taehyun had been something between a secret lover and a stranger in the past few months. over the course of your frail affiliation, you jump between thinking that the world was testing you by sending over a guy who would kiss your forehead in the comfort of your dorm room but never look you in the eye in-front of his friends; to being so overtaken by infatuation each time you see his bare skin against your sheets, the sun kissing him on places you’ve found yourself feathering over the night before.
the daydream always shatters when you wake the morning after and the only remnants of his existence within your bedroom are the stains on your bed and the warmth of his body clinging desperately onto where he slept. it’s easy for that dream to rekindle every night; because when taehyun’s at your doorstep with a huge grin on his face, you can’t help but leap into his arms.
when you feel the sun joining you in bed and instead of a phantom of his physique, you find taehyun sound asleep next to you; you can’t fall back asleep. you prop yourself on your side, cheek pressed on your hand and elbow holding your weight, admiring the rare view bestowed upon you. you think it won’t be as rare to see now that taehyun’s your boyfriend — a newly-formed title that came into fruition just yesterday. it wasn’t the most romantic way to ask, settling for a conversation on this very bed after showering together. 
it went along the lines of you saying:
“i’m starting to like you a lot, taehyun.” 
your back is against his chest, situated between his legs. “yeah?” you etch taehyun’s half-smile, half-smirk in your mind as he plays with your hair. it almost feels like he’s finally in the room with you, not drifting away, someplace else, when you confess. you push the thought to back of your head when you feel his chest rumble from a laugh. “have i stolen your heart yet?” 
“...y/n, you thief.”
“am not!” you refute, silly smile stretching your lips, cheeks swelling from the searing affection taehyun offers. it probably burns, but you can’t resist – not when you’re usually off scraping corners of his lukewarm responses and icy texts. 
“can i keep it though?” the tone of your voice is hopeful, and taehyun doesn’t have it in him to say anything but yes. he doesn’t know why he does this, is it because you’re nice? the girl you love should probably have more words under her belt than nice. but that’s what taehyun settles for. 
you’re so nice that taehyun doesn’t even have to spew out the question. 
“can i be your girlfriend, i mean.” you clarify, assuming the silence on his end stemmed from confusion. or that’s what you’ve convinced yourself these kind of moments were; the times where taehyun reels back in and decides you’ve seen enough of his kinder gestures for the time being. 
he nods.
giddy, anxious, once again hauled into infatuation; these are the things that culminate in your chest as you watch taehyun stir. 
you don’t bother to look away once his eyes flutter open, wincing at the light sneaking between your blinds. “morning, boyfriend.” his lips curve into a small smile, “morning, girlfriend.”
you sit up expectantly, wanting to start the day with all these ideas that have been blossoming since you started liking taehyun. things like making pancakes when he finally stayed long enough until the morning, or simpler ideas like struggling to leave the bed and being tugged back into his arms, “five more minutes…” tickling your nape as he nuzzles into you. 
your ideas start to dwindle when taehyun’s first course of action is to pick up his phone and look through his texts. you’re left blinking, confused by the nonchalance that clouded the air in your room. you should be used to this by now. the push and pull was always what made you come back to him anyway; but in your brain, after the intimacy of last night, you had hoped that taehyun’s hot-and-cold would begin to melt.
you don’t want to think about it. giving taehyun the benefit of the doubt is always easier than having to recode your mind to admitting that you just like him a lot more than he does you. you already have a boatload of excuses piled up from all the times you had to defend your crush on him from your friends; always something about “he’s never had a serious relationship, he doesn’t know!” or “he’s just not that kind of guy, y’know..”
instead, you’re pushing yourself out of bed, and that is thankfully enough for taehyun to look up in surprise.

you’re sitting in the back of his friend yeonjun’s car the next time taehyun invites you outside of your stay-at-home ‘dates’. 
you’re squished between two long-legged boys, soobin and kai, while beomgyu called dibs on the very back, using the excuse of “somebody needs to hold our shit from falling” as a guise for wanting to catch up on sleep. taehyun’s in front with yeonjun, chatting with a carefree smile.
that kind of smile was reserved for people you knew taehyun held no doubt for. the kind of people that taehyun’s already settled into and signed his lease. you’re a hostel in taehyun’s unknowing search for a home, you start to think.
but you’re young, and there’s plenty of time for renovations and renewals. maybe in a few months time, taehyun’s “nice” and “cute” will turn into “beautiful” and “kind-hearted.” in a few months time, you’ll be more than a place to lounge and leave; perhaps even earn his breathless laughs and sparkling eyes. 
today, your destination is a barred cliff overlooking the view of your hometown. beomgyu suggested watching the sundown before spring started, ever the romantic. he’s also the reason taehyun even bothered to bring you; the invite making you audibly gasp over the phone when he called, asking just half an hour before they were set to go. taehyun always did that — made plans and canceled; only to call you a few hours later, when the sinking feeling finally set in and you were ready to push it to the backburner, saying “i’m coming over.”
you’re leaning against the side of yeonjun’s car, taehyun on the edge of the hood and the rest of the boys scattered just around the front. by the time you’ve arrived, the chill of the upcoming night was beginning to creep up. 
kai picks up on how much you’re feeling the cold. your teeth are chattering, and your posture hunched into your own body, arms crossed and trying to keep yourself as warm as you could. he blinks at taehyun’s apathy. you’re right next to him, there is no way he couldn’t hear the way your teeth crash against one another, or the hisses you unconsciously spew. 
“dude, y/n looks like she’s dying.” kai finally speaks up, interrupting the flow of conversation between his friends.
all five turn to look at you. you feel like you’re being watched like a wild animal at the zoo, scowling at beomgyu’s laughter. his teasing begins, taking advantage of being on taehyun’s other side, sprawled on the hood. he pokes his friend’s forearms, “yeah, tyunnie, y/n looks like she’s dying. why don’t you go warm her up?” his mischievous antics have your heartbeat picking up. you don’t know whether to thank him or jump him.
you’re anxious, for some reason; but you’re also wide-eyed and expectant. you’ve been dating taehyun for a month now and his friends have been warming up to your relationship, though you can’t get beomgyu’s words out of your head — much like now. 
you recall it was at one of yeonjun’s parties.
beomgyu hovered around you and taehyun that night, tipsy for the first time in a while. the air was silent, each breath clinging onto the question that beomgyu spilled that night: 
“why don’t you ever do anything.. like.. couple-y with y/n? i swear- i’ve only seen you makeout. and that was before you even started dating!”
beomgyu always seemed to know the pain points of your sluggish relationship.
taehyun rolls his eyes at beomgyu’s jabs, though his smile reflects different from the snarky glint in his eyes. you don’t know what he’ll do. will he tug at your arm and pull you over his lap, wrap his arms around you? say “i’ll keep her warm, don’t worry.” and keep you close for the rest of the evening, until the stars wake from their slumber?
your arms are wide open for anything. any semblance of affection or care, anything to make you feel like taehyun isn’t just keeping you for the sake of avoiding being the primary source of your heartbreak. sometimes, it felt like he kept tabs on you like someone who had forgotten about a game they once liked, habitually coming back but never in the same intensity. you remember how he looked at you so hungrily the first time you met. you only ever get glimpses of his twinkling eyes when he has you under him.
your boyfriend shrugs his jacket off and pushes it in your direction, barely looking at your pitiful state. this time, even beomgyu knows to hold his tongue when you both share the same look of disappointment and confusion at taehyun’s frigidity. taehyun resumes his conversation with soobin, though the latter boy awkwardly smiles at you, dimples providing some comfort. 
“thanks,” you mutter, holding the jacket to your chest before slipping your arms through the sleeves. you don’t feel much warmer, even with the makeshift feeling of taehyun’s body heat radiating from the inside of his jacket, right on your bare skin. 
you’re not sure if it’s the wind that’s keeping you shivering, or the awful feeling that you’ve made the wrong choice.

“why don’t we ever go on dates, taehyun?” you quiz, half-curious and half-unprepared for the answer you’re going to get. if you get to that point. but tonight, you’re determined to know.
it’s been four months since you and taehyun have started dating, and nothing much has changed from where you started. except for the fact that taehyun thinks he’s starting to get better at keeping you at bay; knowing the right words to say at the right time, being aware of your weak points and using his kisses as a way to sway your lips away from yet another important conversation.
“what do you mean, babe?” he only calls you that when he wants to shut you down. “we just had one. the movie marathon yesterday?” 
“no, i mean–” your voice is stuck in your throat. taehyun often has that effect on you. at first, starstruck from seeing him at a frat party; then, when he’s pushing your head down onto the pillow as you tremble beneath him; and now, too cowardly to know how he truly feels about you, but too fed-up not knowing.
“i mean outside dates,” you explain, fingers fiddling aimlessly with each other, trying your best to keep looking at taehyun. he’s sitting across from you, on your bed, again. this godforsaken place that started the turmoil in the first place. “we never do anything planned. we don’t even go out for anniversaries or anything, tyunnie.” you hope the nickname softens the blow.
“i just like being at home with you, love.” taehyun answers gently, like he knows he’s treading on dangerous grounds right now. he doesn’t want to hurt you, and he doesn’t want you blaming him for anything that happens once you’re just another travel stamp on his life; permanently a memory. 
despite his consistent nonchalance towards you, taehyun can admit to himself that not having you around would be odd. it would be inconvenient, would be the better word to describe it. your hopes of becoming more than “nice” and “cute” have transformed to something arguably worse; now, you’re “helpful” and “grounding.” 
he couldn’t survive without you, but not for the passionate, romantic reasons you long for. taehyun knows this; that he loves the familiarity of you more than he likes you. he likes the heat that radiates off your body more than your body itself; the habits you’ve grown into that he’s responsible for, like the pancakes you make every sunday morning or how you’re always prepared to run to him when he needs you. he doesn’t remember you calling for him like that (though he doesn’t know if he would drop anything as fast as you had done).
“taehyun.” 
“what..?”
“you don’t really mean that,” you shake your head, now unable to keep your eyes trained on him. you opt for the solid colour of your sheets.
“why are you.. doubting me?” 
“because you’re never here!” your voice is strained; you try to say it in some sort of yell, but it comes out as a desperate screech. “and i mean your mind. your heart. whatever the fuck it is. your body’s here, but you’re always drifting somewhere else!”
you keep going. your mouth is spilling words like a waterfall, the most you’ve ever truthfully said in taehyun’s presence. “you don’t even like being around me. you do just enough to keep us alive, and then you half-ass it until you have to fix it again. what– what kind of relationship is this?”
“babe, wait,” taehyun’s moved from his spot now, laying his palms flat on your shoulders and trying to ease your outburst. you’re starting to sob, hiccups replacing your words. “i-i’m sorry if i made you feel that way–”
“if?” you scoff, and taehyun is taken aback. you’ve been rather docile and forgiving for most of the time taehyun has known you, only ever yelling at beomgyu that one time. 
“i mean– i’m sorry that i made you feel that way, baby..” he soothes you, taking your hands and trying to get you close. 
“i think we should stop here.” your words are firm in spite of the trembles underneath. 
taehyun pauses. it’s the first time you’ve seen him display some sort of fear over you. 
“no, no, no,” he’s desperately clutching your hands to his chest, bringing your knuckles to his lips and pressing kisses to the back of your hand. “it’s only been a few months. i’m just going through something right now, baby. i promise.”
your courage only takes you so far, because you let taehyun toy with your hands, bring his face close enough to make you fluster and cave.
he puts your intertwined hands down, a thud against your unassuming mattress. taehyun’s saving face by pressing his forehead against yours, lips hovering over one another. “i’ll make it better. i’ll be better, i swear.”
so you do. you cave. 
when you feel his lips on yours, you know you’re doomed to unwrap the fabric and find you’re still bloodied; that your relationship is bound to break its fragile bones beyond repair. still, another empty kiss bandages over the scabs and wounds you’ve accumulated over the course of your ‘love’ and you make-believe that it isn’t too bad. not at all.

As The World Falls Down
Okay, I have THOUGHTS
Once in the Underground, we get three songs sang by Bowie: Dance Magic, As The World Falls Down, and Within You, but what makes As The World Falls Down different from the other two, is that it is the only one that Jareth doesn't sing, despite being sung by Bowie.
Sure, we get Jareth mouthing along to a line or two while dancing with Sarah, but he isn't exactly performing the song like with the other two. So why does this matter (to me at least)? I propose that this song is about Jareth, at least in part. (You can also make the interpretation that maybe he is singing this song about Sarah, but, man, he is definitely projecting.)
Like, this song has a about a half minute long instrumental intro, and the lyrics do not start until the camera is trained tightly on Jareth, it pans back to Sarah for a moment, but for the majority of the first three lines (There's such a sad love | Deep in your eyes | A kind of pale jewel) it is on Jareth, and obviously this could imply Jareth is the "speaker", but given that this song is playing over the scene as opposed to being a part of the scene like the other two songs, I think it's fair to read it as a narration, at least in part. So it's Jareth who has the sad love within his eyes (which, like, maybe I'm projecting here but doesn't he look kinda sad in this scene? Despite being face to face with a clearly awestruck Sarah, which is what we're lead to believe is what he wants?)
Pan back to Sarah, Jareth disappears, and the camera follows her through the ballroom, it stays on Sarah of the majority of the next few lines, BUT it pans ever so briefly back to Jareth on "such a fooled heart" and "in search of new dreams". Now I can interpret that in many different ways (and man, I promise you that I have), but the most dominating thought to me, takes me to the end of the movie. Jareth thinks if he offers her enough, she will stay with him and love him, he's fooled himself into thinking he can keep her. Not to mention the recurring theme of dreams, hell this scene is literally happening in a dream. Is he searching for new dreams to entice her with? Has he already been heart broken at some point and in his own search of a new dream, he found her? (I mean the literal next line is "A love that will last" while the camera is trained on Sarah. In this context, the word dream absolutely has romantic connotations) Both? Neither? Something in between? Who knows.
The camera stays on Sarah for "As the pain sweeps through | Makes no sense for you | Every thrill is gone" but then we focus on Jareth for "Wasn't too much fun at all", and yeah, he's smiling and being the little shit that he is, but may I ask you, WHO is the one seeking thrills throughout this movie? Certainly not Sarah, she wants to be done with it all, she wants her brother safe and to go back home. Jareth is the one that keeps interjecting himself into Sarah's journey, wearing disguises and upping stakes and giving out magic peaches. And how do we find Jareth at the end of the film? Within You is a song of lament, he begs Sarah to stay with him in the final confrontation, and when everyone Sarah has met along her journey is partying it up in her room, Jareth is alone outside in his owl form. That's doesn't seem very fun to me.
I'll be honest this is where my analysis of the song in tandem with the scene (dare I say music video) kind of falls apart. Camera pans to Jareth for "And I'll be there for you" and "though we're strangers 'til now | We're choosing the path" and "I'll leave my love | Between the stars" Then the two are dancing together. Some lines repeat (here's where we get him mouthing along to the words/speaking to her.) And then end scene with Sarah shattering the bubble.
BUT, just because the visual analysis leaves something to be desired, does not mean that we cannot still interpret the lyrics. Notably, I want to point out the lines "We're choosing the path | Between the stars | I'll leave my love | Between the stars". Baby boy, who is we? As much of a Sarah/Jareth truther as I am, I can acknowledge that Sarah is pretty lukewarm to most of his advances throughout the film (because like, dude, you kidnapped her brother, she is not happy with you). This hearkens back to the "fooled heart" thing cause he's convinced himself that this is a mutual longing (and tbf she's pretty enamored with him in this scene, but this is the exception, not the rule for her so far, so maybe he thinks he's finally starting to get through to her? idk). This also parallels the line from Within You of "I move the stars for no one" and man is he upset when he sings that line, but we never see him to anything that could really count as "moving the stars". We see him mess with time, and spacial things, but the only time the word stars even shows up is in these two songs. Jareth has moved the stars to make room for their love, and she has rejected that love. It infuriates him.
I know this more of a train-of-thought word vomit, than a proper analysis, but this movie is so many things at once, no matter what angle you're coming at it from. There is no tidy interpretation that wraps everything up nice and neatly, and honestly that's what makes this movie so great and timeless. I've just had this idea batting around in my head all day and needed to get it out. I hope this makes any kind of sense to anyone else lol
Side note: What the fuck is up with the dude in the goblin skull mask? Jareth switches places with him at one point (bone mask disappears out of frame, and then Jareth comes into view the next second with the same two women in the same positions) and is pretty much staring directly at Sarah every time he's in frame, but like he's not Jareth cause we see them in the same frame together briefly and that dude is circling the crowd when things start spinning out of control, but notably Sarah is still dancing with Jareth. Skull mask has always stood out to me in the ballroom scene and I feel like he's important, but fuck if I know how he plays into all of this.

so when I got to what to title the finale of the trilogy I wanted to keep the theme of like water ie midnight rain and the lakes, at first I was going to title it silver springs but decided to go with the river because I felt like some of the lyrics felt more fitting for that specific portion of the story I was telling
like reader is hijacked, they're trying to hold onto their relationship so desperately through it all even though she's scared, and they belong together, need each other, but also there's times when they are so lonely by the emotional distance caused by the Captiol hijacking

but additionally they're soulmates, meant to be and when it's good it's good, they are just so codependent though

A debated opinion but I wouldn’t mind if Can I Have This Dance is a full group song with each couple having their own part, preferentially during Homecoming/Prom because that would be so cute, that if Rina gets Right Here Right Now and I Just Wanna Be With You because it’s more meaningful since it fits their whole arc.
In fact, High School Musical 3 as the school production for the season Rina is a couple and Ricky is a senior is perfect. Look at those lyrics:
Everything about Rina has been about change.
Ricky's fear of change and Gina's life constantly changing so she dosn't allow herself to think too far ahead but Ricky is been her yes. So for Right Here Right Now, if Rina’s arc for S4 is like I predict it will with them feeling unsure about their future because is Ricky's last year at East High and now their whole public relationship with everyone inserting themselves into it then the lyrics fit just right: "I'd wish this moment was ours to own it and that it would never leave" and then with being afraid of the future and linking it to Gina’s speech about her life being all about maybe and holding onto the present and the journey: "Right here, I promise you somehow that tomorrow can wait for some other day to be, but right now there's you and me". Ricky’s senior year/decisions approaching: "We know it's coming and it's coming fast (but right now, there's you and me) so let's make every second last". And we back again with the theme of change: "A bend in the universe is gonna make everything in our whole world change (it's changing) and you know that where we are will never be the same". It’s prefect for a moment when they're feeling like nothing is going like they want it to because of their fame and time is running out.
Then there’s Just Wanna Be With You: "You know how life can be. It changes over night. It's sunny then raining but it's alright. A friend like you, always make it easy. I know that you get me every time. Through every up. Through every down. You know I'll always be around. Through anything you can count on me." I mean, "I thought we sort of got each other" is pretty self explanatory for them and it really highlights the rollercoaster that has been their journey though out all these four seasons.
Actually, I can see this song being sang by two different couples (the full song does), the first part for Ryan and Kelsey on the piano (could be Seblos) and Rina taking it off from where Troy and Gabriella start since it’s the part that fits their relationship and most of it till the end kind of like in the movie version (the rehearsal, not the actual show). I can see that song being Rina focused but with the other couples as backup.
And even Gabriella's solo Walk Away is so Gina coded and it mentions change. This song is when Gabriella had to leave East High earlier because she got an early admission into college. "I guess I should've known better to believe that my luck had changed. I let my heart and forever. Finally learn each other's name. I tell myself this time is different, no goodbyes 'cause I can bear to say it. I'll never survive the ones that's coming if I stay. Just walk away and don't look back 'cause if my heart breaks it's gonna hurt so bad. You know I'm strong but I can't take that." And I just remember Kristoff Lullaby: "You light the world for me. You live life fearlessly, braver than the braver of us do" and Ricky’s “Gina’s a fighter and she’ll come back for opening night” Like, Gina is Gabriella. I'm sorry, she's so her coded.
And we know there's only one person that can sing Scream and that's Ricky Bowen and the line: "Yeah, the clock's running down, hear the crowd getting loud. I'm consumed by the sound. Is it her? Is it love? Can the music ever be enough?" that's Ricky Bowen coded. I can imagine him singing this when he is feeling overwhelmed about having to make decisions about his future, about music, about having to be away from Gina. Josh would eat this bad.
CIHTD is aesthetically iconic but the lyrics can apply to every couple on the show so I wouldn’t mind that one being a group song with all the pairings together singing some parts because it would look pretty cute on a big scale dance. “A Night To Remember” needs to happen too. Like, it’s basically a need for them to do this.

...in reference to my other meta post because i just cannot shut up about this hedgehog, for all my disagreements with shth, the music slaps and it's kind of ironic that the lyrics portray the themes of him desperately trying to grab hold of his own fate and have some autonomy better than the actual game does. "i am (all of me)" and "all hail shadow" are probably two of my favorite sonic tracks for just that reason.
they're obviously supposed to be about black doom/the black arms and shadow's internal conflict and confusion about his identity, but i think they work just as well as anthems for coming out the other side of immense tragedy and learning to how to find your footing again, to live and stop letting others dictate who you are and what you should do. they can be looked at as defiant songs, sung in the face of shadow's abusers, manipulators, and anyone who tries to hurt the world he swore to maria that he'd protect.

"i am (all of me)" is a dare for anyone to try to sway him, and a declaration that no matter what people try to make of him, or which memories of his are real or fabricated, he belongs to no one but himself. he's complete, and he is his own.
"all hail shadow" is similar, but even cockier and more obviously triumphant:

it's not just a dare, it's a threat and a promise that he'll keep fighting anything that endangers those he loves or what he believes is right, and he won't stop until he's won. it's also a song about victory ("nothing can stop you now / no ghost to bring you down" and "determination of the strong / found the meaning that you / searched for so long"); he's finally found his purpose and realized that he can decide his own path, he doesn't have to be anyone's puppet anymore.
there's a moment in sonic '06 where mephiles questions shadow's choice to keep fighting when he knows that the world will never understand and likely turn against him, and shadow, no hesitation, tells him: "if the world chooses to become my enemy, i will fight like i always have." and i am SO, soooooooooo in love with this moment, because i feel like it encapsulates everything shadow believes, and reflects the alternative messages that could be derived from his themes in his title game.
shadow is driven not by selfishness but by a personal sense of justice and the determination to keep his promise to his oldest and dearest friend. sometimes that justice doesn't line up with sonic's, but that's okay.
he's just!! he can be an aggressive, broody asshole, yeah, and he's edgy at times, sure, but he is so much more than that. the cold, quiet, unaffected persona is a wall he puts up to keep the people he loves at a safe, arm's length. he's not always a tryhard... sometimes he's just traumatized.

Ok, last post about Wish for now, I promise! A few years ago, I was writing a lot of short-ish analyses on various Disney Movies, and I remember I actually wrote one for Wish based only on the song This Wish! So I thought it would be fun to go through my analyses from over a year ago and see how correct I was now that I’ve actually seen the movie…
The black text is all direct quotes from what I wrote over a year ago. The purple is my comments on it now.

Considering that it is over a year until this movie comes out (the current date is 9/12/22), I am fully aware how ridiculous it is that I’m already writing an analysis on it. The main character, Asha, appears to be princess-like, although she may not be actual royalty. (I personally think she isn’t royal or high-ranking at all, since I think that will work better with the story and themes). That is actually true, although I still think she is Disney Princess coded. When I listened to More for Us (This was the original title for This Wish) the other day, I was literally crying, and that is with it out of context. It is a beautiful song that combines the simple magic of The Golden Age with the power of the universal truths and complex themes of The Revival Era. It is a perfect I-want song, and showcases Disney at its heart as a beautiful celebration for its 100th anniversary.

I finally found the lyrics to More for Us! (This Wish) Now that I have the lyrics, I can analyze the song properly. Also, after reading the lyrics, I’ve changed my mind about what I think the themes will be and where the story will go. Seriously, by giving us the I-want song, Disney gave us the most valuable single piece of information they could give. I have a LOT to say about these lyrics. Who is “us”? Now, I’m thinking that either she is part of a minority group in her kingdom, ehhhh, that is not true or that this is kind of a kingdom where the rulers (presumably the people who live in the tall palace-like building on the left side of the concept art) control/harm the people in some way. That was spot on. Knowing Disney, I would assume the first option, but the way she says “open their eyes to all lies” implies some sort of combination of the two options. I’m thinking that themes could be something like, action, making choices, standing up, etc. I will stand by those themes, in a way. They certainly aren't the only ones, but they are definitely present (think “if not us, then who and when” from Knowing What I Know Now. I would also say a theme is how knowing the truth can change your perspective. And a bit about willful ignorance in the way that the people unquestioningly gave their wishes to Magnifico because it was easier than trying to pursue them themselves. It appears that Asha is on the edge of something when she sings this. She’s had some sort of realization that sets her apart from everyone else in her world, but she hasn’t taken the step to act on it yet (“I’m past dipping my toes in, but not past diving in”). By challenging Magnifico and learning about the wishes, she’s gone too far to go back to her life just as it was, but she hasn’t made a decision on how to act on this yet, but she knows she needs to. By the end of the song, she has made her decision to act on her realization/feelings. Mhhhmmm not quite. I think she knows she needs to act already when she starts singing, she just doesn't know how. And that’s what Star shows her. She gains strength and confidence throughout the song. It acts as an I-want and a catalyst, as most of the recent I-want songs do. Yeah, that is definitely true. I find it interesting that the I-want itself was the catalyst, but I love it. It feels very Disney. Asha says “the way you always taught me to.” Who is “you”? My guess would be some sort of (likely dead) mentor figure like a parent or grandparent. Yeah, Disney’s pretty predictable with the dead parents. It does make sense story wise though. Whether this is the case or not, whoever “you” is has clearly had a significant impact on Asha, her personality, her values, and how she views the world. They will be an important part of the story, even if they’ve died before the movie begins. Her father was actually mentioned directly less than I predicted, but I still think that what he taught her about the stars’ guidance stuck with her and is the reason she wished on one to begin with. So in a way, her dad did have a big impact on the story, just in a less obvious way. And he definitely affected how Asha views the world and how she chooses to respond to what she learned while in the palace.

okay to keep myself on task so I don't just ramble for like 5k words, I'm going to treat this a top 10 list and this is going to specifically be for my widobrave playlist because she is my baby and I've been working on her for a long time and you know what? the wb tag deserves a little love. I'm going to try to spotlight different songs than I talked about before, too, for diversity's sake
this is absolutely going to get long, so I'll put the rest under the cut.
1: I And Love And You, The Avett Brothers
oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. What is there to say that the song does not say itself? There are a few ways I think this song could be interpreted depending on how you're reading the lyrics, but the line "that woman she got eyes that shine/like a pair of stolen polished dimes" is so fucking good and so Veth this will always be a top song for me. Also need to shout out the "the dream's the catch/the world's the cage" line in this one, because that has always made me think back to Heart in a Cage--I consider them related in my own personal widobrave lyrical thematic universe. Verdict: The vibes are excellent. The Avett brothers always pull through for me
2. Summertime, MCR
obviously this was going to show up in wb song list for me because I named one of my fics after this song! I've always associated summer with wb anyway, but the additional layer of the summer camp and that being a time they specifically spend together in post-canon makes it even better. "You can run away with me any time you want" also follows through on the "runaway" theme that they've both had on their separate playlists (Runaway by Yeah Yeah Yeahs on Caleb's first playlist and Runaway Pt. 1 (Love Has Limits) by Colony House on the Veth playlist).
3. Who Will I Hold, The Avett Brothers
I am screaming and crying and throwing up every time this song comes on. Listen to their one-on-one talk in episode 121 and then listen to this song. The lyrics are so remarkably accurate, it's a thing to behold. "I'm bracing for loneliness, I know it's coming/Now, who will I hold when you're gone?"
4. Hand Over Heart, Gin Wigmore
Melancholy and loving and again incredibly accurate lyrics from "and promise me, day and night/you'll always be my best friend" to "you got the magic to light up the stars/it's like the world is spinning just for you."
5. Not Alone, Shawn James
Very tender song that resonates a lot with wb, and also so very reminiscent of what Veth told Caleb in the finale with the line "Listen close and hear/I want you to let go of your fear/You can find love/Let go of your strife and get what you want out of your life." Like, I think there's a gifset out there somewhere where she basically just says this to Caleb.
6. I Will Follow Him, Peggy March
Okay so this one IS from the first Nott playlist, but I don't see it talked about very much and tbh if you're listening to it from the pov of having seen the end of the campaign, this one just hits different. Shoutout to the "he'll always be my true love" lyric. Like WHAT. The way that song was on an official CR playlist and no one ever talks about it, I'm--
7. Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise, The Avett Brothers
A third Avett Brothers song, you say?? Why yes, indeed. Their songs just really hit for this ship with me. I consider this song to mostly be a Veth song, revolving a lot around Veth's self-doubt issues, but if we're following Rosie's Lyrical Thematic Universe (RLTU), this lyric, "There was a dream and one day I could see it/Like a bird in a cage I broke in and demanded that somebody free it" stands out a lot. Like the song progression of Heart in a Cage -> I And Love And You -> Head Full Of Doubt/Road Full Of Promise is what I'm getting at here. "Oh, the heart beats in its cage" to "The dream's the catch/The world's the cage" to "Like a bird in a cage I broke in a demanded that somebody free it." The caged bird thing is HUGE thematically with me and which I think is really funny because it's literally just ME out here with these hyper specific themes and motifs going on. But I love it, I think it works great for them
8. If U Stayed, ZZ Ward
You come to this song for pure angst and pure angsty only. If you want to feel angsty about the fact that they're non-canon, this is the song for you.
9. December Song, Birdtalker (of Blue Healer fame) and Joy Williams (of Trouble With Wanting fame)

I've been wanting to write a post-canon holiday themed piece based around this song for AGES. the details aren't perfectly accurate, but the vibes are very much there.

No song list/playlist of mine is ever complete without at least ONE Nico Vega song. The themes of, well, "I will drop anything for you" ring very true, but my favorite line is the bridge: "Oh my love, you know you are a teacher/But you don't know I can be a teacher, too." I appreciate it on one level as inherently suggestive, but extremely literal in the case of late widobrave with Veth opening up her camp to teach adventurers, especially since she had said she wasn't a good teacher sometime in the early campaign.

Well.
I normally listen to the AC soundtrack when I write AC fics with the exception of smut (that's purely jazz versions of Xenoblade songs and I don't know why).

Let's start with the actual reason for the title of the fic
ZERO ECLIPSE - Hiroyuki Sawano
Yeah, that's right. Zero Eclipse's title was based on an Attack on Titan song from the very beginning. I'm not gonna talk about AOT though because, well, I have a complicated history with that manga/anime. But I am in love with Hiroyuki Sawano's music and, while the primary plotline of the fic was created before I realized how well Zero Eclipse worked, there are other parts of the fic that were inspired by the song itself.
Anyway, the song encapsulates Altaïr's feelings for Desmond (both Bleed Altaïr and Original Altaïr) and I have to give special mentions to the following lyrics

There's a Version 1 but I think Version 2 works better as both the theme of the 'AQ'AQ program and Original Altaïr. Both versions deal with pain and loss with a hint of hope towards the end (like the start of hope at around 2:20 to 2:54 but ending in an almost question-like tone which signifies the uncertain future) which I think encapsulates what the 'AQ'AQ program truly represented and how the original timeline and the original Altaïr had been. For an extra punch, this works well as a bgm for the final scene in the Grand Temple while the questioning tone at around the 2:55 mark works well with the error message of Chapter 41.

YOO can you talk about jaylen hotdogfingers settles the score with ll!bdubs
YEAH so this is one of the ones that I wanted to include but it could fit a lot of different players. I went with last life bdubs because that song has two different themes going on: betrayal/switching sides and deep hatred and bloodlust. During the second half of last life, bdubs had a lot of that being flung around him between his switching between red and yellow lives, his being the boogeyman and having to kill his teammate, and then his final betrayal final killing Lizzie in order to earn a life from Etho (which he died too quickly to receive). There was a lot of rage flung at him (from Tango and from the other reds whom he betrayed for his old teammate) but unfortunately not a lot from him despite his being red and/or boogeyman. Not all of the song fits (I would assign a character who survived longer to get the ‘remember all the dead and gone’ bit) but his character is one of the ones I most associate with it.
Specifically, in my mind this song is about last life bdubs’s final kill and final betrayal, channeling his red-life rage into taking Lizzie out of the series in exchange for a chance at redemption. Of course, the tragedy of this is that he never receives that last chance (I was going to say second chance but he got way more than two lol)
In terms of the lyrics themselves, there are a few that I think are definitely him: ‘Reality is changing/I am being torn apart/I’m stolen from my team/but you can never steal my heart’ because for much of last life bdubs was struggling to keep his place in BEST, but that was clearly where his loyalties were to the very end despite his getting killed or being boogeyman repeatedly keeping him and the rest of BEST apart. ‘I’m not gonna lose again/I won’t be your tool again’ again, a reference to the cycle of him coming back into BEST, dying, and being beholden to red names until he gets another life to bring him back to yellow. Maybe this is him accepting that this is the last time this will ever happen. ‘This is my redemption arc/I will be redeemed’ well. You know. If he were to have secured that kill and escaped with his life, he would have been brought back into BEST with a life from Etho, as promised. Thus he would be ‘redeemed’ and released from red bloodlust (for a while at least. And then, as he had wanted the whole time, he might have spent his red life alongside Etho. Who knows.)
I thought of a few alternative options for this song, most likely a limited life Martyn because of his famous betrayal of Scott at the end and one of the most clear-cut cases of red-life bloodlust in the series so far. However, I already have an incredible song for him in INCINERATE so I thought I shouldn’t step on the same ground twice so to speak. :)

Module 8 Assignment: Your Musical Theme
For this assignment, I put together a Rap/Hip-hop playlist focused on the theme of growing up, learning from bad decisions, and the consequences of getting involved in dangerous, gang-related activities just to fit in. The playlist explores the journey of a young person who chooses a path filled with challenges, driven by pride and peer pressure, only to realize the gravity of their mistakes and what truly matters in life.
The playlist starts with "03 Adolescence," a rap song that tells a story through rhythm rather than melody. The slow tempo and impactful lyrics like "You won't my mans, I would think that you're clown right now listen" convey the disappointment felt for someone who had the potential for greatness but opted for flashy and risky choices.
Next comes "A Tale of 2 Citiez - J. Cole," which contrasts the first song in terms of tempo and rhythm. This track carries a sense of urgency and danger through lines like "Anybody is a killer, all you gotta do is push 'em to the limps, Forget being timid in the Civic, Engaging with the pushers and the pimps." It portrays the story of a young individual whose promising future gets derailed by the pride of their surroundings.
The third song in the playlist is "Kendrick Lamar - The Art Of Peer Pressure." Similar in style and rhythm to the first track, this song conveys regret and disappointment at a faster pace. This contemporary-style track maintains a faster rhythm and tempo, evoking emotions of hope and introspection with lines like "Pride makes a person act way harder than they really be" and "Make you have to use your last resort and pull a robbery."
The fifth song, "J-Cole - Apparently," symbolizes a change and reflection on past wrongdoings. It carries more melody and rhythm, exuding a sentiment of hope, love, and transformation. The lyrics express this newfound change, for example, "I keep my head high, I got my wings to carry me, I don't know freedom, I want my dreams to rescue me, I keep my faith strong, I ask the Lord to follow me, I've been unfaithful."
Lastly, the sixth and final song of the playlist is "Love Yourz Lyrics - J Cole." This track represents a complete transformation in the individual featured throughout the playlist. It emphasizes self-love and the realization that the journey to success may not be linear, but it's crucial to keep pushing forward and learning from mistakes. The song is more melodious and rhythmic, with a focus on the beat and backing instruments. Another one of my favorite Prince songs. Particularly, one of my favorite sex songs by him (and in general). This song is a perfect demonstration of his genius when it comes to sexual metaphors and innuendo. I'm confident this man would have been able to liken sex to renovating a house and still make it erotic somehow had he still been alive today, and that's just one of the many things I love and appreciate about his artistry.
As soon as the song opens, before his vocals are even introduced, the backing track alone feels as though all inhibitions are slowly fading, as though the walls are slowly retracting between these two and we are entering a state of vulnerability.
"May I have this dance?"
This lyric establishes an isolation from the world around them. Quite literally, it paints a picture of a dance floor reserved for two. He only sees her and wants her to only see him in this moment.
"Darling, it appears to me That you could use a date tonight A body that'll do you right Tell me: am I qualified? Baby, I know it's hard to believe But this body here is free tonight Your very own first-class flight My plane's parked right outside, baby Don't you want to go for a ride?"
Maybe she's had some bad experiences, maybe she's picky about her partners, or maybe he simply feels she deserves better because he's so captivated by her. Either way, here he is promising her a night of passion with no strings attached, if she'll have him. Sincerely, her pleasure is his only priority and he doesn't want her to miss out on a positively beautiful experience that literally stands before her.
"I'm an international lover, yeah that's right Let me take you around the world I'll buy you diamonds and pearls Only if you're good girl"
The chorus promises her everything. This could be taken literally, but if we were to take this as another sexual expression, he's saying he'll do whatever she wants, whatever it takes, to please her sexually and, as illustrated in the third verse, is fully capable of doing so.

I highlighted this verse because I felt it encapsulated a vital theme in this song perfectly. Here, he expands on the first verse. Whatever the reason may be, she hasn't been satisfied in a long time and deep inside, she's desperate to be filled (emotionally or literally). He can see this in her eyes and probably from experience too. Gently, yet desperately himself, he pleads that he won't hurt her, he won't disappoint, he'd make it so good for her if she'd just accept his offer.
"Good evening. This is your pilot Prince speaking You are flying aboard the Seduction 747 And this plane is fully equipped with anything Your body desires If for any reason there is a loss in cabin pressure I will automatically drop down to apply more To activate the flow of excitement Extinguish all clothing materials and pull my body close to yours Place my lips over your mouth, and kiss, kiss, normally In the event there is overexcitement Your seat cushion may be used as a flotation device We ask that you please observe the "No Letting Go" sign I anticipate a few turbulence along the way We are now making our final approach to Satisfaction Please bring your lips, your arms, your hips Into the upped and locked position for landing Can you feel it? My absolute favorite verse in this song and sexual Prince at his best, metaphorically speaking. This entire verse is the act of sex itself. I revel in his "announcement" every time I listen to this song, with all of its overt sexual innuendo, and find it quite clever that, true to his title as our pilot, he is guiding us through this sexual fantasy he's sending the listener off with as well. I'd especially like to direct your attention to the not-so-subtle allusion to them chasing their orgasm together in the last section. A powerful climax hits with that scream he belts out and the overflow of sexual pleasure follows soon after in the form of his vibrato. Brilliant.

The outro depicts their afterglow literally and instrumentally, with both his vocals and the backing track coming down from their high and fading into a satisfying silence.
I really love this song because, while Prince has taken many different approaches to the topic of sex in his songs, I really appreciate how this song embodies sex itself. It's an entire sexual encounter that could be based in love or a simple one-night stand, but leaves everyone satisfied nonetheless either way.
As I briefly touched on with the intro, the composition really conveys a feeling of vulnerability, desperation, and desire. The desperation to sexually please is a familiar sound in Prince's songs and can be heard in songs like "Do Me Baby" from his Controversy album. It's quiet, yet passionate. His voice is the only thing filling that "silence" that hangs between the two as their sexual tension unfolds instrumentally.
His vocal prowess here is particularly exceptional, with this song being a popular example of his vocal range (especially for the time of its release) in his transitions from bass, to falsetto, and screaming throughout the song. His moaning, whining, panting, and fluctuations between seductive and pleading inflections convey his intense feelings to perfection, as though his sexual arousal seeping through every word is almost involuntary.
In addition to all there is to appreciate about the song itself, his live performances of this song are by far some of my favorites. His ad-libbed lines following the third verse like "Do you wanna kiss me, baby? Then stick your tongue out" or "I know where your G-spot is. You want me to show you?" along with his erotic shadow performance at the end only enhance the sexual experience that the song already offers.
There is much to appreciate about International Lover. From it's composition, instrumentals, vocals, and performance, it is truly a masterpiece among many in Prince's catalogue. The arousal and passion weaved into every facet of the song is infectious and easily invokes those feelings in its listener. The mood it carries of a sexual fantasy is also quite reminiscent of his later work, Space, for me. The 1999 era was definitely Prince in one of his top forms in my opinion, with the album featuring fantastic and unconventional numbers just like this one where the lyrics especially flourished. Many of my favorites belong to this album, but this song is definitely an all-time favorite.

LYRIC ANALYSIS

One, two, three One, two- Yesterday, it finally came, a sunny afternoon I was on my way to buy some flowers for you Thought that we could hide away in a corner of the heath There's never been someone who's so perfect for me
“it finally came, a sunny afternoon”: they’re in the UK besties
“i was on my way”: set out to do something sweet for partner, to enjoy together
“hide away”: escape reality together for a while
“the heath”: piece of land, meadow
find a spot of peace and calm in nature. how bucolic of him
But I got over it and I said "Give me something old and red" I pay for it more than I did back then
“but i got over it”: over what? the thoughts he was having about his lover? over the idea of going to hide away? this dreamlike, film version of love?
gets a bottle of red wine instead of flowers - can’t resist alcohol? sets his thoughts to woo his lover aside - bc it’s not realistic? bc he prefers a drink, to start his nostalgic meanderings? bc he prefers getting something they can enjoy together, as a mature couple?
“i pay for it...”: the consequences of drinking red wine are greater than when he was younger. aka hangovers are a bitch when you’re not a teenager anymore

def sounds like someone who’s had a glass or two
“no getting through without you”: a bottle, or life, or anything really
“just me and you”: would almost make you believe “you” is there, drinking with him. 
theme: us against the world // “in this world, it’s just us” - as it was
or “you” as in the bottle of red. a hint of alcoholism there (+ him getting a bottle instead of flowers: love for the drink is overpowering everything else?)
Sitting in the garden, I'm a couple glasses in I was tryna count up all the places we've been You're always there, so don't overthink I'm so over whites and pinks I pay for it more than I did back then
seems like he’s drinking alone -> previous “just me and you” implies more, then, that he’s talking in general terms, not specifically the bottle
“tryna count up”: useless tipsy activity, still thinking about his lover tho
“all the places we’ve been”: travelling together
“you’re always there”: lover is always there, wherever he goes (whether literally or metaphorically), or the wine is always there 
-> “so don’t overthink”: settle his thoughts/worries about love and life with a bottle of rouge
can also be heard as more innocent: i shouldn’t overthink where we’ve been as a couple bc he’s always there, as he’s proven time and again
“i’m so over whites and pinks”: white and rosé wine. sounds like a drunkard assuring the drink he’s holding that the other drinks are nothing to him -> more narrative into the red wine is the love of my life side of things
“whites and pinks”: i just need to get this thought out of my head so i’ll put it here: this part reminds me of billy joel’s scenes from an italian restaurant “bottle of white, bottle of red, perhaps a bottle of rosé instead” and that reminded me of the idea i had of music for a sushi restaurant before i heard the song, yk, that it was gonna be that kind of vibe. so. what’s my point? idk. that everything reminds me of billy joel? maybe yeah

it’s also the year E.T. came out (this is a joke but it’s still fun to entertain). 82 is also 28 backwards. 
we’re circling back now: there’s no getting through the grape juice blues without you - i need you to get through it all. the wine is making me a lil blue but i do remember that you’re always there. won’t you come sit in the garden with me and share this bottle? where are you, baby? *whine* (pun intended yes you can come slap me)
“grape juice blues”: being wine drunk is often a more melancholy, tired kind of drunk + hangover afterwards

SYNTHESIS
Alright, so. Before I go any further, I’m just going to state that I do not think Harry has an alcohol problem. He’s said on multiple occasions that he doesn’t drink while working, and his overall stance on it makes it pretty clear that he has it under control. This, to me, is another episode of your love is so addictive I can only compare it to substance abuse.

That said, this also isn’t the first time alcohol has been mentioned in Harry’s oeuvre. (I included the ones where he’s drinking, otherwise you can also look at Carolina or Kiwi.)

Yes, he likes a drink. At times, he also drinks to cope with difficult situations. Heartbreak, identity crises, loneliness, or as a distraction. It lets that tied tongue of his loose. He also drinks to just have a good time. Partying, letting go. This, however, is one of those songs, to me, that’s about a very mundane slice of life. He got a bottle of red and decided to drink it in the garden, basking in the sun, thinking about the love of his life. The one who’s always there, the one he can’t get through life without. The allusion to alcoholism, though, to him being dependent on wine to get through life, is a smokescreen for his true addiction: his lover. The one he’s needy as fuck for, the one he craves attention from at all times, the actual source of life he’s dependent on. I feel like this scene is one where the lover isn’t home, so he’s left to his own devices, and it’s simply a happier, harmless version of “Harry, you’re no good alone.” He’s drinking a couple of glasses of that bottle, which is encouraging him to think about their relationship and where they’ve been in their lives, and he’s having a good time. “So don’t overthink,” he’s telling himself - stop fretting, it’s all good. He’ll have a hangover, but that’s part of it. Good thing he has that love thing going on to soften the blow. (Which, again, can be seen as a metaphor for when things get rocky in a steady relationship like theirs, it blows over eventually. Things get healthy again. Just gotta be patient and power through that nasty headache.)
I also love that the song contains playful elements of the wine in question, and that it flirts sonically as well as lyrically with how someone might sound after a few glasses of that nice 1982. He’s a messy drunk, who’s not 18 anymore, so his grape juice blues hit a little harder, and his hangovers are a little worse than they used to be. 
The bottom line is: let’s share this bottle like we share this life. Because if I do it alone, I’m suffering.
