My Controversial Smut-Take:

Smut has become a thing that can either make a fic or break a fic for me. Even as an author, I am guilty of “breaking a fic” with smut. Now that I’ve been reading and writing a bit longer, here’s my biggest controversial (maybe) smut-take.

Note: This does not imply to fics that are actual smut fics. That’s not what I’m mentioning here.

My biggest peeve is when I’m reading a fic that has a wonderful plot point and then as soon as the smut hits, that’s all the story has become. I’m guilty of this myself, unfortunately. It ultimately made me lose direction in a fic that I wrote, I’m Glad These Roads Led Me To You. I loved writing this fic so much. But the moment I did one smut scene, that unraveled into more smut scenes and then I thrived on the feedback of them and that was great. But I felt lost in the direction of where I was taking it plot wise, and then after taking an even longer break to find some direction, I feel like I lost the plot entirely. I’ll find my way back to it though, with a great planning strategy.

This doesn’t always happen though, and I’ve seen it done very well with a few fics. I feel like when smut is just another part of a fic, it can take a story to new heights. You get the best of the plot with a little smut on the side and it’s a perfect ensemble of a wonderful plot and an incredible addition of written porn, haha.

Smut gets stories lots of hits, kudos, comments, etc. because we’re all humans and humans get horny and well…you get it. I feel like the biggest downfall with smut is when authors, again, like myself, start getting that boost from the smut and then it’s like, “People are really enjoying this and are commenting on this, so let me give them more of this thing that they seem to enjoy!”

But the best part of the story is well, the plot. The plot is what’s keeping me interested. What are the characters doing, how do they feel, what are they thinking, what are they experiencing, where is this all going, where will they eventually end up? I feel like a lot of these questions get lost when smut takes over a story and it’s happened with a fic I recently read.

It had a great plot, great character development, awesome descriptions, and amazing writing. It was the perfect balance of romance and humor and angst and fluff and then smut entered and then I’m like, “Where was this story going before this?” And, “Where is the story going now?”

I’m writing a fic now where there’s smut in chapter 2 (so very early on) and my biggest goal with this fic is that smut has to make sense and only be a participant in the overall story. It can’t just be put in there to make things spicy. It has to just be another note in this song that elevates it, but doesn’t take over and become all that the story is. I don’t want people to start reading this fic and then forget what the core of it is or let it fall off because now there’s more smut than there is character dialogue and story advancement.

This is long and very dragged out. But I just felt like putting this out there because although smut is GREAT (of course it is.) I also feel like there can be a negative side to it as well. So there’s my maybe-maybe not, controversial smut-take. Leave your own thoughts if you feel inclined.

Dog Holliday!!! So here's a ficlet I wrote after finding out through Dracula Daily that Dracula could turn into a wolf/dog, and thinking hey Doc was once a vampire, what if he could too?! Beauty, Truth & Love (Moulin Rouge AU)

Chapter 1

It was the summer of love and the heart of the bohemian revolution was thriving in the streets of Paris. And Nicole Haught was right in the thick of it all. She was living in the hustle and bustle of Paris, where the children of the revolution lived. These people believed in beauty, truth, and love. Nicole believed in love above all things. This is why she had moved to Paris in the hope of pursuing her writing. Maybe here where art, beauty, and love flourished she would be discovered. Sadly, there was a bit of a setback. Due to a lack of experience along with being a woman, no one truly took Nicole seriously. So, all that Nicole could afford for living space was a ratty apartment in a small and compact part of town. It was old, smelly and had creaky everything. But the tall read head was too busy writing to notice any of these things. It was on one such day as Nicole was busy at her typewriter that her life would change forever. A loud creak came from above and then a crash. Nicole jumped in her chair that sat at her desk by the window. She blinked rapidly as she saw that a hole had appeared in her ceiling. That’s also when Nicole realized that there was a man lying on the floor at the bottom of the hole. “Oh hello,” came a voice from the hole.

I love how everyone’s process of writing fanfic is different. I’ve realized that other people actually plan the fics out. Like they sit down, give themselves an overview for what they want accomplished in each chapter and then go from there. Some people write it down and then type it out. Then there’s me who gets an idea and just starts immediately typing and rolls with it. Earlier I got inspo to write a fic that’s been an idea popping in and out of my head for a while but I would always push it to the back burner.

But today that writer itch hit while it was super slow at work (probably due to the holiday) and I just dropped what I was doing. I’ve got 4 chapters now. I dunno why but fics come more naturally to me when I just pick up my phone and open the notes app and can let my mind just roll with whatever it comes up with. I usually don’t think about it much, I just start typing. I’ve realized that’s just how I write. Having ADHD I can’t sit and just plan out everything that’s going on. My mind will have a multitude of ideas that I have to get out in 3-4 chapters and then I come back to it when I mind starts rolling with ideas again.

This has been a blessing and a curse. A curse mainly for longer stories because then I’m like, “ok, where does the plot go now?” Which is currently where I’m at with an active fic (unfortunately). But for shorter stories it kinda just goes and goes until I feel like it’s a good end point which works out sometimes, which is what happened with Greasing My Wheels. It was like I just started and kept going and going until ending it just felt right.

Anyway, I just found it fascinating as I scrolled through Twitter and saw about 4 fic authors that I love all sharing a different approach to how they were getting chapters up either today or in the near future. I just found it interesting all the different ways that authors can write fic and just felt like making a post about it *shrugs*

(In present time after Waverly and Nicole are engaged) Can Can you do one where Nicole first had a slight crush on Wynonna before Waverly and her together, And Waverly gets all bothered and jealous? And Wynonna keeps making romantic/sex jokes about her and Nicole.(Then Rachel steps in and tells her how much Nicole loves her) [yes I'm aware how many "ands" there are in this one XD]

So way back when Nicole first came to Purgatory she first had a crush on Wynonna 

the pair spent a lot of time together just hanging out with each other and whatnot

(this is how Nicole learn more about Waverly)

anyways fast forward to the present and Waverly at this point knows about Nicole’s small crush on Wynonna

She actually jealous about it bc of Nicole’s crush on Wynonna

Waverly was never the jealous type but when she starts dating Nicole she becomes jealous

(like Waverly was super jealous of Shae and all of Nicole’s ex-girlfriends)

Now Waverly and Nicole are engaged Waverly thought everything will be fine and she would be less jealous

but Wynonna would joke about Nicole’s crush and make romantic and sexual jokes

Nicole being Nicole just laughs and tries to brush it off bc it’s Wynonna

but Waverly hates it when Wynonna makes these jokes bc she loves Nicole so much

she tries to tell Nicole and Wynonna this and Nicole stops but Wynonna continues doing it for a bit

Rachel would have one on ones with Waverly bc she knows how much Nicole loves her

no matter how many jokes Wynonna makes, Nicole only has eyes for Waverly

(Waverly is lowkey having flashbacks to Shae bc she also told Waverly that Nicole loves her so much)

Nicole can see how uncomfortable Waverly is and tells Wynonna to knock it off bc she doesn’t want to hurt Waverly

with that Wynonna stops all her jokes and teasing bc she can see Nicole truly loves Waverly and that she’ll do anything for her.

I saw the tumblr prompts for Hauntober week four and decided to do it for Wynonna Earp. I'm a bit behind due to classes and work, but the goal is to finish all seven by the end of the week.

This will be a series of one-shots, they likely won't be very long.
