I like to think that Belos is stuck in the Inbetween Space (where Luz met Papa Titan, and went in Yesterday’s Lie), stuck with the consequences of what he has done. It’s like the thinking of it’s too kind to let someone die and crueler to let them live. Imagine him seeing the Castle destroyed and replaced by a University of Wild Magic. Seeing his Golden Guard unlearn everything that he was forced to learn by Belos. Everything that has been undone from his regime, to let the Isles be as they were.
oh my god a neat little detail i noticed while rewatching toh were these two frames in yesterday’s lie when vee picks up the newspaper and turns it around:
at first we see the article of who we NOW know is caleb and (potentially) his future clawthorne spouse, and then a page about Eda, their descendant… this show man
After watching Thanks to Them it really puts in perspective of Camilla’s tears and the hasty promise she forced Luz to keep as she disappeared again. The Conformity Camp was never her idea in the first place.
She thought she was doing the right thing and helped Luz make friends and fit in better. She held on to the things that “Luz” threw out because she still loved the quirky things about her that the camp “stripped her away” of. In one day her whole entire worldview changed.
The well-behaved and conventional daughter that’s been living with her turned out to be a shape-shifting otherworldly being and her actual daughter is trapped in another dimension.
Camilla might have been kicking herself for caving into societal pressure and unintentionally lead her only child into a terrifying world. She never meant for Luz to feel like she had to run away for the summer and keep secrets about her true whereabouts.
Who knows how Camilla kept herself from falling apart counting down the days until Luz finally found a way to get back to earth and they’d be reunited. Camilla’s love for her daughter is tried and true and there’s no doubt why Luz would want to return to her even after her fantasy dreams came true.
That would be awful. And, I headcanon that in their meeting, Caleb echoed what Luz said in Yesterday’s Lie.
“Staying here was the best choice I ever made.”
It would be interesting to see Philip echo Camila’s sentiment, talking about how the brother who raised him would have never left him after what happened to their parents, that Caleb was all he had, and he must have done something to push him away like that.
Once again, I want to tie back to themes that weren’t quite resolved due to the cutting of the show.
Currently rewatching The Owl House and I’m on Yesterday’s Lie and here are things that I realized the second time watching this especially after the season 2 finale:
1- Phillip and Caleb are a part of the witch hunting org that the museum curator is in as shown by their statues and their story in the curator’s book about the two brothers who went to the demon realm in the 1600 and never returned.
2- This isn’t a confirmation really but an interesting find I didn’t notice in the first watch:
Looks like now we know Belos also believed in a flat earth! (Or I wouldn’t be shocked if he were a part of the flat earth society lol! 😂)
I’m personally paying far more attention during my second watch to catch anything I didn’t the first time!
I dunno if I'm alone on this, but as fantastic of an episode as "Yesterday's Lie" was, this scene I felt could've done with a slight retooling. Instead of Luz carelessly admitting that she chose to stay on the Boiling Isles, I feel the exchange should've gone like this.
LUZ: Believe me, Mama! Being on the Boiling Isles was the best experience ever for me!
CAMILLA: But Luz. Don't you have a way to get back to the real world?
And just like that, Luz's heart sank.
LUZ: (starting to tear up) I had a chance to come home. (sniff) But my friends in the demon rhealm were in danger and (struggles to keep it together) I sacrificed my chance to come home so I could save them from harm. (sniff)
CAMILLA: (saddened but understanding) It's okay, mija. You did what you thought was right.
LUZ: (feels herself about to be pulled back to the demon world) I'm sorry Mama! I'm sorry I lied!
CAMILLA: (holding onto her crying) Its okay, baby! I know you'll find a way to get back home! And when you do, I promise I'll do whatever I can to make things right!
Before Luz can ask what Camilla meant, she was whisked away back to the demon world, while Camilla was left to cry in the rain, with Vee comforting her.
Again I dunno if I'm alone on this. Does anyone else think the way the actual episode ended was a case of poor communication that could've been written better, or am I missing the point? Let me know.
Right before Luz went and got her mom to help Vee, she closed her eyes and took this tiny breath. I think she was trying to steel herself and get ready to explain everything that’s happened since she arrived in the Isles, and I think she wanted to, but didn’t want it to happen like this.
“Mom?”
In the moment before Luz catches sight of Vee, she’s actually in tears, so desperately needing to see her mom. She almost looks like she’s about to burst into tears.
“MOM!”
This isn’t really a small thing but I wanted to put this here anyways. Luz is reaching out for her mom who she’s missed for months, desperately crying out for her as tears fly off her face. Something about her terrified cry just got to me when I watched this.
Luz’s grimace as she realizes she can’t touch her mom, not to comfort her mom or herself. She even stutters on her next line (“I-I need a little more time.”).
“No, not yet. NOT YET! MOM!”
Luz’s terrified face just hurt my heart watching this episode. She realizes she’s about to be forcibly separated from her mom before she can fully explain what’s going on, and she can’t spend more time with her. She’s missed her mom for ages and didn’t get enough time to just talk with her.
I think the Vee Slander is uncalled for. So let’s do let’s think about her character and her actions in Yesterday’s Lie.
A main argument for why someone hates Vee is because she called Luz selfish and said she resented her. But really think about it from Vee’s POV. She would see Luz as kinda selfish. From Vees POV Luz ran away from a loving caring mother to do what? Live out a mediocre fantasy world? And Vee never had anyone like Camila. Vee is jealous of Luz and is confused that Luz wanted to leave that.
