sometimes its actually alarming HOW uncritically the naruto fandom looks at the text like because something isnt "shown" in canon/on-screen (it usually is, but just implicitly) people think it means it couldnt have happened and therefore making sweeping statements about the character like "theyre just weak" or "they make no sense"
as usual im going to focus on naruto (😌) heres an example but it applies to many others (itachi, gaara, neji, hinata,...me)
here are some things we know about naruto:
he is inexplicably talented at taijutsu despite having no mentor
he created sexy jutsu for attention from older men (he craves a father figure)
he is rather repulsed by affection aside from certain people
he relies on shadow clones to outnumber his enemies and protect him from damage, as well as acting like diversions (he only later on seems to learn to use them practically as well, and he doesnt use them as an actual team iirc)
he represses his memories and life severely if they cause him distress or negative emotion, and when he doesnt do that it causes him to lose complete control of himself in anger
some of these things are basic signs of a child who has been abused in multiple ways (particularly verbally, physically, and sexually), but also just logically how is it possible that naruto became proficient at taijutsu when he didnt train with anyone and had no teacher to correct him? why would it be important to naruto to have, what are essentially, human shields? why does naruto freely tolerate physical abuse he receives while others openly complain about it? why would that lead to naruto eventually wanting to defend/protect everyone in tandom with ANOTHER orphan who feels the same? why would WE not be able to have a clear directly depicted answer to this as a reader?
idk to me personally there are a lot of things people say are "headcanons" are just things they logically put together based on subtext, and theres a reason why a vast majority of people who read the same text come to the same conclusion. it seems like this is a lot less common in manga form (i dont read manga so i wouldnt know, i understand different mediums have different communication norms but some things are just literary basics), so its the first time ive encountered this "why does everyone believe in [some idea not said in plain english]? it's never said anywhere!" logic...it doesnt need to be. there are certain clues and patterns youre supposed to be able to draw conclusions for based on common life experiences (archetypes/universal symbols).
Tumblr media
if you can do these above steps and come to a conclusion, and a plurality of people come to the same conclusion, it was probably intentional on the author's part. if the author explicitly states its not intentional, then sure, but that doesnt take away from how/why the story is impactful because the author may not even realize theyre doing it. an easy example i can think of is tsunade's fear of blood, where its meant to symbolize death, but in her case also ends up symbolizing love wrt her relationships with naruto and jiraiya. and thanks to blood gaining this symbolism through tsunade, when you see uchiha tears of blood, you instantly make those same connections. then you think back to gaara screaming about having never seen his blood (coming from his forehead where that tattoo of his is......), then the eventual resolution of that being an inversion of the symbolism the manga establishes when he battles his father during the war.
more than anything though i find it kind of concerning that adults sit around laughing at obviously what is meant to be traumatic. as if there arent people in your life who sit around with these same experiences and signs, with something they havent told you about because theyre afraid youll laugh at them.

Temari excels at tessenjutsu (metal fan techniques)
She hides it inside her obi (belt)
There's a time when she has to put away her usual big fan as a sign of trust during diplomatic visit
But when there's a sudden attack during the meeting (or betrayal)..
They didn't know that she's NEVER unarmed.
Do you think WHY she always wear an obi?? To keep her tessen.
I'm certain she wear it when she's asleep. She wear it at home.. anywhere.. anytime.. even her wedding dress has obi with it.
Of course kimono will use obi. What I meant.. since I don't know what she wore in her wedding, and if she wore the modern dress instead of traditional one, I BET THERE MUST BE AN OBI WITH IT BECAUSE THAT'S HOW TEMARI WORKS

Kankuro can play "The Seven Roles"
Suna scores 2/5 on population, isn't it? So I think they don't just rely at combat approach, they also rely at disguises for infiltration.
It just happened that Kank is good at this thing
So at first, Kank's puppet disguised as him, but what if the roles swapped? Kank disguised as a puppet instead?
And then he expands it to another different roles, depending on the country
He always use his facepaint during the mission as a shinobi, so nobody knows what his real face actually look like
People there just like: Oh, this guy is just.. a guy. I don't really care anyway.
The reason he's barely doing that is either because: "Puppet is love, puppet is life" or the preparation is such a hassle + it really takes time, he needs his siblings' help to make it faster
But when you ask if he can do that? Yes, yes he can :)

Gaara understanding crabs..
(especially coconut crab like in the way some people refers them as terrifying, monstrous, etc.)
Observing their stoic appearance and behavior, studying them, understanding them, liking them, hyperfixates on them.
Then when he got back from the mission and seeing his cacti collection again, he'll be m.. nostalgic like oh it's been so long, remember when my past self obsessed with them? *proceeds to hyperfixates on cacti again*
I personally like the idea of gaar trying to be friends with the crab. Maybe also with slime molds. Or with any "expressionless" living being.
LIKE PLANTS!! Right!
Oh.. so that's why. That's makes sense actually.
The reason he can get along with plants instead of other kind of animals might be because of Shukaku's chakra. Like the way his chakra scared akamaru the dog. Animals can runaway, but cacti can't. I don't understand how his cacti felt around gaar, but I'm sure they're still alive because gaar taking care of them.
And I still have no idea how the animals would act around him after shukaku's extraction. I want him to be friends with the crabs so much

has anyone ever even thought about the fact that Gaara becoming kazekage at 15 makes no sense??
and not because he's 'too young'
because he was twelve when his father, the 4th kazekage, died.
that means Suna went THREE YEARS with NO kazekage. it just makes no sense.
either they had a similar thing with Danzo, where they had a temporary kazekage, that just goes forever unmentioned and unrecorded, the council, or other higher members of the village ran it until Gaara was mature enough, or they simply went three years with no singular person enforcing things or working with the council, who aren't as much built of shinobi.
I think about this all the time. we KNOW Rasa died in part 1. he's been dead for three years until Gaara finally took over.
for why?

Short shower thought today:
Idol AU has a “Broadway” theme for a week and the contestants are paired up. Gaanaru get paired and everyone knows it’s going to be extra as fuck but have absolutely no idea what to expect because Gaara barely sticks to the theme and Naruto is always Too Excuted™️
Then it’s the night of and Naruto comes out in a full massive dress and a rock cover of Phantom of the Opera starts and everyone collectively realizes that they severely underestimated the amount of gay drama these two are willing to bring when the other is involved.

Headcanon: Chidori
Despite having a few variations of it, Sasuke doesn’t use the Chidori all that often.
He doesn’t like killing, after all. I mean, even in the anime, think about it. Orochimaru commented on the fact that he never killed.
Rather than killing Orochimaru, he sealed him in his Curse Seal.
He didn’t kill Deidara because he wanted information on where Itachi was.
And, despite his best effort, he didn’t kill Itachi, Itachi died from his sickness.
So he doesn’t have much use for an assassination type move. Even if he aimed away from the heart, leaving a hole big enough for your hand to plunge into someone is very likely to kill them fairly quickly. That might be why he created the variations of it, so he could continue using it to channel his lightning chakra.
But yeah, he's very unlikely to use Chidori itself. Like, if he had to use it to save someone's life, he would do it, but he would likely be at close range for that, so the Chidori would not be the best move.
If he wanted to get the jump on someone and wanted to kill them… then he’d probably use it, but like I said, he doesn’t like killing, so he's more likely to simply use the speed he would use for Chidori to blindside them, or concoct a plan. Or, if he is with other shinobi, co-ordinate with them to try and minimalize causalities on both sides.
Due to how unlikely it is that he uses the Chidori in general, he'd likely never follow in Kakashi's footsteps of creating a better one, like the Raikiri. There just wouldn’t be much point to do so, for him, unless he was going to change it to be an attack that is likely to incapacitate someone, but not kill them. But he also has other techniques for that, so there wouldn’t be much point.

An interesting thing about not watching Naruto until I was in my 20s is that I spent a lot of it thinking about how a younger me would watch it and feel about certain characters. It was almost identical to watching an anime again after many years and realizing my opinions were very warped or just needed a good bit a nuance my younger self was incapable of.

I really need to write a filler episode just to introduce all my Mist world building and the OC Clan I made. I really can't wait to show you guys the DILF I made to marry Mei as well as some actual reasoning for why she is always thinking about marriage when her entire village needs to be rebuilt. But I just think the fact Mist is on an island is so severely underutilized that would give rise to smaller things as well as big changes, like how important tide and moon would be. The fact their ANBU masks aren't animals and what that can mean. But I feel like no one would want to read it because it's so heavily based in my own thoughts. But it's not like Kishi is doing anything with them.

planter’s punch (Young, modern verse Gaara)
𝑪𝑶𝑪𝑲𝑻𝑨𝑰𝑳 𝑸𝑼𝑰𝒁.
[ planter's punch ]  how long does it take to befriend them?
Depends how hard you try. Gaara vibes best with extroverts who pluck him from his dark corner and forcefully worm their way into friendship. These types of aggressively positive people can break down his defenses fairly quickly, as long as they also give him a wide berth for his personal space and bouts of moodiness.
The average person will find it more difficult. On the best of days he is untalkative and prone to preferring his own company; at worst he is outright misanthropic. Yet catch him in the right mood, show your genuine interest rather than shrugging him off, and might take interest in you.
Gaara isn't psychopathic, after all - he is an intelligent and curious yet lonely child with unprocessed trauma and daddy issues. At his core he desires social connection like any other human being.

He's extremely sleepy today and so -- eternally grateful that his seal had been fixed in the past -- he was stretched out on his bed with a soft sigh. He was sure to be disturbed at some point, but he needed to rest.
