Waving her arm to the suit bag she'd draped over one of his as she'd come through his door with her bestie. "You should go put that one while I turn on some holiday music, and then we'll go and get something to eat. You can't say no to free food, Zach,think how insulted Rosie and Charlie would be. It's a big night and people are whispering there's some big announcement from The Wexley's, aren't you even just a little curious?" Throwing everything she could at the wall, hoping something would stick, Courtney adjusted the ball on her Santa hat and gave a little straightening of her strapless Christmas dress. "I'm not taking no for an answer, so now shoo and go change. I already talked to Eric, he and Ria's hubby are going to meet us there."

"There you are...." She'd been looking for him for what felt like hours, even her heels hadn't stayed on for the entire time, the designer pair handing from two fingers as she crept around the corner into the gym. Realizing after a moment that he didn't hear her, Ember sighed and straitened up, making her way over and giving him a wave in the mirrors so she didn't startle him by coming up behind him. He didn't really seem like the kinda guy who appreciated being surprised like that. Reaching up for his headphones when she was sure he'd spotted her, she plucked one from his ear as she stepped around in front of him. "You okay? I've been worried about you."

// B1, gym. Nov 19, early afternoon.

For the first time in a long time, he couldn't stand the silence; it was the lack of music coming from the neighboring studio, no sounds coming from that direction whatsoever. He wanted to hear something fall to the floor, a knock on his door, Ria's muffled laughter, the sound of a violin. Nothing. Zach grabbed his Walkman, picked a few cassettes he felt like listening to, and headed to the gym; his back was much better already, and staying in shape sounded crucial to survival. Or maybe he meant his mental state.

He picked weights, pressed Play on his Walkman, and, with the first press, tried turning his thoughts off completely. There would be time for them later.

With that in mind, he waited patiently on the other side of his bed for you to notice him. But when the minutes went by and you weren't paying him any attention, he though he had enough.

The moment his hand closed around her arm, Ember froze, entirely unsure of what was about to happen, because it felt like she'd just blown up his life with her impulsiveness. Instead of his ire, though, she found herself once more in his embrace, melting into him with appreciative relief that shifted quickly back into guilt with his words.

Detatching herself from him as his lips pressed to her cheek, she did her best to force a smile. "Okay. I know... okay? I just... I very obviously need some more time... considering what..." had just happened. Shame and embarrassment curdling her insides, and making her want to be swallowed up by the floor once more, she did her best to appease him.

"Tell Emily I'm really sorry okay. It wasn't like that. I know you know that... but I just-... I gotta go, okay? I swear, it's fine, it is, I just-... I gotta go." Backing away slowly as she spoke, the moment she knew she was out of arms reach Ember did, indeed, flee.

Even though it was Ember kissing Zach, her reaction proved they were equally surprised by that response. He couldn't blame her, not after he had tried that first a few months earlier - his first and last attempt at trying to be with her and his worst one at comforting her - so even though the kiss wasn't reciprocated, he didn't really push Ember away either. Maybe a part of him feared that would be the last straw.

On the contrary, her sudden realization and the apology that followed were far more expected. As if Zach had read the script and knew exactly what to do, he stopped Ember from running away just like that, from leaving him with one problem more than he found her.

"That's okay," he said in his calmest voice possible, then pulled her into a hug again and pressed a small kiss to her cheek to prove he understood. She could run away, and she sure would, but Zach wanted her to know she could come back without shame. "Please... Don't do this to yourself, Ember; you're still loved, and drinking those problems away won't help."

"Exactly. Yourself and Ash heading up the scouts, keeping all the information gathered about what's out there gathered together. Keeping things organized with dedicated leadership will be essential going forward if we're planning for the long term." Nodding his head with a proud little smile, Tobias offered a small pat to the younger man's father. "I had little doubt you would be, Zach. In absence of your parents, I will say that I'm really proud of how you've stepped up in all of this. You're a good man."

Clearing the hint of sickness that his growing emotion had started to implant into his voice, he once more returned to the matter at hand. "Charlie has agreed to take charge of inventory working with Rosie who will remain as head of rations. Mal is of course maintenance and engineering. Most of these roles are intuitive, but I think making them more official to the rest of the residents will bring some peace of mind to them. Having strong leadership makes people feel more secure."

He gave Tobias a small smile, but as soon as he knew what they would be discussing, all his attention was focused on that matter. Having placed his cup on the desk in front of him, Zach sat down and leaned back, letting the man explain what he had already talked about to Ashton. The fact that he wasn't the first Tobias discussed this with was quite relieving because it meant that whatever task he would be given, he and Ash would be on the same team again and they had already learned how working together on something similar was like.

Zach listened in silence, sipping on his coffee before finally putting it back on the desk and he cleared his throat. "So... Whoever volunteered for this run, and in the future, we'll be responsible for all the planning and preparations," he attempted to sum it up, presenting a perfect example of mixed feelings with the look on his face. It was easier when his decisions were just his and he wasn't responsible for others, not directly, at least, and now Mr. Wexley came to him and asked him to be a part of something Zach might not be cut out for. Ash was a Marine, such tasks were his second nature. Or that's how Zach saw it. A thousand thoughts flooded his head and he cherry-picked those that made accepting the offer he couldn't refuse more... plausible. "Now that you put it like this... We'll continue to serve our community the best we can, except now it will be more... official."

Another sip of his coffee bought him some time to think about this new old role some more before he spoke again. "I don't wanna sound ungrateful," a word he had used so many times before, usually referring to things he had worked hard for and fully deserved, but had difficulty admitting himself, "I appreciate it very much, Sir."

Zach and Ashton had surprised him with their insistence on stepping up to the plate despite their obvious distain for any attention it brought them, but he was grateful. Between them, his own son, Rosie and a few of the others, it seemed their little community had a solid leadership base and that in and of itself was reassuring in a way. It only solidified the idea of a team or committee to help him run the building. People needed people to look up to, to guide them, and even the most powerful CEOs still had a board.

"That's what's so commendable and rather selfless, in my opinion. Yourself and Ashton have made a wonderful discovery here, and to your own personal risk. Don't sell yourself short, Zach." Offering a gentle pat to the younger man's shoulder, his laughter was easy and warm as he nodded his head in agreement to Zach's last statement. "She really speaks very highly of you, actually. Also... I suppose this explains why her bathroom is now accented in blue splotches." And at least one full blue handprint. "I know she can be a whirlwind, but it's nice to see that she hasn't lost her effervescence in all this. From the sounds of it, her friendship with you has a lot to do with that."

Zach nodded in agreement. Cautious optimism sounded wise. Nobody could predict how people would react to the tests and their results, and while some might notice how important this discovery was, others would find a way to turn it into another problem they didn't need. Division. Even more doubt and fear. He was glad it wasn't just him and his trust issues again when Tobias expressed the same fear. "We should focus on that," he said with another, confident nod. "Good organization, keeping a finger on the pulse, and not stopping here." There had to be more things to be discovered out there, or maybe something in the documents they had brought. Especially now that they had the new CDC guy on board. Cautious optimism.

At the mention of his parents, Zach turned to Mr. Wexley again, the look on his face telling exactly how surprising it was for him to hear that. He took a deep breath and cleared his throat, a little sentimental trip making him reflect on not just the situation in general, but himself, too. He didn't feel safe standing in a corner now, hoping others would do something, especially since he felt competent enough to take action. Having been voted to go to the crash site and then Ashton's full support for his crazy idea helped him believe that. "I'm just doing what I think is the right thing to do, Sir. It would've been nothing, but a suicidal mission without Ashton Ryder's support, and I doubt my parents would be proud of a hothead. But thank you." Zach smiled, keeping his response more lighthearted than it sounded in his head, and couldn't help but chuckle when Tobias mentioned his daughter and Doom. And how they needed a damn apocalypse to start talking. "Ember, yes. Oh, it's the dog, Sir," he replied, shaking his head a little. "I can't blame her."

That was just about the sweetest thing Ember had ever heard, and she couldn't help the teeny tiny 'Aw' she let out under her breath when he said it. It was so sad and tragic what had happened with his friend, and it broke her heart how much it must hurt him.

Doing her best to keep the subject topic off the obviously morose, she grinned bright as the sun and nodded her head with exaggerated confidence. "Of course, and then I can go up to him like na na na told you so. Trust me, that's always such a cathartic experience."

It was one of those things Ash would definitely understand, too, even if his opinion on Ember leaving the safety of the building would differ from Zach's. They couldn't sit still and staying inside sounded like a punishment to both men. "It's okay. I think about her all the time anyway," he replied quietly, surprised by his sudden openness. He licked his lips and looked away for a second to regain his composure, so when he turned to Ember again, he was smiling again. "I know. And I'm sure you'll show him how badass you are."

A little hesitant at first and unsure if it was a good idea, he finally arched a brow, asking, "Wanna walk Doom with me tomorrow morning? He's not a snitch."
