Okay I swear to God I hope the directors of avatar (the alien movie) sees this post somehow but the whole reason the way of water flopped so badly is cause it was written over 10 years ago. So I like avatar. I thought it was a cool concept and good characters and overall a solid action movie. But the characterisation is just a dacade old man. It's really outdated. It instantly turned me off when Jake was seen to be a 'hardass' to his kids, and having them call him Sir, and have Neytiri taking kind of a secondary role as the 'peacekeeper' parent who goes 'but your dad loves you, he just wants you safe' bullshit trope that's just really not what this generation is looking for rn.

Emotionally mature parents is what's on topic rn. Dad's that step up and know what they're doing and don't have the 2000s 'military hardass emotionally distant' bullcrap. Just look at all the other movies and shows with family themes that did really fucking well. The Last of Us. Ultraman: Rising. Nimona. Even Maleficent, which I think is one of the earliest movies of this trope that's well known. They did well for a reason. You can't make Jake Sully a bad father and think the current audience will dig it. All of his kids, one way or another felt the pressure of living up to their dad's expectations, and im sure, whether he really loves them. And I assure you for all intents and purposes it felt like Neteyam died thinking he wasnt enough. You can't have those 'your dad loves you but he just doesn't know how to show it' bullshit anymore and expect the audience to like or even relate to that character cause a lot of us don't take that shit anymore from our own parents. A lot of millennials are actively trying to be present and good parents to their kids. So yeah. The way Jake Sully, and to a certain extent, Neytiri were characterised is probably one of the biggest reasons this entire movie flopped. It could have been great. But it isn't. And I kind of hate it actually.

My point is: if there's gonna be a third movie, the best bet to make sure it doesn't follow the way of waters footsteps is to overhaul a lot of the characterisation and plot. See what the audience wants rn, and what they audience relates to. It was clear the writing to that movie was old as balls and gen z or gen alpha don't take that shit man. Give us good parents

Edit: okay as someone pointed it out it wasn't actually a 'flop' flop because they grossed by over a billion or smth in the box office I think but to be fair half this post has been sitting in my drafts for like 2 years and I wrote this soon after I watched it back then, and a LOT of people werent that happy with it. But yall know what I mean. I waited for this movie for 10 years and all I felt was this low simmering disappointment because it could have been so good, but it wasn't.

first of all please don't look at me weird just because the trailer showed suzume kissing a chair lmao i promise it's actually cute trust me

secomd of all i wasn't lying about the graphics and cinematography. that part where suzume and souta closes the first door? then it cuts to the title screen with the main theme echoing? goosebumps. i regretted talking during that part.

and that last part in the ever-after? yk this is good when it reminds you to howl and sophie under the stars. and souta hugging suzume saying, "i'll meet you again"? then suzume and souta meets again in the exact manner they first met? i see the makoto shinkai has a style and im loving it lmao.

another personal favorite, suzume saying, "i want to try too!" and souta going, "suzume wa dame da!" man's nervous getting sat on by a girl, i mean valid man💀 but you're a chair so that's that /lh

also i love how theres a lot of theme going on: found family, lost family, grievance, acceptance, serendipity, sacrifice, love, compassion, the cycle of life. i didn't exactly cry but i have a feeling i will if i try hard enough lmaoo suzume and souta are so dear to me, and serizawa and tamaki and everyone, they're good ppl :')

some things i'm still mulling about though,

didn't suzume said, "mr. good-looking man, i feel like we've before?" then went, "oh shoot, i sound like i'm shooting my shot." this makes me wonder if suzume is really having that sense of deja-vu bevause otherwise, why would she ditch school and go look for some handsome man who asked her for directions? what i'm curious about is what suzume is actually feeling that time. deja-vu? deja-vu from where? either i'm trippin here or i was just not paying attention loll

mortals won't be able to cross the door to the ever-after. but smol-suzume can do that, and the big-suzume can do that via the same door. is it because her desire to find the person on the other side of the door so strong?

all in all it was a good movie. if someone makes an AU out of this i'm gonna eat that up 😩 lol imagine chuuya or kunikida being cursed to a chair by an ability or the like, and they're just frantically pattering around as we (or dazai, obvsly) get ourselves in danger 24/7 in trying to lift the curse.

because the school year is coming to a close, things around me at work have been pretty intense, so i've been tossed around like a ragdoll the past week and haven't had much time to write as a result. i also haven't been sleeping very well and rush a lot in the mornings, so i've forgotten to take my mood stabilizer the past couple of days which makes me v sluggish, zombie-ish and unpleasant in general. :/

...when i am like that, as a weird way of sparing you, i suppose, i try not to post on here too much because it feels quite shitty indeed for you to get a notification for my blog just to watch me bitch n moan.

however, i have taken my medication today and feel bad for fumbling kyle week...as we know i'm not really good at holding myself accountable or making deadlines. oddly enough, it's not that i don't want to answer my questions, it's just that other than not being able to really find the time recently, i just can't find the right...words?

or, rather, i don't feel knowledgeable enough the subjects to answer? specifically in the areas of my tsot/tfbw styles and ncuniverses, i feel a little insecure because i don't know sp or the games as well as many other people do, so i'm trying to speed watch episodes/watch speed runs of the games online so i can at least keep some canon intact?

i also am finding that creating and understanding how high fantasy universes work is...difficult? lmao? also because i did crazy stuff with mutations and science and politics in my tfbw ncuniverse, that's also complicated and out of my wheelhouse...tldr: i have big ideas, but i'm not very good at backing them in fact or doing analytical stuff.

but...iiiiii need to, lmao. mental illness, but if i make a universe it has to be fully realized, it has to all make as much sense as possible, echo the canon, enhance it, feel real and be fluid...so if i'm not around too much it's because i'm trying to bolster myself with my sp knowledge ( ik, i'm a fake fan ) and watch/read/research high fantasy concepts and superhero/scientific fiction/dystopian stuff...so if anyone has any recommendations for me to watch or learn from in those realms, i'd appreciate it. again, this is intense...but i care a lot about my craft.

and specifically crafting something worthy of all of you, that makes sense, lives and breathes, reflects the show we love & is interesting.
