This has been on my mind for quite awhile so I might as well say it now. Kafka got off scot-free with his first kaiju transformation. Yes it was painful but there are two reasons why I say this.

It finished stupidly fast as literal steam is practically coming off his kaiju body. Two was that nobody noticed him shifting at all, not even Ichikawa who only saw Kafka's foot moving erratically. Imagine if it had been different though.

Brutally graphic like in Altered Beast 2005 where human skin and meat explode/burn off/disintegrate/etc. Kafka's flesh turning to ash from cyan lightning as his body shifts. Nevermind lightning bolts shortcircuiting or electrocuting anything too close to him.

*transformation closest to this is at 4:37. Warning for intense gore and body horror!*

Or it could be similar to Sonic the Werehog from Sonic Unleashed. Scales began to spread across his body like a fast action disease, spikes begin to pierce out of his spinal column, head calcifying as his neck elongates and morph into an inhuman shape. Slower painful shift that would have nurses running.

Maybe something more unnatural like the Akiyuki's Xam'd transformation. His skull mask immediately appears on his face before an ocean of black goo erupts from it. The mass drowns Kafka's entire body as Reno desperately tries to claw it off.

Our himbo got off pretty lucky in the transformation department when you consider the alternate methods.

Super bummed about Xam'd not being legally available in the US. It hasn't really been available in years and was kind of set up to fail being a PSN exclusive when it came out.

It never really found its audience which is wild to think about because it was Studio Bones at the height of its power in 2009, fresh off of a decade of hits starting with the Cowboy Bebop movie up to Xam'd's contemporary in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood.

It's also such a clear spiritual successor to Eureka Seven (itself a pretty big hit at the time) feeling like a translation of a lot of its notes for a more mature audience with different aesthetic goals and some new thematic directions.

I really hope Xam'd gets a second chance someday in the English speaking world and gets the sort of promotion it deserves. It's been years since I've seen it but it's such a memorable experience!

theres something so tragic about furuichi teraoka. he feels like he lives in his friend Akiyuki's shadow, his unrequited crush on Haru, and then just when the story seems to hint that he could find something to live for other than those emotions - [redacted]

i think something the series suffers from is not enough time focusing on the characters specifically outside of the conflict & in furuichi s case ; while you can see through the imagery and what is said/ unsaid, it's not enough to give him a life outside of his envy of Akiyuki / crush on Haru / dealing with those feelings. In the 1st episode you see that he's got a playful side to him & that he really cares for his friends. It really feels like there was so much more to explore for him at least so far in the series & its a shame there was not enough time to show his other qualities. Because he got along well with Harus sister, he's dedicated & he cares about his town...and I really hoped after seeing [redacted] become a humanform with his own eyes & the result it was going to spark something in him to question what he and Haru were being taught about the war and their enemies...

i can also see how that's the theme of the series too that war & the negativity it breeds can only lead to hurt & harm , and unquestioned loyalty can be dangerous

But it feels like some missed opportunities writing wise but I'm only on episode 14 in the series so I'll just have to see where it goes.

X - Xam'd: Lost Memories

I had to share this upon seeing your Vampire AU and remembering an old childhood show.

There's an anime called Xam'd: Lost Memories. It's of the mecha genre but takes the concept in a different route. The key ones known as Xam'd are techno-organic born from humans who been infected by a unique symbiote called a Hiruko.

A union that is quite volatile first since both must have their emotions in sync or face various deadly consequences. Whether it be corrupting into an uncontrollable to becoming crystal, perish this way or lose their entire identity. The latter being why in the show Xam'd are called beings of lost memories.

You can say these specific mecha are powerful human weapons as they have various combat abilities from shapeshifting their limbs into weapons/shields, fire energy blasts and some wielding elements like water. Only when the Hiruko is in perfect sync with their human host can they easily switch between forms.

There's a risk of a Xam'd being stuck in this form unless someone knows how to handle. A situation made even difficult since a religious sect not only worship these mecha but can create new ones. Deal with a devil sort of thing as someone has to accept the help or risk the afflicted rampaging and turn into crystal.

I thought this might bring your interest whether you watch the show or not.

I have not seen the show, but this sounds like an interesting concept overall! A risk of being overtaken in exchange for power. I am always on board with such a trope.

the legacy of xam'd to me is the second op somehow being better than the killer first one and 12 centimeters.

4819: That's the Xam'd: Lost Memories "fandom" in a nutshell. There's basically no one at home, lol. The characters aren't amazingly in-depth and there is only, say, one outstanding romantic relationship in the entire show, so in a way, I can understand the lack of fandom. Fandoms are often sparked by the shipping potential of characters. But the creature designs were great and I found the lore, if not incomplete, to be pretty compelling, and I would've loved to see expansions on that.

[8.26.2023] so happy to have found a copy of Xam'd Lost Memories (part 1) on dvd & it came with the second part of the show😊 so far im on episode 5 and this series is so intriguing. there's something so special about original anime series ✨
