a bunch of Future Redeemed thoughts before I call it a day. Currently on Chapter 3 where you have a quest to help make a certain Nopon’s workshop
my hand hurts i think i played it in an uncomfortable position
In no specific order:
these games are addictively fun because checking things off a list is fun. Rewarding you with % completion even when you discover a treasure chest makes things even more rewarding than usual
Matthew’s voice actor in Japanese (although I’m playing this in English) also voices Yuji Itadori from Jujutsu Kaisen and honestly Matthew is basically just Yuji. Casual, surprisingly empathetic bro who settles things with a good punch.
speaking of VAs, sad Al Weaver didn’t reprise Rex, and I’m not exactly sure why Skye Bennet didn’t come on for Glimmer, given it’s the same voice in Japanese there, but actually I think I like that. Just cause it’s their kid and looks like them doesn’t mean they need to be voiced by the same person. I love Dragon Ball Z (Japanese) but you don’t always have to do that
Holy shit the Xenoblade Chronicles (1) battle theme plays in the Gaur Plains area I was not expecting that. I think it took me a while because it also sounds like...Kingdom Hearts music. Did Yoko Shimomura do this track?
it’s like some of Future Redeemed here is a bit of an apology for having so much of the plot revolve around Rex’s children and their lineage that we’re going to do some more direct XB1 callbacks this time
the first big plain area definitely has elements of Gormott in the music though. Was Gormott never in Aionios before? That makes it three times they’ve remixed that track lol
I was weirded out when Rex started off all hostile to Glimmer, but they did explain it. Chad Rex isn’t just great because he big and buff, it’s cause he’s a giant himbo. It’s so fun to see him being written by someone who wrote him in XB2, some of his lines come so naturally out of his mouth
Also interesting how people who played game 1 and 2 they’ve basically confirmed Nicol and Glimmer are Shulk and Rex’s kids but it’s probably still vague enough that new players wouldn’t immediately figure it out
we now have a third time they have played The Weight of Life thankyou monolith
like I was a little disappointed the returning tracks from XB3 still have the flute in them because the flute isn’t a motif in this prequel, the off-seeing didn’t exist yet but oh well
instead of more flutes we get clapping. the claps are the new flutes. i wonder if that’s like, a symbolic choice, representing community or something
we had better get na’el playing piano on-screen at some point. maybe she sings the sad song in-character. maybe i’m going to cry a lot
btw I have a depressing theory about how Nicol and Glimmer get out of the 10-year cycle. my theory is Shulk and Rex give up their lives for their lifespans somehow. it’d explain where they went to. and why it probably can’t be repeated by anyone else. only people who originated from outside Aionios can do it maybe
good on Zeke and Pandoria for having a kid
Glimmer’s design is not too fanservicey, but it is very easy to do an upskirt shot if you move the camera. luckily she has shorts underneath her short skirt. she also has jiggle physics i think but again it’s very subtle. She *will* get a lot of doujin. But I like her. even if she feels maybe a bit too Mythra
i’m sure people will dislike glimmer for being the antagonistic one in the heroes but i say let her girlboss. she just wanted to die for a cause and is scared and confused.
oh yeah lore stuff, it’s confirmed Ghondor is N and M’s kid, which while adding to the “Noah is bad at naming” gag, also makes me ask what took Z so long to decide to revive him as Moebius. For the amusement? even then you’d think it’d hit harder if he had to either do it directly after his death when he knew people there or many centuries later when there were more of his descendants to kill rather than, like, 3. maybe he just wanted the sweet spot where ghondor was still alive but there were more of his kids to kill
that’s all i can think of for now

Demons Unleashed ~ Origins of the Ink Dmeon Gaiden Finale (1/10) ~
[Dream Gate - Nights' World]
[When the Night Falls - Tomoko Sasaki]
Maka Albarn : Huh? Where are we?
Inky Jr : Looks like we stumbled upon another access to the Dream World. I don't think this isn't your average dream.
Maka Albarn : Why should I? After all I mean it's just another world or perhaps that went another Sega Universe, Sega this, Sega that. What's the worst that could happen from Yuji Naka's ideals? It's not like that the man who made the blue bur isn't going to--*THWACK!*
Inky Jr : Is there problem, Albarn? Did something fell on your head.
Maka Albarn : Yep. I felt that too. *DBZ SFX : Collapse*
Inky Jr : ...? *THWACK!* ...Ouch! *DBZ SFX : Collapse*
Maka Albarn : Owie zowie...Oh my head hurts. I can't even hear a single thing about one thing's sure.
Will : [To Helen] Uhh, are you sure this is a good idea?
Helen : [To Will] I don't know, this could not be an idea. If it's the same girl that the previous visitors know about that, Sega's gonna fire us if we ever see a girl and a demon appearing like this. We don't blow our cover.
Will : [To Helen] Come on, it's just a one look. What else, I'm not willing to take full responsibility after that, no one besides that even the dark times flows by.
Helen : [To Will] Just to assure you, I don't like surprises. So help me, if I don't see you at the end of my violin performance by the end of week, you're gonna be toast for sure.
Will : [To Helen] Don't be an idiot.
Nights : [To Helen & Will] Oh stop it, you two. Let's just wake these two up, just to make sure I won't tell Sonic about this. Mr. Ohshima would find out that we have a Square Enix representative that acclaims to be one of theirs.
Will & Helen : We get it, Nights! We know she's from Square Enix!
Nights : Promise me that you'll earn your allowence by the end of the week. Hey, can you hear me? Wake up, you two! This is no time no for napping in the dream world!
Maka Albarn : [wakes up] Huh? What's going on? Who's voice is this?
Nights : Up here.
Maka Albarn : ...Huh? (looks up to see Nights in a new uniform)
Nights : Looks like you're up, I saw you coming by to the dream gate. Long time no see, Meister.
Maka Albarn : ...!? (gets up) It's you! You again! Nights the Nightmaren.
Nights : I heard that your world called Soul Eater was nothing more than a fantasy in your head. I had to pull you out of there, where everyone and your friends can meet up at the gate.
Maka Albarn : Yeah, that was the last time that I pulled myself back into Dreamland, but why do I gotta be the victim to those heartless that were in my head or in my dreams?! But rest to assure, that they will never do it and definitely not today! So how did the heartless manage to see me in my memories or in my dreams?
Nights : Well, according to my daily basis. (blows a smoking pipe that blows bubbles instead) I discovered that those group of Soul World that you were living in your head, are the prototypes of Dream Eaters that this Master Xehanort fella was working on. You have a Dream Drop Distance, do ya?
Maka Albarn : A what distance?
[Dearly Beloved (DDD ver.) - Yoko Shimomura]
Maka Albarn : That fountain...it's filled with a rainbow?
Nights : Sure thing! I manage to help the players to give them a test on collecting the Dream Drops, you know those water drop collectables that were scattered around each of their dreams and I helped the programmers to find each and every single one of them, which took them hours to get a 100% completion award. Yeah, I kinda felt that way.
Maka Albarn : Actually it took these kids hours to find those Dream Drops, house of searching every single one of them! How many Dream Drops does it take to collect them?
Nights : According to my caculations, it appears that he number of Dream Drops that are within a distance that are located everywhere is about 60 total of them. You need 60 Dream Drops to make this fountain complete.
Maka Albarn : That makes sense. If I put my hand into this fountain, I wonder what's it like to be in the special occasion that I have this feeling that a Dream Drop Distance would eventually be a foreshadow for Sora's next game by the year 2012, Dream Eaters are not destined to meet within in the world of Kingdom Hearts.
Claris Sinclair (?) : Is there something the matter with the fountain?
Maka Albarn : [spooked] Aaah! *SPLASH!*
*Bubbling*
Nights : Claris? When did you get here?
*SPLASH*
Maka Albarn (as Claris Sinclair) : Sorry about that? I got a little nervous when I was about put my hand into the fountain to figure it out what that stuff is? If putting all 60 dream drops into the fountain to turn the water into a rainbow liquid, it becomes nothing clearer than I imagined. You're surely mistaken about that, Dream Jester.
Nights : Uhh, Mrs Albarn. I think you had a change of clothes or I can see one of my previous visitors that I've seen before.
Maka Albarn (as Claris Sinclair) : Huh? (looks down on herself, realizes that she changed her appearance as Clair Sinclair] Oh no! W...What the-!?
*SFX : Hero/Dark Mission Failed*
Maka Albarn (as Claris Sinclair) : AAh! Wha-!? Wha-!? Hey, what gives!? The fountain! Oh no it must've changed appearance of the previous visitors, It feels like we have the body to change one's appearance from the past. I'm Claris, You're another Clairs, and, uhh...
Elliot (?) : And I'm Elliot Edwards.
Clairs Sinclair (?) : We're just here for a special reason to drop by and I say that you have a dream drop experience, So what's this being a Dream Drop Distance. Is it some kind of logic system or is it to turn this fountain into a pool of rainbow liquid, there's no way that there could be a dream drop distance from between the two of you, Kirby's a god slaughter and you two are a joke god slayers, the only one's are who are gods are just muscles and magic. There's one reason that Kirby has killed many gods before you and you are a joke to it.
Maka Albarn : Haha, very funny guys. I know it's you. You're those kids from the Saturn Era and I would highly respect that you would...(Elliot and Claris points their keyblades at her)
[Bad News - Naofumi Hataya]
Claris Sinclair (?) : I said, Kirby is a God Slayer and he has killed many gods before you and Nights are a joke to it!
Elliot Edwards : We wouldn't mind recommend Sega dweebs like to tell you that Kirby made God slayers is what valor's all about. So about being a hero filled with courage is nothing more than a useless gift.
Maka Albarn : What's going on?
Nights : Claris, Elliot : What's going on? Don't you remember the jester who fought alongside you in 96?
Helen : Uhh, Nights? There's one teensy-weensy problem for that matter.
Maka : Like what?
Will : Earth to Meister, we got something for your thinking caps to turn on. I would highly recommend you one thing on those wielding weapons at us.
Nights : You're not Claris or Elliot, who are you guys?
Claris Sinclair (?) : Just friends of Sora, that's all. Now then how about we give you demonstration to our teamwork!
Elliot Edwards (?) : With that heart of yours to change from all of that courage, I'll give you all the valors we wanted.
Maka Albarn : No way! I'm doing a thing and that is what I really am? Cause I'll make you go out of the park and then see what happens.
Elliot Edwards (?) : Prepare yourself! It'll be a showdown to get the grips off. I won't back down from a challenge to you.

Re:Born (2016) Plot and characters are paper thin but if you want to see Tak “Versus” Sakaguchi kill a guy with chopsticks or wreck a bunch of people The Raid / The Night Comes For Us-style...well, this is pretty much your only choice. Fun thing, with the set up of a legendary ex-black ops soldier versus his old team, this is basically another Metal Gear Solid in all but name movie. (The others being Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the John Hyams Universal Soldier sequels.) They even got Solid Snake / Big Boss’s voice actor, Akio Otsuka, to play the bad guy. Director and stunt team did a bunch of mo-cap for various video game franchises, including Metal Gear, so may have been intentional. Seems to be only available for us Yankees on streaming services like Shudder and Amazon Prime, unless you really want to shell out some dough for a Japanese import DVD.

Review: Crazy Samurai Musashi -- Fantasia Festival 2020
Review: Crazy Samurai Musashi — Fantasia Festival 2020
Crazy Samurai Musashi takes about five minutes to establish its exceedingly simple premise: the Yoshioka clan must dispatch their entire army if they hope to vanquish the man they set out to kill, Miyamoto Musashi (Tak Sakaguchi). Then, the film commits to a 77-minute single take action sequence, in which Musashi does away with hundreds of swordsmen.

You can see plenty of seams in the staging…

Pat Metheny-esque Videogame Music
One of my favorite things to do is find super-specific trends in videogame music -- so specific that they’re not even trends, really. Just, like, similar approaches spanning a few composers who might have nothing to do with one another but have a shared frame of reference. One of these mini-pseudo-trends is a few Japanese composers showing, during the early 90s, that they not only liked Pat Metheny but could compositionally and instrumentally emulate his music.
Going by chronology, we first have an untitled piece by Motoi Sakuraba for Seireishin Seiki Fhey Area, a Japan-only 1992 Sega CD release. The video embedded links to a playthrough, as there is no upload of the soundtrack on YouTube. If I were hearing the track on its own, I’d’ve figured it was the theme for a port town, but it’s used for various residential interiors. This is the only track included in my list that’s an in-game piece and not an arrangement.
Next, in 1993, there is Yoko Kanno’s (uncredited) score for New Horizons, or Uncharted Waters 2: New Horizons. Specifically, I’m referring to an arranged album where the track, “The Chase”, is given the full Metheny treatment. You can listen to the original in-game track here. Qualitative assessment of the soundfont aside, nothing about it would strike anyone as Metheny-esque. I wonder if Kanno had the arranged version’s ensemble in mind but simply didn’t have the time or hardware knowledge to get it there, even in a limited state.
Finally (I told you this was short!) is an arrangement by Yuji Toriyama of Chun-Li’s Street Fighter 2 theme, originally composed by Yoko Shimomura. This is off of a 1994 album, STREET FIGHTER II ALPH-LYLA with YUJI TORIYAMA. Most of the other arrangements are rock-oriented and could be stylistic references too, but I don’t know enough about rock music -- at least not the kind that these tracks are -- to make hard connections. You can listen to them all here.
That’s all I’m aware of. As I continue my explorations of videogame music, I’ll also continue to be on the lookout for more additions to this list.
