(Spoiler warning for books 11 and beyond) HiveWings: plothole or propaganda?
I have a theory. What if HiveWings aren’t really all descended from ClearSight? Clearly none of them have defining NightWing traits like NightWing powers, stars under their wings, or anything like that. This could just be due to the traits being bred out, but it’s a whole tribe, and they all have the same lack of obvious NightWing traits, despite being descended from a NightWing? No. Another problem with this idea is the lack of any major problems stemming from the horrific amount of incest that this would imply. So, what’s my theory?
Here’s what I think: when ClearSight arrived on Pantala, she saved both resident tribes- BeetleWings and LeafWings, from certain death. Everyone was impressed, and she was treated like a queen. Many of the BeetleWings disliked her though, and found her constant warnings to be condescending. They moved to the centre of the continent, the Savanna. The ClearSight supporters started to become more fond of black scales, like ClearSight’s, and yellow scales, like SunStreak’s. The offshoot tribe, meanwhile, hated this development and wanted nothing to do with it. They became the SilkWings, evolving separately. The BeetleWings kept growing as a tribe, and evolved into HiveWings. They wanted more power though, so they started spreading rumours that all HiveWings were descended from ClearSight, and put out propaganda depicting ClearSight as some kind of deity, watching over their futures from the past. A deity who looked a lot like a HiveWing.
ClearSight warned against all of this corruption in the book of ClearSight, but one of the earliest known HiveWing queens tore out those pages, rewriting the end to say that they were all her descendants. This also goes into why the bookbinding looked so wrong, as Hazel said.

Daily dragon!! Hazel <3
I've been rereading the series in order to have a more qualitative understanding of the material (I'm even annotating it. Technically. With a friend.) and I got to book 13 the other day
And the description of her curled up with a book made me giggle since I was doing the same thing. So I figured I'd draw her doing just that!! x3

she so tiny! I love how you made Sequoia so massive because like… she is at least 55. In WoF that would make her huge. Nobody draws her like that and I love this!

soooo this was meant to be part of a challenge where I draw every wof character but I'm not too happy with how it turned out + I think I want to take it into a different direction
so enjoy a Hazel! I always imagine her with glasses so she has glasses now (I also like to think SapWings and PoisonWings are distinct variations of LeafWings, with the former being more tree like)

wof ships i ship graph. dif color = dif ship. will update throughout the times o7
plain text for key =
(squiggly line) = "qpr"
(a pi symbol with three separated lines forming a triangle around it) = "poly"
(straight line) = "romantic"
(squiggle and line on top of eachother) = "either qpr or romantic"
(three scribbles of descending opactity) = "low opacity = ship less"
"? = considering"
I LOVE polycules. those dragons are so polyamorous like to charge reblog to cast
The whole qibli-winter section is kinda confusing so the ships are:
qinter, qinterwatcher, qinterwatcherjou, umbli, i also vaguely ship winterwatcher but forgot to mark it
ughhh blicketdewlowdrakejou the dreadful polycule ,,, my dearests !!

(I didn’t give many of them markings or scale patterns, because the drawings are focused on their outfits)

Some WoF Culture Headcannons:
MudWings:
Heavily farming and ranching based infrastructure
Since they’re right between the RainWings/NightWings, SeaWings, and SkyWings, the swamps are a huge trade center
They trade leathers and wheat with other tribes
HUGE feasts for celebrations
A holiday called Beef Fest (shortened from “Day of Many Cattle”) that is the anniversary of a mythical day where there were supposedly twice as many cows in the fields as there were the night before
Celebrated with a huge, tribe-wide feast of beef cooked in every way imaginable
The more silks and beads a MudWing has on, the higher ranked they are and bracelets show their rank within their troop (one for every younger sibling, and BigWings wear one big bangle-type bracelet with all of their siblings’ names engraved in it
Every troop has to build their own den. This serves as a sort of coming of age ceremony for them all and provides adequate housing for the tribe
Dragonets sleep in one big den on animal furs designated for different troops
Actually somewhat religious (probably worshiping the swamps or something of the like, and some voodoo-type beliefs and practices) and have designated priests and witch-doctors that hold ceremonies and pray for good harvest
SeaWings:
Semi-religious (worshiping the ocean and thanking her for their meals)
Very superstitious (mainly about sea spirits and ghosts, but some of them (mostly dragonets) believe in sea monsters)
Its extremely taboo to pierce any of their fins except the ones on their face that aren’t the main one down their spine, because some dragons pierced the wrong spot and couldn’t detect movements in the water as well as before (which the SeaWings (who don’t know anything about how their bodies actually work) interpreted as “the ocean’s mad at us for piercing our fins and is trying to kill us”)
…which of course means that a few modern rebels will pierce their spinal fins to look edgy
OCEAN PRIESTESSES who speak to the ocean and tell the future with whale bones
They have a few holidays: Dolphin Day (the day that the dolphin migration passes over the Deep Palace and they all go out to meet them), the day they test for animuses (they all get off of work/ school and have a big feast where they adorn the newly discovered animuses in strings of pearls and lapis to display their new rank), and the Arts Festival (self-explanatory)
Status is shown by how many pearls and fish bones (mostly for priestesses) they wear as jewelry and how much red fabric they wear (because they don’t have the stuff for red dyes, so they have to trade for it)
Wrap their dead in blue or green fabrics with bags of sand and sink them into a trench
For weddings, they perform a special dance together with red ribbons tying their talons together
RainWings:
Not much in the way of status, but merchants wear lots of silks and the queen traditionally wears lots of beads and jewelry (mostly just so people know which one she is)
Very good at making silk
Amazing craftsmen and architects
There are a few dragons whose whole jobs are carrying around the pieces of a canopy and perch for the royal family (they can get it up and down in a matter of minutes)
No real religion, but they do believe that Jaguars are some sort of all knowing spirit (Glory, of course, told them it was ridiculous, but even she was a little skeptical when one saved her from a snake while Deathbringer was distracted by eyeing a bird suspiciously) and even when they were carnivores, anyone who harmed a Jaguar for any reason was banished
They have lots of annual parties but not really any holidays
Big, cheerful funerals
Weddings are full of flowers, and the ceremonies consist of synching their scales in rippling patterns, and playing games together
NightWings:
Three goddesses named after the moons who are sisters
Perception is the goddess of the mind and grants mind reading
Oracle is the goddess of time and grants prophecy (obviously)
Imperial is the goddess of power and can grant either to her whim
The queen must be christened by the light of the three moons and wears three silver earrings that symbolize each of the moons. They believe that if a queen is unworthy, she will be blinded by the light (one time, a new queen somehow managed to get something in her eyes and was executed) (there were many NightWings who only accepted Glory as queen after she underwent the ceremony)
Three priestesses (one for each goddess and wear the silver earring for their goddess) who are dragonesses with the powers of each (mind reading for perception, prophesy for Oracle, and both for Imperial) and if there aren’t any available in time, a princess (for Imperial) or the daughters of the previous priestess of Oracle and Perception (priestesses of Imperial are sworn to maidenhood) (this is what they did on the volcano
Silver is a status symbol
In the old kingdom, there were entire institutes dedicated to star mapping
Mainly trade with knowledge, since they don’t really make anything
On the volcano, obsidian was farmed and used to trade with other tribes in case they needed to. They occasionally send teams to the volcano now to get what they can
A holiday celebrating three full moons where they focus on the dragonets hatched that night
Burn the dead
Wedding ceremonies are blessed by Imperial and the betrothed are covered in strings of star-shaped silver and they wear matching moonstone accessories (usually horn rings or tail bangles)
SandWings:
Originally nomadic until some MudWings came and helped them build towns, but some dragons chose to maintain their traditions
Mainly cactus and spice-based diet, so they have rooftop farms for them
In inter-tribal settlements (Sanctuary and Possibility) they are commonly mail carriers because of their lower need for food and water
Religion wise, they have a goddess named Mapapra who is the goddess of the desert (travelers pray to her for safe passage across the dunes), Naso (god of water, who they pray to for their sparse rainfall, and to keep the oasis water clean), and Nocabe god of harvest
There are a few traveling priests for each of the gods, who mainly just do ceremonies
SandWings LOVE ceremonies, so they do things like meditation and burning incense. The Scorpion Den is a myriad of smells
Whenever they get rain, a festival is held and everyone gets off of work and had a huge feast outside of the gates of the royal palace
They love spices
Festivals are common and music is a huge part of their culture
On the opposite end of the spectrum from SeaWings, SandWings use pierced frills to show status/lineage/achievements (for example, Sunny wears one rose-gold (the metal associated with SandWings) hoop (symbolic of a mother) and a silver (NightWing) stud (father) for her hybrid status, and a golden and obsidian chain from her left ear to the middle of her frill to show that she’s a princess)
They bury their dead in the sand
Weddings are musical and lively. The newlyweds twine their tails together and sing a traditional duet
IceWings
The most hygienic of the tribes
As stated in the books, they worship “the first egg”, but the also have Panagkhal, god of fish (the fishing villages pray to him for plentiful fish in their next haul), Yeloa, goddess of snow, and her sister, Nieba, goddess of ice
The more they wear, the higher their rank (especially after Snowfall destroys the rankings)
Polar bear fur is a sign of priests
No holidays or big celebrations
Ceremonies include everyone jumping in the ice fishing holes for a good haul of fish, and meditating in the middle of a blizzard
Believe that naming a dragonet after someone will make them like that dragon (like naming dragonets after honorable animuses and not naming them Arctic or the names of other traitors). This is why there are a lot of repeats in names (lots of queens named Diamond)
Very traditionally aligned
Obsessed with diamonds
Refuse to teach dragonets about anything other than tradition until they can perform the most complex ceremonies by memory alone
When two IceWings are wed, the ceremony is nothing if not elegant. They hold hands and recite ancient oaths, surrounded by falling snow
SkyWings:
Not religious, but very spiritual
They use rings to show their social status (for example, the royalty have four horn rings and queens have rings on their wings with strings of gems between)
There are sky monks that meditate on the tops of mountains and make wards and charms from bird feathers and gemstones
Can’t farm on the mountains, but they’re wonderful shepherds
They mostly trade with the SeaWings (red dyes/fabrics for fish and artwork)
They manufacture wool and wool products for trade with other tribes
Usually inter-tribal messengers, but they prefer to use trained birds to send messages within the tribe
Their only holiday is Ancestors’ Day, where they set up massive shrines for dead loved ones and perform a big dance together to honor them
Weddings are overseen by monks, and the spouses wear rings they made for each other
SilkWings (mostly pre-Tree Wars):
They used to have bridges and hammocks connecting the trees together
They had little groves of fruit trees that they farmed (mostly so they could be semi-independent from the LeafWings) in the north and south of the continent
They had a bi-annual holiday called Migration Day, where they all packed up their favorite things and flew to the north in the summer and the south in the winter to tend the farms there and escape the cold weather
Much of their culture was forgotten after the Tree Wars, but a few elders stubbornly uphold traditions
There were entire groups of trees dedicated to housing chrysalises
They celebrate their sixth birthday twice: once on their actual birthday, and once when they’ve finished metamorphosis
Their schools were on the forest floor to accommodate wingless dragonets
Status was shown by gemstones decorating their wings
They wrap their dead in their mourners’ silk and burn it with Flamesilk. They call this the final metamorphosis
For weddings, the spouses are left in solitude to braid their silks together into matching bracelets symbolic of their relationship
HiveWings:
Like NightWings, they mainly trade knowledge and expertise with a few manual laborers scattered around
They love to travel and learn about other tribes, so a lot of them are traveling medics, teachers, and anthropologists
Also in the strain of travel, they take keepsakes from wherever they’ve been to put in showrooms and foyers to impress guests
Their favorite things to get from the Pyrrhian tribes are wool cloaks from the SkyWings and obsidian from the NightWings
They love to organize things: jobs, houses, family units, troops
They love it so much that they have a whole holiday about it, where they take off from work and school to empty their homes of everything they don’t use anymore and reorganize the whole place
Dragonets’s skills (strength, ability and willingness to learn, natural talent) are assessed very early so that they can be taught in the best way possible
After the SilkWings are freed, they offer medical expertise and help with organizing others’ homes
Pre-Tree Wars, they lived in hollowed out trees and mountain caves
Status is shown by how much they wear and how much they’ve decorated their home
In funerals, the deceased are covered in flowers and gems and lowered into graves hidden in the mountains
Weddings are uniform and carefully planned out. The betrothed buy elaborate jewelry and put together big ceremonies. They recite oaths to secure their bond
LeafWings:
They domesticate animals to help them hunt and navigate the Poison Jungle
They don’t have any gods, but they are superstitious and believe in things like curses and bad luck
It’s extremely taboo to kill a plant
They tell status by how big their personal tree groves are and how many furs they wear. Leaf speakers have live plants growing around their horns
The PoisonWings have a coming of age ceremony where dragonets spend 5 days alone in the jungle in order to prove they can survive (there are SapWing scouts that watch them and rescue the ones who look like they won’t survive)
When a dragonet hatches, their parents help them to plant their own tree that they care for and nurture over the course of their life. Dragons with the healthiest trees are praised and sometimes become shamans
Shamans are spiritual leaders that live in solitude in the jungle and do things like bless ceremonies and ward off curses and bad luck. They can come from and perform ceremonies for either group of LeafWings, and often intermingle
When a LeafWing dies, they’re buried beneath their tree and the tree is decorated by their loved ones
In weddings, a shaman says blessings while a leafspeaker grows flowering vines around them
