finished sea of stars. spoilers ahead.

overall i really liked it! but honestly? thought it was kinda mid until the clockwork castle. It got really good when you entered the sea of stars, but I've always loved sci-fi more than fantasy (and sci-fi fantasy mixes more than either of the two), so that's not surprising. didn't much care for the golden ending either. I think it's because i didn't love garl? which is surprising, usually I like good good boys.

tbh i think that's because they really mythologized garl. like, he's a 100% great dude, would love to be friends with him in real life, sounds like a wonderful guy. but as a character? he has some trauma but he's well adjusted? he's not snarky or bitchy? he's not even dumb?? but all my favourite good good boys fall under at least one of those categories!

anyway i loved resh'an, serai, and erlina. not surprising. especially resh'an's immortal all-powerful being love affair with a dude destroying entire worlds. i was a doctor who fan.

edit: one other thing to add. Sea of Stars is gorgeous. it's amazingly beautiful. play it for the art alone. hell, play it for the attention to detail in the art - the way it shifts when you move worlds is so great.

2. when in canon does your self insert come in? do you have a scene in mind for your entrance?

Hpmi canon hasn't really advanced since I made my s/i since it's in-between arcs right now, so Story would enter at the start of the next arc!

I've talked generally about the scene we first meet, but to be more specific our first meeting isn't really the first time we talk. Story accidentally speaks really vaguely upon their meeting because she thinks she's talking to his brother (who he's been impersonating). She takes his initial confusion the wrong way and cuts the conversation off, leaving Gen to have to go back and track her down to figure out what this random girl really knows about his brother and the manuscript. So really, everything starts with a little misunderstanding

5. does your self insert have any special powers or abilities?

Her mic/speaker ability during battles is a defensive one! It manifests as her dragon speakers wrapping their wings around her/her team for a turn which muffles some of the sound from the opponents' speakers. (I'll post some doodles of my mic/speakers sometime!)

15. how does your self insert play a role in the plot of the story? do they help directly defeat the villain, support the heroes, etc.?

Since her backstory starts in pre-canon and her job is a researcher, I think she's a plot device for establishing lore and unraveling certain mysteries that have been set up! But also Gentaro's manuscript was shown to be a really powerful weapon of information, so things she helps piece together may help move the story along, too.

It was surprisingly easy to find Dr. Zale’s address. People really aren’t careful with what they put online these days. He drove by the house a few hours before nightfall just to see what it looked like. 

It definitely wasn’t what he thought an award-winning doctor in marine biology would have as a home. It was small, and old, and clearly falling apart for longer than the four years she’d been gone. The neighborhood wasn’t exactly friendly either, Art swore he saw a drug deal happening down the street, in broad daylight, not even a block from Dr. Zale’s dark, empty house. 

Suddenly Art was a little less worried about the cops catching him sneaking in. But to be safe he’d still wait till nightfall. He did promise he’d be careful after all.

Accident (lucky you, you get THREE)

Tatum came back a moment later, looking extremely guilty. 

“I-I’m sorry Art, that--that was a mistake, it was an accident--”

“Mistake?” Art interrupted, feeling anger flare in his chest. “Accident? You started it! You just said you wanted to!”

The words felt childish as soon as they left his mouth, but it was true. 

“I know, I know, I just, I shouldn’t have--I’m such an idiot,” he said running his hands through his hair. 

“Is it… is it because I’m trans?” Art said, his voice starting to waver. Tatum snapped up, his face wearing that same expression of horror. 

“No! No, oh Art, no, I don’t care about that--”

“It-It makes sense, I-I don’t pass very well since I’m n-not on T yet--”

“Art, no, no no no, that’s not why, oh Art--” Tatum cut off as he suddenly gripped Art in a hug, making Art gasp a little before hugging him back. “That’s not why, I don’t care if you pass or not, you’re perfect either way.”

Art sighed and dropped his hands. 

“Tatum, you’re giving me very mixed signals right now. First you’re kissing me, then you’re saying it was a mistake, or accident, or something, and now you’re hugging me and telling me I’m perfect--”

“Fuck, I know, I know, I’m sorry,” Tatum said, releasing Art. “It’s not about that, I promise.”

Grandmother: None, and nothing at all resembling it lol

Indicating: Also nothing lol

Shopping:

“Water? The ocean is right there,” Tatum said, pointing it out in case Art missed it. Art rolled his eyes at him and Tatum tried not to get too annoyed about that. 

“You can’t drink ocean water, Tatum. Or at least I can’t. It has salt in it, that will only make me more thirsty and dehydrated,” Art said. He glanced down at his water bottle, already almost empty. “Fuck. What am I gonna do? I-I can’t go anywhere. There’s a tourist shopping area not too far that will have food and water, but what happens when we run out of money? Even if I take my old job it won’t be enough for all of us to eat and pay for transportation--and that’s even if I can get my job back, I don’t have access to my resume or anything now--and I forgot my fucking phone charger--hell I probably shouldn’t even go back there anyway, that’s the first place they’ll look for me and no fucking way I’m leaving you guys and going back into foster care, I’m not fucking doing it--”

“Hey,” Tatum interrupted. Art looked up at him, and the desperate expression on his face made Tatum’s heart squeeze. “It’s okay, I’m gonna help you."

Administrative public law concerns the proper relations between government and governed; or, to put it another way, Zale and Bishop Beartongue have had it with this shit.

This is a treat for @naomitess, and I’m pretty sure a bunch of people guessed it was me just from the summary. Anyway it was a delight to do! and an interesting process in its way. I loved the idea of Bishop Beartongue inventing judicial review but it struck me right away that it couldn’t be American judicial review. It’s not fancy, like American judicial review is - none of this testing of lower court holdings and whatnot in high-profile whatevers. What she’s invented is ordinary administrative judicial review: the idea that any action taken by a public authority must be rational, legal and procedurally correct. Which is, I think, an interesting thought in the context of the White Rat. Because, you know, large-scale generation-defining constitutional law is fine. (It’s ok i guess. fine.) But my training and everyone’s training is one-man-and-a-dog JRs. I had probably done hundreds of them before I did the big stuff you’ve heard of. So none of this means that Bishop Beartongue and Zale can’t topple the Archon, it’s only that if they do, it begins with one person, some phallic mishaps and a horrendous stone gargoyle, and a whole bunch of other apparently inconsequential things. So that was great fun, and it turns out Beartongue is still my favourite. I wish someone would write me 50k of her just doing her thing.

The other story is my assigned story and the one that got wildly out of hand. It’s for a piece at McSweeney’s called We Are a Picturesque Small Town And We Refuse to Be The Setting For Your Romantic Comedy. That piece is delightful and hilarious! It’s 500w! And somehow I ended up writing a 9000-word romantic comedy that's essentially original f/f SF. If you like my pro work you will probably like it. At least I hope you do, I enjoyed writing it very much.

Thank you so very much Zale!!! Didn't realize how lengthy I was gonna talk about this here in the post and in the tags, but it was very nice to get out my system!! 😊

I'm actually so excited that you asked number 6 for M.cQueen, it hadn't even crossed my mind at first, and technically isn't zoo or aquarium, moreso museum, but I think that still qualifies- but! L.ightning actually loovesss dinosaurs! I don't know if you've ever heard of C.ars On The Road, it's like this little series that came out in 2023, each episode is about 5 minutes long(they say like 7 minutes but it's just 2+ minutes of credits, no extra credit scenes except for a 5 second one in one episode) and L.ightning and M.ater, to make a long story short, go on a roadtrip together and they go on stops along the way and the first stop they go to is like a dinosaur museum!

And L.ightning like full swing goes into hyperfixation mode and just babbles about dinosaurs and I love it. He says he did "hours of intensive research" and it just cuts to him watching documentaries in M.ack's trailer and it makes me giggle. M.ack is so sweet, I can only imagine how much second-hand dino knowledge he has cause of L.ightning or overhearing his documentaries! There's also been some jokes that what if the main reason L.ightning wanted to be D.inoco's team in the first movie is just cause he likes dinosaurs and I love it.

I explain a bit more in the tags but tumblr has a one video limit per post that I didn't know about?? So I'm just doing one of the clips here!

They're so silly I love it.

But basically to make a long story short! L.ightning has a massive hyperfixation on dinosaur stuff and would thrive in a dinosaur related musuem. Though, I'd imagine he'd be bored in an aquarium or zoo until he realized that he could make connections here, and he'd go around to all the bird-type species or sharks and talk about how they're related to dinosaurs or have dinosaur ancestors and such!

1) what does their alarm ringtone sound like

It took me some pondering at first who to answer this for and then an idea immediately hit me, and I'd figure I'd answer this for F.rancesco

Basically, to put it in a nutshell, F.1 is a bunch of international racers on international race courses, and whoever wins at the end of each race gets their national anthem played! And I'm giggling over the thought of F.rancesco setting his alarm that he wakes up to in the morning to ltaly's national anthem.

Ringtone wise though, he'd definitely set it to a specific song, or something someone would ask questions about so he could go on this entire spiel about how it relates to him or something he likes. I'd probably rub off on him at some point and he'd make his ringtone(or the ringtone specifically for when I call) S.mooth Operator by Sade.

5) how do they bookmark their book pages

I'll answer this one for F.inn, just cause I think he's the one that's mostly likely to read full books fairly frequently. He'd probably just have a simple bookmark. something small and fairly thin cause he likes taking care of his books and wouldn't want to bend any pages or mess up the spine of the book too badly, probably something like this:

Maybe not the particular design that's on it, but definitely just the rectangle with the little tassels on it. I wouldn't be surprised if he had a bookmark with the UK flag on it as a design, he's quite patriotic and I think it's adorable. Though due to my recent knitting escapades he'd 100% ask me to knit one like one of these:

Though this has also given me the brilliant enlightenment idea of F.inn having one of those book lights or book lamps that clamp onto the book and shines a light on it and you can kinda adjust it and l'1l be having brainrot over that for a bit. May or may not have cultivated a fic idea around it already.
