This one really sucks. There's no modern day comic art without Neal Adams. Everything you see now, in terms of physical detail in any character, is rooted in Neal's work. That especially goes for the realism. Upon his arrival at @dccomics in 1967 he worked on the character Deadman for the title Strange Comics. If I'm not mistaken it earned him the award for cover of the year. He then moved to the Green Lantern/Green Arrow title, in which he gave Green Arrow, in particular, a much needed revamping of his appearance, suddenly making him seem far more interesting than before. His legacy, however, is what he did with Batman. Before Dennis O'Neil was given the ok bring Batman back to his roots from a story aspect, Neal wanted to draw Batman. Editor Julius Schwartz denied him repeatedly. So he approached the editor of the Brave And The Bold title about drawing for them and he was granted permission. When that title outsold Batman and Detective Comics, Julius Schwartz finally approached Neal, asking him what he thinks he knows about what Batman looks like. Neal's response? "Everybody knows what Batman is supposed to look like except for DC Comics". He was right. With The Brave And The Bold title he made Batman look like a fucking BADASS for the first time since his 1939 debut. And following the end of the family TV show months earlier, Batman needed a SERIOUS do over. All that was needed now was the right writer. The team of Neal Adams and Dennis O'Neil is the most iconic team in Batman history because they set the tone for decades to come. He also was an advocate for creators rights. His biggest accomplishment? He was able to ensure that DC Comics gave Superman creators Jerry Seigel and Joel Shuster a pension as result of their work, as they were literally penniless. The creators of the first ever superhero should NEVER have been left in that state.
