"Fuck!" you said feeling the warm liquid run down your legs. "No, no, no." You were staying over at her parents' house. Tomorrow would be the final match at the 2023 world cup and you would be gathered to watch the game there.

"Jo! We need to go, my water just broke!" you said grabbing her mother's attention. Her dad had gone to Australia to support her, but her mom refused leaving you, pregnant and alone. And you thanked the universe. You were 36 weeks, you were to give birth only next month. You had been feeling small contractions, that were apparently normal in the third trimester.

That was the only reason Georgia agreed to go.

A million thoughts went through your mind. Would the baby be okay? Would they have to do a C-section?

Would your fiancé be okay, knowing she missed the moment se was waiting so excited for? Were you even ready for this?

You started to cry immediately.

"Don't worry love, I'm calling her as soon as you're in the hospital."

"No please! You can't! You know her!" you said followed by a scream when you felt the sharp pain of a contraction hit you. "Please, please wait as much as we can. This is important for her, she needs to be a hundred percent focused."

"But seeing her daughter's birth is too..."

"I know but even if she knows, she'll won't get here in time. Please."

She only nodded agreeing with you. And you asked her to call your parents instead.

While you walked around the room, preparing yourself for the ride ahead, in attempt to stay sound, you thought about what had led you here.

You and Georgia had been together for almost six years.

You had met at Man City, both came from a small town and were around the same age, sharing the dream to become big players.

You started dating, and your relationship went through a lot.

You endured for years a long distance relationship, when you moved away to play in Spain and she stayed back in Manchester.

A couple of seasons later you transferred to Bayern, where your girlfriend soon followed suit.

And you both finally managed to start your life together.

She didn't want to wait any longer, all that time had been enough.

From living together to her proposing, life felt like pure bliss.

And after the 2022 euro's title, you felt like it was the right time to have a pause on your career.

It wasn't an easy decision, since the World Cup was around the corner.

But differently from your teammates, you now had a bigger dream, Georgia fully supported you, she herself had always wanted to be a mother.

You didn't expect for it to work so soon.

Along with the risks the doctors had told you, it could take more than one try.

Fortunately the whole pregnancy had been very healthy, and nothing gave you any reason to think something like this could happen.

You questioned yourself if you were doing the right thing, by not updating her on the matter.

Georgia's head was buzzing, Spain was winning by a goal. England had slightly recovered at the end of first half, but it wasn't enough.

She sat on the locker room, trying to cool down, zoning out a bit. All she could think of was winning this, to come home as a champion. For her girls.

She could have never imagined you had been in the hospital for the last couple of hours, let alone giving birth. So she didn't bother to look for her phone.

And before she knew, she was walking back to the field for the second half.

And you did as a loud cry filled the room. And they placed her right on your chest.

You felt like you could pass out from how tired you were.

But you couldn't, yet.

"You did great darling." her mom cooed you in between tears.

"Is the game over yet?"

"Yes, they won second place." she handed your phone over.

You cried hard a the sound of that. She had been deprived of being champion and seeing her daughter's first moments in the same day, at the same time. You tried to recompose yourself while you pressed to facetime her.

"Hey love, what took you so lon-" she managed to get out before shutting up at the realization. A big smile appearing in her tear stained face. "She's beautiful."

before she could say anything else, Lucy, who was prying at the video call, loudly announced to everyone.

"The baby is here!" and you could hear the girls cheering loudly. Running to try and congratulate you.

"You guys are so loud, geez." your soon to be wife said after a few moments, walking to a more private place, so you both could talk.

"I am so sorry." you said eyes filled with tears.

"We couldn't have known." she said giving you a reassuring smile. "I was going to show you this baby here," showing her silver medal at the camera. "But it seems like you're already holding our baby right there."

And for over ten minutes you two sat quietly, just admiring the angel you had brought into the world.

"Is she okay? I mean she clearly looks like it, but since she's early..."

"Better than expected actually. They said she's around 6.30 lbs and over 19 inches. Pretty big for a preterm. They'll run some tests in the morning, just to be sure." you said letting out a yawn.

"You need to get some sleep. And I'm getting on the first plane home."

"I love you, and I'm so proud of you."

"Oh baby, I'm the one who's proud. I love you. Both of you."

You and Jude had been friends since you were born, according to your mothers even before that, since you'd kick extra hard when they were in the same room.

When you were babies you'd yap to each other in baby sounds. Growing up you'd never let go of each other.

You supported each other through everything, something that was really crucial with both of you so focused on your football and racing careers, dreaming of winning world cups and world championships.

When you got your first period and Jude found out he immediately asked Denise if he could go buy all your favourite snacks and treats, which later he went over to give you and you just lied in bed eating what he a bought while you watched a movie.

It was only in high school when both of you started dating that some unwelcome feelings appeared. You'd feel this pit in your stomach when you saw Jude with the girl he was seeing, and the same happened to Jude with the boy you were dating. You got in arguments that none of you really knew how or why it had started, and your parents gave each other knowing looks.

Even though your relationship would never break, you still had your sleepovers, you still went on holiday together, Denise (or Dede, how you'd call her) was still like a mother to you, and Mark was still like a father, Jobe was still the annoying little brother. Your parents were second parents to Jude, your older siblings were also older siblings to him. You were still a big family.

Then there was you and Jude who were only ever best friends.

When Jude signed with Dortmund you followed him to Germany, you weren't at home much anyway, but you'd rather be with Jude anytime you could.

When Charles Leclerc got sick on the weekend of the 2020 Portuguese Grand Prix, you were called to replace him, having your opportunity to prove just how much you deserved to be in Formula 1. It was exactly that what you did, having placed third in the qualification and giving one hell of a show in the race. Becoming the first ever female driver to win a Formula 1 race as well as the youngest. And when you got out of the car, you ran to Jude, surprised he was even there. It was one of the best moments of your life.

When you signed with Ferrari later that year Jude was there with you. He went to as many races as he could and you went to as many of his matches as possible.

It was only in 2022 when you were having a picnic at the beach the week before the last race of the season that you finally admitted your feelings for each other. Feelings that were behind all those fights and the pits in the stomach.

You had kissed once before, but it was messy and full of uncertainty. This kiss was gentle and desperate at the same time, you had been waiting for this moment for way to long. This kiss brought a similar feeling of coming back home to Germany after being away for weeks, but it was even better.

When you broke the kiss, the first thing he said with a smirk on his lips was, "Was that anything like the ones in your books?" to which you replied "It was so much better" before kissing him again.

When you told your family, they almost threw a party and said they were starting to get sick of how oblivious you were to your own and each other feelings.

Your friends and your fan's reactions were very similar, with the only difference being that your friends actually threw a party, saying they couldn't turn down a good reason to have one.

Suddenly, coming back to Germany after a long time was even better. Each time, you were welcomed with a kiss just like the one at the beach.

Y/N ARNOLD: I’ve seen the clips, watched it over and over again. And like I know it’s me, I watch myself hit the ground but I just don’t remember any of it.

SAM KERR: I still remember the second that final whistle blew, Mac and I were off that field and running towards the medic room. They were still doing examinations on her, and I still remember them asking Y/N for her full name and she couldn’t answer. That - I can’t even. (pauses.) I don’t ever want to go through that again. 

[MACKENZIE’S HOUSE; MACKENZIE SITTING ON A COUCH, WIPING AWAY TEARS FROM HER EYES] 

MACKENZIE ARNOLD: It was just so scary you know, (sniffling, as she shakes her head) the look on her face when Sam and I walked in that room - like she didn’t recognise who we were.

Y/N ARNOLD: I honestly don’t remember much of what happened even a few days later, but I remember just thinking about the world cup and just believing that I’d lost my chance. There was no way I was ever going to be able to play again, not with these injuries.

Y/N ARNOLD: After the whole injury drama, I had been benched for minimum three months. Appointment after appointment, I wasn’t allowed back to training - couldn’t drive myself anywhere and I just found myself at home looking at photos of babies and watching my nieces over facetimes. (SAM LOOKING OVER TO Y/N, SMILING) 

SAM KERR: We had definitely talked about kids before, but soccer was always more important i think - and neither of us wanted to give it up just yet. (Y/N NODDING ALONG) but suddenly Y/N had a lot more time on her hands and after many conversations with ourselves, our families and our coaches. Researching IVF and you know all the options within that we decided to start our family.

SAM KERR: It was such a surreal experience, watching the person you love bring in your child into the world. (SAM BRINGING Y/N’S HAND TO HER LIPS AND GIVING THEM A KISS) 

Y/N ARNOLD: Having delilah was just so eye-opening I think for both of us. And the second they put her in my arms, my whole world had shifted.

Just beyond the tunnels, the shouts of fans echoed through, muffled by the growing distance from the exit to the field. Energizing as always for both teams that will be setting foot on the grass.

The few times in his life, Guesung has grown nervous. Each was for different reasons with different consequences. From the first club he joined since the beginning of his career to Jeonbuk Hyundai Club; meeting you and giving you the biggest sunshine of a smile when you've finally agreed to his invitation to a date; and finally, being part of representing his nation through one of the biggest events of the world: the FIFA World Cup 2022.

This was the second match of the event - his coach, Paulo Bento, had seen his spur of great performance from the last few minutes of the first game. To think he'd make it this far and attend a game from the very beginning? His excitement and nervousness had you engulfing him into a hug. One so tight that he almost bled into you. You couldn't bring yourself from feeling any less than he did.

"Quick, quick! The cameras are about to show up!" You exlaimed as you pulled his hand as he made his way towards his team. With quick short greetings, all the players greeted you with warm smiles - already loving you much of a sibling of their own. The mere honor, respect and newfound love you had for every player that will play or sit aside for substitution had no limits. The traded adoration and protection to one another went unspoken.

"Please don't tire him before the match already," Wooyoung briefly remarked, causing Guesung to whine out in protest. Your own blush didn't hide at the words, knowing full well what he meant. But just because pulling him aside, it surely did not mean for only that matter. Besides, the entire other team of Ghana had begun to leave their locker room, making their way towards the other side of the tunnel. You doubted you can get to anything even at the approaching minutes of the match. You and Guesung traded nods and greetings to the African players: a form of respect you could never keep away from showing to anyone.

Finally turning to you, you've pulled his hands that clasped around your own to your chin. His knuckles brushed your jaw, unable to hide the anxiousness within his eyes, albeit with some excitement. "Promise me that no matter what happens out there, whether you win or lose, you will still carry on. Your perseverance, your might, just as with your team will be dominating the field no matter. Trust in yourself." You pulled a hand away and placed it to his jaw.

The softness of his skin, the tell-tale sign of a clean shave from only this morning. You couldn't help but let your thumb to brush and caress the softness. His own hand moved from your clasped one and wrapped it gently around your wrist. Holding your hand in place, he turned his head and placed a gentle kiss of his lips to your palm. A silent promise. "Always, baby."

"If he doesn't, I'll be losing my wing man." The sound of Heungnim went past you. He slid to you with a quick side hug and a ruffle of your hair. Briefly protesting, you only laughed at his brotherly love. The Captain grabbed Guesung's arm. "Time to go."

You began to distance yourself further down the hall towards the exit of the tunnel, never leaving your eyes from the joy and victor of your life. Before he turned around, Guesung sent you a wink towards your direction. You're own smile grew in acknowledgement. A feeling in your stomach almost sickening you in the best way possible. One thing you cannot seem to get rid off throughout your relationship with him for as long as it has been present.

you entered the uber and immedeatly apologised for being extremely late, having to make the driver wait for 10 extra minutes. the driver said you would have to pay an extra fifty dollars, which you first frowned at, but then didn't really think much of since you were going to be earning a lot for the next few months anyways. you opened up instagram and the first person on your feed was an account named "judebellingham". you rolled your eyes at the posts comments. they were full of teenager girl drooling over his looks, calling him bae or claiming him as their man. recently there were rumours that he was dating someone eitherway, so do they think they even have a chance with him, you thought. but deep inside your heart you couldn't deny it. you also had a little liking for him, but you were still constantly reminding yourself that you have no chance with him. sooner or later you fell out of your thoughts and payed the money and thanked the driver.

the airport you were at was huge, like insanely huge. shops everywhere, full of people and life. the excitement started bubbling inside of you again. you just couldn't believe it. a free flight to qatar to watch the world cup right infront of your eyes? yes ma'am.

after getting through the security, even though they were suspicious of your loose setting powder, mistaking it for something else, you now had free time for an hour to go around the airport and go shopping. you needed new makeup and fragrances either way.

time went by extremely quick, as you hadn't even noticed that the hour had almost passed already. it was 10.23, and your flight left at 10.50. a call for your flight was made to announce that boarding had started. you quickly fleed to your gate and took your seat on the plane. putting your headphones on, you immedeatly got comfortable after the plane had already flown off the ground. you ended up dozing off.

You had been dating Auston for most of the 2022-2023 hockey season.

Initially, you weren't entirely sure about getting involved with an NHL hockey player. But Auston was persistent. His charm had this peculiar effect on you, and eventually, you couldn't resist.

And you've never looked back since.

Despite Auston's hectic schedule, the ups and downs of his hockey games, the constant travel, and all the media attention, you loved being with him. He had this incredible personality that just clicked with you from day one.

And when the Leafs made it to the second round of the Stanley Cup, you were over the moon.

You were genuinely happy for Auston, and all you wanted was to see him happy. And hockey made him happy, so you were all in, no matter what. The good, the bad, and everything in between.

But then the Leafs lost. And the offseason officially started.

It had been an incredible summer with Auston. He took you to meet his family for a few weeks, you were his plus one at Mitch and Stephanie's wedding, you even joined him for some of his publicity stuff when you had the time.

Honestly, it was kind of fun being a part of his world.

Before you met Auston, you weren't really into hockey. Sure, you knew the sport existed, but you didn't really get it. That all changed when you ran into a frazzled Auston in the cereal aisle at the local supermarket. Cereal boxes went flying, and the rest, as they say, is history.

A few weeks later, you went on your first coffee date.

But it wasn't just the hockey games stressing Auston out. His contract was also on his mind. He had one more year left in Toronto before it expired, so he needed to re-sign or potentially join another team.

But he really wanted to stay in Toronto. It was his team, the one he'd been with since 2016. It was home.

And it was your home too.

Normally, Auston would mostly think about himself and his career. But ever since he met you, he couldn't help but wonder how you felt about it all. To be honest, maybe all his worry wasn't just about re-signing or his salary.

He was also worried about you and your relationship. You didn't grow up in the hockey world like many other girlfriends and wives. You weren't used to how the whole moving teams and cities thing worked.

And that had Auston beyond stressed out.

And it was this worry that led to a conversation one casual Tuesday evening. You were both sprawled out on his sofa, watching TV after a delicious dinner.

Auston was on his back, facing the TV, and you were on top of him, your head and hand on his chest.

His breathing was slow, but it wasn't steady. Auston had something on his mind.

Out of the blue, he broke the silence.

"(Your nickname)," he began, still staring at the TV.

"Yeah, baby?"

He turned his head to look at you.

"What if I don't re-sign?" his voice was low and shaky.

"What do you mean? You still have one more year," you matched his low tone and looked up at him, resting your head on your hands.

"Yeah, but what if I don't re-sign or get traded?" His eyes looked sad, and his expression screamed worry.

"Then I guess you'll find another team that'll be lucky to have you," you reassured him with a soft smile.

"Yeah, maybe... but," he bit his lip, struggling to get the words out.

"But what, baby?" you raised yourself up a bit, supporting your weight on your arms, and looked deeply into his eyes. "Auston, you're an amazing hockey player, and you played so fucking well this season. The team even came closer to winning the Stanley Cup, which, from what I understand, is pretty impressive, and you were a big part of that."

Auston nodded slightly, and a small smile crept back onto his lips. "I know... it's just... what about us?"

"What about us?" you asked gently.

"I mean, if I were to move... what about us?" His smile faded again as his eyes locked onto yours.

You let out a little sigh. You'd talked about this before, but it was different back then, when you were just getting serious. At that point, you both wanted to take things slow and not think too far ahead. You just wanted to enjoy the moment and see where it led.

But now, it was time to face it.

"Aus," you whispered gently, "Remember when we first started seeing each other? Your determination and how many times I said no," you said, your lips curving into a fond smile. "Even though deep down, I knew I wanted to be with you, because I had my doubts about dating a pro athlete,” You paused, collecting your thoughts. “But you, Auston, you changed everything. I couldn't resist you. I fell head over heels in love with you. And I'd be in love with you anywhere in the world. So, if it means embracing your hockey career, then that's what we'll do - together."

Auston looked at you, silent for a moment.

Your eyes locked as he absorbed your words.

"So... you'd be up for moving with me if that's what it takes?"

"If you want me to move with you, hell yes," you almost whispered, smiling as you saw the wheels turning in his head.

"I'm never gonna give you up, you know that, right?" he grinned.

"Oh, I'm counting on it," you giggled softly. "You won't get rid of me that easily."

it took me over a year to go to my first football match (i’m a procrastinator) so that’s more than impressive that you’re going in a couple of days

right so—the timeline is not entirely accurate cause i’m not a magician and i wasn’t a fan back in like 2018 xx

lucy and keira dated from around 2015 until august/september 2022 (it’s thought they split pretty soon after the euros)

they both moved to barcelona from man city in the 22/23 season

between 2020 and 2023 ona played for man united

lucy staniforth is lucy’s childhood friend and played for united with ona, at staniforths wedding in december 2022 lucy and ona officially met (we think) there’s a few pics of them and it’s very adorable

all speculation but it’s thought something happened between them that night

in may lucy was spotted at the machester derby where ona won player of the match, she got away with that one as most people thought she was just watching her old team

ona went to the chelsea v barça uwcl semifinal but that was also inconspicuous at the time

in july a video posted from vicky losadas wedding showed lucy attended. the wedding was in spain and during nt camp so she flew there and back in practically 24hrs. Ona attended too and it was deduced that lucy was probably her plus one as she wasn’t in any of the official wedding pictures and didn’t post anything from it

the world cup- after spain beat england in the final, ona immediately went over to lucy to try to console her, god everything from that moment looks so tense between them. after the celebrations had pretty much finished on the pitch ona went over to her in the dugout, they sat together for about 10 minutes and there’s loads of photos. it blew up everywhere all over the news and tiktok.

if you look at those pics it’s pretty bloody obvious they were dating, but it took a lot of people by surprise and the majority of us thought the dating rumours were just a joke.

two girls recognised them at a restaurant in menorca and asked for a photo, posted it and tagged them, so it became pretty clear they were on holiday just the two of them and BOOM a lot of people were convinced

throughout the entirety of the season lucy and ona drove to matches together, i can only think of one or two times when they didn’t, there’s quite a few cute arrival videos actually

as the season went on they got progressively more comfortable in public with each other and it became far more obvious they were together- a lot of shared luggage and clothes

there have been quite a few posts, and things that needed a bit of investigation. it’s very clear they’re in a serious relationship and have been for over a year. ona lived with lucy for the majority of the season and lucy went to the nations league final in march to watch ona win.

there are so many more things that have happened but this is the first part of the lore to get you caught up a little.

“I was in the hotel after the national team match (Belgium 2-0 England) and a photo of Mishel with a dog popped up on Instagram. I only watch profiles that I follow and I didn't know her but she suddenly popped up. I thought it was a very sweet photo and commented, "Cuties" not intending for her to respond to me. But it worked." - recalls Thibaut Courtois. It was November 2020, in the middle of the global crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, and no one, not even themselves, expected that this whim of fate would turn them into the heroes of a love story. «I saw the message and thought, “Okay, fine. – I will answer you. And I wrote : "Thank you." He immediately asked me how my day was, how everything was going, and I thought: "This guy is cute." - explains model Mishel Gerzig.

From that evening on, they started talking non-stop. Every day. Until almost six months later, in April 2021, they saw each other for the first time in Madrid. “And we never parted again.” she says, stroking his hand, and the bouncer smiles knowingly in response. This is the first joint session after the wedding, which took place last July in a fairy-tale castle on the French Riviera, and after a serious knee injury that has kept Tibo off the pitch since August. During the session, they share confidences, smile, hug and kiss between photos... They are in a state of absolute happiness that cannot be hidden.

ELLE : Your relationship started long distance, but what was it like the first time you met in person?

THIBAUT: It was in Barajas, at the airport. You could fly to Spain from France, so she first flew from Israel to Paris and from there to Madrid. Right after landing, she told me that she had a problem with her passport and that they wouldn't let her into the country. It was a joke, but I was shocked and started thinking about how I could solve it. I couldn't believe it, I felt terrible.

MISHEL: (laugh). I thought of this joke to break the ice because I was very nervous when I saw him.

T: She was traveling with her best friend and they spent the night at my house. But we slept separately! (laugh). We had been talking on FaceTime all the time for months, we knew each other very well, but we needed to meet in person. We didn't plan much. We went for lunch, dinner, walked, talked for hours... I tried to get a friend to accompany me to training or a match. In fact, Mishel sometimes visited Di Stéfano, where we were playing at the time. And everything came out naturally, it worked. She brought a suitcase for two weeks because she had the idea to go to Amsterdam to work and then she never left (laugh).

M: That's true! The pandemic started and I was in Israel. When I had the opportunity to travel, I wanted to resume modeling, but my plans changed (laughter). I planned to stay here for two weeks, but I stayed much longer. That's because we had so much fun together. We already knew that we understood each other well remotely, but we tested each other in person and our relationship was even stronger.

E: So much so that you quickly became engaged.

T: And I wanted it to be even earlier (laugh). In January 2022, I went to buy a ring with a friend and thought: "I want one too." We had only been together for a few months, but I knew Mishel was the love of my life. I decided to wait until June to do it in a unique way. She loves the sea, so I found the right moment, improvised during a trip to Positano and asked her. We didn't want to wait so long to get married, but due to the World Cup and other commitments with Real Madrid and the Belgian national team, it was difficult to find an earlier date.

E: Thibaut is an international football star. Did you feel dizzy when you entered his world?

M: At first, yes. I thought about how I would cope. Tibo attracts a lot of attention and generates a lot of noise, but I slowly got used to it. It's beautiful to see all the love it awakens in people.

E: Shortly after the wedding, an injury occurred. How did you survive it?

T: The first day was difficult. I wrote to Mishel: "I think I broke my knee in training."

M: I quickly took the car and drove to Valdebebas.

T: We went for an MRI, which quickly showed that I had a serious injury. I was still inside and they had already told Mishel and the physio what happened. When I came out, I cried, but then I felt people's support and I started thinking positively. You can't go back. Mishel helped me a lot, especially in the first month when I was limping and could barely move. Now I'm working hard to come back as soon as possible and be 100% healthy.

E: How did this situation change your daily life?

T: Now I spend more hours training, but I also have more flexibility when it comes to being with my children and Mishel. The good thing is that they adore her, so we spend a lot of time together. The injury made me look at everything from a different perspective. I love football and I miss it, but there are other things I love and want to do. This year I'm going to start my Master's in Sports Management and hope to graduate. We also have several businesses (he invested in the production of plant milk, in Neat Burger, vegan burgers, in which Leonardo DiCaprio and Lewis Hamilton are also partners; he has a Formula 4 team, TC Racing, and Mishel is preparing to open a beauty salon in Madrid), it is worth develop mentally and learn new things. We are both curious and excited.

M: I'm lucky that in my job I can move deadlines freely. Previously, I did it to be with him at important matches and support him. When he got injured, I changed my schedule to spend more time at home to help him. And now, when I feel much better, I have gone to work in the United States. For me, balance is the most important thing because I want to do both, have time for work, but also for my personal and family life.

E: Speaking of family, your Mishel lives in Israel. How do you deal with what's going on there?

M: All people who were born there have been up to date with the current conflict throughout their lives. It's not that you get used to it, but you grow up having it in your everyday life. I served in the military for two years, so I know this up close. It's very painful to see what point this has gotten to. My family and friends are seeing and hearing terrible things as we all know people who have been killed or injured.

T: When I was a child and saw this conflict on TV, I didn't understand anything. This is a delicate and complicated issue for those of us who are neither Palestinian nor Israeli. Now I have family and friends there, so I experience it more closely, but I am Belgian. I show my support and respect every opinion, as long as it is expressed in a polite manner. We are all human and no one wants innocent people to die. This is the most important. But now there is a lot of hate, especially online, there is a lot of division and it is very difficult. These are things that cannot be allowed because we all want peace.

M: I have been living with this confrontation for 26 years, but I want to be positive and believe that peace will come and that all innocent people will be safe.

E: How did your careers start?

M: I started when I was 13, participating in a beauty pageant in Tel Aviv. At the age of 16, I worked outside Israel for the first time, on shows and campaigns in Milan and Miami.

T: I have been playing football since I was a child. At the age of 16, I was lucky enough to join Genk, one of the best teams in Belgium. When I was 18, we won the league and that made me grow. Chelsea signed a contract with me and loaned me to Atlético Madrid. I didn't speak Spanish, but I felt it was time to leave, even though almost no one around me was supportive. The first weeks were difficult, but I immediately felt the warmth of the people. The crowd and the team welcomed me very warmly and that made me fall in love with Madrid and Spain. When I had to go to England, it was very difficult for me to adapt because I missed Madrid. That's why I was happy to come back in 2018.

E: First you were at Atléti and now at Real Madrid. Do you think people understand this?

T: I know this is hard to understand for someone who loves Atléti. For the three years I played there, I gave everything I had to win. But I'm an athlete, it's my profession and I have to improve and fulfill my dreams by making bold decisions. Of course, I respect my past and never forget about it.

E: What are your plans for the future?

T: Growing the family, that's the first. And helping people, and that's the most important thing to both of us. To come back well after the injury and be in the best shape. Develop businesses and continue to enjoy life together in Madrid, with family and five dogs. I love sports and will always be involved in it, but when I retire, I see myself coaching youth teams rather than senior teams. It's too much pressure and too much time away from home. I think Mishel would throw me out of it (laugh).

I like to imagine that after steve and eddie have been dating for a while, Steve gets them matching wedding rings. Obviously they can't get officially married cause that was illegal in 1989, but they still exchange matching rings anyway. It's a symbol of their love and once it goes on it never comes off 😌 I also feel like eddie would constantly admire his and take any opportunity to show it off, while steve would just get used to it super fast but be super uncomfortable whenever he's not wearing it. One time he puts it down to do the dishes and then freaks out when he can't find it after, then after that he never takes it off.

The next day, he comes home dejectedly. “It’s Steve Harrington.” Wayne laughs out loud. “A Harrington? Good luck kid.” “I had to like the most popular boy...” “I’m sure there are other nice boys at school to like. What about Jonathan?” “EW NO! He’s my friend!” 

Next day, comes home even more dejected. “I have a huge crush on Steve. This sucks.” “Oh no, what happened?” Long silence. “He smiled at me.” “BOY-” 

The next day, Eddie is at his locker with Jonathan, in the middle of a long ramble. “I just don’t understand how someone can look that perfect. His hair? Perfect. His abs? Perfect. Even his ass is perfect! How can someone’s ass look that great?” He makes a grabbing gesture with his hands. “I just wanna...squeeze.” 

Jonathan groans. “Dude. Can you just...not.” His face falls when he sees Steve standing behind Eddie, a bewildered look on his face.

“No, no, I'm just saying,” Eddie continues, oblivious. “Not a tight squeeze, just a light one-” 

Jonathan smacks his arm. “Eddie-Eddie, stop talking!”  

“-just to see what it feels like. Hey, can’t you see I’m trying to have a moment with my imagination! What do you want?” Jonathan points and Eddie turns around, coming face to face with Steve himself...and screams. He stands there, horrified, and panickily blurts out, “I was talking about...boobs.”  

Steve’s brow furrows and he shrugs. “Okay, whatever.” 

“What do you want?” Jonathan asks. 

Steve ignores him, focused on Eddie. “Look, apparently my parents think I need a math tutor, so our teacher told me to go talk to you.” (Yes, Eddie is a little math whiz. At least he was in tenth grade.)

Realization dawns on Eddie. “Ah, you’re the one I’m tutoring in math.” 

“Yeah, so if you want to go get this over with.” 

“You want to study? With me? Now?” 

“Well, yeah, we could study...” Steve begins, in that annoying voice he always uses when he wants to be persuasive. “Or...” Eddie’s eyebrows raise, brain running through all the possible things he could suggest, most of them unrealistic but very fun to imagine. “I could pay you $50 to do my math homework for me.” He grinned like it was the best deal in the world, but Eddie’s face quickly darkened. Here he was, in love with Steve and Steve just wants to use him for math homework. He was ready to tell him to shove his money up his ass, but then he thought of all the things he could buy with $50. Most notably - the beautiful guitar he saw in the music store window. 

He turned back to Steve, glaring at him. “Fine,” he bit out, snatching the bill from his hand. 

Eddie did do the math homework, and did it well as he always did, but hated every second of it. He considered doing all the questions wrong, but ultimately decided to just do them right and get it over with. For the guitar. 

He walks up to Steve at his locker, where he is laughing with Tommy and Carol. “Hey,” he demands. 

Steve turns around, looking at him like he’s wondering why he’s talking to him. “What?” 

Eddie holds up the binder. “Here’s your math homework.” He drops it in Steve’s waiting hands. “You disgust me.” He double flips him off before walking away. 

Later in math class, as the teacher hands Steve’s homework back to him and tells him “He’s really improving!”, and Steve turns to grin impudently at Eddie like he did all the work, Eddie flips him off once more. His crush on Steve Harrington is officially over. He is in his anti era now.

But he did buy the guitar, and he mounts it on his wall. A guitar...that was destined for an alternate dimension. A guitar for drawing away demobats, paid for by Steve, in a moment of sleaziness. (And yes, Eddie did tell Corroded Coffin that Steve was their biggest financier.)

FIFA World Cup 2022: Round of 16 Predictions

It’s been a different kind of World Cup so far — and that’s an understatement. While one always expects some upsets and some thrilling finishes, we’ve had more than our fair share of surprises and drama.

Africa had its best ever group stage with 7 wins. The warm climate of Qatar may be a factor. Two African teams have advanced this year; none advanced in Russia 4 years ago. Europe is less represented in this knockout stage than it was last time around. And while South America sent five teams to the knockout stages at the 2014 tournament in Brazil, only two have survived this time.

Favorites Brazil and Argentina are through, despite losses to Cameroon and Saudi Arabia respectively. Defending champions France also have a blemish on their record, but are through nonetheless. Regular contenders such as Spain, Portugal, the Netherlands, and England are also through.

But stalwarts like Germany, Belgium, and Uruguay could not manage to make it out of the group stage this year. Mexico failed to reach the knockout stages for the first time since 1978. Dark horse favorites Denmark couldn’t make an impact. Instead, surprise performances by Japan, Korea, and Morocco stole the show.

It’s truly a “world” tournament:

Europe - 8

South America - 2

Africa - 2

Asia - 2

CONCACAF - 1

Oceania - 1 (though they play in the Asian confederation)

Still, based on the matchups, I suspect the quarterfinals will end up looking as they normally do. Here’s how I think things will pan out…

🇳🇱 Netherlands vs. 🇺🇸 USA

History The Dutch and Americans have met five times, but never in a competitive match. Of the five friendlies, the Dutch have won four. But the U.S. won the most recent contest 4-3 in Amsterdam in 2015.

Qatar 2022 Neither of these teams have looked great so far. Despite going undefeated in the group stage, the Dutch have underperformed. They benefited from being in the easiest group and yet struggled against Ecuador. The Americans, on the other hand, fought their way through a group that included England and two other teams comparable to them in the FIFA world rankings. And while they demonstrated grit in their must-win match against Iran, they never quite managed to show enough quality to defeat a top-flight team.

But there are rumors about the flu making its way through the Dutch team. I don’t think this will be one of the more exciting matchups, but I fancy the Oranje to come away with a narrow win. The Netherlands is undefeated in their last 18 matches, winning 13 of them. The U.S. win against Iran is their only victory in their last 6 games. This U.S. team is still young and has very little World Cup experience. Such experience counts for something in the playoff rounds.

Prediction: 🇳🇱 NED 1 🇺🇸 USA 0

🇦🇷 Argentina vs. 🇦🇺 Australia

History These teams last played each other in a friendly 15 years ago. Australia has not defeated Argentina since 1988. In 7 contests, Argentina has 5W, 1D, 1L. This will be their first World Cup Finals meeting.

Qatar 2022 Kudos to the Socceroos for impressive wins over both Tunisia and dark horse favorites Denmark! They even came out strong in their opener against France, before finally bowing to them after a 4–1 thrashing.

I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen again against Argentina. While La Albiceleste revealed weaknesses in their stunning loss to Saudi Arabia, they showed their mettle in wins against Mexico and Poland. (The loss to the Saudis is their only defeat in their last 39 contests, dating back to 2019.) This team is now starting to click again and should be in top form to ward off any challenge from the pesky Aussies.

Prediction: 🇦🇷 ARG 3 🇦🇺 AUS 0

🇫🇷 France vs. 🇵🇱 Poland

History France has the historic edge in this contest, with 8W, 5D, 3L. Their only previous World Cup meeting was a thrilling third-place playoff in 1982 from which Poland emerged victorious, 3-2. But France has been the better team since then.

Qatar 2022 France’s B-team suffered a 1-0 loss to Tunisia, but have otherwise been perhaps the best squad of the tournament so far. Their midfield has been on point, and Mbappé has been shining. There were some questions about this team, given their Round of 16 exit from the Euros, and recent losses to Denmark and Croatia. But France have come to play and appear poised to make a good run at defending their title.

It’s hard to see Robert Lewandowski’s Poland overcoming the depth and skill of this French squad. While the French have shown vulnerabilities in their defense (they have conceded in each game), their offensive prowess is simply too much for Poland. Les Bleus should walk away with this one.

Prediction: 🇫🇷 FRA 2 🇵🇱 POL 0

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 England vs. 🇸🇳 Senegal

History These two nations have never met in international football. But England has an impressive record against African competition — undefeated in all 20 games they’ve played against African nations. By contrast, Senegal have a 6-5-5 record against European teams, most recently losing to the Dutch in the group stage.

Qatar 2022 The Three Lions looks difficult to beat. If Rashford, Kane, and Saya are on their game, and a spritely Foden can make an impact coming off the bench, they should be able to score a healthy amount. But their goalless draw against the USA was a sign that this team could be stifled if faced with an opponent who wants it enough.

Senegal is Africa’s highest-ranked team, but with their star striker (Sadio Mané) out for the tournament, their path forward is a little more challenging. I’m not sure the energy from their exciting win over Ecuador will be enough to overpower or withstand one of the best squads England has sent to the World Cup in years.

Prediction: 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 ENG 3 🇸🇳 SEN 1

🇯🇵 Japan vs. 🇭🇷 Croatia

History Japan and Croatia have squared off three times before, with each team winning once and the other match in a draw. A 1997 match in Japan saw the home side victorious, but a 1998 World Cup meeting in France went to the Europeans. Their 2006 World Cup fixture in Germany ended goalless.

Qatar 2022 The Samurai Blue have been one of the most delightful surprises of this tournament. Their stunning upsets of both Spain and Germany en route to win their challenging group places them as one of the top teams of the tournament. But can their grit and determination be enough to push them past Luka Modrić and a skilled, scrappy Croatia team that were runners-up at the last World Cup?

Get ready for this to be one of the more exciting matches of the Round of 16. Both teams play with an urgency, especially when pushed. As soon as one team takes the lead, they’ll fight to tie it up. I might not usually expect Japan to put more than one into the Croatian net, but they’ve already done that against better teams. Sadly, I think their luck will run out against the more experienced Croatians.

Prediction: 🇯🇵 JPN 1 🇭🇷 CRO 1 (wins on penalties)

🇧🇷 Brazil vs. 🇰🇷 Korea Republic

History Brazil and South Korea have squared off in seven international matches, mostly friendlies. Korea has just one triumph, a 1-0 win in 1999. When the two teams faced off just six months ago, Brazil won 5-1. Neymar netted two in that game.

Qatar 2022 Like France and Portugal, Brazil rested their star players for their final group match and paid the price. But even Brazil’s reserves should have done better. A key issue for the team has been finishing. They need Neymar’s creativity to get their strikers in the best positions. There’s no reason the likes of Richarlison, Gabriel Jesus, Vini Jr., and Raphina shouldn’t be racking up goals.

The Koreans were able to best Portugal’s B-squad to secure their place in the Round of 16, knocking out Uruguay in the process. But other than that, their play has not provided much to suggest that they can beat The Seleção. It seems near impossible to score against Brazil’s top 11. They’ve recorded clean sheets in 22 of their last 32 games. In fact, they didn’t even surrender a shot on goal for the first two group stage matches. If Neymar is healthy, I think we should be prepared to see the Samba Kings break out at last.

Prediction: 🇧🇷 BRA 3 🇰🇷 KOR 0

🇲🇦 Morocco vs. 🇪🇸 Spain

History Spain and Morocco faced off in the group stages at the 2018 World Cup. That match ended in a 2-2 draw, with Spain netting an equalizer in the 90th minute. Their only two other meetings came in World Cup qualifying in 1961. Spain won both.

Qatar 2022 La Roja were the early stars of the tournament after their 7-0 thumping of Costa Rica. But a draw against a lackluster Germany and a loss to Japan have tempered expectations. Morocco, on the other hand, has been one of the most consistent teams at the tournament, even defeating the second-ranked Belgians.

But this is only Morocco’s second trip to the Round of 16, and first since 1986. This Spain team has valuable experience in high-stakes tournaments. They also have exciting young players like Gavi to bring a renewed energy as well. Looking at Spain’s pacing, control, and penchant for possession, it’s hard to see Morocco extending their brilliant run. But I wouldn’t count them out. This one could head to extra time or even penalties.

Prediction: 🇪🇸 ESP 3 🇲🇦 MAR 2

🇵🇹 Portugal vs. 🇨🇭 Switzerland

History One of two all-European battles in the Round of 16, there’s a lot of history between these two teams. The Swiss have a slight edge with 11W, 5D, 9L. The two have seen each other twice this year in the UEFA Nations League, with Portugal winning 4-0 in Lisbon and Switzerland winning 1-0 in Geneva.

Qatar 2022 Portugal joined France and Brazil as the only teams to secure their second-round berths after two games. They made several changes to their lineup against South Korea, ultimately costing them the match. But prior to that, the Portuguese looked strong — fighting off Ghana and controlling play against Uruguay.

Switzerland is much more comfortable with a slow, defensive style of play. They’re a team that ekes out 1-0 and 2-1 victories. (Their 3-2 win against Serbia was their first time scoring more than 2 goals in over a year.) But as Brazil was able to dictate the flow of their game against the Swiss, I suspect Portugal’s offense will do the same. But don’t count the Swiss out. They were still able to hold mighty Brazil to one goal, so Portugal will have their work cut out for them. I think Ronaldo and his team will prevail, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they had to go through extra time or penalties to do so.

I realize that, in each case, I’ve predicted the favored team will win. While I really do think these are the most likely outcomes given how the teams have played so far and their histories, this is the World Cup, and there’s bound to be a surprise or two (or three). If an upset is to happen, here’s who I think is most likely to do it.
