Final artpiece by Acotama for their youkai project, based here on Utagawa Kuniyoshi's The Origin Story of the Cat Stone at Okabe. You can find here the presentation of this piece and here the WIP of the big nekomata.
I already share two of those doll monsters (depressed pumpkin ghost / fox-deer-faced discarded hakama), but Acotama made 140 of those creatures, and some will be sold this Winter, so be sure to follow their page if you are interested :D

Tokyo Night Parade - Picture Book
Tokyo Night Parade by J.P. Takahashi, Minako Tomigahara (Illustrations) Published 2023 by Harper Collins
Tumblr media
Written by J.P. Takahashi and Illustrated by Minako Tomigahara, 2023’s Tokyo Night Parade is about the “hyakkiyagyō, or the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons … said to walk the streets of Japan on evenings when the human world and the yōkai world overlap” (Takahashi, 2023). Eka is our main character- and a stand-in or representative of the author- and we follow her as she returns to Japan from New York for her favorite time of the year, the Night Parade. We watch as she wears her kitsune onesie and joins her friend Kappa as the festivities begin and she joins the demons for their parade. They chat about how life has changed for Eka and how she struggles to have people understand her, the demons relating. However, they also celebrate their togetherness and their parade with singing and dancing and with the hope of coming together again.
In Vardell’s 2019 text- Children’s Literature in Action: A Librarian’s Guide (3rd ed.)- we are given evaluation criteria regarding children’s picture books such as characters, plot, setting, theme, style, illustrations, and cultural markers- let’s take a look at a couple (2019). In this beautifully hued, illustrated, and written tale, we can evaluate the criteria of Cultural Markers. Takahashi and Tomigahara highlight the Japanese fables of yōkai through their joining in the Japanese tradition of the night parade- we highlight this culture through these elements written and illustrated. Speaking of Illustration, Illustrator Minako Tomigahara does a stunning job showing off her technical skill through design and hue, enveloping the reader in expressive colors and characters as the story progresses. Tomigahara also pays close mind and attention to the diversity of Japanese yōkai present between these pages, showing off their diversity in appearance and range of character- from sinister to playful.
In discussing its place in a library setting and the role it can play, this could be an excellent piece in discussing Japanese culture, tradition, and the fables of yōkai. I could see this picture book taking a great place in a display regarding Japanese culture and experience and a place in discussion regarding fables/ demons/ creatures of different cultures. In my mind, with the creative interest I have seen in children at my workplaces,  I can see children doing drawings and colorings of creatures like yōkai- from tradition or their own minds- and making a show of displaying them and discussing them- what they stand for or do.

@cnlyluck - yokai s.c.
Tumblr media
yokai generated: kuchisake-onna
Sometimes, the emotion behind a death, or within the body of someone who passed, exist so strongly, that the world outside is rendered moot. The line between the living mortal realm and the realm of the undead thins. It especially is at its thinnest at the witching hour… The time when the sun and moon seem to share the same sky, stars within a sunset orange glow.
The realm has opened. The rift between time, space, light and darkness… Has split enough to allow a single spirit through. A malicious, yearning and emotional spirit.
The dark, dingy streets of Canto Bight were no stranger to beautiful women. They were as common to the habitat as flies to garbage, or frogs to ponds. With the allure of money, booze and lust, it wasn’t hard for women of all sorts to make their way in.
However… Not all of these women were human. No matter how human they appeared, no matter how beautiful they seemed.
For decades (but still fairly recent in era), a strange woman had wandered the city streets here. Despite being hunted by the proper paranormal slayers, she escaped each time.
Somehow, the streets seemed entirely too quiet. It was late at night, and many people had found their way to their lodgings or remained in bars, clinging to the last drops of alcoholic bliss until they had to trudge to their dead-end jobs in a few hours.
It was here, on this dark, dingy street, that a woman wandered, her dark hair smooth as it flowed down her back, her white blouse accenting the dark sheen as if drawing one’s eye to it. To her body- blouse ample in showing the right amount of skin, a creamy pale neck…
It wasn’t strange for people to wear masks. It wasn’t all that unusual for a lady out and about to be wearing one, especially in this part of town.
That woman, beautiful and strange in how her eyes gleamed, approached the young gentleman with such a grace to her footsteps, it wasn’t like she belonged in Canto Blight, or the earthly planet realms, at all.
“Do you think I’m pretty?” She asked breathily, fluttering her heavy lashes up at Lucky.

Yokai are creatures of the boundaries. They are the in-between, existing in twilight and at the turn of the seasons. Yokai are the shadowy corners of your room. They lie beneath the surface of dark water.
They walk behind you at night. Yokai are also puns and clever word play. They are witty political commentaries. They are crude jokes.
Yokai are imaginative designs by artists trying to sell you a glimpse of the fantastic. They are characters invented by writers and play-wrights. Yokai are stories told around campfires. They are product mascots. They are art. They are commerce. Yokai are an expression of human imagination and creativity, and equally limitless.

Separated for years from society, there were often times that Robin felt the same-- that she believed more in the autonomy of beasts, understood their bodies better than her own. Some days, she wanted to shift into her lupine form and never leave it.
There was still the milk of human connection to be found. Even if they came in the form of a strange, bespectacled man who reminded her very much of her friend back home.
All this one was missing was the German accent.
As if sensing what Robin was imagining, the Bakeneko meowed long and low, peering up at Egon with demand flashing like bolts. He wanted more affection, please! Pat my bum like the good doctor!
"I must admit, I only know so much about them," Robin mused, staring down at the two making friendly contact on the floor. "My friend Henrik says they're monstrous, but largely just abandoned souls."
A pause, as she stuffed her hands into her jacket. "What do you think?"

THE OUTERMOST EDGES OF HIS LIPS WERE BARELY CURLED INTO A SMILE. Gentle fingers stroked through fur, both man and Bakeneko having clearly reacted positively to the attention. Of course, he understood well enough that creatures, be they dogs, cats, birds, or Yokai, were their own beings, and deserved their autonomy. Thus, he never sought to impose upon them too much, as was also the case with his fellow humans. If they approached him, then fine, but he never took offence if they didn't.

❝ Sometimes. I never force it. ❞
REMARKED SOFTLY, AS HE OFFERED THE FOCUS OF HIS AFFECTION A GENTLE SCRATCH BEHIND THE EARS. He eventually found himself slowly descending to his knees.
❝ I firmly believe that animals can sense far more about humans than we ourselves can. Bakeneko aren't much different in that regard. ❞

Another nothing of a Bleach tidbit but thumbing through old bleach and i always forget about about these random little dudes helping Niko carry the stretcher with Rukia/Urahara's gigai??? They never show up again, and this whole scene actually doesn't exist in the anime.

It's funny, there's a pretty robust history of ukyio-e paintings centering on anthropomorphized animals, and frogs in particular are a common subject. But oddly the cricket(?) and bugs in general don't really seem to get that same treatment nearly as often, which seems strange given Japan's love of bugs. But it seems odd to put the two together.
Are they yokai? In the context of the 12th division they do give off Hyakki Yagyo vibes, and certainly the wide variety of creatures in the night parade tend to include some animaloids, although usually those are more like foxes and tanuki and bakeneko. Were they experimented on or otherwise modified like so many spotlight members of 12th divison? Or are they animal people like Komamura?

It’s a Hyakki Yagyō! (Night parade of 100 demons) (a orderly procession/riot of oni and yokai through the streets of Japan late at night)
YOOOOO no way :0
Ofc the Researcher is the (accidental) leader of this parade. Passerbyers who walk by the Researcher, are stunned at the fact that this human woman was leading such a huge group of monsters behind her. Yeah, no one is messing with the Researcher anytime soon, as she’s got all these women acting as her bodyguards 😭😭
The poor townsfolk of nearby villages that have to witness this…they think a Hyakki Yagyō is happening and lock their doors in fear, but really it’s just the Researcher and her many monster girlfriends stalking her…
