Tumblr Exclusive Bonus Episode: The Rescue
"Caleb!" Evelyn rushed forward when she saw the witch hunters grab Caleb, but he had just enough time to shove her backwards before getting overwhelmed. She fell hard on her side of the portal, and couldn't recover before he was completely pinned down by the angry mob.
She sat stunned for a few moments, unable to fully comprehend what had just happened.
"If the others find out about you they will kill you, they'll probably kill both of us."
"They would kill you just for spending time with me?"
"I don't know, but if they thought I was corrupted, it's likely."
Their conversation from all those years ago rang through Evelyn’s head.
They were going to kill him.
They were going to kill him and it was all Evelyn’s fault.
It took Flapjack pulling her hair to snap her out of her daze.
She needed to save him! But she couldn't do it on her own. Flapjack transformed into a staff and Evelyn sped towards Jasper’s dormitory. She pounded on the door until it opened.
"Evie?" Jasper answered the door. "What's wrong?"
"They took him! They took Caleb! He just got through the portal and they were waiting for him! I tried to help but there was nothing I could do! And now, oh Titan! Now they've got him! They'll kill him! They're going to kill him!"
"Evelyn, slow down," Jasper said. "Slow down, breathe."
He wrapped his arms around her, she was shaking.
"They're going to kill him." She sobbed. "They're going to kill him and it's all my fault."
"Caleb's in trouble?" Becks asked, rubbing sleep from their eyes.
"We have to help him!" Evelyn insisted, "You have to help me, please!"
"We will." Jasper said. "Of course we will. But we can't just rush in. We need a plan."
"We also should make sure there is even a point in risking it…" Becks added.
"Of course there is a point! He's our friend! If it were one of us he would…"
"That's not what I meant, Evie. If there is a chance of saving him, no matter how small, we will take it. Of course we will. But…he's told us about the witch hunters, they are swift to act. It might already be too late."
Evelyn’s heart twisted at those words.
"No! No, it can't be!" Tears flooded her eyes. She knew Becks was right, but she hated them for saying it.
Jasper wrapped his arms around his sister. "Send Flapjack to do some reconnaissance. We can come up with a plan while he figures out whether or not Caleb is still…you know…"
Evelyn was shaking. She couldn't allow herself to imagine that Caleb might be dead already. She thought back to when she had witnessed that poor old woman get murdered all those years ago. She thought of Caleb dying the same way…killed by those he once trusted…she couldn't bear it.
She sobbed into Jasper’s shoulder. He rubbed her back. After a long, long time, Flapjack returned. He flew right into Evelyn’s hands and reported back what he had found out. Evelyn let out a sob as he finished.
Becks and Jasper looked at her expectantly.
"Is he…?" Jasper asked.
"He's still alive for now." Evelyn replied. "H-he…he's in bad shape, but he's still alive. They're going to put him on trial, but…if he's found guilty they'll…" she broke off, unable to finish the sentence. "He doesn't want us to come after him. He says it's too big of a risk and…" she nearly broke, "he told Flapjack to tell me he loves me. And asked me to have a good life…" She couldn't maintain any composure after that, she crumpled completely into Jasper’s arms, sobbing so hard it made her chest ache. He had given up. He wanted her to give up on him.
"Alright." Becks said, they took out a large piece of paper and spread it across the desk. "So, let's make a plan. First things first, we need to know the terrain. Both of you have been to the Human Realm, right? Do you think you could draw a map?"
"Wait, when were you there?" Evelyn asked.
"A long time ago, it doesn't matter. You're a better artist, why don't you do it?"
Evelyn hadn’t been to the human realm in three years, but she did her best to plot out the important locations. Flapjack helped her when she couldn't remember, he also helped her fill in the inside of the settlement where she had never been.
"Let’s not make a move until we know the results of the trial." Jasper said. "If we don't need to intervene it will be safer for us and Caleb. I can have Rigby listen in and tell us the result. We can hide out nearby so we can react quickly if we have to."
"Flapjack should do it, he knows the fort."
"I'm sure he does, I'm also sure that after all these years people have undoubtedly noticed him and connected him with Caleb. There's no chance of anyone recognizing Rigby. Besides, he's faster than Flapjack."
Flapjack indignantly piped up that he was not.
"If we do have to act, it will have to be quick." Becks said, "We will need a big distraction."
"I don't want to risk hurting anyone." Evelyn said, "Caleb has friends in the settlement, and his little brother."
"We can primarily use illusions." Jasper said, "we're all fairly good at them. We can duplicate ourselves and attack from the sky. That should cause enough confusion."
"That won't be enough," Evelyn said, "if they see us coming towards Caleb they could guard him. We need to do something so big it causes confusion on multiple fronts."
"Do you have something in mind?" Becks asked.
"Yes, but I don't think I'll be able to pull it off on my own. I'm going to need Zipporah."
"We are not dragging Zip into this, no way. I don't even like the idea of you coming along, I just know trying to talk you out of it will be a waste of time and breath."
"I don't want to bring her in either, but she is a better illusionist than all of us combined."
"Evelyn is right, Jaz." Argued Becks. "I've seen what Zipporah can do, having someone with that amount of talent come along will make it safer for all of us, and increase the likelihood of success."
Jasper glared at Becks, clearly feeling betrayed.
"Fine." He finally agreed, "but I will only agree to bringing her along if you and her stay hidden outside the fort. Beck and I will be the ones to take any actual risk. And if something goes wrong, you get yourselves out. You forget about us, you forget about Caleb, you get yourself and Zip to safety. Agreed?"
Evelyn didn't respond right away.
"Agreed?!" Jasper pressed.
"Alright." Evelyn replied. She would absolutely not honor the agreement if push came to shove. Once she crossed over into the Human Realm, she was not leaving without Caleb. If that meant she ended up hanging beside him, then at least they would die together. She told as much to Flapjack as she waited outside her brother's dormitory waiting for Jasper and Beck to quickly dress.
"If Jasper and Becks fail, bring Zipporah home, okay? I won't abandon Caleb, it's my fault he is in this mess, I won't let him die alone."
Flapjack protested.
"Please, Flapjack. Hopefully it won't come to that, but if it does, I need to know my sister will be safe."
Reluctantly Flapjack agreed. She could feel his sorrow. He was already feeling guilty that he couldn't help Caleb, Evelyn knew it was cruel to ask this of him, but she had made up her mind. She would not live without Caleb, but she had to protect Zipporah.
Flapjack and Rigby took shifts spying on Grave Field until they were able to figure out the exact time of the trial, which was to be the following day at noon, they continued to watch the settlement just in case something happened.
Meanwhile, Evelyn filled Zipporah in on what was happening, unsurprisingly, Zipporah was more than eager to join her siblings on the rescue mission. Together the four of them went over their plan, revised it, and reviewed it again, over and over until they all felt confident they could recite it in their sleep. They only had one chance, failure could mean death. It had to be perfect.
Evelyn woke Zipporah early the next day and they met Becks and Jasper at the portal.
"This is it," Becks said. "Are you ready?"
"Ready as we'll ever be." Evelyn said. Her insides were so twisted at the moment it was all she could do not to vomit.
She opened the portal and they all stepped through. Becks and Zipporah looked around in wide-eyed wonder.
Evelyn let Jasper and Becks pull ahead before turning to Zipporah. She handed her the vial of Titan’s Blood.
"If something goes wrong, you take this, take Flapjack, and get yourself home. Understand?"
"What about you?" Zipporah asked.
"Don't worry about me. I know where to find more Titan’s Blood in this realm, you don't. I will meet up with you later."
Zipporah clung to Evelyn, burying her face in Evelyn’s chest. "Everything is going to be okay, right?"
"Of course." Evelyn said, "I just want to make sure you're safe. What we're about to do is dangerous. I want to make sure you don't get hurt. It's better to have a plan and not need it than to need it and not have it, right?"
Zipporah nodded. Together, the group of four crept through the forest until the settlement was in sight.
"Okay, Rigby is going to watch the trial for us." Jasper said, "let's rest here until we know the results."
"If he's found guilty, that's the tree they'll bring him to." Evelyn said, pointing to the place where she watched the angry mob murder the old woman. Her heart was beating so hard she thought it might break her chest. She was shivering, trying her very hardest not to imagine Caleb swinging from the branches. Zipporah took her hand and squeezed it. Jasper put his hand on her shoulder.
"We won’t let him die." Jasper promised.
Evelyn nodded, unable to speak around the lump in her throat. Jasper insisted on going over the plan one more time as they waited. Minutes passed like hours. Finally, Rigby came tearing out of the fort. He cawed to Jasper before transforming into a staff. Evelyn didn't need to ask the verdict, it was clear from the look on Jasper’s face.
"Alright." Jasper said. "This is it. We have one chance. Remember, wait until he is outside the fort."
Evelyn and Zipporah both nodded.
"Good luck." Zipporah said.
"You too," Becks replied.
As Becks and Jasper flew off, Evelyn and Zipporah took up their positions. Evelyn felt sick with nerves. After waiting for what felt like forever, Caleb finally appeared from the settlement, even from a distance Evelyn could see he was in bad shape, but he walked with his head held high, despite the ropes binding his hands behind his back or the blood stains on his shirt.
Evelyn and Zipporah worked together to draw a giant spell circle and together they created the biggest illusion either of them had ever seen…
