I've been too nice to Dazai recently with my metas. I feel the urgent need to roast him to restore balance to the universe.
Anyways what do you mean your mentee scared you so you stopped your literal heart to momentarily terrify him into thinking you'd died from shock. What the hell do you mean "the only way I knew how to reward you was showing you my secret technique which is cardiac arrest" - shut up dude. You are a petty little control freak with a just barely hidden competitive streak a mile wide who had to win the scaring contest
Dazai, after Atsushi scares him once: "Oh no! My aura of unflappable mystery! To regain my honour, I must immediately and momentarily die about it!"
jerk.

since we know nothing about dazai's childhood what if he really did grow up with chuuya, before the boy was taken away to a lab and lost all of his memories
what if they were best friends back then, the type of kids you would never see without each other, the type of kids who were more often than not sleeping over and hanging out at each other's houses, the kind of kids that were inseparable and stuck to each other's side
especially with their abilities being so similar yet compete opposites (running with the theory that chuuya's og ability was ability-amplification) it was as if they were fated to be together. two halves of a whole and all jazz that you know how it is with these two.
and then chuuya is abducted from his school to get dragged into the lab. there's no explanation, other than the one given by the government later on, citing that he died as a casualty in the war or whatever.
Dazai, the smart kid that he is, definitely knows something is up but can't figure it out. he doesn't know why his best friend was taken away and was heartbroken.
meanwhile chuuya in the lab desperately clinging onto his memories of home and his best friend as a way to cope. Of course, eventually all those memories are erased, and then he has nothing.
many years later, and these two meet again, chuuya kicking dazai into the ground. It had been years, but dazai recognizes his best friend anywhere. hes glad that he's okay (well, as okay as a leader of a juvenile street gang with an ability can be). He quickly realizes that Chuuya's memories of him are gone, however, and that his ability has changed.
Still, even with all those differences, even with all theyve grown, even with all their time apart, dazai knows thats his chuuya. Their souls still resonate with each other.
As for Chuuya, he doesn't understand why he feels such a connection from this odd, bandaged kid from the Port Mafia. it isn't until he learns of his past after the events of Stormbringer that he starts looking more into his past on his own (thanks to the flags for giving him a head start). he finds pictures from his school, and oddly sees a kid resembling Dazai in his pictures more often than not.
confused, he confronts dazai about it one day, and dazai's just like "aww, it's our old school photos!" Chuuya keeps pestering dazai about it, who refuses to elaborate for a good while, thinking chuuya getting all riled up about it was funny, before realizing how important this was to the both of them conceding.
Dazai tells him all about his best friend from elementary school, how Chuuya wasn't really all that different from how he is now. He tells him about how Chuuya had loved dogs even as a kid. He tells him about the time Chuuya got into a fight and ended up with pencil lead in his arm, which Dazai would always joke about. Dazai ends off his explanation with how Chuuya had disappeared one day, and how sad that left him.

Dazai to Odasaku about Akutagawa: "If I'd left him to his own devices, he would've ended up a slave to his own powers until he destroyed himself."
Hey hi what does that mean???
I'm probably way overthinking it but it just reminded me of when I first started my watch of the anime and we get to the opening scene with Akutagawa and Rashoumon (I can't find the exact scene but here's something similar from DA)
He implies he's not attacking with her so much as he's reining her in from devouring everything - and originally I thought, hey, that's a cool premise. It seems like there's something odd about this guy's ability; he's talking about it like it's almost sentient.
But then it didn't really get brought up again so I kind of forgot about it.
And sure maybe all the above line means is that his ability is naturally attuned to violence and he could grow more bloodthirsty, etc - but if that's the case, why bring him into the mafia?
So I started thinking about Dead Apple (which I really need to rewatch...) and how there was this focus on Atsushi as the "antithesis" of special abilities. And I just kind of thought about that because... wouldn't that title go to Dazai...?
But then it's stated that Atsushi's claws can cut through any ability... including Rashoumon (he also has some connection to the Book which absolutely must be related somehow but I'm skipping over that for the purposes of this post). Dazai describes Akutagawa as "a sword without a sheath". Is Atsushi part of the sheath? It would make a degree of sense: after all, we get a sharp reminder in the movie of how imperative it is that Dazai nullifies Chuuya's ability - it is literally needed to keep Corruption in check.
But why such a focus on self-destruction and sheathing... unless there really is something dangerous that needs to be reined in? That needs to be controlled.
I think about the dragon in Dead Apple called the "chaos of all special abilities".
I think about how the tiger and dragon are another representation of yin and yang. I think about how Atsushi and Akutagawa so clearly have that yin-yang dynamic. I think about how Rashoumon very well has the appearance of a hungry snake - or a dragon.
I think about how the focal point of an entire altered timeline was the prevention of Akutagawa from joining the mafia and the taking of his sister. And then I wonder why Akutagawa always seems to factor into Dazai's plans.
I think there's something special about Akutagawa's ability.
I think that something special, whatever it is, is very dangerous - more than we know.

So we all know this scene, right?
And we know how Dazai tries to handle it by pretending to be a scared kid and Chuuya interrupts him to challenge the guy to a fight, because I have been thinking about these tactics recently.
Dazai is not really mafia at this point, this is his first mission. He's still somewhat naive to the world of gangs, even if he's witnessed it, he's not lived it like Chuuya has. This tactic of acting like a scared little kid, definitely feels like something Dazai pulled when trying to get away with things around regular adults. I mean, look how easily he turns on those tears, it's practiced, he's used to it working.
He's responding to what the guy is saying, he calls them "kids" and looks confused as to why kids are here. Dazai then selects the defenceless innocent act as a way to get out of being held at gun point and possibly get information.
He's used to this kind of thing working, but the fact is, if Chuuya hadn't interrupted him, it most likely wouldn't of. Because Dazai doesn't know the type of enemy he's up against, he doesn't know these people are willing to cross the line and harm kids yet.
Look at these panels closely. The panel before Dazai starts faking crying the gun is pointed directly at him,
whilst he starts his crying act in the panels previously mentioned, the gun is still squarely on him, and afterwards
In the top panel it is still pointing at him, until Chuuya speaks. His tactic isn't working. The enemy never wavers or lowers his gun, he either doesn't believe Dazai or doesn't care.
Chuuya sees that. He sees the gun still pointing at Dazai. He looks annoyed in the first panel above because this man, as far as he knows, is pointing a gun at an innocent kid.
And as soon as Chuuya speaks, the gun shifts to him. Chuuya, King of Sheep, protector and shield. A boy so used to defending those weaker than him, he smiles when he's able to get the attention of a man holding a gun. As far as Chuuya is concerned at this point, Dazai might as well be as defenceless as the rest of The Sheep. Sure, he has his ability No Longer Human, but what good is that against a grown man with a gun? So Chuuya defends him the same way he defends his friends.
And he makes sure to keep that attention on him whilst he tests this man. Yeah, we know he puts his head to the gun to transfer his ability, but I also think it's important that Chuuya waits in this moment. He doesn't just take this guy out because of a perceived threat, he waits until it's confirmed. Chuuya doesn't throw the first punch because Chuuya doesn't start fights, he fights back. Just like The Sheep said, he hits their enemies back a thousand times harder.
Dazai complains Chuuya interrupted him here, but Dazai was completely out of his depth in this moment. Chuuya didn't ruin his plan, he saved his life.
