Scrivner is kicking my ass
I self pub, and am trying to break out of using the icky kindle default tool, that locks your work into a format only for their service. Scrivner seemed like a cost effective alternative, but it also seems to have a learning curve like the Matterhorn.
For example, I work primarily in Google docs because I like the portability, even if it gets unweildly for novel length works. Previously, I would copy paste the text into word after writing. But the functionality isn't clearly flagged, for example you wouldn't automatically know you can upload word files to Scrivner via import. Likewise, I can't figure out how to make Pratchett style footnotes work.
Seeking out tutorials tends to default into videos telling you how to use it as a planning tool or change the colours for aesthetics, as a precursor to selling paid master classes - which make your bank, writing adjacent secondary industry, but the top down big picture onboarding is much more hidden. I don't need a squintillion little cards reminding me the protagonist has azure eyes, and the secondary character wants to open a pastry shop. Likewise, I don't even know why the hell I should be cutting chapters into smaller scenes (particularly since my chapters typically are a scene long!). Scrivner's example documents as templates are likewise bewildering. Sure you have 80 kinds of little nested text scrap, but where is your push button to make finished product button please?
This feels like it's meant for people who enjoy Being Writers more so than writing. Meanwhile, I just want to format my femdom heavy Drow/Drider romance pretty in a way that protects me if I get tired of amazon and spit out a document I can share with the poor person I am being edited by (paid) to return with notes. Arrgh, arrgh, Hargl.

I freaking love Ancient Egypt.
I think the animal-headed gods first drew me in as a kid, and then the whole mummy thing just, fascinated me! And the hieroglyphics are so beautiful. I am totally an armchair archeologist--I have watched so many documentaries and read so many books on the subject.
Tumblr media
Many years ago, I went to visit a mummy at the Boston Museum of Art. The mummy was a priest in his life, and they had recreated his tomb around him. And it was not the Book of the Dead that graced the walls--it was the Amduat.
The Amduat tells the story of Ra's journey every night when he--as sun god--descends below the horizon. Each panel is an hour, three on each wall. He and his fellow gods journey down Nile of the underworld and then come to a desert, through which his attendants carry his barge.
And every night, in the Sixth Hour, Apophis comes.
He is the embodiment of death and destruction and evil and the end of everything, depicted usually as a terrible serpent. He rises up out of the sands of the desert and threatens to devour Ra and the entire world as well.
Every night, the gods do battle with this beast. Surprisingly, they are lead in many depictions by Set, himself a chaotic, dangerous god.
Tumblr media
And every night they put down the beast, and Ra triumphs, and continues his journey to the East, where he rises once again to bring a new day to the people of the world.
But the outcome is never assured, you see. One night, he just might loose the battle, and be devoured, and the sun will never rise again.
This story captivated me. What sort of people would create such a narrative, one where every night could possibly be the world's last?
On the ride home I had a vision of mysterious figures running through an Ancient Egyptian city, and my own story was born. And I knew even before I knew the plot what the name of the story had to be: The Sixth Hour. The hour when everything hangs in the balance. The hour when failure is just not an option.
I wrote and re-wrote the story several times over the years. I realized that I could never research enough to make a perfectly accurate historical story, so I deliberately allowed myself to take some liberties, to free myself from the restraints of perfectionism. That's why I call this a fantasy adventure based on Ancient Egypt and the lands surrounding it, instead of a historical novel.
A friend enjoyed it so much she drew me some fanart, gave me permission to use it as a cover, and encouraged me to share my story with the world, and so I finally took a deep breath and made the plunge. Honestly, it's terrifying to put myself out there. It is not in my nature.
But I enjoyed writing this little story very much, and I would like to share it, in the hope that you will enjoy reading it, too.

Cover reveal and release details!

[Image description: The cover of the book THE ENCHANTED FOREST AND OTHER STORIES: FIVE TALES OF GENDER MAGIC by Zoe Storm. The cover depicts a person seen from behind walking on a forest path. The person has brown hair, is wearing a beige beanie and an orange jacket, and has a blue backpack on their shoulder; the forest is dark and foreboding. The title of the book is written in white capital letters on the top part of the cover, and the author's name, also in white capital letters, is at the bottom. End ID.]
Presenting: the cover of my new book, The Enchanted Forest and Other Stories: Five Tales of Gender Magic!
Look at it! It's super good!
The book is also super good, I promise! (Though I may be biased, since I'm the author and all, lol.) And, what would you know, the ebook version of my latest offering can be preordered NOW from various websites!
You can pick the online store of your choosing by following this here link. And, if you prefer your online store to be of the itch.io flavour, I've got you covered: you can find the book right here.
The e-book version of this book will be released on all storefronts on December 24th, 2023, just in time for Christmas!
But wait, there's more! There's also a paperback version coming from Amazon, which cannot unfortunately be pre-ordered but which will be released on December 17th! Watch this space, I will post here when it's released.
But wait, there's more! For the first time ever, one of my books will be released in a language other than English, in this case Italian! The release dates for the e-book and the paperback will be the same, and the e-book can be pre-ordered from these links: itch.io, and other storefronts.
I've given it my all to bring this book to y'all, and I hope you like it! ❤️

Like Eden's now all wrapped up in a pretty little ebook!
In the aftermath of the sandsteamer In a moment of peace Tucked into the greenery of the geodome A liminal place outside of time Vash and Wolfwood find comfort and hope in each other
As always, the fic is still up on AO3! But I've been dying to wrap up one of my Trigun works into a pretty ebook, and today's my birthday (tho a pretty crappy one so far orz), so I took the opportunity to celebrate! I've had such an amazing time in this fandom, thank you all so much for being so amazing and friendly and especially to those who have given my unusual writing a chance <3

please help a disabled author?
I was just on hold with the government for ten hours trying to get (some of) my benefits renewed.
I did not get my benefits renewed.
If people buy my (incredibly queer, weird, fantasy/SF/horror) short stories, I can get off benefits, and then I will not have to be on the phone with the government for ten hours.
And you get cool short stories.

Hey, writers of tumblr. I'm thinking about putting together a self-study course/ebook type thing on how to edit, intended for new/aspiring authors and those looking to prep their work for self-publishing.
For context: I currently do most of my freelance work through an agency that positions itself as an industry leader for author services (make of that what you will) and I get a lot of quote requests from folks who know their work needs editing, but have little idea where to start or what to expect. Frequently, either cost is a barrier to entry for them, or I find I'm having to correct or explain the same issues to a lot of clients.
I'd like to put something out on a pay-what-you-want basis that covers the most common issues I see in manuscripts. I'm thinking topics like basic grammar and formatting (especially for ESL writers and those working with translators), POV and perspective issues, filtering, pacing, rhythm & flow, dialogue, and a primer on techniques for self-editing your work prior to submission, pre-production, or sharing it in general.
Is this something you'd be interested in? What other kinds of topics would you like to see? What format(s) would you prefer?
