Question for other #authors. How much of a story can be told in media res? I'm looking at doing a novel in this format, which catches up to the start about halfway through. But I'm concerned it may come across as disconnected. #WritingQ

My parents moved me to a new flat, and I hoped that with the quiet would help bring back the executive function/studying ability I'd lost in burnout. I used to run a writing account where I asked writingq's daily and responded to dozens of people but it's beyond me now.

It's scaring me because it seems permanent and with weird motion things going on (seizing up, hand stuck in weird positions, periods where I can't move) I worry it might be degenerative. Haven't finished reading a book in months. Trying to do anything new is met with a huge mental block. Stressful to watch movies/documentaries because it's too much strain.

Had to drop out of A levels before I completed them - no higher education - unsure if I'll ever be able to get them.

I've never had good executive function, and with most of it gone I'm scared of what my life will be like and if I'll able to be deeply fulfilled, especially if it gets worse. I'm scared I'll never finish my novel. Working on it for many years now. Don't know if I can fit all the fragments together.

I have the ideas but combining them seems impossible. Need to understand the world to understand my story and I forget what day it is and food rots in the fridge.

I have a lot of dreams. Want to play dnd and write books and make art and talk with friends regularly and dance and do pull-ups but I can barely do a single thing. I used to be able to do a lot more and I don't why the peace here hasn't fixed it.

I'm technically an adult now (18) but I've been in limbo for several years so I still feel like a teen.

I do know I'm loved and that there are wonderful people online to be friends with so it isn't all bad. I'm still terrified.

But there are Costiella Kuroshimae (sea sheep) in the world so it can't be that terrible

Be teenager is time most people start able do lot more stuff. Start be see as more mature and need less help parent.

But, all this excite is make feel so more bad when are lose independence as teenager. It frustrate and emberess to see friend talk of learn drive and go college and so many fun new thing, and then go home and close to no can brush own teeth. To be age where want do thing self no parent but need help from parent more and more.

So, this post for us. For the teenager who are lose freedom while peer gain. For the teenager who are become more disable and see future had plan fall apart. It no is fair have happen, and Frog is send support to all people read this who need.

Just write as much as you can, whenever you can! That’s the best advice I can give, but considering I was five days late on a creative writing class deadline, I might not be the best person to ask about this haha.

In my defense, the teacher wasn’t expecting anyone to write a 7,000 word short story when the minimum word count was 600, so he deadline was pretty soon after it was assigned.

How I learned to ask questions when writing for others, after I didn’t with my ass on the line.

Before you write anything for new clients, ask them what kind of writing they like or want. E.g., direct, provocative, colorful, spare. Look at things that were written for them by others or that their office or company had published. Get a bead on their preferences, so you won’t stumble by writing something alien to their tastes or needs. 

Also, if they request a certain kind of document, say a brochure, and you don’t have agreed-upon specifics, ask them the purpose and for whom it’s intended, and the size, maybe bring a sample or two to help them focus. 

When I was young and starting out as a freelancer, a serendipitous client -- referred by a guy I met in a bar the night before -- asked me to write a brochure over a weekend for a lot of money. It was intended as a picture of the company’s history, growth, products, success. He needed it Monday at noon. Lamely, I didn’t ask any of these questions, but assumed what was warranted, read the background he had messengered to me, and wrote away. The guy loved what I showed him on Monday mid-morning but said the concept was not only wrong; it was dead wrong! 

Obviously, he was peeved. I was red-faced and felt dumber than a nude teenager hiding behind a bush after his friends had run off with his bathing suit and pants just as he was going to get dressed at the local swimming hole and some girls from school would be walking past in seconds.

I had written text for a lovely six-page glossy folder along with ideas for bleed photos and abstract background graphics. It was a gem of its kind. 

What did he want? A three-panel Slim-Jim folder with mostly bulleted entries that he could edit and have retyped in his office that day, then photocopied on 8.5x11 heavy paper, no pix, just type with headlines and sub-heads as visual breaks. Something he could slip into his vest pocket and hand to people at a conference he was going to the very next day! 

Fortunately, he allowed me to rework the text in his office to give him what he required and post-haste. The end result was what I could have written in a few hours had I asked a few basic questions instead of assuming what was needed. Yes, we worked it out in the end, but not without upsetting his day and mine. Not a good way to do business. I’ve never made that mistake again and my writing and freelance relationships improved accordingly and resulted in more satisfied clients and more assignments.

Takeaway: If the other person doesn’t tell you and you don’t ask, guess whose ass is on the line?

just out of interest - do you prefer my longer or shorter blurbs?? i’ve noticed a difference in notes between the two before, and longer blurbs obviously take me longer to write, so I don’t want to spend more time on one blurb if people would rather read a few shorter ones! if you prefer shorter ones that is absolutely fine - i’m just curious because I want you guys to enjoy them! let me know 💕
