sopranos is that neither Carmela nor Tony truly give a shit about what their kids want--they extol the same old traditions they grew up with: go to Church, God is real and you love Him, go to a good college, but you can see in real time that they disobey and openly challenge these notions (moreso Meadow) and they get angry when they establish any form of independence. One such example is when Meadow wanted to go Berkeley college than the one her parents wanted her to go to. What did Carmela do? She threw it in the garbage and hid it.

Or the time when AJ starts to ask questions about God and the meaning of life in front of his parents. They just got upset and declared that God is real.

Better yet, in season 3 when AJ starts acting out in school because of his spoiled behavior and growing rebellious streak, Tony tries to ship him off to a military school. Carmela sees the school as indoctrinating young men into soldiers--someone who mindlessly follows orders, like Tony's mob crew. Tony wants him to act like a man and learn some discipline by having him act like a soldier.

Part of me thinks the great part of that scene in particular is that we, the audience, know that Tony sees himself in AJ. He expressed to Melfi in S1 that he knows the way he grew up wasn't healthy and he doesn't want that for his son. Yet here he is, angrily declaring that AJ needs to toughen up by way of following orders from someone in a position of authority, be it his parents or drill sergeant. And he doesn't even know what he's doing to his son.

What's even better is that AJ has a panic attack, rendering him unfit for the military school. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Anyways, 4$ a pound.

because i have ONE DAY . of a reading day before my exams start. they start tomorrow . saturday and sunday are also reading days but i feel like having 3 reading days, 2 of which midway through finals week is crazy
