What do you think Mac and Charlie’s friendship was like before they met Dennis?

oh anon i’m SO GLAD you asked

the core of their relationship to me when they were young is that they’re all each other had. they only had each other for everything - for entertainment, for support, for some kind of source of love. and because they only had each other, they did everything together.

i’m talking skipped school together, stole junk food from the convenience store together, smoked their first cigarettes together, drank their first beer together. whatever charlie was game for mac was game for and vice versa. attached at the hip (a tiny lil hc i have in my brain is that early on in their education their mothers were actually called into parent teacher conferences together to discuss just how close the boys were).

they could talk about anything together, no matter how big or small, and there was an understood agreement that there’d be no judgement. that’s what made them work, you know? they were judged by everyone else their whole lives, they don’t need to judge each other. and to not have any other support system from the people that were supposed to provide it, naturally they turned to each other, like everything else they did.

they were so close, actually, that they could practically read each others minds. it freaked everyone else out but charlie always called it a super power. mac could tell by a twitch in charlie’s face if he was amused or pissed off or sad, and charlie could read mac by watching his hands - cracking his knuckles a ton meant anxious, clenching his fists meant pissed, playing with his ring meant content. and that’s not to say that being able to do all this stopped when dennis showed up, it’s just that they couldn’t acknowledge it the same anymore. silent reads and silent worries instead of outright displays of concern.

they always knew they were closer than most “best friends” were, but that’s the point of it - they weren’t best friends. they were brothers.

charmac are going to age up soon in my sims game and i was initially going to deage them with cheats like poppins and jack bauer (who shall live forever) but now that im thinking about it it would be very funny to have withered grandpa mac with dennis who is stuck forever young as a vampire. hes going to outlive them all without intervention. hes going to be alone with his artificially kept alive cat and dog and maybe horse (i will decide that later) in an abandoned cabin alone in the werewolf town where the nightly howls sometimes remind him of what he has lost. and then im probably just going to play him until he dies somehow

okay so. charlie’s sisters called him dirtgrub? but he says they moved to i think jersey when they were young? assuming they’re in their thirties, and that he was called that when he was a teen, why do they know that was not only his nickname, but his nickname from the bullies at school???? AND ALSO. this parts for the charmac nation- CHARLIES SISTERS CALLING THE BOTH OF THEM THE F SLUR???????? because as kids they hung around so much and so intimately that his sisters only memories of them seem gay and and :( babie charmac im so ill

Thinking about Dirtgrub and Ronnie the rat and how they are, at their core, still kids.

They plan ridiculous adventures, they come up with childish business ideas to get rich quick, they play with costumes and swords, they want their mums to be best friends.

They are friendship bracelets and playing make believe and smoking weed behind the school and skipping class and sleepovers and they don’t need to miss their childhoods because they’re right there.

Charlie still thinks Mac is tough, even though it’s been repeatedly shown to be false bravado. Because he still knows Mac as the town weed dealer with slicked back hair and abusive parents, who always stood up for him.

And Mac still tries to protect Charlie, e.g in the high-school reunion episode. Even though he gets thrown to the wolves again and again, he still looks out for Charlie, because to him, that’s still the little boy who is strongly adverse to touch and is most definitely getting molested by his uncle.

So Mac can fall in love with Dennis, Charlie can move in with Frank, Mac can come out, Charlie can sleep with Dee and It will never matter. They’re still thirteen years old, passing a joint back and forth.

the ones that i currently have notes on are:

mac would (try to) protect charlie from bullies by fighting them. but we know mac doesn’t know to use whatever strength he has, so he would end up being beat up. but no one hurts charlie’s best friend so charlie himself would go crazy at them for hurting mac and bite at and fight them and he definitely wins that fight

when mac’s dad went to jail, to cheer him up, they initially went to go throw rocks at cats. but mac realised that probably hurt the cats (and he didn’t want anyone else getting hurt) so they ended up just playing with them instead. they both chose their favourite and brought it back to mac’s place. charlie named his cat ronnie after his favourite person & mac named his charles after his favourite person. they weren’t allowed to keep the cats inside tho : (

edit: oh and when they brought the cats inside they bought cat food and stuff for them & that's when charlie first started eating cat food!

when mac was at charlie’s house, he realised the only food they had in was cheese and soup. so, 10 year old them went shopping together alone, due to mac insisting. using money mac stole from his house to pay for food for charlie’s house

whenever u*cle j*ck was over, mac would always allow charlie to sleep over at his. it wasn’t even a question. mac wouldn’t let charlie in his own house when he knew his uncle was there too

okay but mac & charlie as young kids growing up in shitty, unsafe situations and spending every hour possible biking around philly until way past the regular curfew of the street lamps to try and feel as normal as possible. standing on street corners in the winter bundled in layers of old clothes to smoke ms macs cigarettes and look through baseball cards, noses all red and runny. shwoing up at eachothers houses late at night when things got too much at home and the other sneaking them in so they could sleep and heading out to the train yard early in the morning, ditching school to hang out and forget everything. ms kelly making mac feel safe and wanted and loved whenever he visits!!! and mac letting charlie spend the night after finding out about uncle jack and having to be talked down from beating the shit out of him while his blood boils . bestfriends who make shit more bearable for eachother !!!! blood brothers !!!!!!
