WHY ARE PEOPLE LEAVING FANDOM'S? WHAT I HAVE FOUND OUT.

So, I have noticed that a lot of my mutual's for many fandom's ( TUA, TWD, Z-NATION, WWDITS, Derry Girls, HOTD, etc. ) have been dropping like flies.

[ I love you my beautiful friends, and I hope one day you will feel comfortable and safe to come back 😘 ]

It got me thinking, why? Why? WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?! But, after talking to a few of my mutual's on other apps, it came down to mainly three common things with these mutual's. ( note, this is not for every fandom / fan, this was just the mutual's that I talked to, okay? )

1. The TV show ended, so there isn't much reason to stick around anymore. ( Umbrella Academy, The Walking Dead, Derry Girls, Z-Nation, What We Do in the Shadows, etc. )

Which is valid. If there are no more ( Ex. Sunday episodes for HOTD or Sunday episodes for TWD ) not many fans wanna stick around.

Then, after so many fans leave. It kind of becomes a 'dead fandom'. Where people sometimes goes back to time to time and be like, "Oh, I remember that show.." for nostalgia.

2. Their interests have changed.

Like any common trend, some people just say, "Nah, I don't like *insert show* anymore. I liked the 5th season and 2nd. But, I'm just not that into *insert genre* tv shows anymore." Again, valid.

Everyone had gone through one kind of phase before. It could have been books ( PJO, HP, etc. ) or fashion ( Skinny jeans, graphic t-shirts, etc. ) or music ( MCR, Blood on the Dance Floor, etc. )

It's fine to grow and change.

3. The fandom doesn't feel like a fandom anymore. This is a BIG one that many have told me.

People are clashing together, book vs tv show fights, character x character ships are constantly hating on each other, death threats are being sent to actors / fans / fanfic writers, you can't share your opinion without someone sending hate, etc.

The best example is HOTD. A fandom that I am in / write for.

Now, now, here me out! I have been very open about the hate in the fandom. You can check. I've gotten hate for writing about highly requested character's ( Aegon, Aemond, etc. ) and I have called out how fans are acting towards each other / actors.

What I don't get is this. We are all in the same fandom.

How did we go from, "Oh, Tom Glynn-Carney is really cute in Aegon's wig. It suits him.", "I have a fan theory that maybe in the next episode they'll do this part from the book because the teaser at the end of the episode it shows..", and, "I hope they put this scene in the show!"

To "Oh, you think Tom Glynn-Carney is cute as Aegon? Well you support r@pe and deserve death threats!", "Oh, you wrote a fanfic / oneshot / etc. for this character? Oh, it has a trope that it being used by a lot of other writers? Here's hate for that!", and, "Tom Glynn-Carney says that Aegon is a complex character...so clearly he supports..."

The main point is that this is why soooooo many of people are dropping out of fandom's. And when people call it out, they either get run out of the fandom as well or blasted for it with death threats.

Fandom's used to be places where people could go to geek out with others. A safe place. It's why there is comic con, etc. People want to know other fans, the want a safe place to go to.

Now, it's become a place where you have to mostly keep your head down low and not say a thing to avoid being run out because you share a different opinion.

In conclusion? I hope that fandom's can be kind to each once again so that people feel safe / comfortable to come back.

To all my beautiful fans who were run out / felt like they had to leave a fandom, I love you and understand why you left. I hope one day you will come back and find joy in the fandom that you once did.

To those of you running out fans / sending death threats. It's you that ruins the fandom. Fandom's were safe places for people, now you've ruined it for those people.

If you don't like a fandom / other fan, you have other options :

1. IGNORE THEM AND LEAVE THEM ALONE!

2. BLOCK A TAG / ACCOUNT YOU DON'T LIKE!

3. DON'T SEND DEATH THREATS!

4. FIND A PART OF THE FANDOM THAT MATCHES YOU AND STICK TO IT!

5. Block their account / tag, ignore them, not send death threats, leave them alone and enjoy the parts of the fandom that matches you.

It's that simple!

ooh ok i'll give a big list:

channel zero (it's first season is the best), a haunting of hill house, american horror story (imo only up to season 3 are good), yellowjackets, lovecraft county, midnight mass, them (this is brutual tred lightly), interview with the vampire (THIS ONE), brand new cherry flavor, chucky, the terror, cabinet of curiosities, archive 81, evil, hannibal, the fall of the house of usher, katla, cracow monster, marianne, twilight zone (OG BABY), slasher (imo season 1), penny dreadful (it gets bad but season 1 is good), from, mindhunter (more thriller but idc im saying horror), the outsider, the haunting of bly manor, castle rock, hemlock grove (that was my like 2014 phase show; i had all the seasons on dvd), what we do in the shadows, masters of horror, twin peaks, creepshow, ash vs evil dead, the exorcist (i only watched season 1), z nation (was my personality once upon a time), hammer house of horror, salem, scream (it was good ok it could had been even better but they got rid of all the original cast by like i think season 4), van helsing, pretty little liars: original sin, dead boy detectives (it's more teen dramaish kinda but i love it), bates motel, the sandman (does this count as horror??), sweet home, true blood (i think it starts to fall off tho in later seasons), all of us are dead, the strain, and servant.

Z nation trivia

• Several of the actors/crew lived together while filming the first season in Spokane, Washington, to save on costs. This included Anastasia Baranova (Addy) and Michael Welch (Mack).

• The first season was recorded on a tight schedule, with an episode being fully recorded within six days, with most shoots only allowing three takes.

• Keith Allan (Murphy) was working for The Asylum production company as a stage hand when they were tasked with Z Nation (2014). They suggested he audition for the role of Murphy and he ended up getting the part

• In one of the episodes, survivors are seen eating "Twinkies" - a nod to Zombieland (2009).

• As the character of Murphy continued to evolve, it was decided that the blue skin aspect of the character would be removed. Anastasia's contract is non-restricted, leaving her open to pursue other projects. The character of Addy has therefore been temporarily written out of the show until Anastasia could commit to working on it again.

• Four different actresses have played Lucy in the series as of the end of season 3

• In the episode "Welcome to Murphytown," The Man escaped hand cuffs by cutting off his own hand. This is a reference to the movie Deadpool (2016) where he does the same thing. It also occurred in The Walking Dead when the character Merle was handcuffed on the roof. He cut his hand off to get free.

A question for you because you seem like one of those people who has watched everything: how did you get started watching bl, and what are your ultimate favorite shows?

Double-barrelled! I'm honoured.

How did I get into BL?

The short answer is that ~2016 the YouTube algorithm served me up Lovesick and I immediately went EXCUSE ME WHAT IS THIS and looked up everything else available and watched literally everything I could get my hands on (which at the time was easy because there was only a handful compared to today, but it still felt like a wealth of content to enjoy).

The longer answer is that I used to be really involved in GL (I was the secretary at the first Yuricon in North America in 2002 or 2003) and then BL manga fandom (was in a scanlation group for awhile) through ~2006? so its extra hilarious that this wasn't my route in; I apparently took a break right before they started making live action versions in Japan. But when I got into Thai BL it was fun rediscovering these tropes in a new medium and through the lens of a new-to-me culture, noticing how they differed and how the genre had matured (and how it hadn't), and on catching up on the stuff out of Japan, seeing some of the manga I read over a decade ago come to life! So I mention this history because it's definitely a part of why I stayed (and probably why the algorithm found me relatively quickly).

I only started tracking things in a spreadsheet in 2020 (and it's not nearly as comprehensive or useful as @absolutebl 's), but I did try to backfill the highlights of what I've seen and I have over 550 rows on there, fwiw. I'm a completionist so I do try to watch everything, though that's getting more and more impossible these days.

KALLEN KOUZUKI (CODE GEASS) (CW Mind Control Mention)

1.) Kallen is constantly subjected to objectification. Most of the times she pilots her mech (giant robot), she's in this gratuitous shot of where she's bent over and it shows her ass or her boobs, and none of the men are subjected to this position or shot when they pilot. When she finds out that Zero (the leader of the resistance who she loves, respects, and follows) and Lelouch (a Britannian (the people occupying her country) who's her classmate and who she doesn't particularly like) are the same person and also that he has one-time-use-per-person mind control powers, instead of being conflicted about both her feelings and Lelouch being Zero in the first place and, y'know, THE MIND CONTROL, the next time we see her after she learns this (granted, after a time skip of a few months) she's just still in love with him and has no reservations about following him or, y'know, HIS MIND CONTROL POWERS. If she had any reservations or trust issues or mixed feelings, she dealt with them off screen during the time skip between season 1 and season 2. Because she has to be part of the show's harem nonsense, you see, god forbid her screen time and feelings about Zero/Lelouch once she knows he's Zero be mainly about HER or EVER stray from positive and romantic. And her character's focus/screen time at this point shifts from being about Japan (her home country) to being so much (albeit not entirely) about Lelouch and her feelings for him, and she's still a great character and one of the best pilots on the show but COME ON. And then so much of the official and gacha game art has her with this blushing waifu face that isn't reflective of the core of her character at all, and it's just like. why. why would you do this to her when it just makes your story worse. Like, Kallen's treatment takes the show's ranking down from A to A- all by itself.

2.) Wants liberty for her nation is a talented mecha pilot yet the ungodly sexualisation doesn’t do her justice at all. Also gets swept under Main Character’a Harem

3.) Do you know how hard it is to find a non sexual image of her??

CHI-CHI (DRAGON BALL)

1.) okay so to start at the beginning, she was introduced as a young kid but they put her in a super revealing bikini styled outfit. pretty sure it was supposed to be armor too, so besides just being a disgusting design choice even in-universe it's impractical. but besides that she was pretty charming as a kid, she was cute and funny and pretty tough, and had a cool gimmick in her blade/ laser helmet. even when she reappeared in late Dragon Ball, she was a bit abrasive but was overall rational and kind. she was strong enough to make it into the World Martial Arts Tournament, one of only 16 to qualify.

but come Dragon Ball Z and on, she's reduced to just a shrill, nagging, aggressive wife and mother. all she gets to do is cook, worry, and berate her husband and sons. her physical strength is only used so she can comically hit Goku. sure its played for laughs, but he's shown to be afraid of her. I only recall her leaving her house once or twice in DBZ. just the worst mother character stereotype, with nothing left to make her likeable. she's portrayed as irrational but despite her aggressiveness, half the time her wants are completely reasonable. can't blame a woman for not wanting her husband to die every other day!! her writing us ass but I still love her and she deserves better!!!

2.) So in Dragon Ball she wasn't the BEST character to start out with. Toriyama hasn't ever been the best at writing women or not making stupid fucking sex jokes about them. So she had to deal with that. The outfit she wore as a kid was… NOT GREAT. Let's say that! Then in late Dragon Ball her entire character revolves around Goku and trying to marry him, which she gets by tricking Goku and getting beaten by Goku in a tournament in one hit. Not off to a great start. Then Z started and Toriyama just… gave her an ENTIRELY NEW new personality, and that new personality was just a stereotype of a tiger mom. Regardless of how correct she might've been about letting Gohan fight (and she WAS completely correct, he was 5-6 for a HUGE chunk of Z) the narrative frames her as a hysterical and unreasonable woman nagging at the menfolk and not letting them do things. So naturally people hate her without even considering why she's upset because the story itself frames her as in-the-wrong. The whole franchise also just forgets that she's a martial artist and never has her DO ANYTHING.

This is only scratching the surface, there's a LOT more because the franchise is like 40 years old and we'd be here all day.

3.) Which of our four main reporters from The Girls on the Bus would give Supergirl the hardest time during an interview?

my instinct says Grace. i don't think she would be the biggest fan of Supergirl because of the walls put up between Supergirl and the rest of the world. all anyone knows about supergirl is that 1. she's kryptonian, 2. she saves people, 3. she's superman cousin. she reveals hardly anything about herself to the public- especially in the earlier seasons (the first few episodes of s1, she hardly wanted to be photographed at all)

i think grace would see supergirl as someone who millennials and gen z idolize and put on a pedestal, for no other reason than she's kryptonian and has powers. i think she would be the most skeptical, and the most hard on her in her interviews, and in her writing. she would want more information and feel as though she, and the public, deserves it. when supergirl doesn't give it, grace would grill her even harder.

after grace, i think it would be kimberlyn. i think there might be SOME underlying xenophobia towards supergirl and aliens in general. not a ton, and I think given her development, it wouldn't last forever. but I think she would be untrusting of supergirl (at least in the beginning) and she wouldn't be afraid to tear into that on the air.

Lola, i think would be on the same level as kimberlyn in terms of how hard she is on supergirl, but for different reasons. i want to believe that she would love supergirl, but I don't think it fits with her character. i think she'd take issue with the name 'superGIRL' given her thoughts on gender roles. she would feel like supergirl as a brand perpetuates girl-boss white feminism, which I don't think is fully a bad take tbh. BUT i think she'd have a hard time separating supergirl from the brand she has been made into (by catco, the rest of the media, and consumerism in general) from supergirl as an individual. because kara and her values/traumas/intentions when she is supergirl, is not at all the same as the supergirl caricature National City makes her into.

finally, Sadie would love supergirl. she'd be the cheesy millennial putting supergirl on a pedestal who grace despises lmao. sadie probably wouldn't even be allowed to write anything about her, because of how biased it comes across

The summer season will come to a close in a few short weeks with the Summer Cup. Needless to say, we had a busy summer. Acclive Academy Forensics students attended 3 Olympiad tournaments, and 2 intramurals.

Impressively, we brought home 2 national championships, 10+ speaker awards, and nearly 20+ bid earnings throughout the season! Words cannot express how proud we are of these hardworking individuals.

Truly, time flies. As fall draws near, we're standing proud of our remarkable accomplishments and eagerly embracing what lies ahead.

yourusername welcome to my postgame penalty box update: my boyfriend tried his best edition! now, you might be thinking— “y/n, last update z was at three games since his last penalty! what happened to four?” well, my lovelies, trevor rudely DIED in monday’s game against the aves, and i was a mourning widow, so i did not post that game. he remained dead on thursday’s game against the kraken, but he finally revived for tonight’s game against the oilers!

i, and i’m sure the rest of the world, would like to forget that this game exists. but alas, we cannot, and must persevere onwards to the rest of the season! during z baby’s 19:08 minutes of ice time (second most for forwards; stromer was first with 19:48!) he did not get a penalty! he had some pretty close calls shots wise, but the oilers’ goalie was a doo doo head. z did get hit again pretty hard and had to go to the locker room, but the wind was just knocked out of him and he returned shortly after!

special notes: the broadcasters on the oilers broadcast talked about z! the conversation went as such:

“zegras leads in anaheim in goals and points this season.”

“yep. top player, he’s obviously going to be under a lot of attention. he’s a wizard with the puck on his stick, i’ll tell ya.”
