ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A KNIGHT...

the visual inspiration for this was a combination of Frederic William Burton's Meeting on the Turret Stairs and also Bernardo Cavallino's The vision of St. Dominic receiving the Rosary from the Virgin

this was supposed to be just a one off illustration to get the thoughts out of my system, but then I started thinking about medieval politics and warfare and plagues and a castle and home as both a place of refuge, a prison, and a tomb, so perhaps they will end up as ex voto characters as well.

you may say, hey! that rosary looks like it has too many beads! it's a fifteen decade rosary, probably. dominicans are really into marian devotions. it works out.

also. spiral style stair cases. oh boy. it was that unexpectedly more difficult than I originally thought it would be to draw. the more I think about it, the less I understand them, even though I had a million photos of the stairs in front of me while I was drawing it.

The most brilliant and impressive thing Ryan Coogler did in my opinion was figure out how to communicate to the audience the actual tangible power of Sammie’s music, so we could truly conceptualize what it was that Remmick wanted and what he threatened to take away.

it's. its the way that martyn has just been moments ahead of dying before jimmy every single time. it's the way that he went yellow at the end of ep 1 and jimmy hit 1 heart and went yellow at the start of ep 2. its the way that martyn fell of the platform and, as if the gods themselves had a personal vice, the dragon suddenly divebombed jimmy and he died TWELVE SECONDS LATER. martyn was first to yellow. martyn was first to red. jimmy follows just moments behind each time.

its the way that martyn is known for devoting himself to a single person and taking as much of the heat and horror off of them as possible at the cost of himself and his wellbeing. the watchers dont want the canary curse to be broken. jimmy is just following his normal schedule of dying and dying and dying except this time martyn is forcing his way in too soon and dying just seconds before.

im just. imagine if the same thing happens for permadeaths. imagine the reaction if martyn and jimmy died at basically the same time except martyn's death message was just before jimmy's. the canary curse is broken, not in some big way where jimmy wins the season or 5v1s an entire team, but through the angry clawing furious devotion of a friend. martyn cant just fight off the forces of the universe with ease but he can do the thing he has always been good at: fighting like an animal and edging his way in despite all odds. he can't make jimmy win, but he sure as hell can make sure he doesn't lose. and maybe things will get better for him after that.
